Soapstone is the term applied to an impure, massive, soft rock with a greasy feel. It is of variable composition, consisting chiefly, however, of talc, tremolite, and chlorite. Although limited quantities of soapstone are used as building material, in fireplaces, and in the manufacture of laundry tubs, sinks, laboratory-table tops, and-oven and furnace blocks, the principal part of the production is ground for use in roofing paper, insecticides, and as a filler in asphaltic paints.

Recovery and separation of molybdenum and rhenium from a process solution was accomplished by a technique developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines involving a combined solvent extraction and activated carbon adsorption procedure. The processing sequence required treatment of the solution with S02 to reduce the chlorate ion and adjust the pR prior to solvent extraction of molybdenum and rhenium with a tertiary amine. Molybdenum and rhenium were stripped from the organic phase with an NH40H solution, and the strip solution was then passed through activated carbon to preferentially adsorb the rhenium. After washing entrained molybdenum from the column with a brine solution, rhenium was eluted with an MeOH-H20 mixture. The activated carbon was regenerated with water. Molybdenum was recovered as (NH4)6Mo7024 by evaporating the column effluent. Rhenium in the column eluate was reextracted with a tertiary amine, stripped from the organic phase with dilute NH40H, and recovered as NH4Re04 by evaporating the strip solution. The final (NR4)Re04 product contained < 80 ppm impurities. Sodium sulfate was crystallized from the first solvent-extraction raffinate by lowering the solution temperature to 0° C. Precious metals contained in the original process solution were adsorbed onto the activated carbon.

This paper, describing the mining method at the Black Butte quicksilver mine, is one of a series of papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various districts of the United States. It is presented to show the mining practice and costs in the successful treatment of low-grade quicksilver deposits. The operation discussed is an excellent example of w1-pat can be done in working a limited tonnage of low-grade ore under sound management. The Black Butte mine is situated at Black Butte, Lane County, in the southern part of the State of Oregon, 17-1/2 miles from Cottage Grove -- a station on the Siskiyou branch of the Southern Pacific Co. The Black Butte mining district lies in the foothills of the Calapooia Mountain Range, which connects with the Cascade Range on the east and with the Coast Range on the west. The elevation at &apos;.lie reduction plant is 1,000 feet above sea level. The apex of Black Butte Mountain, or which the mine is situated, has an elevation of 2,700 feet. The district possesses exceptional natural facilities infrequently met with elsewhere for the mining and reduction of cinnabar ores. To determine the retorting characteristics of a column of mine-run, ungraded oil shale ranging in size from fines to pieces weighing as much as 5 tons, a 150-ton batch retort was designed and constructed at the Laramie Energy Research Center, Laramie, Wyo. The retort vessel is 45 feet high by 11-1/2 feel in inside diameter and is supported in a 92-Foot-high steel superstructure. Mine-run shale from the Bureau of Mines facility near Rifle, Colo., assaying about 25 gallons of oil per ton, is currently being used as the test shale. To date, three runs have been completed. Results of the second and third runs are reported in this paper. The two runs considered in this report are the first of a series of nine to determine operating conditions that will yield maximum oil recovery from a column of mine-run shale. Variables studied :ire the oxygen content of the retorting gas and the space velocity of the retorting gas expressed as ft3 gas/ft3 bed/min. Oil recoveries for the two runs reported are 62.2 volume percent of Fischer assay for the run using higher oxygen and space velocity, compared with 39.3 volume-percent when less oxygen and a Lower space velocity were used.

The Bureau of Mines reviewed available data on the effect of crushing high - sulfur coals for the liberation of impurities in the light of increasingly stringent air pollution regulations . The survey , which provided information on Appalachian region coals only , indicated that such important coalbeds as the Upper and Lower Freeport and the Upper Kittanning show significant sulfur reductions when crushed to 14 - mesh top size . For many other coalbeds amenability to sulfur liberation by crushing was indicated , although too few samples were available to draw firm conclusions .

"INTRODUCTION Peat is the accumulated mass of plant materials that remain after partial decay under specific conditions. In the swampy peat bogs dead material which falls on the surface immediately is attacked by fungi and aercbic bacteria. Decay under these conditions is rapid, but of relatively short duration, since the constant addition of new material soon forces the older layers below the water level, in this position, without access to oxygen, the plant constituents are attacked mainly by anaerobic bacteria, and decomposition proceeds slowly. The largest part of peat is contributed by the woody tissues of plants, the chief constituents of which are cellulose and lignin, together with a small proportion of hemicelluloses. During the normal process of biological decay celluloses disappear more rapidly than lignin. The result is a complex substance known as humin, from which the humic acids may be extracted.In 1826, Sprengel 5 found that when decayed plant materials were extracted with alinnli and the resulting black liquid acidified with mineral acid a brown gelatinous precipitate was formed. To this product, which was a brown amorphous powder when dry, he gave the name ""humic acid'. Since that time, chemists have used the name rather loosely to designate products which have been isolated by very diverse means from soils, decayed woods, peat, lignite, and coal. An excellent review of the early work on humic acids was published by Baumann 6 in 1909. This publication aroused the interest of Oden, who then investigated the humic acids. An account of Oden’s work, as a good survey of the literature, is contained in his monograph “Die Huminsauren”. 7"

Short cylindrical charges were detonated in drill holes in rock to determine the effect that decoupling ( defined as the ratio of the radius of the hole to the radius of the charge ) has on the strain - generating abilities of explosions in rock . The amplitude and period of the strain pulses produced in the rock were studied as a function of distance , size of charge , and decoupling . The main results of these studies were that , for a given distance and size of charge , the amplitude of the strain pulse decreases as decoupling increases and the period of the strain pulse decreases at first and then increases as decoupling increases . A simplified theory of decoupling is presented that satisfactorily explains the experimental results . The information presented makes it possible to predict the effect of decoupling on explosiongenerated strain pulses in rock and thus helps the explosives user evaluate the effect of decoupling on his blasting .

"INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, ore-dressing tests were made on three samples procured by Bureau of Mines engineers from two properties in southeastern Juah County, Utah, each of which is known by the name Black Jack. To avoid confusion, the tests will be described under the names of the owners Kendall-Duvall and the Empire Mines.None of the samples were amenable to ore dressing for the production of high-grade manganese sinter.Ores from the Kendall-Duvall deposit represent an interesting metallurgical phase of low-grade manganese occurrence, as the occurrence of manganese as silicate (braunite) automatically governs the extent to which they can be beneficiated by mechanical methods of treatment. As less than 50 percent of the total manganese was recoverable by complex methods of treatment in a 40- percent-manganese sinter, attempts were made to recover most of the manganese in a low-calcite, intermediate-grade product that might be acceptable for subsequent metallurgical treatment. By selective flotation of calcite and manganese, up to 68 percent recoveries were obtained in plus 20-percent manganese products..No encouragement can be given for successful ore-dressing of Empire ores as represented by samples received for testing, as no products were obtained that would meet minimum marketing specifications. Empire ore contained only 1 percent lime and might be high enough in grade (19 percent manganese) for direct hydrometallurgical treatment."

The borides of the transition metals in Groups IV and VI exhibit, in addition to a certain degree of hardness, considerable resistance to heat and oxidation. They have high melting points (1,850°-3,060° C.) and low coefftcients of thermal expansion and can be bonded with other materials and hot-pressed to desired shape (cermets). Suggested uses for the borides include use in rockets and jet engines, as thermocouple protection tubes, as containers for molten metals in die casting, as flame-plated coatings on less refractory compositions to prevent erosion by hot gases, and as control rods and neutron shielding material in nuclear engineering, The Federal Bureau of Mines investigation of zirconium diboride started in 1950 at the Boulder City Nev,, Metallurgy Research Laboratory, Its purpose was to reduce the cost of raw materials for the production of zirconium diboride.

"The average heat requirement per barrel of crude refined in the United States rose from 579,000 B. t. u. in 1940 to 584,000 B. t. u. in 1941. This marked the second successive year in which there was an apparent loss in fuel efficiency at refineries. This ""loss"" took place despite an increase in crude runs, which used to be an invariable indicator of a lower average.Probably the chief factor in the increased heat requirement in 1941 was the gain in the over-all gasoline yield from 43.1 percent in 1940 to 44.2 percent in 1941. Possibly another important factor was the further use of obsolete equipment to increase throughput.The refiners used more of all kinds of fuel excapt coke in 1941 than in 1940. However, the only fuels which increased materially in relative importance were refinery gas, which contributed 51.6 percent of the total heat units in 1941 compared with 50.7 percent in 1940, and natural gas, the share of which rose from 17.1 percent in 1940 to 18.0 percent in 1941. The changes in the percentages for the other fuels were as follows: Oil decreased from 25.7 to 24.1 percent; acid sludge fell from 2.7 to 2.5; coal remained at 3.4 percent; and coke (including steam) fell from 0.5 to 0.4 percent.New records for fuel efficiency were set in all three of the districts east of the Mississippi, namely, East Coast, Appalachian, and Indiana, Illi¬nois, etc. All the ether districts reported higher average fuel requirements in 1941, except the Louisiana Gulf and Arkansas-Louisiana inland.Since the year of the first statistics, the refiners have steadily increased their purchases of electricity. In 1941 total purchases were 1,862,996,000 kilowatt-hours, or 11 percent more than in 1940."

The Bureau of Mines developed a fast, reliable modification of the Griess-Ilosvay procedure suitable for field analysis for NO2 in the fumes from explosives. Known concentrations of NO2-air mixtures were analyzed for the nitrous acid or nitrite formed in the reaction with three Griess-Ilosvay-type reagents by diazotizing and coupling. Comparison was made of the Rider-Mellon, Saltzman, and Patty-Petty procedures; the three procedures are in agreement if sufficient time of contact between NO2 and the reagents is allowed. In experiments to obtain an accurate factor for converting NO2 to nitrite, overnight contact was allowed in order to be sure conversion was complete. The factor was found to be 75 percent with a standard deviation of ±3.2. Low and erratic results were found using either the Saltzman or Patty-Petty reagents as absorbing liquids unless several hours&apos; contact was allowed. If dilute NaOH solution was used as the absorbing liquid instead of a Griess-Ilosvay-type reagent, 92 percent of the overnight conversion factor was found after a 3-minute shaking time and a la-minute standby time. The Saltzman reagent was preferable for fieldwork with the dilute NaOH solution as the absorbent because of its easy application, rapid reaction, and intense color even at low NOB concentrations.

The Harding pegmatite dike is well known for the production of spodumene and lepidolite in the period 1920 to 1930. It attained greater prominence during the last war by being the largest producer of domestic tantalum ore from the rare mineral microlite. The deposit is believed to be the only proved reserve of tantalum ore in the United States today. In 1943 the main portion of a large tantalum-bearing zone in the Harding dike was developed by the Bureau of Mines with the assistance of the Federal Geological Survey. Analysis of this zone from 39 diamond drill holes and quarry exposures showed a large deposit containing 2 pounds of microlite per ton and 21 percent spodumene, In September 1948, the Bureau of Mines resumed development of the deposit with a view to extending the tantalum-bearing zone farther to the southwest or delimiting the ore body. Seven diamond-drill holes failed to penetrate the ore zone in its southwestward projection, Much of the following general information is summarized from the report on the first exploratory work of the Bureau of Mines by John H. Soule.2/

This report presents all available 900 ° C BM- AGA carbonization and related data for coals from the principal beds of the southwest Virginia field in a form which permits ready comparison of product yields and properties of coals and cokes . Thirty- one channel samples from Buchanan , Dickenson , Russell , Tazewell , and Wise Counties were carbonized at 900 ° C in an 18 - inch - diameter retort . Blending properties of 10 of the coals were studied , and expansion of most of the coals and blends was measured in the Bureau of Mines sole - heated oven . Ash Most of the samples were chemically suitable for metallurgical use in coking blends , and their coking properties generally were satisfactory . content exceeded 10 percent in only three samples , and none of the coals contained more than 1.5 percent sulfur . Dry , mineral - matter - free fixed - carbon content of the coals ranged from 62.1 to 77.5 percent . Expansion behavior varied widely , ranging from 16.8 percent expansion to 27.6 percent contraction .

The current use of Mid - Continent crude oil for the manufacture of war products , such as aviation gasoline and lubricating cil , has caused an acute shortage of available supply from established sources . Therefore , refiners who heretofore have had no reason to use West Texas crude oils now are considering them as charging stock and need more information concerning their characteristics . The Bureau of Mines has published several reports3/ giving analyses of the most important of these crude oils . However, to make the applicable data in these publications readily available to refiners , the present compilation of analyses of West Texas crude oils has been prepared . Data showing the effect of catalytic desulfurization of naphthas from West Texas crude oils have been presented in a restricted Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations . These analyses were made under the general supervision of R. A. Cattell , chief, Petroleum and Natural Gas Division, Bureau of Mines , Washington, D. C. , and N. A. C. Smith, supervising engineer , Fetroleum Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines , Bartlesville, Okla . , and under the direct supervision of Harold M. Both immediate and long-range economic factors are associated with blending anthrafines to produce metallurgical cokes, and they warrant careful consideration of the technology of carbonization of blends containing significant proportions of inert substances in general and anthrafines in particular. This situation has resulted in numerous publications dealing with various phases of the overall problem, particular emphasis being placed on the effects of inert substances on the yields and quality of cokes produced. Because relatively little attention has been given to the expansion behavior of coal blends containing inert substances, an investigation of this problem was undertaken using the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. Since experiments in the sole-heated oven do not measure wall pressures directly, a new method of interpretation of sole-heated oven data, which permits estimates of wall pressures, has been proposed.

For the first time the Bureau of Mines is combining, in one report, comprehensive tabulations on both beehive and slot-type ovens. This publication presents statistical data on the number and capacity of all such coke ovens in the United States on December 31, 1957. Combining data on both types of ovens should prove helpful to those interested in keeping abreast of the latest changes in carbonizing capacity, particularly since the coke has similar properties and uses. Annual reports furnished to the Bureau of Mines by coke-oven operators shared that 78 oven-coke plants were operating in 22 States on December 31, 1957. This was a decline of one plant from December 31, 1956, as the Republic Steel Corp. took the ovens at Canton, Ohio, out of production on December 17, 1957, for dismantling and rebuilding in 1958. Total oven-coke capacity was 80,299,400 tons in 1957.
