A European Directive on Identification & Traceability of explosives came into effect on the 4th of April 2008. This directive is intended to establish a harmonised system for the unique identification and traceability of all packaged explosives, detonators, reels of detonating cord and primers used in civil applications across the European Union. The directive must be adopted into the national legislation of each European Union member state by the 5th of April 2009 with compliance achieved throughout Europe by the 5th of April 2012. The requirements of the Directive apply to all explosives manufactured, used and imported into the European Union from 5th April 2012.

Mining tradition holds that a parallel round underground can not be any deeper than it’s smallest face dimension. ln other words, a mine using a 12’ (3.7 m) high by 24’ (7.3 m) wide room and pillar mine, the deepest pull that can be achieved is plus or minus 12’ (3.7 m). After experience with decking of rounds in a 12’ (3.7 m) diameter shaft to achieve more than 12’ (3.7 m) advance per round, the concept of deepening the pull on horizontal parallel rounds seemed to be a feasible concept. Tests were conducted in a conventional room and pillar metal mine with a round size of 12’ (3.7 m) high by 24’(7.3 m) wide. Standard rounds were drilled with a 16’ (4.9 m) steel as parallel rounds to an average depth of 14.5’ (4.4 m). The average depth of pull on these rounds was about 13’ (4.0 m). Using the available drilling equipment, 20’ (6.1 m) drill steel was used to drill holes to an average depth of 18’ (5.5 m). Five rounds were drilled and shot with a resulting aven$e pull of 16.2’ (4.9 m) or 90 % of drilled depth. Rounds were designed with decked bum cuts to maximize depth of pull in the cut area An innovative method of de&mining drilling accuraq was used to estimate it’s effect on depth of pull in the rounds. This method used a standard automatic 35-mm camera and scaling to determine the average drill deviation for many of the holes in the rounds.

A shaped charge is an explosive device used to focus detonation energy in a desired direction. Shaped charges have numerous applications in several industries such as oil extraction, weaponry and demolition. The focusing of the detonation energy is the result of the Munroe Effect, which greatly increases the penetration properties of the explosive due to a void in the explosive’s volume. The void in the explosive is lined with a metal substrate that becomes a super-heated projectile when the explosive is detonated. Additive Manufacturing (AM) can allow greater design freedom and geometric complexity for the liner portion of the shaped charge. Specifically, hierarchical structuring and functional grading can potentially provide greater velocity, directionality, and efficiency. By utilizing AM, the conventional use of shaped charges can be greatly expanded upon and may open new possibilities. In this work, selective laser melting (SLM) was used to explore different conical shaped charge (CSC) liners made out of stainless steel 304L. A series of liners were tested that had varying densities and were compared to conventional liners. The CSCs were filled with the high explosive Composition C-4 and detonated to evaluate performance. The blast events were recorded using break wire screens to calculate the velocity of the jet through steel target plates over a standoff of 6 times the charge diameter. A high-speed camera recorded the blast event to calculate the velocity of the jet through the air. The depth of penetration into the steel target plates was also used as a measurement of the effectiveness of the CSCs. The aim of this work is to show the potential for advanced shaped charges produced using SLM.

"Large scale open pit mining and quarrying operations dictate safe and reliable pit wall stability. The current approach of employing the particle velocity-scaled charge distance approach to estimate and minimize damage to residential structures is considered inadequate to protect rock slopes. This study utilizes close-in blasting vibration data as input to an advanced 2D numerical code to study its applicability to serve as a predictive tool in terms of blast-induced rock slope failure. Two tri-axial accelerometer stations, consisting of high-frequency and high-amplitude (20 kHz, 100g) sensors, located within ~100m of the blast, but at two different bench levels, were used to monitor a production blasting in a quarry. The production blast consisted of double-decked explosive loads in 155 mm (6 in) diameter holes, with an inter-deck delay of 42 ms, and each deck consisting of 130 kg (285 lb) of emulsionexplosive. The blasting vibration data obtained at the two bench levels were critically analyzed, and thevibration results served as input to the numerical model consisting of a single rock block with a 45 degree persistent joint plane but with specified strength properties, significantly different from that of the intact rock. The model was able to characterise progressive accumulation of damage in the form of micro-cracks along the joint surface as a function of the vibration load from successive explosive decks. The results showed that such a numerical model can serve as a very good diagnostic and predictive tool, when backed up by careful vibration monitoring and further supported by detailed slope monitoring."

Due to their high amount of stored energy, explosives have been the cause of many serious injuries and fatalities over the last centuries. Despite safety advances and awareness in the last decades, injuries and fatalities continue to occur at mining operations due to blasting. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, from 1978 to 2001, blasting incidents claimed 106 lives and were responsible for over 1000 injuries in mines in the US. The main causes of incidents found today are flyrock, blast area security and premature detonations. The concerted efforts of the mining and explosives industries and labour and government agencies have greatly improved the safety record of blasting in mines.

Any organization that subjects its activities to a continuous improvement methodology, aiming to optimize their processes and services, must be able to adequately measure the results of the implemented changes to pursue better outcomes. This is no different for mining companies. When it comes to blasting, an accurate fragmentation analysis can correlate blast design and rock mass parameters to particle size distribution, enabling us to further analyze the correspondence of specific design patterns, applied to specific rock mass properties and the result in measured fragmentation indicators. Over time, many tools were developed for us to obtain PSD data, albeit each of them had their own shortcomings. The first ones to be developed involved photographing the muck pile including a scale object, uploading those photos to a PC, and using specialized software to analyze each one. As a result, analysts would get a PSD curve that served as reference for the performance of the blast. This method, which is still used, has major shortcomings. The most obvious one is that it is only able to capture a slice of the blast, which corresponds to the exposed section of the muck pile the analyst has access to, and even there its reach is limited to the areas that are safe for getting close enough for placing the scale, which are not many. Consequently, this is a very limited way to get a fragmentation performance assess for a blast. Currently, autonomous systems are capable of taking continuous pictures of the muck pile. Installed on a shovel, conveyor belt or crusher feed, these systems can take a continuous stream of pictures that are later analyzed automatically without the need of human intervention. These systems greatly increase the volume of data and, consequently, we have a PSD curve that is more representative of the blast performance. However, this technology still had issues when trying to sample front end loaders mining operations or getting results from underground blasting due to the inherent difficulties of these operations. New algorithms used for capturing and processing data for front end loaders can overcome the harsh environment of their operations and produce PSD data in high vibration environments and difficult mining angles. For underground mining, algorithms can be used to sample each truck exiting the mine, giving a reliable source of fragmentation analysis that can be traced back to their stope of origin. The development of this technology extends the existing system’s capabilities and helps us in our efforts to improve fragmentation results with each blast.

This work investigates the performance of some of the measurement techniques used in vibrations from blasting monitoring. Two tri-axial geophones with cases of different size, shape and mass were tested in a shaker table. The geophone cases were mounted in three different ways on a granite slab fixed to the plate of the shaker: freely placed, sandbagged, and anchored. A known horizontal periodic motion of constant amplitude, and frequency from 16 to 200 Hz, was applied to the slab. Two amplitude levels of 5 and 20 mm/s (0.2 and 0.79 in/s) were applied when the sensors were sandbagged or anchored and only 5 mm/s when no holding force was applied. The transmissibility of vibrations from the rock to the longitudinal geophone as function of the frequency (i.e. ratio of response of the geophone to the slab motion) has been obtained for each measuring condition tested. The transmissibility is considered a composition of the transmissibility of the rock-to-sensor coupling and the transmissibility of the sensor’s mechanics and electronics. The transmissibility of the coupling is obtained normalizing the total transmissibility with the transmissibility of the seismographs, obtained by a suitable test to which a coupling transmissibility of 1 is assigned. Geophone-to-rock coupling is a resonant phenomenon that may alter the amplitude of the measured waveforms by a factor of 1.2 to less than 0.6. The most accurate and precise measurements are obtained with geophones anchored to rock. On the contrary, freely placed or sandbagged sensors are non-predictable planting conditions that lead to high amplification or damping in most of the frequency band analyzed. It is also shown that existing acceleration criteria to select coupling methods do not necessary lead to good quality (accurate and precise) vibration data.

The collapse of the Vale S.A. mining tailings dam in 2019, a tragic event that shook Brazil and the world, had consequences that transcended the immediate pain and devastation. Among them, the suspension of rock blasting activities in several mines in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero region of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This measure, taken as a precaution and with the aim of ensuring the safety of nearby geotechnical structures and the population, had a significant impact on the mining production chain. To overcome these challenges and resume blasting activities in a safe and sustainable manner, the mining industry has been dedicated to developing and improving solutions. One of the promising alternatives is the signature hole technique, used in conjunction with attenuation laws. The complex geology of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero, with lenses of compact ores immersed in friable materials, the presence of discontinuity families, and the emergence of geological faults, requires detailed analyses and specific adaptations of the signature hole technique and constant monitoring of the vibrations to calibrate the attenuation laws to ensure compliance with permissible limits and safety of the operations. To demonstrate the methodology, a case study in Abóboras Mine was described. Additionally, the challenge of achieving the desired level of production while controlling vibration and slope damage has driven the development of new charging and timing techniques. To address this challenge, a comprehensive approach was undertaken. A substantial database containing more than 4,000 registers of blasting-induced vibration events from 520 blasts was meticulously compiled from 2020 to 2023, 6 different attenuation laws were established and continuously calibrated with 99.3% of compliance regarding permissible limits of vibrations. The successful implementation of these actions allowed for the resumption of blasting, increasing production from 10 million metric tons to 43 million metric tons per year assuring sustainable operation.

Due to rapid growth of mining activities in the country, the explosives industry has been developing very fast in terms of quantity, quality and types. , In this paper, India’s post independent chronological date regarding use of explosives, their types, their constraints and a profile of well-known manufacturers has been meticulously presented. A production figure for three years with system analysis has been presented. The paper also deals with present consumption pattern while making a futuristic forecast. In view of the anticipated changes that are to take place in mining industries in near future, the manufacturers of explosives have to pay a vital role. The paper highlights some concrete and valuable suggestions and recommendations. Small scale Companies have to limit their production to Slurry and Emulsion types of Cartridged explosives whereas the large manufacturing units have to concentrate on Bulk explosives, specialized explosives and better initiating systems. The large manufacturing units have also to make all concerted efforts to compete with global market for significant export. The Country for its rapid growth needs basic raw materials like Coal, Iron Ore and Limestone. So, the extraction of these minerals is of prime importance. The more we produce and consume, the more will be Industrialization. The Industrial growth rate has been around 6% during the last few years. As the Industrial growth rate is moderate, there is moderate increase in mineral extraction in the Country. Additional mineral extraction demands additional explosive production (Annexure-1).

The Air-tubes blasting method is provided in which a series of aligned boreholes are charged with explosive s and air tubes in a predetermined blasting pattern. The air tube is composed of cylindrical flexible tubes which have a predetermined width and length to be fit with the site boreholes. Within a preferred formation, each borehole is charged with the explo sives and detonators with an air tube installed just above the explosives. Stemming materials are filled above the air tubes. At the limestone mine of Sung-Shin Cement Co., in South Korea, these blasting tests were performed by a diameter 102 millimeter and 15 m long boreholes with the charging length of explosives was 8m to 10 m by the total weight of explosive 40 to 50 kg with 3m to 6m air tube which has a 76 mm diameter, and 1m to 3m stemming cover. Blasting results showed the about 10% to 30% explosives savings available and especially, the about 20% to 50% reduction of ground vibration with the low noise measures around 2dB to 5dB by this new blasting method which was compared with the conventional blasting methods. The explosives and air tubes may be alternately charged along the boreholes. The use of air tubes which were charged above an explosive layer allow to form the quantitative air decking in every blast hole. Therefore, the Air-deck effect can be easily obtained through this blasting method, and also easy to increase the fragmentation rate resulting in the more suitable mucking procedures at the working site with the minimum usages of explosives for the better economic operations in mine quarries.

Pastefill technology has gained an increasing popularity over the past decade. The main advantages are: environmental performance (mainly in tailings disposal), low operation costs and ease of operation, as well as homogeneous properties. However, its weaker nature compared to other types of fill makes it more vulnerable to blast damage. In the last few years, Louvicourt Mine has experienced some cases of pastefill sloughage during the mining of secondary stopes. In order to reduce pastefill sloughage, some studies have been undertaken to investigate the causes and to find possible solutions by looking at stope design, extraction sequence, ground support and blast design. This paper presents the results of a blast damage study carried out at Louvicourt on the 860m level. The instrumentation included vibration monitors (using 6 sets of triaxial geophones grouted in the pastefill), a borehole camera to observe the damage in the pastefill, and a cavity monitoring system for three-dimensional surveys of the blasted stope. The test stope was mined out by four slot blasts and three mass blasts. Most of the damage was created by the mass blasts. It was found that the accumulation of ground vibration was mainly due to the low seismic velocities in the pastefill and the relatively tight delay between blastholes. In addition, there was a substantial difference between the critical PPV in the confined and unconfined pastefill. In practice, these findings have led to modifications of blast design to minimise the exposure time of pastefill walls to air. Such modifications included changes of blast sequence in secondary stopes and delay layout between heavily loaded blastholes. Over the paste two years, the implementation of new blast sequence has shown encouraging results in terms of reduced pastefill sloughage and dilution.

The high temperature and high pressure of an explosive detonation can be used for the production of nanomaterials. The controlled detonation of explosive compositions along with the collection and characterization of reaction products encompasses a process known as detonation synthesis. The primary advantage of the method of detonation synthesis is the possibility for producing monocrystalline nanoparticles with diameters of less than 10 nm. In order to successfully synthesize nanomaterials via the detonation process, it is necessary that the explosive detonation is conducted in a sealed environment. This environment when pulled to a vacuum or purged with inert gas such as argon will reduce the oxidation of detonation reaction products. Detonation synthesis testing is currently being conducted in a 1.8 cubic meters (m3) (64.3 cubic feet (ft3)) ellipsoidal pressure vessel consisting of two interlocking half shells. The testing involves the controlled detonation of cast mixtures of Cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine (RDX) and 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene (TNT) in conjunction with siliceous compounds to produce nanocrystalline diamond and silicon carbide. Alternative detonation environments including the presence of a cooling medium such as water or dry ice to absorb residual, post detonation, thermal energy and enhance the stability of the materials being produced have improved yield. Modifications to the explosive charge composition have an effect on the type and quantity of materials that can be produced. Doping of explosive charges with various organic and inorganic compounds has shown promise in the synthesis of materials that are difficult or uneconomical to produce through other methods. This paper outlines the process development of detonation synthesis facilities. Preparation of the pressure vessel to create a suitable detonation environment for the production of nanomaterials is examined. Formulation of explosive charge compositions and considerations involving test charge initiation are discussed in detail. Experimental results and analysis from initial testing as well as plans for future research are also evaluated.

Question: When it comes to demolition projects, what could be more demanding than asking a blaster to explosively demolish a stubby, heavily-reinforced concrete structure in the heart of a third-world country? Answer: Asking them to fell only half. Such was the charge recently put forth to Controlled Demolition Group (CDG), Yorkshire, UK when they were called to Casablanca, Morocco to provide a stunning demolition effect for the upcoming Universal Pictures film Spy Game, starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. Director Tony Scott (True Romance, Enemy of the State) contacted the renowned demolition firm after seeing their work on television and receiving recommendations from explosives manufacturers. The film’s producers then asked the CDG team if they could bring down half of an apartment block as part of a dramatic suicide bomber sequence.

A South Africa iron ore mine reported a decline in blast performance and ore and waste fragmentation. Preliminary investigation by the explosives services company found that the straight gassed bulk emulsion was breaking down and collapsing inside of some loaded slept blastholes. The bulk emulsion loaded at the subject site was manufactured in country and shipped to various clients throughout the region, with normal function in blasts at other sites. Historically, the bulk formulation emulsion being used at the subject mine site also performed well and without issue. This raised the question, “why is this bulk emulsion now breaking down and not firing in blastholes?”. Iron ore mines are not typically associated with reactive or acidic ground, and ground sample reactivity testing against the emulsion confirmed this. So, if not reactive ground or acidic water, then what is causing the emulsion to breakdown?

Placer Dome, US operates the Bald Mountain Mine. The Bald Mountain Mine is a surface operation located in remote northwestern White Pine County in east-central Nevada, approximately midway between Elko and Ely. The mine is in the Newark Valley along the southwestern flank of Bald Mountain a part of the Ruby Mountain range, at an approximate elevation of 7,500 ft (2,286 m). The geology at the Bald Mountain Mine is highly altered, both mineralogically, and structurally. Highwall stability and control have long been an issue at the operation, due largely to the varying geologic conditions. In some blasts as many as seven distinct geologic unconformities exist. These unconformities affect both final high wall integrities, as well as blast fragmentation characteristics. A 60 million ton (54.5 million tonnes) layback expansion of the existing “Top Pit” as well as development of a new satellite pit, “Sage Flats”, is being undertaken. Design final highwall pit slopes have been steepened from the traditional 47º to 55º in order to reduce overall ore-to-waste ratios, thereby improving economic viability for the expansion over the 4.5 year life of the project. With the increased usage of electronic detonators throughout the mining industry, mine operations staff, as well as representatives from the mines explosive supplier felt that an evaluation program incorporating electronic detonators would be warranted. The areas of focus for this evaluation would be resultant highwall pre-split integrities, peak particle velocity measurements (both near field and far field), frequency measurements, loader productivity, and visual interpretation of the results. The mine incorporates 25 ft (7.6 m) benches and uses separate trim blasts in conjunction with production blasts in order to reduce blast effects along final highwalls. Hole diameters in production blasts are 7? ” (200 mm). Typical production blast patterns are 18 ft x 18 ft (5.5 m x 5.5 m), drilled in a square pattern configuration. Shot sizes vary greatly, ranging from 200 holes to as many as 800. Bulk low percentage ANFO/emulsion blends are utilized as the redominant blasting agent. Concrete is a common construction material used throughout the world, and with increasing demand of fast-track construction, blasting and concrete casting are occurring simultaneously at many sites where rock is being excavated for concrete placement. However, there has been significant disagreement in the construction industry as to what intensity of shock vibrations green, or fresh concrete can tolerate. Peak particle velocities are often arbitrarily chosen, or are simply based on materials such as plaster and drywall that have been more thoroughly studied in relation to damage. Previous research on green concrete has used the concrete’s static strength subjected to shockwaves at different ages as the primary damage criteria. In addition, the static strength tests have been based on curing time. However, changes in temperature or humidity can dramatically alter the hydration rate, which affects strength development of different cements. To account for temperature changes and humidity the concept of concrete maturity is commonly used and allows the researcher to see where the concrete was in terms of hydration progress. In general, static testing determines the failure stress that the concrete’s macrostructure can handle, and often failure occurs in the natural materials first or along large defects in casting techniques. Dynamic testing or high strain rate testing, on the other hand, loads materials at such a high rate that larger defects do not have time to react and instead the microstructure is more highly stressed leading to higher strength and stiffness values. This is known as the material’s strain rate sensitivity. Since dynamic testing better tests the microstructural strength, it is believed that it may provide a better way to assess damage to green concrete. Testing includes both static and dynamic compression as well as static and dynamic splitting tensile strength to assess whether damaged has occurred to the concrete. No significant statistical evidence was discovered that damage to the concrete occurred at five different “green” maturities from peak resultant velocities ranging from 10.66 in/s (271mm/s) to 4.40 in/s (112 mm/s) with average intensity of 6.7 in/s (170mm/s).

Efficient drill and blast operations are crucial for achieving optimal fragmentation, productivity, safety, and operational efficiency for the mining industry. However, conventional methods face significant challenges, including manual borehole marking and retrieval by survey teams, limited real-time data monitoring, excessive borehole collar deviation affecting blast quality, suboptimal drill productivity impacting person-hours and fuel usage, subjective judgment by drill operators on voids during drilling, and limitations in explosive charging design that do not match rock hardness. Rock hardness determination using lithological data from exploration models is often inaccurate due to the interpolation effect of wide drilling distances and depths, necessitating manual field verification using drill cuttings and historical blasting results. Furthermore, using single-density bulk emulsion throughout blast holes leads to suboptimal results due to varying rock properties. This study introduces an integrated approach that combines smart drilling technology with advanced emulsion technology to enhance drilling and blasting efficiency. The method utilizes smart drilling technology with GPS for precise borehole placement, Measure While Drilling (MWD) loggers, and real-time performance monitoring. Additionally, it integrates a smart Mobile Processing Unit (MPU) featuring a digital system and an automated gassing system (AGS). This setup allows for multiple emulsion densities within a single blast hole, customized to match the hardness index parameters determined from MWD data, addressing the challenges in drilling and blasting operations. The study evaluates the effectiveness of this innovative approach through comprehensive field trials and data analysis. While maintaining the digging rate according to production targets, key metrics such as drilling productivity, drilling accuracy, fuel consumption, powder factor, drilling and blasting cost, and fragmentation size were compared between conventional and new methods. Results showed a 56% increase in drilling accuracy, a 23% increase in penetration rate, a 19.6% increase in drilling productivity, and a 29% reduction in fuel consumption. This new method decreased the powder factor by 5.2%, impacting the drill & blast cost reduction by 2.3%. Moreover, fragmentation size improved by 12.8%, demonstrating the effectiveness of rock hardness-adjustable emulsion density in achieving better blast energy placement. In conclusion, integrating smart drilling and advanced emulsion technology significantly enhances drilling and blasting efficiency. This approach offers substantial cost savings and operational improvements, providing a strong rationale for adopting this innovative method in drilling and blasting activities.
