During the spring and summer of 1993 the largest pipeline in Tennessee was installed as part of the upgrading of Nashville's sewage needs through the year 2035. This new 3.3 million dollar outfall project is able to carry 330 million gallons of treated sewage water daily. Special projects required special equipment as this project was safely and quickly installed.

[Executive Director’s note: According to 17th edition of the ISEE Blasters Handbook in its section on trench blasting, “...consideration must be given to the proper venting of gases generated from the blasting. Should those gases spread laterally rather than vent directly to the surface, the gases may travel underground and finally vent well outside of the planned area. Such events may be caused by the strata, soil conditions or root systems, or existing and/or abandoned utilities or other man-made structures. In the worst situation, gases resulting from the detonation such as CO2, CO, and/or NOx may travel through the strata and find their way into basements of nearby homes or businesses. The IME has recommendations on how to minimize this potential problem. Some of the points include removing the overburden and digging the rock immediately after the shot, and drilling vent holes periodically between the ditch and adjacent homes.” The Board of Directors of the International Society of Explosives Engineers has expressed its concern that blasters be made aware of the issue of migration of carbon monoxide resulting from blasting operations. In an era where profits are constantly being eroded, mines are looking towards technology developments to assist them in solving mining problems and reducing mining costs. An emerging technology that could assist mines in becoming more cost effective is electronic detonators. Electronic detonators have been under development for several years. Over the past three years, the spotlight has fallen on commercial use of electronic detonators and the extent to which the promise of precise and programmable timing can assist mines with their environmental and productivity problems. This paper uses case studies to demonstrate both surface and underground applications where electronic detonators and blasting systems were used to solve typical mining problems such as vibration and fragmentation. Safety aspects such as hanging wall conditions and high wall stability also benefited from the use of electronic detonators. The paper also demonstrates how the use of accurate electronic detonators and blasting systems has resulted in improved/more even fragmentation with further downstream efficiencies. These efficiencies may include increased cast percentages, reduced oversized rocks, quicker cleaning times and increased production rates.

Operations using draglines to remove the overburden above coal seams have increasingly turned to cast blasting to improve productivity and reduce costs. Many such operations also employ active highwall pre- splitting to produce highwalls of well defined configuration, behind which the subsequent blast can be designed and implemented to maximize casting. In some cases isolating the block to be blasted allows water to drain out of the rock mass and provides the opportunity to use less costly explosives.

This research program was undertaken to better understand the factors causing abnormal NOx fumes generation from blasting operations in surface coal mining. More specifically, unusual quantities of nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide have been observed at several surface coal mines in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming. All these mining operations have several points in common: (i) Blasting is performed using gravity loaded emulsions or emulsion/ANFO blends (ii) Unusual NOx (Oxides of Nitrogen) emissions are observed mostly when blasting is conducted in the overburden as opposed to the coal seam itself (iii) The overburden consists of very weakly consolidated ground strata, providing relatively weak confinement conditions for the explosives, and (iv) Significant ground water is observed.
