Prairie Mines & Royalty Ltd. produces over 12 million tonnes annually of thermal coal for TransAlta’s Sundance and Keephills power stations from the Highvale Mine. This opencast mine is next to a lake and is surrounded by cottages and farms, which means that blast vibrations and air overpressure have to be kept to a minimum.

This study is based on a six month study performed for Lee County, Florida. The study was based on blasting for land development and how this type of blasting affects structures. The study is investigates peak particle velocities and the relationship to other environmental and manmade forces that affect structures. The study also explores the effect of geology on blast vibration. After completion in Lee County, the study was then continued in the quarry environment in Vermont and extremely tight blasting environment of New York City. Charge diameters were 127mm (5 inches) or less.

Many blasting companies are using simulated production ground vibration waveforms to aid them in the control of their vibration effects. The simulations are typically produced by using a seismograph to record a signature waveform from a single hole shot and subsequently applying the various delays to be used in a proposed production design. The ability of this simulation method to give good results usually depends on three primary factors. These are: 1) the homogeneity of the seismic travel path from hole to hole; 2) the consistency of the seismic energy release per unit of explosive from hole to hole; and 3) whether or not the delays fire as planned.

The quarry mines a rare pink granite which is used for facings and panels in the construction of high rise buildings around the world. The discussion includes geological considerations, block layout, drilling, explosives loading, block handling, and mobile equipment utilization.

This paper is one sided because it presents the problem, but not the solution. The problem of blisters (bubbles) and occasional tears in caisson liners occurred when blasting and we have not found a conclusive cause nor a preventive solution. Increasingly, electronic blast initiation systems are being made available to the mining and construction community, both in South Africa and internationally. Indeed, in some parts of the world, perhaps half a dozen electronic products are being used, with a choice also of shock tube, electric and fuse and igniter cord systems. As these developments have taken place, improvements have been made in safety, reliability and accuracy, so much so that high performances in all these areas are now expected. However, disadvantages often seen by customers, other than : higher price, are decreased user-friendliness and loss of flexibility.

Located in the Chestnut Ridge Mountains of Southwestern Pennsylvania, the Casparis mine named for the founder Kenneth Casparis operated from 1916 until the early 1950. producing crushed stone for construction and railroad ballast. The rock was transported by aerial buckets to a railroad tipple nearly 1000’ (304.80 meters) below the mine. The mine property is now owned by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and is located in the Loyalhanna limestone seam with 4 primary entries that are approximately 40’ (12.19 meters) high by 30’ (9.14 meters) wide and extend over 2 miles (3.22 kilometers) into the mountain.

Since the Republic Mine began production in the mid 1950's, drilling and blasting practices have continually changed. In recent years, progress has been achieved through the development of more precise blast engineering methods, in greatly increasing the use of non-water resistant ammonium nitrate explosives, and in changing to a non-electric in-hole delay initiation system. Also, recent experience indicates that ammonium nitrate fueled with nitropropane and methanol is a viable substitute for aluminized AN-FO.

These cycled "prills" offer significant improvement in ANFO mixing time, detonation velocity performance, and heaving capabilities. In addition, their safety characteristics are better than standard ANFO explosives.

The current basis for rating of commercial explosives is examined, with particular emphasis on calculated bulk and weight strengths, detonation velocity and underwater energy measurement. The calculated strengths still form the basis for selecting explosives for most blasting applications, with the measured detonation parameters serving only as a measure of the quality of the explosive. The major drawbacks with this approach are discussed, in view of the non-ideal nature of commercial explosives and the field conditions prevalent during the blasting operation. A unified approach to rating explosives on the basis of blasting performance rather than calculated energy alone is presented for various types of explosives. This incorporates the relevant field parameters as well as the effect of non-ideal reactions, both of which affect explosive energy release and its transfer to target rock.

Blasting at Sebesi in Central Tutupan Pit area in South Kalimantan, Indonesia is planned to be using emulsion, where used oil makes up 50% of the total emulsion fuel. The significant amount of used oil from various mining operation units had been of deep concern since it might be reused to implement environmental programs by substituting 50% of fuel with used oil in emulsion, thus decreasing fuel consumption and increasing efficiency by reducing fuel cost. Used oil must pass laboratory test to meet the Indonesian National Standards (SNI) No. 7642:2010 of used oil specification. Other considerations include the location which is adjacent to the mine office facilities with a radius of <1,750 meters (5,741 feet). Thus, appropriate methods must be performed to meet the SNI No. 7571:2010 of vibration threshold in order to implement safe blasting technique and prevent potential damage.

Anaheim Bay, located at Seal Beach, California, is the site of the Huntington Harbor development of waterfront homes and marine facilities. The main entrance to Anaheim Bay is a relatively narrow channel connecting the bay with the Pacific Ocean which runs under California State Highway One. During the development of Huntington Harbor the old highway bridge was replaced with a new, higher bridge to allow for boat passage through the channel. At that time only the main span decking of the old bridge was removed, leaving the support pillars and the approach ramps in place (see Figure 1). The narrowness of this channel, plus the increasing boat traffic created a situation in which public demand for the removal of the old bridge became significant. Because the bridge was located within the boundaries of the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station (see Figure 2) the Navy became involved in the bridge removal. Eventually the task was assigned to the Naval Amphibious Construction Battalion One and work began in early 1974.

Bloomfield Collieries Rix’s Creek Mine is an open cut coal operation located in the Hunter Valley region of Australia. The mine produces approximately 1.1 mt of saleable product per year and routinely employs cast-blasting practices for its unique dragline-truck overburden excavation method.

Fracture Control Blasting is an alternative to pre- and post-splitting or smooth wall blasting. It was developed at the University of Maryland as an attempt to overcome some of the disadvantages that occur with normal blasting practices. There are two main factors that are unique to fracture control blasting. First, it utilizes a notched or grooved borehole to initiate fractures at desired locations and secondly, it employs a very carefully selected charge so as to provide control over borehole pressure. The maximum borehole pressure must be kept between very definite limits in order to obtain initiation of fractures at locations where they are desired and yet not obtain fractures where they are not desired. When coupled with stem induced fracturing, which was developed for oil and gas well stimulation, it has been found that the charge required for fracture control can be as little as 1/40th that required for normal smooth wall blasting. The paper describes the technique of fracture control blasting and gives results of some of the field testing conducted to date.

This contribution reports an investigation of the blasting damage in the contour of an access ramp to a Swedish underground laboratory for nuclear waste related studies. Near zone vibration measurements were made for 7 rounds and the results converted to a site specific scaling law. A simple engineering correction for the influence of the charge length wee developed and the resulting equations used to predict the damage zone depths of three different drilling and charging patterns.

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SD Mines), located in Rapid City, South Dakota, is one of only a few universities in the United States that offer a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering. The Department of Mining Engineering and Management (MEM) at SD Mines teaches courses that introduce students to concepts related to mining, including a course covering explosives engineering. Students are taught the basics of explosives theory and application in the mining and construction industry through a series of lectures and assignments. With limited field experience, many students find some topics difficult; these include: flyrock, ground vibration, timing, and others. Some US mining schools have an experimental mine in which they can simulate field conditions and conduct hands-on training, but not all universities have such facilities. For those without, teaching certain concepts can be more challenging in a pure classroom environment. To counteract the lack of an experimental mine, the mining department at SD Mines implemented Paradigm (Version 18.4.4984.0; McKenzie, 2017) a computerbased blast modeling software to improve the learning environment.
