The air dense medium fluidized bed separator which has been developed for the dry beneficiation of coal is recognized as a low cost and high efficiency process. The success of this separator for beneficiating any specific coal, alone or in combination with other processing methods, mostly depends on the characteristics of run-of-mine coal. Therefore, a thorough knowledge of the mineralogical composition and washability characteristics of representative coal sample is highly essential for correctly and effectively assess the suitability of this process. Available literature conforms that although the characteristics of Indian non-coking coals are well known, the correlations between the particle compositions with its density are entirely lacking. In the present study the washability, proximate, ultimate and elemental analysis was conducted for four typical Indian high-ash non-coking coals and their elemental compositions were well correlated with the specific gravity of coal. The results obtained in this study provide some essential information to the coal-processing engineer for efficiently operate and control the process. Furthermore, the beneficiation potential of air dense medium fluidized bed was experimentally evaluated and compared with the results obtained from an operating wet beneficiation plant. Based on this comparative study the air dense medium fluidized bed is established to be a possible alternative to the conventional wet beneficiation method for beneficiating Indian coals with Ep values in the range of 0.03 to 0.06

Bubble collisions with ore grains and a selective formation of the bubble-grain aggregates are necessary steps for flotation separation of useful and gangue components of an ore. For the attachment of valuable mineral grain to the colliding bubble a liquid film, separating the bubble and the grain needs to rupture during short time of their collision. High hydrophobicity of the grain surface is favorable because stability of the separating (wetting) film is much lower at such surfaces, that is, the film ruptures faster and at greater thickness. Simultaneously, it needs to be kept in mind and taken into consideration that high affinity to air is a typical feature of hydrophobic surfaces. Thus, when the hydrophobic surface is immersed into aqueous phase the air can stay attached to such surfaces and affect kinetics of the bubble attachment. The paper presents results and analysis of dynamic phenomena occurring upon the collision of the rising bubble followed by its attachment to hydrophobic (Teflon) plates of different roughness. The influence of the Teflon surface roughness, solution concentration, bubble size and impact velocity on bouncing of the colliding bubble, time of the three phase contact (TPC) formation and drainage time of the liquid film, formed between the solid and bubble surfaces, is described. High hydrophobicity, as showed earlier (Malysa et al, 2005), does not assure that each collision leads to the TPC formation and attachment of the colliding bubble. Roughness is the parameter of crucial importance for kinetics of the bubble attachment to hydrophobic surfaces (Krasowska and Malysa, 2007; Krasowska et al, 2009; Kosior et al, 2011). Enlarged roughness of the Teflon plate, from ca. 1 to 80µm, results in shortening the time of the TPC formation (bubble attachment) by over an order of magnitude - from 105 to a few milliseconds only. Higher surface roughness means that larger amount of air can be entrapped in bigger scratches and cavities of the Teflon plate during its immersion into aqueous phase. Results documenting importance of the air presence are showed and mechanism of the air facilitated TPC formation and bubble attachment to hydrophobic surfaces is described. "Chromite ore is an indispensable raw material in the manufacture of ferro-chrome and charge-chrome, which are used for the production of stainless and other alloy steels. The demand for chromite ore is ever increasing because of increasing consumption of these steels. Keeping this in view, Tata Steel is keen to recover values from fines and wastes, and also to produce value added products from their captive chromite mines and its processing plants.Tata Steel has its captive chromite resources at Sukinda, Orissa. They contain two ore types, i.e. (i) Ferruginous and (ii) Siliceous. The generation of off-grade ores is an increasing trend and simultaneously customer quality requirements are becoming ever more stringent. The ferruginous type ore also contains a considerable quantity of in-situ fines (~20% particles below 0.5 mm) that compound the beneficiation problem.In many places, in India and abroad, mined non-marketable off-grade and low grade chromite ores are upgraded by using either simple classification techniques like screw classification, hydrosizing, hydrocycloning or conventional gravity concentration processes such as Heavy media separation, Jigging, Spiraling, Tabling etc.At Tata Steel, the ferruginous type ores are treated in Chrome Ore Beneficiation (COB) Plant that comprises: a crushing and grinding circuit; a classification circuit using hydrocyclones; and a beneficiation circuit using 4 stage spirals in the coarse circuit (-0.5+0.1 mm) and 3 stage spirals & tables in the fine circuit (-0.1+0.038 mm). In this process, 3 types of tailings are being generated and together analyses about 17 % Cr2O3, which is high. From the present operation the chromite recovery is around 70% and could not produce coarse concentrates (+0.5 mm size). Whereas the siliceous type ore is treated in the Lumpy Ore Processing (LOP) plant, consisting of crushing-washing & classification-hand sorting operations, to produce marketable grade lumpy ore and –10 mm de-slimed fines. These fines are intermittently treated in the COB plant. The higher silica content (greater than 1%) and low Cr/Fe ratio (less than 2.8) are the problems with these concentrates."

"As native gold resources are depleted, gold-sulfide ores consisting essentially of pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite become one of the major precious metal sources, being presently estimated to account for more than 40 % of total world gold reserves.The prime objective of flotation of gold-bearing sulfide minerals is to increase precious metal recovery and to reduce the product cost through achieving maximum selectivity of the separation process. Separation of Fe and As sulfides in selective flotation of gold-bearing ore products helps reduce the amount of ore mass being sent to hydrometallurgical processing, and permits of recovering gold from As-free gold-containing pyrite concentrate by using a lower-cost pyrometallurgical procedure.An ingenious methodology purposively developed by the authors for comprehensive assessment of flotation properties, electrophysical characteristics and crystal chemistry features of natural gold-bearing sulfide minerals of different origin has been used in this study.Comparison of the elemental composition, non-stoichiometry and flotation activity of different monomineralic pyrite varieties revealed that samples with negligible impurity content are nearly stoichiometric, and show similar flotation properties. Samples with high Cu, As and Au contents are highly non-stoichiometric and readily floatable, even in a highly alkaline environment. Samples with high surface sulfur content and the most defective crystal lattices, with iron atoms substituting for sulfide vacancies, are most sensitive to depressive action of the alkali.A correlation between the type of conductivity, impurity content and amount of xanthate compounds on the surface and in the liquid phase of monomineralic pyrite and arsenopyrite suspensions detected by the extractive spectrophotometric analysis has been identified and analyzed. Experiments showed that the proportion of cuprous xanthate in sorptive collector layers on sample surfaces increases with increasing Cu content of the samples. In general, pH for pH, overall xanthate sorption on pyrite is greater than on arsenopyrite, with the difference increasing in passing from an acid environment to an alkaline one. A significant decrease in xanthate sorption on arsenopyrite is observed at pH greater than 9, whereas sorption on pyrite markedly decreases at pH greater than 11."

"Compañía Minera Dona Inés de Collahuasi, CMDIC, has developed a methodology that allows estimating economic benefit taking into account the variability of the ore characteristics (geometallurgical models). Currently, the grinding model allows predicting the treatment capacity, specific power and balls consumption for short, mid and long term planning. An alternative impact test to estimate SAG grinding parameters is presented in order to bring the geometallurgical model from mid and long term to short term planning. The impact test uses either the production bench or geological drill holes. This allows Geologists increasing the density of grinding parameters within the block model improving the geostatistical estimation of the rest of the blocks. The test requires a small amount of sample to obtain the requires grinding parameters for the grinding model in comparison to the well known grinding test and also, it can be performed easily and quickly by the geology team of a mining company. The alternative grinding test is presented in this article. The grinding model using this short grinding test has been successfully used in mining planning and the accuracy of the model is demonstrated using monthly average instantaneous throughput from January 2013 to March 2014, showing an average relative error of 5% and an R2 value of 0.9. Also, 111 individual variability samples were divided into two each, in order to compare the estimated grinding parameters based on this alternative test to the grinding parameters obtained from the conventional grinding test. The comparison shows an average relative error of 4% and an R2 value of 0.9."

The North-West Russia for 70 years is one the main producers of Cu, Ni, Co, Al, P, REE, Zr, Ti, Ta, Nb, Fe ores and other minerals in the Europe. The largest mining companies locates in the Murmansk region, and they extracts about 100 mln. tons of ores and damps up to 250 mln. tons of waste annually. Nevertheless an environmental situation in the region is stable due to rational management and treatment of wastes on a base of the Noosphere Concept for Nature-using suggested by Vladimir Vernadsky. The Concept was performed practically in the Fersman’ scheme of “non-waste mining and metallurgical complex”, published in the monograph “Minerals of the Kola Peninsula: current status – analyses – prognoses” (1941) and served till now as a sort of “Bible” for industry managers lightening a strategy for an industrial “trophic chain”. The recent status of this scheme is shown on the picture below, and one can see that our concept is coincide with modern ideology known as the “Industrial Ecology”. Moving along this mainstream in the Kola Peninsula since 1929, when the first mining company “Apatit” was established, we provided the water close circuit in mineral dressing plants, hydrometallurgical treatment of slag and tailings, productions of building materials and adsorbents of wastes. The innovation set of technologies designed by the Kola Science Centre allow recently to involve tailing damps in re-exploitation as the technogenic deposits of valuable raw materials for fertilizers, tanning and cleaning agents, pigments, concretes and etc.

Today we see a paradigm shift in political, environmental, and economic trends, which are challenging the mining industries. It is very clear that these issues are reaching unparalleled scale and complexity. Cost efficiency and corporate social responsibility are the two primary drivers for the mining industry today. The current challenges facing the industry include: ? Due to deterioration of quality of ores, the scale of operations has become humongous which necessitates high degree of automation and remote operations ? Scarcity of skilled manpower and the necessity to minimize employment of humans at unsafe locations ? Automation of routine activities, improving the efficiency of operations and reducing the cost of production ? Land, water and energy have become scarce in most of the resource rich regions In the current macroeconomic conditions, it is obvious that the industry is under tremendous pressure and it is imperative that the industry embraces sustainability, enhanced energy efficiency, and improved resource allocation. Closely related sectors like energy and utilities have set an example by acknowledging the need to alter their business practices to meet the essentials of sustainability, adoption of new operating models, policy and regulation structures. There is a need to continuously optimize the operations across the entire process value chain as well as across geographies in order to meet the market demand while dealing with supply chain constraints. The goals of optimization could be enhancement in productivity, reduction of production costs, carbon footprint, etc. The gamut of operations is vast, starting from exploration to mining, mineral processing, smelting, refining, casting, rolling (deformation processing), heat treatment, and finally manufacturing of industrial products / components. Advances in information and communication technologies (ICT) in combination with modeling and optimization tools have made it possible to address these issues in a quantitative manner based on real life data. Manufacturing industry, for example, has successfully leveraged these technologies (ERP, PLM, MES, APC, etc.) to enhance productivity and quality. In this presentation, I would like to illustrate the benefits that could be derived by implementing ICT-leveraged solutions available today for the mining industries. I will focus on the following recent technological developments in the context of their applications in the mining and minerals industries: Mobility technologies: The industry is looking for strategically sustainable solutions that fit the working profile of mining engineers and which provide up-to-date information in real time. Mobile applications for iPhones and iPads are gaining popularity, which is helping mining engineers to work on-line as well as off-line. Mobility technologies have made it possible to provide data anywhere and anytime in a form you prescribe. This enables proactive responses to changing dynamics of the marketplace. For example, a plant engineer can access information about any critical process equipment, monitor its performance and do the needful as and when needed. Similarly, scheduling of operations can be optimized based on the market demand and on the availability of raw materials, labor, and status of equipment.

"Among the many variables mentioned in the literature that may influence the froth flotation performance, particle size is perhaps one of the most renowned. Empirical knowledge has indicated that recovery of fine particles will inevitably drop below certain particle size threshold. Several processing alternatives have been suggested to improve the recovery of fine particles. Some of these initiatives have been reached the status of patents and other intellectual property related documents; however, there is still a disconnection between the scientific knowledge available and the industrial operations practicalities implemented to address this matter. In fact, in general terms, none of these ideas or processes concepts have become a final solution to this problem. At first glance, economical reasons may be argued as the main cause hindering the development of these and other ideas, but it would be an oversimplification as technical issues behind them are still themes to be discussed and sorted out. This study aims to review technical aspects behind scientific ideas and processes concepts suggested to solve the problem of low beneficiation of fine particles in froth flotation. The analysis was performed using the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ) which allows identifying technical gaps these initiatives have not considered or overlooked. Statistically the scientific databases indicates that reports on fine particles froth flotation only represented less than 50% of all reports involving fine particles processing. Most of the solutions derived from classic contradictions derived from bubbles and particles hydrodynamics only (reducing the bubble size or increasing the turbulence would increase the rate of bubble-particle aggregates formation but may reduce the recovery). This contradiction encompasses a small range of contradictions possible to be accounted and to be resolved. The method is expected to provide insights towards designing definitive solutions for the industry in this field."

In global mining sector, when people mention "China Factor", usually they refer to China’s huge demands for mineral commodities, which had been driving the world mining industry into late "Super Circle". Few people pay attention to Chinese research capabilities and resources, which actually grows with Chinese economics in last three decades in such a soaring speed that you can simply feel it by the number of papers and attendees in recent IMPCs. In China, currently there are 33 universities and colleges where mineral processing discipline is established, and more than 20 research institutes dedicated in mineral processing area, with the largest number of students, teachers and researchers in the world. Due to the characteristics of Chinese mineral resources, Chinese researchers have made tremendous efforts on R&D of the process and reagents for those low grade, fine dissemination, and complex minerals resources, such as low grade hematite, diaspore, complex poly-metallic sulphides, as well as those minerals rich in China, including scheelite, cassiterite, and rare earth etc. with a special emphasis on the comprehensive utilization. Those research achievements not only successfully commercialized in China, but also have great potential for international cooperation. With continuation of globalization , Chinese government has been encouraging the international R&D cooperation in various areas at all levels, and the funding mechanism is well established with more 400 projects were sponsored in last year,in which,however, the mineral processing related projects are very few. Considering the fact that a large number of Chinese companies or Chinese capitals investing in the mining sector worldwide, more opportunities for international cooperation in this filed wouldbe emerging and increasing, while the factors like complementary, IP, government policy, system and culture difference still need to be addressed properly.

The lack of fresh water sources, particularly in the Northern part of Chile, has driven the mine sites to search for new and sustainable paths to obtain water resources to run minerals processing operations. Among them, the use of seawater in concentrators appears as an interesting solution to this problem. However, the presence of seawater will have an impact onto the operation, not only because it will enhance corrosion reactions in the equipment installed in a plant, but also because it may affect how particles will effectively be processed across the numerous unit operations existing in the mine site. Among such unit operations, the grinding stage is a highly regarded as it defines the success of the separation of valuable minerals from gangue material in the froth flotation operation. Then, one important aspect to be addressed is to understand how the presence of seawater will affect the different mechanisms acting during the operation of a ball mill. The aim of this research work is to assess the effect of changing the aqueous matrix from process water to seawater in ball mills onto the mill performance. The methodology considered the use of Fluent® software and its capabilities to run numerical simulations with heterogeneous media. On one hand, from the data analysis, it is possible to infer that breakability mechanisms should not be significantly affected. On the other hand, the high ionic strength of the matrix should impact importantly particle transport mechanisms within the mill. Particularly, when transporting finer particles. Rheology results were in agreement with previous published research studies suggesting the suspensions to behave as Newtonian, Dilatant o Pseudo-plastic fluid depending on the amount of fine particles present in the grinding media. The latter will result in changes in the residence time of particles in the mill producing overgrinding or an excess in the circulating loads.

"The effect of ultrasonication on reactions at solid/liquid interfaces was investigated by using an ultrasonic probe in two slurry systems, i.e. cyanidation of a refractory sulphide ore and geopolymerisation of metakaolinite. The surfactant dithiophosphate was used to render the gold bearing sulphide particles hydrophobic, in an attempt to induce the formation of cavitation bubbles directly at the desired surfaces. Oxygen was injected into the cyanidation system to improve the attachment of oxygen bubbles to the hydrophobic sulphide surfaces. Geopolymerisation occurs in highly alkaline solution with waste aluminosilicate oxides and silicates as the reactants. The process of geopolymerisation is believed to involve dissolution of Al-Si oxides from solid particles, diffusion of dissolved Al-Si complex from the solid surface into the gel phase, condensation of gel phase and hardening of the gel phase. It has never been investigated how ultrasonication affects the above steps in synthesising geopolymers, despite a number of papers dealing with sonochemical synthesis of materials. The introduction of power ultrasound into such slurry systems is expected to result in advanced geopolymer materials.In the cyanidation of the pyrite concentrate, the kinetics of gold extraction were significantly enhanced in the presence of ultrasound, due to the prevention of passivation and the enhanced dissolution of sulphides. Cyanide consumption was significantly reduced with ultrasonication, owing to the oxidation of soluble sulphides to sulphate, minimising the cyanide consumption by sulphides. With oxygen injection, ultrasound significantly enhanced the leaching of gold from the pyrite concentrate, as oxygen could enhance the formation of the oxidation radicals by ultrasonic cavitation. In the presence of dithiophosphate, ultrasound further improved gold leaching in the oxygen-aerated system. Dithiophosphate could selectively adsorb at gold host sulphide surfaces, and make the surfaces hydrophobic. As a result, the ultrasonication effectiveness could be enhanced through forming cavitation bubbles directly at the interfaces."

"INTRODUCTIONMetals losses amount up to 50% in coarse fractions in (>100 µm) and composite particles, and to 20- 25% in fine fractions (<10 µm) at non-ferrous floatation concentrating plants of the CIS. Therefore, reduction of metals losses in difficult fractions is of high significance.IMPROVEMENT OF FLOATABILITY OF COARSE AND COMPOSITE PARTICLESReagent regimes with application of strong collectors – xanthates ?5-?8, combination of butyl xanthates and aerofloats ?10-?12, butyl xanthates with hydrocarbons are proposed for this purpose. Application of such reagent regimes for copper and copper-molybdenum ores permitted to increase copper and molybdenum recovery by 0.5-3.9%.Studies, performed by means of specially designed non-frothing flotation machine with independently controlled agitation intensity and narrow size-ranges of air bubbles, established that the best results are achieved with employment of bubbles of 0.5-0.8 mm size regarding particles of any size, with small amounts of up to 2 mm size “transport” bubbles to be expediently used for floatation of coarse particles.Energy dissipation in the main volume of floatation cells must be lower than 0.2-0.25 m2/s3.Performed experiments permitted to formulate requirements to development of machine for floatation of coarse and composite particles. Such floatation machine with volume of 8.5 m3 provided for weak agitation in the main volume of floatation cell and uniform distribution of coarse particles throughout the depth owing to establishing of pulp circulation with upward flows. In addition, in the upper part of floatation cell where agitation is considerably weaker, favorable conditions are created for attachment of particles to bubbles. Testing of this floatation machine demonstrated a 7.5% increase in recovery of +0.2 mm particles in pyrite floatation and a 12-14% increase in recovery of +0.2 mm particles in apatite floatation as compared with a reference floatation machine."

"Gold solubilised during cyanidation can be recovered by precipitation (Merrill-Crow process) or by adsorption onto activated carbon, these being the techniques applied in industrial plants.Precious metals (Au, Ag) adsorbed onto activated carbon are extracted during a subsequent stage in aqueous phase, by various technologies, such as hot elution (70-80°C) or under pression desorption (100-130°), with hydro-alcoholic solutions.This stage is of great interest from an economic point of view, due to the high energy costs. Temperature represents the critical kinetic factor.The aim of this paper was to study the influence of different water/organic solvent mixtures (isopropyl alcohol, ethanol and ethylene glycol) on the desorption process.The experimental work was carried out on laboratory scale, using activated coconut carbon with different temperatures and extraction times, without adding cyanide.Best results have been obtained in this order: isopropyl alcohol > ethylene glycol > ethanol. Starting from gold concentration of about 5 g Au per kg of carbon, best kinetics resulted in 97-100% of gold extraction, after 8 hours of desorption, at a temperature of 80ºC."

"Impact crushers are widely used in different industries to crush materials which can vary from soft to hard and from ductile to brittle. However, the sizing of impact crushers is still based rather on empirical than on scientific approaches. Therefore, a test rotor was developed in order to investigate the principles of comminution by impact. Rocks of diabase with different diameters were used to gain the crushing properties with the following results:RESISTANCE AGAINST CRUSHINGLikelihood of BreakageThe likelihood of breakage is a function of the impact velocity and the particle diameter. The likelihood increases with higher velocities and larger diameters. Maximum Crushing ForceThe crushing force is related to the area of projection of the rock. The smaller the particles and the higher the velocities the larger are the maximum related contact forces.Contact TimeThe contact time increases with the rock diameter whereas the influence of the impact velocity is neglectable.Mass Specific Crushing WorkThe mass specific crushing work decreases with the particle diameter and increases with the impact velocity."

The significant capital and operating expenditure of size reduction operations have maintained comminution on the spotlight of mineral processing research during the last century and, more recently, the concerns about the impact of these operations on the sustainability of the minerals industry, will remain to do so in the 21st century. One of the most popular approaches that have been used to deal with these challenges is the application of simulation both to reduce the uncertainty in the design and improve the operation of size reduction operations. From the initially purely empirical approaches, including the energy size reduction ?laws? and the phenomenological approaches, of which the traditional population balance model is, arguably, the best example, comminution modeling now reached a point in which more fundamental and mechanistic models are sought. The paper analyzes some of the advances that now make multiscale modeling of comminution processes realizable. On the microscale, greater understanding of the phenomena involved in fracture and fragmentation of single particles under different stressing conditions now exists. Particle breakage testing methods are currently used in a routine basis by industry and good quantitative descriptions of different breakage mechanisms are now available, although research is still required to develop appropriate models for a couple of them. On the macroscale phenomena, the discrete element method (DEM) has been successfully used not only to provide insights but also quantitative information on the transfer of mechanical energy from the machine to the grinding media in mills and to particles in crushers, while smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to describe fluid flow. The paper also analyzes the importance of modeling mesoscale phenomena in size reduction, which is the interaction of particles forming assemblies or beds of particles, demonstrating some of the areas requiring further attention. Examples of application of the multiscale modeling approach to the inadvertent comminution of ore lumps during handling, to the comminution in vertical impact crushers and tumbling mills are demonstrated. "The aim of this work is to seek the inhibitors of the meteoric and bacterial dissolution of sulphides and gangue minerals to stop the undesirable chemical reactions during conservation of the flotation wastes. The approach of passivation of surfaces by chemical treatment of the solid phase is applied for this objective.The samples taken from different depths of an old French waste dump revealed the capacity of the flotation tailings to produce acid waters (pH 1.8-2.4) and to release heavy metals. Mineralogical studies show not only the product of sulphide oxidation, i.e. sulphates, but also the complex transformations of aluminosilicates in acidic liquid phase. The detection by XRD of aluminium hydroxides (gibbsite, boehmite) allows supposing the recrystallisation phenomena during tailings conservation.Comparative tests of the passivation of the surface of sulphide minerals and waste of flotation with using of conventional reagents (CaO, NaOH, phosphates) and original reagents for this purpose (alkyl dithiocarbamates) allow to identify the optimal treatment conditions and the efficient chemicals.Leach tests were carried out in percolation columns during 68 weeks. The normalised leaching tests according to French legislation were run to confirm the selected treatment conditions. The results obtained show that a single treatment with carbamate inhibits the oxidation of the pyrite and the other sulphides, and totally prevents the formation of acid waters (the stabilised pH was 5.3-5.8). Treatment of in situ drainage water allows to obtaining a total precipitation of heavy metals: the residual concentrations of Fe, Cu and Zn are lower than 0,1 mg/l.The passivation of sulphides is the result of the formation with carbamate (studied by IR spectroscopy and XPS) of organometallic compounds, which are stable in acid medium. The presence of thiuramdisulphide (product of alkylcarbamate oxidation) at the mineral surface stabilises the mixed adsorption layer and leads to a considerable reduction in the hydratation rate of surface by avoiding the corrosion of the pyrite. No aluminium was detected in leach solution with this treatment."

"This paper presents the results of pilot scale column flotation applications in the two different copper concentrators in Turkey. The Kure Copper Plant is located in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. There are four types of copper ore formations in the Küre region. The so called disseminated ore contains 60-70% siliceous minerals of which Cu content is around 0.5%. The remaining three ore types in the region are generally named “massive ores”. The massive ores may assay up to 15% Cu and the major gangue mineral is pyrite associated with relatively little amount of silica. The main copper mineral in all formations is chalcopyrite that is generally finely disseminated in pyrite therefore satisfactory liberation requires ultrafine grinding especially in the case of the massive ores.A blend of these ores, containing 1.7% Cu on average, is fed to the Küre Copper Concentrator whose capacity is 1.2 million tons of ore annually. Unfortunately, today the plant operates below its designed capacity treating around 550,000 tons of ore per year. The design of Küre Copper Plant was undertaken by the Outokumpu Company of Finland. The operation of the plant is almost automatically controlled and the feed, the concentrate and the tailings are assayed for copper by on-line XRF analysers. The particle size analysers are also connected to the grinding circuit. The feed material is ground almost below 50 µm and the flotation is conducted around pH 11.2 using Hostaflot X-231 (a trade mark of Hoechst) as the collector. Apart from the rougher cells, there are four cleaning stages after which the final concentrate is produced. A very fine grinding requirement for an adequate level of liberation makes successful flotation difficult and consequently the final concentrate can hardly assay above 16% Cu leading to copper losses around 20% in the tailings that contains 0.3% copper."

Some historical sketches of the early development of froth flotation are presented. Flotation technology involves several aspects: chemical control of mineral hydrophobicity, selectivity in flotation, flotation kinetics, flotation machines, and process optimization and control. However, only some aspects of the regulation of mineral flotability by the addition of chemical collectors in some selected cases are discussed. The early contributions to flotation science by Langmuir, Gaudin, Wark, and Taggart are briefly outlined. With a firmer understanding of surface chemistry, electrochemistry, and the electrical double layer, progress has been made in understanding the fundamentals of flotation chemistry, although sound theoretical underpinnings still are needed in these very complex systems. Flotation chemistry is related very directly to the type of mineral being floated since the systems depend strongly on the chemical and physical characteristics of the minerals. Full discussion of chemical reagent phenomena would be in terms of the behavior of naturally flotable minerals, sulfides, oxides, silicates and alumino-silicates, and salt-type minerals. At this time, citing a few cases involving salt-type minerals and oxides, the dependence of their flotation surface chemistry will be discussed in terms of the role of adsorption, surface reaction, and the hydrophobic effect.

Pyrite is one of sulfide minerals most widely distributed in the earth. During the flotating separation of metal sulfide and the floating desulfation of coal, it is often requaired to restrain pyrite. However, the result is not very satisfactory because of the little difference of floatability of minerals to be separated. The problem is extremely outstanding for the floating desulfation of coal. Researchers carried out a number of experiments with T. ferrooxidans (Yang et al, 2001; Zhou et al, 2000; Zhou et al, 2001; Wei et al, 2001) for an enhanced restraint to pyrite. The results showed that the T. ferrooxidans after being cultured works the best in restraining pyrite. After 10 min pretreatment, the removal rate of pyrite from coal is up to 80%~90%. The research results by Yuan Xin et al (Yuan et al, 2000) show that T. ferrooxidans can restrain effectively the floatability of pyrite and can reduce the recovery of pyrite from 95% to 8%. Though the restraining properties of T. ferrooxidans to pyrite have been proved by many tests and experiments, there are very limited reports on its restraining mechanism. Thus, a systematic experimental research is carried out in this paper.

While sustainability itself needs to be redefined in a selfless way, methods of measuring and optimizing it also need to be reformulated. Gone are the days when we had the luxury of abundant resources and the freedom to extract values in self-centered ways. In the past, focus has been mostly on reagent performance, processing operations, and upgrading of tools to maximize rather than optimize value extraction from the earth&apos;s crust. Today we as extractors face a new set of challenges that include value separation from low quality resources including wastes, but within the energy, environment, and societal constraints. Development of such technology depends on understanding the role of entities and concepts such as bio-molecular interactions at surfaces, forces involved in inter-granular versus intra-granular fracture in new fragmentation methods, robotic in-situ or extraterrestrial mining, exploiting new membrane and nano technology, use of new sensors and actuators for detection and separation and computation capabilities for faster and economical processing. Equally importantly, we need to communicate with everyone what we foresee and anticipate when we extrapolate the type-performance-cost relationship of ores to the era ahead of us and establish viable schemes for ecological survival.
