"Flotation of metal-organic precipitate in column is sensible to the hydrodynamic conditions determined by the diameter and dispersion of rising bubbles. Thus, the dissipation energy in the system resulting of ratio between superficial fluid velocities (gas and feed) in the column is main parameter for precipitate flotation in pilot or industrial scales. The knowledge of aggregate structure can lead to better understanding and control of many solid-liquid separation processes (sedimentation, filtration, thickening and flotation). Many authors highlight the importance of structural properties (i.e. floc density) for different industrial applications.This approach was applied to achieve the flotation of molybdenum precipitate obtained with organic collector a- benzoin oxime for molar ratio 1:2. Flotation tests were carried out at lab and pilot scale with rigorous control of the size distribution of bubbles and the values of dissipation energy in the systems.Structural evolution of Mo precipitate and the destruction phenomenon were described by using of the various fractal dimensions, which were deduced from experimental data of laser sizer devices and optic microscopy pictures of precipitate. The boundary fractal dimensions Df of large aggregates allows the detection of a structural scaled organisation of the precipitate flocs (elementary germs-microflocs-flocs). The fractal dimension of the particle mass distribution Dm=1.94+/-0.15 suggests, for the floc structure, a cluster-cluster aggregation process either with structuration or breakage phases.The destruction process characterised by a fractal dimension Dg controls the final size distribution. The floc destruction occurs for the lowest values of the dissipation energy (0.02 – 0.05 W/kg). The relation between Dg and the system dissipation energy Et (for various energy E dissipated in the agitation cell) involves the different breakage mechanisms of aggregates in function of the aggregation bonds (Fig. 1).Besides, the destruction of floc produces very fine particles (elementary germs or/and microfloc according to E), and thus induces the difficulties of bubble-particle attachment during the precipitate flotation in column. Yet, very small bubbles, which increase the collision probability, would make the flotation feed rate decrease. The optima ratio between superficial gas and feed velocities are determined for bubble size and flotation results control at pilot scale. Thus, it is possible to providing the catastrophically changes of precipitate column flotation by using the following established experimental relation: the mean diameter d of the flocs under the action of dissipated energy Et follows a power like law (d~Et -0.5). This allows estimating the size distribution of flocs for the E values which can appear in column."

"INTRODUCTIONGoods and products, such as passenger vehicles, are manufactured by using a wide spectrum of different raw materials to meet highest consumer requirements during use. Due to the time-varying composition and complexity of multi-component products such as cars, recycling is complicated. It involves a network of interconnected processes and material and energy flows. Improving the efficiency of the material cycle of the car to comply with the recycling targets as imposed by EU legislation, requires insight into all aspects influencing the closing of the material cycle (dynamics, technology, economy, legislation, etc.) and their mutual relation. In order to define the link between recycling end-of-life products, their changing composition and design a dynamic model was developed for the resource cycle of cars. The model integrates the optimisation of the material cycle with the dynamic behaviour of recycling systems."

"Under the auspices of World Federation of Engineering Organizations’ Committee on Engineering and the Environment (WFEO-CEE) and Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) Task Force on Sustainability and Mining (TFSM), and aimed at helping raise global understanding on and promote capacity building of risk management, this paper presents a framework and prototype of toolbox or knowledge warehouse for facilitating the application of risk analysis, mitigation and management techniques (RAMT) in the mining and minerals sector. The conception, design and implementation of the intended system of knowledge warehouse of risk analysis, mitigation and management techniques (KWoRAMT) are outlined. The system architecture of KWoRAMT is based on a browser/server (B/S) structured platform with web oriented interfaces and composed of data base, knowledge warehouse, searching mechanisms, and risk assessment methodologies. The knowledge sources for KWoRAMT will come from the TFSM expertise and Internet, including laws and regulations, codes of practice, standards, guidelines and best practices. The functions and outcomes of KWoRAMT consist of guided navigations with web links, categorized risk tools, annotated best practices with cases, and integrated risk approaches and solutions based on typical risk methods. Risk categories include those impacting on mine safety, mine occupational health, and mine community environment throughout the whole of mine life cycle from exploration, construction, and exploitation and processing to post-mining closure. Mining associated hazards will be identified and linked by vulnerability onto risk receptors through pathways. Risk management techniques for assessing impacts and consequences of mining induced hazards will be categorized with their pros and cons or strengths and weaknesses. Best practices and significant cases including experiences and lessons with problems, solutions, and recommendations on how solutions would be derived will be illustrated. Integrated risk approaches based upon typical methods will be developed for alternatives and actions."

"Extreme thermophiles, operating at 65 - 90°C, are finding increasing application in biohydrometallurgy. These micro-organisms have the advantage of exhibiting better oxidation kinetics in terms of reaction rate and extent of mineral solubilisation (Duarte et al., 1993; Norris and Barr, 1988; Konishi et al., 1995). These extreme thermophilic Archae, characterised by a different cell envelope structure (König and Stetter 1986, König 1988, Michel et al. 1980) perceived to provide reduced structural strength in comparison to bacterial envelopes, and customised metabolic pathwaysThe active tank bioleaching process, used for high rate leaching, is conducted in a slurry bioreactor. Here sufficient energy dissipation is required to ensure suspension of the mineral phase as well as to sustain high rates of gas liquid mass transfer. It is well known that subjection to hydrodynamic stress of sufficient magnitude may alter the physiological state of a range of micro-organisms through changed viability (ability of the microbes to grow), metabolic activity and integrity. While limited study on the influence of the solids phase on thermophilic leaching performance is reported, initial reports suggest that the thermophiles used for bio-oxidation appear to be sensitive to hydrodynamic conditions (Jordan et al 1993, Clark and Norris, 1996) and the presence of solids (Norris and Bar 1988, Le Roux and Wakerley, 1988, Escobar et al. 1993, Torres et al. 1995, Nemati and Harrison, 2000)."

"INTRODUCTIONThe objective of this work was to deport silver into a residue suitable for subsequent extraction without compromising the high base metal extraction during the pressure oxidation.RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONThe complex sulphide from the tailing pond of Cannington mine, Australia, was re-grounded and a bulk concentrate was recovered by flotation. The major economic sulphides are galena and sphalerite. The chemical analyses revealed 17.22% Fe; 4.88% Zn; 8.22% Pb; 9.49% S2- and 422 g/t Ag. The baseline cyanidation yielded 36.60% of silver at high cyanide consumption (24.17 kg/t NaCN). Pressure oxidation at 150°C (in the absence of iodide), followed by cyanidation of the residue yielded 8% silver extraction. Pressure oxidation was carried out at 110-150°C in sulphate media with additions of potassium iodide and the resulting residue was subjected to cyanidation. High recovery of silver was achieved because its incorporation into lead-hydronium jarosite during the pressure oxidation was minimised, while its deportment into the cyanide-soluble silver iodide was favoured (Figure 1). Silver recovery decreased slightly at high temperatures (140° and 150°C) because of the enhanced stability and kinetics of leadhydronium jarosite, but this could be overcome by increasing acidity and iodide concentration of the slurry."

"The solubility of wollastonite and its Hallimond flotation behavior as a function of dodecylamine concentration and pH are examined. The flotation response is characterized by adsorption and surface energy in the presence of amine. The methods of UV-Visible and FT-IR spectroscopy for adsorption and sessile-drop contact angle for surface energy estimation are employed.The results of wollastonite dissolution clearly showed its non uniform dissolution. The surfaces are depleted with calcium ions and became rich in silicon within 10 min of flotation time. Maximum flotation of wollastonite corresponds to a half monolayer coverage of amine, which is substantiated by the surface energy parameters as shown in figure 1."

"A research program on modelling cement grinding circuits has been in operation at Hacettepe University, Ankara, for four years. It has concentrated so far on tube mill and air separator grinding circuits for cement clinker, with emphasis on plant sampling surveys, including axial sampling inside the tube mills. The methodology is to use plant data to build the models and to supplement this by laboratory data where necessary, for example the determination of breakage functions. The plant data come from comprehensive sampling surveys and so far 33 surveys of clinker grinding circuits have been carried out in 9 plants. The operating conditions have been• mill sizes – 3.2 to 4.8 metres diameter and 8.5 to 15 metres long,• mill feed rates – 46 to 158 tonnes per hour,• air flow through mills – 25000 to 125000 cubic metres per hour,• cement clinker work indexes – 10.3 to 18,• separator sizes – 2. to 3.1 metres diameter,• separator feed rates – 132 to 689 tonnes per hour,• separator speeds – 12.3 to 21 metres per second.The ball mill model is Whiten’s perfect mixing model and the separator model is the Tromp curve with a fish-hook. This paper emphasises on the importance of calculating the breakage rates and the discharge functions with three case studies at five different circuits which were selected for discussion because they show how particular features of circuit operation can be included in the general models. Size distributiongraphs are used to illustrate every aspect of the discussion.In case I the special emphasis on calculating the breakage rates and discharge rates separately is given in a high pressure grinding roll-ball mill-separator circuit. The tonnes of each size fraction in the mill and the calculated values of R/D, D and R are determined. The values of R per mw are also given to allow comparison with mills of other sizes. The circuit allows the comparison of the static type (V Sep) and dynamic type separators (SKS). Comparing the reduced efficiencies shows that the dynamic separator is slightly more efficient than the static one.In case 2 data are given from two compartment tube mills having the same diameter and the motor power but different ball size gradation. The breakage rate particle size variation of the second chamber of two mills indicate that having finer ball size distribution causes higher breakage rate values."

The aim of this paper was to study the influence of different water/organic solvent mixtures (isopropyl alcohol, ethanol and ethylene glycol) on the gold desorption process. The experimental work was carried out on laboratory scale, using activated coconut carbon with different temperatures and extraction times, without adding cyanide. Best results have been obtained in this order: isopropyl alcohol > ethylene glycol > ethanol. Starting from gold concentration of about 5 g Au per kg of carbon, best kinetics resulted in 97-100% of gold extraction, after 8 hours of desorption, at a temperature of 80ºC.

"The main features of the de Wet improved alkali fusion process for the manufacture of AZST are: Fewer process are steps necessary; radioactivity is removed by leaching rather than by precipitation; fewer waste streams are generated; there is less waste to discard and alkali reagent is recovered in the form of a sodium silicate solution that is essentially free of radioactivity.Here we report on our efforts maximize the alkali recovery in the sodium silicate product stream: Milled zircon, d50 ˜ 9 µm, was fused with caustic soda pearls in open reaction vessels at temperatures between 650°C and 850°C. Fusion times of 1, 2, 4, 24 and 336 hours (with intermittent milling) were investigated. The fusion products were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and by wet chemical analysis.For prolonged fusion times the fusion products approached equilibrium compositions. However, the phases Na2ZrSiO5 and Na4Zr2Si3O12 observed at 850°C did not form at 650°C. Since these compounds do not hydrolyze in water they limit the recovery of alkali in the sodium silicate product stream. For 2-hour fusions a broad spectrum of non-equilibrium reaction-products, that are rich in sodium silicates, is formed."

The recovery of water for re-use in minerals processing is an important issue in the reduction of water use in mining, as is the dewatering of tailings to reduce the propensity of ?wet? tailings dams. It is common in these dewatering operations to use thickeners whereby polymeric flocculants are combined with the dilute feed to the thickener to aid sedimentation and the subsequent consolidation of particulate materials. Thickeners are the workhorses of water recovery and tailings dewatering and although the basics are well understood, there is still no ability to reliably predict the throughput and underflow density from a thickener based on traditional sedimentation tests and flux analysis. The reasons for the discrepancy between full-scale operations and predictions based on laboratory tests are numerous, including difficulties in mimicking the flocculation conditions experienced in the field and the shear conditions in the thickener. The latter effects are little understood and hard to quantify and include effects due to flocculated aggregate densification, complimentary shear and compressional effects and aggregate break-up. Developing a set of test protocols to quantify the effects of densification, shear in compression effects and aggregate breakup and the subsequent contributions of each to compressional dewatering in a thickening environment has been completed for a simple model polymer flocculated particulate suspension. The data and analysis shows that aggregate densification is a dominant contributor to the difference between observed and predicted behavior based on laboratory tests. A major consideration in the analysis is the fact that common thickener operations are permeability limited and although the various effects are all important, the one that results in the fastest water release is dominant. Of interest also are the shear rate, concentration, and time dependence of the aggregate densification process. A basic model of the process has been developed along with network yielding tests conducted using rheometry. "In this paper, we have studied efficiency of different chemical structures of frothers on copper ore Majdanpek. The goal was to find out the best suitable chemical structure, which allows good bubble formation, size and interaction, forces on mineral surface. The particle size distribution was between 10 and 100 µm. Our research was oriented on three groups of frothers: alcohols, poly glycol ethers and poly glycols.We also used different collectors based on similar or less similar alcohol group in chemical structure as in frothers, expecting higher stability of air bubble in contact with copper minerals. Minimal potential energy was determinate in the hydrodynamic conditions for different particle sizes. It was founded that it is proportional to air bubble volume on 0.88° and contra proportional to the kinematics viscosity of pulp.Analyzing the results, we find out that poly glycols decreased surface tension the most. Also, it increased amount of coarser particles to the top of pulp. This group is less sensitive to pH value compared to the others too.From the class of frothers with higher efficiency in flotation process, we pointed OrePrep X-75 and X-133 as frothers with expressive frothing characteristic in the alkaline and low alkaline circuits. Special suitability of those frothers for floating copper minerals makes their hetero polar molecules with more than one hydrocarbon radicals connected to one polar group. However, those froters have no nether high or low solubility and are non-ionization. Those froters indicate some small collecting characteristics too. In dispersion systems, those two frothers make two types of bubbles: smaller di < 1.2 mm; V = 0.0008 cm3 and middle di < 16 mm; V = 2.2 cm3 (di – Bubble diameter, V – Bubble volume). Transportation speed of air bubbles it is possible to calculate based on equation: ?s = 27.5 * di 1.4 cm/s. Distribution of free surfaces for chalcopyrite is average 80% in the class –74µm +10µm and 20% in the class -10µm. If we get all class sizes, we find that recovery (R) depends from the time by equation:"

"Froth flotation has a long history of success for the recovery and concentration of a wide variety of minerals of commercial interest. Both the art and science of flotation have progressed greatly, and as our knowledge has increased so has our ability to improve mineral separations and recoveries.One area of interest in recent years has been the flotation of refractory gold ores to recover the gold-bearing sulfides. In many instances, the use of conventional air flotation to concentrate these values has achieved only limited success. However, as a result of intensive research, Newmont Mining has expanded the boundaries of flotation, and it can now be used to successfully treat many gold-bearing sulfide ores as well as platinum and palladium ores. This has been achieved through the use of the N2TEC technology, which utilizes nitrogen as an inert gas in the flotation process.Laboratory and pilot plant investigations and a commercial plant have proven its worth. Compared to air, the patented N2TEC process has increased the gold recoveries of many ores by 5 to 15 percentage points, and improvements of an even greater magnitude have been observed. This paper describes the process development for the flotation plant now being operated at Newmont’s Lone Tree Mine located in Nevada, as well as development work that was done on ores from their Twin Creeks Mine also located in Nevada."

"Column flotation (CF) is widely using equipment in mineral processing since many years. ERT technique facilitates non-invasive and nonintrusive visualization of different parameters in a column flotation. The hydrodynamic investigation of two-phase and three-phase are studied using electrical resistance tomography (ERT) coupled with pressure transducers in laboratory column flotation. Bubble size distribution, bubble rise velocity and gas and solids hold-up hydrodynamic parameters are extensively used for column flotation design and performance evaluation. The effect of superficial gas velocity, feed flow rate and slurry height in the column on mean gas holdup and its radial distribution has been analyzed for both two-phase and three phase flows. Influence of solid particles on gas hold-up and its complete elucidation of dispersion in the column are assessed. Experimental results show ERT coupled with PT is suitable as an online monitoring tool to provide useful information on the hydrodynamic parameters of the column flotation. The tomography images, which were generated using a modified sensitivity back projection algorithm, were employed to explore the parameter study in two phase flow in column flotation.Furthermore, the results also indicate that ERT is a very powerful tool for diagnosing the `inside' flow behaviour of gas-liquid two-phase and gas–liquid–solid three-phase flow in columns operating for a wide range of flow regimes.INTRODUCTIONColumn flotation is being widely used in mineral processing industries in last few decades. There has been a lot of attention in understanding the various mechanisms that take place during operation. Due to many reasons column flotation has been found to yield better performance than conventional flotation cells, particularly with fine particles (Honaker and Mohanty, 1996). Due to complex flow behavior in nature, the performance of column flotation influenced by on flow characteristics of the process, (Jena et al., 2008). "Interaction with microorganisms results in significant surface chemical changes on minerals. For example, chemolithotrophs such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans significantly alter the surface chemistry of several sulfide minerals such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. Heterotrophic bacteria such as Bacillus sp. could alter the electrokinetic properties of oxide minerals such as hematite, alumina, silica, kaolinite and calcite. Microbe-mineral interactions could thus be beneficially utilised in mineral beneficiation as different from bioleaching. Microbially induced mineral beneficiation unlike bioleaching deals with interfacial phenomena at mineral-solution-bacteria interfaces and surface chemical changes are brought about at very rapid rates amounting to a few minutes resulting in mineral separations in an aqueous medium.In this paper, the role of acidophilic chemolithotrophs such as Thiobacillus thiooxidans and neutrophilic heterotrophs such as Bacillus polymyxa in the beneficiation of sulfide and oxide minerals is illustrated. Mechanisms of bacterial attachment on various sulfide and oxide minerals are outlined with respect to the influence of bacterial interaction in bringing about mineral surface hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity. The role of bacterial cells as well as metabolic products such as bioproteins and exopolysaccharides in significantly altering the surface chemistry of sulfide minerals such as sphalerite and galena and oxides such as hematite, alumina, silica and calcite is discussed with probable mechanisms. Possibilities of generating mineralspecific bioreagents are outlined with respect to bacterial adaptation to mineral substrates."

"A mechanistic model for tumbling mills was developed during PhD studies at the JKMRC. The concept was presented at the IMPC of 2014, followed by progress in a sub-process of the model presented at the IMPC of 2016. Additionally, a number of papers on the sub-models and breakage function have been published. This paper provides a consolidated summary of the outcomes and status of the model. The overall model structure is presented along with the sub-models such as appearance functions, breakage rate functions, energy distribution, transport, and multicomponent grinding interaction model. The strengths and capabilities of the model structure as achieved to date are presented. The gaps in knowledge and sub-processes are also presented, providing a guide to the areas that require further research and development. It is proposed that the approach developed in this paper provides a structure that can accommodate future mechanistic, dynamic mill model evolution that can incorporate the latest research outcomes and provide a platform to test modelling improvements. This can assist in substantially improving the predictive mill modelling capability in the industry, the importance of which should not be underestimated for this workhorse of mineral processing.INTRODUCTION Grinding is almost the largest single energy-consuming process in the mineral processing industry, which was estimated that about 0.2% of global, and 1.3% of Australia’s electricity is consumed by comminution of gold and copper ores (Ballantyne and Powell, 2014). Although there are some relatively new grinding mills, such as stirred mills, vibrating mills and HPGRs (High-Pressure Grinding Rolls), etc., tumbling mills, as the traditional grinding facilities, are more extensively used."

"A new method of processing beryllium raw materials based on interaction of beryllium mineral with ammonium fluoride was developed. Possibility of extracting ammonium tetrafluoroberyllate from bertrandite and phenakite minerals is proved. The developed technology allows replacing the outdated sulfate technology developed by Materion Corporation. INTRODUCTION Beryllium is a strategic metal, which is produced only in three countries: the USA, China and Kazakhstan. The world production of beryllium amounts to only 300 tons per year. More than 75% of the world beryllium production is manufactured from oxide beryllium ores in the USA by Materion Corporation. In Russia there is a large-scale beryllium ore deposit «Ermakovskoye» containig over 1 million ton of ore. Concentration of beryllium in ore amounts to 1,2%. Since the mineral base of ore is calcium fluoride, the sulfate technology of Materion Corporation cannot be used. After alloying and sulphuric acid leaching the fluorine-ion found in fluorite and beryllium together evolve into the aqueous phase. At the stage of Be(OH) precipitation fluoride-ion prevents complete isolation of beryllium into the phase of hydroxide, which increases the loss of beryllium. A new ammonium-fluoride method for processing high-fluoride beryllium ores has been developed at Tomsk Polytechnic University. The ammonium-fluoride method involves fusion of ammonium fluoride (NH4HF2) with a beryllium concentrate. The concentrate containing 10% of beryllium oxide and 25% of calcium fluoride is produced by flotation from the ore of Ermakovskoe deposit. The main component of the ore concentrate is fluorite CaF2, which does not react with NH4HF2. Beryllium in this concentrate is represented by two minerals: phenakite Be2(SiO4)2 and bertrandite Be4[Si2O7](OH)2. Ammonium fluoride, unlike sulfuric acid, does not react with calcium fluoride and is not consumed for decomposing the mineral base of the concentrate. Ammonium fluoride is an accessible and environmentally safe reagent, worth up to $ 1,200 per ton. The total amount of ammonium fluoride is recycled and is used for decomposing a new batch of beryllium concentrate."

Ammonium fluoride, unlike sulfuric acid, does not react with calcium fluoride and is not consumed for decomposing the mineral base of the concentrate. Ammonium fluoride is an accessible and environmentally safe reagent, worth up to $ 1,200 per ton. The total amount of ammonium fluoride is recycled and is used for decomposing a new batch of beryllium concentrate."

The issues of double refractory gold ores pressure oxidation were considered. It was demonstrated that along with chloride autoclave preg-robbing which has been studied there are other negative external and intra-autoclave processes resulting in gold losses. It was found that an ingress of even low concentrations of NaCN, ferrum(II) and ferrum(III) cyanide complexes, as well as thiocyanate compounds into the autoclave leads to decrease of gold recovery during further cyanidation in a "carbon in leach" process (CIL). Admixtures depressing recovery of gold can get into the autoclave together with water in the result of industrial accidents or due to peculiarities of recirculation of industrial water used for feed pulp preparation or with quench-water used for process temperature maintenance. In contrast to a chloride preg-robbing which occurs only at pressure oxidation of double refractory gold ores, cyanide preg-robbing starts in the autoclave feeding tank (so-called «upper» preg-robbing). Possible causes of cyanide autoclave preg-robbing and requirements to the quality of water supplied to autoclaving were discussed.

An electro-resistive measuring technique developed by the authors was used to study the effects of superficial gas velocity and froth height on froth phase bubble sizes as a function of height above the pulp-froth interface. Flotation tests and the bubble size measurement were carried out in a laboratory mechanical flotation cell that was operated in a pseudo-steady state mode using primary rougher tailings slurry from Lonmin Platinum as feed. The values of intra-bubble impact distances (IIDs) which are the estimates for froth phase bubble sizes obtained from the measurements indicated that as superficial gas velocity was increased, the values of IIDs decreased for the two froth depths tested. Increasing froth height at fixed gas rate resulted in an increase in IID values especially close to the froth surface. Changing froth height and gas rate alters froth residence times; longer froth residence times mean more time for bubbles to coalesce hence larger values of IIDs and vice-versa.

The present investigation aims to develop and distinguish mineral specific reagents with two functional groups for use in flotation of calcium containing minerals. For this purpose, a series of dicarboxylate-based surfactants with varying length between the carboxylate groups (one, two or three methylene groups) were synthesized. As reference, a surfactant with the same alkyl chain length but with only one carboxylate group in the polar part was synthesized. The adsorption behavior of these new reagents on pure apatite and calcite mineral surfaces was studied using Hallimond tube flotation, FTIR and ? potential measurements. The relation between the adsorption behavior of a given surfactant on a specific mineral surface and its molecular structure over a range of concentration and pH values, as well as the region of maximum recovery were established. It was found that one of the reagents, with a specific distance between the carboxylate groups, was much more selective for a particular mineral surface than the other homologues synthesized. This selective adsorption of a given surfactant to a particular mineral surface relative to other mineral surfaces as evidenced in flotation studies is substantiated by ? potential and infra-red spectroscopy data.
