"Abstract - In many mining areas, potentially profitable mineral projects can be at risk because local people do not trust their governments and mining companies on many issues, including human rights. Projects will continue to be vulnerable to potential failure, delays, and higher costs. This paper suggests that geoscientists need to be aware of the global challenges they face from issues of corporate social responsibility, sustainable development, and human rights. These are not areas in which geoscience education has traditionally focused.This paper examines the types of conflict concerning human rights that are encountered by geoscientists involved in mineral exploration and development. It provides a background to human rights issues and presents a classification of the types of issue encountered. It reports on a survey of case studies that provide examples of the breadth, complexities, and consequences of such issues. The paper then concludes by outlining the development of codes and standards to improve performance, and suggests approaches for positive, practical engagement."

The need for effective and reliable joining methods grows as the use of advanced thermoplastic composites becomes widespread in aerospace industry. An experimental investigation of resistance welding of APC-2/AS4 thermoplastic composite laminates is presented. In this method, a heating element is placed between the bond-surfaces then the interface is heated by passing electrical current through the heating element. The polymer at the weld interface is melted due to resistance heating, then diffuses and consolidates under applied pressure, resulting in a weld. APC-2/AS4 prepreg, APC-2/AS4 commingled, and different grades of metal mesh heating elements were considered. A custom made resistance welding rig was designed and developed to perform lap-shear welds. The mechanical performance of the welds was quantified using single lap shear tests. The effects of different heating elements on the mechanical performance of the resistance-welded parts were investigated. Also, quality of the welds was examined under optical microscopy.

Glue, thiourea and chloride are the common reagents which are used in copper electrorefining to achieve fine-grained and smooth copper deposition. While thiourea and chloride are clearly defined chemical substances, glue is a natural product consisting of a mixture of amino acids in different constituent parts. The amino acids are continually degraded in the electrolyte by hydrolysis until they finally become completely inactive. This effect is well-known, largely constant and balanced by the continuous dosing of glue. In contrast, the behaviour of glue in the batch container is not always foreseeable. The glue can become partly or completely inactive by contamination with acid or bacteria, for instance. Usually this is not noticed, and partly or fully inactive glue is added to the electrolyte over a longish period, with the result that the copper growth is significantly impaired. Examples from operational practice show that, with the help of the CollaMat system, partly or fully inactive glue batches can be quickly detected.

In this paper, the synergism in erosion-corrosion process occurring in oil sand wastewater transportation caused by the interaction of mechanical and electrochemical factors was experimentally investigated. The erosion-corrosion tests were conducted with A1045 steel in synthetic slurries comprising tap water and silica sand. The material loss due to corrosion-enhanced erosion was assessed with the chemo-mechanical model developed by the authors recently. The results indicate that the material loss produced by corrosion-enhanced erosion at the open circuit potential can be formulated as a linear function of logarithm of corrosion current density. The wastage caused by the erosion-enhanced corrosion was analyzed based on the concept of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The material loss induced by the erosion-enhanced corrosion is approximately a linear function of overall erosion rate measured in synthetic slurries, indicating that erosion-enhanced corrosion could be reduced by adopting surface strengthening techniques to improve the resistance to the plastic deformation in surface layer.

During the last eight years, the Ventanas electrolytic refinery has been improving its results by applying a series of new operational practices, such as the reduction of electrode spacing from 115 mm to 105 mm., raising the current density to 305 A/m2, modification in the operators shifts to about 70% of the workers, reducing the pulling cycles by two hours, and the erection of a new anode preparation machine. These improvements allowed an increase in the refinery capacity from 323,000 to 382,000 metric tons of electrolytic copper per year. In the same period it has obtained certification under the ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:2004 standards. All of these developments have been achieved using conventional technology with copper starting sheets. The continuous improvement that is covered in this paper has allowed Ventanas to optimize its production, costs, and operational results. For the next years, it is planned to follow the same tendency, bringing the productivity of the plant to higher levels.

Iron ore mines of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) have to comply with strict chemical composition norms laid down for iron ore lumps supplied to its steel plants. This requires a careful planning of the overall ore excavation operation. In general terms, the problem can be stated as: Given the chemical composition of ore for all excavation sites, excavation capacity of each shovel, distance of each excavation site from the crushing plant and the number of dumpers available for transport of the ore, find out the percentage of ore to be excavated from each excavation site such that the production rate is maximized and the chemical composition norm is satisfied to the best possible extent. This paper presents an approach to solve this problem using Branch and Bound method. The specification for r.o.m. quality has been modified by incorporating a new parameter, ?Al2O3 / SiO2? ratio, which has a significant effect on the performance of iron blast furnace.

In December 1994, Polaris decided to investigate the use of cemented rockfill (CRF) to supplement the existing frozen rockfill system. Extraction plans for the remaining ore reserves required a backfill with superior stiffness proper-ties and capable of developing high early strengths. Although CRF has been used success-fully at several mining operations, there was the additional challenge of making a reliable cemented product in permafrost conditions. There was also the challenge of procuring and storing one year’s supply (13 000 tonnes) of bulk cement. By the spring of 1995, following three months of research, test work and process design, the decision was made to proceed with the procurement and construction of a 3000 tpd batch plant. An ambitious completion date of December 1995 was set. Team Manufacturing of Langley, British Columbia was awarded the contract, complete with the considerable task of having the batch plant fabricated and ready for sea lift shipment by August, 1995.

The Young's modulus of bi-phased model materials (vitreous matrix containing spherical alumina inclusions) have been determined by two complementary approaches: experimental and analytical. If the matrix and inclusions exhibit close coefficients of thermal expansion, the experimental results lie in the vicinity of the lower bound of the Hashin & Shtrikman's model. If there is a dilatometric disagreement between the components, untypical behaviors, similar to those obtained for a family of industrial refractory materials, were observed when the temperature varies.

At the Annual Meeting of this society, held in Halifax last year, a paper entitled "Closed System Breathing Apparatus" was read by I. C. Mackie, metallurgist, British Empire Steel Corporation. Coming from such an authority it was most instructive and illuminating. The purpose of the paper was to emphasize the necessity of a full supply of oxygen and the danger of oxygen shortage in the use of rescue breathing apparatus. In connection with this he pointed out: "In times of emergency, when life is at stake, rescue men cannot be restrained from using their utmost endeavor, and unless the apparatus is adequate to meet the heaviest load, the result may be fatal to the wearer. The body's demand for its oxygen requirement is absolutely imperative and must be granted at once. We can do without food for many days and without water for many hours, but we cannot do without full requirements of oxygen even for a few minutes. Furthermore, the victim of oxygen shortage gets practically no warning. He may fall helpless or unconscious before realizing that he is in a serious condition." Hence the necessity for expelling all the nitrogen from the breathing-bag and filling it with pure oxygen; also filling the lungs of the wearer with oxygen before he begins to use the breathing apparatus. This practice is general at all the collieries under the British Empire Steel Corporation.

has been no commercial production of either perlite or pumice in British Columbia. Several promising occurrences are known to exist but their development has been delayed due to difficult access and / or remote locations. The Empire Valley perlite deposit is located 120 km east of Clinton. The deposit appears to be a flat-lying volcanic flow 50 to 70 m thick that is part of an Eocene rhyolite and dacite volcanic assemblage. The Francois Lake perlite deposit occurs on the north shore of Francois Lake where perlite is part of a rhyolitic volcanic sequence. The exposure of perlite is about 13 m thick and is considered to be Eocene or Oligocene in age. The Uncha Lake perlite deposit is located about 5 km south Industrial Minerals in Canada of Uncha Lake. Perlite appears to be intercalated with porphyritic rhyolite flows that are comparable to those at Francois Lake. Showings are widespread but poorly exposed and thicknesses are unknown. The Mount Meager pumice deposit is located in the Lillooet River valley at the base of Plinth Mountain. Coarse pumice agglomerate forms a large talus slope that is undercut by the river. Unsorted, angular fragments up to 50 cm in diameter are intermixed with up to 30 per cent of sand and silt-sized particles. The exposed zone is about 200 m long and 50 m high; it is being considered as a source of lightweight aggregate.

Various types of thin-walled structures have been frequently used as energy absorbers to mitigate the adverse effects of impact and hence protect the vehicle structure under consideration when subjected to different loading conditions. Compression tubular structures that buckle in a progressive manner, can be used to advantage, providing inexpensive and versatile, but nevertheless weight and stroke efficient energy absorbers. In this paper quasi-static nonlinear finite element simulations are performed to study the effects of number of corners of the cross-section, wall thickness, plastic hardening rate of material, foam-filler and load angle on deformation mode and mean crushing force of tube. Crush strength increases as the number of corners of the cross-section increases, though it almost saturates for the number of corners beyond 11. Higher plastic hardening rate stabilizes the collapse pattern. Foam-filled tubes seem to have higher critical load angles in oblique loading and display a more stable and gradual decrease in mean load over the transition region. Substantial decrease in the initial peak load and dynamic load at any a given deflection was observed as the load angle increases. The investigation of bitubal arrangements and Multi-cell tubes reveals that these may be preferable to monotubal specimens due to the presence of the inner profiles. In addition, a comparison is conducted between the numerical and experimental results of the mean forces of some special angle elements. Good agreement is obtained.

As the building has recently become bigger, higher, and freeform, a technology called BIM(Building Information Modeling), which is a key technology that integrates construction and IT(Information Technology), has been rapidly introduced and expanded. Because BIM technology offers various benefits, countries that introduced BIM early has been actively promoted. However, misperceptions of BIM are prevalent in countries such as South Korea that have adopted it relatively late, with lack of awareness of its fundamental purposes. Under these circumstances, transparent and quantitative performance assessment needs to be executed in order to eliminate the misperceptions, and to explain and revitalize the BIM introduction. These quantitative performance measure KPI (Key Performance Indicators) to be measured should be prioritized. As derive performance indicators in terms of the four types (financial, customer, internal processes, learning and growth), and performance management systems, Uses the BSC to seek a balance between short-term financial goals, values and the value of long-term goals. Uses the BSC(Balanced Scorecards) to derive performance indicators in terms of the four types (financial, customer, internal processes, learning and growth), and performance management systems, seeking a balance between the value of short-term financial objectives and the value of long-term objectives. Through this, the KPI (Key Performance Indicators) which is used for measuring the effect of the BIM will be generated and also the method that can determine whether the generated KPI figures are objectively inter-connected will be suggested as well.

It?s a pleasure to be with you in Vancouver today to reinforce the good work you and your companies do to develop and operationalize new technology as a lever to improve operational performance and reduce our impact on the environment in absolute terms. Although I will use the work we do at Shell to reinforce this perspective, the principles apply to all of us in this industry regardless of whether you are a producer or supplier. I?d like to help demystify the future of Canada?s oil sands based on Shell?s view of global energy developments, including forecasted demand. One of the incontrovertible truths of this era of global energy defines change as an unchangeable law of progress. Another tells us that the art of progress is to preserve order amid change and to preserve change amid order. These axioms help frame the increasingly public debate about the future of Canada?s oil sands. I hope to illustrate how Shell?s commitment and investments create positive progress that embraces change amid order in the oil sands. I?m going to spend a little time today to focus the spotlight on the future of the oil sands to help demystify Canada?s hydrocarbon energy future. To do that, I?ll identify the features of our future energy security, including three hard truths about global energy that drive Shell?s business imperatives. Then, it?s instructive to examine Canadians? current consciousness about oil sands sustainability.

"NOT TOO LONG AGO, the CIM Education Committee saw the need for an information campaign to promote interest in mineral industry careers among young people. Today, times have changed and the Committee has now placed emphasis on the definition and function of the mining engineer. This situation, we believe, is entirely normal and the change of emphasis is not due to a change in the needs of the industry but more to a diversification of these needs. In years past, the Canadian mineral industry, although a very important part of our economy, was looked upon as a specialized craft and, because of the richness of our resources, did not suffer too much from competition. Now, times have changed and we are increasingly at the mercy of the competition and damaging inroads of price fluctuations, etc. We will therefore answer the questions raised in this discussion in the light of the role played in the past and the role to be played in the future by the Canadian mining engineer. We will begin with the following premises : (a) If mining engineers are to be involved in the massive problems of society, their traditional background is not sufficient. (b) Councils for professional development are working on criteria for the accreditation of advanced degree programs in the United States as well as in Canada, and, simultaneously, three-year technology programs are being developed along with professional engineering degree programs. (c) The difference between European and American industries regarding philosophy of life is that in Europe they appreciate wisdom more than HPs while in America the HP seems to be more important. The Engineering Digest of February 1972 reported that in the United States, during June and July of 1971, the second highest rate of unemployment was for the 55 to 64 age group ( 4.1 per cent). "The Quesabe Mine, owned by Brunston Mines Limited, is a gold deposit in the south central part of Duprat Township, northwestern Quebec, about 10 miles northwest of Noranda.It is one of the few gold mines in Canada developed since World War II. The occurrence of gold in the Quesabe fault structure has been known for many years, but serious exploration did not begin until 1945. By 1949, 15,000 feet of diamond drilling had been completed and a shaft sunk to a depth of 635 feet, with lateral development on the 450 and 600 foot levels. In 1949 and 1950 a new shaft was sunk to 1,050 feet, new levels were established at 800 and 1,000 feet, and ore was mined and shipped to the Noranda smelter. After November 1950 the ore mined was treated in the company's own mill. The grade of ore was marginal under existing economic conditions, and production was suspended in April 1952. The mine produced about 100,000 tons of ore with an average grade of approximately 0.25 ounces of gold per ton.GeologyThe bedrock formations are all Precambrian, and the general geology of the area has been described by W. G. Robinson (1). The rocks in the vicinity of the mine are acidic and basic volcanics of the Keewatin series (andesite, rhyolite, agglomerates, tuffs) invaded by the Flavrian Lake granite stock, and by dykes and irregular masses of intrusive felsite, quartz porphyry, syenite-porphyry, diorite, and lamprophyre.The mine workings are in andesite and felsite, about 2,500 feet west of the western margin of the Flavrian Lake stock.The principal structural feature of the area, from an economic point of view, is the Quesabe fault. This steeply-dipping fault cuts all the rock formations of the area, and has been traced for about 11 miles along a strike of north 65 degrees east from Lake Arnoux in the northeast corner of Dasserat Township to Duprat Lake near the east boundary of Duprat Township."

A new method to detect microstructural features such as recovery and recrystallization as well as cold rolling reduction in low carbon steels was developed based on magnetic hysteresis loop measurement. To this aim, a hysteresis loop measuring apparatus, specifically designed and assembled for plate samples was employed. It is shown that maximum field (Hmax) of hysteresis loop, measured at constant maximum flux density (Bmax) of 0.5T, is an adequatemagnetic property to monitor different stages of changing microstructures during annealing.

A leaching process for recycling small car motor scraps dismantled from End- of - Life -Vehicles (ELV) was investigated using waste pickling acid in steel work. Steel parts of mortar scraps were leached by waste pickling acid and Cu wire was recovered as pure Cu in the process. Pickling acid solution after leaching could be recycled in an ordinary process for waste pickling acid solution. High grade FeSO4 agent could be produced using H2SO4 as a pickling solution.

This paper describes the advantages/disadvantages of electron beam freeforming using two different types of filler metal: (1) brazing paste and (2) solid wire. Sound buildups were obtained from both filler metal. The freeforms produced with the brazing paste showed a certain level of porosity, which was reduced by successive melting. In comparison, the solid wire buildup was practically free of pore. When compared with the solid wire filler, the brazing paste produced narrower buildups but a larger scattering of the width.

"The Process of gas purging in molten Aluminium has been an industrial practise for many years. The melting of alloying elements and their rapid distribution in the bath is very important. To improve the mixing and homogenisation process, at RHI NON FERROUS METALS ENGENEERING GMBH a lot of CFD calculations were done. The so developed new ""purging program"" was tested at Alumino Catalan S.A., Spain. The results of the testtrials were very satisfactory and corresponds very well with the calculated data."

"The Giant claims are on the west side of Yellowknife bay about 1 ½ miles north of the settlement of Yellowknife. They were staked in 1935 by prospectors in the employ of Burwash Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, and were transferred to Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, in 1937, on the incorporation of that Company. During the period 1936 to 1940 a number of surface discoveries were investigated by trenching, test pitting, and diamond drilling. A shallow inclined shaft was sunk on the Brock zone, a system of narrow and irregular quartz veins, and some 75 tons of high-grade ore was mined and shipped to the Trail smelter. In 1943 management control was acquired by Frobisher Exploration Company, Limited. An intensive campaign of diamond drilling was commenced in January 1944 and carried on continuously for 2 years. This drilling indicated the presence of substantial gold orebodies lying within well-developed shear zones. Two shafts, 1 ¼ miles apart, were sunk during 1946 and underground development started on two of the orebodies.The claims are underlain largely by rocks of the Yellowknife greenstone belt, which extends from the shore of Great Slave lake along the west side of Yell ow knife bay and northward . The most conspicuous structural features are the steeply dipping late faults. The chief of these is the West Bay, which bisects the greenstone belt at an acute angle and crosses the southern part of the Giant group. At the 'big bend' near the west boundary of the claims there is a remarkably sudden change in the strike of the fault, from about 12° N.W. to about 3° N.E. The apparent horizontal displacement along this fault is of the order of 3 miles, with the east side moved relatively north. There are also a large number of lesser faults with apparent horizontal displacements of a few feet up to l,70J feet for the Townsite fault. Most of these faults trend north to northwest. Surface examination indicates that, at least for most of them, the movement corresponds to that along the West Bay fault, that is, the east side moved relatively north. According to the available evidence, all or most•of the movem:nt along the West Bay fault and along the lesser faults was post-ore. Late diabase dyk:s that cut through ore-bearing shear zones, with chilled margins in contact with the mineralized material, are apparently displaced to the same extent as earlier geological markers.
