Carbonaceous gold ores are particularly attractive for leaching by ammonium thiosulfate as the gold thiosulfate complex is not significantly adsorbed by the organic carbon present in the ore. A technically and economically feasible process for treating these ores with ammonium thiosulfate has been developed. In this process, gold is extracted by leaching the ore with ammonium thiosulfate, the solution is separated from the ore by counter - current decantation, the gold is recovered by precipitation with ammonium sulfide, and finally the gold containing product is upgraded by reacting the elemental sulfur present in the precipitate with ammonium sulfite. The precipitation filtrate is recycled back to the grinding step to close the solution balance. Reagent consumption is not excessive. Besides precipitating gold, the precipitation step removes most deleterious solution impurities and converts a portion of the polythionates back to thiosulfate. This paper discusses the optimization of the leaching, precipitation, and upgrading steps. The results of a 10 kg/h pilot plant campaign are also discussed.

"The ore deposit mined by Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Limited, is one of the numerous nickel-copper sulphide bodies marginal to the large oystershaped mass of differentiated norite in the Sudbury district, famous as the world's most important nickel producing field. The unique character of the ore deposits of the district has resulted in its intensive geological study over a period of more than 50 years. The results of these studies have given rise to a voluminous geological literature and to a great deal of controversy as to the genesis of the ores. This description of the structural geology at the Falconbridge mine is presented in the hope that it may form a small part of the chain of evidence leading to a reasonably satisfactory explanation of the ore genesis.The mine, named after Falconbridge township in which the deposit occurs, lies along the southeast margin of the norite mass, which, however, is h::re concealed beneath a deep mantle of glacial sands and gravels averaging over 100 feet in thickness. As a consequence, the deposit was not discovered by the early prospectors, and it was not until 1916-17 that E. J. Longyear, of Minneapolis, located the ore by drilling(ll). The discovery was foreshadowed in 1899 by the work of Thomas A. Edison, who found indications of the deposit by what is believed to have been a combination of magnetic and electrical geophysical surveys. He sank a prospect shaft over what has to date proved to be the largest and richest ore section in the mine. A wet quicksand layer at the rock surface proved impenetrable, however, and the 'Edison' shaft never reached bed-rock.The Falconbridge property was acquired by the Lindsley interests in 1928, and ore output, since its inception in 1929, has gradually risen from a modest beginning to the present 2,000 tons and more daily. Total production in this period is 7,500,000 tons of ore averaging 1.72 per cent nickel and 0.89 per cent copper, together with a small but valuable content of precious metals, principally of the platinum group."

"Gibraltar Mines Ltd. has been operating its open pit copper mine for fifteen years. In that time over 140 million tons of waste and low grade material has been placed on the mine waste dumps. Laboratory and in-situ testing indicated that enough leachable copper was recoverable from the dumps to justify a leaching operation which would include the construction of a solvent extraction-electrowinning plant. The plant, which was commissioned in October, 1984 was designed to process 3,000 usgpm of dilute copper solution to produce 5,000 tons per year of high quality cathode copper.This paper deals with the start up and initial year of operation of Gibraltar's SX-EW plant. The three areas: leaching solvent extraction and electrowinning are presented with emphasis on the innovations which were made to help overcome the problems unique to die Gibraltar operation.THE LEACHING CIRCUITThe mines waste dumps are leached to produce a pregnant copper solution as feed to the SX-EW plant. To achieve this the dumps are sprinkled with a mildly acidic solution which percolates through the dump. In travelling through the dumps the solution contacts the surfaces of the liberated copper minerals and disolves the soluble copper into the form of copper sulphate. The leaching reaction is achieved by a combination of bacterial action to oxidize the suphides and solublization of the copper into the acid solution.For the bacterial action to occur the dumps must be at or near the ideal pH of 1.9 - 2.1 and the necessary elements of the reaction must be present. Because a bacterial reaction is involved there is a lag time between the time when the conditions for bacterial growth are achieved and when the bacteria are in their active growth phase. Laboratory tests with Gibraltar ore indicated that bacterial action takes two to three months to reach its maximum rate. See figure 1.The expected lag time for the planned rate of bacterial leaching prompted Gibraltar to start irrigating the dumps in late June 1986 for a plant start up in early fall. The lag time proved to be longer than expected and the dumps took until November to start producing copper at the expected rate. See figure 2."

"The paper begins with a brief account of the naturarly occurring resources of gypsum and anhydrite and a discussion of their relative value and utility as sources of sulphur. The fundamental chemistry of recovering sul-phur values from calcium sulphate is discussed. (a) Thermal decomposition -discussed as impracticable; (b) Reduction to calcium sulphide; (i) Total Reduction-The chemistry is outlined and the Dorr-Oliver and Bureau of Mines processes mentioned. The Elcor process is mentioned and certain deductions made from available information.(ii) Partial Reduction-This is stated as the basis of the only proven process, namely ""The Cement -Sulphuric Acid Process."" The possibility of recovering lime is mentioned as an aside, but dismissed for lack of commercial application. The history of the cement -sulphuric acid process is covered briefly and a list of plants in commercial operation included. A brief elementary account of the basic chemistry of cement production is followed by a discussion on raw materials and fuels. A short account of the flow scheme of a typical plant, with notes on the operating peculiarities, precedes an account of product quality. The latest developments which enable by-product gypsum to be used as a raw material are discussed, with an indication of how the flow scheme is modified. A statement of feasible plant capacities is followed by requirements of raw materials, services, labour, etc., and finally some indication is given of capital costs."

Flotation of PGM ores, specifically UG-2, presents a number of technical challenges. These centre on the prevalence of chromite. Subject to over-grinding, chromite is primarily recovered to the flotation product through entrainment. This is of unique concern as it must be kept below a threshold for downstream smelting, with significant operational and monetary penalties being imposed should it exceed this concentration. A number of strategies have been developed to maximise PGM recovery in the presence of this unwanted contaminant. Specialised flowsheets form a vital basis and advanced control algorithms further enhance PGM recovery while minimising the recovery of chromite. "The high capital and operating cost of liquid-solid separation circuits in hydrometallurgical plants has led to an increased focus on the use of in-pulp systems for metals recovery in order to eliminate the need for solids washing and to reduce the need for liquid-solid separation.Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) has now been accepted in Canada and around the world as the leading process for recovery of gold and silver, replacing the Merrill-Crowe process and thus removing the need for CCD thickeners or belt and drum filters. The overall design of conventional CIP adsorption circuits was established in the late 1970s and it has remained substantially unchanged until now. Most of the development work since 'hen has been concentrated on improving methods of separating pulp and carbon and on reducing carbon losses during transportation and agitation.Resin-in-pulp (RIP) has been used for many years in uranium mills in the USA. However, most of the plants were built in the 1960°s and RIP was only chosen when liquid-solid separation of leach pulps proved very difficult. The plants are far from ideal as they have high resin losses and high maintenance costs. Consequently, there is room for improvement.Davy McKee has taken a fresh look at the engineering development of in-pulp contactors leading to a fundamental redesign of the adsorption units. The improved in-pulp technology uses a modification of the proven air-swept screen techno1ogy together with a new technique of process operation. The new contactor operates at high pulp throughput rates with high concentrations of carbon or resin in the recovery stages, resulting in a significant reduction in the contactor size over conventional design. As a result of this reduction in the size of the contactor by up to 80%, significant savings can be made in equipment and building costs. In addition, the plant 1s easier to operate than a conventional CIP plant."

"IntroductionMaintenance is a business, which to be successful, requires good management, systems and reporting. The prime objective of the maintenance management group, be they large or small, must be to anticipate and prevent interruptions in operations by keeping equipment in good mechanical condition. This objective should be carried out at minimum cost consistent with maximum productiveness.The objective of this chapter is to give an insight into the various aspects of maintenance management that must be considered to effectively and efficiently operate a mill complex. The degree to which the maintenance sub-systems are developed in an operating mill will be determined by the size of the mill and the needs of the operation.The criterion of the management system used is that the system serve the operation and not vice versa. The systems presented should be considered as tools and, as with all tools, they must be sharpened and replaced as the need arises or as more effective tools become available.To understand what is involved in maintenance management, it is worthwhile to consider a systems approach to analyzing management problems. This approach was developed by J.A.B. Rae while reviewing maintenance management systems for Cominco Ltd.A very simple system involving managing results and objectives is shown diagrammatically in Figure 1.The systems approach to organizational development involves four basic elements: an objective, a result, an activity and feedback. In the analysis, the activity element is broken down into individual actions that people could be held responsible for. If we introduce the action of operating into the diagram of Figure l, we arrive diagrammatically in Figure 2."

"A reconnaissance geochemical survey, using the stream sediment technique, is described. The survey covered an area of about 400 square miles, in the Seal Lake area of central Labrador, underlain by basaltic flows, diabase and metadiabase sills, and sedimentary rocks. Previous work had indicated numerous small copper occurrences within the Seal Lake group of rocks. Stream sediments were tested for the readily extractable copper content and total heavy metal content. The results of the copper survey did not yield any new data on the distribution of copper mineralization. Results of the total heavy metal survey attracted attention to a remote portion of the area (Ten Mile Lake), which had hitherto been regarded as having no economic interest. The anomalous values found, suggested that zinc mineralization should occur in this region. Geological mapping indicated that the rocks exposed belonged to the Letitia Lake Group, which is older than the Seal Lake Group exposed to the east, which contains the copper mineralization of the district.Investigation of the area lead to the discovery of: (1) uneconomic lead-zinc mineralization; (2) radioactivity extending over a considerable area. Evaluation of the radioactive rocks led to the discovery of columbium-thorium mineralization in amphibolite and in diopside-actinolite schists along a contact with intrusive alkali syenite.Thus a geochemical survey, which was planned to evaluate a copper province, resulted in the discovery of lead-zinc-columbium-thorium mineralization."

Copper mining and smelting has been carried out in Japan for over 13 centuries and in fact stretching back into antiquity. In 1889, the first electrolytic copper refinery in Japan based on Elkington’s principles was started by Furukawa Mining at Honjyo in downtown Tokyo based on the multiple or parallel system. Within two decades, a number of other copper refineries had begun operation. Interestingly, but perhaps not surprising given Japan’s long history of copper production, this first refinery in Japan commenced just ten years after the first refinery in the USA (1879), and not long after the first plants in Europe. By 1935, as a result of growth in copper demand, there were six domestic copper electro-refineries in Japan with an installed capacity of 97,800 tonnes/a, while actual production was 71,200 tonnes/a. Since about 1932, the majority of these plants were based on the more common parallel or multiple system. In 1946, just after World War II, domestic production capacity had dropped considerably to 29,000 tonnes/a, however with reconstruction, capacity and production expanded rapidly, with production reaching 81,000 tonnes/a in 1955, 187,000 tonnes/a in 1960 and 307,000 tonnes/a in 1965. The introduction of the first refinery and the early ones that followed and subsequent developments are discussed in this paper. The major technical achievements during the high growth period from 1945 to 1963 included: the use of fire- refined anodes; the introduction of newly-developed rectifiers; the introduction of lead-lined or vinyl-lined concrete cells; improvements in the electrolyte heating system; application of improved anti-corrosion materials and the introduction of heat-insulating surface coverings. In 2018, Japan’s refined copper production totaled 1,595,000 tonnes of copper, with Japan ranking third in the world after China and Chile. INTRODUCTION In 2018, Japan’s refined copper production totalled 1,595,000 tonnes of copper and Japan ranked third in the world for refined copper after China and Chile (Wood Mackenzie, 2019). There are now eight copper refineries in Japan which provide Japan’s production of refined copper. These plants are listed in Table 1 (Wood Mackenzie, 2019), also showing the production trend since 2013; in general, production over this period has been relatively steady. The Toyo plant is now the 7th largest copper refinery in the world after several large plants as rated by capacity in China, Russia and India (ICSG, 2019).

Activated carbon is proven to be able to catalyze arsenic oxidation in aqueous solution under acidic conditions. A commercially available granular coconut shell based activated carbon (AC) has been evaluated for catalysis of arsenic oxidation in this study. The rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT) has been developed to simulate and predict the performance of a carbon-based arsenic treatment system in a pilot scale reactor. Effects of residence time, aeration rate, and initial arsenic concentration in the influent solution on the AC catalysis of arsenic oxidation under dynamic and continuous conditions were studied by manipulating these parameters during RSSCTs. The effectiveness of the AC on arsenic oxidation was examined over the course of constant diffusivity based RSSCT operation. Residence time and initial arsenite concentration are proven to be the most effective impacting parameters on the arsenic oxidation process. For the 218 min residence time, the highest steady-state arsenic oxidation efficiency achieved was 98% with 1 g/L As(III) being treated at pH=1 under 0.05 L/min oxygen aeration. In a long-running RSSCT, the oxidation efficiency did not seem to deteriorate over a course of 666 hours operation, corresponding to 13986 mL total influent throughput volume. INTRODUCTION Arsenic is toxic to both animals and plants and inorganic arsenicals are proven carcinogens in humans. The increased extraction of low grade and complex mineral resources has introduced high ratios of arsenic into metallurgical processes. Discharge of arsenic by acid mine drainage resulting from mining activities has added intensive pressure on the need for proper treatment (Lawrence & Higgs, 1999). Since trivalent arsenite is more toxic and has lower affinity to solid surfaces for adsorption, many treatment systems initiate with an oxidation step to convert arsenite to arsenate and reach the ultimate immobilization of arsenic by the following precipitation of arsenate (Nazari, Radzinski, & Ghahreman, 2016). Scorodite precipitation has been studied extensively as a means of arsenic immobilization due to its high stability and negligible potential of releasing arsenic (Filippou & Demopoulos, 1997). As a stable ferric arsenate mineral, crystalline scorodite can contain up to 30 wt% arsenic (Paktunc, Dutrizac, & Gertsman, 2008). Arsenic must be in its pentavalent oxidation state in order for scorodite to be precipitated via oxidizing ferrous ions (Clancy, Hayes, & Raskin, 2013).

Cobalt occurs together with copper in the southern African copper belt, and a large portion of this cobalt ends up in copper smelting slags, mostly dissolved in oxide form. It is possible to achieve high recoveries of cobalt by reductive smelting of the copper slags, using some form of carbon as a reducing agent in an electric furnace. For example, a 40 MW DC arc furnace was operated at Chambishi Metals in Zambia from 2001 to 2008, and demonstrated cobalt recoveries of around 80% from slag to an iron-rich alloy containing copper and cobalt. The alloy was atomized prior to leaching. With the recent increase in demand for cobalt (and the resulting high metal prices), there has been increasing interest in this process route. There is also an alternative hydrometallurgical process for recovering the valuable metals from the slag. The choice between these process options requires a trade-off between capital and operating cost and environmental acceptability. This paper examines the potential for cobalt recovery from slags, and outlines various process options. INTRODUCTION Cobalt has had a number of important uses in society since antiquity, and its principal use has changed dramatically over time. Since at least 2250 BC, cobalt-based pigments (cobalt blue) have been widely used to colour manufactured goods such as glass and pottery. Later, cobalt became known for its magnetic and wear-resistant properties and high-strength alloys, and most of the cobalt produced was consumed in the production of cobalt-based superalloys. The greatest recent growth in cobalt demand is due to it being essential to the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used in consumer electronic devices and increasingly to drive electric vehicles. Cobalt is usually produced as a by-product of copper or nickel. The copper belt in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Zambia supplies most of the world's cobalt production. In 2018, the DRC was expected to produce 90 000 tons of the world total of 140 000 tons of cobalt (Shedd, 2019). This paper focuses on the southern African copper industry, and specifically the cobalt that is able to be produced as a co-product from this. A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOUTHERN AFRICAN COPPER SMELTING Copper deposits in South Africa have been documented since at least 1685, when the Cape governor, Simon van der Stel, ‘discovered’ the 'Copper Mountain' at Springbok. South Africa's first public commercial mining company (imaginatively called the 'South African Mining Company') was established in Cape Town in 1846, to exploit the rich copper resources that were believed to exist in Namaqualand.

Annual oil production from the Canadian Oil Sands in Northern Alberta has been rising for several decades, and more ore and overburden are excavated each year from an increasing number of open pit mines. Overburden meeting certain specifications will be used to dam tailings and fill open pits, but the remaining material must be stored in overburden storage structures (OBSS). Well-designed overburden storage structures are more stable and cost less in the short- and long-term. The purpose of this paper is to explore OBSS designs that will be stable yet economical in the short- and long-term. The geological background of the site is briefly discussed, including the effect of each of the main geologic layers (recently deposited till and muskeg, Clearwater Formation clay shales, McMurray Formation oil sands, and the Devonian limestone) on the slope stability of the OBSS. Cost is considered in the analysis when balancing between minimizing costs (steeper slopes) and acceptable factors of safety (flatter slopes), all the while considering the financial consequences of failure. Potential failure planes are identified and probabilistic analysis is conducted on the critical failure surface. The variations in the factor of safety caused by varying pore water pressure, friction angle, and cohesion, are plotted and discussed.

"Abstract-Grass roots exploration has an emphasis on good precision at low (sub-economic) concentrations of an element, in order to identify "anomalies" which may lead to drilling targets. Although it is wise to have well-defined quality controls in place during early stage sampling, the control procedures at this stage tend to be rudimentary. When a deposit warrants detailed delineation, the need for accurate geological characterization and assaying of ore-grade rock must be supported by appropriate quality control procedures.As a project returns more promising results, and the likelihood of the project warranting a prefeasibility study increases, it is time to tighten quality assurance requirements and quality control protocols. Delays in instituting adequate quality control and verification procedures may lead to costly remedial actions that can also delay completion of the prefeasibility or feasibility study. Sometimes, as a project matures, the quality control and quality assurance aspects fail to keep pace with the changing nature of the work: an increasing emphasis on precise and accurate assaying of oregrade rock.A resource model is like a house of cards. The foundation of the house is the geological observations, the sampling methods and the geological interpretations performed upon those samples. Upon the sampling, which includes all the sub-sampling steps of sample preparation, rest the assay results. The quality of the assays can be no better than the quality of the sampling. Good assaying technique will preserve all biases and imprecisions introduced during sampling and sample preparation; it cannot remove them. If the sub-samples and/or assays are bad and must be redone, all the succeeding levels of the house of cards must also be rebuilt, or at least patched up.From geological observations, a geological interpretation is built, the quality of which is critical to the construction of an acceptable resource model. Geological elements are difficult to assess, and are not discussed here; they are dependent upon the expertise of the geologists involved. Geological knowledge contributes essential quality control elements to resource/reserve determinations (Sinclair and Postolski, 1999; Postolski and Sinclair, 1999).This paper consists of five sections: (1) overview of quality control protocols, (2) maintaining quality control of databases, (3) quality control of drill sampling, (4) optimizing crushing and grinding requirements, and (5) quality control of assay data acquisition."

Recent trends of the mining project show that there will be more and more mechanized, largescale mining operations with complex process options to make low grade deposits economically feasible to develop. The global optimization of large scale, complex mine operations will become more important for the future mining. To serve the industry?s future needs, the OptiMine® software program is developed based on expertise gained at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) for more than two decades, by using the special solution methodology based on the Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) technique in the Operations Research (OR). The program has been beta-tested on more than 20 projects as a multi-time period scheduling and cutoff grade optimization tool that handles large scale open pit and underground mining operations involving complex process options, many stockpiles and dumps, blending requirements, and truck hour limitations. In each project, various operational options are evaluated in OptiMine® to develop strategic planning to help defining company?s strategies and directions. This paper demonstrates how the OptiMine® can be used to optimize a large scale, complex production scheduling problem on a case study coming from real world project. The case study describes multi-pit mine production scheduling optimization with pit backfills in such a fashion that acid generating waste rocks are encapsulated to minimize environmental impact.

This study focusses on the production of micro-structured agglomerates with high porosity from iron (III)-hydroxide-containing materials as adsorbent. A fractal-like structure of the agglomerates was created through a two-stage agglomeration process. Developing porous structures was necessary to increase the adsorption capacity. Various materials were used for the agglomeration experiments: i) filter cake (dry matter content 23 to 27 wt.-%); ii) FerroSorp®DGµ, a product which is already being used commercially for various applications in water cleaning. These materials in the pristine state have different characteristics such as dry matter content and particle size distribution. The desired optimised agglomerates can be achieved with the help of additives or binders, respectively. Additionally, the agglomeration process parameters play a vital role. In order to produce agglomerates with high porosity, the process was carried out in two steps. Firstly, FerroSorp®DGµ (d90 < 30 µm) was agglomerated jointly with the aforementioned filter cake in an Eirich intensive mixer (particle size range 125 µm < d90 < 500 µm). The second agglomeration step post drying was carried out in a pelletisation disc or in an Eirich intensive mixer with the addition of polymeric binders (up to particle sizes ranging from 2 to 4 mm). Agglomerates were characterised both in short and long term loading tests using phosphate as model ion. Contact times were less than 10 min, similar to practical application in percolation columns, or more than 7 days, respectively. The results show that the agglomerates produced in the two-stage pelletisation process have more advantageous properties like better accessibility of the active sites obtained by specificly influencing the particle size distribution during the two-stage pelletisation process.

Electrorefining of low-grade copper alloys containing various amounts of nickel, lead, antimony, bismuth, arsenic, selenium, silver, and gold in sulfamic acid media was demonstrated. The copper concentration of the alloys used as an anode was 70–90 wt%. The electrolyte contained 100 g L-1 of free sulfamic acid and 40 g L-1 of cupric ion. Galvanostatic electrolysis was conducted at 200–300 A m-2 in the electrolyte using a low-grade copper alloy anode and a stainless steel cathode at 25C. The terminal voltage was approximately 0.8 V at the start of the electrolysis, although it increased periodically to approximately 2.0 V and then shortly returned to its initial value. Nickel, lead, and arsenic from the anode dissolved in the electrolyte and were removed. Antimony, bismuth, selenium, and silver were removed as solids. Consequently, a dense copper cathode was obtained, and the concentration of copper was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometry to be 99.82–99.99 wt%. INTRODUCTION Electrorefining of copper is conventionally carried out in a sulfuric acid electrolyte using crude copper assaying at 99.5 wt% Cu as the anode (Biswas & Davenport, 1994). Elements more noble than copper do not react anodically, and consequently, they are distributed in anode slimes. Elements less noble than copper dissolve from the anode. Nickel and arsenic are stabilized as aqueous species. Lead, antimony, and bismuth react with water, sulfuric acid, or arsenic acid to form barely soluble compounds; thus, they are distributed in anode slimes. An emerging issue in the electrolytic refining of copper is an increase of impurities in crude copper used as the anode (Moats et al., 2013). This is due to an increase in the content of impurities in copper concentrates as well as an increase in the types of secondary copper feedstocks (e.g., E-Scraps, automotive shredder residues, and smelting residues) treated in the copper pyrometallurgical process. An extreme case is a copper smelter that does not use copper concentrates as feedstocks. In such a process, copper-bearing feedstocks are smelted in a top submerged lance furnace to prepare low-grade copper alloys assaying at 80– 90 wt% Cu (Sekimoto et al., 2013). Such low-grade copper is not acceptable as an anode in the conventional copper electrolytic refining process because it is easily passivated during electrolysis. Consequently, electrolytic copper is produced by leaching the atomized low-grade copper in a sulfuric acid solution with oxygen, followed by electrowinning. Flotation of a mineral bearing particle is the result of successful completion of a chain of events, such as, producing particles with sufficient exposure of the valuable mineral on the surface, reagent adsorption, suspension of the particle in the pulp, collision of particle with air bubbles and subsequent attachment, ascending to the froth column and transport to the concentrate stream, among others. These sub-processes in turn are affected by the feed properties such as size and density, and process variables such as size of air bubbles, degree of turbulence in the cell, particle/particle interactions etc.. Thus, inefficiencies occurring in any one or more of the above processes will result in inefficient flotation performance. In spite of its dependency on a wide variety of sub-processes, flotation performance is commonly modelled based on first order kinetics using two or three parameter models. As the model parameters may be affected by several of the sub-processes mentioned above, interpretation of their variations and identifying the specific causes is extremely difficult. Of the many factors that influence the flotation performance, liberation information of the particles such as the grade distribution and surface exposure are considered vitally important. In this paper, it has been demonstrated a) how a predictive liberation model may be derived and used in quantifying the liberation information of the particles produced at various grind sizes and b) how the flotation process may be modelled by explicitly incorporating the liberation information, thereby improving the accuracy of the model. Comparisons of the observed data with the proposed model and those of published liberation/flotation models have also been made.

Located North of Williams Lake British Columbia, Gibraltar Mine is the fourth largest open pit Copper mine in North America. Gibraltar commenced Copper concentrate production in 1972 with a mill throughput rate of 30,000 tons per day. A series of expansion projects, including installation of a second SAG mill with variable speed drives in 2013, has increased mill throughput to 85,000 tons per day. Over the past 24 months, Gibraltar Mine in partnership with Spartan Controls has executed several advanced process control programming projects culminating in the implementation of a Continuous Speed Controller (CSC) for the most recently installed SAG mill. This paper covers development and results for the SAG mill speed controller. INTRODUCTION In January 2016, the price of Copper fell below $2.00 USD per pound, the lowest price in 7 years. Gibraltar Mine faced a significant challenge; how to maximize profit in an environment where capital spending was not an option. An opportunity was quickly identified to improve performance through increased automation and advanced control of the grinding processes. Beginning in March 2016, Gibraltar Mine partnered with Spartan Controls to introduce Advanced Process Control (APC) to the grinding circuits. The collaboration between metallurgical and process control engineering disciplines proved to be effective for achieving gains in throughput, reliability and productivity for the mill process. The Gibraltar milling facilities include 2 grinding-flotation plants for concentration of chalcopyrite ore with throughput rates of 58,000 tons per day (Concentrator 1) and 38,000 tons per day (Concentrator 2). Each of the two concentrators has a 34’ diameter SAG mill powered by 2 GE 4800 kW synchronous electric motors. For SAG 1 (in concentrator 1), power is transmitted through 2 Eaton Airflex clutches. For SAG 2 (in concentrator 2), the motors are driven by 2 TMEIC Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). All programming is done using DeltaV, which Gibraltar uses as its Distributed Control System (DCS) and Human Machine Interface (HMI).

Nanosize model gold particles with varying size were fabricated by deposition of a 10 nm thick gold film onto SiO2/Si(100) substrate by electron beam evaporation followed by modification using low energy Ar+ ion bombardment. The change in particle size were monitored by the Au 5d valence band states determined by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). The gold/iron oxide interface was studied by iron oxide deposition on gold. It was found that the energy profile of Au 5d valence band states are strongly redistributed with decreasing the gold particle size mostly affecting at the lowest and at the highest binding energies. The size effect in the UPS spectra can be interpreted by the energy redistribution rather, than by narrowing the 5d states. The iron oxide deposition increases the catalytic activity in CO oxidation whether it is on gold nanoparticles or on a continuous 80 nm thick gold film. The activity enhancement is significantly larger in case of gold nanoparticles. The interface interaction is operative in enlargement of the catalytic activity even if gold particles are not exposed to the surface, but they are located below the iron oxide layer.

"Mineral deposits and prospects of the Pan African Saldanian orogenic belt in the southwestern Cape Province South Africa, are reviewed. Despite the entire absence of operating base or precious metal mines in the area, this study has established at least four metal associations that offer enticing exploration potential.The poly-phase deformed, low-grade metamorphosed volcano-sedimentary Malmesbury Group constitutes a complex, poorly understood supracrustal sequence that has been loosely subdivided into the Tygerberg, Swartland and Boland tectono-stratigraphic terranes by northwesterly trending fault zones. Syn- and post-tectonic granitoids of the Cape Granite Suite selectively intruded these terranes. Early S-types preferred the Tygerberg terrane whereas the later I-types dominate the remaining areas. Anorogenic A-type granites, however, occur in all three domains. Known metallization is directly or indirectly related to the intrusives, yet syngenetic deposits are conspicuously absent from the supracrustals. Four metal associations have been identified.• Cassiterite-wolframite (± Au, Cu, Mo, Fe-sulfides) in quartz and quartz/aplite veins hosted by tourmalinized and locally greissenized S-type granite. Similar exo-granitic veins occur in proximal metamorphites.• Juxtaposed disseminated, stockwork, breccia and vein style Cu-Mo-Fe-(Au)-sulfide mineralization hosted by mafic to intermediate intrusives of high K calc-alkaline, I-type affinity. • Cu-Mo-Au-sulfides hosted by hydraulic breccia pipes, stocks and veins occurring in anorogenic A-type alkali feldspar granites and amphibole quartz syenites.• Scheelite with minor Cu-Mo-sulfides and Au-associated with endo- and exo-skarns spatially related to I-type monzogranite, granite and alkali feldspar granite.The first three associations occur along the Yzerfontein-Helderberg-Zone, a 180 km lineament in the Tygerberg terrane, a zone exploited by syn-, late- and post-tectonic intrusives and their related mineralization. The fourth association is typical of the Boland terrane. The spatial and temporal relationships between the various metal associations is interpreted as the result of sequential intrusion of relative early high level S-type, followed by intermediate level I-type and finally anorogenic A-type granitoids during the evolution of a contracting continental margin arc and its irmer arc. This plate tectonic setting suggests subduction in an easterly direction underneath the Kalahari craton. The spatial configuration of the various terranes at the present erosional levels is the result of rifting and significant differential vertical displacement following cessation of subduction, a terminal tectonic event possibly synchronous with intrusion of the A-type granitoids.Near surface preserved roof zones and cupolas of both S- and I-type granitoids in the Tygerberg and Boland terranes, respectively, render these areas extremely prospective for Sn, W, Mo and Au mineralization. The presence of intermediate to mafic volcanics, a diversity of calcareous lithotypes and favorable plate tectonic setting of the Malmesbury Group suggest potential for the thus far elusive VMS, MVT and Sedex base metal and minor precious metal deposits."
