An electrowinning pilot plant has been constructed at Falconbridge Nikkelverk A/S, Kristiansand, Norway. The equipment consists of a mixing tank where the electrolyte composition and temperature are controlled, an electrowinning tank equipped with five cathodes and six anodes of commercial size and design and a dechlorination facility. Electrowinning experiments were carried out in this pilot plant using acid cobalt chloride solution from the cobalt tankhouse. Key parameters were varied to obtain an improved understanding of the cobalt electrowinning process, focusing on the detrimental deposition of cobalt oxide on dimensionally stable anodes. The extent of anode scaling was found to be dependent on the electrowinning conditions. Low pH, temperature and cobalt concentration resulted in less scale being formed, however at the expense of cobalt current efficiency and cell voltage, adversely affecting electrowinning production capacity and energy consumption. When operating at high acidity, pH in the anolyte was higher than in the catholyte, which is believed to be due to H+ ions taking part in the current transport across the diaphragm, migrating out of the bags surrounding each anode.

"The Dawn Lake uranium deposits are located 340 km north of La Ronge, Saskatchewan, in the Athabasca Basin between the Midwest Lake and Rabbit Lake deposits. Four zones of uranium mineralization, called the ""11, 14, 11A and 11B Zones,"" lie within the Athabasca Sandstone, at the sub-Athabasca unconformity and in the basement.At Dawn Lake, approximately 100 metres of Helikian Athabasca Group clastic sediments overlie Aphebian Wollaston Group pelitic and calcareous metasediments and pegmatites. Uranium with some nickel, cobalt and copper, occurs near the sheared stratigraphic contact between calc-silicate gneiss and graphitic, pyritic pelite. The mineralization lies in an area of low magnetic susceptibility which is thought to represent a rock sequence lying stratigraphically high within the Wollaston Group. There is no obvious vertical displacement of the unconformity by faulting, despite considerable brecciation, shearing and slickensides seen in the basement rocks. This suggests horizontal displacement on steeply dipping wrench faults as the main tectonic control along the 11, 11A and 11B trend.Below the Athabasca unconformity, the Wollaston Group rocks are altered to fine-grained mixtures of clays, chlorite and silica commonly called regolith. Along the mineralized trend post-Athabasca fracturing and (or) compaction have occurred through this clay-rich alteration zone, causing the steeply-dipping primary foliation to become contorted. This ""crenulated"" horizon can reach depths of 35 metres below the unconformity and is thickest along fault zones in the calc-silicate rocks. The ""crenulite"" is a distinctive unit which at Dawn Lake is commonly found above pods of ore located deep below the unconformity.Much of the mineralization in the 11A and 11B Zones occurs above, beside and below the thickest part of the crenulated zone, although the crenulated rock itself contains negligible amounts of carbonate, pyrite and uranium. Intense vuggy alteration and collapse breccias are found in calc-silicate rocks deeper and to the west of the 11A and 11B mineralization. There are at least two ages of uranium deposition in the basement zones, shown by small bright cubes of ""pitchblende /"" overgrown and replaced by duller botryoidal ""pitchblende II. ""Sooty pitchblende and yellow secondary minerals are the result of still younger reworking.The geological setting of mineralization, along the contact between carbonate-rich calc-silicate rock and pyritic pelite, suggests that the uranium was concentrated at a pH/Eh boundary located between deeply weathered, carbonate-rich and sulphide-rich basement rocks."

THE problems relating to the construction and use o{ mining equipment are basically the same as those pertaining to equipment in other industries. It is true that much mining equipment is subjected to an unusually severe combination of shock, high stresses, abrasive wear, and corrosive ? conditions, but in other industries, also, equipment must operate under similar adverse conditions, so that their experiences may readily be applied to the problems of the mining industry. Steel and iron are for obvious reasons the most suitable materials for the construction of the greater part of the equipment used in the mining industry. For a large percentage of uses, the ordinary plain carbon-steels and ordinary or unalloyed cast-iron are, and probably will continue to be for a long rime, entirely satisfactory materials. There are, however, many. conditions which cannot be satisfactorily taken care of by these materials, and alloy steels and irons must be used where the greatest possible economy is desired. In general, alloy steels and irons are used where it is necessary or economically desirable to use materials possessing properties superior to plain carbon-steel or ordinary cast-irons, such as: (a) better strength (b) better wear resistance (c) better corrosion resistance (d) better resistance to high temperatures (e) better resistance to low temperatures or combinations of two or more of these advantages. There are also conditions where materials having other special properties are required, such as, for example, certain magnetic or electrical properties for electrical machinery; but in the great majority of cases, one or more of the five advantages listed are the most desired.

"Tests were carried out on clear glass blocks containing borehole aligned with and at an angle to applied principal stress states in order to study the growth of drilling induced tensile fractures. The samples were illuminated such that photoelastic fringes could be video recorded during the measurements; this was useful in assessing states of stress and in determining fracture initiation. Axial drilling induced fractures were observed at the azimuths of the applied uniaxial stress as would be expected from the concentrated stresses. En echelon fractures were observed from the borehole deviated at 45° to the direction of the compression. These preliminary and currently qualitative results show that glass blocks serve as a useful test medium for studies of stress concentration and drilling induced fracture creation. INTRODUCTIONWith the increasing exploitation of unconventional oil/gas reservoirs using deviated drilling in recent years, the effects of the in-situ stress on the success of energy production have become more critical than ever before. Knowledge of the state of stress in the earth enables us to determine well trajectories, well locations, hydraulic fracturing design and production rates, but knowing the crustal stress is always challenging. Strictly, it can only be obtained to varying quantitative degrees by accessing the earth through drilling. Failure of the rock at the borehole wall produces borehole breakouts (e.g., Bell & Gough, 1979; Haimson & Herrick, 1986; Zoback et al., 1985) and drilling-induced tensile fractures (DITF) (e.g., Aadnoy, 1990; Aadnoy & Bell, 1998; Barton et al., 1997; Brudy & Zoback, 1999; Davatzes & Hickman, 2010; Peska & Zoback, 1995). Thus, it is important to understand the failure mechanism of the rock in the vicinity of the borehole. A number of closed-form expressions have been developed that allow the stress concentrations to be calculated in the vicinity of a borehole including Kirsch’s (1898) 2-D plane strain solution and 3D formulae for elastically isotropic (Hiramatsu and Oka, 1962) and anisotropic (Lekhnitskii, 1981; Amadei, 1983) continua. These solutions have been applied in numerous studies (e.g., Ong, 1994; Ong & Roegiers, 1996; Vahid & Ghassemi, 2011; Jia & Schmitt, 2014; Ito et al., 2001) to analyze the failure mechanisms of drilling-induced tensile fractures (DITF) on the borehole wall."

"The decrease in strength with increasing rock specimen size is usually associated to the increase in the number of defects inside the specimens at small scale (centimeters) but also to the role of the rock mass structure at the rock mass scale (meters to decimeters).This matter of concern was particularly focused when determining the size of pillars in underground mines. Some formulae regarding strength of pillars have been proposed but they usually consider only the size and shape of the pillars and the strength of the intact rock. The structure tends to be overlooked or hidden behind the scale, but it is probably very relevant. For standard tunnel design, the approach by Hoek and Brown (1997), taking the structure into account in terms of the GSI, is commonly used. However, this approach does not specifically consider the size of the tunnel. Thus, a size larger than the so-called representative elementary volume is implicitly contemplated.The authors have recently performed a lab study on the effect of the structure in the strength, deformability and post-failure characteristics of granite at lab scale (NX size) extended here. This experimental program included intact and artificially jointed rock specimens. Obtained results permit to observe the changes in strength, deformability and post-failure behavior of this “small scale rock masses”, associating the role of the structure to the observed complete stress-strain response of the specimen, which can improve our understanding of the actual complete mechanical response of rock masses."

"High deposition rate Wire and Arc Additive Manufacture (WAAM) can provide benefits to the aerospace industry, including a reduction in lead time, reduced material waste and, through higher solidification rates, refinement of the as-built microstructure relative to a cast material. However, candidate 2xxx series high strength alloys for this process normally require a solution treatment, which is problematic for large near-net-shape components, and age hardening to achieve maximum mechanical properties. With each layer being subject to multiple thermal cycles, exploiting the thermal conditions in the WAAM process to avoid post-build solution treatment is therefore of interest. A solutionisation model has been developed for the WAAM process, based on diffusion controlled dissolution using DICTRA, which was validated through thermal simulations combined with 2D and 3D image analysis. The model has subsequently been used to simulate the solutionisation behavior during a typical WAAM thermal cycle and to explore what could theoretically be achieved by, for example, refining the starting microstructure.INTRODUCTION There is currently great interest in exploiting additive manufacturing (AM) in the aerospace sector due to several benefits it can potentially provide; including reduced material waste, shorter product lead times and greater design freedom (Herzog, Seyda, Wycisk, & Emmelmann, 2016). However, with aluminium alloys the material properties obtained are generally inferior to those of conventional high-strength wrought products; therefore more research is required to explore the potential for exploiting the unique process conditions in AM to improve the as-deposited microstructure. A range of AM techniques are now available (Debroy et al., 2018), which differ in terms of the feedstock type and power source and it is necessary to match the appropriate technology to a particular application. This generally requires a compromise between the build rate and shape resolution. Wire and plasma-arc additive manufacturing involves using an electric arc to melt wire onto a substrate, and fabricates a part by building up overlapping layers of deposited weld beads (Addison et al., 2015; Williams et al., 2015). The benefits of this process over other AM methods are the much higher deposition rates (e.g. kg’s/hour) achievable and lower capital equipment costs relative to powder bed techniques, which makes it suitable for large scale applications. However, limitations include a lower part complexity, lower solidification rates and a greater need for post-process machining (Frazier, 2014)."

It is widely recognized that there are various uncertainties in the analysis of rock slope stability owing to inadequate information for site characterization and inherent variability and measurement errors in geological and corresponding parameters. Therefore, reliability-based approaches that allow the systematic and quantitative treatment of these uncertainties have become a topic of increasing interest in rock slope engineering. There has been extensive reliability analysis of rock slope stability in the literature. However, all of these analyses are based on the First-Order Reliability Method (FORM). The probability of failure of a rock slope in the First-Order Reliability Method is provided by a linear approximation of the failure function. The FORM is most commonly used because it is efficient; its accuracy, however, deteriorates when the nonlinearity of limit-state function increases. A better approximation of the failure function can establish a more accurate value of the probability of failure. The Second-Order Reliability Method (SORM) overcomes this drawback with a cost of lower efficiency in terms of the number of function calls and computation expenses. Despite considerable studies of the application of the SORM in other engineering fields, a few attempts have been made in the slope stability studies. In this study, a recently published Second-Order Reliability Method with First-Order Efficiency (SORM-FOE) is implemented on a selected rock slope in Amasya, Turkey. The SORM-FOE overcomes the low efficiency of the SORM by decreasing the number of function calls. The probability of failure of both FORM and SORM-FOE are obtained and the results are compared. It is shown that, in high value of failure probability, SORM’s do not significantly affect the analysis and design. However, in very low failure probability, the discrepancy between FORM and SORM-FOE becomes pronounced. It is also shown that, where the second order methods are required, the SORM-FOE is more efficient than the conventional curvature fitting methods in terms of computational costs.

"Water availability is one of the principal parameters in determining the feasibility of mining projects in arid and semi-arid regions. The volumetric water footprint (VWF) of a conceptual model of a copper flotation plant was found to be 2.45 kL/t Cu ore, compared with an actual measurement reported in the literature of 2.72 kL/t Cu ore. The flowsheet considered included mineral processing stages such as crushing, screening, grinding, classification, separation, flotation, thickening and filtration. The effect of a number of variables on the VWF was evaluated, including solid/liquid ratio, feed mass flowrate, ore loss, water loss, moisture content of ore, ore grade and water recycling. The use of seawater with recycling provided the most environmental and economic advantage among several scenarios evaluated. The study assumed a price of $1/kL freshwater, $4/kL for transport over a 200 km distance at 2,000 m altitude and $4/kL for water treatment. The water related cost of the desalinated seawater use scenario was A$493/t Cu concentrate, while the water related costs of fresh water and blended water scenarios were A$308/t and A$268/t Cu concentrate, respectively. The water related cost (fresh water scenario) accounted for 44% to 49% of the entire mining and processing costs that included drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, grinding and concentrating. The total overall cost was A$435/t Cu concentrate for the seawater with recycling, compared to A$451/t Cu concentrate for the fresh water with recycling case.INTRODUCTIONReducing the water footprint (WFP) by utilising alternative water sources has been a focus of mining projects due to increasing concerns about water scarcity and growing energy costs. The global mining industry can expect to experience fresh water shortages in the future, and saline or hyper-saline water may be the only available water source to process minerals in arid regions. Extensive studies on alternative water sources (e.g. seawater, desalinated seawater, blended water) and the reuse of process water have recently been conducted (Moreno, Aral, Cuevas, Monardes, Adaro, Norgate & Bruckard, 2011; Aral, Mead, Cuevas, Davey & Bruckard, 2010). Such studies provide sustainable and economic strategies for mines and concentrators in the arid or semi-arid regions of the world such as in Chile, Peru, Indonesia, and Portugal. More work, however, is needed to confirm water consumption data for different base metal flowsheets and use this data to develop water models that can lead to reduced WFPs and more sustainable water usage in the mining industry."

"In 1994 McGill and INCO (Sudbury operation) initiated transfer of technology originally developed to detect level in flotation columns to thickeners. A conductivity probe was installed in a concentrate thickener to monitor the mud-line and solids load. The probe consisted in a vertical tube with 32 equally-spaced electrode rings connected in pairs to give 31 conductivity cells. Conductivity was measured as a function of depth (so-called conductivity profile) from which the mud line and % solids could be inferred. The probe was installed in October 1994 and has been successfully detecting profiles since then. This communication includes a description of incidents and experiences during this technology transfer process including: probe installation and start-up; software modifications to accommodate operating conditions and operators' needs; calibration procedures to adjust to changes in performance as a consequence of long term use; and preliminary observations on the last stage, still in progress, signal interpretation and use to facilitate operation, particularly by providing early reaction to upstream disturbances.IntroductionThickening is one of the basic unit operations in mineral processing and hydrometallurgy used to separate suspended solid particles from a solid-liquid dispersion by gravity settling. As the dispersion enters the thickener, the solids settle and clarified water overflows the top. A thickener, which may be continuous or batch, is basically a large vertical cylindrical tank provided with devices to feed the dispersion and to remove the settled solids. The tank provides residence time for the particles to settle. The dispersion enters the thickener through the feedwell whose function is to dissipate the momentum of the feed stream and to create relatively quiescent conditions around the entering point. Rotating rake arms move the settled solids towards the discharge point located at the bottom centre of the tank.There are normally three distinct zones in a thickener: a top layer of clear water, a middle layer called a sedimenting zone in which particles are settling, and a bottom layer called a compression zone in which particles are pressed together as a consequence of the weight of accumulated particles. Proper operation of a thickener requires two simultaneous conditions: no solids in the water overflowing the top and the target solids content in the underflow pulp. To achieve these conditions is difficult because sensors for detecting the sediment line (interface between clear water and sedimenting zone) and the solids content in the compression zone are not commercially available."

"The property of Arntfield Mining Corporation, formerly Arntfield Gold Mines, Limited, covers an area of 2,110 acres and lies in Beauchastel township, western Quebec. The Francoeur mine lies to the west, and to the east are the West Wasa and Wasa Lake properties.The property was staked in September, 1923, by the late F. S. Arntfield. The early surface work was concentrated in the west part of the property along the Francoeur-Arntfield shear zone. The zone was opened by No. 1 shaft, which was sunk for an inclined depth of 250 feet. A series of silicified lenses were discovered farther east, where No. 2 shaft was later raised to the surface. A third shaft explored a shear zone about 1,900 feet to the east, where No. 3 shaft orebodies were developed.The mill was built at No. 3 shaft and production commenced in July, 1935, at 125 tons a day. This was increased to 280 tons by 1938, and later to 350 tons. The mine continued operations on this scale until April, 1942, when the exigencies of war necessitated closing. The Company was reorganized in 1944 and underground development was resumed in June, 1945. The total value of gold and silver produced to April, 1942, was $2,011, 755 from 529,987 tons of ore.ROCK TYPESThe area is underlain by highly deformed and altered Keewatin volcanics overlain by little deformed Cobalt sediments along the south boundary. The lavas in the vicinity of the mine workings are rhyolite, trachyte, andesite, and a flow breccia of intermediate composition. The fragmentals range from fine, well-bedded tuffs to coarse agglomerate in which acidic and basic horizons can be distinguished.The intrusive rocks are diorite and quartz-feldspar porphyry in the form of stock and sills, and narrow dykes of mica lamprophyre and syenite porphyry."

In the last 30 years numerous mining plants have been developed in North America but only a handful of these have required freezing the area where the shaft was sunk. The most recent mine shaft to be sunk using this technique is located on an island off the coast of Louisiana. The project required the input and skills of numerous people in several companies, including the owner, engineers and contractors. The Cote Blanche installation is one of several mines in the area which extract salt from a dome which extends under the Gulf of Mexico. The geology of this area is, however, markedly different from others in the region because there is approximately 460 ft of water logged soil above the salt dome. Because it is not possible to sink a shaft in ground that is this soft, the overburden where the shaft is located must be frozen before excavation can take place. The Cote Blanche mine is a producing facility which was built in 1958 by the Carey Salt Company. The original facility included a 14 ft diameter production shaft and a 7 ft-8 in diameter service/ventilation/escape shaft. This system was installed by The Cementation Company. In 1996 the owner decided to improve both the mine ventilation and production hoisting system by installing a third shaft. This shaft would be designed to extract 650 tons per hour from a depth of 1600 ft and provide 500,000 cfm of ventilation to the mine at a maxium design pressure of 4 in WG. These parameters resulted in a requirement for a 16 ft finished inside diameter concrete lined shaft and a headframe designed as a pressure bulkhead. Because the mine would operate from one level only, the most efficient hoisting system for the application was determined to be a ground mounted koepe running on rope guides. With these criteria fixed Cote Blanche embarked on a program which would see construction start in June 1998 with the first salt produced in February 2001 at a cost of $US18M. The major players in the design and construction were G.L. Tiley & Associates Ltd., BLM Bharti Engineering, Freezewall Inc., Phillips Mining, Geotechnical and Grouting Inc., Don Hart Consulting and Dynatec International.

"Magnetic pulse forming (MPF) is one of the extreme high-speed forming processes. A metal sheet which is accelerated by electromagnetic force is collided onto a mold and fine and sharp details of the product can be obtained. The deformation mechanism of the MPFed metal cannot be understood only by the microstructure observation of the deformed metal. The deformation behavior of the metal should be investigated also by considering the local microstructure change with strain, strain rate and temperature change during deformation. Numerical analysis is an effective method to achieve this requirement. In this study, pure Al and Cu sheets were deformed by MPF. Impact velocity of the metal sheet was calculated by using ANSYS Emag-Mechanical. Based on the obtained impact velocity, the deformation behavior of the metal sheet was reproduced, and local strain, strain rate, and temperature were analyzed by using ANSYS AUTODYN. The relationship between the local microstructure change of Al and Cu sheets and the deformation parameters was examined.INTRODUCTIONMagnetic pulse forming (MPF) is one of the high-speed forming processes using electromagnetic force. Fine and sharp details of the product can be obtained, and springback after deformation is extremely reduced in comparison to the conventional forming processes(Psyk, Risch, Kinsey, Tekkaya, & Kleiner, 2011). Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram of MPF. A metal sheet is placed over the coil in the discharge circuit. The discharge current runs through the coil, and magnetic fieldis producedaround the coil. An eddy current is inducedin the metal sheet. Interaction between magnetic field and eddy current creates electromagnetic force. The metal sheet accelerated by electromagnetic forcecollides ontothe mold. Forming is completed in a few tens of micro-seconds.MPF is suitable for metals with a high electrical conductivity like Al and Cu.The MPFed metal may have characteristic microstructure because of high strain rate deformation."

"Some key control variables of industrial processes, associated with product quality, often cannot be measured directly or frequently enough to establish adequate control. In such cases, it is possible to use available measurements to provide a prediction for these process variables and use them in a control strategy, thereby giving rise to what is now commonly called a softsensor.In some industrial grinding circuits, the on-line particle size analyzer is shared between various sampling points. Therefore, for a given location, the actual measurement is only available every 10 to 20 minutes, a delay which is unacceptable for automatic control purposes. To alleviate this problem, a softsensor based on an artificial neural network has been investigated. First, the structure of the neural network and different schemes for the training process are analyzed. Then, the performance of the neural network softsensor is compared with other inferential methods such as ARMA models and Kalman filters.IntroductionGRAHM, French acronym of the Research Group on Computer Applications in the Mineral Industry at Laval University, began in 1990 a research project on Knowledge Based Automatic Control (KBAC). This project, sponsored by a consortium of eight mining companies and the federal and provincial governments, seeked to screen advanced (knowledge-based) methods for data processing (filtering, mass balancing, etc) and automatic control (model-based) for their use in the mineral processing operations and the transfer of the project results to the sponsor companies.In parallel to more academic research work, a number of case-studies have been undertaken with the cooperation of partner companies. Among such works, a very successful one has been the design and installation of a new control strategy for one of the Kidd Creek (Falconbridge Ltd.) grinding circuits. This project was related to the evaluation of a number of control strategies and the implementation of one of them, as selected by the plant management, in the concentrator.A total of sixteen control schemes were evaluated on one of the dynamic phenomenological simulators developed at GRAHM, a trademark of this research group [ l]. The calibration of the simulator models was done based on industrial data gathered by GRAHM and Kidd Creek personnel. Then, the simulator was used to test the performance of various PID-based control schemes, designed to achieve the control objectives set by the Kidd Creek personnel. The best scheme proposed called for controlling the cyclone overflow particle size by manipulating the water addition rate to the cyclone feed box and the circulating load by manipulating the circuit ore feed. The particle size analyzer (PSI-200) available for monitoring the product size, was unfortunately shared (multiplexed) among various streams of the plant, which meant a 14 min delay between two consecutive readings for any particular stream. This induced the plant personnel to choose an alternative control strategy, one which controlled the cyclone feed density instead of the cyclone overflow particle size."

Introduction O WING to the mineral discoveries which have recently been made in the Great Bear Lake region and the possibility of the need for fuel for transportation and development, it seems.timely ro review available information regarding the oil prospects in the vicinity of Great Slave lake and Mackenzie river, where a vast area is underlain by Palreozoic and younger sediments that undoubtedly are petroliferous. Exploratory surveys were carried out in this area by the Geological Survey and others in the latter part of the 19th century, but it was not until 1920, when drilling for oil actually began, that any serious attention was paid to the oil prospects. This is readily accounted for by the remoteness of the region, the lack of quick transportation facilities, and the shore summer season. Numerous and copious oil seepages had been reported, however, from widely separated localities, and interest was stimulated by the knowledge that these occurred in Devonian strata which had given a remarkable record of sustained production of high-grade oil in the oil-fields of southwestern Ontario. . Accordingly, during the four years 1920 to 1923, inclusive, several parties sent out by the Geological Survey made as thorough an investigation of various parts of the area as seemed warranted at that time, and from these surveys most of our information regarding the details of the stratigraphy is derived. In such a large area, it is inevitable that the lithology and thickness of rocks of the same age would show wide variations, and hence it should be recognized that conditions as regards oil prospects in the vicinity of the west end of Great Slave lake are quite distinct from those that occur near Fort Norman, 400 miles farther to the northwest, and these again are in all probability quite different from those in the less well known Arctic Red River area, 250 to 300 miles still farther north.

Corrosion resistance of the lead-based anodes directly influences the purity of the final product in the zinc electrowinning process. The anodic MnO2 layer that is electrodeposited on the anodes during this process can protect the anodes against corrosion. Sand-blasted anodes generate a uniform, adherent and shiny MnO2 layer, which gradually blisters and eventually sloughs off after several weeks. In this study, we attempted to develop a new method to stabilize the MnO2 protective layer on the anodes during the electrowinning process by providing suitable nucleation sites for electrodeposition of this layer. MnO2 particles (P80=40µm) were used as seed material for this purpose. Different techniques of galvanostatic and cyclic voltammetry polarizations, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) were employed to investigate the performances of the MnO2-seeded lead anodes. The experimental results showed that growth of the MnO2 layer is influenced by the MnO2 seed particles on the anode surface. The MnO2 layers electrodeposited on the MnO2-seeded lead anodes were uniform and strongly adherent to the substrate. This layer was more stable than those formed on the PbAg anode without MnO2 seeding. This could provide the anode with a higher level of corrosion protection. Moreover, formation of undesirable MnO2 mud in the electrolyte and the rate of manganese consumption were decreased when the MnO2-seeded lead anodes were polarized. These observations could be attributed to the different properties of the electrodeposited MnO2 layer on this anode in comparison with that formed on the PbAg anode.

"The industrial processing of ores containing gold and/or platinum minerals is generally mining site specific, e.g. McQuiston and Shoemaker (1985). The variety of various mineral processing techniques employed is extensive and includes size classification, gravity concentration, amalgamation, roasting, cyanidation, chemical leaching, ion ex-change/solvent extraction and froth flotation. Because of the relatively small quantities of Au and Pt that exist in the earth’ s crust, the economical recovery of Pt and Au often requires that the Au and Pt be associated with other industrially important minerals. This association of Au and Pt with other minerals can occur in very complicated mineralogical forms. It is probably safe to say that Au and Pt mineral concentration from natural ores represents some of the most complex metallurgical challenges facing the mining industry.Froth flotation is a technique that is receiving increasing industrial attention for the treatment of finely disseminated and/or associated Au and Pt minerals. The high throughput at relatively low capital cost, the potentially high selectivity, and the existence of a well-established technology for treating more abundant associated minerals such as base metal sulfides makes froth flotation an attractive processing alternative. Broadly speaking, the industrial oriented froth flotation experience with Au and Pt minerals exists in two major categories: 1) the flotation of Au and Pt associated with pyrite (or pyrrhotite) and 2) the flotation of Au and Pt associated with primarily Cu, Zn, or Cu/Pb/Zn containing sulfide ores.In the case of the precious metal association with pyrite (or pyrrhotite), much of the published froth flotation experience comes from South Africa. Typically, such processes are done using an acid side flotation with a collector such as mercaptobenzothiazole. The approach obviously is to float pyrite and hence recover associated gold. Generally the higher the total sulfur recovery the higher the gold recovery. Similar experiences of Pt associated with pyrite are a lot less common mineralogically and hence less well documented industrially. For example, in Canada, Pt is often associated with pyrrhotite but is not really processed as a straight pyrrhotite recovery.For the situation of Au and/or Pt associated with other base metal sulfide minerals, the industrial experience base is quite varied and is well documented from both North and South American operations. The nature of most of these flotation processes is to design, operate, and optimize the installed concentrator to get the Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, etc. that is the bulk of the valuable sulfide ore and then take whatever precious metal recovery comes. Typically, such flotations are on the basic side using standard thiol collectors such as xanthates, dithiophosphates, thionocarbamates, etc. It is very common with such ores to use mixtures of collectors in order to get ""everything"". Often in such plants, there is an inherent balancing act occuring so as to operate in such a manner to reject pyrite (and pyrrhotite) in order to maintain high base metal mineral concentrate grades and yet recover sufficient precious metals such as Au and Pt minerals which often are associated with the iron sulfides being rejected. Obviously in such an environment, the smelter operation often ends up telling the concentrator what the precious metal recovery actually was in a given production period."

The rougher flotation stage is used to reject liberated gangue at a coarse size. Base and precious metals due to their high specific gravity tend to recycle in the grinding circuit and report to the flotation circuit at a finer size than the gangue from which it is being separated. Generally liberation levels of greater than 50% are achieved in roughing and thus a portion of the feed can be immediately upgraded to final concentrate. The proportion increasing as the amount of liberated mineral in the feed increases. Scalping out concentrate from the rougher can reduce the size of the subsequent regrind and cleaner circuits. Examples of alternative process design for circuits demonstrates that you don’t need large volumes to effectively recover all of the minerals – you need smart flotation. Several case studies will be presented where circuits can be significantly reduced in size by designing smarter – not larger. This paper describes case studies to test the amenability of the Jameson Cell to produce final concentrate from rougher feed. Metallurgical performance and plant design implications are discussed. Froth flotation has been used extensively for mineral concentration for over 100 years. Although the flotation cell design has changed, it has generally simply increased in capacity rather than increase in efficiency. Cell capacities of over 600 m3 are now being used in rougher flotation particularly for the lower grade ores where the amount of surface area for flotation is deemed less significant than the required volume. The plant design volume in rougher flotation comes from laboratory batch flotation tests and/or pilot plants. The volume required for the plant is calculated based on the laboratory residence time multiplied by a scale- up factor. Examples of laboratory to plant scale-up design are given in Dunne et al. (2010 part 2). The factors are usually between 2 and 3. A laboratory residence time of 10 minutes would equate to a plant design residence time of 25 minutes using a 2.5 factor. The volume of the required flotation cells can then be calculated using the design tonnage and volumetric throughput. This scale-up factor takes into account the differences in performance between batch flotation efficiency and full scale plant. The differences are likely related to inefficiencies of bubble particle contact in large cells as well as froth recovery, which is essentially complete in a batch cell. Flotation cells, such as the Jameson Cells, are smarter designs that improve bubble/particle collection, bubble/pulp separation efficiency and operate with high froth recovery rather than simply getting bigger. The Jameson Cell was designed on the principal of improving the collection efficiency of fine particles by separating the contact zone from the separation zone and having the bubbles generated by the plunging jet shearing and entraining air. This means the method of bubble generation is not impacted by the wear of mechanical equipment as it the case in other flotation devices. Jameson Cells make bubbles less than 600 micron in size under most operating conditions (Ding, 2016).

Gold-based materials have been a mainstay of the electronics and semiconductor industry since the physics was just a laboratory curiosity. Gold is the workhorse material in wire bond, flip chip and off wafer interconnections due to its corrosion resistance, ability to form metallurgical bonds by soldering or cold welding, and ease of fabrication. As the electronics and semiconductor industries grew, so did the use, of Gold in spite of the feature size reduction so elegantly demonstrated in Moore?s law. However, several revolutions in the Silicon miracle are threatening Gold?s place as the material of choice. Although cost is always an issue, the limitations are associated with the chemistry of Gold based alloys. Will Gold remain? Emerging requirements of bioelectronics, photonics and power requirements in conventional device represent new opportunities for Gold to shine. Additionally, as the world market demand for electronic, semiconducting, bio-electronic and photonic technology increases, given the right technology, Gold still can provide value proposition.

For city smelters, with limited real estate, efficient slag cleaning furnaces followed by water granulation to produce an iron silicate product is the preferred process approach. Water granulation, however, consumes large volumes of water and requires high maintenance due to abrasive slag/water slurries. Air granulation offers an alternative to water granulation, which eliminates water use and has low maintenance requirements. Although full-scale operation has not been implemented for copper slags, full-scale operation for platinum group metal (PGM) converter slag has been implemented. A review of full-scale air granulation performance for PGM converter slag is provided. Based on PGM converter slag granulation performance, parallels to copper slag granulation are drawn and full-scale operation for copper slag is modelled using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). INTRODUCTION Typical slag management practices in the copper industry include dumping, slow air cooling, and water granulation, as shown in Figure 1. Dumping is the most commonly used slag handling method for most metal production plants, but presents challenges including the requirement for a large slag pit, requirement for expensive/high-maintenance “hot” mobile equipment, risks associated with transportation of molten slag, and no value recovery from slag as a sellable by-product or from slag as a source of heat.
