"The presently increasing world-wide interest in advanced ceramic materials is generally focussed on their exploitation in both structural and functional applications. With the opportunity to engineer microstructures and thereby closely control and tailor the final properties, there are many new applications being made for these materials in both areas.The scope and some of the applications for functional ceramics are reviewed and examples of the present Canadian activity in this field are discussed.BackgroundThere has been progressively increasing international interest in the development and exploitation of ceramic materials in the last five years. The stimulus for this interest arises from several quarters, each of which are independent of the other.• There is a growing awareness of the strategic nature and vulnerability of supply of the raw materials used to produce high performance metal alloys.• The metal alloys are reaching the upper temperature limit for their performance as structural components in engines.• The dramatic increase in oil prices during the late 1970s focussed attention on the need for reduced consumption in many sectors, i.e., there is a need for more efficient engines that operate at higher temperatures - above those tolerated by the present superalloys.• A number of ceramics, especially the structural materials such as SiC, A120 3, AI20rSi02, Si3N4 and the Sialons are produced using non-strategic raw materials and they can exhibit startling performance-auto turbo-rotors are in production mad e of Si3N4 that operate up to 190000 rpm at 600°C, 150000 rpm at 900°C.• Ceramic s are generally of lower density - significant in the weight-reduction of automobiles such as the replacement of a 20-kg five-segment steel leaf spring with a single segment carbon-fibre reinforced unit of 3 kg. • Ceramics also offer major ad vantages in generating, monitoring or controlling the electromagnetic spectrum whether in bulk or thin-film devices that exploit optical, magnetic, pyroelectric, piezoelectric, electronic and I or ionic conductivity characteristics.The opportunity to combine several of these char acteristics in a single material by composition, processing and microstructural design has resulted in an advanced ceramics industry that had world-wide sales in 1980of $4.2 billion (U.S.)(I) and is predicted to grow to sales in the range $7 to $10 billion by 1990 and $16 to $24 billion by the year 2000(2). However, at present, advanced ceramics account for less than 20010 of the total ceramic market."

"Refractoriness in Carlin-type gold ores results mostly from fine locking of gold in pyrite, locking in various gangue phases, notably quartz, and a ""preg robbing"" condition attributed to organic carbon. All three conditions may occur in any given deposit, including Newmont &apos;s Carlin and Gold Quarry deposits in Nevada, where types of ref ractoriness occur locally in minor amounts.Measurements of specific gravity, water absorption and screen size distributions of gold in alteration rock types from Gold Quarry show transitional changes from siliceous cherts through decreasingly silicified and increasingly argillized siltstones.Low permeability of siliceous ores contributes to ""size dependent"" refractoriness in cyanidation test work. Colligative physical and chemical measurements demonstrate that silicified cherty ores are difficult to grind, poorly permeable, and less amenable to cyanidation. Refractoriness in pad or column leaching of coarsely crushed siliceous siltstones and cherts is shown to correlate with interrelated measurable mineralogic and physical parameters.IntroductionMetallurgical treatment of variably amenable and refractory types of gold ore may be guided by both analytical and mineralogic data on the interlocking of gold (microscopic an d sub- microscopic) in assorted gangue/sulphide phases. Most oxidized ores from the Carlin gold mine, north of Carlin, Nevada, are amenable to direct cyanidation. The permeability of most oxidized ores from Carlin coupled with the fine size of the gold < 1.5 um) yields rapid extractions and high recovery without fine grinding.Small portions of the Carlin ore body, and also the nearby Maggie Creek and Gold Quarry orebodies, are less amenable to cyanidation, and are classified as refractory. Refractory conditions may be attributed mostly to the association or interlocking of gold with pyrite and /or microcrystalline quartz or chert, and also by the adsorption of leached gold by deleterious forms of carbon, termed ""preg-robbing"" carbon. Each of these conditions are described and defined, with emphasis on a form of silica-locking, which has been referred to as "" size dependent"" refractoriness."

"Considerable gold and silver values are lost to flotation tailing from both the South ern Tail orebody and the Main Zone orebody,The underlying mineralogical assemblage of the two ore types is quite different. This paper describes the research strategy employed to determine an economical method to scavenge gold and silver from flotation tailing.Much of the unrecovered gold in the Southern Tail ore is associated with arsenopyrite while silver losses are probably as unliberated tetrahedrite and minor silver-bearing sulphosalts. Processing alternatives tested include bulk sulphide recovery by flotation and gravity, selective pyrite-arsenopyrite separation, cyanidation, and oxidation pretreatments such as pressure leaching and bioleaching to enhance cyanidation response. Gold losses in the Main Zone ore are more closely associated with silver-bearing minerals, pyrite, and siliceous gangue and consequently respond more readily to conventional tank cyanidation. The 5 300 tid carbon-in-leach circuit to treat Main Zone flotation tailing is described in detail.IntroductionEquity Silver Mines Limited&apos;s open-pit silver mine, a 70% owned subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, is located 37 km southeast of Houston in north central British Columbia. The deposit consists of two major ore zones, Main Zone and Southern Tail (Fig. I). These zones are within a sequence of Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks striking 015 degree s and dipping 45 degrees west. Feasibility ore reserves were 28 million tonnes grading 106 g A g/t, 0.96 g Au !t and 0.38% Cu a strip ratio of 2.2 to I. A detailed mineralogical description has been presented and a comparison of the two ore zones is shown in Table I."

"The Snow Lake massive sulphide deposits are hosted by Aphebian volcanic rocks of the Flin Flon - Snow Lake greenstone belt, which in this area were deformed and metamorphosed to the amphibolite facies during the Hudsonian orogeny. All the known deposits occur in felsic rocks a short distance below the contact with an overlying mafic rock unit.The Stall Lake copper deposit occurs close to the top of an explosive felsic volcanic sequence. Rocks stratigraphically underlying the deposit have been hydrothermally altered by the mineralizing fluids. The sulphides were probably deposited from submarine volcanic vent(s) on the flanks of a felsic dome. The ore has been tightly folded, flattened and elongated parallel to the northerly trending lineation of the surrounding rocks during the several periods of deformation. Strike lengths of the lenses range from 60 to 300 feet and plunge-to-strike ratios are as much as 15:1.Ore lenses I to 4 typically consist of massive coarse-grained pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pyrite. A stratigraphically higher lens differs in that it contains fine-grained pyrite and chalcopyrite, with an increase in sphalerite toward its hanging wall. The No.4 orebody has a distinct footwall alteration zone characterized by brecciation and abundant chlorite-staurolite- garnet schist, with minor kyanite, anthophyllite, cordierite and anhydrite, as well as sulphide minerals. Chemically, the alteration zone is distinguished from the unaltered felsic rocks by Na20 depletion and Mg-Fe enrichment"

"A mineral processing investigation to recover chromite was performed at Lakefield Research, under the guidance of CANMET personnel, on a 70 tonne ore sample from the Bird River deposit in Manitoba. In the laboratory phase a flowsheet was developed which involved grinding, gravity separation and flotation. The gravity concentrates were upgraded by magnetic separation and the flotation concentrates by gravity concentration. Pre-concentration by electronic ore sorting, magnetic separation and heavy media separation also was examined.The developed flowsheet was applied on a pilot-plant scale in the second phase of the testwork to the ore as received, and to ore pre-concentrated by electronic ore sorting and magnetic separation. Ore pre-concentrated by heavy-media separation was treated on a laboratory scale based on the pilot-plant flowsheet.Processing the are as received resulted in 77% recovery of chromite in a concentrate analyzing 30% Cr20 J; processing are pre-concentrated by electronic are sorting resulted in 64% recovery of chromite in a concentrate analyzing 30.5% Cr20J.IntroductionA five-year mineral development sub-agreement was signed between the federal government and the province of Manitoba in 1984. The purpose of the agreement was to establish a work program which would strengthen and diversify the mineral resource industry of Manitoba. Basically, the agreement covers three sectors: Sector A, geoscience; Sector B, mining and minerals technology research; and Sector C, development studies.Project selection involved input from industry, federal and provincial representatives. In the case of industrial mineral s, the selection was initiated at a meeting held at the offices of the Department of Mines and Energy, Winnipeg, Manitoba, in October 1985. One such project was the evaluation of the chromite ore deposits at Bird River, Manitoba."

"A major Canadian chromite deposit at Bird River, Manitoba is one of the largest known chromite reserves in North America but it exhibits low chromium contents and low chromium to iron ratios. Commercial beneficiation techniques permit these ores to be upgraded to concentrations which, however, remain inferior to most other ores and concentrates used worldwide f or production of high-carbon ferrochromium. Analyses for reduction of low-grade concentrates by submerged-arc electrofurnace techniques predict chromium contents between 45.9% and 51% for a high-carbon ferrochromium alloy. Relatively high over-all chromium recoveries between 79.5% and 91. 1% can be achieved. Alloy compositions for Cr, Fe, C and Si are determined for various burdens with low-grade concentrates. Consumption data per ton contained chromium are obtained for electric power, coke, concentrate, quartzite and limestone. The data are compared with those of high-carbon ferrochromium producers in South Africa. Economic aspects are discussed and compared with a South African reference study.IntroductionThe present ferrochromium demand in the western world is estimated at approximately 1.7 Mt with a consumption of approximately 0.36 Mt in the U.S.III and 0.03 Mt in Canada&apos;-&apos;, A low estimate of the installed production capacity for ferrochromium in the non -communist world is 2.4 Mt. This production capacity of ferrochromium by far exceeds the demand, which is also evident from the fact that no shortage in supply of ferrochromium to the world markets was encountered in the past. Supply-demand comparisons therefore suggest that in the foreseeable future no new chromite or chromium producers should enter the world markets unless superior chromites or superior technologies are successful in competing with existing producers. Neither one of these conditions exist presently in Ca nada or the U.S., although essentially no ferrochromium is produced and no chromite is mined in these countries at the present time."

"In previous publications by the author, significant advances and generalizations of the theory of sampling of broken ores, prompted and confirmed by experimental results, have been presented. This paper shows how to implement these theoretical results in practice. The models to be used are reviewed, with a description of the various sampling parameters involved. Then the methodology for the experimental assessment of those parameters, including segregation factors, is described in simple and practical terms, along with the use of handy sampling protocol charts. Finally, the particularly important case of processing data from a sample-tree experiment is detailed, and examples of applications covering all situations and types of experiments are provided.IntroductionThe reliability of a sample of crushed material , i.e. the expected (average) deviation between its true grade and the true grade of the lot it comes from, mostly depends upon six factors:• the size (mass) of the sample (and to a minor extent, for small lots, the size of the lot);• the size of the rock particles (degree of comminution)• the nature of the mineralization at microscopic scale (i.e., within even the smallest particles);• the geological nature of the mineralization and mineral of interest;• the grade of the lot in the mineral of interest; and• in some cases, the state of segregation of the lot.In practice, one should first disregard segregation problems, and assess sample variability in the segregation-free case. Once the numerical parameters governing this variability have been assessed, then segregation factors can be assessed in turn. In the case of laboratory standard sample preparation procedures, segregation can usually be disregarded altogether."

"Abstract - North American Palladium Ltd. operates its Lac des Iles open pit palladium mine 85 km north of the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The Roby Zone deposit occurs within the mafic/ultramafic Lac des Iles Intrusive Complex (LDI-IC), which was created by multiple pulses of magma of varying composition within several closely spaced chambers. Chaotic lithological distribution, the presence of magmatic breccias, and the rarity of rhythmic layering suggest a dynamic intrusive environment with disruptive magma pulses. As of December 31, 2001, measured and indicated resources for the 950 m long by 815 m wide Roby Zone deposit totalled 159 Mt grading 1.55 g/t Pd, 0.17 g/t Pt, 0.12 g/t Au, 0.05% Cu, and 0.05% Ni at a palladium cut-off grade of 0.7 g/t. The Roby Zone contains an additional 73 Mt of inferred resources at similar grades.The Roby Zone is dominated by varitextured gabbro containing pipes and pods of breccia, and large blocks (~60 m across) of varying lithology. Mineralization at Lac des Iles occurs as: (1) a PGEand base metal-rich magmatic matrix of breccia (breccia ore); (2) mineralized dikes or sills (gabbronorite in North Roby ore); (3) lower-grade mineralization in varitextured units that are host to the distinctive breccia ore and envelope the North Roby ore; and (4) high-grade mineralization associated with strong silicate alteration exemplified by high-grade ore.The close spatial association of the mineralized breccias with both varitextured units and silicate alteration leads to an interpretation that the energetic magma that created breccia was charged with a dissolved fluid, and that this deuteric fluid exsolved at high temperatures to migrate through crystal mush, enhancing crystallization along its pathways, resulting in variable grain size. This transformation occurred at high temperature and produced sulfide-poor, varitextured gabbro-hosted mineralization exemplified by some of the mineralization in the North Roby Zone, and also found throughout the Roby Zone. The association of hydrous silicate alteration with mineralization can be explained by continuing fluid migration during cooling and continued metal transport. De plus, la Roby Zone contient 73 millions de tonnes de ressources inférées à une teneur similaire.La Roby Zone est principalement encaissée dans un gabbro de texture hétérogène (varitextured) caractérisé par des cheminées et des lentilles de brèches et des énormes blocs (environ 60 m de diamètre) de plusieurs lithologies. "Addressing a current operating and environmental concern, this paper first presents an overview of the design program for an underground radioactive waste storage vault. It then reviews the construction, operational and thermal-mechanical aspects of such a project. The relevant experience from major underground construction projects is reviewed and the paper concludes with brief comments on the design-oriented research and development requirements . 1. IntroductionA program to develop techniques for the ultimate disposal of high-level radioactive waste into geologic formations was announced by AECL in 1975 (Tamrnernagi, 1976), and is discussed more fully in a later document (Boulton, 1978). Our paper summarizes the studies caried out, as part of the AECL waste management program, by the authors and associates on the development of design concepts for a vault situated in crystalline rocks of the type present in the Canadian Shield.The design studies have been carried out in three phases, the elements of which are described in Section 2.1 (also see Fig. 1). The general vault designs are presented in Section 2.2. These provide for emplacement of either immobilized fuel or solidified reprocessing wastes in a room-and-pillar facility at a depth of 1,000 m.Section 3 reviews the principal design considerations from the construction, operation and thermal-mechanical response aspects. The concepts have been studied in both temporal and spatial domains, and the requirements and responses assessed in each as appropriate.Section 4 briefly reviews the availability of relevant experience from previous major underground construction projects. Finally, in Section 5, brief comments are given regarding design-oriented research and development requirements."

After more than 93% of the uranium is extracted from Elliot Lake uranium ores by a sulphuric acid leaching process, the leach residue (tailings) contains small amounts of uranium and radioactive isotopes, particularly radium-226, which is the most serious health hazard. Heavy metal components and pyrite are also present, along with the gangue minerals. Currently, over /000 acres of the Elliot Lake area are covered with these tailings, which contain over five million tons of pyrite. Because of constant oxidation of the pyrite by bacteria (thiobacillus) and the presence of moisture, pyrite slowly generates sulphuric acid, which steadily leaches the metal-bearing constituents from the tailings. The seepage-flows of the dissolved contaminants, although often quite low in volume, have an environmental impact on the Elliot Lake area. Although these seepages are treated and most of the contaminants removed and impounded, a small amount of the radioactive contaminants reaches Lake Huron via the Serpent River. This paper describes a flotation approach for treatment of the Elliot Lake uranium tailings to produce new, decontaminated tailings practically free of pyrite, with radium, thorium and uranium contents considerably reduced. The decontaminated tailing produced, which comprises about 75% by weight of the current uranium tailings, appears to be suitable for mine backfill. Because mine backfilling normally uses about 50% of the plant tailings, the surface storage of about half of the uranium tailings, therefore, would be eliminated by this process. Mine backfilling would also increase the mine production and thus enlarge the over-all uranium resources due to recovery of the ore from pillars. The pyrite concentrate produced from the current uranium tailings would be suitable for sulphuric acid production. The possibility of uranium recovery, and disposal of radium and thorium from the concentrates produced, is now being studied at CANMET.

"A diversity of structures and rock types in the Aft on pit has resulted in the occurrence of several different types of wall failure. Delivery of ore to the mill has not been affected and safety has not been compromised thanks to effective remedial 1V0rk and to a system of structural mapping, back analyses of failures, groundwater monitoring, and simple movement monitoring. Remedial measures have included artificial support, dewatering (including vacuum-assisted drainage), flattening of slopes and temporary buttressing. This paper describes six different wall failures at Afton and highlights the features of each. Examples given include rates of movement, extent and direction of movement, and piezometric responses. The practical, low-cost monitoring system was sufficient in one case to allow the prediction of date of failure. IntroductionThe Afton copper deposit is located 13 km west of Karnloops, British Columbia and has been mined for nine years out o f an expected eleven-year life. Open pit mining has reached 700 feet below sur face and is designed to proceed to 970 feet below surface by the time the pit is completed. The excavation is in a structurally and lithologically complex environment. Inevitably, some wall failures have occurred but these have been limited to small, manageable failures which have not compromised production or safety. To handle the failures it has been necessary to understand their nature. Of prim e concern has been the rate s of movement, but displacement vectors and hydrology have been monitored as well. The monitoring system is based on EDM surveys and on wire extensometers and plates set across cracks. Water levels have been read in standpipe piezometers. At Afton the emphasis has been on simple, practical, and inexpensive monitoring and because rock type s and structures play such a major role in any failure, detailed geologic al mapping is carried out."

The Key Lake nickel-uranium deposits are situated within the Wollaston domain of the Churchill structural province. The host rocks of the two orebodies are of Aphebian and Helikian age. The orebodies occur mainly within a 5.2-km-Iong, northeast-trending zone which coincides with the intersection of the sub-Athabasca unconformity and a reverse fault striking east-northeast. The principal controls of mineralization are structural and lithostratigraphic (i.e., post-Athabasca faults, the sub-Athabasca unconformity and graphitic metapelites in the lower Aphebian, close to the Aphebian/Archean unconformity). Grades of up to 35% U3O8 and 20% Ni are recorded over intervals of up to 2 m. Some hypogene zonation exists and the nickel mineralization tends to underlie the high-grade uranium ore. The ore minerals include pitchblende, a-U307, coffinite, gersdorffite, millerite, niccolite, bravoite, zoisite, sericite, chlorite and kaolinite. The kaolinite is a post-ore, supergene alteration product. Chemical studies of the sub-Athabasca paleo weathering profile sho w that regolithization is characterized by depletion in Si02 and K20 and concomitant enrichment in Al203 and perhaps MgO. In the paleoweathering profile the ferromagnes ian minerals are chloritized, the Ksfeldspars sericitized and the plagioclase saussuritized. Preliminary geochronologic data from the ores reveal U/Pb ages of -1228 my, - 960 my and 89 my, and Rb /Sr data indicate basement ages of -1850 my and - 1372 my. Aphebian pelitic protoliths, carrying U and Ni, may have released some metals during post-Hudsonian weathering, and minor concentration in structural and geochemical traps may have taken place prior to the deposition of the Athabasca strata. However, it is felt that the bulk ofthe ore-grade mineralization wasgenerated after the deposition of the Athabasca formation and after faulting, probably during a major regional thermal/ intrusive episode of Grenvillian age. Several episodes of remobilization took place between 1228and 89 my ago.

"During the early part of the 1980s, four new surface coal mines commenced operation in the Province of British Columbia. Each represented a major investment in both persons and materials in order to protect this investment in one significant area-the fixed portion of the surface coal handling system-a substantial amount of work was undertaken to ensure that the system was well protected from an outbreak of fire. A great deal of effort in this field had already been made by those coal mines which had been in operation for a number of years and experience gained at these operations was utilized in determining the level and extent of fire protection for the new mines.This paper summarizes the major problems, and suggests some of the methods of solution, in providing an adequate degree of fire protection for surface coal handling systems. It will also discuss the potential for gas and dust explosions together with ways to minimize this potential.The Fixed Coal Handling SystemNote: The word ""fixed"" has been used in its present context to denote that part of the coal handling system where the coal is moved via fixed installations such as a conveyor. It differentiates from that part of the system where coal is moved by mobile equipment.The raw coal delivered to the truck dump will undergo two major processes on its way to the rail load out. The first will be at the coal preparation plant where coal of specified quality will be extracted from the raw feed to the plant. If this coal is of metallurgical quality, and sometimes if it is of thermal quality, it will pass through a thermal dryer where part of the moisture acquired during coal preparation will be removed, i.e. the second process. As the complexity of both the coal preparation plant and the thermal dryer is such as to warrant separate considerations they will not form part of this paper. Each of the processes, however, is generally, housed in its own building, thus, containment of any hazards is usually more attainable than those existing or caused in the rest of the system."

Ce secteur s&apos;étend de la municipalité de Grenville jusqu&apos;au pare du Mont-Tremblant (nord de St-Jovite). D&apos;autres secteurs favorables a &apos;exploration pour la wollastonite ont été délimités dans les regions du Lac-Saint-Jean, de Shawinigan et de la Gatineau. Neuf categories litho-structurales de gites de wollastonite furent identifiées. L&apos;importance d&apos;un système ou vert pour la formation des gîtes de hautes teneurs fut établie. Un guide de prospection pour la wollastonite propre à la province tectonique de Grenville fut développé. Plusieurs des indices sont prometteurs et mériteraient des travaux de raise en valeur afin de determiner s&apos;ils représentent une source de wollastonite exploitable à profit. Deposits may be classified into nine categories depending on their relationship to intrusive rocks, discordant or concordant contacts with the host rocks, morphology, and major structural controls. Deposits consist mainly of wollastonite, calcite and clinopyroxene. They may contain one or several of the following minerals: feldspar, scapolite, quartz, titanite sulphides, zoisite, clinozoisite, garnet, idocrase and prehnite. Wollastonite content may reach over 70%. Some deposits are associated with graphite veins. Better understanding of the geology, combined with the proposed classification provides new exploration guide for wollastonite. Several deposits have grades of economic interest. Further work is needed to determine if any of these deposits can be exploited for profit."
