"Nuclear energy is an established and proven energy source. Today, CANDU-PHW nuclear-electric generating stations produce over one third of Ontario's total electrical supply: safely and economically. In many parts of Canada, where economic hydro resources do not exist or are fully developed, coal and nuclear energy are the only alternatives for future large-scale electrical generating capacity.Recent analyses have suggested that, in the f ace of increasing energy demands and decreasing reserves of hydrocarbon fuels, Canada must depend on electricity to provide an expanded fraction of its energy budget. Nuclear energy is likely to play an increasing role in the generation of electricity; there are also potential applications as a supplier of process heat in industry and in the in-situ recovery of bitumen fro m tar sands.The future supply of nuclear fuel, reactor safety and radioactive waste management are briefly discussed. In each case, the benefits to be gained from a controlled expansion in the use of nuclear energy outweigh any uncertainties which may exist."

"A review of lI5 significant volcanogenic massive sulphide discoveries in the Canadian Precambrian during the past 65 years reveals that only 7% resulted from surface exploration methods aimed at depths below the effective reach of current geotechnical systems. This has been due to the relative ease of shallow discovery, resulting in the harvesting of ore deposits within 100 m of surface. This surficial layer has been more or less effectively supersaturated by routine exploration. In view of the fact that a mining district's metal content is not likely to be confined to a surficial layer, the time has come to explore the vertical dimension, prospecting for ore at depths in excess of 150 m in productive districts.Essential to this task is an understanding of the Precambrian volcanogenic ore deposit model. The deposits generally have .a tendency to be associated with the terminal phases of felsic volcanism, and to be located along certain time-stratigraphic horizons, marked by the products of volcanic exhalation. The significant massive sulphide deposits are discrete entities, ranging from the top 5% of deposits greater than 45 million tonnes in size, with a surface area of 0.30 km2, to median-sized deposits greater than 1.2 million tonnes in size with a surface area of 0.02 km2. These significant economic ore deposits range in value from $5.5 billion for the top 5% of deposits to $125 million for median-sized deposits. In terms of their frequency of occurrence, the former group has a 4% distribution and the median-sized deposits have a 15% distribution.An historical review of many of the principal Precambrian mining districts, such as Noranda and Flin Flon, shows that major tonnages are usually discovered during the initial phase of application of each new geotechnical search system, until carried to its ultimate limit of effective depth penetration. With the exception of the Noranda district, the mean depth of ore discovery in the other districts is still generally confined to within 50 m of surface.Targeting deep ore is difficult. One effective prospecting method is the detection of fracture-controlled mercury leakage haloes in outcrop (or core) above and peripheral to blind deposits. This technique has proved to be a useful pathfinder, and focuses attention on deposits buried at depths in excess of 700 m in some instances. Down-hole EM systems also promise to be effective in locating deposits previously bypassed by drilling. In addition, trend surface analysis programs of trace element geochemistry should be used as an aid to targeting ore by directing exploratory drilling along the plane of ore-hosting stratigraphy.By definition, mining districts have a proven ""favourability"" for the occurrence of ore. Discovery probabilities in these districts will be considerably enhanced if future search efforts are concentrated below a depth of 150 m, and more use is made of ""deep"" ore search systems coupled with sound geological reasoning. Deep drilling programs to a depth of800 m should initially be designed to search for the top 25% of deposits greater than 3.3 million tonnes in size, with a surface area of0.05 kmt. :a value of$310 million and a 12% frequency of occurrence; This can be accomplished for an over-all cost approximating $40,000 per drill hole. If the search depth is limited to 400 m, the over-all cost of each drill hole is $20,000, equivalent to expenditures routinely allocated to grassroots exploration drilling in the remote greenstone belts of the Precambrian. Depending on a company's objective, prospecting for deep ore offers a stimulating challange - though risky, it has its rewards."

"The recovery and separation of platinum-group metals (PGM) from primary and secondary materials currently attracts a lot of interest due to the high value of the metals and their increasing demand for high-tech applications. Thus, the traditional refining processes are gradually replaced by newer more efficient separation techniques such as solvent extraction and ion exchange. In this paper the classical and modern refining techniques are reviewed and the pertinent solution chemistry dictating proper processing strategies in each case is discussed. The technological advantages of the modern separation methods are emphasized and reference to the recovery of PGM from primary as well as secondary materials is given. INTRODUCTIONDue to their outstanding physicochemical properties, such as catalytic activity, conductivity and corrosion/oxidation resistance, precious metals now find extensive usage outside of the traditional jewellery and investment industries. The increasing use of precious metals in such areas as electronics and catalysis, as well as their increasing high value, has led to a growing interest in their recovery and separation from primary and secondary materials.Quantitatively the demand of platinum metals in the western world by area of application is described in Table I. Platinum and palladium represent 90% of the total demand, Rh and Ru 8% and the remaining is taken by Ir and Os. In terms of value the following were the average prices (US$/oz) of the metals in the second half of 1986: 500 Pt, 125 Pd, 1200 Rh, 650 Os, 400 Ir and 80 Ru. Due to these prices, exploration, mining, reclamation and refining activity were very high in South Africa, the biggest producer of Pt metals in the world, as well as in other areas: United States (Stilwater deposit), Canada (Sudbury, Marathon and Lac des Isles, Ontario; Kenly Lake, Quebec, etc.), Australia, Europe and elsewhere"

"Australia's prosperity relies significantly on income generated from exports of resources and agricultural products. In 1989-1990, coal was Australia's most valuable export commodity, contributing. A $5.7 billion or 14% of all export income.The abundance and quality of its coal resources and the proximity of Australia to the rapidly developing economies of Southeast Asia were significant factors that encouraged export-oriented growth and investment and will continue to do so. On the other hand, the 1980shighlighted the sensitivity of the industry to international changes in supply and demand, currency and socio-political forces.Following many years of disappointing returns for investors, mainly as a result of falling Australian dollar coal prices, resolve will be necessary to maintain competitiveness with resource-rich nations. In recent years, operators, unions and governments have begun to embark on a long overdue rationalization of domestic issues in a bid to increase productivity and reduce costs.The nature of mining operations is also changing; deeper surface mines and the growth of longwall mining will require the development of new technology and skills. Other challenges emerging from the international environmental debate will require that Australia responds appropriately to demands for cleaner fuels, energy efficiency and environmental responsibility.The future development of the Australian coal industry will therefore be influenced by its own ability to become more efficient and mature in the production of quality coal products and through rational international response to environmental questions."

Unfortunately, in most cases, there is a tradeoff involved; when the price drops so does the quality, which can adversely affect owning and operating costs. "Abstract - Volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits, an important base-metal deposit type in China, occur widely in submarine volcanic districts of variable magmatic affinities. These VMS deposits range in age from Archean to Mesozoic, but most are in Proterozoic and Paleozoic sequences. More than 60% of VMS deposits formed in the Paleozoic, the most important metallogenic eon. Three important Paleozoic VMS-metallogenic provinces include Northern Qilian, Sanjiang and Altai provinces. The Proterozoic constitutes the next important era, but with no VMS deposits in the middle Proterozoic. VMS deposits associated with the Proterozoic volcanic rocks occur around the Yangtze Platform and in the western Kunlun-Qinling. The Triassic is third in importance, with VMS deposits concentrated in the Sanjiang Tethys. The Archean has only one VMS deposit, on the northern margin of the Sino-Korea Platform.Five distinct compositional classes of Chinese VMS deposits have been distinguished: Cu, Cu- Zn (or Zn-Cu), Cu-Fe, Zn-Pb-Cu, and Pb-Zn (-Cu). The Cu, Cu-Co, and Cu-Zn types of deposits occur sporadically from the Archean to Paleozoic, and are closely associated with mafic and ultramafic volcanic sequences. The Zn-Pb-Cu and some Cu-Zn type deposits are restricted to the Paleozoic and Triassic, and are hosted by calc-alkaline felsic rocks in bimodal basalt-rhyolite sequences, whereas Cu-Fe and Pb-Zn type (except for the Laochang deposit) deposits are restricted to the Proterozoic and occur in calc-alkaline volcanic sequences. As large quantities of marine mafic volcanic rocks were deposited in western China, Cu and Cu-Zn deposits are major types of Chinese VMS deposits.Chinese VMS deposits formed in a wide range of paleo-tectonic settings and depositional environments, such as island-arcs, rifts, aulacogens, and ocean ridge hot spots. Among these, the rift and back-arc environments are the most important, containing about 60% of Chinese VMS deposits. Aulacogens are a subordinate environment where most of the Proterozoic VMS deposits formed. The oceanic ridge and hot-spot systems are common in the tectono-magmatic domains in China, but contain only a few small Cu and Cu-Zn type VMS deposits.The Chinese VMS deposits have usually been influenced by both deformation and metamorphism to various degrees, resulting in changes in the shape and metal distribution. Seven representative deposit styles have been recognized: sheets, sheet plus strata-bound stringer, cyclically zoned deposits, mounds, mound-like deposits, strata-bound stringer-disseminated, and stockwork-disseminated deposits. The formation of these various styles of deposits is controlled by several key factors, such as lithology and permeability of the host rocks, focused or unfocused discharge, temperature and chemical composition (e.g., salinity) of hydrothermal fluids, as well as depth of seawater."

"Canada's largest known chromite deposit occurs in a layered intrusion in the Bird River area of Manitoba. However, numerically most of the chromite occurrences are in the Appalachians. Few, apparently minor, occurrences are also known in the Cordillera.In the Appalachians, chromite occurs as lenses and pods in dunite; they are of ""podiform"" type. The individual concentrations vary in size from a few pounds to tens of thousands of tons. Locally, chromite concentrations form discontinuous zones extending several hundred feet along strike and presumably down dip, therefore resembling boudinaged layers. Chromite layering and lineation are commonly concordant to those of the host rocks.The Appalachian chromite occurrences are thought to have been formed by fractional crystallization and perhaps also by liquid immiscibility. Their present shape and distribution are largely the result of deformation mostly prior to complete solidification of their host rocks. Therefore, the attitude of layering, foliation, lineation and other features related to deformation provide valuable guides in predicting the probable distribution of chromite, and hence are helpful in exploration.Chromites fulfilling the requirements for metallurgical, refractory and chemical grades occur in the Appalachians. Although the Appalachian deposits are similar in size and grade to some of the chromite deposits being mined elsewhere, they are unlikely to be economic, at present, in the higher wage Canadian environment. However, in case of shortages in chromite ore supply which may result, among other reasons, from increasing tendency to further processing in the producing countries, the Appalachian occurrences may become sources of ore. Such eventual shortages combined with relative abundance of electricity in Canada and recent innovations in oxide ore reduction technology may hasten the time when ferrochrome manufacture based on local chromite sources becomes economically viable."

"In the 1950s, Canada produced more than ninety-five percent of the non-communist world's nickel and achieved dominance in terms of production, technology and pricing policies.Over the past thirty years there have been dramatic changes in the nickel industry to the extent that Canadian production is now less than thirty per cent of the total.In this document we have presented statistics relevant to this transformation and reviewed the technology, particularly with regards to energy and environmental considerations.Under the new market conditions nickel producers are likely to face more difficult competition than they have encountered in the past.The economic scene and measured nickel reserves dictate that for the purpose of increasing production, new nickel smelters will not be built in Canada in the foreseeable future. However, in order to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions, Canadian nickel smelters will possibly go through some modifications or rebuilding.IntroductionThis paper presents a review of the Canadian nickel industry in relation to the world nickel industry. Major changes are described which have occurred in the characteristics of the nickel market over the last thirty years. The pre sent status of the nickel market with respect to Forecasting future trends is reviewed and attempts are made to predict what further changes will take place in the next two decades. Comparisons are made of the economics of producing nickel from sulphide ores and oxide ores and the advantages and disadvantages the Canadian nickel producers face.A brief critique of the existing and emerging nickel production technologies in Canada and the world is carried out and attempts are mad e to predict the changes which may take place in the foreseeable future."

"The uranium deposits upon which the Rabbit Lake project story is based are located at the eastern margin of the Athabasca Basin just west of Wollaston Lake in northern Saskatchewan. This paper provides a general review of the exploration history for the major deposits and the influence of an expanding geological data base, which served to guide the continuing exploration programs.A brief description of each of the deposits is provided in order of their discovery and with emphasis upon their relative geological and mineralogical characteristics.The Rabbit Lake and Eagle Point orebodies are monometallic uranium deposits localized by thrust faults within the Aphebian Wollaston Group. The Cof/ins Bay A-zone, B-zone, and D-zone are polymetaflic U, Ni, As, Co (Au , Ag) deposits located within the Helikian Athabasca Group at its unconformable contact with the underlying Wollaston Group. INTRODUCTIONThis paper demonstrates the importance of applying the accumulated geological knowledge, gained through the exploration, mining, and development process, to the ongoing success of exploration programs. To emphasize this point, the basic geology of each of the major Rabbit Lake area deposits will be presented in chronological order of their discovery and subsequent development. These depos its include Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay A-zone, B-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point. The geological descriptions are based primarily upon the detailed observations of many current and former geologist s employed by both Gulf Minerals Canada Limited and Eldorado Resources Limited. Much of the early historical data was obtained from Dr. E.E.N. Smith, formerly with Eldorado Resources Limited. Regional GeologyThe Rabbit Lake area which includes the Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay A-zone, B-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point deposit s, is located on the eastern edge of the Athabasca Basin close to the western shores of Wollaston Lake (Fig. I). The area is in the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield within the Wollaston lithostructural domain, at the eastern edge of the Athabasca Group. The uranium deposits occur within both the Wollaston Group metasedimentary assemblage of probable early Aphebian age, and the diagenetic ally altered quartz sandstones and conglomerates of the Athabasca Group of Paleohelikian age. Both units unconformably overlie granitoid gneisses interlayered with metasediments and a graphitic iron formation all believed to be of Archean age. All uranium depo sits in the Rabbit Lake area occur in close proximity to the Paleohelikian - Aphebian or Paleohelikian - Archean unconformity."

"This paper introduces a new approach for the design of rib pillars. The approach involves an empirical method for pillar design and a discussion of the pillar stability used for open stope mining methods.The empirical method predicts the degree of stability of rib pillars. Pillar load is estimated using two and three dimensional numerical modelling. Rock strength and the shape effect of pillars are used to account for pillar strength. The method has been calibrated with case histories from Canadian open stope metal mines and is compared with other methods used [or pillar design.INTRODUCTIONThe role of rib pillars in open stope mining is to provide stability to a mining block by limiting rock mass displacements and restricting the exposure of a rock mass in stope backs and stope walls. They also provide flexibility in ore extraction by dividing a stope block into multiple working faces.The use of backfill in open stope mining methods has reduced somewhat the need for optimum pillar design. In contrast to permanent pillar methods, the dimensions do not need to be minimized because the pillars are usually recovered in a later stage of mining. However, the consequences of poor pillar design are often overlooked and can still be severe. A pillar that does not perform its intended role may result in excessive stope or pillar sloughing, difficult and expensive pillar recovery, loss of permanent access and remedial costs such as development rehabilitation, artificial support or low productivity.Pillar design concepts of the past were not developed for open stope mining conditions and generally have not been confirmed for open stoping. The focus of this paper is to introduce an empirical design relationship specifically for open stope pillars. It provides a stable, yielding or failed pillar assessment for a given design."

"Quinsam Coal Ltd. is assessing the potential of developing a thermal coal deposit near Middle Quinsam Lake on Vancouver Island. The coal reserve outlined is classified as a high-volatile, bituminous ""A” steam coal and is composed off our separate seams of varying quality within the Late Cretaceous Comox Formation.Open-pit mining methods will utilize a walking dragline and a truck / shovel module as the primary stripping tools. Following washing and mechanical drying in a Baum jig preparation plant, the coal will be transported to the proposed dock at Campbell River for shipment via 55, OOO-DWT vessels to world markets. The paper will outline the development and status of the project to date. IntroductionQuinsam Coal Ltd. is a joint venture of Weld wood of Canada Ltd. and Luscar Ltd . The participants propose to develop a thermal coal mine in the Middle Quinsam Lake area, 17 miles inland from Campbell River on Vancouver Island (Fig. I). By acquiring all the assets of Canadian Collieries in 1962, Weldwood also came to own the coal rights of the area proposed for development. Luscar Ltd . ha s been designated as project manager until completion of construction and thereafter will act as operator of the mine.Surface mining methods will be used to produce approximately 1.0 million short tons of coal annually from the Quinsam property. Seven separate mining pit s will be developed along with the supporting minesite facilities, including a proper paration plant. Transportation routing to Campbell River and the establishment of docking facilities will be required. The initial economic life of the mine is 12 years, with the provision to extend this in the future by developing higher-ratio, auger or underground reserves."

"This paper addresses the occurrence and indicated causes of conveyor fires in North American and European underground mines. Some significant convey or fires which have been experienced in recent years in Canadian hardrock mines are then reviewed. The nature of existing conveyor monitoring technology is considered in the context of such fire hazards. Experiences with new monitoring technology recently installed at several conveyor sites at Inca Ltd. mines are then reviewed.IntroductionFires associated with conveyors have long been recognized as a serious hazard in underground coal mines. Recently, however, there have been some significant conveyor fires in Canadian underground hardrock mines. These offer important evidence as to the nature and causes of potential hardrock mine fifes. They also warrant attention with a view to improving over-all mine design, ventilation and emergency preparedness.In addition, a new era in mine communications and monitoring technology has been entered which should offer improved capability to protect against such fires. This paper was motivated by the need to understand the causes and mechanisms of conveyor fires in order to improve their safety. This should be possible through implementing more effective monitoring systems, as well as improving conveyor design. Underground mines are becoming more intensively mechanized, with less human surveillance of equipment and a greater dependency on remote monitoring systems."

"Developments in pyrometallurgical technology have led to larger furnaces operating under more intense process conditions. In order to maintain the reliability of these furnaces, which are frequently single-line units, the design of the refractories, cooling systems and bindings has become more critical. Traditional thermal and chemical requirements for the refractory to resist slag attack must still be carefully determined. The larger, modem furnaces have placed a new emphasis on the structural properties of the refractories as well as their thermal properties to suit the extensive cooling systems. Based on operating experience, supported by computer models, the refractories and bindings are designed to work together to accommodate the thermal expansions and contractions in order to minimize permanent furnace growth and the risks of leaks. IntroductionElectric furnaces are used extensively in smelting copper and nickel ores and concentrates. Laterite nickel ores and high-magnesia copper, nickel and platinum sulphide concentrates are smelted virtually exclusively in electric furnaces to accommodate the high melting point of the slags produced. Although a number of smelting processes using oxygen-enriched and/or preheated air have been developed to replace reverberatory furnace smelting of conventional copper and copper-nickel concentrates, (lnco, Noranda, Outokumpu, Mitsubishi) electric matte furnaces remain a strong process alternative for these concentrates, either as the primary smelting vessel or for cleaning the slags produced from these processes.The development of large, high-powered furnaces has been an important factor in the growth of electric smelting technology, as evidenced by the list of operating matte and ferronickel furnaces shown in Table I. Because the compressive forces required to maintain a tight, leak-free furnace increase with furnace dimensions, the selection and design of the furnace refractories, cooling systems and bindings require increased attention."

"The whole work carried out both in situ and in laboratory by a research group of the West German collieries is presented. This work has led to a design method of steel arch supports for gate roadways that gives full satisfaction in this particular coalfield. The method accounts for mining depth, the mining system (advancing or retreating), thickness of the coal seam and other parameters.Full statistics are then given on gate roadway supports of the ECCS (European Community for Coal and Steel) coalfields. They were collected by the author in order to show that the West German method can be applied to other coalfields as the long wall systems which are generally being used are very similar. Design calculations are conducted for each coalfield's case. They show that the method would have been able to predict in most cases the support actually used.Utilization of the design method is recommended to the Cape Breton Development Corporation 's mine operators because mining conditions, even though different from European ones, present a number of similarities which make it possible to apply the design method to their particular case.This procedure might be profitable in mines facing support problems in their levels and for any planning of future projects"

"Cryogenic engineering is concerned with components and machines which operate for long periods of time at temperatures within a few degrees of absolute zero. The absence of a ductile-brittle transition is thus the prime component of the specification for a suitable low-temperature alloy. The word "" cryo"" means ""frost-forming"" , and this leads to the second component of the alloy specification, which is resistance to corrosion in humid atmospheres. Further, although most early applications of low-temperature alloys were limited to the storage or transportation of liquified gases, an increasing proportion of alternative energy storage and conversion technologies are being based on the availability of high-field superconducting solenoids. The third basic component of the specification for a low-temperature alloy is thus the absence of a low-temperature ferromagnetic transition.Although the firs t two of these components of the specification can be met by using austenitic stainless steels, many of these supposedly "" non-magnetic"" alloys have been found to undergo martensitic transformations to ferromagnetic phases at very low temperatures. In addition, steels which remain structurally stable may still exhibit other magnetic transitions, e.g. to antiferromagnetic or superparamagnetic states. The successful application of these alloys in cryogenic engineering has thus required an initial basic study of the types of magnetic transition that can occur in such concentrated solid solutions, followed by a more applied study directed at an alloy formulation which will induce beneficial magnetic states at low temperatures."

"A laboratory and field research program was conducted to investigate the major factors influencing bond capacity of grouted cable bolts. The results indicate that cable bolt capacity most critically depends on the grout uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), the radial confinement, and the embedment length.In the laboratory &apos;split-pipe&apos; tests were conducted using P VC, aluminum and steel pipes to provide radial confinement, and field test sites were chosen in granite, limestone and shale rock masses. For both datasets higher capacities were obtained under conditions of higher radial confinement. A correlation between the two was obtained through a comparison of the radial wall stiffness of the laboratory pipes with that of the field boreholes as measured using a high pressure dilatometer. Cable bolt capacity was found to increase with embedment length though not in direct proportionality.The use of low water cement ratio grouts (<0.40) can increase cable bolt capacities by 50% to 75%. This effect is maximized under conditions of high radial confinement. However, the use of super thick grout paste (0.30 and less) may be both impractical and undesirable, first because of their limited pumpability and second because of their inconsistency in strength. "AECL Research has constructed an underground laboratory for the research and development required for the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. The experimental program in the laboratory will contribute to the assessment of the feasibility and safety of nuclear fuel waste disposal deep in stable plutonic rock.In 1988, AECL extended the shaft of the Underground Research Laboratory (URL) from the existing 255 m depth to a depth of 443 m in cooperation with the United States Department of Energy (USDOE). The project, which involved carrying out research activities while excavation and construction work was in progress, required careful planning. To accommodate the research programs, full-face blasting with a burn cut was used to advance the shaft. Existing facilities at the URL had to be modified to accommodate an expanded underground facility at a new depth. This paper discusses the design criteria, shaft-sinking methods and approaches used to accommodate the research work during this shaft extension project.IntroductionThe Underground Research Laboratory (URL), a major geotechnical research facility, has been developed by AECL Research, 120 km northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The URL is part of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program (CNFWMP), which is assessing the concept of nuclear fuel waste disposal in a vault deep in stable plutonic rock of the Canadian Shield (Hancox, 1986). The URL provides a representative environment to conduct a wide variety of geotechnical research relevant to nuclear waste disposal. Extensive characterization and monitoring programs were carried out prior to construction and will continue during operation. The operating phase experiments began in 1989 and will continue until the year 2CXXl (Simmons, 1990). Figure I shows the present extent of the URL facilities and the proposed future development."

"A multielement (Au, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, c-, Ag, As, Hg, Co, and S) geochemical rock sampling survey was carried out in 1977 in the Munro Township area of Ontario to assess the application of rock geochemistry for gold exploration in the region. Detailed sampling with analysis for gold and arsenic was done in 1986 in the immediate vicinity of the Croesus Mine.Samples of quartz veins and rock formations were taken in regional traverses and in more detail near old showings, prospect pits, and trenches. Quartz, graywacke, carbonate rock, and rhyolite contain the highest concentrations of gold for samples taken away from the old workings. Ultramafic rocks and gabbro have uniformly low gold. Basalt samples have slightly higher geometric means, but individual samples contain high gold concentrations. Multielement highs are mostly in mineralized quartz samples. Gold distribution is independent of other elements in most other rock types. Samples near old showings possess elevated concentrations of gold indicating that prospecting for individual mineral deposits by bedrock sampling is feasible. Concentrations of gold greater than 100 ppb are mostly within 30 m of old workings. Those samples which contain greater than 1000 ppb Au were obtained from quartz veins, basalt, graywacke, and rhyolite.High concentrations of gold were not notably concentrated near the Contact Fault although some anomalous samples came from near and on both sides of the fault. Arsenic concentrations are elevated near the Contact Fault. Detailed sampling near the Croesus Mine suggests that gold was introduced with faulting, alteration and quartz veining. Gold and arsenic have been added to the wallrock in the vicinity of the main veins."

"The presence in Saskatchewan of sixteen kimberlite pipes of probable late Albian age has been reported. An abundance of aeromagnetic anomalies possibly attributable to kimberlite pipes have been identified and it is anticipated that industry has acquired reasonable proof of the presence of more than seventy k imberlite pipes in Saskatchewan. Historical reports of diamonds, the discovery of kimberlite pipes and these aeromagnetic anomalies indicate the Phanerozoic Basin and some parts of the exposed Shield in Saskatchewan have an excellent potential f or the occurrence of economically exploitable diamond deposits. The presence of some igneous minerals found in some salt solution breccias also indicates the probable occurrence of extensive diatreme activity during the Devonian.A Laramide Orogeny-induced crustal hinging or arching of the eastern margin of the Phanerozoic Basin and probably dextral wrenching-induced arching and faulting within the basin are proposed as major factors in the emplacement of Cretaceous or younger kimberlites. Zones of crustal weakness between subcratonic Archean blocks and internal faults are also thought to be significant controlling factors in the location of kimberlites in Saskatchewan.Mapped aeromagnetic anomalies interpreted as being possibly due to kimberlite pipes generally tend to be concentrated in, areas underlain by a basement of or with components of Archean age. Within Saskatchewan, these anomalies occur within the probable Trans-Hudson Orogen zone; the Rae-Hearn Craton margin; and the northeast flank of the Elkpoint Basin. Recognized areas of potential f or kimberlite emplacement are the Phanerozoic basin margin, the western limit of the Superior Province adjoining the Churchill Province, and a swath approximately 150m wide along the northeast-southwest trending Shaunavon linear and other areas of inner basin arching."

"This paper presents the statistical analyses of several sets of data acquired in several programs of sampling of radon daughters in uranium mines. The measurements were taken over periods of days or weeks for given locations or location occupations within these mines. Because the sampling applies to specific intervals of time and specific locations, a method is suggested f or the eventual application of a monitoring program which would be suitable on an annual basis for these locations. The present data and analyses thereof are not justifiably applicable to a monitoring regimen on an annualbasis, without a number of additional assumptions.The aim of the present analyses of concentration measurements is the determination of the minimum number of measurements required to achieve an annual radon daughter exposure estimate, for individual workers, having an error no greater than 50% at the 95% confidence level. The criterion of accuracy is taken from a statement in the American National Standard, Radiation Protection in Uranium Mines (ANSI NI3.8-I973), and is currently used, in somewhat modified form, as a guide to uranium mining licensees in Canada. Uncertainties associated with occupancy time are ignored in the present analysis. IntroductionOne of the principal aims of any scheme of radiation protection is that of improving the accuracy of exposure estimation for workers. The example presented here is from the area of radon daughter exposure estimation for uranium miners. The conventional means of estimating workers&apos; exposures is grab sampling of radon daughter concentrations combined with occupancy time weighting in the various work and travel locations. Uncertainties exist in each of these components, and in an environment of highly variable radon daughter concentrations (such as an active uranium mine) one is always uncertain as to the representativeness of the grab sample (compared to the average concentration) unless a sophisticated monitoring scheme has been implemented based on previous experience in such an environment.Improvements in the accuracy and precision of employee radon daughter exposure records depend, primarily, on three factors;"
