Incompetent ore and country rock have caused stability problems in longhole open stopes. Fully grouted pre-placed cablebolts have reduced these by preventing ground relax- ation and joint dilation to maintain a self supporting rock structure. Larger atope spans can now be opened with the same or smaller pillar. Mining methods are expected to become less dependent on original ground conditions. Effect of spacing, orientation and stress distribution along the cablebolt is not fully understood at this stage and requires more Observation.

AND INTRODUCTION The Lochiel coal deposit, a large Tertiary soft brown coal deposit in the mid north of South Australia, is currently being investigated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) as a potential source of fuel for a base load power station. Feasibility studies indicated that the proposed dragline method of overburden removal was viable but economically sensitive to both highwail and dump batter angles. The unusual properties of the unconsolidated overburden sediments and the groundwater regime posed a number of intimately related hydrogeological and geotechnical questions which were addressed before and during the excavation of a trial pit. All strata at Lochiel are of soil strength, and artesian aquifers occur above and below the coal. From the initial evaluation of the deposit a number of hydrogeological questions were defined. These related to the rate at which the pore pressure in the silts is reduced by dewatering, the extent of the reduction in pore pressure due to prestripping, and the feasibility of dewatering and depressurising carbonaceous silty sand sequences. The site of the trial pit was selected to answer these and other questions from the basis of a detailed geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical understanding. The trial pit dewatering system simulated a full scale mine dewatering system and included ten pumped wells, twenty drainage wells, and nearly 400 monitoring instruments. It operated from September 1986 to June 1987. The excavation was carried out between February and May 1987.

Large Off Highway Trucks operated in this country are generally of Diesel Electric Drive, this system tends to employ the familiar Electric Wheel. A number of fleets now employ the Traction Motor System as an alternative. An investigation is made of the operation of two such fleets. A brief description is given defining the components and their basic functions in each system. Available life history is presented and system reliability, maintainability and operator reaction is examined. Although manufacturers are now offering mechanical or mechanical/hydraulic drives in the larger machines comments will be restricted to examining the Diesel Electric System. Since commencing operations in the mid 1960 period Hamersley Iron has made use of the diesel electric drive system using the familiar Electric Wheel. CREAM is an acronym for coal recovery, evaluation, analysis and management and is a business improvement project at BMAÆs Goonyella Riverside mine that is focussed on maximising coal recovered. In August 2003, Goonyella Riverside was set a challenge to quantify coal loss and dilution and their relationship to cost, revenue and ultimately profit. While the mine was confident in its site forecasts of recovery (and loss), it was clear that the traditional measurement and analysis systems were inadequate to firstly, identify key loss areas and mechanisms and secondly, successfully quantify the benefit of various coal recovery initiatives. The path that BMA Goonyella Riverside has travelled to maximise coal recovered can be divided into four key steps: Mapping the process û This step involved the development of a coal flow process map for Goonyella Riverside that stepped through each component of the process from the coal reserve to the customer and identified key measurement points for the purposes of reconciliation. Understanding coal loss and identifying opportunities û This step involved conducting two detailed Reserve to Customer projects at the mine site to track a block of coal from the reserve to the customer and to gain a greater understanding of the relationship of dilution, coal loss mechanisms, revenue and costs associated with recovering additional coal. Coal data systems development û Two important coal data systems have been developed and implemented at Goonyella Riverside in the past twelve months, namely SnowdenÆs Coal Reconcilor and SeamFix. These systems enable coal losses and dilution to be quantified and reconciled back to the initial coal reserve. Implementation of loss reduction initiatives û This step involved the formation of a business improvement project referred to as æCREAMÆ in August 2004, for the purposes of improving pit coal recovery and maximising business value. To date a series of coal recovery trials have been run in a number of pits at Goonyella Riverside that have yielded significant improvements in business value. The key to the success of this project has been the discipline to follow a defined process map, management commitment through resourcing and shared key performance indicators, a successful acceptance strategy resulting in holistic ownership and the implementation of sustainable reconciliation systems. Coal loss and dilution are now quantifiable and their relationship to cost, revenue and ultimately profit is well understood. This paper discusses the process that Goonyella Riverside has adopted to maximise coal recovered.

The accurate calculation of ore reserves is one of the most important functions under- taken at a potential or operating mine. In recent years there has been a trend towards recommending more and more complex techniques for the calculation of reserves. However these are not always necessary and many improvements could be made by the use of all potential data and a heavier geological input. An ore reserve should be the result of geological not mathe- matical or engineering reasoning. All ore reserve estimates are wrong and the important thing is to.recognise why they-are wrong and to take action to minimize the errors. Geostatistics and other complex mathematical techniques may appear to answer all our needs for ore reserve accuracy but there are many drawbacks, not least of which is the communi- cation gap which may develop between the operator and both management and production Personnel.

Recovery of metallic values from lean-grade raw materials as well as from secondary/intermediate industrial products is of immense importance to a country like India which is not endowed with extensive sources of copper and nickel. The results of a few studies carried out in this area are described in Part-I and Part-II in this article. A novel anode casting system, specially designed for a small copper refinery which had been set up to produce copper wire bars/rods is described briefly in Part-III.

Goldsworthy Mining Limited is currently mining iron ore at an annual rate of 7 million tons from several small orebodies, each of which exhibit wide variations in iron, phosphorus, silica and alumina contents. Each orebody is mined at its average ore reserve grade and therefore mine planning and grade control techniques have had to be tailored to achieve a constant production blend.

Tailings disposal and water management are one of the most important environmental issues in mining projects. The nature and the method of disposal of the tailings will determine the long term environmental impacts and must be carefully considered at the planning stage so that final abandonment can be economically achieved. If not, long term and on-going treatment and amelioration may be required to achieve environmental standards. Final abandonment requires dam safety surveillance inspection to satisfy engineering stability and hazard requirements as well as environmental issues. Environmental issues include stability, as well as rehabilitation and long term contamination potential.

During early 2004, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) began an aggressive exploration and drilling program in the Chichester Range, targeting iron enrichment developed in the Nammuldi Member at the base of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation. The timely recognition by FMG of distinct zones of (hypogene) microplaty hematite (mplH) enrichment overprinted by extensive supergene mineralisation led to an early reappraisal of the geological history of the area and characterisation of the possible structural and stratigraphic controls on mineralisation. Regionally, the Chichester Range dips gently at less than 5¦ to the south, however, detailed mapping shows that this regional limb is overprinted by low amplitude, long wavelength, north/south to northeast/southwest trending folds. The locations of major structures in the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, combined with spectral analysis of known mineralisation, allowed extrapolation and prioritisation of exploration target areas. The delineation under cover and understanding of these structures was enhanced by detailed airborne magnetic data. Recognition that supergene mineralisation was associated with a palaeotopography that continued significantly under cover to the south under sediments of the Fortescue River valley led to the discovery of extensive supergene mineralisation together with additional mplH mineralisation. A model for the landscape evolution and preservation of enriched Nammuldi Member was generated in order to help communicate both the complexities involved with targeting drill holes beneath cover and the potential limits to the lateral extents of mineralisation.

The Mt. Tom Price orebody of Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited consists of a folded hematite - shale sequence capped by a layer of goethite. Consequently, variations in iron content occur within the orebody, and as the overall grade is below that required to make specification products, selective mining must be carried out. A necessary preliminary to quality control'of products based on selective mining is the production of advance data, on the tonnages and grades of material to be expected in future mining areas. Bench plans showing zones of different grades and types of material anticipated are prepared from structural geological information. The grades of materials on a bench are essentially governed by the positions and attitudes of the shale bands. Quality control is exercised by blending different grades and types of material in primary crusher feed. Iron grade is the prime grade consideration although sometimes the level of phosphorus content must be considered. Pre-production grades Are determined from assay of samples taken from blasthole cuttings.

An alternative development drilling strategy to the one currently in use at an open pit mine was investigated using geostatistics for a portion of the pit. The massive orebody, the 3-D nature of the problem, and the location of ultimate pit limit in the study area all created some unique problems in devising the development drilling strategy. Rather than using confidence interval of the global reserve estimate as the main criterion for development drilling, the confidence interval of short and medium range mine planning blocks was used as the objective. Based on somewhat arbitrarily selected level of confidence, the results from the study showed that a total of 50 diamond drillholes (DDHs) rather than the planned 62 DDHs is sufficient in the study area, if the selected confidence levels are acceptable to the management. The paper also emphasizes the importance of particular objectives being used in development drilling and how they influence the "optimal" placement of the development drillholes.

With the economic trend towards reduced capital spend, more stakeholders are focusing on improved operational efficiency and productivity. Advancements in achieving the optimum dollar-per-tonnage will be more dependent on creating a logistics system that is well balanced and economically optimised. Critical to predicting a successful business case is the ability to accurately define capacity, realistically increase throughput and proactively translate objectives into design and operating requirements. Failure to do this will create an unrealistic perception of capacity and performance for the export corridor. This transition requires a fundamental understanding of the drivers that impact capacity, cost and value across the entire logistics chain. Through examples, this paper will identify the contextual requirements for simulation models that assist decision-makers and stakeholders to more clearly understand the implications of decisions that will define capacity and operational performance. The central Taupo Volcanic Zone is a region of intense Quaternary silicic volcanism accompanying rapid crustal extension. Modem central TVZ is the most frequently active and productive silicic volcanic system on Earth, erupting rhyolite at c. 0.28 m' s'. The rhyolites show no major compositional changes with time, but the total extent of magma chamber zonation has changed with the advent of rifting and crustal extension at c.0.7 Ma. At least 34 caldera-forming ignimbrite eruptions have formed a complex sequence of relatively short-lived, nested and/or overlapping volcanic centres in central TVZ. Taupo contrasts with other large silicic magmatic systems in the exceptionally high frequency, but small size, of caldera- forming eruptions. This contrast reflects the thin, rifted nature of the TVZ crust, that precludes the development of long- term magmatic cycles at Taupo.Within central TVZ, non-rhyolitic compositions have been erupted apparently irregularly in time and space; in particular there is no evidence for a geographic separation of basalts from andesites. TVZ is a rifted arc, but its segmented nature, high thermal flux and voluminous rhyolitic volcanism make it unique on Earth.

The Lake Rotokaua sulphur deposit, near Taupo, New Zealand, is a lacustrine sedimentary ore body, 220 acres in area and from 7 ft to 96 ft thick, containing, within the area drilled to date, some 20 million long tons of ore averaging 25% elemental sulphur in unconsolidated tuffaceous diatomaceous clay, overlain by about 120 ft of pumice sand and by the shallow Lake Rotokaua. An additional amount of perhaps 4 million tons of sulphur is regarded as probable in the area remaining to be drilled. Current economic studies cover the problems of mining an unconsolidated water-saturated formation with some residual thermal activity nearby; conservation and restoration after mining in a scenic recreation area; beneficiation of the ore and extraction of high- purity sulphur, principally for fertilizer manufacture. The deposit has additional importance as a pointer to possible further discoveries in the Thermal Region.\

Blasting has been the most frequently used method for rock breakage since black powder was first used to fragment rocks, more than two hundred years ago. This paper is an attempt to reassess standard design techniques used in blasting by providing an alternative approach to blast design. The new approach has been termed asymmetric blasting. Based on providing real time rock recognition through the capacity of measurement while drilling (MWD) techniques, asymmetric blasting is an approach to deal with rock properties as they occur in nature, ie randomly and asymmetrically spatially distributed. It is well accepted that performance of basic mining operations, such as excavation and crushing rely on a broken rock mass which has been pre conditioned by the blast. By pre conditioned we mean well fragmented, sufficiently loose and with adequate muckpile profile. These muckpile characteristics affect loading and hauling (Scott, 1996). The influence of blasting does not end there. Under the Mine to Mill paradigm, blasting has a significant leverage on downstream operations such as crushing and milling . There is a body of evidence that blasting affects mineral liberation (Djordjevic, N, 2001). Thus, the importance of blasting has increased from simply fragmenting and loosing the rock mass, to a broader role that encompasses many aspects of mining, which affects the cost of the end product. A new approach is proposed in this paper which facilitates this trend æto treat non-homogeneous media (rock mass) in a non-homogeneous manner (an asymmetrical pattern) in order to achieve an optimal result (in terms of muck-pile size distribution)Æ. It is postulated there are no logical reasons (besides the current lack of means to infer rock mass properties in the blind zones of the bench and onsite precedents) for drilling a regular blast pattern over a rock mass that is inherently heterogeneous. Real and theoretical examples of such a method are presented.

The Phoenix mine is one of NewmontÆs open-pit operations located in Nevada. Mining started in 2005, with the mine producing gold, copper and silver. The mine life is about 20 years. The gold grade estimation uses the Newmont in-house indicator kriging approach to handle the high variability in drill hole composite grades and support mining selectivity. Each block contains up to 200 subblocks with different gold grades. A flotation mill is designed to process oxide and sulfide ores, recovering gold, copper, and silver. An additional copper leach process is currently under study to process low gold and high copper oxide material with low copper recovery in the mill. The metallurgical recoveries and processing costs are dependent on many variables including rock formation, metallurgical domain, cyanide soluble copper and sulfide contents. This paper describes the Newmont in-house indicator kriging procedures and the revenue based mine planning software system implemented at Phoenix mine to address the complexity resulting from multi-process, multi-metal and indicator kriging model.

There is a well-known saying, variously attributed to the great King Solomon and other sages of antiquity, to the effect that 'there is nothing new under the sun'. The inventive genius of man, as far as it is personified in the metallurgist, has often had the truth of this statement poignantly brought to mind when investigating the priority of ideas in its own particular branch of science. Not infrequently some operation, at first inilocently taken for a novel procedure, has later been found to have had an irrefutable precedent in the more or less remote past.When confronted by a question of this kind the metallurgist can generally much simplify his search if he at once turns his scrutinising gaze towards that ancient home of metallurgy, Germany. Vast departments of the smelting art have originated there, and even when Germany has not been in position to claim priority of invention, it has at least been characterised by a distinction equally as worthy - ie that of the faithful and authoritative exposition of the theoretical grounds on which the invention rests.In the present instance, in endeavouring to trace the history of pyritic smelting, the writer has naturally turned in the abovementioned direction, and not without some result, although the recorded data are, as might have been expected, meagre. A complete history of the art of beneflciating ores by means of fire, in all its many ramifications, still remains to be written. Possibly it may never be written, for the extent of the subject is tremendous. It is even practically impossible to clearly trace the development of one of its most modest sub-branches in satisfactory detail, or to present that branch without going to a considerable extent into related matters of a merely general character. For the purpose of dealing with the subject it will be convenient to divide it into two concurrent heads, and to distinguish, for historical reasons as well as for metallurgical ones, between that branch of the general method of matte smelting, which, until about 1891, has been called 'pyritic smelting', and the more recent offshoot of the latter, which, by distinction, may be called 'pyrite smelting'. The nature of pyritic smelting was clearly defmed by Dr John Percy in 1880, and his interpretation3 may be accepted as well known. To recall the characteristics of the method we may perhaps paraphrase Dr Percy's meaning by describing the process as a special method for the smelting of lean or dry silver or gold ores, which do not contain sufficient lead or copper for these metals to act conveniently as collectors of the precious metals. The operation is conducted in a blast furnace, with an amount of carbonaceous fuel sufficing to produce an exclusively reducing atmosphere, and with the addition of pyrites, in order to form a regulus in which the precious metals shall be concentrated, the pyrites themselves being either argentiferous, auriferous, or cupriferous, or any combination of these three, or wholly barren of metal values. In the common acceptation of the term, it is understood that the use of the reverberatory furnace is excluded.

Four quartz latite rheoignimbrite units (units I to IV) mapped in the Goboboseb Mountains have been traced to their eruptive source, the Messum intrusive complex; this is a complex multistage ring structure (18 km diameter) with well defined gabbroic, monzonitic, and syenitic intrusive phases, and a central ring zone containing mixed rhyolitic to latitic agglomerates. Three of the four quartz latite units are correlated with the upper and lower (2 units) Springbok quartz latites outcropping some 90-130 km north of McIsum. This implies minimum volumes of 300-500 km for wits I and III (Lower Springbok) and 2200-2600 km for unit IV (Upper Springbok). This latter unit is still ti 300 m thick at its outcrop limit, some 130 km from Messum. Each of the four units represents single cooling units. Lithologically, each can be divided into three zones: A basal, dark grey to black flinty or glassy zone, often with highly attenuated fiamme (ressembling flow banding); a central massive and strongly recrystallised zone; and an upper variable zone which exhibit breccias, contorted flow banding, and amygdaloidal to pumiceous clasts. Their overall characteristics tend to be intermediate between ash flows and lava flows. The rheoignimbrites are interpreted as the oproducts of dense, high temperature (950¦-1100 C) ash flows which underwent rheomorphism and lava-like flow prior to their final cooling.These large scale eruptions are related to the initial rifting of Africa and S. America, possiby in response to a major hot spot.
