Cr-Ni-Cu¦PGE deposits are known to occur in early Archaean mafic-ultramafic rocks. Early Archaean mafic-ultramafic (MUMF) rocks occur in the western Dharwar craton and range in size from small pods to schist belts. These MUMF pods consist mainly of meta-peridotites, tremolite-actinolite schists, serpentinites, amphibolites and metabasalts. Spinifex, nodular and ocelli textures are also present. The rocks have been subjected to greenschist and amphibolite facies metamorphism. Geochemical studies were undertaken to evaluate the possible occurrence of economically important elements in the mafic-ultramafic enclaves around the major Arsikere-Tavarkere lineament and surrounding gneissic terrain adjoining local shear zones that occur as discontinuous pods between Arsikere and Chennagiri. Talc-serpentine and tremolite- actinolite schists contain chromite which is rimmed by ferrit-chromite. A notable feature of these MUMF rocks is that they exhibit high MgO (22 - 40 per cent), total iron (8.34 - 10.01 per cent), Ni and Cr (~3000, 2800 ppm) contents, with some samples showing komatiitic affinity. The rare earth elements (REE) data show slightly fractionated patterns with enriched LREE (LREE/HREE ~5.0) and negative europium anomalies. The Pt and Pd values reach 6500 and 191 ppb. The MUMF rocks, especially those exhibiting high chromium contents and occurring near shear zones, are potential hosts for economic platinum group element (PGE) deposits.

The impact of seismic loading on open pit slope stability in Australia is often only considered where the slopes are located adjacent to tailings facilities or other major infrastructure. The debate regarding application of seismic loading in open pit design in Australia is usually founded on limited reporting on significant damage of open pit operations during earthquakes, the common perception that earthquakes do not occur in Australia or that they are unlikely to occur during the mine life of the mine. It is frequently overlooked that pit slopes that have withstood strong earthquakes in highly active seismic regions are often designed under strict seismic guidelines. This paper discusses the factors that impact earthquake performance of open mine slopes. These factors include topography, slope geometry, rock material and mass properties, water management and intrinsic pit design. Further, the paper presents insights into the characteristics of earthquake activity in Australia such as magnitude distribution, earthquake depths, areas prone of earthquake activity and general seismic hazard that are relevant to pit design. Guidelines are provided on the conditions and circumstances under which earthquake design in open pit mining should be considered. In addition, this paper provides recommendation on the applicable methods for assessment of the impacts of earthquake loading on pit slope stability.

This paper discusses various issues surrounding the metallurgical control for furnaces, especially focusing on processes with long time-constants and æmetallurgical memoriesÆ. Examples will focus on furnaces accepting particulate and sometimes ill-defined feeds, eg submerged-arc furnaces, blast furnaces, secondary scrap smelting operations, recycling operations, waste incinerators, etc. Generally, because of the usually higher metallurgical time constant of these furnaces, these reactors have to be controlled in a feed-forward manner by the use of a hybrid of æblack boxÆ or empirical and ægrey boxÆ semi-empirical first principles metallurgical modelling and simulation techniques in a supervisory metallurgical control capacity.

During longwall mining in the Bowen Basin, open tension cracks formed by overburden subsidence occur to a height of about 175 m above the mining horizon. Within this zone, water in aquifers or inundated workings will flow into the mine.At the Oaky Creek mines Aquila seam, open cut pits containing pit water overlie German Creek seam longwall panels at a height of about 105 m. The highly saline water is classified as contaminated and cannot be discharged off-site. Because alternative water storage facilities were not available, innovative water management solutions were needed to allow longwall mining to proceed without underground flooding.Computer modelling and underground inflow measurements have been completed to accurately determine inflow rates into longwall mines from overlying water sources at increasing overburden heights. Research work has also included determining cost-effective blanket treatment of final voids and reshaping spoil piles to minimise downward seepage.Ponded water overlying the Aquila low, Grasstree south and A6 pits required remedial works prior to longwall undermining to prevent flooding. In the Aquila low pit it was necessary to partition the pit and remove water overlying longwall 32. Two in-pit bridges were constructed by dozing and track compacting low wall spoil. The final void above the longwall panel was kept dry during undermining. Maximum recorded underground inflow rate was 30.0 L/s.The Grasstree south pit final void, part of the ramp and much of the spoil piles were inundated prior to undermining of 308 panel. A bridge and blanket were required to prevent ponding above the longwall. Maximum recorded inflow during undermining was 23.2 L/s.The pit A6 south final void, which contained dumped, saturated rejects and inundated highwall mining entries was undermined by longwall 36 at the Oaky No 1 underground mine. Because mapping of highwall entries was not available, the maximum calculated inflow rate of 73.0 L/s was based on all design entries being fully inundated. The actual inflow rate during longwall mining ranged up to 20.0 L/s.Water management improvements that have been implemented include greater use of contaminated pit water to wash coal, use of evaporation fans, and installation of a 6 ML/day reverse osmosis plant for water purification.CITATION:Klenowski, G and Winter, S, 2017. Recent highly publicised incidences of disastrous containment failures, none more pertinent than the 2019 iron ore tailings dam failure in Brumadinho, have focused the world’s attention squarely on the often-challenging subject of tailings storage. Unwanted ultrafines, that are deemed to be unworthy of further treatment or not to have further saleable value, are therefore a significant issue for mine owners looking to reduce risks and perceptions associated with long-term storage of tailings. In this context, there are strong drivers to identify safer approaches to ultrafine tailings management, especially if it can also lead to increased revenue, together with better water stewardship and environmental outcomes. The better management of tailings needs to be considered from both containment challenge and processing opportunity perspectives. This paper focuses on the latter, reviewing from a technical and economic perspective, the feasibility of more extensive processing and/or reprocessing of specifically iron ore tailings, in a bid to reduce the overall volume for management in long-term storage. Herein the opportunity lies in recovery processing, as much as enhanced thickening and/or mechanical dewatering, and therefore the paper discusses both issues as equally important sides of the same coin. Recent interest in iron ore ultrafines processing and reprocessing studies suggests that the enhanced processing of iron ore tailings offers multiple perceived advantages. Apart from a potential reduction in tailings volume, associated with safer containment, lower environmental impact and improved water management, the prospect of increased revenue from additional Fe recovery presents supplementary motivation for iron ore players to embrace this approach, as further elaborated in this paper.

The Australian gold industry has made large steps forward in the last few years. This progress has been driven by improvements in mining and processing technology, the high price of gold and by a favourable legislative, political and taxation environment. This paper concentrates on improvements in gold project development, process engineering and technology as seen by BHP Engineering, Perth, Australia. The paper describes technical aspects of successful gold project development including metallurgical test work, feasibility studies, choice of process flow sheet (gravity, heap leach, carbon in pulp (CIP), carbon in leach (CIL) or other routes). It sets out our views on plant design, plant construction, procurement and project management. A case study for a small plant recently completed in the Philippines is presented as a solution to the problems often encountered in treating quartz vein gold deposits.

This paper presents a resume of the likely profitable mining areas in New Zealand. It covers the main 'minerals' û gold, coal, oil and gas, ironsands, silica sands, clays, lump silica, perlite, sulphur and limestone. The potential mining projects are depicted on a map of New Zealand together with the associated works involved in hydro-electric and geothermal power development requirement for industries such as aluminium, nickel ferro-silicon or silicon carbide production. The political need for mining development to relieve unemployment and reverse emigration is stressed. A case is made for exploration and development assistance by government in labour re-training, energy supply and transportation, if the tremendous losses through lack of use of human and industrial resources are to be rapidly reduced. These losses are currently estimated at $10 000 000 000 per year. The need for protection of the sanctity of contract and security of tenure of all mining operations is touched on briefly as is the need for a reasonably balanced view on conservation. However, as both of these are more properly covered in papers on the legal and environmental aspects of the mining climate, they are presented here only as they affect the economy of the mining operation. Finally, there is a brief comment on the mining climate in New Zealand relative to Australia and South Pacific mining operations.

Space-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is becoming available over much of the world, includingNew Zealand. Radar imagery has a number of very advantageous features, including all-weather capability; it also has artifacts, such as layover, which require processing before these data may be used to best effect.   This paper gives an outline of SAR, details the image processing required, and discusses the use of the first New Zealand Japan Earth Resources-1 SAR data to aid geological mapping on the Coromandel Peninsula.

The great problem at Port Pirie and many other lead smelters has always been to keep the lead content of the slags down to a low level. This has been done in the past largely by empirical methods, the lead content varying from less than 1 per cent to over 4 per cent, the more usual figure being something under 2 per cent. Subsidiary to this, but of major importance in the future, was the extraction of the considerable quantities of zinc in the slag. At this stage little was known about the constitution of the slags apartfrom their chemical composition. Some early work on slag constitution was carried out in the B.H.A.S. Research Laboratories between 1919 and 1921, but except for a microscopic examination of a few thin sections the greater part of this investigation wasdevoted to the recovery of the zinc content of the slag by leaching methods.In 1949, therefore, it was decided to initiate a programme of fundamental research into the constitution and properties of the lead blast furnace slags. The information thus gained would give a clearer picture of reactions taking place in the slag, both in the blast furnace and during dezincing.There was also the hope that these results would lead to improved industrial techniques resulting in smaller lead losses, and, taking the long-term view, to efficient methods of producing zinc from the slags.A series of investigations was therefore begun at various centres over a period of time. Ensuring that diesel particulate matter (DPM) levels in underground metal and non-metal mines are maintained below statutory limits is an essential requirement of mine ventilation systems. However, despite the cost of providing ventilation, air ventilation rates are usually based upon models, assumptions, or measurements integrated over long durations rather than actual need. Real-time measurement of DPM, interpreted in terms of mine activity schedules, can offer better ventilation management to keep DPM within regulated levels while controlling costs. This work presents data from three demonstration sites with in-mine applications of an environmental particulate sensor that measured black carbon (BC) as a surrogate for DPM.Aethalometers are a class of environmental monitors that measure the light absorbance of aerosol particles at several optical wavelengths. A model AE33 Aethalometer was operated in three separate mines for periods of two weeks, three months, and seven-plus months, and the data was reported in real time as a concentration of BC. Concentration of aromatic organic compounds, which can indicate other forms of combustion, was also reported. The data was used to:- measure the relative efficiency of a new scale-model DPM air scrubber- determine if ventilation could be reduced in a shotcrete loading facility without compromising air quality- evaluate diurnal and weekly DPM levels in a large-entry stone mine. Instrument data were displayed locally and stored for later downloading in all cases. In one mine, the instrument was connected to a local controller, and in another it was connected to the mine’s underground network so that DPM data was presented in real time to a display in the mine ventilation engineering office on the surface.The results showed that the air scrubber removes from 82 per cent to 95 per cent of the DPM; that DPM produced during shotcrete loading is only a minor part of overall DPM levels; and that wide variations in DPM levels exist in the limestone operation. The DPM monitor operated continuously for extended periods in these underground environments. The only maintenance required was the routine replacement of filter tape, typically on a two-week schedule. A sample diluter, which is currently being tested, could extend the intervals between filter changes. The Bega granite at Whipstick, N.S.W., consists of a granite metasomatically altered to leucogranites and a spessartite-granite. The ore occurs in pipes controlled by jointing and shows evidence of post-depositional tectonic forces.The principal ore minerals are molybdenite and bismuthinite, with minor amounts of uraninite, pyrite, gold, bismuth, joseite A, joseite B, tetradymite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and skutterudite. The gangue minerals are microcline, albite, quartz, muscovite, and spessartite, with fluorite, chlorite, magnetite, and biotite as accessory minerals.The intrusion of granite was followed initially by ascending metasomatic fluids which penetrated along joints to be trapped in the domed roof of the intrusion to form the leucocratic granite. Iron-manganese-rich fluids metasomatically altered the granite to a spessartitegranite which is associated with the later deposited ore.Quartz veins and dykes of varying composition post date the ore deposition.

Gold mineralisation at Porgera is inferred to have been derived from a deep differentiated magmatic source which is capped by a series of (now tilted) inward dipping sills and stocks, which comprise the Porgera Intrusive Complex. An arc normal transfer structure provides a conduit, at tile intersection with an arc parallel structure, into which basic magma derived from tile deep melting of mantle material has been emplaced. Two phases of mineralisation display an association with late stage feldspar porphyry intrusives. Stage I carbonate-base metal-style gold mineralisation occurs as early quartz-sericite, then massive sulphide and late zoned Mn-Fe-Mg-Ca carbonate vein/breccias. Magmatic fluids derived from the deep magma source, are interpreted to have migrated along me margin of a feeder stock to the sills, and south to Waruwari. Stage II epithermal Au-Ag quartz-style gold mineralisation occurs as early fluidised breccias and carbonate veining, followed by zoned quartz-roscoelite-carbonate-gold vein/breccias, and late carbonate and/or sulphate open space infill. Magmatic fluids are interpreted to have utilised the same plumbing system as the late stage feldspar porphyry intrusive, and then migrated into the Roamane Fault which was dilated by; dextral rotation on elements of the transfer structure, normal faulting, and refraction around the competent footwall hornblende diorite. Bonanza gold is localised in a jog in the Roamane Fault, hangingwall splits and at intersections with cross structures. Bulk low grade Stage I gold has been deposited by the mixing of magmatic fluids with cool gas condensate waters, whereas high grade Stage II gold mineralisation resulted from the rapid quenching of mineralised magmatic fluids by oxygenated groundwaters.

This paper presents the near-field rock damage owing to production blasting in limestone quarry in the western region of Japan. The study's purpose is to learn the mechanism of crack development due to blast vibration. In this study, blast vibration's magnitude was expressed with peak particle velocity (PPV) which was obtained based on seismographs recorded database. In attempt to pursue a research's purpose of this study, there were two considerable interests: near-field blast vibration propagation and prediction, and crack observed and prediction. Furthermore, with regards to considerable interest of the study, there were three essential aspects which were challenged, such as: monitoring and interpretation of seismic wave propagation in a rock mass near large explosive charge of production blast scale, measurement of blast rock damage in adjacent to blasthole, and determine critical value of PPV which may produce significant rock damage. In order to determine precision critical PPV, understanding correlation between rock damage with vibration level is firstly important to be done. This paper also discusses how to measure, detect and quantify near-field blast vibration and blast rock damage in adjacent to blasthole.

Detailed mineralogical investigation of a tailing sample from the Juno plant circuit at Tennant Creek was carried out to determine the nature of the unrecovered bismuth and whether any possibility existed for improving bismuth recovery. The investigation showed that the Ibismuth was present in a complex mixture of Bi-Pb-Ou-Se-S minerals (termed "bismuthinite"), of which about 74 per cent was locked (mainly with magnetite) and 26 per cent was liberated (18 per cent in the minus 7 µm slime). The results suggested that attention should be directed to both finer grinding and improved flotation of slime "bismuthinite", and testwork carried out by Peko Mines N.L. on the basis of these recommendations led to a significant improvement in bismuth recovery.Detailed mineralogical investigation of two Juno concentrates was carried out to determine the nature of the selenium present and whether any possibility existed for improving the selenium grade. The investigation indicated that virtqally all the bismuth, selenium, and lead was present in "bismuthinite", which showed a composition range of 32-82 per cent Bi, 0-42 per cent Pb, 0-24 per cent Se, and 5-18 per cent S. Differences in the Bi/Se ratios of the two concentrates could be attributed to different average Bi/Se ratios of the constituent "bismuthinite", and the relatively low selenium grade of the "bismuthinite" precluded the possibility of obtaining a high grade selenium concentrate with high selenium recovery.However, differential flotation and/or low intensity magnetic separation to remove chakopyrite, and magnetite, the main diluents of the concentrate, could be expected to upgrade the selenium content byup to 80 per cent (relative) and .festwork carried out by Peko Mines N.L. on the basis of the recommendations of the mineralogical investigation confirmed that depression of chalcopyrite in the flotation circuit could produce significantly improved selenium grades.These investigations illustrate the application of mineralogy to the practical problems of improving plant performance. Mineralogy has an important role to play in providing quantitative data on which the metallurgist can evaluate plant performance and base a programme of metallurgical testwork, and early mineralogical investigation of feeds, concentrates, middlings, and tailings can lead to the avoidance of much abortive and expensive metallurgical testwork.

This study of the tin-tungsten ore of the Shepherd and Murphy Mine, in central northern Tasmania, was originally undertaken at the request of the Moina Tungsten-Tin Mining Co., N.L., as part of the research programme of the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of the C.S.I.R.O. It is based on the examination of a suite of specimens supplied by the management, supplemented by a more extensive collection and observations made by the author during a short visit to the mine in October, 1956.The Shepherd and Murphy Mine is at Moina, 36 miles S.W. of Devonport and 22 miles from Sheffield, the nearest railway station. It was worked almost· continuously from 1893 to 1919, when a fire destroyed the mill; to that date it had produced concentrates to the value of £141,000. After a long period of idleness, the mine was re-opened by the present company, but it has been announced recently that unfavourable market conditions have again forced closure.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe mine is on a deeply dissected plateau, about 2,500 ft. above sea level; it lies between the Iris and the Forth Rivers, whose valleys are deep gorges cut to about 400 to 600 ft. above sea level. From Moina westwards to the Iris River, a limestone regarded as part of the Gordon River Group, of Ordovician age, conformably overlies a sandstone containing tubicolar casts which are circular in cross section, half an inch in diameter and up to two feet long, and which resemble marine worm burrows (Elliston, 1953).

BUCKETT (Lake View and Star Limited) : At the outset I should like to add my congratulations to those already extended to Mr..Norwood on his excellent paper, which has given us all an inspiration to strive further to improve our plant recoveries. In some respects this paper has left us so little to discuss without considerable time spent on. further research work. At all points one is met by a baffling array of facts which leave one feeling hesitant to speak.The careful and methodical way in which Mr. Norwood went along step by step until all channels of research presenting themselves were tested to his own satisfaction leaves me with but a few comments to make. Particularly striking to me is the explanation of the residual gold values in calcines by recrystallization of haematite and here is a line to be attacked by future studies. This will be mentioned again later.Particularizing on the paper, the first point that struck me was the method of change of pyrite through to the final haematite. I have never been able to satisfy myself that a sample taken from various positions along a roaster when cooled, as described on p. 397, represented a fair sample of the conditions at that point, but I must confess that I have not found a substitute that did satisfy me.However, the following figures are illuminating... But to fill dry a receptacle of known volume with calcines, as described by Mr. Norwood, gives the following apparentspecific gravities:

The early development patterns of both Australia and New Zealand were substantially in parallel and both were heavily indebted to gold mining for, providing the stimulus to growth. However, since the mining boom, of 1895 - 1899, the mining sector in New Zealand has progressively declined, while in Australia it has assumed an increasing importance in the economy. The continued dominance of minerals in Australian trade, and the fact that eight out of the top ten companies in Australia are directly involved in mineral exploration and production, has strongly influenced government and public attitude's to the minerals sector. Although the legal framework of mining and exploration Acts and Regulations are similar it is in, the method of administration, particularly in regard to exploration and prospecting licences, that the gulf across, the Tasman is apparent. Despite the relative ease of application and granting of licences in Australia, in the more settled south eastern part of the continent we are finding more and more land is being zoned unavailable for exploration. In the remote areas, the Aboriginals now control nearly ten per cent of the land area of Australia, virtually with drawing that portion from exploration. The concept of 'Australianisation' has softened a hardening attitude against foreign investment in mining on the part of the bureaucracy. This anti-mining attitude is fortunately, not shared by the public, and we can but hope that the will of the Australian people can filter through to our masters in Canberra, and ease the rapid increase in the number of regulatory bodies which does so much to inhibit the normal conduct of business. The delays caused by interminable hearings and committee investigations all cost money. This cost can only rebound back on the end consumer, who after all is a voter.
