This paper describes a proposal to reopen the Sylvia gold mine for underground exploration and development for an initial production of 10 000 tpa. A combination of trackless mining equipment and railtrack would be utilised for development with ore extraction being carried out by undercut and fill methods. The use of the smallest LHD units for mucking, and rail track for the main haulage together with airleg drilling will form the basis for development and stoping. The proposal has been subjected to an environmental impact assessment report to evaluate the impacts of the proposal on the natural and social environment in the area.

Eh-pH measurements were taken on an industrial zinc reverse flotation process at Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited. Laboratory zinc reverse flotation testwork on samples of the feed to the industrial process produced Eh-pH data which were similar to the data from the industrial process.Later, the Eh-pH data from the industrial process were compared with data from a pilot plant scale zinc reverse flotation process at Mount Isa Mines Limited. After comparison with the data from Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation, deficiencies in the pilot plant Eh-pH data could be recognised and corrective actions were taken for the pilot plant. A robust pilot plant zinc reverse flotation process was obtained with consistent performance at the expected level.The implications of these findings for a range of processes are also discussed.

Process Options for Difficult Arid-Region Nickel Laterites In the absence of the discovery of significant nickel sulfide deposits, the future of Australia's nickel industry will increasingly depend on cost effect processes for low-grade nickel laterites. The problems encountered with the West Australian HPAL plants, resulting in three of the four plants being shut down, have caused the industry to revisit atmospheric leaching options, particularly heap leaching. West Australian laterites are characteristically very varied in grade, chemical composition and mineralogy with the result that, thus far, one process does not fit all laterites. In this paper the leaching of an especially refractory ore is compared using column leaching of whole ore and atmospheric leaching and HPAL processing of ground ore. The key characteristic is the resistance of the goethite phase to acid attack with low-to-moderate temperature leaching conditions. The refractory characteristic is attributed to the stabilising influence of chromium and aluminium and possibly manganese substitution in the goethite crystal structure and goethite morphology. A significant three-fold increase in both nickel and cobalt extractions under atmospheric leaching conditions was achieved by the relatively simple modification of bubbling sulfur dioxide into the reaction vessel to create a reducing environment. Recoveries increased from <30 per cent to 90 per cent nickel and 86 per cent cobalt after 10 hours of leaching at 95¦C. An even greater improvement was achieved under ambient conditions by heating the ore to temperatures above 250¦C for 30 minutes. Subsequent leaching at ambient temperature gave an eight-fold increase in both nickel and cobalt recoveries after 14 days bottle rolling. Both methods could be optimised and implemented in such a way as to increase laterite reserves in conjunction with a heap leach operation but may be better suited to vat or closed tank processing.

Spectrum Resources commenced operations as a public listed mining company in August, 1983, with a variety of precious metal projects in New Zealand. At that time the outlook for most mineral commodities, with the notable exception of precious metals, was decidedly gloomy. Metal prices were depressed and demand forecasts were universally gloomy. Against this background the company reviewed the non-traditional metals sector to try and identify a 'new' metal with an above average demand growth and market value. Lithium, a commodity with exciting new applications in storage batteries and alloys, met both criteria. Annual world consumption of lithium is around 7000 tonnes; current prices are around $NZ40/lb for lithium metal and demand growth is projected at five to seven per cent per annum. Geothermal fluids at Wairakei and elsewhere contain anomalous amounts of lithium and in May, 1984, the Chemistry Division of DSIR was commissioned to carry out a literature survey on the possible recovery of lithium and other minerals from geothermal waters. The survey results were encouraging and the company subsequently negotiated exclusive access rights, for research purposes, to geothermal discharge fluids from the Wairakei and Kawerau geothermal fluids. Most of the subsequent investigations reported here were carried out by Chemistry Division, DSIR, under contract to the company with some assistance from the Industrial Processing Division, DSIR.

At its Port Kembla Plant, Australian Fertilizers Ltd. manufactures Superphosphate and other Phosphatic Fertilizers.Phosphate Rock is received from Nauru and Ocean Island. It contains water insoluble tri-calcium phosphate, Ca3(PO4), to an average of about 86%.It is crushed to pass a 20-mesh x 26-gauge woven wire screen, and is then treated with Sulphuric Acid to give the product Superphosphate with a water solubie prosphate content of 20.5%, estimated as P205. Sulphuric Acid is made by the chamber process. Three sets of chambers are installed, on,e five-chamber set of timber frame work construction and the other two of more recent date, each with four chambers of steel frame work construction. A fourth chamber set is now being built.Sulphuric Acid is delivered for use. at about 70% H2S04, the strength depending upon the rock used.Mixing - The crushed rock and sulphuric acid are mixed in weighed and measured proportions respectiyely in one-ton batches in revolving cast fron pans, mechanically stirred. The mixture, while still slurry, is run into a closed horizontal concrete cylinder (den) where, with the completion of the chemical reaction, it rapidly sets as Superphosphate.Approximately fifty batches are required to fill a den. When full, the den is opened ana the mass cut out by a revolving cutter. The product is elevated and conveyed to any required position in the Superphosphate storage shed, where it dries and matures.Despatch - As required, the Superphosphate is excavated by a two ton grab and conveyed from the matured "dump" to bagging units where it is disintegrated, screened and bagged at twelve bags to the ton. The filled !Jags are closed by machine and delivered to railway trucks immediately.Mixed Fertilizers - Sulphate of Ammonia, Sulphate and Muriate, of Potash, and Blood and Bone are mixed with Superphosphate and thoroughly incorporated to give different mixtures to meet special plant requirements.

Gold is extracted by cyanidation of a sulphide-rich concentrate at Macraes mine, and after cyanidation, the concentrate is discharged to tailings impoundments. The concentrate tailings were discharged to a dedicated concentrate impoundment from 1989 to 1993, afterwhich they were blended with the flotation tailings. Since mid-1998, concentrate tailings have been redirected to the dedicated concentrate impoundment. The concentrate tailings contain up to 1 ppm gold, and will be reprocessed in the future. However, it is a regulatory requirement that a contingency plan be in place to rehabilitate the concentrate tailings should the mine operation cease for any reason. Initial predictions suggested that the sulphide-rich tailings would oxidise and acidify, creating a potential long term environmental problem. Investigations of the state of the tailings after 4 years show that these predictions were overly conservative. Only minor oxidation has occurred in the upper 2 metres of the tailings where the pH has locally dropped from 10 (discharge condition) to between 7 and 8. Below 2 metres, the tailings are essentially unchanged from their deposition state. The low rate of change in the tailings is due to their very low permeability which in turn is a consequence of the fine grain size (ca. 15 ¦m). Dewatering is extremely slow, and incursion of oxygenated water is negligible. Calculations suggest that water movement over 30 m will take at least 100 years and possibly 1000 years. The contingency plan is to capitalise on the very low permeability and keep the tailings from drying with a semipermeable cap. A layer of limestone will be added to the top of the tailings, beneath the cap, to enhance alkalinity of any percolating water. If acidification does occur, contrary to expectations, any acid produced will be neutralised by underlying calcite-bearing schist, schist in the concentrate impoundment wall, and the flotation tailings immediately downstream. In addition, dilution by alkaline ground and surface waters would further ameliorate any acidic discharge.

The Cadia Hill Gold Mine, located near Orange in Central Western New South Wales, is owned and operated by Cadia Holdings Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited. Construction including pre-strip mining occurred from 1996 to 1998. The mine was officially opened in October 1998 following commissioning of the concentrator and mine fleet in June of that year. The Cadia Hill orebody is a porphyry related gold and copper system. The final pit has a strip ratio of approximately 1.3:1.0. Mining is undertaken on 15 metre benches using large capacity diesel hydraulic face shovels at an annualised rate of up to 70 Mtpa. The concentrator is currently rated at 17Mtpa and includes the worldÆs largest single line grinding circuit. The feasibility Mineral Resource was estimated at 352 Mt at 0.63 g/t Au and 0.17 per cent Cu. Initial reserves totalled 200 Mt at 0.74 g/t Au and 0.17 per cent Cu yielding a mine life of approximately 12 years. During the pre-production period mine geology systems were developed to support the operation. By design these systems were intended to add value to the business through minimisation of material miss-classification, provision of accurate and timely production information and mapping and reconciliation as a continuous model improvement tool. Variances that would prove to be material to the life of mine plan were recognised during the first year of production. These included identification of additional ore tonnes, higher copper grades and higher gold recoveries relative to the model. Gold grades and copper recoveries also reconciled favourably. Testwork was undertaken to determine the underlying causes of each variance. Re-modelling was then undertaken to capitalise on those variances. The Cadia Hill Gold Mine life of mine plan was re-evaluated with updated geology, grade, geotechnical, metallurgical and environmental inputs. Operating strategies were also reviewed and revised. Despite application of reduced metal prices in the evaluation, the outcome was one of extended mine life with more metal produced at lower cost. Development of robust mine geology systems, including a pro-active reconciliation process contributed to tangible improvement of the Cadia Hill Gold Mine operation. On-going system development and improvement initiatives are planned to add further value for the future.

A Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) was developed by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) at its head office in Melbourne. It is one of the computer mine planning systems developed by the Corporate Data Processing (CDP) section of BHP. To date it has been employed in the feasibility study of four coal prospects for the BHP Group, including Gregory in central Queensland û Ham and Van Hoorn (1978). It was also used in detailed short term mine planning for Gregory. A recent application was in the feasibility study of Saxonvale, a multi seam coal deposit in New South Wales with seams up to 20 m thick. The other two applications of SUMPS were also on thick multi seam coal deposits. Development of programs for the underground subsection of SUMPS is continuing. SUMPS was developed and implemented on mini computers with graphics and plotting peripherals. The company's philosophy towards computing is one of centralized development and project planning, with transfer of hardware and software to site once the mine becomes operational. Support of the site's system continues from head office which is continually involved in development of SUMPS and issuing revision updates to sites. The users, as well as programmers, were mostly geologists and mining engineers. This helped to ensure rapid, successful implementation. The broad approach of this system was to use interactively the specialist skills and interpretative abilities of the user mining engineers and geologists with the data manipulation abilities of the computer. It is an integrated system which covers geological exploration, deposit modelling, mine planning and production scheduling. An important feature of the system is that the user has full interactive control over each function through a graphics terminal where applicable.

To achieve an efficient separation in the flotation process, valuable particles need to be selectively segregated from the gangue while utilising a minimum number of flotation stages. TodayÆs existing flotation technologies are effective for fine particle size classes; however, limitations due to particle buoyancy and bubble-particle detachment restrict the effectiveness of traditional flotation approaches on coarser particles. As a result, flotation circuits are generally configured to process only fine particle size classes in order to maximise recovery in the primary stages. Eriez has invented a novel flotation technology, the HydroFloat, which overcomes these limitations by carrying-out flotation in a dense, fluidised-bed medium allowing for the recovery of coarse particles (>0.250 mm). Over the last 15 years, this technology has been successfully applied to industrial minerals with several full-scale units installed to recover particles up to and exceeding 3 mm diameter in primary flotation circuits. This paper includes discussions on the history of this technology, process theory, existing applications, and a review of recent sulphide-based laboratory test work conducted for Newcrest mining and others. Benefits of this approach, such as improved recovery, low energy consumption and reduced reagent addition will also be reviewed.CITATION:Kohmuench, J, Thanasekaran, H and Seaman, B, 2013. Geostatistical methods have become well established in the last two decades for the evaluation of ore reserves in base metal, industrial minerals, coal and gold deposits of the Witwatersrand type. However, there has been considerable debate about the applicability of geostatistical techniques when applied to vein-type gold deposits with hydro or epithermal mineralisation. The main problems stem from a lack of spatial continuity and the highly erratic sample values that characterise these deposits. This paper reviews some of the current geostatistical techniques that are applied to the evaluation of gold prospects.

Removal of As(III) and As(V) in Aqueous Solution There are toxic arsenical species such as As(III) and As(V), and arsenious species have specially strong toxicity. The strong toxicity causes contamination of groundwater and water pollution for the semiconductor production process. This study is concerned with the removal of As(III) and As(V) with various kinds of Mg/Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) containing CO32-, SO42-, Cl- and NO3- as interlayer anionic species. The anion exchange property is different from the kind of layered double hydroxides and the Mg-Al-NO3-LDH is superior in the anion exchange property of As(III) and As(V) due to the nature of nitrate ion existing in the interlayer. The pH condition suitable for As(V) removal is 7.1 or more. If the initial conditions such as 10mg/dm3 of As(V) concentration, 7.1 of pH, 1 m3 of amount of solution and 99 per cent of removal are fixed, the required amount of Mg-Al-NO3-LDH is 0.27kg for two step-batch operations. The As(III) is suitable to oxidize to As(V) before the removal processing.

In-field sampling programs generally take time, equating to money, and unless you have an onsite laboratory, you have the issue of having to wait long periods for your data. Until recently, field portable X-ray fl uorescence (FPXRF) analysers, which can help provide instant indicative results, were not able to detect penalty elements, such as Al and Si, or do so reliably enough to act upon.The purpose then of this field test then was to show that the latest FPXRF devices are capable of producing reliable readings on field samples of variable grain size, in particular for Al and Si, such that the readings still correlate well with the assay for those samples and thus be reliable for an iron ore grade control application.We tested RC chip samples on-site in the Pilbara, Western Australia, with the Niton, analysing for a range of elements including Fe, Mn, Al and Si and then compared the results for those elements against assay data for the same. A strong correlation would tell us that the FPXRF results were reliable. Furthermore, to show the effect of simple sample preparation, we also analysed pulps of the same samples in the same way.The correlations were good for the all of the four elements of interest for the RC chip samples (R2 values between 0.82 and 0.9), and excellent for the pulps (R2 values between 0.89 and 0.998).The results also showed a direct correlation between sample preparation and improved quality of results with the FPXRF.The data showed allowed for two conclusions:1. the FPXRF can produce data from unprepared RC chips for Al and Si that, when compared with assay, is reliable for a fi eld application in drilling and grade control; and2. the greatest limitation to data quality is sample preparation.

In order to reveal the correlation between the fundamental sintering characteristics of iron ores and their real sintering behaviours, a comprehensive evaluation index is proposed based on the measurement of four high temperature indexes, ie assimilation temperature, liquid phase bonding strength, liquid fluidity and calcium ferrite formation percentage, and the sintering pot tests of single ore fines and their blends. The results show that both the lowest assimilation temperature and liquid fluidity of ore blends appear to be the linear superposition of those of single iron ores except for the liquid phase bonding strength and calcium ferrite formation percentage. Furthermore, the tumble index of the sinter product obtained from blended iron ores also corresponds to a linear superposition of that of single ores, but not for the solid fuel rate and productivity. The comprehensive strength index YT exhibits a credible linear positive correlation with the four high temperature reactivity indexes, whereas the comprehensive productivity index YP possesses a lower correlation with the four high temperature reactivity indexes. The comprehensive strength index YT developed can predict the tumble index of the sinter product quite well, but the comprehensive productivity index YP cannot be used to evaluate the productivity effectively.CITATION:Zhu, D Q, Xue, Y X, Pan, J and Shi, B J, 2017. The minerals industry in Australia is currently regarded as the country's economic saviour; the bastion of economic security. As Fitzgerald (1974) stated, 'Australia's natural endowments in minerals are the envy of most countries of the world'. As a result the proposed new mineral developments are on a scale that hitherto in the sixties would have been completely un-envisaged. It is reported that Australia is poised on the verge of a 16 billion dollar mining-based investment boom: a boom that will see Australia dominate the energy export field, the mineral processing field, and create the 'coal dollar'. This growth scenario has many inherent dangers, and it is the authors' contention that these should be carefully considered before further development proceeds. Two of the major problems related to the mineral industry growth scenario are the predictability of the future metal market, and the energy cost of mining. The latter problem is the one discussed here. The mining-mineral processing industries in Australia currently use about 36 per cent of Australia's primary energy budget. This large energy input is dominated by two major industries, iron and steel and the rapidly developing a1uminium industry. These two combined use over 20 per cent of the total Australian energy budget. In an industry which is export oriented about 96 per cent as expressed in ex-mine value terms û much of the energy input is exported along with the product. The authors therefore urge that serious consideration by the mineral industry be given to the relatively high energy intensiveness of process operations, especially in respect of the aluminium industry.

The zinc-lead lode at Rosebery, on the West coast of Tasmania, has a total length of over 4000 ft. It consists of five elongated lenses parallel to the foliation planes of the quartz sericite schist, and is situated at the junction of the quartz sericite schist and a thin belt of slate. The lenses consist of massive, fine grained sulphide ore, with small amounts of quartz, barite, sericite and chlorite, and they terminate in masses of low grade ore. The gangue minerals increase in quantity in the low grade ore which includes small quantities of the manganese garnet, spessartite. The schist walls of the lenses are in places impregnated with lode minerals to a degree sufficient to permit them to be regarded as economic ore.The ore-bodies have developed from incoming mineral solutions by the replacement of the quartz sericite schist and are localised where the ore solutions have been confined by a relatively impervious slate band. The early stages of replacement of the schists are signified by the development of pyritic bands which are succeeded by a strong development of zinc blende. With ptogressive crystallisation, the character of the mineral solutions gradually changed and the development of galena, and its associated bournonite, became more important in the later stages.Remnants of the replaced schist, in the form of isolated wisps and schlieren of sericite and chlorite, are present in the ore body, more noticeably in the pyritic specimens. An important feature of the ore is the association of small ogllantities of gold with trahedrite.

In this work, preheating and roasting tests of pellets made from blends of Western Australia ultra-fine (WAU) magnetite concentrate and Chinese domestic magnetite concentrate or Brazilian hematite concentrate were carried out. The results showed that pellets made from 100 per cent WAU magnetite concentrate possesses inferior preheating and roasting performance when preheating at 1050°C for 20 minutes and roasting at 1300°C for 40 minutes, the compressive strength of preheated and fired pellets is 502 N/pellet and 2313 N/pellet, respectively. When 40 per cent Chinese domestic magnetite concentrate or 20 per cent Brazilian hematite concentrate was blended with 60 per cent or 80 per cent WAU magnetite concentrate, the appropriate preheating temperature of the pellets are reduced from 1050°C to 950°C and 975°C, and also the firing temperature of two types pellets are decreased from 1300°C to 1250°C and 1280°C respectively. Moreover, the compressive strength of fired pellets is obviously improved up to 2746 N/pellet and 2630 N/pellet respectively. Microstructure analysis of the fired pellets made from 100 per cent WAU shows its poor growth of Fe2O3 grains, low interlinkage degree of hematite grains, small size of crystallised grains and high porosity of pellet; however, the fired pellets that blended with domestic magnetite concentrate or with Brazilian hematite concentrate have fully growth of Fe2O3 grains, closer interlinkage of hematite grains, lower porosity and stronger consolidation.
