The kinetics of sulfation of single crystals of lead sulfide to lead sulfate have been studied between 969" and 1073°K in gas atmospheres of known composition using a thermobalance technique. The data are described by an equation derived on the basis that diffusion outward through the Product layer is the major controlling step. The rate of sulfation is linearly related to the logarithm of the sulfur trioxide partial DESPITE its industrial significance the oxidation of lead sulfide has received limited attention. The oxidation reactions have been studied using beds, briquettes, single crystals, or thin films of lead sulfide. Lead oxide and lead sulfate (PbSO,) were formed when Mclntoshl and Gardner2 roasted beds of galena pressure and the temperature coefficient of reaction is 40 ± 5 kcal per g mole. Gold marker experiments show that the sulfate layer grows by outward movement of ions through the sulfate layer. Initially the PbSO, adheres to the PbS but later forms an irnpewious spheroidal envelope; PbS vaporizes and pb2' ions diffuse through the envelope to react at the external surface. in air at temperatures up to 800°C. In a more extensive investigation, Tchizhykov3 obtained Pb, PbO, and PbS04 in accordance with Eqs. [1] to [4], when a bed of -200 mesh galena was oxidized in O2-N2 mixtures at 700° to 900°C.

A WIDE Variety of metallurgical defects in steel have commonly been attributed to the presence of excessive amounts of hydrogen. These defects include flakes in rails and forgings, cracks in welds, and blisters in enameled ware, They have been related to hydrogen largely by circumstantiat evidence because the proper sampling and analysis of steel for hydrogen has been known to be difficult and because no general agreement has existed with regard to the relative suitability and accuracy of available methods. The need for a direct approach to these problems has been widely recognized. This general situation has been well described in the publications of the British committee on the Heterogeneity of Steel Ingots,' and current approaches to the problem were reviewed in a recent symposium of the AIME.I2 The plans described by the present authors at that meeting have now matured satisfactorily and will form the basis of this paper. The principal object of this paper will be to describe the methods of sampling and analysis which have been developed and to illustrate the usefulness and limitations of these methods by citing their application to a specific problem, The first problem selected for investigation was the behavior of hydrogen in rail steel. This was chosen because the occurrence of shatter cracks in rails has received a great deal of study over a long period of time. The defect can be controlled by the expensive procedure of slow in However, it may be hoped that a better understanding of the factors influencing the hydrogen content of rails will lead to a more efficient control of this problem. Rails provide a good starting point for a more general study of hydrogen in steel because they provide a cross-section large enough to develop cracks, Yet small enough for convenient handling and sampling. Rails were also selected because they arc made from plain carbon steel and it was felt that the initial work should not be complicated by the effects introduced by alloying elements. The considerations which determined the original planning of this study should be reviewed. The inherently complex nature of most hydrogen problems requires that a large amount of data must be collected for any particular case. This in turn means that any analytical procedure should be as rapid and simple as possible. The same objective of speed is indicated by the fact that it may finally become desirable to use hydrogen analysis in process control. It is also known that hydrogen is highly fugitive and that any procedure which facilitat~s early analysis of the sample without prolonged or irregular storage has distinct advantages. The most important previously reported methods of analysis may be classified into three general groups: (I) Vacuum fusion, (2) Vacuum extraction (without melting), (3) Total combustion.

Generation of Waves by storms, and the transformation of waves in shallow water by local bottom topography are briefly reviewed. A detailed description of water motion in waves explains the nature and distribution of wave forces. A numerical example dealing with forces and moments against vertical piles summarizes the principles involved. Introduction The oil industry is moving into the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The design and construction of offshore drilling rigs present a number of difficult problems, among them problems involving the action of waves on fixed and floating structures. This paper deals with our present knowledge of ocean waves as it pertains to these problems, and the principles involved in computing wave forces against fixed structures. It is hoped that the more difficult case pertaining to floating structures can be discussed at a later time. None of the engincering aspects of the problem are entered upon in this paper, yet an understanding of the principles presented here should be helpful in the solution of practical problems. Waves are capable of exerting almost unbelievable forces. During a gale, waves at the harbor entrance of Amsterdam Canal in Holland lifted a 20-ton concrete block, which was resting on the bottom in 12ft of water, and deposited it on top of a pier which was 5 ft above the high water mark. At Wick Breakwater in Scotland, a mass of large stones in cement and bound together with iron rods, weighing 1350 tons, was broken loose and moved bodily! But one need not go to Holland or Scotland to find evidence of damage that waves are capable of inflicting (Fig I and 2). What is the mechanism by which waves are capable of exerting such enormous forces? To answer this, we must consider briefly the nature of wave motion. When a wind blows over a wheat field, waves appear to travel across the field, whereas the wheat itself remains rooted, slowly swinging back and forth. Similarly, in the case of water waves, the waveform travels swiftly over the water surface, whereas the water particles oscillate back and forth, but scarcely advance. The speed of the wave form is called wave velocity, the speed of the water particles is called orbital velocity. This fundamental difference between wave velocity and orbital velocity was already recognized by Leonardo da Vinci. Orbital velocity is generally much slower than wave velocity except for a breaking wave, a case which is of particular importance in the application to engineering problems. IN the manufacture of telephone apparatus a number of nonferrous sheet metals are blanked and formed to produce a wide variety of parts, which are generally small in size because of space and weight requirements. Many are given sharp bends in forming, so that they may be assembled into compact units. This study covered sheet metal of the alloys of brass, phosphor bronze and nickel silver that are most extensively used by our company. In general, the sheets range from 0.005 to 0.100 in. in thickness and from 1/4 hard to extra spring temper in hardness. As many parts function as flat springs, and others require the maximum stiffness for structural reasons, a large percentage of the metal is used in the hard and spring tempers. So, because of the necessity for the minimum radius of bend consistent with the maximum in hardness, there has been a need for information as to the forming characteristics of these sheet metals in the various alloys, tempers and thicknesses. The literature yields relatively little regarding such forming characteristics, so that designers of apparatus and tools have been largely dependent upon past experience or tool tryouts for guidance. In presenting tabular data intended as a basis for selecting the temper of the metal and radius of the bend, we recognize the influence of many other factors which are not covered in this study. For example, the angle of the bend and conditions of the metal, such as grain size and presence of impurities, as well as conditions of the fabricating process, such as rate of forming and adjustment of the tools, may all affect the result. In addition, a bumping operation subsequent to forming, which is frequently used to set the bend, increases the strain on the metal. We wish to emphasize the fact that this is not considered a scientific investigation of the formability of materials or an attempt to correlate forming, characteristics with various other properties of the metals, except in so far as such properties are controlled by commercial limits on composition and temper.

THE PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS Toward the end of the 19th century, American industry began a drastic reorganization. The many, small, often-regional firms were supplanted by large national corporations-often produced by mergers among the existing firms. Giant companies appeared throughout American industry and many of them were engaged in the mineral industries.a The largest combines, by far, to emerge during the period were United States Steel and Standard Oil. Long before the restructuring had run its course, widespread concern arose over the process of concentration. Efforts were made to control, if not stop, the transformation. The concern produced the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 and the first of many federal regulatory agencies-the Interstate Commerce Commission (see Refs. 24, 31, 42). The basic objectives of these policies remain unclear to this day. The crucial issue is whether the goal is primarily to insure development of a more competitive economy or to preserve a social structure leaving more scope for small businesses. Complications arise from difficulties in agreeing upon the meaning of these terms. Studies of the early years of the antitrust movement suggest that it involved no particular concern over the mineral industries. Objections were directed at big companies in general. To be sure, the conservation movement arose in roughly the same period and did stress the evils of monopoly control of minerals. However, direct, continuing influence of conservation policy on antitrust is not apparent. Many of the most important antitrust cases, nevertheless, involved minerals. This, of course, may be sheer coincidence; the choice of cases has never followed any obvious pattern. Certainly, no simple hypothesis can explain the interest consistently. Once it may have been true that mineral industries were more likely than other sectors to be dominated by a few large companies. Yet, often sharp reversals of such tendencies -e.g., in oil and aluminum-have not removed antitrust interest. AIR conditioning, or air cooling, for the improvement of ventilation in the Butte mines has come into increasing use during the past 10 years. In part, the methods practiced have been described in previous publications of the Institute, but some improvements on earlier methods have been made and a number of new features have been developed. This paper is presented as a record of progress made, and for the sake of completeness describes all general features of the work. The need for air conditioning in the ventilation of mines in the district arises from the fact that the temperature of the ground and mine water has shown a very great increase with increase in mining depth, and has now reached a maximum of slightly over 130°F. The most difficult part of the ventilation problem is the maintenance of temperature and humidity of a satisfactory standard in the working places, especially on the lower levels. Although ordinary ventilation is adequate to maintain good conditions in most of the working places it is subject to a number of limitations at great depth. Most important among these limitations is that with increase in depth the air becomes heated before it reaches the working places, both by compression from increase in atmospheric Pressure and by heat transferred to it from rock at high temPerature, so that its capacity for lowering temperatures is greatly reduced before it reaches the operating zone. Increasing depth of mining also increases the distance traveled by the air in its passage through the mine, and this causes a corresponding increase in resistance to air flow, so that there is greater difficulty in maintaining even the same volume in circulation. Thus, in the face of a demand that the ventilating system have a very much greater capacity to remove heat from the mine, the tendency is for that capacity to diminish. The only evident alternatives were (I) the opening of additional air shafts to increase the volume of air in circulation, (2) an extension of the existing system that would be subject to the same limitations, or (3) the adoption of an entirely different method such as air cooling. Fortunately for an economic solution of the problem, the mean annual temperature of the surface atmosphere at Butte is about 40°F., with very low relative humidity in summer, so that there is unlimited natural cooling power at a temperature range adaptable to air-conditioning methods. Methods Two similar methods of air conditioning are used, as necessitated by service requirements and dependent upon the equipment available. In one, which is the more important and has the greater cooling capacity, water is circulated in a closed circuit, and, alternately, first absorbs heat from warm mine air and then dissipates it in the surface atmosphere by cooling at a cooling tower. An increasing amount of attention is being paid to the possible influence of oxygen, in its several modes of occurrence in steel, upon some of the properties of the metal; but clearly investigations along this line are unlikely to yield significant results until reliable analytical methods for the determination of oxygen have been established. This paper presents some results of a study of an improved Ledebur method which aims to determine a definite portion of the oxygen; namely, that which presumably is present in diffusible form in the solid steel. These more or less preliminary results lead us to believe that the oxygen so determined has some significance; their presentation at this time will, we hope, stimulate discussion of, and focus attention upon, certain rather neglected aspects of the problem. Considerable work has been done recently on methods of estimating inclusions and on the vacuum-fusion method for oxygen; with results which, however, are of somewhat questionable significance. It is commonly presumed that the oxygen in a bath of molten steel in a furnace is present partly as a separate phase consisting of suspended particles of oxides or silicates, partly in solution, the latter being probably the more important. Upon addition of a deoxidizer, it reacts with some portion of the dissolved oxygen and precipitates it as additional suspended particles; the oxygen not eliminated in this way, which remains in solution in the liquid steel, may be regarded indifferently either as dissolved oxygen or as dissolved FeO. When the steel is poured, some of the suspended particles rise towards the surface, others remain trapped in the finished steel, appearing as nonmetallic inclusions in amounts corresponding usually to about 0.01 to 0.03 per cent Oz in the steel. The dissolved oxygen may be partly eliminated as CO during freezing of the ingot, but some remains either in solution or in part precipitated as FeO. Finished steels may thus contain oxygen in several forms: (1) In non-metallic inclusions which are probably quite insoluble in the solid metal at all temperatures; (2) in solid solution which at lower temperatures may be supersaturated; (3) in FeO particles produced by relief of this

The anodic treatment of aluminum presents problems of scientific as well as of commercial interest.l-3 Of particular interest is the fact that, during the anodic oxidation process, the oxide continues to form at the metal-oxide interface under any oxide previously formed. This has led to speculation as to the mechanism involved in the formation of the relatively thick oxide coatings that are used commercially for decorative or protective purposes. Furthermore, the ability of certain types of oxide coatings to adsorb dyes and other substances has stimulated research to determine the actual structure of these adsorptive coatings. It has been found that anodic oxide coatings on aluminum are composed essentially of aluminum oxide. They are formed by the action of oxygen ions penetrating to the metal surface during the electrolytic oxidation treatment. These coatings can be formed in a number of different electrolytes, as for example, those which contain sulphuric acid, chromic acid, oxalic acid, or boric acid. These are the commonest and most useful electrolytes employed commercially. Except for certain specific conditions of formation, the coatings in general have been found to be amorphous alumina, as far as can be determined by X-ray or electron-diffraction methods. Anodic oxidation processes can be arranged in three rather general classes if they are grouped in relation to the solvent action of the electrolyte on the coating.4 In the first class, the electrolyte has little or no solvent action on the coating that is formed. In general, coatings produced under such circumstances are nonporous and non-adsorptive. In the second class, the electrolyte exerts an appreciable solvent action on the coating. These coatings are porous and adsorptive. Finally, for the third class, the electrolyte tends to dissolve the coating about as rapidly as it is formed. This action produces electrolytic brightening or anodic polishing of the aluminum surface and at most leaves only a very thin film of oxide. The nonporous and nonadsorptive type of oxide film is represented by the coatings that are formed when solutions of boric acid are employed as the electrolyte. It is especially significant that these impervious films are formed in electrolytes that exert little or no solvent action on the coating. Where a boric acid electrolyte is used, the coating tends to form rapidly, with the result that the flow of current is soon reduced to substantially zero. This indicates that the growth of the coating has stopped. As a rule, the thickness of the coating is roughly proportional to the voltage employed for formation and the coatings of this type are exceedingly thin. Geological Sketch.-The rhyolite area near Silver Cliff includes what may be called the Silver Cliff plateau, with Round mountain and the intervening valley. The plateau is about 2 miles long and 1 mile wide. From its northern part rise the White hills, which have no special topographic importance, as their highest point is only 400 ft. above the northern edge of the rhyolite mass. Round mountain, on the other hand, is a quite sharply pointed conical hill, so steep-sided as to constitute an important topographic feature, although its elevation above the plains around it is barely 700 ft. The summit of Round mountain is dense banded rhyolite, with steep, irregular clip; the southern end is breccia containing fragments of the banded rock. There are slight exposures of glassy forms of rhyolite on the lower slopes. On the east, the Archaean rocks extend half-way up the side of the mountain, and the contact between them and the rhyolite is vertical, or dips steeply to the west. This mountain is supposed to be at the vent from which the rhyolite of the plateau was poured out. The Silver Cliff plateau occupies the site of a former basin, in which at one time there was probably a lake. At the time of the rhyolitic outburst of the Rosita hills there was a local eruption of the same character in this region, commencing with showers of volcanic ash and of rock-fragments, which filled the lake and built tip about it hills which have since been removed in great measure by erosion. At present the southern half of the plateau is capped by solid lava to a depth in places of 150 ft. The cliff of blackened rhyolite on the southern edge, where the main discovery of ore was made, is from 30 to 50 ft.

In a discussion of a paper on The Basic Process as Applied to Copper Smelting, by Percy C. Gilchrist, read before the Society of Chemical Industry, London, Jan. 5, 1891,' Prof. W. C. Roberts-Austen asked Mr. Gilchrist whether he thought that the substitution of a basic lining for acid lining in the Manhks process would afford anything like the service which it had been shown to render in the metallurgy of iron. Claude Vautin stated that he had experimented for over two years. with basic linings for Bessemer converters for copper mattes at Cobar, but had given up the attempt on the score of cost. Mr. Gilchrist in his reply stated that he did not believe in applying any system of Bessemerizing to copper. About the time of the presentation of the paper mentioned,Hermann Keller, Superintendent of the Parrot smelter, in Butte, was experimenting on a large scale with converters lined with magnesite brick. He gave up the idea on account of the cost of linings and because no particular advantage was observed. My belief is that his tuyeres and converters were too small. A short time afterward similar experiments were tried at the Great Falls plant of the Boston & Montana Co., and at the Old Works of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in Anaconda. These were abandoned on the score of cost and the lack of advantages. The same cause of failure, in my opinion, holds here. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co., however, adopted the magnesite brick lining for its tilting casting machines. Fig. 1 is a view of the first tilting furnace casting copper. It was made from an old Brueckner roasting cylinder. Fig. 2 shows an elevation and vertical and horizontal longitudinal sections of the second tilting furnace, built in 1897.

THE literature of the last decade is rich with information relating to the cause and means of control of grain growth in pure metals, but is deficient concerning the role diffusion plays in grain growth, although during this period many new products that depend on diffusion for their properties and success have been developed. Among these are cementation products, produced by calorizing, chromizing, and carbonizing, or by mixing, pressing, and sintering powdered metals such as Syke's iron-molybdenum die material, Genelite, and Elcon Metal (copper, tungsten) etc. This is a fertile field for new developments, but before it can be util-ized to the fullest extent there must be a thorough investigation of the processes by which diffusion and grain growth take place. Grain growth plays no small part in the process and certainly the physical properties of these products depend largely on the grain size and state of equilibrium produced. The field of investigation does not end here, but may be extended to the effect of diffusion on impurities, segregations and dendrites in the broad field of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy. A number of years ago the author investigated several of these cases and noted, with striking regularity, the pronounced effect of diffusion in promoting recrystallization and grain growth. An example of this phenomenon is given in his paper on chromizing1 which contained photomicrographs of large radial or columnar crystals produced by diffusion of chromium in the solid state. Another manifestation of this effect was discussed by Austen,2 who showed the part hydrogen plays in the decarburization of steel and the effect of diffusion upon the grain structure.

During the last twenty years or so the chemical investigation of rocks has made great advances, and it is now generally recognized that a knowledge of the chemical composition is as essential as that of the texture or mineral composition—if not more so—for the proper classification of rocks and study of their origin and relationships. Rock-analyses have vastly increased in number and, what is of greater importance, in quality. New and improved methods permit of greater accuracy than was possible in the early days, and the list of chemical constituents frequently determined has risen from the seven or eight of the greater part of the nineteenth century, to twenty or more. Indeed, rock-analyses with determinations of so many constituents are now commonly made by the chemists of the United States and Australia, while in Germany, Great Britain, France, and Italy the rarer constituents are determined more frequently than formerly. As a consequence of this modern, accurate work, it has been discovered that some elements which were formerly supposed to be rare are of wide-spread occurrence and are often present in considerable amount. The fact is further being developed that the elements tend to show certain relations of occurrence or abundance in connection with each other. This is a fact which is applicable to the rarer elements, and which also finds a broad geological and petrological expression in the recognition of petrographic provinces. We are beginning to obtain some definite, though as yet rudimentary, knowledge of the distribution of the elements among igneous rocks. Some of the results along these lines obtained by study of the vast accumulation of analytical data now available are well known to petrologists, while others do not seem to be so gener-

Residual lattice strai?zs were produced in 2024 aluminum and ingot iron by uniaxial tensile deformation. These strains were rneasured on the original surface and ulith depth below the surface. The strains conformed approximately to those from a macroscopic stress distribution but they were not truly macroscopic in nature. The exact mechanism which apparently causes the coherently difi9,acting region of each grain to behave as if macroscopically stressed was not determined. MACROSCOPIC stresses in metals produce strains in the lattice which result in X-ray line broadening and line displacements. The latter effect can be utilized in a technique for determining stresses in metals as first shown by Lester and born.' Subsequent advances in technique have enabled the X-ray method of stress measurement to be satisfactorily applied to many problems involving residual stresses of a macroscopic nature, such as those due to welding, grinding, shot-peening, and so forth. In the case of stresses such as those described above, the correlation of X-ray- and mechanically determined data has been generally good. However, plastically extended polycrystalline metals have sometimes been reported2 to show line displacements upon release of the applied tensile load, yet the nature or origin of the residual lattice strains, rls, producing these displacements has never been clear. As will be pointed out, this lack of clarity regarding the macroscopic or microscopic nature and origin of these stresses casts doubt on the validity of results achieved by the commonly accepted techniques of X-ray stress measurement. This anomalous behavior requires clarification to remove the doubts concerning X-ray stress measurement. The present paper is the result of an investigation of the interesting behavior of such plastically extended polycrystalline metal bodies. The studies were originated to carry out the following tasks: 1) Observe whether a residual lattice strain is produced as a result of plastic extension and show whether any residual lattice strains produced can be related to the usual concept of a macrostress. 2) Examine the origin of any residual lattice strains observed. 3) Consider the implications or consequences of the existence of such residual lattice strains on the problem of X-ray stress measurement. THEORY 1) Lattice Strains. The theoretical developments necessary for the treatment of lattice strains and their relation to stresses follow from the classical theory of elasticity and have been adequately covered by arrett. For an isotropic solid under homogeneous deformation, it can be shown that, for uniaxial stresses where Dl is the macrostress acting in the longitudinal direction; E$L is the lattice strain in the plane defined by the surface normal and the longitudinal direction at an angle, , from the surface normal; ET is the similar strain in the transverse plane; E is Young's modulus; and v is Poisson's ratio. Eq. [2] is independent of angle + and Eq. [I] is a linear function of sin2, see Fig. 1, and can be solved analytically for DL if E and u are known and EL is measured. IT has been said that carbon is "ubiquitous" with reference to iron alloys. Certainly at temperatures where carbon and iron form the solid solution, austenite, it may be readily added to, or removed from, steel surfaces. Differences in concentration potential are the sole requirements for carbon flow. To measure the rate of carbon flow, a proportionality factor, D, is arbitrarily expressed in units of (length)2 X (time)-1. If the term used for carbon concentration is weight pct C, as is customary, then a factor must be found, changing this term to one of weight per unit volume when the diffusion coefficient, D, is used in flow formulae. The determination of D values for carbon is complicated since D varies with the concentration itself. The Matano method has often been employed for systems involving a variant D. This method expreses an evaluation of unsteady flow whereby .0 is given a relationship with the numerical value of C-X slopes. The author contends that this solution is incorrect, except when D is invariant. The primary purpose of this paper is to support this contention. Here diffusion is controlled under two conditions of flow. The first part deals with the steady state; the second part considers unsteady flow under definite restrictions. Beginning with the fundamental concept, the development is continued until equations for C-X curves are obtained. The solution is then subjected to experimental data. It is realized that a great amount of reliable data is required for a rigorous proof. No such research is claimed. Instead an attempt is made to set forth the physical significance of the diffusion mechanism, and particularly to express the factors which influence the flow of carbon in austenite. Of equal significance is the implication that gaseous media may be employed with reasonable accuracy in making these determinations. THE STEADY STATE DIFFUSION OF CARBON IN AUSTENITE The fundamental experiment defining diffusion in solid metals may be readily performed for carbon in gamma iron.1 For this experiment a thin plate of medium carbon steel is chosen. The surfaces of this plate may be taken as two parallel planes which may be considered infinite for points well in the center of the planes. These two planes are held at different concentrations of carbon at a constant temperature. This temperature, 1700°F for example, is one where the single phase, carbon in solution with gamma iron, exists. When these conditions are held for a sufficient time the concentration of carbon of the different points of the solid settles down towards its steady state value. At points well removed from the ends, the concentration will remain the same along planes parallel to the surfaces of the plate.

The mine blacksmith and drill-steel sharpening shop at the Franklin mine of the New Jersey Zinc Co. is on the surface, adjoining the main shaft. It is a brick building, 51 by 30 ft. inside dimensions, with a corrugated iron roof and concrete floor. .About two-thirds of the steels used are brought up through the main shaft; the remainder through two auxiliary shafts and are carried to the shop by team or truck. At each shaft sufficiently large stocks of sharp drills of various typcs are kept to replace all the dull steels that may be sent up; while at the shop enough sharp drills are kept to replace the dull steels in the stocks kept at the auxiliary shafts. Though this entails keeping a larger number of drill steels in service than might be required by other methods, there is less hurry in the sharpening shop and the steels have a longer period of rest. If a rest from use enables steel to recover from fatigue strains, this method secures that rest. The forms shown in Fig. 1 are supplied to each shift boss in books of 100. These are used to requisition sharp drills from the shaft stocks and cnable the men at the tops of the shafts to sort out the required sizes and to hare them ready to be sent to the various shaft stations. At one of the auxiliary shafts, the dull drills are placed on a platform from which they are dumped into the body of the wagon that takes them to the shop.

Application of computers to present-day open-pit mining with bucket wheel excavators (BWE) is discussed. The development of the wheel excavators and their use in mining are discussed along with the necessity for building a computer model of the bucket wheel and the mathematical formulation of the problem. The simulation procedure, testing the model, and test results are summarized. Even though the mining industry in 1966 produced more ore than ever before, current extraction rates are only a fraction of what is expected in the later years of the 20th century. Nearly 90% of all metals and mineral products consumed last year was recovered by open-pit mining. This has placed great pressure on this segment of the industry which has, consequently, resulted in some spectacular developments. With increasing size of projects, the need for increased sophistication of engineering, planning, management, and administration of modern mining installations has never become more apparent. The design of complete systems for the mine and plant that fit the mold of today's business and social environments is undergoing an evolutionary process. Traditional concepts in mine development and operations are being sidestepped in favor of new ideas and principles. As the overburden thickness increases, materials handling presents a major problem to mining companies, especially those concerned with the mass production of ore and waste from low-grade deposits. The profit margin here is likely to be significantly less as to take chances with capital investment. Constant efforts are needed to improve upon productivity if the ore is to be economically mined. The development of vast low-grade deposits and thick overburden deposits calls for better tools to handle the enormous amount of materials. A natural solution to this problem is the use of bucket wheel excavators (BWE), which employ a continuous cutting head to feed the materials handling system. High productivity, versatility, economy of operation, and adaptability to most types of haulage systems combine to make BWE's attractive for large earth-moving operations. "Operating costs are being pushed down by the impact of giant haulage units, by high-speed conveyors, and computerized railroads. Matching all these with the continuous output of BWEs, one can visualize increased production at much lower costs." Historical Background The wheel excavator, which was patented in Germany in 1913, made its first appearance in an open-pit lignite mine in 1920. From this early beginning, however, BWEs were slow coming into practice. Initial developments were dampened by many design problems. From 1936 onward, major developments in design improved the wheel's ability, capacity, and versatility. A literature survey shows that wheel excavators are being used in Australia, Zambia, South Africa, the Congo, India, Indonesia, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Great Britain, Guyana, Yugoslavia, Morocco, Germany, Canada, and the U.S. for mining and loading chalk, lignite, clay, sandstone, phosphate, broken ore of iron, coal, shale, loose and semi-loose rock overburden.' A recent LMG* BWE at work in a German lignite mine weighs 6790 tons with an hourly capacity of 11,000 cu m. Although the BWE has wide applicability, its application to new mining areas poses a problem. Because of the large capital investment involved in BWE application and the narrow profit margins in mining low-grade ores or coal at depth, little margin of error can be tolerated in the selection, design, and operation of these machines. The questions that need to be answered prior to installation of a BWE for a mineable deposit are: 1.) What are the anticipated BWE performance characteristics? 2) Which method of BWE operation is most efficient? Attempts to answer these questions require a thorough knowledge of the mining system and the BWE operation. One approach is the building of a computer-ori-ented simulation model to determine how information and policy create the character of the BWE system under consideration. BWE Operation Modern BWEs generally excavate in blocks. Fig. la shows a BWE working in an established cut. The wheel is positioned to travel on the pit floor in line with the top edge of the old highwall. As it advances, a new highwall is exposed in the direction of excavation. Digging is done by rotating the wheel, swinging it from side to side in long parallel arcs, and "crowding" into the bank, by advancing the entire machine, or by the travel of the digging boom if an automatic crowd is available (Fig. lb). A second way by which the wheel can be advanced into the bank is by the falling cut method. A brief description of each of these methods follows. Cut with a Crowding Machine: At the end of every swing, the digging boom can be extended by the thickness of cut desired and the boom swung back in the reverse direction. Obviously, the thickness of bank excavated does not vary with the boom position; therefore, the slewing motion of the boom is fairly constant for uniform output. The thickness through which the digging boom can be advanced into the bank is theoretically calculated from the formula'
