Geophysical exploration for engineering purposes is conducted to decrease the risk in encountering site uncertainties. Such studies are needed in construction of underground facilities. Current responsibilities, opportunities and challenges for those with geophysical expertise are defined. These include: replacing the squiggly line format, developing verification sites for method evaluations, applying knowledge engineering and assuming responsibility for crucial national problems involving rock mechanics expertise.

Howe Memorial Lecture The Howe Memorial Lecture, in memory of Henry Marion Howe, Past President of the Institute, was authorized in April, 1923, as an annual address to be delivered by invitation under the auspices of the Institute by an individual of recognized and outstanding attainment in the science and -practice of iron and steel metallurgy- or-metallography, chosen -by-the Board-of Directors upon recommendation of the Iron and Steel Division. In leaching ores at atmospheric pressure it is often desirable to apply high reagent concentration, long exposure time, and elevated temperature. All of these conditions tend to increase the treatment cost. In conventional leaching, direct or countercurrent, the leaching fluid is needed to transport the solids through the process. This requires relatively large volumes of fluid and limits the reagent concentration economically feasible. The relatively high dilution also increases fuel cost if leaching is to be done above ambient temperature. Heating of water is expensive.

Deformation studies were performed on tuffaceous rocks fran Yucca Mountain, Nevada Test Site to determine the strengths and coefficients of friction under confining pressures from 10-50 MPa at room temperature. Frictional strengths of 30ºsawcut samples increased with pressure and reached values of around 150 MPa at the higher confining pressures. However, the failure strengths of the intact samples were quite unpredictable. The coefficients of friction ranged between 0.7 and 0.9 for all specimens. These data can be used in conjunction with in situ stress measurements at Yucca Mountain, to evaluate the potential for earthquake activity in the region.

During 1938 and 1939, an extensive series of geophysical surveys, employing both resistivity and magnetic methods, have been carried on in the Hawaiian Islands by the Section of Geophysics of the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the Division of Ground-Water of the Survey and the Division of Hydrography of the Territorial Government (see Fig. 1). During this time, surveys have been conducted on the islands of Oahu, Molokai, and Maui. Two distinct types of ground-water occurrence are being investigated: (1) The basal fresh-water lens floating on underlying salt water in obedience to the Ghyben-Herzberg principle (Fig. 2); and (2) perched ground-water (Fig. 3).
