PERHAPS the most widely used dispersants or gangue depressants in nonmetallic flotation are sodium silicates, which vary in silica-to-soda ratio from 1 to 3.75. Typical manufactured silicates in order of decreasing solubility and increasing amounts of silica are Metso, silica-to-soda ratio of 1.00; D, 2.00; RU, 2.40; K, 2.90; N, 3.22; and S-35, 3.75.* References in flotation literature's to the use of sodium silicates are often weak because they fail to mention the type of silicate used. Metso and silicate N have occasionally been mentioned, but when the type of silicate is not mentioned, it is usually assumed to be N, the cheapest of the soluble silicates and the one recommended by sodium silicate manufacturers as a flotation agent.

The desirability of employing the centigrade scale for the measurement of temperatures is becoming more and more recognized in this country, particularly in view of the fact that this scale is used almost exclusively in technical papers and publications—exclusively in those published in French or German. There are, however, a large number of factories and laboratories which still employ the Fahrenheit scale. It therefore frequently becomes necessary to convert one into the other and the accompanying chart (Fig. I) has been found very convenient for this purpose. This is the dawning of the computer age in process control. As 1968 drew to a close, many plants had computer installations which were being used for logging, monitoring and reporting. Today, computer usage is given serious consideration before the construction of any major minerals processing plant. Unitized automatic control of individual processes is abundant. Many plants are considering closing these control loops, i.e., allowing the computer to direct the operation of the controllers (Digital Analog Control-DAC). The next step is to make the computer itself the controller (Direct Digital Control-DDC)1 Perhaps the most important future use of computers will be in controlling interrelated operations and control units. Progress along these lines depends on the steadily improving capabilities in the field of mathematical modeling.

(communication to the Secretary*).-In that hart of Mr. Wilson's paper describing the Gilman cut-and-fill system, a few features do not appear to be fully explained. In what way is the waste used for filling obtained? The text mentions that, if waste is encountered when driving the filling raises, these raises are stopped until the fill is needed; that seems to suggest mining the capping for fill, which might make the backs of the stopes had as the stopes approach the top of the ore. If, on the other hand, the fill is brought to the raises in cars, are the crosscuts that are necessary in ore or waste? Is the cost of this fill included in the stoping costs given?

"The Great Falls of the Missouri are situated about 12 miles below the City of Great Falls and development work for the utilization of the power which they afford is now in progress. The natural fall is about 77 feet.The development will consist of a concrete dam 1,000 feet long on the crest line, and 73 feet high. The power house will be set below the present falls near the north end and the tailrace will be cut below an island which is situated just below the falls. The maximum head will be 153 feet. The power house will contain six units of 15,000 horse power each. The construction as contemplated will comprise about 180,000 cubic yards of concrete work, using 200,000 barrels of cement."

Anticipating the increasing importance of establishing working conditions on a scientific basis, the Department of Labor created the Working Conditions Service. This service is distinct from that performed by the Mediation and Conciliation branch, which deals with working conditions and industrial relations as controversial issues between employers and employees. The work of the Service is conducted through three coordinated divisions; Division of Industrial Hygiene and Medicine, Division of Labor Administration, and Division of Safety Engineering. The Division of Industrial Hygiene and Medicine will develop standards of sanitation and medical practice in industries. The personnel of this Division is detailed from the United States Public Health Service. The Division of Labor Administration will advise employers as to employment systems and labor management policies, and assist in putting into operation standard policies.

Bethlehem, Pa.-At the present time I believe there are 35 electric steel furnaces under construction in the United States, and many more in operation. The United States Steel Corporation, for example, is putting up for one firm a plant of eight electric furnaces. The principal increase in use of the electric furnace at the present time is based on its superiority for making steel for shrapnel and for munitions of war. I understand that electric steel has been found far more reliable and suitable than ordinary steel for these purposes in Europe.

An error occurred in the preparation of Fig. 3, p. 249, of Basic Statistical Measures Used in Geo-chemical Investigations of Colorado Plateau Uranium Deposits. This figure shows the relation of the arithmetic mean: geometric mean ratio to the geometric deviation. Curves for the cases where n, the number of samples, is 100, 10, and 5 are too high with respect to the ordinate. The error is negligible at low geometric deviations, but becomes increasingly greater wi,th higher values of geometric deviation. Greater stabilization in the petroleum industry was effected during 1934 through stricter compliance with curtailment measures and the establishment of the Pacific Coast Petroleum Agency. Various estimates of individual, company and state reserves revealed the fact that they were inadequate to sustain the present rate of production over a lengthy period, therefore drilling operations were increased during the year both in proved and wildcat territory. This greater activity resulted in the addition to reserves at Mountain View, Mount Poso and Edison in Kern County, Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara County and Playa del Rey in Los Angeles County. Additional reserves were also established in the Long Beach and Santa Fe Springs fields, in Los Angeles County, due to operators being successful in isolating small prolific sand bodies, formerly disregarded during the flush production periods.

WHEN I was an undergraduate at the Columbia School of Mines, the mining curriculum was subdivided into two major branches's known respectively as the Metallurgical and the Geological Options, which diverged rather widely as the course progressed. When I duly elected the Geological Option, I believed, I am sure, that this divergence would continue throughout the years. The facts have proved otherwise. The mining industry is a closely knit entity in which the search for its raw materials, called mining geology, cannot be separated from the conversion of these raw materials into marketable form, called metallurgy. The mining geologist searches for materials which the metallurgist can utilize, and only such; and whenever an advance in metallurgy opens the gates for new materials, the geologist's problem is correspondingly modified. No better instance of this relationship can be given than that seen in the Salt Lake region in recent years. Our mineral industry here is of long standing. The three principal tributary districts, Bingham, Park City and Tintic, were discovered in the 1860's and have been vigorously and intelligently developed for many decades. Their production has made the Salt Lake valley one of the world's great smelting centers. The maintenance of this industry has for years depended upon the continual development of new orebodies to take the place of those being extracted. Intensive exploration in the old districts has been supplemented by prospecting in outlying districts of lesser prominence. . Many new orebodies have been discovered, such as those of the Daly West, Silver King, and Judge mines in Park City, the Utah Apex in Bingham, and the Sioux, Colorado Chief Consolidated and Tintic Standard in Tintic. New mines in other districts have been discovered also, but without affecting the dominance of the three major districts. In all cases discoveries, to be of value, had to be of ore amenable to treatment in the available metallurgical plants. This meant that, for the most part, zincy ores, both oxide and sulfide, must remain untouched, and also that ores high in iron and ores high in silica had a fictitious value, either high or low, set by the balance of these

THE fact is notable though probably little known that the United States is the only nation obtaining and distributing through its Government bureaus any data pertaining to waste metals and drosses. Some foreign governments do issue reports relating to mine or smelter produc-tion of primary metals, but none gives in scope and detail the information published now by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and formerly by the U. S. Geological Survey; and this is despite the fact that the funds annually allotted for those purposes are insignificant in comparison with allotments for the preparation of data relating to other industries of like importance. The earliest data on the production of metals from secondary sources in the United States were-contained in a press bulletin issued by the U. S. Geological Survey on Jan. 4, 1909. The information published was that for the year 1907 obtained and compiled by C. E. Siebenthal, who was one of the first to visualize the growing importance of the scrap-metal industry. The National Conservation Commission had emphasized its opinion that the known domestic supply of certain kinds of the more important metals was being rapidly marketed and that while there was no immediate cause for concern it was best to conserve such resources. Not only had there been a lamentable lack of any data regarding the quantity of scrap metals available or used but also gross carelessness and indifference in the segregation, collection, and effective use of scrap material. Siebenthal realized that even approximately correct statistics of recoveries from the more important base-metal scrap and drosses were nearly as essential to both producers and consumers as the statistics of the output of primary metals. There were not then nor are there now sufficient funds for complete collection of data, nor was it considered the province of the Geological Survey to do more than determine approximately the recovery of secondary metals for use in supplementing those given for the primary metals. Reserves of Lake Superior Manganiferous Iron Ores Appendix-to paper by CARL ZAPFFE, presented at the Cleveland Meeting and issued, as Pamphlet No. 1664-C, with MINING AND METALLURGY, May, 1927. The author has made several test calculations on the basis of manganese units that are and may be involved. These are summarized here, as follows: On the basis of ore produced since 1902, the average annual requirement of manganese units would be 91,000 tons; on the basis of the production of the past 4 or 5 years, the requirement would be 145,000 tons; on the basis of the year 1925 only, the requirement would be 155,000 tons. Applying the percentage of increase for the next 20 years, as determined by the plat shown as Fig. 3, the total requirement for 20 years would be 3,254,000 to 3,572,000 tons, if one used either 145,000 tons or 155,000 tons as a starting point. We have the following interesting facts: (1) The Michigan ores contain only about one-half the manganese that the Cuyuna ore does; (2) the Cuyuna district now produces one-half the ore required; (3) the known tonnage of Cuyuna reserves is greater than the speculative reserve offered for Michigan; (4) at the present rate of production considered by tons, Michigan ores ought to be exhausted in 20 years or less while Cuyuna ores would last up to 44 years. We should now reduce the estimated reserves to a basis of manganese, units. Using the tonnages listed in Combinations 2, 3, 4 and 5, the reserves total 3,118,225 tons, 3,781,995 tons, 5,041,995 tons and 5,560,342 tons, respectively. Therefore, needing at the most 3,572,000 tons, as shown above, either Combination 3, 4 or 5 will not only suffice but will leave an excess-enough for 1 or 2 years for Combination 3, 9 or 10 years for Combination 4, and 12' to 13 years for Combination 5. This means that for Combination 5, without using tonnages obtained from beneficiating or from mixing poor ores, the reserves are ample for about 33 years.

The advent of larger drilling, excavation, and milling equipment is resulting in a tremendous increase in the scale and annual tonnage of open pit mining. At the present time, open pits up to 3000 ft. deep, and tailings dams and waste dumps up to 600 ft. high are being planned. One of the major problems that projects of this magnitude create is stability. Stability at open pit mining developments must be assessed for tailings dams, waste dumps, and open pit slopes in overburden soil and in rock. Soil mechanics principles are used to assess the stability for the first three. This science was developed by Dr. Karl Terzaghi in the 1920’s, and since that time the theories and principles have been tested and evaluated. This experience has resulted in the development of sound theoretical concepts, workable sampling and testing techniques, and accurate methods of analysis. Typical problems that can be analyzed include: -bearing capacity of soil under dams and waste dumps. - amount of seepage under and through dams. - stability of slopes and determination of safe slope angles for tailings dams, waste dumps, and open pits. - influence of earthquakes on stability. - influence and cost of different excavation and construction techniques. To assist in comparing engineering experience, an international soil classification system has been developed and used for several decades. In addition, many excellent text books are available outlining soil mechanics principles and techniques. A high degree of technology exists in soil mechanics. This, the mining engineer cannot afford to ignore. If soil mechanics principles had been applied, many major failures involving tailings, tailings dams, or waste dumps, such as those at Aberfan, Mufulira, Luanshya, and El Cobre would not have occurred. Tailings dams are planned in Canada that will be up to 600 ft. high. Construction procedures used in the past have paid little attention to the compaction of the shell material or to the influence of earthquakes on stability. This neglect has led to failures. While failures in low dams may not be too serious, for high dams such failures could have catastrophic results. Another major area of concern is the stability of rock slopes. At the close of the Bethlehem Meeting, the writer was experimenting with large fuel-charges, 4000 Ibs. basis, as compared with 2000 Ibs., hot had not made sufficient progress to draw any safe conclusions. Previously me had always used 2000 Ibs. fuel, the ore-burden being proportioned to this as a basis. I could never persuade myself that there was any advantage to be derived from following the more popular method of larger fuel-charges. Our men were accustomed to the old way of filling ; and we did not care to run the risk of the errors likely to follow any alteration in routine work, particulary as I could not, by my course of reasoning, discover ally compensating gain. Nevertheless, after reading Mr. Gordon's discussion of Mr. Birkinbine's paper, '' Operations of Warwick Furnace from August 27th, 1880, to September 1st, 1885" (Transactions, xiv., 833), I determined to test by actual experiment the value of large fuel-charges : the change was made in the week commencing March 28th, 1886, and continued until July 25th, about four months. The fuel and ores remained during the trial the same as had been used before, and have been used since. For the first two weeks, the furnace worked with great regularity, giving excellent results, exceeding those of the two weeks immediately preceding. But for my remembrance that the furnace had on former occasions worked with equal uniformity for longer periods without any apparent reason, I should doubtless have concluded that this improvement was due to the different method of filling and congratulated myself that a means had at last been found to prevent inconvenient "dirt" accumulations. Before abjuring my previous skepticism, however, I resolved to pursue the trial further. The fourth meek developed the peculiar conditions that had prevailed previous to the change; and these continued with more or less frequency during May, June and July. At last, finding no improvement over the smaller charges—no change in fact for better or for worse—I commenced filling the 2000 lbs. fuel-charge in the latter part of July, and have continued it up to present writing, September 4th.

Portland cement is manufactured under either of two general processes, the wet or the dry. The raw materials in general consist of limestone, shells, marl, cement rock, clay, shale, blast-furnace slag, etc., so proportioned that when calcined the desired composition will be obtained. In the wet process the combined raw materials are ground to extreme fineness in the presence of water, to a resulting slurry of from 30 to 50 per cent moisture content. The moisture of the slurry may be reduced by thickening or filtering processes for feed to the cement kiln or the slurry may be fed to the kiln with its full percentage of water. The dry process differs from the wet in that the surface moisture of the raw materials is removed prior to grinding. For the drying of these materials heat is required and in most cases is produced by burning of raw fuel either on grates or stokers before the dryers or in suspension in the form of pulverized coal, oil or gaseous fuel. The power required for making the cement is sometimes purchased from outside sources; sometimes it is generated from the heat in the waste gases leaving the cement kilns, or generated at the plants direct from raw fuel. We have, then, as the possible requirements of fuel in the cement industry: (1) fuel for power generation, (2) fuel for drying raw materials, including coal before pulverizing, and (3) fuel for burning the raw materials to cement clinker. There is no essential difference in quality required in fuel for burning the materials by the wet and,dry processes. Fuel fob Power Generation As there is nothing peculiar to steam generation in a cement mill power plant as compared with other power plants this use classification of such fuel will be found in other reports of the Technical Committee. Fuel for Drying Raw Materials and Coal Any fuels capable of producing moderate temperature gases may be used for drying raw materials. There is no problem of material contamination from fuels at this part of the cement manufacture to be guarded against.

THE period of new oil discoveries in Illinois began in February 1937, when The Pure Oil Co. found the Clay City field the forerunner of a number of limestone pools. The importance of the area was emphasized greatly in December of the same year with the discovery of excellent sand production by The Carter Oil Co. at Louden and in June, 1938, with the discovery by The Texas Co. of the Salem field producing from two sands and one lime- stone horizon. By September, 1939, new discoveries in Illinois were estimated to have added, under prevailing production practices, some 500,000,000 barrels to the crude oil reserves of the United States and to have produced to that date some 63,000,000 barrels with daily production passing the 300,000-barrel mark by Sept. 1.
