EFFORTS to obtain definite quantitative data when employing the currently used bubble pick-up method', as a pre-flotation investigation tool led to the adoption of the magnifying mirror method and the microscopic method modifications. Quantitative data obtained by these two methods were converted into bubble pick-up indices and bubble pick-up coefficients. Rough correlations were established between the calculated indices and the results of contact angle testing as well as actual flotation under the same conditions.

On Saturday evening, Sept. 27, immediately following the Chicago meeting of the Institute, the former students of Dr. T. C. Chamberlain, for 27 years head of the Department of Geology at the University of Chicago, will hold a dinner in his honor. Dr. Chamberlain has recently retired with the title of Professor Emeritus, and expects to celebrate his 76th birthday in September. Time Now For Thinking In these turbulous times a natural restiveness is created among the younger men of the mining profession. Many of them are veterans of World War II and the question is raised in their minds as to whether or not to go back into military service. There is time to think about this question now and it is advisable to do so in order that snap decisions may be avoided if war is declared.

This list, revised annually, is issued by the Education Committee of the Engineers Council for Professional Development, and covers all phases of engineering education. The AIME is actively represented on ECPD, which was jointly organized by the Founder Societies and various other groups interested in the professional recognition of engineers.

In ore mining technology, the loading and hauling operations are undoubtedly the area where the most spectacular progress has been made during the last twenty years. In the iron ore mines of Eastern France production of 62 million tons for 1962 and 19863 constitute a worthwhile experience worldwide. These deposits which are located in Lorraine are of sedimentary origin and they contain many mineralized horizons with workable seams varying in depth from 330 to 830 ft.

CLEANING fine coal in jigs is not new in Europe, where the feldspar jig is being used almost exclusively for this purpose. A feldspar jig operates with an artificial bed made up generally of feldspar or other hard rock material. Dimensions and specific gravity of this material must be of suitable values for good bedding qualities. For good efficiency, the size should range between 1x2 in. and 2x2x1/2 in. thick.

INTRODUCTION Considerable research has been conducted on the use of steady and pulsed jets of water at high pressures to produce slots or holes in rock, and to fracture rock. The primary objectives of prior research have generally been to determine the feasibility of excavating or drilling rock or minerals and to determine the optimum jet parameters for this purpose. The present study was undertaken in order to identify the pertinent dimensionless parameters involving jet and rock properties which characterize the liquid jet penetration process and to develop empirical correlations of the existing test data which would permit engineering prediction by means of scaling relationships. The present paper is in the nature of a progress report, because not all the existing test data have been processed. Also effort has been concentrated on correlation of data on the specific energy (jet kinetic energy per unit volume of rock removed or broken), rather than correlation of jet penetration depth, hole diameter, kerf depth or kerf width. However, it is clear that this method of correlating data on specific energy in terms of dimensionless parameters shows great promise and provides insight into the nature of the physical processes of jet erosion and fracture. It therefore can help to avoid drawing incorrect conclusions from limited experimental data. DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS The method of dimensional analysis is particularly valuable where the mathematical relationships controlling a physical process are unknown or complex. The grouping

Having recently had occasion to make a series of analyses of fire-clays for the present Ohio Geological Survey, I found that the amounts of potash and soda determined indirectly by measuring the chlorides volumetrically did not " check " with those obtained directly. Investigation with the spectroscope showed the presence of lithia in what seemed very appreciable quantities. The examination was made of a considerable number of samples, and in every case this element was found, though in varying amounts, as judged by the intensity of the spectrum. To guard against error from the impurity of reagents, the whole process was repeated, using the same reagents in corresponding amounts, but leaving ont the clay. In no case did these " blanks" show lithia; hence the presence of this element in the clays seemed to be established conclusively. In the same series of analyses, titanic acid, in amounts varying from three-tenths to nearly two per cent., was found. The presence of titanium was first observed in the Ohio clays, nearly three years ago, in the examination of clays from Logan. The occurrence of this element is, of course, not unusual in clay, but I believe that none of the published analyses of Ohio clays give it; certainly none of the former Ohio geological reports speak of its presence. The following analyses show both the above ingredients. They were made during the summer of 1883.

In recent years, with the advent of new steelmaking procedures, the emphasis has turned away from conventional teeming and has been directed toward continuous casting. This paper points out the fact that there are still new methods being considered to decrease the problems and costs associated with conventional teeming. Although Inland has had no experience with the repair of mold lugs, we do find some problem with damaged ears associated with mechanically capped steel. When pouring bottle tops, any crane movement or leak from the pouring nozzle may result in steel over the top of the mold which, in turn, may result in the shearing of the mold lugs during stripping. Recent back pouring practices increase the chances of this occurring. At Inland's steelmaking shops, we have tried to combat this problem by various methods such as burning the steel from around the top of the mold at the pouring stand with oxy-gas torches. Last year, No. 4 BOF began a conversion from round to elliptically shaped bottle top caps. This change has greatly reduced the chance of splashing due to crane swing by increasing the dimension in the direction on normal swing. The answer to this particular problem is, however, tighter control of pouring performance. We are presently engaged in a process of re-education of personnel and experimentation with different materials and designs of nozzles, heads, and sleeves to help us achieve our goal.

This paper is discussed not because of its intrinsic value but because it has been related by its authors to the oilwell gun perforators. It is well known that conditions almost ever present in oilwell perforations are the overburden and the presence of the casing. Because of the lack of information in the paper on the dimensions or confinement of the target rocks, one is led to guess that they were not confined at all and, particularly, that no steel front plates were used on the impact face of the rocks to materialize the presence of the cemented casing. This situation, plus the fact that small steel balls have been used as projectiles instead of actual bullets, makes the whole thing unapplicable to oilwell perforation. When shooting is performed against target rocks confined (as shown on Fig. 1) in such a way as to give a fair image of the overburden applied to the formation to be perforated, as well as of the cemented casing, the following are found. 1. There is no cratering worthy of mention, even with bullets having 10 times higher impact energy per unit projected area than the steel balls mentioned in the article. This has been confirmed with sandstone as well as with other rocks (granite, limestone and chalk). See Figs. 2 and 3. 2. Penetrations vary closely as the logarithm of the impact velocity. No new pools were opened and several areas with promising structures, in the northwestern part of the state, were disappointing when drilled. In looking for an explanation of these failures, it is suggested that it will be necessary to find areas in which the lower beds of the Mississippian are upfolded, in order to obtain production in northwestern Missouri. To do this, geophysical exploration or test drilling far enough into the Mississippian beds to get cores or cuttings of definitely established age appear to be the best methods. Although not leading to new production, drilling in Missouri established two new state records, one for depth and another for the amount of rotary drilling. An important well† in sec. 24, T. 19 N., R. 11 E., Pemiscot County, in the southeastern corner of the state, was drilled with a rotary to 4740 ft., several hundred feet deeper than any previous hole. The total footage drilled by rotary rigs of various types was 31,135 ft. and that by cable tools, 29,166 feet. The total number of completions was 85, of which 18 were gas wells with an initial open-flow capacity of 12,528,000 cu. ft., and 67 were dry holes. Of the latter, 19 were drilled into Mississippian or older formations. Table I gives a summary of activities by counties.

The movement for Federal endowment of engineering and industrial research was revived early in the present Congress by the introduction of two bills into the Senate. The first bill, introduced by Senator Smith of Georgia, provides for the establishment of an engineering experiment station in each state under the direction of and in connection with some university, engineering school, or land-grant college. The state legislature of each state is authorized to designate the institution best equipped to conduct the work but wherever the land-grant college has facilities approximately equal to those of the other institutions of the state, it shall be designated. All designations of institutions are made subject to the approval of the Secretary of Commerce. The Secretary of Commerce is authorized to secure practical uniformity of methods, and efficiency and economical expenditure of funds by indicating such lines of work as shall seem to him important from a military; naval, industrial or national standpoint, but the responsibility for the initiation and conduct of research shall rest with the individual engineering experiment stations. Uniform standards of research are further provided for by making each experiment station a depository of the Department of Commerce and the Bureau of Standards, and the work of each station shall conform to the standards established by the U. S. Government through said bureau, which may whenever practicable utilize the facilities of the station for the prosecution of research.

The need for standard test methods in the minerals beneficiation industry is growing with the increasing complexity of our processes and the more stringent requirements imposed on the quality and uniformity of our products. Although solutions of our problems have never been easy, they will become increasingly difficult to achieve unless we can develop a reliable and reproducible set of test methods. Historically speaking, our need was greatest for methods of chemical analysis. As these methods developed, they improved our ability to determine the grade of ore and measure the effect of our beneficiation attempts. The entire concept of grade and recovery is only as old as chemical analysis. Then came physical measurements. Each new concept in minerals beneficiation was related to certain properties and required corresponding test methods: specific density for jigging, magnetic susceptibility for magnetic separation, and tumbler strength for pellets. And associated with each process was the need for size determination. Size measurement is probably the first physical test ever conceived, and yet we are still improving on it. Dry sieving was quite acceptable for direct-shipping ores, but we had to go to wet sieving to control pelletizing and flotation. Subsieve analyzers have extended our routine measurements to the subsieve sizes, hut not below a few microns. As we all know, the solution of slimes- beneficiation and pollution-abatement problems is hampered by the lack of reliable and reproducible test methods in the fine-particle size range.

The best method for the estimation of copper in ores and secondary products is that proposed by Dr. Steinbeck* for the award offered by the Mansfeld'schen Ober-Berg-und Hutten-Direction. It is based upon the decolorization of the blue ammonia solution of copper by potassic cyanide.7 It is necessary for the accurate estimation of copper in arsenides that the arsenic be separated from the copper before the ammonia solution is made. The presence of a notable amount of arsenic renders the titration by potassic cyanide inaccurate, the end reaction being obscured by the appearance of a yellowish-green tint towards the end of the titration. The change of the color of the ammonia solution from blue to the tint caused by the presence of arsenic cannot be used for an end reaction, for the intensity and quick appearance of the latter color depend upon the amount of arsenic present in the solution. In the analysis of speise, the method of separating the copper by an oxidizing and reducing treatment in the muffle, to volatilize the arsenic, gives poor results, and there may easily be some loss of the weighed sample. The separation of the precipitated sulphides of arsenic and copper by treating with sodic sulphide, gives good results, but the process is tedious. I have used the two following methods, which are simpler and more expeditious than those mentioned, with good results

What is experience worth? Representatives from the Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum Societies discussed the question as part of the 1970 Annual AIME Meeting held in Denver, Colo. the week of February 15. Petroleum engineer-consultant, Michel T. Halbouty of Houston, Tex. offered his own clarification of present-day employer-employee relationships in engineering as a whole. "Longevity does not equal experience on the job. Further, when employees are considering salary increases and promotions, job performance is considered all the time; experience two- thirds of the time and length of employment one- half the time." He added, "worth is really what the employee can get for it and experience is essential to survival." Halbouty also noted that salary and responsibility is a function of man's value to his company and is about "as discrediting as grey hair." As far as the engineer is concerned, he reported, the company's ability to pay is, in large measure, not considered. From the company's viewpoint, however, the employee is expected to learn his first year on the job. His second year, he is expected to make his presence felt, Should he require three years to orient himself he might soon be looking for another job. The petroleum engineer pointed out that when the employee wants to know why the salary scale tends to plateau off in later years, most employers react by recognizing that employees "flatten themselves rather than the company flattening them."
