Recent advances in high-pressure water technology can be effectively employed in underground mining. The new equipment is based on standard industrial water cleaning hardware and is compatible with conventional mining techniques. Three viable applications are addressed: rock drilling, hole notching, and rock bolting. Highlights of test results are presented that were obtained in several underground mines during the last two years of development work.

The production of petroleum in Canada is relatively small in proportion to the amount of oil consumed. Production figures are given in Tables 1 and 2, which show that the production in Alberta for 1934 was more than for the whole of Canada in 1933. THE original trucks at Castle Dome were 30-ton Knuckeys with 150 hp, H-series Cummins engines and 15-ton Euclids with the same engines. The Euclids were used early in the operation, working with 2 1/2-yd Diesel shovels on stripping and later in opening new benches where the lack of room favored the smaller trucks because of their shorter turning radius. They have also been used on road building and similar jobs. On regular production, where the 30-ton trucks can be used, they are not economical.

An ore search for commercial titanium-bearing ore deposits is in progress by the Crane Co., manufacturers of valves, because they expect this metal to be important in valve manufacturing in the future. The company will eventually be mining and making titanium sponge. At present they are buying titanium tetrachloride from the Stauffer Chemical Co, at Niagara Falls and making titanium by reaction with magnesium. Production from the Babbitt concentrator of Reserve Mining Co. is scheduled to begin in late 1951 or early 1952. The capacity is to be 300,000 tons of pellets per year made from magnetic taconite concentrates.

The effect of water, acid and alkali washing on the surface properties of natural magnetite were investigated by microelectro-phoresis. The general control on the isoelectric point ([i]ep) of the natural magnetite that is effected by colloidal and adsorbed silicate species can be reversed by various acid/alkali washing procedures. Added aqueous silicate and aluminium ions lower and raise the [i]ep to values consistent with hydrous silica and alumina coatings respectively.

The committee on Papers and Publications has set Dec. 1, 1916, as the closing date for the receipt of manuscripts intended for this meeting. . Drilling operations in Nebraska during 1943 were reduced to approximately two thirds of the 1942 number. Twenty-seven wells were completed during 1943 and five wells were drilling at the close of the year. Eight of the completions, in provcn fields, were producers. The operations were distributed throughout the state as follows: eleven in Richardson County, four each in Buffalo and Harlan Counties, three in Furnas County, and single operations in Antelope, Butler, Dakota, Dawes, Gage, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee, Scotts Bluff and Sherman Counties.
