Secretary E. H. Benjamin, of the California Miners' Association, has proposed and begun, in co-operation with the testing laboratory of the University of California, at Berkeley, a series of tests which should prove of great interest and practical use to all persons making extensive application of steel wire cables, and especially to miners who run them in deep mines. Mr. Benjamin is endeavoring to obtain pieces of cable both new, and old and worn, from every deep mine of importance on the Pacific Coast, together with all the data obtainable concerning their manufacture and particular use. Pieces from each sample will be broken ill the laboratory before mentioned: and as far as possible the effects of winding around drums or pulleys ; of sudden starting and stopping when loaded; of heavy shocks, and of the general wear and tear of the cables, will be ascertained by these tests. The Olsen testing-machine of 200,000 pounds capacity will be used to break the cables, and the rupturing force, in different instances, will be applied slowly and also rapidly, in order to make the tests comparable as far as possible with the practical use of the cables themselves. All information and data available should be obtained for each specimen sent to the laboratory, the name of the manufacturer, the date of making, strength of cable when new and unrusted, as well as the circumstances and conditions of the practical use of the cable. Having this information before us, we shall be able to tell, approximately at least, the effects of age, rust, wear and tear, shocks, etc.; and perhaps be enabled to draw the line of limitation beyond which it would be no longer safe to use a cable of known manufacture. Moreover, by means of such tests we may, perhaps, he able to recommend worn cables for other uses, less severe in character, thereby prolonging the life of their effective usefulness. PHOSPHATE occurs in many places in Egypt,. in two main zones: one in Upper Egypt, along the Nile Valley, principally on the right side, and one near the Red Sea coast. In the Nile zone, the principal layers of phosphate rock are to be found: in the mountains east of Mahamid (right side of the valley); in the hills near Sibaiya, also called Sebaieh (both sides); in the hills of Agula, Hagaza and Gurn (right side); and further on, along the cancel road leading from Kena to Kosseir, a few miles east of Legheita's Oasis. Following, that track, after, having crossed the watershed, underlain by rocks like granite, serpentine, porphyry and diabase, one comes again to the Cretaceous formation containing considerable quantities of phosphate, at Gebel Duwi, Gebel Nakheil and Gebel Kosseir El Kadim, not far from the coast. More to the north, in the hills near Safaga Bay (Um El Uettat El Wasif) is another rich bed of the same formation. There are reports of phosphate existing near Suez and in the Sinai peninsula, and possibly some other zones can be traced or discovered in the future. The mines are well developed on the right bank of the Nile at Sharawna (near Sebaieh Station) and along the Red Sea coast, at' Safaga and near Kosseir. Prospecting work has been done at Gebel Duwi, Gebel Gurn, Agula, Hagaza, and near Mahamid. The phosphatic formation in Egypt is quite variable, not only from place to place, but even within small areas. The phosphate is all of Cretaceous age, as is proved by the fossils found in it. It is considered to belong to the Campanian or, more appropriately, to the Maestrichtian series. The principal fossils are: Alectryonia Villei Coq. sp.; Roudereia Auressensis Coq. sp.- R. Drui Mun. Chalm.; Trigonoarca multidentata, Newton.; Cardita libyca, Zittel; Libycoceras Ismäely, Zittel; Nautilus sp.; Ancystrodon libycum Dam.; Corax pristodontus Ag.; Lamma biauriculata Zittel sp. Above the Maestrichtian beds, we have the Danian series, unconformably covered by Lower Eocene beds. Under the phosphate is a grayish marly clay, and beneath this, bluish-gray scaly shales resting on the Nubian sandstone (Santonian).

Dear Sir: In connection with the official notice of Dr. Raymond's unanimous election by the Directors as Secretary Emeritus, we wish to place upon record certain statements concerning his services to the Institute which we think have not been published., and may not be generally known to the majority of our fellow-members. When the Institute was formed in 1871, Dr. Raymond acted as Secretary of the Founders' Meeting, and became the first Vice-President of the Institute, and, by request of the aged and beloved David Thomas, who was the first President of the Institute, Dr. Raymond discharged all the duties of the office of President, to which he was later formally elected in 1872, and which lip held for three years. During that time, he visited Europe, and through his acquaintance and reputation abroad, established those international relations of the Institute which proved so important in later years. He also enlisted the support of the mining engineers and metallurgists of the Pacific Slope, who would not otherwise have been disposed to join a society originating in the East. And for twelve years he attended; at his own expense, nearly every meeting of the Institute, wherever held, giving to it without remuneration his best service, and sacrificing for it many professional and private interests.

The failure of finely-divided sulfide particles to respond to flotation has resulted in a significant loss of our natural resources. As mentioned by Professor Arbiter, the overall recovery of copper from porphyry copper ores is generally between 80 and 85 percent. The recovery of copper sulfides from these ores is about 90 percent, the difference in these recoveries being due to failure of oxide copper minerals to respond to flotation. The 10-percent loss of sulfide copper has not been studied. Losses are known to be in the fractions finer than 74 microns, but the sizes that are not responding to flotation have not been established. In the case of molybdenite, however, it is known that particles finer than about five microns are not recovered. Work in other systems, notably the hematite-quartz system, has shown that good flotation of very fine particles from natural ores is possible (1, 2). The size distribution of one ore that was researched is given in Table 1, and as shown, approximately 50 percent of the ore was finer than 10 microns. Flotation experiments were conducted with this ore, which contained 45 percent iron, utilizing octyl hydroxamate as collector and without any desliming (1). The results of these experiments are presented in Table 2. From the standpoint of mechanisms of collector adsorption, similarities exist between those occurring in the hydroxamate-hematite system and many xanthate-sulfide systems. .This is, multilayers of ferric hydroxamate are present on hematite under flotation conditions (1,3).
