Mr. Juvkam-Wold's article is a timely and much needed presentation of the method of depressurization to reduce ground- water inflow into mine shafts. The article is very informative and discusses the effects of depressurization upon shaft inflows adequately. However, the article omits a discussion of another important benefit of depressurization: the reduction of potential for artesian burst or, as it is also called, floor heave. Confined aquifer systems (artesian aquifers) can contain water under several hundred pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure. A meeting of the New York Local Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, in joint session with the American Electrochemical Society, was held at the Engineering Societies Building, 29 West 39th Street, New York City, Nov. 20, 1913. Mr. Lawrence Addicks, Chairman of the American Electrochemical Society, presided at the meeting, in conjunction with Mr. Louis D. Huntoon, Chairman of the New York Local Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. The Chairman announced the subject to be discussed it the meeting as follows: As this is a joint meeting of the New York Sections of the Electro-chemical Society and the Institute, Mr. Huntoon has insisted that I share the responsibilities of the chair to the extent of introducing the speakers.

PLANS for development of the San Manuel ore- body have been worked out and are progressing parallel with construction of the surface plant. This property lies in the Old Hat mining district, Pinal County, Ariz., about a mile south of Tiger where the St. Anthony mine once produced gold, molybdenum, vanadidn, lead, and zinc. Two development shafts have been completed and serve as ingress for preparation of the 1475 haulage level and 1415 grizzly level. Three other shafts are being put down. The Nos. 3A and 3B shafts will provide the ore hoisting facilities. The No. 4 shaft, now being sunk, will be at the main mine service and supply yard, with primary function to provide the mine with supplies.

There were no easily identifiable tourists. Everybody carried attaché cases and sported the buttoned-down look in dress. They were all there at the Hotel Indonesia to make a deal. But deals don't come quickly over there and those that staved and persevered became bored. They clung to the air conditioning of the Hotel and sought hobbies to while away the weeks-and even months. It is not an easy life but it can pay off fog sonic company. The government officials are neither stupid nor lazy. They are new at their jobs. Many are ex-army men and they know they must learn before they can enter into a contract with confidence. So they take time, and time is on their side.

I desire to call the attention of the Institute to a new form of drawing-board trestle. With the ordinary four-legged trestle, commonly used, one has not the means of adjusting the height of the board to the draughtsman. To obviate this inconvenience, and at the same time to enable one to incline the board, I have devised an arrangement of curved and straight slots and thumb-screws, by means of which the hoard can be raised three or more inches, and placed at any desired angle of inclination on either side. Figures 2, 3 (Plate I) show side and end elevations of the trestle for a single board, and Figure 4 for two boards. The latter form is adapted for use in schools, or where it is desired to economize space.
