Phase transformations have been studied in Ag-Zn alloys quenched from the high-temperature bcc 0 phase and lying in the composition range 37.4 to 50.0 at. pct Zn. On quenching, the alloy with the lowest zinc content transformed to massive a (fcc); all other alloys formed the ordered (3' phase. On deformation, a martensitic reaction took place forming a close-packed structure. At Lou' zinc contents transformation to this structure was complete. However, above 43 at. pct Zn a p.rogressively increasing amount of ß' was retained following deformation. The close-packed structure was fcc at lower zinc contents (under 47 at. pct Zn) and either hcp or a mixture of fcc and hcp at high zinc concentrations. The structures produced by cold working were unstable and on aging transformed to the ß' phase or the complex hexagonal to phase. For low zinc contents (under 43 at. pct) the fcc st-ructure transformed directly to the equilibrium To phase. With higher zinc contents, some 13' was retained following defownation, and on aging the amount of this phase relative to the close-packed structure increased. On further aging both structures transformed cornpletely to PO. Metallographic examination indicated that the nature of the deformation product depended very markedly on the mode of deformation. Tensile deformation gave a microstructure characteristic of thermal martensite. KING and Massalski1 have shown that an alloy of Ag-50 at. pct Zn quenched from the high-temperature bcc ß phase undergoes a low-temperature ordering reaction forming ß' which can be retained to room temperature. On deformation an hcp phase is produced, although this is unstable and the structure reverts completely to ß' on aging. In the present paper, the work of King and Massalski is extended to cover a wide composition range in the p phase, observations being made of the structure of the quenched 13 and of the effects of deformation and aging. The relevant portion of the Ag-Zn phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. King and Massalski have shown that close to stoichiometry the ß' phase is the equilibrium structure at low temperatures. The approximate composition range of this phase, taken from a recent paper by Pops and Massalski,3 is shown on the phase diagram. The locations of atom sites are very similar in the ß' and to structures, and the 4, structure can be derived from the 0' structure by a small movement of atoms mainly in the direction of the cube diagonal.4'5 However, the probability of filling any particular atom site by a silver or a zinc atom is markedly different in the two structures. The structure can be considered partly ordered but the arrangement of the ordered atoms is completely different from that in the p' structure and transformation from ß' to requires a large fraction of the atoms to change position. It has been shown that the ß' transformation is thermally activated involving normal nucleation and growth processes.5,8 Massalski and Barrett7 have shown that in the Cu-Zn binary the (3 phase can be retained in the ordered state to room temperature over a wide composition range. On deformation a new close-packed phase is produced, the structure varying from fcc to a mixture of fcc + hcp to hcp alone with increasing zinc concentration. It appears that an ordering reaction is necessary to retain the bcc phase to room temperature. In CU-Ga,8 the bcc phase cannot be retained to low temperatures as it transforms by a massive reaction above the ordering temperature of the ß phase. The structure of the massive phase is very similar to that in Cu-Zn, varying from fcc to fcc + hcp to hcp with increasing zinc concentration. IN conjunction with a geological investigation of the silver-bearing veins at Contact Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, a survey was made with a Geiger-Müller counter of the gamma-ray emissions from the rocks in the vicinity of the mine workings. Discontinuous pitchblende veins have been encountered occasionally in the silver-bearing fissures, and the geophysical survey was undertaken with the hope that abnormally high gamma-ray intensities, if detected, might lead to larger and more continuous pitchblende discoveries. Before the instrument was used at. Contact Lake, preliminary tests were made, first with laboratory specimens at Princeton University, and later over known pitchblende deposits at the Eldorado property, LaBine Point, N.W.T. The Geiger-Müller counter, as adapted for field use, is described; the technique of transporting and operating the instrument is outlined; and the general precautions to be observed are discussed. The results obtained at Great Bear Lake show that the instrument is capable of detecting not only a pitchblende ore shoot in a shear zone, but also the mildly radioactive "host rock" at a considerable distance from the ore body. Hence, use of the Geiger-Müller counter is urged, not just for the detailed search for an ore body in a shear zone, but for the detection of possible radioactive "host rocks" in large-scale reconnaissance surveys of unexplored regions made by prospectors and members of federal geological survey parties.

Summarising a conference is never an easy task, but I will try to keep my comments brief and to the point. There are a number of lessons which we have learned from our deliberations together during these past three days, and I will try to give you my impressions of these lessons and of their practical implications in open pit mining. The first thing that has become increasingly obvious during these discussions is that it is no longer acceptable to offer an 'Act of God' as an excuse for a major slope or tailings dam failure. Disasters such as that at Aberfan in the United Kingdom have focussed the world's attention on the activities of the mining industry and the report of the commission set up to investigate the Aberfan disaster clearly showed that adequate knowledge was available and that failure to apply this knowledge did not qualify as an 'Act of God'. The courts and the world's press are certain to impose increasingly harsher penalties and criticism on those held responsible for major failures, particularly of tailings dams, in the future. One of the major problems in applying available knowledge to slope problems is that attempts to apply this knowledge are frequently left too late. To provide an engineering solution in the case of a slope in an advanced state of failure is an almost impossible task, and it is essential that those responsible for the stability of a slope must learn to recognise signs of distress at an early enough stage for effective remedial measures to be taken. As our ability to solve slope problems improves, the time at which slope stability problems are considered in a mining project must move forward to a stage at which these problems can be anticipated and dealt with before they arise. Conferences such as this are important in that they enable us to exchange ideas and advance our knowledge to a level at which such predictive engineering will be possible. It has been encouraging to hear of mining projects such as the Bougainville Copper operation where slope stability studies were carried out as part of the overall evaluation programme and it is hoped that this will become a more common procedure in the future. Providing a safe slope in an opencast mine obviously costs money, either in terms of the reduced ore to waste ratio given by flat slopes or because of the cost of stabilization techniques such as drainage or the use of rock anchors. An optimum slope design will provide maximum safety at minimum cost but achieving this optimum is not an easy task. Any one of us could design a slope which would be stable to the end of time, but it is probable that that slope would be so flat as to be totally uneconomic in most open pit mining situations. On the other hand, if the overall economics of a mining project are so critical as to require slope angles which the engineer responsible for these slopes considers to be unsafe, it is his duty to make us could design a slope which would be stable to the end of time, but it is probable that that slope would be so flat as to be totally uneconomic in most open pit mining situations. It is not a scientific name,, but rather a trade term, and does not indicate a correspondence with English splint. At present it is a popular word, and is very loosely applied to coals of various qualities, in the desire to improve their sale. The Kanawha splint is distinguished by its hardness, dull lustre, coarse fibrous structure, its purity, and especially its resistance to atmospheric influence. It kindles very readily, burns with a bright flame, but does not cake, so that a lump when half consumed, may be broken by a slight blow in its plane of cleavage, though 'it will resist a' strong blow in any other direction. Applications of the mathematical theory of plasticity promises to lead to the solution of many drilling and rock mechanics problems. ,Because of mathematical considerations, the inelastic behavior of rock has frequently been represented by a perfectly plastic model in conjunction with a yield criteria of the Coulomb or Mohr type. The totality of all stress states for which a solid ceases to behave elastically can be represented as a limit surface in stress space. ,Probing of such limit surfaces indicates details of strain hardening which are not provided by the standard triaxial testing procedure. Probing tests of the limit surfaces have been performed on Cardova Cream limestone to provide data for extending plasticity theory to cover situations in which consolidation and strain hardening are present. Test results indicate that this highly porous limestone undergoes a permanent volume decrease when it is subjected to hydrostatic pressures in excess of 3,500 psi. A virgin sample tested under a confining pressure of 1,500 psi has a yield strength of 1,700 psi; however, if the sample is subjected to a consolidation pressure of 5,000 psi, before testing at 1,500 psi, the yield strength is raised to 2,300 psi. Thus, both consolidation and strain hardening are important considerations in describing the mechanical behavior of this limestone. Tests conducted with the axis of the core having different orientations indicate that this rock is also anisotropic. Portions of the initial and subsequent limit surfaces are determined for samples loaded either perpendicular or parallel to the bedding planes. INTRODUCTION Previous experimental work in rock mechanics indicates that no mathematically tractable constitutive theory is inclusive enough to describe the mechanical behavior exhibited by all types of rocks under all conditions of stress and temperature. Indeed, the type of deformation encountered in a single type of rock is known to depend upon the stress and temperature conditions in the rock during deformation.l-5 Certain rocks and minerals, notably those minerals composed of ionic salts, have been shown to exhibit plastic deformation when tested under conditions of high confining pressure.2 Since the mathematical theory of plasticity provides simplifications over the theory of elasticity in certain types of problems, such as those in which limit analysis can be applied, it is of interest to know under what conditions plasticity theory may be applied to rock mechanics problems. The following factors determine the nature of the deformation a particular specimen will undergo: (1) the microscopic structure of the rock, i.e., the structure visible under an optical microscope, including number of phases, porosity, distribution of phases, (2) the mineralogical structure of the solid phases, (3) the conditions of stress and the rate of change of stress and (4) the temperature. Extensive experiments on Yule marble, Carthage marble, Solenhofen limestone and other calcerous rocks indicate that these relatively nonporous rocks deform plastically under certain conditions of loading, and creep under other conditions of loading.l-3 This study is concerned with the behavior of Cordova Cream limestone (Austin chalk) which is also composed almost entirely of calcite and thus has the same mineralogical composition but, because of a rather large porosity, it possesses a different microscopic structure. This investigation was undertaken to learn if Cordova Cream limestone deforms plastically despite the embrittling effect of the pore spaces, and to provide data which can be used to determine whether the mathematical theory of plasticity can describe the mechanical behavior of Cordova Cream limestone. A brief discussion is given of some of the underlying principles of plasticity theory concerning stress space and limit surfaces. Strain hardening is defined and a discussion is given of how the mechanical behavior of a material can depend on the previous history of the loading. Previous investigations have shown that the cold rolling textures1n2 and the drawn wire textures3 of copper change their secondary components after the addition of about 1 pct aluminum and 5 pct zinc, but do not change after the addition of as much as 30 pct nickel. However, few data are available on compression textures. Barrett4 reports from unpublished work with E. L. Layland that compression rolled copper develops a texture which is predominately (110) in the compression plane with a secondary spread to (113) and weaker spread to (100) as shown in Fig 1. However, 70-30 alpha brass similarly treated develops a texture again predominately (110) in the compression plane and with a weak secondary spread to {113} but with moderate (111) secondary intensities illustrated in Fig 2. Experimental Procedure Specimens of the compositions shown in Table 1 remaining from a previous investigation3 were annealed to a grain size of 0.090 mm average diam and machined to cylinders 0.20 in. diam and 0.20 in. high. Cylinders were compressed 90 pct reduction in height between lubricated steel blocks in a tensile machine. Glancing X ray photo-grams using copper K-alpha radiation were taken at an angle of 0 degrees to the compression surface. (111), (002) and (220) rings were analyzed to define the textures shown in Table 1. The results are in agreement with Barrett4 as to types of textures and are essentially in agreement with previous work1,2,3 as to the effects of composition. In the wire study3 it was reported that the 4.99 pct zinc alloy had a brass-type texture, while the data in Table 1 indicate a copper-type texture for compression. The wire specimen of the 4.99 pct zinc alloy was re-examined by X rays and it was established that the [loo] component still exists in the wire axis. Therefore, Table 2 of Ref. 3 is in error and should indicate a double [ill], [loo] copper-type texture for this alloy. This correction results in complete consistency with regard to compositional effects, namely that copper and its alloys containing up to approximately 1 pet aluminum, 5 pct zinc and at least 30 pct nickels develop a copper-type texture and more concentrated copper-aluminum and copper-zinc solid solution alloys will form a brass-type texture. Summary Compression textures developed in copper and its alpha solid solution alloys of aluminum, nickel and zinc are essentially the same types as those re- ported by Barrett4 with compositional effects occurring at approximately the same percent additions as previously reported for rolled sheet182 and drawn wire.3 The Scovill Manufacturing Co., Waterbury, Conn., furnished the copper and brass alloys, performed certain chemical analyses and supplied laboratory facilities where needed. PREVIOUS study' of simple impact systems indicated that energy required for fracture and size reduction of brittle materials is greatly dependent on the type of loading that is employed. In this regard it was postulated that fracture and size reduction of a brittle specimen might be accomplished by a high velocity impact at an energy level at which a low velocity impact would leave the specimen relatively undamaged. The finite time required to propagate energy away from the point of loading of an impacted object to other parts of the object and to its supports may permit a concentration of energy at the point of impact if the rate of loading is high. Localizing of energy at the point of impact could quickly initiate fractures that would propagate through the impacted material along with the traveling stress waves. As the cracks form, the initially absorbed strain energy would be released and portions of it travel ahead of the wack tips as stress waves. These secondary stress waves, combined with the initial stress waves derived from the impact, would produce high localized strain conditions in front of the fracture zone. The fracture zone would propagate and the specimen shatter. High rates of loading are brought about by short impact times, in turn obtained by employing high velocity projectiles that are of small mass compared to the impacted object. INTRODUCTION The determination of cloud points has to date been limited to rather transparent oils, visual observation of the formation of a solid phase being the criterion for the standard ASTM D 97-47 method. The need for a quiclc and simple method for determining cloud points under dynamic conditions for opaque crude oils became necessary in a study of fundamental aspects of paraffin deposition from crude oils. PREVIOUS WORK The determination of cloud points in opaque oils by viscosity temperature curves is fairly new, Young' described a method employing the capillary tube principle. No information exists relative to the determination of cloud points of crude or refined oils under dynamic conditions. Shock' noticed that deposition of paraffin from crude oils took place at temperatures at or below the temperature at which a sharp inflection point occurred in the viscosity-temperature curve. This observation indicates a possible correlation between this temperature and the cloud point of the crude oil. Reistle and Vietti1 have reported that when crude oils containing small amounts of asphaltic materials were heated to temperatures sufficiently high to solubilize these materials and immediately cooled the pour point of the crude oil was lowered as much as 70°F. Sachanen\ asribes this effect to the action of colloidal asphaltenes in preventing the formation of the crystalline structure necessary to maintain the oil in a rigid state. At high temperatures, asphaltenes are peptized, and the paraffin crystals formed at these temperatures adsorb the colloidal asphaltenes on their surface thereby hindering further growth of the crystals. Reistle" found, however, that such heating and cooling of crude oils had no effect upon the cloud points. This latter work dealt with a crude oil of fixed composition, and the question immediately arises as to the effect of varying the concentration of asphaltic materials on the cloud point. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE All viscosity measurements were made with a Bendix Ultra-Viscoson. The Bendix Ultra-Viscoson, which consists of a vibrating probe and an electronic computer. measures viscosity by exciting a thin alloy steel blade on the end of a probe by short electrical pulses in damped oscillation at 28 kilocycles. The blade vibrates longitudinally with an amplilude of less than 55 micron or 20 millionths of an inch. Energy to protlucc this excitation is generated in he computer and transferred to the probe through the connecting cable. The oscillating blade is magnetostric-tive, i.e., it is capable of transforming electrical energy to mechanical energy in the ultrasonic range. Ultrasonic waves are produced in the material surrounding the blade by the oscillating motion of the blade causing layers of the material to slip back and forth over one another at a known frequency. The electronic computer calculates the energy required to produce the sliding motion which is in turn proportional to the viscosity of the material. Actual values of viscosity times density (centi-poise X grams/cc) are indicated on the computer and a continuous D-C signal is provided which is fed into a type 153 Electronic Recorder (manufactured by Brown Instruments Div. of Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co.) The liquid sample container was fabricated from a Lucite cylinder and jacketed by a Luicite water bath. Early experiments using glass and steel sample containers were not satisfactory. since the Ultra-Viscoson was apparently affected by the alterzltion of the magnetic fields surrounding the probe by stresses set LIP in the glass and steel as it cooled. The procedure for determining viscosity-temperature curves was relatively simple. The temperature ot the sample was raised sufficiently high to solubilize all paraffin and asphalts present. CERTAIN physical and chemical properties of copper are so intimately related that a change in variation of the physical properties indicates a certain chemical change. The standard specifications of copper of the American Society for Testing Materials are based upon physical characteristics with one exception, namely, the copper contents. The physical standard includes electrical properties, defects in the "set or casting," variation in dimensions, weight, etc. Paragraph 4 of the specifications states, " Wire bars, cakes, slabs and billets shall be substantially free from ;shrink holes, cold sets, .pits, sloppy edges, concave tops, and similar defects in set or casting." Shrink holes and concave tops indicate both physical and metallurgical defects; cold sets, sloppy edges, etc., indicate physical defects only; small pit holes may be indicative of either or both physical and metallurgical defects, depending on conditions under which they originated. To the refiner, a copper casting, no matter how made, is known as a "shape," irrespective of whether it is wire bar, ingot, cake, slab, billet, etc. As practically all shapes are cast in an open mold, that is a mold without cope, the surface of the shape cools in contact with the atmosphere and has a coating of oxide. Certain phenomena of the surface indicate the adaptability of the metal for forging or rolling. The writer believes that it is much simpler to produce shapes that are metallurgically correct than those that are mechanically satisfactory. When copper is to be rolled into thin sheets or drawn into very fine wire, the slightest physical defect becomes evident. It is, therefore, of the utmost importance to, consider every characteristic of the shape and ascertain the physical and chemical relationship. LIEUTENANT MARTIN F. BOWLES Martin F. Bowles, born Apr. 25, 1893, at Bonne Terre, Mo., and graduated from the Neodesha, Kans., High School, had finished all but one month of a four-year course in metallurgical engineering at the Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Mo., when on May 12, 1917, he entered LIEUTENANT MARTIN F. BOWLES. the first Officers' Training Camp at Fort Riley, Kans. At the close of the training period, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and as¬signed to Co. B, 355th Infantry, 89th Division, and stationed at Camp Funston. He left this camp with his company on May 21, 1918, and sailed from an eastern port on June 4, arriving in England on June 15, 1918. After a short stay at a rest camp there, he proceeded to France. On August 14, he wrote that he was with Battalion Headquarters as Scout Officer, 1st Battalion, 355th Infantry, 89th Division. The last letter received from him, dated September 2, was written in his dugout and contained the following: "Here it is 2.45A. M. Sitting in a dugout

THE Agua Fria mine is in eastern Honduras at Lat. 140° 06' N., Long. 86° 36' W. Danli, the seat of the local municipal government, is the nearest town. The property is approximately 44 miles east of Teguci-galpa, the terminus of a truck road from the Pacific coast. The mine lies at an altitude of 3300 ft. with surrounding elevations as high as 6000 feet. For 20 years the oxidized croppings of the Agua Fria vein had been worked intermittently when in 1927 an attempt was made to open the property. A shaft was sunk 300 ft. and considerable ore was blocked out, but before a mill could be installed financial difficulties arose and the mine reverted to the original owners. Erle P. Halliburton, of Los Angeles, purchased the property in 1934. At that time a careful consideration of all factors involved showed that air transport was the only practical method of moving the equipment and machinery necessary to commence production. The other alternative was by muleback, which required sectionalizing all equipment to a maximum load of 200 lb., and during the rainy season this type of freighting was subject to serious delays. It was decided to purchase a trimotor Ford powered by three Pratt and Whitney Wasp B motors developing 400 hp. each. There were several reasons for the choice: (1) this type of plane was available at a reasonable price, owing to its replacement by faster models on most of the airlines in the United States; (2) the ship was capable of carrying a pay load of 3000 lb. over the required distance; (3) since this airplane had been widely used there would be no difficulty in securing competent personnel or in purchasing spare parts. It was necessary to rebuild the plane for cargo service. The windows were removed and the fuselage was entirely covered. A hatch was cut in the top of the fuselage to receive heavy crane loads and pieces of freight that were too large or too long to go through the rear door. The seats were removed and the interior of the plane was lined with Duralumin sheets. A heavy-duty landing gear was installed and the floor was reinforced.

USING a recently developed X-ray method, reported by Schulz,2 it is possible to make a rapid survey of the perfection of a single crystal at a particular surface. This technique has the advantage of allowing a large surface of a specimen to be examined by taking a single photograph and it compares well with other X-ray methods in regard to sensitivity of detection of small angle boundaries. During the course of a survey of the perfection of large crystals of aluminum produced by a number of methods, an examination has been made of a number of single crystals produced from the melt using a soft mold (levigated alumina)." Crystals grown by this method are known, from an X-ray study carried out by Noggle and Koehler,3 to contain regions where they are highly perfect. In the present work, it has been possible to obtain photographs showing directly the distribution of low angle boundaries at a particular surface of these crystals. single crystals were grown from the melt using the modified Bridgman method with a speed of furnace travel of -1 mm per min. These were about 1/10 in. thick, 1 in. wide, and several inches long. The metal was 99.99 pct pure aluminum supplied by the Aluminum co. of America. The crystals were examined by placing them at an angle of about 25° to the X-ray beam issuing from a fine focus X-ray tube of the type described by Ehrenberg and Spear4 and constructed by A. Kelly at the University of Illinois. A photographic film was placed SO as to record the X-ray reflection from the lattice planes most nearly parallel to the crystal surface. The size of the focal spot on the X-ray tube was between 25 and 40 u, and the distance from the X-ray tube focus to the specimen (approximately equal to the specimen to film distance) was -15 cm. White X-radiation was used from a tungsten target with not more than 35 kv in order to reduce the penetration of the X-rays into the specimen. Exposure times were approximately 1 hr with tube currents between 150 and 250 microamp. The type of photograph obtained from these crystals is illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows a number of overlapping reflections from the same crystal. The large uniform central reflection is traversed by sets of horizontal white and dark lines. These two sets run mainly parallel to one another. Lines of one color are wavy in nature and often branch and run together. Large areas of the crystal surface show no evidence of these lines whatsoever. The lines are interpreted as being due to low angle boundaries in the crystal, separating regions which are tilted with respect to one another. A white line is formed when the relative tilt forms a ridge at the interface and a black line is found when a valley is formed. In a number of cases, the lines stop and start within the area of the reflection and often run into the reflection from the edge, corresponding to a low angle boundary starting from the edge of the crystal. The prominent lines run roughly parallel to the direction of growth of the crystal although narrow bands can run in a direction perpendicular to this; see Fig. 2. Although they may change their appearance slightly, the lines tend to occur in the slightly,Same place in the X-ray image and to maintain their rough parallelism when the crystals are reduced in thickness by etching. Thus the low angle boundaries can occur at any depth within the crystal. The appearance of the lines is unaffected by subjecting the crystal to rapid temperature changes, such as plunging into liquid nitrogen or rapid quenching from 620°C. From the width of the lines on the x-ray reflection, values can be found for the angular misorienta-tion of the two parts of the crystal on either side of a boundary. The values found run from 1' to 10' of arc, but values of UP to 20' have sometimes been found, e.g., the widest lines on Fig. 2. These mis-orientations are much less than those commonly found in crystals possessing a lineage structure. When a number of a and white lines occur, running in a roughly parallel direction across the image of a Crystal, the total misorientation corresponding to lines of one color is approximately equal to that corresponding to lines of the other color. The interpretation of the lines as due to low angle boundaries has been checked in a number of ways. Photographs taken with different specimen-to-film distances distinguish lines due to low angle boundaries from effects due to surface relief of the specimen. Normal Laue back-reflection photographs, taken with the beam irradiating an area of the surface showing a number of the lines, show white lines running through each Laue spot. Black lines are set to see by this method. X-ray photographs were also taken, using the set-up described by Lam-one et al.5 when the beam straddles regions giving rise to lines in the Schulz pattern, split reflections are observed within the Bragg spot. The misorienta-tions calculated from the separation of these reflections and that found from the widths of the lines on the schulz technique patterns show good agreement. In previous classifications of coal, it has been customary to regard moisture eliminated from coal samples between 20 and 100 C. as extraneous matter, rather than as a constituent part of the coal. It seems, however, that the physical character and use properties of the low-rank coals are directly related to the amount of such moisture present, and recent chemical work has shown' that such coals contain unstable groupings which decompose between 20 C. and temperatures somewhat above 100" C., with the splitting off of moisture. According to this view, the moisture eliminated from air-dried coal below boiling point is similar in all essential respects to moisture eliminated above 100" C., and is produced by analogous reactions; and inasmuch as the moisture given off above 100" C. has always been treated as a constituent of the volatile matter of coal, it would seem that consistent usage would include as a part of the volatile matter all moisture present as an essential component of the coal as it occurs in nature. As a matter of experience, it seems clear that the general physical and chemical characteristics of the low-rank coals are largely determined by or related to the moisture, whether chemically or physically combined, present in air-dried coal; it is also demonstrable by trial that the low-rank coals cannot be satisfactorily classified on a purely chemical basis by using the moisture free form of analysis. The low-rank coals of the western United States include numerous well-defined types, many of which were referred to in a classification proposed by Ashley,2 in which the physical and use properties of the coals were made the primary basis for their systematic grouping. When testing this classification by replotting analyses of these type coals according to the Seyler scheme of classification,3 a satisfactory parallelism between use properties and chemical constitution of the dry coal was found among

The opening session was held on Tuesday evening, October 23d. Mr. J. F. Lewis, on behalf of the local committee of arrange ments, made a short address of greeting to the members assembled, and then introduced Gov. A. H. Holley, of Lakeville, Conn. Gov. Holley addressed the Institute as follows: Gentlemen, we give you cordial welcome to a mining, manufac turing, and agricultural country, of which we are not a little proud. We welcome you as an association, and as individuals. We invite you to an inspection of our resources, and to our methods of im proving them. We appreciate the results of your efforts in past years, and we anticipate good from your advice and counsel in the future. You are in the vicinity of some of the oldest mining and manufacturing operations in iron in our country. It will be our pleasure to conduct you to a mine which was worked for more than a half century before our country achieved national inde pendence, and to point out to you the spot where the products of this mine were wrought into cannon and shot during the progress of our Revolution. We can show you also a far larger area of mining country than was supposed to exist in this vicinity at that early day. There are, within a radius of thirty miles from this spot, ten mines at least that have been extensively worked, and there are as many more that have been occasionally worked, with a fair degree of success. All the mines that are wrought to any extent produce excellent qualities of iron, while many of them in various combinations produce as good material for the manufacture of steel, car wheels, axles, and many other purposes, as can be found in ally country. The old Salisbury iron retains its reputation for tensile strength unsurpassed, when made entirely from the ore of the old mine. The progress that has been made in the development of these mines since the days of the pickaxe, when the product was trans ported in pounds upon horseback, to those of the steam-engine, which now moves hundreds of tons per day, presents, indeed, a

A criterion for stability of a lamellar structure in two-phase alloys ulas derived froflr perturbation analysis of the steady-state solutions for eutectic growth. Both the mass and thermal diffusion were considered with boundary conditions for coupled lamellar growth. The concept of an effective liquidus slope was introduced. Excellent agreement was found with the experiments of Mollard and Flemings and the theory predicted a range of compositions on one side of the eulectic composition in which stable growth may occur with zero temperature gradient. The lamellar structure was found to be more stable than predicted by simple constitutional supercooling. The effect of impurity additions was also considered. DIRECTIONALLY solidified eutectic alloys may have a structure consisting of parallel plates or rods. It is important to know the range of composition and growth conditions that produce this ideal composite structure. Breakdown of the planar solid-liquid interface during growth may lead to a dendritic or cellular structure as in single-phase alloys. In the case of single-phase alloys, the concept of constitutional supercooling1 may explain breakdown, but in two-phase alloys the concept is no longer valid because the melting point is not given by the liquidus of one phase. Both phases must be considered in the mass and thermal diffusion problem. In the following theory a boundary condition at the solid-liquid interface was determined by using the steady-state equations of Jackson and ~unt' to relate the average temperature and composition of the liquid at the interface. Then a sinusoidal perturbation in the shape of the interface was introduced to test for stability as in the analysis of Mullins and ~ekerka.~ The wavelength of the important perturbation was assumed to be much larger than the lamellar spacing, h, and the perturbation was assumed not to change the lamellar spacing, A. Both the mass and thermal diffusion equation were used with averaged quantities at the boundary to determine whether the perturbation grows or shrinks in time. A stability criterion was determined by considering the case in which the perturbation remains stationary. An example of Pb-Sn alloys was used to illustrate the validity of this theory. I) THEORY A) Temperature at the Interface. The temperature of the interface in coupled two-phase growth is close to the eutectic temperature TE even for alloys off eutectic composition. It is assumed that the interface is in local equilibrium and one expects the temperature at the intersection of the liquid phase and the solid phases a and 0 to be near the eutectic temperature. The interface is undercooled because of curvature and the deviation of the composition in the liquid from the eutectic composition. The average interface temperature Ti for steady-state growth of a lamellar eutectic with a plane interface was determined by Jackson and Hunt' as given in their Eq. [17c]. Instead of using the ratio of the lamellar widths hp/h, as a parameter, the volume fraction of the 0 phase, +, will be used as it simplifies the algebra. The average interface temperature using this notation becomes: The average temperature of the interface depends on the volume fraction of the 0 phase, +, which may be related to the composition of the solid or the bulk composition of the liquid Co by: where C, and Cp are the average compositions of the solid phases. In steady-state growth, the composition of the solid is equal to the composition in the liquid far from the interface. The variation of the average interface temperature with composition is illustrated in Fig. 1 for the case of Pb-Sn alloys with a 10"4 cm lamellar spacing as calculated from Eqs. [I] and [2]. The interface temperature goes through a maximum at a composition near but not exactly at the eutectic composition. Pressure control of oil wells may be defined as the adjustment of pressures within a well to obtain the most efficient and economic utilization of the natural gas energy with a minimum of sand troubles or irregular water encroachment. The purpose of this paper is to present the methods used by the writers in applying pressure control and a discussion of the various effects occurring within the wells affected. The benefits to be derived from the conservation of natural gas energy have been so adequately discussed and demonstrated in prior papers by various engineers that the effects on ultimate production will not be discussed other than to mention a few representative cases. The detrimental effects of irregular edge-water encroachment and of sanding up arc of general knowledge to the industry. Effect on Ultimate Production One of the strongest objections voiced against pressure control is that of the danger or inadvisability of deferring oil production by cutting the rate of production. It has been our experience that such deferred product'ion is returned within a few weeks or months rather than years and that an increased cumulative oil production is obtained in the early life of the well by conserving the natural energy. In many cases the rate of production is increased rather than decreased by the adjustment of pressures to obtain the minimum gas factor. Fig. 1 shows the history of a Wilcox sand well in northern Oklahoma, which was pressure-controlled from completion. It is noted that during the early months while flowing naturally through the casing the gas factor was decreased rather than allowed to follow its natural tendency to increase. A string of 21/2-in. tubing was run to restrict the flow and resulted in a decreased gas factor with a more sustained rate of production. When first placed on gas-lift the gas factor again tended to increase, but after the proper pressure adjustments were made, remained approximately steady. It was necessary to defer 100 bbl. per day of oil production in order to maintain this low gas factor. In March serious

William Hague, whom we said good-by to hardly more than a month ago-—so clean, ao young, so strong—who, abandoning the professional career in which he had won such commendation and which held for him such promise, leaving his wife and his little boy to whom he was so dear, answered at once the call for men of his training, and is now dead "in the service of his country." There are many friends of that courtly and dignified gentleman James D. Hague who recall, both here and in Stockbridge, the parental pride in the promising lad of such a little time ago—the eager schoolboy at Milton, the rather grave youth at Harvard, his entry into new experiences in the Western mining world, and who, seeing him during his stay at Camp Upton, realized that the old Puritan stock was still sound and true—and now with him the struggle is over and the sacrifice made. Captain William Teasdale Hall Captain Hall, who was admitted to Junior Membership in the Institute in 1915, while still a student of mining at the University of Toronto, was killed in action in France on May 19, 1917. Captain Hall was born in Toronto in 1893, and received his academic training at Harbord College, from 1908 to 1911, when he entered the University of Toronto, School of Practical Science. During the three summer vacations of his university course, he was employed by the O'Brien mine at Gowganda, next by the McIntyre Mining Co., at Porcupine, and finally by the Mines Branch of the Geological Survey, which was conducting magnetic surveys to the north of Port Arthur. When war was first declared, Mr. Hall endeavored to join the artillery as an officer, and for the purpose secured a provisional lieutenancy with a Hamilton battery, but he did not receive an overseas appointment, and on being graduated as a mining engineer in 1915, he was offered a position in Chile, which he accepted. He left Toronto on May 27, 1915, and was engaged in Chile as a mining engineer for nearly a year. In the latter part of April, 1916, he decided to offer himself again for service at the front. He crossed the Andes and sailed for LiverpooI, where he landed on May 13, 1916. On May 27, 1916, Captain Hall was given a commission as a lieutenant in the Royal Flying Corps, 21st Squadron. He went to the front on Sept. 1, 1916, and remained there continuously. His

Although adequate removal of cuttings from beneath a drill bit is important for efficient drilling operations, very little basic data are available relative to the fundamentals of chip removal by hydraulic jets. A discussion is presented in this paper of an experimental investigation of the jetting action of hydraulic jets in removing loose particles from the bottom of a cylindrical hole. Conditions for which the jet is no longer capable of removing chips from the bottom of the hole are determined. This situation represents equilibrium between the chip removal force and chip Bolddown forces such as gravity and pressure. In most of the tests loose particles were jetted with water or a water-glycerine mixture to determine the dependence of chip removal on hole size, jet size, height of jet off bottom of hole, flow rate, particle density and fluid viscosity. ,A test with a pressurized mud system indicated that relatively low pressures can completely overcome the removal action of a hydraulic jet. Although the system studied herein is not directly applicable to a rotary drill bit, the work with such simplified systems can provide a better understanding of the chip removal action of jets, and with logical extensions it may provide a reasonable basis for the best use of fluid jets in drilling. INTRODUCTION The primary deterrent to maximum drilling rates is the inability of the drilling system to remove rock cuttings efficiently enough to prevent interference with the drilling action.1-2 The objective of chip removal studies is to permit predicting and controlling removal forces under downhole drilling conditions. Conditions at the bottom of a hole during rotary drilling are exceedingly complex and are not likely to be described in a quantitative way by investigations in terms of the total drilling action until a better understanding is developed of the simplified components of the problem.3 The present study is concerned with the elementary condition of removal of chips by a single central jet. Even this relatively simple model provides mathematical difficulties because of the turbulent nature of the flow from the jet and because of the shape of the bottom of the hole beneath the jet. Theoretical and experimental studies have been made of turbulent jets impinging normally on an infinite body and deductions based on analytical solutions to simplified problems can give some insight into the problem of cutting removal by a jet. However, because of the present lack of understanding of the behavior of the interaction between the fluid jet and the chips being removed, an experimental approach was chosen for the present study. Methods have been developed for maximizing hydraulic horsepower, impact force and jet velocity; but whether maximizing these parameters maximizes chip removal with present drilling bits has not been demonstrated. Simplifying the problem of chip removal may make it possible to develop some understanding of the manner in which the jet velocity is dissipated. Better understanding of a simple case should materially assist in extending analysis to more complicated cases. Thus, we are not concerned in the present study with the rock fracturing process itself but only with the removal of the debris from the bottom of the hole. A problem which is quite similar to the chip removal problem is the suspension of solids in stirred vessels. This problem has been studied by the chemical industry and correlations have been obtained by dimensional analysis which permit the design of mixing vats7 An approach similar to that used in the mixing vat problem is used in the analysis of the jetting data in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The test equipment arrangement shown sche-matically in Fig. 1 allows the jetting action to remove particles until an equilibrium height is attained for each combination of hole size, jet size and flow rate.*** Equilibrium conditions require that the removal force is unable to remove additional particles.
