The University of Illinois, by Prof. H. H. Stock, professor of mining engineering, sent out to its mining students a long letter urging them to attend a Chicago meeting of the Institute. It stated that the University Council authorized the remission of the registration fee for sophomore, junior and senior mining engineers who would attend the meetings and present a written account of the sessions and excursions attended. Young engineers are rarely flushed at the beginning of their careers but if they ever expect to amount to anything at the end of 10-years-they are going to regret that they have not long been a member of the Insti-tute. So that the slogan "Do it now" is snore than particularly appli-cable in their cases and nothing will better indicate to them the scope of the Institute's work and the advantages which they are to get from mem-bership than attendance at one of the big meetings of the Institute and the preparation of a written report on the sessions and excursions attended to be returned to the University.

Discussion of the paper of PHILIP W. HENRY, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 1915, pp. 23 to 30. C. ,E. GRUNSKY, JR., San Francisco, Cal. (communication to the Secret ary*).-The difference of opinion of engineers on the subject of depreciation is justified, to some, extent, by the many viewpoints from which such a subject can be considered when applied to properties of widely differing physical characteristics. Mr. Henry takes up the subject of depreciation as applied alone to oil properties, and in doing so makes a clear distinction between amortization and the repair or renewal requirement. After carefully reading the paper the purpose of its author in suggesting a "depreciation" reserve or fund to keep the property at a constant value does not seem clear. As shown by Mr. Henry, the depreciation element as compared with the operating expense per gallon of oil is very large because of the comparatively short life of the oil properties, and it is also evident that such a "depreciation" fund would in a short time contain a very large amount of money. It seems desirable and permissible in income-tax matters to take into account the depreciation of property and to separate from the income such money as is necessary to amortize the invested capital to an extent warranted by the depreciation. However, it does not seem either necessary or desirable to create a large fund which will in time approximate the entire invested capital and which may he invested by the directors, as Mr. Henry suggests, "in the property itself or in outside securities." This method seems cumberome and liable to offer in the reinvestment of such a fund temptations to a directorate that might show more devotion to its own interests than that of the stockholders. A reserve fund is very frequently desirable in mining and oil operations, but to keep up a fund of this magnitude or to reinvest it in outside securities does not seem desirable from a stockholders' standpoint. The. money withdrawn from the receipts to be placed in the depreciation fund (not including replacements and the drilling of new wells necessary to keep up the productiveness) should he returned to the stockholders of the company, not as dividends, but as an amortization of the invested capital.

IT has long been known that the density of a metal usually decreases with cold-work. Thus O'Neill1 observed as early as 1861 that cold hammering of commercial hot-rolled copper is accompanied by a decrease of density of 0.2 per cent, and that subsequent annealing restores the original density. The origin of this density change, however, has remained obscure. In particular, experiment has not yet decided whether it is due to the presence of small cavities and an increase in intergranular surface or to an actual expansion of the lattice itself. This uncertainty in the origin of the change in density is a reflection of our uncertainty as to the changes induced in a metal by cold-working. One school regards cold-working as a breaking up of the original grains into a large number of perfect crystallites somewhat randomly orientated with respect to one another.2 According to this viewpoint, the mere introduction of a large intercrystallite surface induces a net volume expansion. Another school regards cold-working primarily as a distortion of the grains. It is not obvious that this second viewpoint will lead to a net volume expansion. The purpose of the present paper is to show that this is indeed the case, and that this expansion is of the right order of magnitude to explain existing experimental data. The physical basis for the association of an expansion with distortion lies essentially in the variation of the elastic moduli with volume. This variation is considerable. Thus from Table I we see that a I per cent increase in volume for the case of copper will decrease the bulk modulus K by 10 per cent, the shearing modulus µ by 3.8 per cent. If we thus twist a rod through a given angle, we shall do less work upon it if it increases slightly in volume, thereby reducing the torsion modulus that involves as a factor the shearing modulus. A general principle' in physics states that the rod will so adjust itself as to have a minimum potential energy consistent with the end restraints. It will therefore expand. [ ] In order to obtain a quantitative comparison with experiment, we follow Maier4 in comparing the lattice expansion with the latent energy of cold-work. This latent energy has been measured directly by Taylor and Quinney5 on copper rods subjected to torsion, and may amount to as much as 15 per cent of the total work done upon the specimens. A variety of chemicals offered by Armak were evaluated as dewatering aids for aqueous slurries of silica sand, sparsand and feldspar; an established commercial dewatering aid was used as a control. A number of Armak’s potential dewatering aids yielded lower moisture retention values than did the commercial product on all of the mineral samples. In addition to the chemical dewatering evaluations, some of the mechanisms involved in the removal of water from these mineral samples were examined.

INVESTIGATORS in the areas of plasticity, crystal growth, and stress analysis have a need for crys-tallographic data such as the interplanar angles. This information is utilized in the form of a stereo-graphic projection from which orientation determinations can be made. Calculations of mechanical properties, such as the critical resolved shear stress, require values for the angles between directions as well as the interplanar angles. Only a limited amount of this data is available for tetragonal crystals. The equations for these angles are relatively simple but because of the large numbers of angles involved and the infinite number of structures that could be investigated, it was decided to program these calculations on a high speed digital computer. IT was recently shown1 that slip bands can be observed in bent germanium crystals after deformation, by means of etch pits along the slip traces. It is the purpose of this note to show how chemical etch pits can also be usedto examine the appear- ance of slip bands in silicon, as well as other deformation markings. A 30 ohm-cm, p-type single crystal bar, 2x1/4x1/8 in., was plastically bent at approximately 1200°C in a vacuum of 1x10-5 mm Hg. The axis of the crystal was coincident with a <III> direction, and the surface normal to the axis of bending was within 4" of a (110) plane. If it be admitted that the use of the metric system of measurement is desirable, and that it will be well, as urged by one of our engineering societies, to show upon all our plans or drawings a metric scale in addition to a scale of inches, then it becomes important to introduce some ready means of drawing these scales. For many present purposes it is quite sufficient to space off and to draw them with the common dividers and the right-line pen, but if the number of drawings made or copied in an engineer&apos;s office, and upon which scales must be shown, is more than two or three daily, then some more mechanical or automatic means should be provided. For a great majority of detail drawings, a simple transcript of the surface of a good two-foot rule would answer every purpose, and probably the best comparative showing of the metric scale would be made by drawing a line of millimeters close by the side of the line of sixteenths. The death of Privy Councilor Bruno Kerl, on March 25, 1905, terminated a distinguished and useful career. Bruno Kerl was born March 24, 1824, at St. Andreasberg in the Harz, and entered in 1840 the mining school of Claus-thal, where he studied for three years, working at the same time in the mines and stamp-mills. After an additional year of practice in the silver-reduction and iron-works of the Upper Harz, he passed his examination as a metallurgical graduate, and studied for a gear at Göttingen under Wöhler in chemistry, Hausmann in mineralogy, and eminent teachers in other branches. In 1846 he was employed at the Oker works, but very soon left this post, to become a tutor in chemistry, metallurgy, etc., at Clausthal, where he continued to labor until 1867. During this period the Clausthal school became a completely equipped Mining Academy, and Kerl was made in 1862 a full professor. Meanwhile, in addition to the work of instruction, he discharged, simultaneously or successively, the duties of many responsible official positions in the Royal Hanoverian administra-

Rock mechanics as a guide to a safe underground operation is gaining importance as more is under- stood of rock behavior under stress and of the competency of rock after blasting. The U. S. Bureau of Mines&apos; Twin Cities Mining Research Center and White Pine Copper Co. personnel undertook a joint research program recently to define how the rock adjacent to a newly opened underground working could be left as undisturbed as possible. The goal was to leave a competent structure which would tend to limit rock falls and thus decrease the incidence of fatalities from this greatest of all underground hazards. High-amplitude stress waves and borehole gases create a crushed zone in the rock, the thickness of which is about equal to the borehole radius. Beyond the crushed zone, additional structural damage occurs to the rock from the microstructural level up to visible fractures that may extend several feet. This type of rock damage near the final excavation lines reduces rock strength and increases the possibility of failure of the openings from subsequent vibrations or stresses.

Bethlehem, Pa.-In discussing the question personally with Mr. Matteson I have found that he simply proposed this as a suggestion and he recognizes, as well as a great many other oil geologists and oil operators, that to put into practice such a suggestion would mean the overcoming of many difficulties. Yet perhaps it may be possible to overcome the various objections that may be offered. Undoubtedly one of the most serious objections is that of incomplete and inaccurate well records. Faulty records are worse than no records at all. Perhaps, however, definite instructions and insistence on their observation may remedy this defect after a time. THE CHAIRMAN (M. L. REQUA, San Francisco, Cal.).-This subject is a. very important one, but just how far the National Government can go in .taking action is a question: It involves, of course, the question of State rights. California, I .think, has done very well up to date and probably will do better in the future. The law that was passed at the session of the Legislature 2 years ago is working as satisfactorily as anything of that kind can work with so little experience to guide the framers of the statute. We recognize in California the vital necessity of conserving the oil of the State. We have come to the conclusion that there is not as much oil ,in California as we thought there was. In the month of December the State drew on its oil stocks to- the extent of 1,800,000 bbl. and I think that the January statistics will show probably as much more. There is more or less of a.: panic at the present time among the large marketing concerns regarding the question as to where they are going to get their oil for future requirements

These are exciting times for the coal mining community. Although the industry is in the middle of a healthy boom, there are strong forces tending to counteract or at least temper the rate of growth. There are many pushing and pulling factors of interest to mining people, and a few salient ones will be mentioned here. Primarily because of a tremendous demand for energy, a demand that can&apos;t be met by other fuels, the coal industry is in boomsville. Another contributing factor to this situation is the increased overseas demand for metallurgical coal. These demands are being counteracted by a lack of people, the lead-time required to develop new capacity and wildcat strikes, among other things.

The John Fritz Medal was awarded in January, 1916, to Dr. Elihu Thomson, "For -Achievements in Electrical Inventions, in Electrical Engineering, and in Industrial Development, and in Scientific Research." The medal will be presented to Dr. Thomson at a meeting, to be held in Boston on Friday evening, Dec. 8, 1916, in the Central Lecture Hall of the new buildings of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The program of the evening will include adresses by John J. Carty, Chairman of the Presentation Committee of the Board of Award, E. W. Rice, Jr., President, General Electric Co., and Dr. Richard C. Maclaurin, President, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The presentation will be made by Dr. Charles Warren Hunt, Chairman of the Board at the time the award was made, and the ceremonies will conclude with the response of Dr. Thomson. The John Fritz Medal is awarded from time to time for notable scientific or industrial achievement, and was provided for in a fund subscribed in memory of the great engineering pioneer, John Fritz. The award of the medal is made by a permanent board composed of four members from each of four American National Engineering Societies, namely, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. EAKLE, Berkeley, Cal.-At the old Morning Star mine in Alpine County, where large masses of enargite were found some years ago, I looked particularly for evidences of replacement of pyrite by the enargite. While I have not made a particular study of any of the specimens, I judge that the pyrite and enargite were precipitated together. They were both primarily in those rocks. Of course, by using Mr. Graton&apos;s method of determination we might possibly find a situation somewhat different, but I should say that the enargite is not replacing the pyrite, but was simply precipitated at the same time. The bodies occurred there within 50 ft. of the surface, so it is probably not a case of secondary enrichment. H. W. TURNER, San Francisco, Cal.-In the case where secondary chalcocite shows a crystalline structure and cleavage lines, what is the evidence of the secondary nature of it? C. F. TOLMAN, Stanford University, Cal.-You can find practically all the evidences we have discovered in the microscopic study of ores. You can find all stages in the process of replacement of earlier minerals, especially bornite, by chalcocite, from a stage, in which the process has but just started with only occasional fragments of chalcocite set in bornite, to a stage where remnants of bornite are set in chalcocite. The replacement may take place along the cleavage lines or along the crystallographic directions of the earlier mineral, or it may take place irregularly. In one type of replacement you may find in one spot a few cross-cutting veins, and in another spot the latter may be so enlarged that there remain only a few individual specks of the replaced mineral.

THE success of various operations in the manufacture of optical glass depends, in a large measure, on the ability to maintain proper heat control. A good pyrometer system is, therefore, a very necessary part of the equipment needed. Men of long experience in dealing with high temperatures, who have acquired through constant practice the ability of judging approximate temperatures by means of color, are undoubtedly valuable, but even the most competent are not as reliable as a good pyrometer system. They admit that their ability to judge accurately varies from day to day and that their judgment is affected considerably by the condition of the sky, whether it is clear or cloudy. Besides, where it is a matter of only a few weeks to train a man to operate a pyrometer system, it takes about as many years to train him to judge temperatures by the state of incandescence. The pyrometer outfit in use in the glass plant of the Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. consists of the following: Platinum elements, optical pyrometers; base-metal elements, indicators, potentiometers, and recording pyrometers. Platinum Elements and Optical Pyrometers.-Temperature control in - the melting operation is of such great importance that it is very desirable to know the exact temperatures, relative temperatures being of little value. The use of the platinum element is to determine the rate of heating or cooling of the furnace. The platinum couple is installed in either the crown or the wall of the furnace. It is placed first in a porcelain protecting tube and this is placed in a permanently fixed fireclay tube projecting from 1 1/2 to 2 in. into the fire-chamber. It has been found impractical to use the platinum couple for determining exact temperatures of the melting furnace, for the platinum element deteriorates rather rapidly at the high temperatures used, 2500° to 2700° F. This chapter describes the rock mechanics studies performed for a high cut at a nuclear power station in Pennsylvania. Two units presently are being constructed on the Susquehanna River. When these units are completed, they will generate approximately 2100 MW of electricity. It was necessary to excavate about 1 million cu yd of rock to prepare the site. This excavation resulted in a high cut on the west and north sides of the station area with a maximum height of about 200 ft. The location of the high cut with respect to the plant facilities is shown on Fig. 1. The recommended slope angles ranged from 1 ½ (horizontal) to 1 (vertical) for the upper residual soil to ½ to 1 for the deeper competent rock. Because of the significant height of this cut and the fact that the slope is immediately adjacent to the proposed nuclear facilities, extensive stability analyses were performed prior to, during, and after excavation to evaluate the steepest angle at which the slopes could be safely cut. The studies consisted of evaluating both qualitatively and quantitatively all apparent factors which could affect the stability of the slopes. These factors include the strength of the material, the zones of weak material which are present along the planes of schistosity, the prominent joint systems, the ground water, and postulated seismic effects. It is generally realized and very often admitted by both producers and consumers of coal that there is great need for a revision of existing commercial classifications, and this will involve, of course, determination of a standard classification and a constant revision of marketing practices as they are affected by coal classification. I recently sent out some 200 letters to producers and consumers with a request for their views on the subject of commercial classification. Nearly all of the replies from both sides were that there was needed some change in the present method. There were three or four dissenting voices but the great majority of opinion was in favor of the formulation of some standard commercial classification. The classifications in commercial use today can best be described as a hodgepodge. They are made upon different bases, have different names and have different ways. There are, for instance, about 11 single bases of classifications as used commercially and some 17 or 18 combination bases. Then there were the Tidewater Pool Exchanges. The classification which they put in force is still used in the tidewater markets and has several different bases of its own. It will be considerable of an undertaking to bring about a change in marketing methods as affected by coal classification but it is well worth doing and I think the committee which has been appointed under the auspices of the American Society for Testing Materials realizes the importance of the subject and is on the way to at least bring about some provision for adjusting matters. By way of starting, each member of the Committee on Commercial Classification has been assigned to a general market district and each member is now engaged in collecting the commercial market practice data for submission at the next meeting of the Committee. About a year ago I made up a list of the commercial classifications in the different markets and the total was 171. The 11 single bases I found used in commercial practice were:

THE failure to detect any change in the thermal properties of cobalt at the Curie point would appear to indicate that the apparatus may have a limited sensitivity. The Curie temperature has been determined by direct methods to be 1121+3°CP and 1131°C.3 The specific heat has been determined many times&apos;.&apos; and weighted values are given in Table I. The allotropic transformations in iron and titanium, used by the authors to test the experiment method, involved a volume change of the order of 3 pct on going from the close-packed to the body-centered-cubic lattice. These energy changes are likely to be much larger than those involved in a diffusionless transformation from a hexagonal to a cubic-close-packed lattice. However, it has been pointed out that thermal observations are unreliable in the detection of phase changes when these are near a Curie point.&apos; James 0. McCaldin and Pol Duwez (authors&apos; reply)—The sensitivity of the present technique is limited to first-order transformations, so that gradual changes in specific heat, e.g., in the vicinity of Curie points, are not detected. Furthermore, the existence of first-order transformations with latent heats much smaller than those occurring in the known allotropic transformations of iron and titanium is, we agree, still pending.

VEINS of asphalt fill and seal vertical fault fissures at the surface of a large domal structure near Bejucal, Havana Province (about 19 miles south of Havana), so this structure was chosen, by Barnabas Bryan, for the drilling of a well on the theory that oil had risen from below the Cretaceous and had entered the porous sands of the Upper Cretaceous, which outcrop in three places within a radius of 12 miles. The asphalt in these fault fissures, he contended, had sealed them and thereby prevented further dissipation of the oil. Furthermore, he found, in the asphalt, specimens of sand and lime that were indications of its upward migratory character. Ralph Arnold, who discovered the Upper Cretaceous sand saturated with oil in the outcrop near Mariel, in Pinar del Rio Province, has compared the Bejucal structure with the Santa Maria field in California. The surface rock of the structure is Oligocene limestone and shales, thin, bedded and well stratified. This formation has, heretofore, been assigned to the Eocene with a thickness of 3000 ft. and locally called the Nazareno formation. Paleontologic examination of well cuttings, however, has disclosed Oligocene fossils at a depth of 1142 ft. and Upper Cretaceous fossils at a depth of 1541 ft., leaving approximately 400 ft. of very parenthetical Eocene. Whether there is any Eocene in this structure has not been determined.
