This piece of Carpenter crucible steel has exhibited a tensile strength of 116,000 pounds per square inch, an elastic limit of 89,170 pounds, an elongation of 25 per cent., and a reduction in area of 42 per cent. The test-specimen had a length of 2 inches between fillets, and was an inch bar reduced to an area of 0.504 square inch. This unusual tensile strength was determined before the bar had been hardened so as to show the remarkably velvety fracture here exhibited; but a piece of the same, tested after hardening, is reported to have stood a stress of 214,000 pounds per square inch. Another test-piece is said to have shown 136,000 pounds tensile strength, 97,300 pounds elastic limit, 20 per cent. elongation in 2 inches, and 40 per cent. reduction of area. Mr. Carpenter claims that this steel, containing 2.27 per cent. chromium and 1.04 per cent. carbon, can be welded like iron, and has proved most desirable,for the highest class of die-steel.

The Institute published a collective index of- Volumes I to XXXV inclusive, which has been very extensively purchased and used by the members of the Institute. It enables one to look, up any subject in the first thirty-five volumes and is useful to those who have the Transactions, as well as to those who have not, because it tells what subjects have been treated and enables one to look these matters up in his own library and then afterward either to procure the individual papers from the Institute at the price of $1 each, or to procure Volumes, or to consult the Trans-actions at a nearby library, if such a one is available. It now seems desirable to publish another collective index, and the Editorial Department, upon the authority of the Board of Directors, has prepared an index of Volumes XXXVI to LV inclusive. This will be sold in the Institute's standard half morocco binding at a price of $5 and in paper covers at a price of $4. It wilt be ready in a few weeks. Those who already have the first index and purchase the second one, and those who purchase both, will have a complete index of the Transactions from Volumes I to LV inclusive. Oil has been produced in Persia and India for many years, but it was not until 1932 that Arabia entered the arena as a potential oil-producing area. In 1930 the Standard Oil Co. of California acquired a concession covering the rights of exploration and exploitation for oil in the Bahrein Islands and in June, 1932, the first commercial production was discovered by the bringing in of a well known as Jebel Dukhan No. 1 on the Island of Bahrein. Since then the Standard Oil Co. of California through its wholly owned subsidiary, The Bahrein Petroleum Co. Ltd., has been carrying on a systematic survey and development program of its concession in the Bahrein Islands. This group of islands, of which Bahrein is the largest, is in the southwestern portion of the Persian Gulf, approximately 25 miles from the mainland of Arabia. Although geographically a part of Arabia, the islands are not a part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Their government is essentially independent but certain special rights have been granted to Great Britain through a series of treaties. The Island of Bahrein is 32 miles long by 9 1/2 miles wide and covers an area of 215 square miles. Approximately three-fourths of the island is occupied by a relatively low, broad, elliptically shaped dissected hill, the central part of which is slightly depressed with inward-facing cliffs but culminating in the Jebel Dukhan (Hill of Smoke), which rises to an elevation of 443 ft. above sea level. The topography of the island is a good index of its geologic structure. Structurally the island is an elongated dome or quaquaversal fold composed of rocks of Eocene age. The major axis of the fold strikes N.5W. All of the topographic high portion of the island is a part of the structural uplift. The crest of the fold is broad and flat with the dips increasing on the flanks. How far tilted strata may continue beyond the line where the Eocene beds are covered by recent sands and detrital material is not known. Superimposed on the general structure are a few small irregularities in the form of minor folding and faulting. There is, however, no evidence of any major faults. Tests are described that show that back pressure on flowing wells is a waste rather than a conservation of natural forces. Stop-cocking, however, gives encouraging results. VARIOUS estimates have been made as to the percentage of oil left in a field after the wells have become so small that it is no longer practical to produce them. Engineers have given the matter much study and can substantiate their figures by data taken from fields from the Appalachians to California. The average oil sand has a porosity of about 20 per cent., which gives a capacity per acre-foot of approximately 1500 bbl. The sand thickness in Oklahoma pools averages 20 ft. With 20 per cent. porosity and a 20-ft. sand thickness, the capacity per acre is 30,000 bbl., yet these pools will seldom yield more than 5000 bbl. to the acre. These figures support the theory that at least 50 per cent. of the oil remains in a sand after all known methods to recover it have been used. Certainly we can never recover all the oil, unless in years to come oil becomes so rare and yet so necessary that the price will justify sinking shafts into the abandoned fields and regular mining methods of drifting and stoping. However, with improved methods of production and conservation of the natural agencies of expulsion, we should be able to increase recovery. It is with this in mind that this paper, relating to the effect of back pressure on wells, is presented. Except in the fields where production is caused by hydrostatic pressure, the chief agency for getting, oil out of the sand into the hole is the gas that occurs with the oil. After the pressure has declined, probably gravity also is a factor, but not an important one. With a given amount of oil in a sand and a given amount of gas occurring with the oil, the ratio of gas volume per barrel of oil is the key to the ultimate recovery from that sand. Our efforts should be along lines that will, lower this ratio and make the gas, the agency given us by nature, do its work better and yield more of the oil, of which it is a part.

Dispersion-strengthened aluminum products consist of an aluminum matrix containing finely distributed ceramic or intermetallic particles. Examples of the two types of product are SAP, in which the dispersed phase is aluminum oxide, and materials made from atomized aluminum alloy powder, in which the dispersed phase can be FeA1, particles.' A fundamental difference between the two types of product is that the elongation of aluminum/aluminum oxide products decreases with increasing temperature, whereas the elongation of aluminum- FeA13 products, like that of aluminum alloys, increases with increasing temperature. As regards the structural stability, aluminum/aluminum oxide products are stable to temperatures above 600° C as aluminum oxide does not react with aluminum, whereas prolonged heating at above 400°C of aluminum-FeA1, products leads to coarsening of the intermetallic phase and loss of strength.' On the basis of these results it is supposed that a dispersion-strengthened product combining strength, ductility, and stability at elevated temperatures may be obtained if the dispersed phase reacts with the matrix in such a way that the reaction does not proceed at any significant rate at the application temperature. Different ceramic or intermetallic compounds may be selected as the dispersed phase, and, as alloying of the matrix phase may also influence the reaction, many possibilities exist for each metal. In the present study, aluminum products containing different oxides have been examined. For a reaction to take place between the dispersed oxide and the aluminum the free energy of formation of the oxide (MeO) must be greater than that of aluminum oxide; the difference should, however, not be too great in order to limit the reaction rate. In the crucible-method of assaying ores for silver a certain amount of litharge is essential to supply sufficient lead to collect the precious metals. The object of this paper is to point out that the use of a large excess of' litharge in the assay of some ores will give results for silver that are uneven as well as low. So far as I know, however, an excess of litharge does not affect the results obtained in the crucible-assay of ores for gold. The main reasons for using, in the crucible-assay, much more litharge than is required to givc the necessary lead button are: 1, its action as a flux; 2, its action as a desulphur-izer; and 3, its action as an oxidizer, especially on metals like copper and nickel, whereby they are forced into the slag as oxides and thus prevented from passing into the lead button. Hence, by the use of much litharge in the crucible-assay more ore call often be taken than in the scorification-process, and a lead button obtained which call possibly be cupelled at once or after a single scorification. The method is specially advantageous with an ore carrying much copper or similar impurity and poor in silver, when the assayer does not wish to resort to a wet-analysis for the determination of the silver. It is well known that some ores give better results when assayed by the scorification-method, while others give better results by the crucible-method. For several years I have noticed that, when much litharge was used with certain sulphide and arsenical ores, the results were considerably lower than when the scarification-method was used. Presence of hot water brought on by volcanic action nearby has severely complicated mining in the Limon gold mine in Nicaragua. Routine pumping problems have been multiplied and ventilation is a major problem. Enclosing rock is so hot that 20 pct of all power generated at the mine is consumed by forced ventilation. But hot water underground, however disagreeable and troublesome, may be handled and surmounted like any other difficulty if the estimated profit margin permits. Empresa Minera de Nicaragua's Limon mine is a 400-ton gold-silver producer located in western Nicaragua about 60 miles northwest of the capital city, Managua, and some 45 miles from the Nicaragua-Honduras border. Limon is situated in a low- lying district with a nearby chain of active and semi-active Tertiary volcanoes.

C. S. Smith has described a method for measuring the relative values of different solid-solid and solid-liquid interfacial tensi0ns. When a polyphase alloy is held at an elevated temperature, individual particles of each phase adjust their shapes and minimize the interfacial energy. Wherever three interfaces meet, the dihedral angles are such that the three interfacial tensions, considered as forces, are in equilibrium. When the angles between three forces in equilibrium at a point are known, it is possible to determine any two in terms of the third. In this way ratios of interfacial tensions have been .obtained. The value of a given interfacial tension ratio was found to be independent of the alloy system from which it was determined. Smith also has employed the method when one of the phases is liquid. WHEN a single crystal is annealed following plastic deformation recrystallization usually occurs rather than polygonization. Consequently, re-crystallization has received the overwhelming amount of attention albeit the intrinsic mechanisms by which dislocations rearrange and annihilate one another are just as well revealed by crystal polygonization. It is the purpose of this note to demonstrate the usefulness of studying the polygonization process by means of an etch-pit technique in sodium chloride. Sodium chloride deforms easily (the slip system is of the [110], (110) type), readily cleaves on (100) planes, and can be chemically etched so as to reveal the intersection of dislocations with a free surface. 11.3-1. Basic Principles. Communications systems available for application to surface mining operations can be divided into basic categories. These are: 1. Wired systems requiring some type of metallic conductor 2. Nonwired systems, or those commonly referred to as space-radio systems. Under the heading of wired systems, telephones of the ringer type utilizing magnetos were used in the early pit operations. These are still being used in underground mining operations where calling is accomplished by ringing a code made up of short and long rings. While the standard Bell Telephone Systems have not been applied extensively in underground mining, they have been used in open pit operations but have the disadvantage of using multiple pair cables which must be installed and maintained as the mining operations proceed. They have the advantage however, that when a Bell System is installed in a surface mining operation, communication is available not only within the operation but to any point in the world through the facilities of the world-wide Bell Systems. A second type of communication available is the audio system or public address system requiring the use of a special audio cable made up of shielded pairs for the loudspeaker and microphone circuits. Audio systems have one outstanding advantage over most telephone systems in that, with a high-powered amplifier, a paging call can be heard over and above the high ambient noise conditions usually found at a surface mining operation. However, they have the disadvantage of requiring special cable which must be installed and maintained. Another type of wired communication system available for surface mining is that of carrier frequency equipment similar to that used in underground mining operations. In this system, transmission is accomplished by means of a frequency modulated carrier that travels over the underground trolley wire, the rail on which locomotives travel, and adjacent telephone wires.

IF you do not make the disc at the same time as the core and as part of it, it is necessary to make it by itself. This is done by spreading on a board or other flat surface a layer of clay as thick and wide as [88] the disc that you made at the feeding head of the first pattern of the gun. When it is dry, mark it exactly with compasses and then, cutting with a chisel or rasp, make it fit exactly into the empty space at the head. Likewise, make a hole just as wide as the thickness of the core exactly in the middle of this clay disc. When you have put the disc in its place in the mould and then pass the core through this hole, it passes exactly through the center of the mould in such a way that it meets the iron ring that you put at the foot of the mould for this purpose. As I said above, if' you do not make it as part of the core, it is necessary to proceed in the aforesaid way. During the year 1936, a new high record was established for Peruvian production, the total amounting to 17,594,689 bbl., which brought the cumulative production of the country up to 205 million barrels. The 1936 figure represents an increase of 530,288 bbl. over that of 1935. The property of the International Petroleum Co. contributed 369,577 bbl. of this increase and the Lobitos property 158,233. Exploration work in the country was continued. The Selden Breck Co. examined a strip of the National Reserve in eastern Peru from Tambo del Sur to the Rio Pachitea. This company was granted a concession for a term of four years embracing approximately 50,000 acres near the confluence of the Rio Pachitea and the Rio Ucayali. During the year, the Peruvian Government commenced drilling a well on one of the reserved zones at Zorritos. At the end of the year, this well had reached a depth of 1300 feet. La Rrea-Parinas Estate.—Production on the La Brea-Parinas Estate of the International Petroleum Company, Ltd., reached an all-time high in 1936 of 15,126,491 bbl., an increase of 369,577 bbl. over the 1935 record. The total production from 1890 to 1936 was 163,668,014 barrels.

A few wildcat tests were drilled and the well at Cane Creek, started in 1937, was in active operation, but failed to reach its objective by the close of the year. The Clay Basin field in Daggett County, northeastern Utah, was extended about a mile east by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. with the completion early in June of No. 3-D Murphy, NW. NW. SW. of sec. 23-3N-24 E. This well had an initial production of 16,000,000 Cu. ft. of gas a day under 2160 Ib. pressure, from Dakota sand at 5918 to 5925 ft. after plugging back from a total depth of 6035 feet. The Clay Basin field, in the few years it has been in operation, has developed into a gas field of major importance. Approximately 1300 acres has now been proved by development. Six wells are on production, five of which were completed in Dakota sand and the sixth in a sand in the Frontier formation. The field was connected to the Salt Lake line

Aspects of hardware selection that are somewhat specific to the coal industry are discussed, and a table of potential areas of application is presented. The dilemma of internal software development is presented and a software development program based on a users group approach is outlined and discussed in detail.

Single-crystal thin films of molybdenum have been grown. by the pyrolytic decomposition of molybdenum hexafluoride in a hydrogen ambient on various insulating substrates at temperatures front 650° to 900° C. Single-crystal discs of various orientations of magnesium aluminate spinel, a aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, and the natural facets of beryllium oxide were all observed to exert epitaxial control on the depositing film. Determinations of the crystallographic relationships existing between film and substrates have been made, using X-ray diffraction three-circle goniometry and Laue back-reflection techniques. Using these data, crystallographic overlays have been constructed which suggest a possible interfacial geometry on the basis of a match between metal deposit atoms and metal ion sites in the substrate. A continuing program has been in effect in the Auto-netics Laboratories over the past several years aimed at the development of electronic materials in new and useful forms using chemical vapor deposition techniques. During the course of these investigations, the epitaxy of silicon1"5 and tungstenep7 on single-crystal metal oxide insulators was studied extensively. The deposition of molybdenum is a logical extension of the tungsten work since the crystal structure is identical and the lattice dimensions differ by less than 1 pct. The pyrolytic decomposition of molybdenum hexafluoride in hydrogen was used to grow molybdenum films on the oxide substrates AlzOs, MgA1~04, MgO, and Be0 at from 650" to 900°C, depending on the substrate material. Under the experimental conditions to be described, monocrystalline films of controlled orientation were obtained. The materials investigated and their crystal structure are listed in Table I. EXPERIMENTAL The molybdenum depositions were effected by the hydrogen reduction of molybdenum hexafluoride (MoFe) in a flowing system of hydrogen at atmospheric pressure. The schematic of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The hydrogen, purified by passage through a heated palladium thimble, was mixed with the vapor of the liquid MoFe maintained in a steel bottle at room temperature (25°C). ONE of the little-known characteristics of cast' iron, which neverthe-less has an important bearing on results where accuracy in machining-is essential, is the ability of this material to ease up internal strains when. .allowed to remain quiescent for a more or less extended period of time. At seems as if the molecules in such a casting, by virtue of their "mobility,? can adjust their relative positions to an extent sufficient to overcome some of the existing stresses. The following instance will perhaps give a fair idea of the condition a casting may he in when just shaken out of the sand. A very large sheave-wheel, after shaking out, was taken' outdoors to be, cleaned and made ready for turning up. It was leaned against the side of the building, but before much could be done an arm tore apart with a loud report. Investigation showed that the sun had been shining on the upper rim, this adding a slight strain to those already existing within the arm and thus overbalancing the strength of the metal in tension. Had this sheave been kept under cover for a while, or at least until machined, the-strains., would have eased off sufficiently to allow the sun to look upon it without disaster. It will not be necessary to multiply examples. Every engineer knows the danger of water-hammer in pipe lines, particularly if the latter are of cast iron. Every mechanic knows, or should know, that it is not good to strike a fitting that is under steam pressure. It will be necessary to say a few words on the "internal- strains" in castings-the so-called "casting strains" we hear so much about. We all know that to get a casting reasonably true to the dimensions wanted requires a slightly larger pattern. The usual allowance for gray iron is 1/8 in. to the foot (1 cm. per meter) and ¼ in. to the foot (2 cm. per meter) for white iron (all dimensions). This reduction in length, breadth and thickness in a casting is erroneously called "shrinkage." It should be called "contraction," as for practical purposes. it is simply the difference .in dimensions of the casting red-hot and cold.

The rate of acid leaching of malachite from a sandstone ore was shown to be controlled by the diffusion of H+ ions through the host rock. The kinetics of the reaction can be expressed by a shrinking core model. Equations for calculating effective diffusivities from an "infinite" slab and a cylindrical core were derived. The effective diffusivity, of H+ ions in a sandstone ore was measured.

Computers and computer applications in geophysics are fairly recent innovations. The area of data handling is one that has found many immediate applications. Initially, the use of computers involved in almost all cases, a batch-input arrangement requiring a trip to the local computer center, a wait and another trip. Even though the computer worked at incredible speeds, the time-delays, in case an error in the input data developed, often could be several days. Use of computers in mining exploration by medium-sized or small-sized companies and contractors has been almost non-existent beyond simple data reduction work. The principle J. R. Sturgul, SME member, and J. C. Wynn, both affiliated with the Dept. of Geosciences, University of Arizona, Tucson, presented this paper at the Eleventh International Symposium on Computer Applications in the Minerals Industry, reasons appear to be the time factor and the inconvenience of the frequent trips involved. With the advent of time sharing systems, whereby a company need only have access to a terminal, the main objections can be overcome. An Apparent Solution An apparent solution to the time and distance inconveniences which would permit more extensive use of computers in geophysical exploration, is to buy or lease/purchase a medium-sized computer and install it in or near one's office. This is a formidable proposition in terms of cost and programming time on both respects, but several mining companies of larger size have already gone this route. In most cases, the computers have been expensive devices with a limited memory or core size. For routine data handling this memory size is not restrictive; however, for many geophysical applications such as three-dimensional modeling this can be critical.

A CONSIDERABLE amount of information is available on the equilibrium distribution of manganese between slag and metal under oxidizing conditions. These data have increased our knowledge of the manganese reactions in the open hearth, ladle, and ingot mold. In contrast, there is a paucity of data on the slag-metal distribution of manganese under reducing conditions. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the equilibrium distribution of manganese between blast-furnace type slags and iron saturated with carbon. Experimental Method Furnace: The induction furnace used for the experiments is shown in Fig. 1. A 1 in. pipe, attached to the transite cover, was fitted with a window through which the charge could be observed. Material could be introduced into the furnace through a tee and plug without removing the cover. A graph-it cylinder (3 in. ID and 10'/2 in. long), centered within the induction coil, was used as a heating element. During a test, a zircon plug kept the top of the furnace from becoming too hot from heat radiation. At the bottom, a graphite block on the vertical center line of the furnace and extending 1 1/2 in. into the coil, was used as a support for the graphite crucibles containing the melt. The graphite crucibles, machined from regular carbon electrode stock, had a 2% in. OD with 3/16 in. walls and were 5% in. long. The fumes present in the furnace during the early part of a run made optical readings uncertain. A noble metal thermocouple was, therefore, adopted to measure the temperatures. The arrangement used, shown in Fig. 1, allowed the silmanite protection tube to be replaced with a minimum effort. The thermocouple was calibrated against a standard Pt-Pt-Rh thermocouple in a fused quartz protection tube. The latter was inserted in the molten iron by removing the glass window on the cover. The lower couple was found to be very sensitive to temperature changes. To insure accurate temperature readings, the graphite crucibles were made to fit tightly against the silmanite protection tube. Further, to avoid contamination of the thermocouple by carbon, the silmanite tube was changed and the calibration procedure was repeated at frequent intervals. By using this temperature measuring technique, the furnace was easily held within *1O°C of the desired temperature.
