Physical degradation of calcined bauxite is related to the presence of goethite in the raw bauxite and to the development of secondary gibbsite. Goethite in the bauxite matrix will shrink and decrepitate during calcining, leaving a friable matrix and allowing disaggregation of the calcined bauxite during transport and handling. A matrix consisting of cryptocrystalline gibbsite alone or mixed with hematite will not shrink during calcination, yielding a calcine with high abrasion resistance. The development of secondary gibbsite between coarse gibbsite crystals also reduces degradation of the calcine by reducing the amount of disruption between grains resulting from differential thermal expansion.

In gassy coal mines, abandoned worked-out areas are natural reservoirs that may contain air- methane mixtures. The quantity of such mixtures is continuously increasing or decreasing as atmospheric pressure falls or rises. This is in accordance with Boyle's Gas Law, which states that the volume of a perfect gas varies inversely with the absolute pressure. In large, open gob areas without a bleeder ventilation system, atmospheric pressure is a static force acting in all directions. Changes in atmospheric pressure may occur rapidly or slowly, but any change will result in a change in the quantity of gob air-methane mixtures.

IN a recent paper Kuczynski' studied the rate at which the crack between a metallic plane and a spherical particle of the same material is filled up gradually when heated at temperatures near the melting point. If x is the radius of contact between plane and sphere (fig. I), Kuczynski shows experimentally that x5 = At [1] where t is the time. Assuming that the mechanism of transport of matter is the volume diffusion of vacant lattice sites, he is also able to prove Eq 1 theoretically. The constant A contains as a factor the self-diffusion coefficient of the metal and he shows that the values for this coefficient deduced from his experiments yield the same activation energy as that calculated by other methods, which is a confirmation of this point of view. Kuczynski has also considered theoretically the law of growth of x which would be expected if surface diffusion were the important mechanism. He suggests that x should then obey a law of the form x7 = At, and claims to be able to decide the mechanism involved from the observed law of growth., The purpose of this note is to prove this incorrect. On the contrary, when the mechanism is surface diffusion Eq 1 is also obeyed, but with a different constant A. Following Kuczynski, we suppose the bottom of the crack (surface A A) to have an average radius of curvature p. As a result of this curvature the concentration of adsorbed atoms in this surface, n(p) per cm2, will be smaller, and the concentration of vacant lattice sites in the neighborhood, N(p) per cm3, will be larger than the corresponding concentrations, n(w) and N(w), for a flat surface. A certain amount of interest has been indicated recently in the resistance to oxidation at high temperatures of iron-aluminum alloys (rich in iron). Hautmanl published a paper in which some interesting results are given. According to his paper, only alloys containing at least 8 per cent aluminum indicate a marked improvement in their resistance to oxidation. At about this aluminum content, however, alloys become brittle, which considerably reduces their commercial value. About two years ago the author performed a series of experiments, the results of which are presented here. A series of iron-aluminum-carbon alloys was prepared by melting electrolytic iron, aluminum and high-carbon iron alloy in an induction vacuum furnace.2 The list of these alloys is given in Table I. The photograph, Fig. 1, shows the apparatus a little less than half size, consisting of a filtering-flask fitted with rubber stopper through which passes a bent glass tube, and an extraction-thimble fitted with rubber stopper through which passes a glass tube of 0.25-inch bore. Both tubes are connected by a short piece of rubber tubing. A section of a thimble is shown in the photograph ; the tube extends to within & in. of the tapered end. The object of using the thimble is to remove the acid from the beaker after all the copper has been precipitated. Time is saved, the copper is not exposed to the acid alone, and there are none of the losses attending ordinary filtration. I have accomplished these results by means of a piece of perforated platinum fastened in the end of a (0.25-in. bore glass tube and a filter-mat of asbestos, but after my supply of proper length fiber became exhausted I could not replenish it even after purchasing 14 lots from four different dealers. The above apparatus may be used to remove at least seven-eighths of a supernatant liquid from a settled precipitate without disturbing the latter. The application of the thimble is best shown by partly outlining the assay for copper, as follows: Dilute the acid solution of copper and other sulphates to 150 cc. in a 200-cc. Jena beaker, place on a hot plate, add 2 drops of concentrated HCl, then place a strip of aluminum in the beaker (this may be bent or straight, as desired). Connect the apparatus, as shown in Pig. 1, with a filter-pump having a strong suction. When the copper is precipitated, remove the beaker from the hot plate and insert the extraction-thimble alongside the strip of aluminum. The acid solution will be drawn through the porous tube. The scarcity of values of tensile strength of rocks has been explained by the lack of successful testing procedures. In the case of mine rock a description is given' of the difficulties encountered in testing a cylindrical specimen, such as a core, by conventional methods. Over a period of years the following method has given definite and reproducible results with the weakest as well as with the strongest rocks. It does not completely supersede the use of cores with special fixtures but is a supplement in all cases where cores cannot be obtained, as from soft rocks, or in cases where it is less expensive to prepare test specimens by cutting them out of the rock instead of drilling cores.

As the heart of a copper-producing complex, a smelter converts raw copper concentrates or leach-plant precipitates, or both, into blister copper. A typical smelter feed also contains matte chips, flue dust, flux, and lime. All these materials vary widely in their characteristics, ranging from sub-micron to lumps, from slurry to dust, from abrasive to corrosive, and free-flowing to adhesive. Handling all these materials becomes even more problematic since most of the world's open-pit copper mines are located in a semi-arid zone where rainfall is minimal.

The great advance of the last twenty years in the specialization, delicacy and efficiency of ore-concentrating apparatus calls for a finer system of testing both the qualities of ores and the operations of machines in this department. In amalgamation, lixiviation and smelting, the daily employment of physical and chemical tests has been recognized as necessary, and the cost of the necessary laboratories and employees is cheerfully paid. But while much progress has been made in concentration (due, in a large degree, to the study of the subject in our technical schools), it is still too common in actual practice to follow the loose old method of roughly estimating, once for all, that a given ore " concentrates x tons into one," and resting on this assumption so long as that ore continues to be treated, while assays of the tailings from concentration are made from time to time, without exact determination of their quantity. The first step toward accuracy of control must be a more frequent and precise measurement of the quantity of concentrates from a given operation. This should be expressed in pounds per unit of one ton; and the variations shown in frequent determinations will furnish a constant check upon the character of the ore and the performance of the apparatus. But this is only a part of what should be constantly and systematically done to insure the best work upon a material which must vary continually, even though it come from one mine only. If, in any mill, appropriate laboratory-tests were made at least once a week, the labor and expense involved would be amply repaid by increased knowledge and control of the current operations. HE orientations of 137 crystals of copper pro-T duced by secondary recrystallization in a cube texture matrix have recently been obtained. Although the crystals were not prepared for the purpose of determining a secondary recrystallization texture, the orientations obtained proved to be rather interesting, as they confirmed, in part, published results and also disclosed additional preferred orientations in the texture. The investigation of Dahl and Pawlek,&apos; Bowles and Boas,&apos; and Kronberg and Wilson3 showed respectively that the orientations of secondary grains growing in a cube texture matrix were related to those of the primary grains by a rotation of approximately 30" about [001], the rolling direction, by 30" about a <111> direction, and by either 22" or 38" about a <111> direction. Kronberg and Wilson also obtained a component of the texture similar to that of Dahl and Pawlek except the angle of rotation about [001] was 19". When the cube texture matrix was deformed a small amount, Kronberg and Wilson also obtained large grains on subsequent annealing corresponding to a rotation of 15" about the normal to the sheet, but these grains should not be classified as secondary recrystallization grains since they were produced subsequent to mechanical straining. The particular texture obtained, of course, depends on the composition of the copper and the processing schedule employed, since these factors markedly affect the primary recrystallization texture and the sharpness of any cube texture produced. In the present investigation, pieces of OFHC copper in the form of M in. round bars were cold forged to a thickness of about 0.40 in., annealed 1 hr at 350°C in an atmosphere of hydrogen, and cold rolled crosswise to a thickness of 0.200 in. These pieces were given a penultimate anneal of 1 hr at 350°C in hydrogen and a 90 pct cold-rolling reduction lengthwise to a thickness of 0.020 in. Indentations generally were put in one end of the as-cold-rolled strips to promote earlier formation of secondary grains.

At the Kidd Creek mine operated by Ecstall Mining, Ltd. near Timmins, Ontario, Honeywell has installed a sophisticated new quick- thinking computer system that keeps tabs on conditions along three separate processing streams at once and relays continuous 60-second data to the mill operator. Believed to be the first of its kind, the system picks up data from two independent x-ray spectrometers simultaneously. A digital computer from Honeywell&apos;s Computer Control Division receives and interprets real-time information gathered by online x-ray analyzers, and the system then advises control room operators of the relative amount of each of five elements at five points in each of the three process streams. The system is reported to provide a quantitative analysis of the five elements at a given point in the process within one minute-which is about 120 times as fast as a chemical laboratory assay could be performed. With this instant data at his command, the mill operator can make timely process adjustments to correct any deviation from optimum flotation results, thus salvaging valuable minerals that would inevitably be lost with slower detection methods. The minerals recovered at Kidd creek are copper, lead, iron, silver and zinc.

INTRODUCTION In this paper we derive an expression to predict the onset of growth of a crack in a quasibrittle material. We employ an energy criterion, which was first proposed by Griffith (1920), and is essentially equivalent to the first two laws of thermodynamics. The criterion is applied to the elastic-plastic crack of Olesiak and Wnuk (1968), which is a three-dimensional generalization of the Dugdale (1960) crack. Our expression for the onset of growth differs in several respects from a criterion based on a crack in a brittle material (i.e., using linear elastic fracture mechanics) . Furthermore, the new features are in qualitative agreement with the experimental data. Among these new features are 1) the dependence of the apparent surface energy, or critical strain energy release rate on crack size (the shape of the R-curve); 2) the effect of in-plane stresses (i.e., the stresses that do not lead to any traction on the crack faces) on crack growth; and 3) a brittle-ductile transition. The energy criterion, as a necessary condition for crack growth, rests on a firm theoretical basis. However, its role as a sufficient condition is less secure. Several alternate criteria have been proposed as necessary and sufficient conditions for the onset of crack growth. We will contrast several of these, including critical strain (Olesiak and Wnuk, 1968; Goodier and Field, 1963) and crack opening displacement ("COD", Burdekin and Stone, 1966) with the energy criterion. We will show that these alternate approaches are inconsistent with the energy criterion, in the sense of being necessary conditions, and so should be rejected as criteria for growth--at least for the elastic-plastic crack.

IN the anthracite coal regions of Pennsylvania the custom has been to sight either at an open light (generally a mine-lamp), or at the string of a plumb-bob. If the station was intended to he a permanent one, a spud, as it is called, that is, a nail resembling a horseshoe nail with a hole in the head, is driven into the timbers over the station, or, if there be no timber, a hole is drilled in the coal or rock roof, into which a wooden plug is driven, which serves to hold the spud. The first operation in making a survey is to lay out the stations, that is, to mark the place where the holes are to be drilled for the plugs or the points on the timbers where the spuds are to be driven in. This should be done before any instrumental work is begun, as much labor can generally be spared, and the use of very short sights can often be avoided, by carefully laying out the stations beforehand. When the stations were laid out, a plumb-bob was hung from the innermost spud, which I will call No. 1, the instrument was put in position at No. 2, by plumbing down and putting a centre-pin under the spud, and then setting up over the centre-pin, and another plumb-bob was suspended from No. 3. If great accuracy was not required, a mine-lamp was set up under the plumbbobs, at No. 1 and No. 3, and the engineer sighted at them. If great accuracy was required, a lamp or some white sbface was held by an assistant behind the strings of the plumb-bobs. IT is now well established that quenched and tempered titanium alloys have much better ductility when the quenching is from a two phase a-B structure, rather than from an all B structure. The corresponding microstructural differences, however, have not been shown in previous publications. Accordingly, specimens were cut from a % in. rod of commercial RC-130A, containing 7.9 pct Mn and 0.12 pct C, which had been previously hot rolled, heated 1 hr at 1100°F, and air cooled. (The same heat has been studied by others." 7 Samples about 1/4 in. cube were heated in helium 1/2 hr at 1450&apos; or 1700°F, quenched in brine, tempered in helium 1 hr at various temperatures up to 1250°F, and quenched in brine. They were then sectioned and metallo-graphically examined, using an etchant of HF-HNO, in glycerine. As quenched from 1700°F, the microstructure observed was clear /3. (Probably also present was U, as the hardness was 400 Vhn, but w is not yet reliably revealed by any metallographic technique.) The Klerksdorp gold mining district, South Africa, experiences a relatively high level of seismicity with many seismic events of magnitude greater than 4. These large events appear to have foci close to fault planes, most of which displace the strata by several hundred metres over a wide area. To help understand the mechanism of these large mining- associated seismic events, in situ stress measurements were made at 4 sites using "CSIR doorstopper" strain relief techniques. The sites were chosen close to, or some distance from fault planes and other structures. The results show that at all 4 sites a relatively large horizontal stress is oriented approximately north- west. The magnitude of this stress ranges from 0,78-1,O of the vertical stress. A marked horizontal stress anisotropy, varying from 13-30 MPa is also present. The dominant structural features are large, north-east striking normal faults which extend across the entire length of the goldfield. Displacements across these faults vary from a few centimetres to several hundred metres. Bedding plane faults across which large displacements may occur are also common as are north and north-west striking dykes. The majority of the faults strike at approximately 90º to the maximum horizontal stress and at all sites a large compressive stress plunges in the direction of dip of the strata and fault planes. Thus a significant shear stress may act across suitably oriented planes causing them to be in a state of potentially unstable equilibrium. Austria produced approximately 800 cisterns of 10,000 kg. each (56,000 bbls.) of crude oil of a 0.9428 sp. gr. during 1935. Of this Gosting II well near Zistersdorf, owned by the Erdolproduktions-Gesellschaft m.b.H., produced 86 per cent of the total, averaging a little over 1.8 cisterns, or about 125 bbl., per day. Gosting IVa of the same company was put in production early in December and produced a total of about 70 cisterns (4900 bbl.). Gosting IV was a failure, but a directional hole drilled from the same derrick produced Gosting IVa. Gosting I, a well owned jointly by the company above mentioned and the Raky-Danubia, was deepened late in the year and made about 2800 bbl. of oil at the rate of 70 bbl. per day. Completions during the year were as follows: In the Gosting pool, Gosting IV and IVa, drilled with rotary tools, the latter producing from Sarmat at a depth of 934 meters (3065 ft.); Kronberg I, of European Gas & Electric Co. with cable tools in Flysch at a depth of 566 m. as a dry hole; in the Oberlaa gas pool, one cable-tool well of the same company at a depth of 266 m. as a dry hole and one Fauck-Haiek system well of the Vacuum Oil Co. at a depth of 483 m. as a dry hole; one rotary hole of the European Gas & Electric Co. at Enzersdorf a/d. Fischa plugged and abandoned in Sarmat after a blow out and gas eruption at a depth of 699.5 meters. The status of drilling wells at close of the year is as follows: In the Gosting pool, Erdol Bohr- und Verwertungs G.m.b.H., north of the producing area, was drilling with rotary at 990 m., Raky-Danubia is rigged up to deepen the old Windisch-Baumgarten hole, Rohoel-Gewin-nungs A.G. (Vacuum-Shell combination) rigging up rotary south of the production, and Steinberg-Naphta G.m.b.H. (Musil) was deepened with light rotary to 830 m.; at Enzersdorf a/d. Fischa, the European Gas & Electric Co. E-2 rotary-drilled hole stood at 1533 m. in Miocene waiting
