A PREVIOUS paper1 described experiments on the interaction of dithiophosphate with galena and suggested that the process had characteristics of both chemisorption and surface chemical reaction. In order to add to this knowledge, a study has been made of the competition of a second ion with the dithiophosphate for a galena surface. Use again was made of radiotracer methods. Since radiophosphate was readily available, it was chosen as the competing ion. It is a feature of the tracer method that, in spite of similarity in the chemical behavior of the ions, the measurement of one ion in the presence of another can be made as simply as if only one ion species were present. In order to study the competition effectively, it naturally was necessary to examine the interaction of phosphate with galena alone as well as in the presence of dithiophosphate; consequently, this report consists of two parts. The first is devoted to a study of the rates, the isotherms, the desorption, and the exchange in the phosphate-galena system in the same manner as was done for the dithio-phosphate-galena system. The second portion is concerned with the studies on the competition. Flotation experiments on the three-component sys- tem are also outlined and the relationships involved are discussed briefly. The experimental method was that of the previous paper. The preparation of the galena, the radioactive and the nonradioactive dithiophosphate, and the procedures for radioactive counting, for sorp-tion, and for flotation measurements were identical to those previously employed. The radiophosphate* was used in the form of disodium phosphate solution. In the competition experiments the effect of the phosphate ion in depressing dithiophosphate uptake was followed by holding the initial concentration of nonradioactive phosphate constant while varying the initial concentration of the radioactive dithiophosphate. Counterfashion, the depression of phosphate by dithiophosphate was obtained by keeping the initial nonradioactive dithiophosphate ion concentration constant and altering the initial concentration of the radioactive phosphate ion. Safety First is a popular motto—most mining companies have adopted it. It is probable, however, that in the majority of cases it is only a motto and gets no further than the office stationery or the bulletin board at the mine's entrance. In but few industries is there employed a greater diversity of machinery and mechanical devices than in coal mining. The list ranges all the tray from mechanical stokers to wood-working machinery and undercutters. Many of these devices, particularly those employed in wood working, are extremely dangerous. In 1913,23 per cent. of all fatalities occurring in coal mining in the U. S. were caused by machinery of some sort or other. Although the forms of accidents occurring with mining machinery are legion, they generally arise from one or more of five causes: (a) Falls from ladders, platforms, etc.; (b) coming in contact with moving machines or parts thereof; (c) electric shocks; (d) failure of some machine part; (e) mismanipulation of valves, levers, switches or other hand-operated controlling devices. The steps which may be taken to prevent accidents from the above causes are almost as numerous as the accidents themselves. There is, and can be, no panacea for all mishaps, nor for any one class of accidents. There is no mathematical or other formula that will bring immunity under any set of conditions. Common sense is the only guide. The remedy for the first-named class of accidents is simple and generally effective—namely, make the staging, ladder, platform, or other support, abundantly strong to carry any possible weight that it may be called upon to bear; provide ample railings on platforms or runways, and non-slipping feet on movable ladders. Coming in contact with moving machine parts is one of the greatest dangers met with in the operation and maintenance of mining machinery. Unfortunately, machine manufacturers have not as a class adopted the idea of thoroughly protecting and incasing the dangerous parts of their product. No one has, or should have, a better or more thorough knowledge of what the dangerous parts or elements of a machine may be than its builder. On Tuesday evening, February 21st, a reception of visiting societies was held in the Windsor Hall. Hon. George Irvine, Q. C., President of the General Mining Association of the Province of Quebec, occupied the chair, and, after welcoming the guests of the occasion in the name of that Association, introduced Mayor Desjardins, who expressed a cordial greeting for the city of Montreal. After appropriate acknowledgements from the President and the Secretary of the Institute, President Birkinbine delivered his presidential address. The first regular session of the Institute was held on Wednesday morning, February 22d, in the Physics Building of McGill University, where all succeeding sessions were also held. THE history of the froth flotation of coal is relatively short. The flotation process was applied to fine-coal cleaning about the time of the end of World War I. Coal flotation finds more widespread use in Europe than in the United States and is used on a commercial scale in nearly all major coal-producing countries in the world. In Fig. 1 the general arrangement of a froth-flotation plant at a British colliery is shown. GENERAL FEATURES OF THE PROCESS Application The flotation process is applicable to the cleaning of the fine sizes, particularly minus 48-mesh coal, although it may be used on sizes as coarse as % in. Since most cleaning processes usually are not effective on sizes smaller than 48-mesh and certainly not effective on minus 100¬mesh, the froth-flotation process offers a solution to the problem of cleaning these sizes. This process consists of agitating the feed pulp with a small amount of reagents, usually 1.0 to 91/ lb. per ton of feed in the presence of water and air; the reagents help to form small bubbles that collect on the particles having a greater affinity for the bubble surface than for the water surface, in this case the fine coal, and the bubbles buoy these particles to the surface to form the froth or concentrate. Slate and shale particles remain wetted and suspended in the water to be drawn off as tailing. The frothers commonly used in coal flotation are cresylic acid, pine oil, and alcohols. More expensive frothers, used in ore flotation, work satisfactorily but do not compare with these cheaper reagents for over-all cost. Collectors used are low-grade petroleum fractions, such as cheap, partly refined fuel oil, or lubricating oil, sometimes mixed with small amounts of kerosene. This paper presents results of analysis of the effect of fracturing on initial flow rates and on ultimate recoveries from low capacity oil formations. This analysis shows that even in formations of permeability as low as 0.1 md, large fracture treatments can yield oil recoveries and production rates approaching those of high permeability formations. Field production information is shown which supports the analytical work. INTRODUCTION Often hydrocarbon bearing formations are discovered which, while they are known to contain large quantities of oil, will not produce at commercially attractive rates without special well stimulation. Attempts to solve this problem led to the development of such techniques as underreaming, shooting, acidizing, and recently hydraulic fracturing. These methods of stimulation have been highly successful in many fields. All of these treatments, however, affect only the pay section near the well bore and therefore owe their success to circumventing and overcoming local permeability reduction about the well bore. It has been the belief that in treating wells to stimulate production in which there is no permeability reduction near the well, the maximum possible production rate increase would be of the order of two or fourfold. Hence, it has been concluded that fracture treatment of uniformly low capacity (permeability times thickness) formations could meet with but limited success. It is the purpose of this paper to show that the use of fracture treatments much larger than usually used can yield commercially attractive producing rates and high recoveries even in formations of permeability less than 0.1 of a md. PROCEDURE In order to illustrate the effects of fracturing, an analytical study of some hypothetical systems was made in which one factor at a time was varied to show what is important in recovering oil from fractured wells. It was assumed that a horizontal fracture of relatively high fluid-carrying capacity extended from a well bore. The presence of such a fracture will cause a marked influence on the flow pattern and pressure distribution in the formations, with the net effect being to reduce tremendously the resistance to flow into the well bore. A diagram of the resulting flow pattern and pressure distribution is illustrated in Fig. 1. Immediately after production commences, the principal flow of fluid is vertically from the formation flanking the fracture, into the fracture, and then into the well. After sufficient oil and gas have been produced to lower the pressure in the formation adjacent the fracture, oil and gas will begin to flow in a radial manner into the fracture from the formations beyond the end of the fracture. In calculating the performance under such conditions. the material balance or conservation of matter equation and equations of flow were solved simultaneously by a stepwise method of calculation. New equipment for seabed sampling, presently at the prototype stage, operates on the principle of diamond core drilling with wire line core barrels and is designed to drill cores from the seabed at depths down to 200 m with a continuous recovery of cores from an attendant vessel. The machine operates on the seabed by remote control from a console on the vessel. Neither installation nor operation requires the use of divers. Principal Applications Principal areas of application for the drill which is dubbed Maricor include investigation drilling in the continental shelf, mapping geological conditions before large drilling platforms are installed and exploring proposed undersea tunnel routes.

The so-called Rocky Mountain region is here made to include Colorado, Idaho, Montana, northern New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, an area of great distances and relatively sparse population. Conditions of distance, transportation and markets have had their retarding influence on devolopment and production but the increase in facilities and markets in recent years has provided additional incentive for more thorough search for new productive areas and the more complete development of the known fields. The low prices of crude during the past year have offset, to a certain extent, the desire for increased production and much of the effort has been directed therefore to outlining new areas rather than to attempts to increase production from known fields and thereby add to the already sufficient supply above ground. During the year just closed the Rocky Mountain region has seen consistent efforts to outline new areas and these efforts have been reasonably successful. In this area a very large part of the land is government property, and by cooperation between the government, the private owner and the company it has been possible to carry on development in a scientific manner, providing for the maximum recovery of valuable products at least cost and at times when prices were best. Due to the fact that in the Rocky Mountain region costs of exploration and development are relatively high because of natural circumstances, it has been the policy of operators to drill test wells only on structures where they controlled a large proportion of the land. Even community lease programs have been effected in certain areas, thus obviating the necessity of offset drilling and the attendant uneconomical and even wasteful production. Oil production in the Rocky Mountain states has shown a slight increase during the year, the average daily production for November being 78,124 bbl. as against an average in January of 76,681 bbl. The total production during the first 11 months of the year, according to the U. S. Burcau of Mines, was as follows:

This paper deals in a general way with certain of the necessary requirements of refractories for the open-hearth furnace. The refractories in common use for the different parts are discussed both as to the service they are giving and their suitability to withstand existing chemical, thermal and physical requirements. The relation between the service and allowable cost of a refractory is discussed and suggestions are requested on these points. The purpose of this paper is not to report, to the Institute, the results so far obtained in the survey, by the Bureau of Mines, of the metallurgical requirements for open-hearth refractories, but to present an outline that we hope will serve as a basis for discussion. The systematic survey that the Bureau proposes to make has not been outlined, although considerable preliminary work has been done in the way of interviewing open-hearth superintendents in several of the larger steel plants from the Chicago district eastward. At the several conferences so many of the opinions were diametrically opposite, when considering the same point, that it was thought that such an opportunity as the Institute offers in the way of a clearing house for moot metallurgical topics should not be overlooked. For this reason, the paper has been prepared as a basis for a discussion which, it is believed, will be of value in outlining the program of the Bureau. D. A. LYON, Assistant Director. THE importance of securing suitable refractories for metallurgical operations is daily becoming more universally recognized; particularly in the manufacture of open-hearth steel, where the life and earning power of the furnace depends largely on the judgment and care exercised in the selection of the correct quality of refractory for each of the parts. Any innovation that would make available to the steel manufacturers refractories with longer life or better suited to their needs than those now employed, and at a cost that would permit of their use, would be of enormous value to the industry at large. THE technique of handling drilling muds varies somewhat, partly because of personal factors but mainly because of differences in forma-tion, the type of problems met with, and the general drilling conditions in different localities. The much greater depths to which bore holes are now carried have made necessary closer attention to and great modifications of all aspects of drilling-mud technique. Increased depth means smaller hole, smaller drill pipe, smaller clearances, higher pumping pressures, higher differen-tial pressures between shows and the mud column, less accurate control of the weight of the mud column, delayed receipt of formation data, and poorer samples. It means longer delays and greater hazards in rectifying mistakes or dealing with accidental occurrences. Equipment on a larger scale is necessary and more pains must be taken with layout. Lastly, the budget costs of raw materials have risen to high figures and economy of time and of direct monetary expenditure have come to mean much more than formerly. A mud laboratory is now part of the essential establishment of a modern oil field and to it current problems can be submitted for the most thorough investigation. The detailed chemical properties of all mate-rials purchased or quarried have to be investigated. Detailed data on the physical properties have to be ascertained and research on improve-ment of material and its most efficient use has to be carried out. In this paper we propose to discuss the main mud problems with which we have to deal in Iran, some of which are peculiar to our local conditions while others are of the general type common to all workers in this subject.

The rise of drain holes drilled from a well to improve productivity is becoming increasingly common. This paper presents data on the productivity increase that may he expected. The data were obtained by use of an electrolytic tank mode1 of a reservoir. Parameter varied in the study to show their effect on productivity include the length, number, and arrangement of drain holes, formation thickness, and damage near the well-hore. The most important results are that very large increases in productivity can be expected only ill damaged wells. The distance, to which drain holes penetrate is of primary importance. Additional length is more effective than increasing the number of drain holes. INTRODUCTI O N In planning the use of drain holes to improve productivity, it is important to he able to estimate the increase in production that can be obtained for a given expenditure. It is also important to know what combination of parameters related to the use of drain holes can he chosen to give the largest production increase. This paper presents data on the productivity increase that may be expected, as obtained by use of an electrolytic tank model of the reservoir. In this study, :! number of parameters were varied to show their effect on productivity. These included the length, number, and arrangement of the drain holes. The presence or absence of a damaged zone of low permeability around the well-bore and the thickness of the producing formation were also considered. The productivity increase that might be expected due to drain holes is presented as the ratio: productivity of a well after drain holes are drilled and completed to the productivity of the same well in an undamaged state without drain holes. The symbol Q/Qo is used to represent this productivity ratio. Thus, the comparison in each case is with a formation of uniform and undamaged permeability. Additional notation includes I;, for the radial extent of the damaged zone, which is assumed to be cylindrical and concentric with the wellbore. Thus the effect of an actual block is approximated by a discontinuous varia-tion in permeability. For purposes of this paper, the permeability within the damaged zone, denoted by kb, is assumed to be 1/25 that in the remainder of the formation, or k. A necessary assumption in making comparative tests using an electrolytic model is that reservoir flow behavior can be approximated by single-phase, steady-\tate flow according to Darey's Law. In addition, the formation must be assumed to be homogeneous with equal horizontal and vertical permeability. The well-hore diameter in this study is assumed to be 11¾ in. and the drainage radius of the well equal to 500 ft. The drain holes are considered to have been completed without damage. The distribution and properties of interseam and overburden rocks in coal mines is largely controlled by conditions at the time of their original deposition. Within the developed areas of the Bowen Basin, depositional environments range from fluvial through upper and lower detaic, to marginal marine and intertidal facies. Each environment has a characteristic association of lithologies with specific range of properties, and each lithology has a characteristic geometry. Fragmentation problems are associated with ancient sand channel systems, where the difficulties encountered depend on the dimension and shape of channels, their continuity, orientation to mining face and associated sediment bodies formed as levees or interdistributary muds. Stability problems in spoil, pit floor and highwalls are usually associated with mudstones which contain swelling clays derived from the original Permian volcanic source. This clay problem is aggravated by deep Tertiary weathering. Case studies are presented of detailed analyses and prediction of geomechanical properties on a mine site scale. These are used in investigating or forecasting fragmentation and stability hazards. The studies incorporate detailed field mapping, bore log data and computer data processing. They allow the development of detailed depositional models for specific interseam intervals within mines. As areas of depositional environment are identified they allow the construction of maps of similar mining conditions and the determination of the most suitable mining techniques.

Complying with air pollution regulations created the need to dispose of increased sulfuric acid production by the Morenci smelter. As a result, a two-module leaching plant was constructed to leach Morenci flotation tailings. The leaching plant was equipped to perform the following operations: leach feed pumping, agitated leaching, two-stage countercurrent decantation, neutralization of leached tailings, and copper precipitation. Ancillary facilities were provided for neutralizer and flocculant preparation as well as precipitant handling and recovery of precipitates. Plant control is automatic from a central control panel supervised on a shift schedule by one operator and two helpers. Construction of the first module was initiated in April 1973 and leaching of tailings commenced in November 1974. Construction of the second module began in January 1975 and was completed in November 1975.

In order to increase the efficiency of underground coal operations, it is necessary to understand not only the operating system in detail, but the interrelationships between system components and the operating environment. With such an understanding comes more exact application of simulation and other operations-research techniques to plan and operate mining systems. One aspect of the coal-winning system in need of better definition, namely, the performance of continuous miners, is dealt with in this paper. Detailed discussion of this research will be found in a report by the authors. Mining Rate The performance of continuous miners-that is, the rate at which miners can deliver coal from an underground face to the outby transportation system-is dependent upon the geometric and geological conditions of mining, the characteristics of the mining machinery, and the skill of the machine operators. In order to predict mining performance, it is necessary first to identify these factors, secondly to devise a data-collection technique, and lastly, to select a method of data analysis for drawing meaningful conclusions. Factors Affecting Mining Rate: The factors that affect the mining rate can be conveniently grouped in the following four categories: Geological Factors-The natural conditions such as seam thickness, hardness, and cleavage. Geometrical Factors-The height and width of the entries and the angle of drivage with respect to the main entries. Machine Factors-The mechanical characteristics and physical dimensions of the machine, condition of the machine, condition of the bits, and related items. Other Factors-Operator efficiency, size consist of cutter product, etc. A classification such as given here is not rigid; some of the factors can be included in more than one of the categories and some can be combined as ratios. Data Collection The empirical nature of this investigation required measurements of variables under operating conditions in underground coal mines. A majority of the variables measured were continuous over a specific range of values; for example, the "width ratio" varied in practice from 0.25 to 1.00. "Dummy" values were assigned to certain operational variables in order that the variables would have numerical expression, i.e.: [ ] Data Analysis The method of analysis was to test a large model containing potentially significant variables and then reduce the model to one containing only the essential significant variables. The procedure of "scanning" a large proposed model and subsequently condensing the model consisted of two cycles of the same series of computational procedures. Correlation analysis, factor analysis, and regression analysis were the three statistical procedures that were used to derive the rate-generating equation. Correlation and Regression Analysis: Multiple linear correlation coefficients between all of the variables were calculated using the Pearson product moment formula along with the statistical significance of the correlation

Boiler-Room Economy "Establishing and Maintaining Boiler-room Economy" is the title of a paper presented before the Ohio Society of Mechanical Electrical and Steam Engineers by Geo. H. Gibson, of which the following is an excerpt: Boiler-room economy depends less upon equipment than upon operation, i.e., it depends largely upon the condition in which the apparatus is maintained and how it is used. A given boiler may operate this week with an efficiency of 78 per cent., and next week with an efficiency of 65 per cent., while using the same fuel and developing the same rating. If there are variations ii; character of fuel and in load and other factors, the falling-off may be even greater, possibly to less than 60 per cent. The steam produced may cost twice as much per 1,000 lb. at one time as at another. Most steam plant managers know from their own experience that these statements are not exaggerated. It does not take much of a plant to run up a coal bill of $5,000 per year, many "spend $10,000 for coal, and fuel bills of $50,000, $100,000, or $200,000 per annum are not uncommon. As it call be shown in the majority of these plants that 10 per cent. of this amount may be saved, and in large numbers of them 25 per cent., while in some the expenditure can be cut in half, there is no disputing that we have here a subject worthy of attention. In the production of steam the greatest variable is the human factor. Before we can pass judgment, however, we must first have standards. This implies accurate quantitative knowledge of fuel consumption and steam production. We must measure the output and know how much the steam costs per thousand pounds, and how many pounds of steam are obtained from a pound of coal. We can then begin to analyze the problem, and find where and how methods and conditions can be improved, and how much. Many favor buying coal on a B. t. u. basis. This is advisable where the amount purchased warrants the considerable expense involved in systematically gathering samples that: are. truly representative and in having analyses made, of every carload. Coal analyses, combined with. an honest endeavor on the part of the miner to ship good coal, should insure the receipt of the heat units paid for. , It often happens, however, that the coal which is cheapest on a B.t.u. basis is not the cheapest or most suitable for producing steam, because of peculiarities of the plant in which it is to be burned, or conversely, the fuel which furnishes cheap B.t.u. may require special methods or equipment for its economic utilization.

UNTIL quite recently, Alsace was the only district in France where petroleum could be found in somewhat industrial quantities. The Pechelbronn fields produce, however, only about 80,000 tons a year, which represent approximately one-eighth of the domestic consumption. Much research work has been done in Alsace to find the prolongation of the Pechelbronn fields, but instead of oil the drillings revealed the existence of large deposits of potash. This can, be easily explained when one remembers that the Pechelbronn oil is of the Oligocene period, and, that in the Alsatian stratification the Oligocene lies immediately on the Keuper, i. e., on the strata that originate from a period during which the largest salt and potash deposits were constituted. Before the war, and mostly at the end of the last century, some wells were drilled in various districts of France where some analogies could be found with the Alsatian geology, the borings being mainly made in the Triassic and Tertiary beds. They led to negative results. After the war, the growing importance of oil urged the necessity of resuming the explorations. But it is our belief. that this was greatly facilitated by the enacting of new legislation, which is embodied in the Mine Act of May 16, 1922.

Meeting of June 4, 1915.-The President announced the appointment of the following Committee on National Reserve Corps of Engineers: Dr. Henry S. Drinker, Chairman; Arthur S. Dwight, and Warren A. Wilbur; also, the appointment of Arthur F. L. Bell as Chairman of the Committee on Petroleum and Gas, and of James F. hemp as Chairman of the Committee on Mining Geology. All of these appointments were approved. It was voted that the following minute be, placed on record and a copy sent, by order of the Board of Directors, to the family of John Birkinbine: "The Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers hereby records its sense of sorrow and loss in the death of John Birkinbine, a former President, and for many years an active member of the Institute, and contributor to its Transactions. "Mr. Birkinbine's eminence as an engineer, author and editor, intimately connected with the industrial progress of the United States, brought him into contact With the leaders of science and the captains of industry, among whom his genial and estimable personal character won for him many friends; and his departure in the prime of Strength and usefulness is mourned by a wide circle."

Many attempts have been made to develop a relation between the tensile properties and the deep-stamping qualities of metals commonly used in deep drawing. These operations are generally performed cold and the metal is always stressed beyond the elastic limit. However, the problem cannot be readily solved without a proper investigation of: (1) the relation between actual stress and actual strain in the plastic range and (2) the stresses that are set up in the metal during the process of deep stamping. Much work has been done in recent years to add to our knowledge on plastic deformation of metals and the shortcomings of the ordinary tensile test, particularly in the plastic range, have been sufficiently recognized. It has been widely acknowledged that the local contraction, which appears in a tensile test after the maximum load is reached, is not a general characteristic of the material but is peculiar to this form of testing. The plastic deformation of materials is explained by the slip of their crystals along certain planes and this rearrangement should be similar whether observed in a tensile, compression or torsion test, and if the results of any of these forms of testing show deviations, it must be due to other influences, as for example the local contraction in a tensile test. For this reason the tensile-test curve as obtained from the measurements taken on a tensile-test machine or registered by an autographic device has been supplemented by the so-called "actual stress-strain curve," which is constructed from the observed tensile-test data by eliminating the effect of local contraction and is in complete alignment with the stress-strain values obtained in a compresison or torsion test. The actual stress-strain curve shows the increase of actual unit stress in relation to unit elongation beyond the yield point and beyond the point of maximum load and indicates clearly the extent of strain-hardening which the ordinary tensile-test curve does not reveal. Sooner or later in the development of any natural resource it becomes highly desirable to know the quantity of this resource in the country as a whole, as well as of the part that is being developed, for the general course and conduct of the development work must be governed, to some extent, by the total supply available. An accurate estimate of the quantity of any natural resource is difficult to make; yet if one is diligent enough one can obtain a pretty accurate idea of the quantity of marketable timber, the acreage of tillable land, or the horsepower that may be developed from the streams, for these are things that may be measured. But any attempt to estimate the quantity of some mineral in the ground appears to enter the realm of imagination and it seems that the estimate can be nothing more than a blind guess. It may appear to be especially futile to attempt to determine the quantity of oil and gas that is available in the ground, for these minerals are so vagrant that even if the quantity now available should be known quite exactly, the quantity that will eventually be obtained may be much less, for certain losses in the extraction of both oil and gas are unavoidable, and just what these losses will be cannot be predicted. Though necessarily inaccurate, estimates of such mineral reserves are, however, of distinct value, for they summarize the existing knowledge of the deposits of the mineral and thus enable those who are interested in some industry that depends in one way or another on this mineral to formulate a rational commercial policy. Some time ago, when the price of gasoline suddenly rose in a rather spectacular manner, the writer was one of the U. S. The abnormal conductivity found in shaly reservoir rocks containing an electrolyte is shown to be a consequence of the electrical double layer in the solution adjacent to charged clay surfaces. This increased conductivity results from a higher concentration of ions in the double layer than in the solution in equilibrium with the double layer. It is shown that the magnitude of the increased conductivity of a shaly reservoir material is influenced by the concentration and type of ions in the equilibrium solution as well as by the colloidal nature of the rock. INTRODUCTION An important factor in the quantitative interpretation of the electric log is the resistivity factor of reservoir rock. The resistivity factor is defined as the resistivity of the rock when completely saturated with an electrolyte divided by the resistivity of the electrolyte itself.' In the normal case, the resistivity factor for a particular rock sample is independent of the resistivity of the electrolyte and reflects the pore geometry of the rock.' In 1949. Patnode and Wyllie' showed that in some cases the resistivity factor is not constant, but instead varies with the resistivity of the electrolytic solution. It was shown that clean sands behave normally—i.e., that the resistivity factor does not vary with resistivity of the electrolyte — but that sands con- taining shale and clay may exhibit abnormally low resistivity factors when the solution used to saturate them is of fairly high resistivity. At low resistivities of the electrolyte, the resistivity factor for a shaly sand appeared to approach a normal behavior. It is evident that the resistivity factor of a shaly sand is dependent upon factors other than pore geometry when the solution used to saturate it is of high resistivity. Patnode and Wyllie, and later de Witte,' assumed that the conductivity of a shaly sand saturated with an electrolyte could be represented as the sum of two quantities. One of these was assumed, in effect, to be the conductivity which would be expected if the sample were a clean sand. and the other was assumed to be a conductivity inherent in the sample itself. The latter was supposed to be constant for a given rock sample regardless of the solution used to saturate it. The source of this added conductivity was ascribed to "conductive solids." In actual practice: the effect of the abnormal behavior of shaly sands is of minor importance except when the resistivity of a formation such as a sand is high. Thus the effect is more important when the sand is saturated with a dilute brine than when it contains a more concentrated electrolyte. The effect is also more important when the sample contains oil or gas than when it contains only saline water. Recently it has been suggested that the porosity of a stratum may be estimated from the electric log by use of the resistivity of the invaded zone." This is the zone flushed with the filtrate from mud used in drilling the well. which is ordinarily very dilute brine. When the method is applied to shaly sands, the effect of abnormal conductivity becomes of importance.
