The use of the centrifuge for dewaxing lubricating oils grew out of the effort to secure better results than had been attained by the common "cold settling" process. This process was the only known method for dewaxing steam refined cylinder stock (600" F. fire test), the product known as "bright stock" being commonlyused for building up "pressed," i.e., dewaxed neutrals of, say, 200-sec. viscosity [to a higher value. The process consisted of mixing the cylinder stock with approximately one and one-half times its volume of naphtha, heating, to dissolve completely all the oil and wax and then slowly chilling to about 15" F. in large insulated tanks. This caused the wax to precipitate. It was allowed to settle out by gravity. The supernatant liquid was then drawn off and the naphtha distilled off, leaving a still residue of bright stock. The sediment from the settling, of a slushy nature, was withdrawn. After removing the naphtha by distillation the residue was petrolatum. At some point in the process, preferably after the dilution but before chilling, the mixture was decolored by percolation through fuller's earth. The finished bright stock produced by this process had a cold test of about 50" F. Efforts to improve this by chilling to a lower temperature resulted in a considerable reduction in yield, and increased uncertainty of settling. Even when chilling to 15" F. it was not uncommon to find that after a week's waiting a tank had not settled. It was then necessary to heat and rechill. This uncertainty was a serious problem; in one case a refinery superintendent had men riveters hold pneumatic hammers against the tank for hours, hoping thus to cause agglomeration and settling of the wax. Yields of bright stock above 70 per cent, were uncommon. SUMMARY In order to accommodate a new plant in a limestone quarry in the Mendip Hills, it became necessary to excavate a potentially unstable disused face of the quarry. A simple two-dimensional graphical method was used to analyse a failure, which occurred during a period of exceptionally heavy rain in 1968, and the results of this analysis were used in estimating the stability of the proposed excavation. The presence of water in vertical fissures and tension cracks was found to be a dominant factor in determining the stability of these faces. The results of this approximate analysis were used as a guide in deciding upon the final slope design and the purpose of presenting this example is to illustrate how the various factors involved in arriving at this design were weighed to arrive at a compromise between theoretical recommendations and practical considerations. INTRODUCTION The successful outcome of a geological and geochemical survey to prove adequate re- serves of high quality limestone, suitable for producing burnt lime, led to planning for the installation of the necessary plant at Amalgamated Roadstone Corporation's Batts Combe Quarry at Cheddar in Somerset. Topographic and property boundary limits added to restrictions which were likely to be imposed by any forthcoming planning consents and restricted the choice of plant location to one site. The particular site is, in fact, the main floor area of the original quarry which, like many hillside quarries, had been worked with just one face. Before a benching scheme had been introduced on higher ground, the original face had attained a height of 230 ft. and sloped at angles of 58º to 64º. Fig. I shows the present configuration of the disused quarry face and the present working area above. The floor area below the disused face accommodates the existing crushing, conveying, and screening plant. The new facilities for lime burning are to be in addition to the existing main line business of producing roadstone and concrete aggregates and, although a new aggregate production plant would be included in the new installation, no disturbance of current production was to be contemplated.

DuRing the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide. The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the overburden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and transported to the dump in quarry cars. Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semicircle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft. above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river. As quarrying progressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp., 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft. above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting bays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage. An 8-in. suction line, equipped with a strainer and a foot valve, takes the water from a concrete sump at the edge of the river. REFRACTORY clay, one of Pennsylvania's important nonmetallic mineral resources, occurs at several horizons in beds of Pennsylvanian age. The Mercer fireclay, of Pottsville age (Table 1), is the most important of these clays. A study of this fireclay has been conducted by the Pennsylvania Geologic Survey discontinuously over a period of seven years. The work has included field mapping of a rather large area, as well as petrographic, differen¬tial thermal, and X-ray studies of the fireclay. A comprehensive report on the project is now in preparation.

A NUMBER of detailed investigations of the physical changes accom-panying age-hardening have raised the question as to the possibility of some phenomenon preceding the actual process of precipitation. There is considerable evidence to indicate that in the first stages of the aging process there is a pronounced distortion of the crystal lattice. This is particularly marked in duralumin. It would be of considerable theo-retical interest to know the nature of this distortion as compared with that produced in other ways and to find out whether, in supersaturated alloys, it is a necessary antecedent to the formation of a second phase by precipitation. It was believed that a study of the age-hardening char-acteristics of a normally aged alloy compared with one that had been mechanically distorted might supply some useful information on these points. In addition, information would be obtained regarding the effect of a mechanical distortion on any subsequent stage in the aging process. Duralumin was chosen as the material for this investigation because the various aspects of its aging behavior can be shown in detail by suit-able variations of the aging temperature. Also, probably more work has been done on this class of alloys than on any other. In spite of the many published results, it was felt that the experiments would be significant only if all of the work were done on samples from the same source and if they were examined under identical experimental conditions.

Reading in the AIME annual reports that certain activities have been financed by the Rocky Mountain Club Fund, less senior members of the Institute may wonder. "What's the Rocky Mountain Club?" Less youthful members will not have to wonder. They will recall the Club as an intriguing, almost fantastic organization, largely of western mining men, that flared across the New York horizon, flamed brilliantly for a little more than two decades, then sputtered out of existence- glorious even in its last flash. It was the only product of its mold, a fabulous group of magnanimous men who unhesitatingly sacrificed a cherished dream for which they had raised millions of dollars so that the money, instead of creating a magnificent club house, could be used instead to save the lives of starving Belgian children in World War I.

SOME months ago, I had occasion to make an investigation that introduced the subject of blue powder that is produced as a byproduct in zinc dis-tillation. Although every zinc smelter is aware that more or less blue powder production is inevitable and there is a common practice as regards the treatment of it, the specific and quantitative data respecting the subject were more imperfect than would have been expected. I had reports from eight important works. Some of the data were especially determined for my investigation. Speaking generally, there is a good deal of uniformity in the figures, all of which show that the blue powder product, bears a large proportion to the ore originally charged into the retorts; that a large proportion of the retort capacity is devoted to the redistillation of blue powder; and that of the spelter product of a furnace about 30 per cent. is derived from blue powder, i.e., it is zinc that has been distilled twice. THE indicator cards shown herewith were taken by the writer in June, 1877, from the water-pressure blowing engine of the Longdale Iron Co., at Lucy Selina Furnace, Longdale, Virginia. A description of this engine with figures, and some indicator cards, was published by Washington Jones, Esq., Superintendent of the I. P. Morris Co.,* in the Journal of the Franklin Institute for May, 1877, to which those desiring a full account are referred, but for convenience the principal dimensions, etc., are given below. The machine consists of a pair of horizontal directacting blowing engines, connected at right angles to a common fly-wheel shaft. The blowing cylinders are 4 ft. diameter by 5 ft. stroke; the water cylinders were 18 in. diameter by 5 ft. stroke as built. Both water and blowing cylinders are double acting. The water valves are balanced piston valves, 18 in. diameter, moved directly by eccentrics on the fly-wheel- shaft. Great care was taken to have the areas of the ports and passages at least equal to the area of the working piston. INTRODUCTION TO SAMPLING THEORY Before specifically discussing mineral sampling and sampling procedures, let us briefly consider broader and more universal concepts of modem sampling theory. A sample is de- fined as a representative part or a single item from a larger whole, being drawn for purpose of inspection or shown as evidence of quality. In modem theory the sample is a part of a statistical population whose properties are studied to gain information about the whole. The theory of sampling is built around the concept that if enough representative units of a larger overall population are selected without bias, the average value of the units will approximate that of the total population. Modem theory attempts to answer the question of how many samples are enough, given certain limits and constraints, and seeks to apply methods of sample selection and of estimation that provide, at the lowest possible cost, estimates that are precise enough for the purposes at issue. In order to meet these objectives the designer of a sample survey must rely heavily upon statistical theory. Statistics has been defined as the collection, presentation, analysis, and interpretation of numerical data. Statistical methods are primarily concerned with making valid inferences about a population based upon samples taken from the population. For most statistical applications, the total sample is in terms of number of items, attributes, or things; whereas mineral samples are usually in terms of weight or volume of mineral particles. Certain steps are involved in a well designed sample survey without regard to the particular field of application. Because the desired characteristics of an unmined mineral deposit can- not be known other than by sampling, we will consider these principle steps in terms of a mineral sample survey: 1) Clear definition of the objectives of the survey. In the case of mineral sampling this step is so apparent as to be almost ridiculous. However, it is surprising how often the overall objective of a sampling program is overlooked when decisions are made on a day-today basis. 2) Definition of the population to be sampled. The word population is used to designate the aggregate from which the sample is chosen. A sampling program may be designed to determine the grade of a single stope within a mine, the grade of a particular zone within a complex ore body, or the total value and extent of a mineral deposit. There is a fruitful area of computer competence which has gone virtually unnoticed by the mining industry. This is in the solution of its numerous fluid-flow distribution problems, involving the circulation of air, water and other fluids in conduits through mines. Typical of these is the mine ventilation system, which circulates air through mine openings to the working faces. The networks of interconnected airways in large mines-often resembling a tortuous maze or labyrinth defying representation by schematic, let alone solution-must somehow be resolved and analyzed, if effective and safe control of the ventilation is to be maintained. These are admirably suited to programming for solution by high-speed electronic computer. Not only can direction of flow be determined but quantity and head loss as well. EARLIER EFFORTS AT NETWORK SOLUTION The only prior attempt to solve mine ventilation networks by digital computer methods was made by a Japanese investigator1 in 1958 whose work went unpublished. Unfortunately, he employed a method of network analysis little used in the United States and one which could accommodate a maximum of only 30 airways. While his analysis seems unnecessarily cumbersome and involved, it did suggest that a digital computer approach was feasible.

Preamble At the present time many bodies are engaged in -the formulation of standards. There is no uniformity in the rules for such procedure in the different organizations; in some cases the committees engaged in the work are not fully representative, and in. a considerable proportion of cases they do not consult all of the allied interests. The present custom results in a considerable duplication of work, and in some fields several "standards" are proposed for the same thing, differing from one another only slightly and often in unimportant details. It is very much more difficult to obtain agreement between the proposers of overlapping standards after they have been published than it would be to get the proposers to agree before they had committed themselves publicly. The American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society for Testing Materials have appointed a committee to consider the advisability of cooperating in engineering standardization. This committee recommends that these societies form a permanent organization by appointing a committee as proposed in the following constitution and rules of procedure to carry on this very important work.

It has been employed by a few mines for years and in the past decade it has been widely adopted, as its advantages have become better known. Because of the extensive commercial development in England and Canada of machines to operate on this principle, general acceptance has been largely in the British possessions and until recently has been chiefly in the field of conventional steel. In the past two years there has been a definite trend toward hot-milling of detachable bits in Canada, but only in the past year has any considerable attempt been made to build special machines for this type of work. Generally a machine designed for conventional steel has been used and special holders employed to manipulate the bit. As early as 1934 at least one operator in the United States had adapted hot-milling to conventional steel with a substantial saving in resharpening costs.1 Several other operators have taken it up but there has been no widespread adoption of the method in this country by users of conventional steel. This may be partly explained by the fact that until recently no American manufacturer produced this equipment and operators have been obliged to build their own hot-millers or import them. Several years ago a few machines were built in Seattle, Washington, and operated in some mines in the northwest, but, for reasons not generally known, the effort was abandoned. The Process Hot-milling performs the function of re-dressing the bit at a forging temperature of about 1650°F., by the removal of metal from the flutes with a milling cutter, followed by a similar cut from the bit gauge. Conventional bits are thus treated following the usual forging operation in a sharpener, and usually in the same heat.

THE preliminary study of electrochemical desul-furization performed by Ohtani and Gokcen1 left a number of points concerning the process to be investigated. Two of these were i) the determination of the effect of greater current and voltage on the desulfurizing Flower of acid slags (% CaO/% SiO2- 1) and ii) the possibility of the loss of silica in slag by the reactions 2C (in metal) + SiO2 (slag) = Si (in metal) + 2CO(g) and C + SiO2 (in slag) = SiO(g) + cO(g) proceeding to a point at which the composition of the slag was sufficiently altered toward the basic side so a1.s to noticeably affect the rate of de-sulfurization. The apparatus and the procedure used in the present investigation were the same as those used by Ohtani and Gokcen, except the control circuit was connected to 120 v dc instead of 24 v dc and thereby allowed greater freedom in choosing the values of both current and voltage. The graphite crucible containing the melt and serving as the cathode was 3-in. high, and was of 1 1/2-in. ID with a graphite bar of 3/8-in. diam and 8-in. length threaded into the bottom for electrical connection. GEOPHYSICS differs from geology and physics in many respects. In the first place, geophysics is a complex science embracing the fields of seismology, geomagnetism, geoelectricity, geodesy, meteorology, volcanology, physical oceanography, physical hydrology, tectonophysics and exploration geophysics. Geology is also a complex science and so extensive in its various fields that no one can master them all, and no part of geology deals in any sense with several of these fields of geophysics. In the second place, geophysics makes use of methods and instruments that are derived primarily from the science of physics. Geology, on the other hand, has methods of its own and it draws its borrowed techniques and its instrumental equipment not only from physics but also and perhaps primarily from chemistry and biology. The difference, therefore, between the geophysicist and the geologist lies partly in the phenomena that are observed, partly in the methods and instruments with which each carries on his exploration; but partly also, and perhaps principally, in the habitual attitude of mind and in the background of specialized training with which each approaches the problems presented by this planet of ours. The geologist as such, therefore, is no geophysicist. On the other hand, the physicist is not a geophysicist either. Isolation of each problem in a closed laboratory system under complete control is fundamental to the methods of the physicist. The geophysicist must apply physical instruments and physicomathematical reasoning to the study of physical quantities in their undisturbed natural environment. What, then, is a geophysicist? In the sense that he is a trained expert in all of the geophysical sciences, I do not believe that such a person ever existed. It would be beyond the possibilities of a single lifetime. I think there is confusion in our ideas and in our use of terms. We are not all thinking of the same thing when we say geophysics or geophysicist; yet we seem to talk as though we were. It is as absurd to say that the whole of geophysics belongs to geology because the field of a particular type of geophysicist-the exploration geophysicist -calls for some knowledge of geology as it would be to say that the whole of biology belongs to geology because a particular type of biologist-the paleontologistneeds some knowledge of geology. DEVELOPMENT OF A GEOPHYSICIST Since it is impossible to become an expert in all the fields of geophysics, and since students entering college seldom know the field they will choose as a career, what would we suggest as the best general preparation for work in geophysics, whether as a meteorologist, an oceanographer, a seismologist, a geodesist, a geomagneticist, a volcanologist, a tectonophysicist, a hydrologist, or an exploration geophysicist? We may distinguish five phases in the development of a geophysicist: (I) his mathematical and scientific studies in high school; (2) the general mathematical and scientific

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, has established a computer-implemented coalbed methane data base containing data representing over 2,000 coal samples from approximately 250 coalbeds located in 17 States and one Canadian Province. Space for approximately 130 sample characteristics is reserved for each sample record and is divided for access efficiency into three separate physical files. A software package was written to provide a user-friendly environment in which the three files can be manipulated simultaneously. These files can be used interactively in DATATRIEVE 11, a commercially available sorting, retrieval, and report-writing software package or in any FORTRAN-compatible system for statistical analysis. The data base has been established for coalbed methane research in response to the health and safety needs of the mining industry. Possible applications of the data base include mine planning related to the occurrence of gas, as well as delineating areas of resource recovery and utilization.
