The southern gold-fields offer some of the most complex and trying problems encountered in mining; and their successful solution often means the success or failure of the particular enterprise involved. In vein-mining, where the values are scattered over large areas, making it necessary to handle a large tonnage of very low average grade, the successful solution has been found in some instances by a combined hydraulicking and milling; water under pressure being used as the mining agent, and also for transporting the broken material to the mills, and effecting in its passage a partial concentration of the product by washing out the lighter and looser dirt of the ore-mass. The placer-deposits of the South, which were the original localities from which gold was mined, have been extensively worked, and to any one now undertaking their development offer many difficulties. The antiquity of the industry in this field, which was the cradle (in fact, literally the rocker), in which the California '49-er was born, gives assurance that all the deposits available to water and natural drainage have been more or less extensively worked already, so that, as a rule, any placer-deposits yet remaining undeveloped may be considered to offer some difficulty beyond the ability of the " old-timer " to overcome.

.Although oil Production in West Texas in 1939 reached the highest figure for any year since the inauguration of proration, drilling activity continued in the decline that had commerlced the previous year. Production totaled 79,469,341s bbl. of oil during 1939 as compared with 71,257,541s bbl. in 1938 and 75,743,000 in 1937. The number of wells completed in 1939 was 1850, compared with 2045 in 1938 and 2806 ill 1937. Several factors combined to cause the decrease in drilling activity, principally the contiriued increase in the length of time required to obtain a return of invcstment and the scarcity of important new discoveries during the past two years. Of the 1850 completions 1638 resulted in oil wells, 4 were gas wells, 168 were dry holes and 40 were abandoned locations; 1990 new locations were made during the year. The ratio of dry holes to producing wells completed was one dry hole to each 9.75 oil wells, compared with one dry hole to each 7.48 oil wells completed during 1938. This large decrease in dry holes was due to a marked decline in the number of wildcat wells drilled, there having been only 120 wildcat completions during 1939. In addition to the lessened exploration work, the deeline' in activity was largely accounted for by the slowing up of operations in the older pools of Ector, Howard and Winkler Counties. Ector County, which had led West Tcxas in 1938 with 622 new oil wells, furnished only 485 producers in 1939, but was still the leader for the West Texas district. The largest gain in activity was in Yoakum County, whew 350 oil wells were completed in the Denver-Wasson field against 152 during 1938. The vapor pressure of zinc in equilibrium with solid ß AgZn alloys has been measured by the dew-point method. The thermodynamic activities of silver, and the molar heats of formation have been calculated. Similar measurements have been made for the ternary alloys formed by adding gold to AgZn. An apparent particle size effect has been observed for AgZn filings. The vapor pressure of zinc over filings is 15 to 20 pct higher than over the solid alloys. STATISTICAL methods have been used to inter pret the thermodynamic activities of the components of a solid solution in terms of average equilibrium atomic configurations. In some cases, the atomic arrangements can be measured by X-ray methods, and the results are usually expressed in terms of short range order parameters. Only in the cases of Cu³Au and AgAu have there been sufficient X-ray and thermodynamic data to verify the assumed correlation between the X-ray and the thermodynamic measurements. In Cu³Au the agreement is good; negative deviations from Raoult's law are observed and the number of Cu-Au nearest neighbor pairs predicted on the basis of the thermodynamic treatments agrees quite well with the number of such pairs observed by the X-ray methods. The ß brass alloys present a different set of conditions. The ordering is so rapid in these alloys that the disordered state cannot be retained on quenching. In contrast, the disordered state in CuAu is easily retained on quenching. On heating, the ordered ß brass loses its long range order continuously as the critical temperature is approached; in Cuau the order decreases slightly on heating and then drops discontinuously to zero at the critical temperature. These differences indicate that the short range order configurations in ß brass systems may be of a different character than in Cudu systems. However, X-ray measurements of local order cannot be made in the Cu-Zn alloys because of the similarity in scattering factors. The alloy AgZn is isomorphous with CuZn, however, and recent experiments have indicated that there is a good possibility of observing short range order in this system. Another complication arises in the case of ß AgZn. The disordered body-centered cubic structure exists above 280°C. On quenching from above this temperature an ordered structure of the cesium-chloride type is formed. On slow cooling, however, a complex hexagonal structure, the 3 phase, is produced; and if an ordered quenched alloy is reheated the phase begins to form above 80°C. It is thus difficult to study local order by X-ray methods in single crystals of AgZn since the C phase formed on heating does not necessarily return to a single crystal of the original orientation. Since the last decade the iron ore processing industry has undergone drastic changes from supplying screened and natural ores to manufacturing tailored concentrates and pellets. Increased need for the beneficiation of lower grade iron ore deposits and the increased demand for higher grade concentrates necessitate finer grinding of iron ores before concentration. The normal filtration stations used in the past are experiencing difficulties in dewatering the finely ground concentrates to moisture levels acceptable for balling. In addition to finer grinding, applications of complex beneficiation techniques has decreased the filterability of the concentrates and create problems in filtration of iron ore concentrates. An overview of the filtration literature indicates there are few research reports on the dewatering of iron ore concentrate slurries. There exists a need to understand the principles and mechanisms involved in the filtration of iron ore concentrate slurries with a goal of developing more efficient filtration techniques. This paper presents the results from the first phase of our research program that included the development of a reproducible benchscale filtration technique and the investigation of the filtration behavior of eight iron ore concentrates.

Coal mining is one of the major activities that may affect the natural or existing hydrologic equilibrium of a basin. Consequently, the mining industry is committed to the conservation and protection of the hydrologic balance within and around mining environments. This commitment embodies thorough and careful consideration of the quantitative and qualitative variations and, in general terms, the environmental impacts of mining activity on the natural water systems. A research program was undertaken to study the impacts of full extraction coal mining on the ground water systems at one of the coal basins in the Appalachian region. The primary objective was to provide reliable information for determining the local and possibly the regional effects of longwall mining on well yields, and the hydraulic and hydrogeochemical parameters of the immediate surface and subsurface water resources.

THE terms surface tension .and surface energy are well known when applied to liquids and are generally described by referring to the excess energy of the air: liquid interface as a result of unsaturated molecular forces surrounding the surface molecules of the liquid due to the presence of the air phase on one side. Such unbalanced forces produce the familiar water droplet of spherical form and are generally summed up as a surface tension measured in dynes per centimeter which can be shown mathematically to be equal numerically to a corresponding surface energy expressed in ergs per square centimeter. A specific surface energy, however, is best thought of as the energy necessary to produce one unit of new surface on a substance. Hence, in producing a bubble in a flotation cell the impeller must supply surface energy corresponding to the air: liquid interfacial area on the interior of the bubble. Inasmuch as it is relatively easy to extend or contract the surface of a liquid, there are a number of successful methods for liquid surface tension, or energy, measurement based upon surface deformation. This happy state of affairs does not, however, extend to solids, which are considered to possess surface energies for the same reasons as do liquids, i.e. because of unsaturated ionic bonds at the solid gas interface. As in the case of the flotation cell producing surface on liquids as new bubbles, it takes energy to produce new surface on solids as new particles. As every mill man knows, this surface is produced on mineral solids in a grinding mill by the action of a tumbling mass of iron balls. But here so much energy usually is wasted by the inefficient action of these balls that a large amount of heat is generated, and the surface energy production may be easily confused with the energy necessary to produce this ineffective heat. The tumbling balls and fracturing minerals ultimately take their energy from a rather large electric motor. It has been variously estimated that from 10 to 20 pct" only of this energy from the motor does not appear as heat and may be presumed to appear as surface energy on the minerals present.. Such a production of new surface on the mineral phases is accompanied, of course, by a size reduction that is inevitable as more and more mineral interior molecules become surface molecules by the fracture exposure. This size reduction of mineral particles, although the most obvious feature and perhaps the sole object of the milling operation, is from this energy viewpoint the outward manifestation of the production of surface energy only. Measurement of the characteristic surface energies of pure minerals and their various mixtures in ores would be a step towards understanding of the energetics of the commercial grinding operation. In addition, the characteristic surface energy of a mineral is probably a physical property specific for that mineral, and therefore, from a scientific standpoint, should be measured. It is interesting to note that, in contrast to the large body of work on the surface tensions of liquid systems and biological systems, the field of solid surface energies has been neglected. Prior to. 1920 it is difficult to find more than one or two references to work on solid surface energies in Chemical Abstracts. Since 1920 such references number somewhat less than 100, while those on liquid systems are numbered in the thousands. Much of this apparent neglect of the field of solid surface energies (the term is intended to be somewhat inclusive at this point and refers both to the solid: gas, and the solid: liquid interface) is because of the lack of a reliable method of measurement rather than any lack of scientific curiosity. It was, and still is, difficult to produce new surface on a solid without the simultaneous production of interior changes in the same solid which may consume part of the energy used. THE casting of steel in large molds brings into play all of the undesirable effects that result inevitably from slow cooling. The origin of the molten metal, whether basic or acid open hearth or electric furnace, has little if anything to do with the phenomena involved. If the quantity of molten metal to be cast in a single mold is large enough, there is very little one can do about it-the metal will cool so slowly that 'nothing one can do, other than to provide as good feeding as practicable from an adequate reservoir of metal in the sink head, will be of any avail. Recently we have had occasion to cast a 108-in. octagon ingot weighing 545,700 lb, necessitating the combining of metal from three 100-ton open-hearth heats. This is one of the largest ingots ever made. The body of the ingot weighed 448,800 lb, which includes a bottom pool of about 7500 lb of metal, and the sink-head weight was 96,900 lb, or about 18 pct of the total weight.

Conditions in underground mining are so variable that in approaching the problem of the economies effected by the use of pressure-treated mine ties and mine timbers, it is necessary to secure specific data for each mine. Facts must first be dug out to show the service life of untreated timber and the reason for its failure. Generally speaking, decay is the usual cause of failure, but in some mines mechanical destruction is an important factor. Occasionally the two causes combine to produce fail-urrs, and it is difficult to determine positively which factor is responsible. In making comparisons, it is always necessary to start with the cost in place and for this reason there must be accurate information covering the labor cost of installation and the labor cost of renewals. When treated timber is used, it is necessary to know the specifications for the treating process, whether the timber was painted, dipped, treated open tank, or impregnated under pressure according to standard specifications. It is also necessary to know the preservative used and the amount of the preservative that was retained by the timber after treatment. It is also well to know whether the timber was thoroughly air-seasoned before treatment or was green at the time it was treated. The kind of timber available, both untreated and treated, must be known and all of the factors listed above must be taken into consideration in the study of any problem. Variable Conditions A study was made recently of the untreated mine ties used by a bituminous coal company in two of its mines, which are about 20 miles apart. The mine ties were secured from the same sources for both mines. A careful check was made over a 10-yr. period on the life of untreated main-haulage ties, and it was found that in the mine where the haulage roads were on intake air the average life was approximately 5 yr., while in the other mine, where the haulage roads were on return air, the average life was 2 yr. This paper describes a short, simple well-testing procedure evolved from unsteady-state concepts to appraise wellbore damage in water-input wells. Input rates are changed at specific intervals over a 30-minute period and the wellhead pressure recorded at the end of each interval. From these data, the pressure drop due to the "skin" can be computed. This pressure drop in terms of psi/B/D of input rate is referred to as the "skin factor". Two of these variable-rate tests are required to determine change of wellbore damage and to evaluate well-treatment techniques. There are several advantages to the variable-rate procedure. The necessary data can be obtained with wellhead gauges and meters. There is little interference with normal operations. The short testing period eliminates many interpretative difficulties that come from interference from adjacent wells. The shut-in period required for standard tests before the plot of pressure vs log of time attains a straight line is often 12 hours or more. Such a time period is incronvenient, especially when a well must be tested repeatedly to evaluate change in wellbore characteristics. This variable-rate procedure has been successfully npplied to water-input wells in three fields. For some of the wells, skin factors were calculated from both the standard and the variable-rate tests. These results show good agreement. THEORY OF THE VARIABLE-RATE PROCEDURE In many waterflood input wells, the pressure in the wellbore differs from the pressure in the reservoir immediately adjacent to the well because of the restriction of flow through the skin of the well. If the true pressure of the reservoir at the well, p,, is that pressure which would exist in the well if no skin were present, and p,' is the actual pressure as measured in the well, this difference, is the skin effect. Fig. 1 shows the change in skin effect with change in flow rate. As the flow is reduced, the skin effect is reduced by an amount equal to the change in wellbore pressure minus the change in reservoir pressure. In recent years considerable progress has been made in the development and application of mathematical techniques for the solution of certain problems involving economic "strategies". Such a problem might involve, for example, the scheduling of shipments of a commodity from a number of sources to a number of destinations. The object would be to schedule the shipments in a manner so as to satisfy the destination requirements and at the same time minimize the transportation costs. The solution to such a problem is not necessarily intuitively obvious. The "obvious" solution is frequently far from optimum. If the shipments are to be made from, for example, only two sources to four destinations, the optimum schedule is readily found. However, if shipments are to be made from, say, 10 sources to several hundred destinations, even a competent and experienced scheduler may spend considerable time in finding a reasonable answer. Even then he is not sure that he has the optimum solution. Furthermore, he has no way of knowing how far from optimum the answer is. Consequently, he does not know whether he should accept this solution or seek a better one. Prior to the advent of large high-speed digital computers, little more could be done with such problems because of their great size and multiplicity of possible solutions. A problem involving 20 sources and 50 destinations would require choosing, from a very large number of possible combinations, the optimum combination of 1,000 variables. The best one could do was to utilize intuition, extrapolation from past experience, and other non-exact approaches. With a high-speed computer, however, such problems can be solved providing a reasonable computational procedure (or algorithm) can be utilized. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a procedure (linear programming) and to apply this procedure to a production scheduling problem. THE RESERVOIR PROBLEM A simple reservoir model is used throughout this analysis to illustrate the use of linear programming. Even the simplest reservoir behavior problem is nonlinear in both space and time, but if the geometry is fixed for a particular study and the time variable is quantized, the resultant system may be described by linear constraints on the variable production rates. Crude oil is available from five separate sources and is delivered to a pipeline. Sources 1, 2, 3 and 4 are ideal reservoirs and therefore are subjected to reservoir flow restrictions. Source 5 is labeled "Outside Source" and crude oil from this source is assumed to be available in unlimited quantities without considering reservoir conditions. The general problem is to determine the schedule of crude oil production from five sources which, over an eight-year period and subject to certain restrictions, will result in maximum profit. "Profit" is defined to encompass all economic factors and expenses involved in producing and selling crude oil to a pipeline facility. Such economic factors are lumped to the extent that the term represents the dollars profit from one barrel of crude oil from any of the five sources entering the pipeline system. Table 1 presents the assumed profit per barrel for oil from any of the five sources over each of the four time periods. In this chart the eight years is broken into four equal intervals of two years. The selection of four time periods of two years each and the values representing the potential profit are completely arbitrary selections for the purpose of illustrating this idealized reservoir problem. In any practical application of this work a careful economic study would have to be made in order to estimate potential unit profits for time periods as far in the future as eight years. Interest by petroleum engineers in the flow of three phases—oil, gas and water—in irregularly bounded porous media lies mostly in the performance calculation of water floods of reservoirs that have been partially depleted as the result of expansion of much of the originally dissolved gas. The authors present a method to forecast three-phase flow in complex geometry and explain the details by the use of a specific example of a five-spot water flood of a partially depleted stratified reservoir. In this example, the fluid and rock properties of a field given by Prats, et al,' were used. The computed results fit the field performance more accurately than Prats, et al, and Slider.' The time required for the high-speed digital computer to make the calculations, including the contributions from the different layered zones, is about one minute. INTRODUCTION The declining rate of discoveries of new oil fields in the United States makes the recovery of more oil from known reservoirs more attractive than previously. Water flooding has an excellent proved background for recovering additional oil economically. Accordingly, the main interest of this paper is in this type of recovery. In petroleum engineering studies, commercial interest in three-phase flow is mostly in the water flooding of reservoirs in which the oil has been partially produced by the expansion of dissolved gas. When water is pumped into these reservoirs, three-phase flow takes place. Although this paper is concerned with these conditions, the principles involved could be used for other conditions when and where they come to the fore. Many investigators have made contributions to non-empirical forecast methods using basic scientific engineering principles. Several of these used the oil in place at the start of the water flood and the oil remaining after a large quantity of water has passed through a core for key values in their calculations. Recently, Prats, et al,' and Slider have reduced assumptions by adding the third phase—gas—in their forecasting methods. Slider uses the mobilities in the immediate vicinity of inlet and outlet wells as an aid to simulate the resistance effect in the five-spat pattern of the flow of oil, gas and water. Prats, et al. minimize assumptions by using previously determined laboratory data for determining sweep efficiency in the five-spot pattern. In neither of these papers is the saturation profile continuously affected by permeability-saturation curves. Sheldon and Dougherty- recently described a method that employs continuously changing saturation profiles using permeability curves, has a minimum of assumptions and needs no prior sweep efficiency. The Higgins-Leighton method, described in this paper, has all of these features; however, many of the techniques are different from those of Sheldon and Dougherty. The Higgins-Leighton method, tested in May, 1961, is direct and easy to apply and requires very little computer time to calculate a forecast. The short computer time is especially helpful in the study of a reservoir containing many layers of different relative permeabilities. In the Higgins-Leighton method, the individual pressures do not have to be calculated, as the resistance to flow in each cell in the flow pattern is readily determined without the use of any iterative techniques. The saturation and permeability distributions are readily determined. These data and the shape factor, which is measured only once from the potentiometric model when mobility ratio is one, determine the resistance to flow in each cell. THEORY The authors showed in a previous paper4 that, as an aid to calculating performance, the reservoir can be divided into channels using the streamlines of a potentiometric model as a guide. See Fig. 1. This procedure also was used in this paper. The authors also showed that, by treating conduits as approximately one-dimensional and neglecting pressure gradients transverse to the main flow, the Buckley-Leverett equation may be expressed as The principles expressed by this equation are employed extensively in the three-phase flow, as they were in two-phase flow. A FUNDAMENTAL investigation of the mecha-nism of the ordering reaction and of the accompanying changes in properties has been undertaken, since an extensive study of this process could well contribute to the knowledge of phase transitions in alloys. Cobalt-platinum alloys were chosen for the study since they exhibit interesting and unusual permanent magnet properties.1,2. In addition, the ordering reaction in cobalt-platinum alloys is a convenient one to study experimentally because of the high maximum ordering temperature, the large difference in the X-ray scattering power of cobalt and platinum atoms, and the relative ease with which the alloys can be plastically worked into wire and strip. In the early stages of this study, it became apparent that the published phase diagrams&apos;, &apos; of the cobalt-platinum system contained questionable features, in the region of 40 to 60 atomic pct Co, which were considered in another publication by the authors.4 That portion of the research reported elsewhere on the equilibrium states of cobalt-platinum alloys does not confirm the presence of a previously reported, high temperature disordered tetragonal phase and a low temperature body-centered cubic phase. On the other hand, the structure of the ordered phase is face-centered tetragonal with an atomic distribution analogous to that of CuAu.4 This lattice forms from the disordered face-centered cubic phase in such an orientation that the <100> directions are parallel to the <100> direc-tions of the disordered phase. At compositions other than the ideal 50 atomic pct the ordered phase can exist in equilibrium at high temperatures with the disordered phase. A Widmanstatten pattern of plate-like particles of the ordered phase parallel to (110) planes of the disordered matrix is observed when an initially disordered alloy is held at these temperatures. THE importance of ladle and teeming practice and its relationship to the yield and quality of the product has focused considerable attention on this phase of open-hearth operation. Inherently bad steel cannot be perfected by manipulation during teeming, but through the proper handling of "off heats" serious losses, which in many cases arise, can be greatly minimized. Conversely, good steel can be ruined as a result of poor workmanship in the -pit, and rendered unsuitable for application to orders where exacting surface and physical requirements are essential. Sufficient evidence has been secured to warrant careful investigation of pit operations when an abnormal number of basic defects develop in the semifinished product or are found on the inspection table. This paper is written from the standpoint .of the problems involved in making satisfactory ingots for sheet rolling. Furthermore, since rimming steel is almost universally used for manufacture of sheet, the data presented herein refer particularly to that type of steel. Going back some 30 years in open-hearth .history, the word "pit" properly described the hole into which the ladle was lowered to receive the metal tapped from the furnace. The working space was necessarily limited, and the disposal of slag and metal overflowing the ladle or lost because of breakouts presented a serious problem. The equipment, of course, was rather crude in the light of present-day development. Often no ladle stands were provided, the ladle being hung on the crane beneath the runner. When delayed taps occurred, the ladle was often held in position for many hours, thus tying up pit operations and causing delays to adjacent furnaces. Because of crowded conditions, slag thimbles were not used and a network of cast-steel triangles and old tapping bars, placed before the heat was tapped, was the means for removing slag from the hole. The Menominee range is one of the four great mining belts that flank the western prongs of Lake Superior. It has received its name from its location along the north side of the Menominee river, which at this place flows between the States of Michigan and Wisconsin. The term "range" is derived from the elevated ridge, extending in a westward direction, and along the southern flank of which the iron-ore mines are located. This range is some 200 to 300 feet high above the general level of the adjacent country, and is made prominent by its surroundings of low, swampy lands. Its whole length is about 27 miles, and it is intersected, at intervals along its course, by gaps which are threaded by streams. The geology of the Menominee range is peculiarly interesting. It is composed of three distinct groups of Hurouian rocks. The supporting group consists of light-colored limestone beds of a crystalline, siliceous character, called the "Norway limestone belt." The map, Fig. 1, and the section, Fig. 2, will give a general notion of the position and structure of the range. The properties shaded in the map are those of the Penn Iron Mining Company, which is the Michigan representative of the Cambria Iron Company of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. This belt is at least 1200 feet thick. It outcrops boldly at many localities along the range, especially north of the Norway, Quinnesec and Chapin mines. At Quinnesec it can be studied readily. The next, or Banking group, which is estimated at a thickness of 1000 feet, is called the Quinnesec ore-formation. It consists, in the portion next to the limestone, of siliceons or jasper slates, largely impregnated with iron oxide. These are succeeded by argillaceous hydro-mica black and flesh-colored slates. This formation embraces the deposits of the iron-ores. The third group consists of a series of dark gray, slaty or schistose beds, with occasional quartzose bands, having a thickness of 2000 feet. It is called the Lake Hanbury slate group.

But little has been written concerning the camp of Republic. In 1900 Chatard and Whitehead 1 reported the results of some experiments with samples of ore from the Republic mine, and a few years later Fritz Cirkel2 described the construction, operation, and results attained in the mill at the Mountain Lion mine. From time to time brief articles, mostly of a semi-technical nature, have appeared in the Engineering and Mining Journal and other mining periodicals. The general geology of the camp, especially in regard.to its areal features, has recently been ably described by Joseph B. Umpleby.3 To bring to mind the general features of the district it may perhaps be well to review briefly some facts in regard to it, before discussing the treatment of the ore. I. History and Production. The town of Republic is situated in the NW. corner of Ferry county, about 25 miles south of the International Boundary, on the head-waters of the San Poi1 river, in what was formerly the " north-half" of the Colville Indian reservation. On Washington&apos;s birthday, 1896, this portion of the reservation was thrown open to mineral location, and within a few weeks important discoveries had been made. The present Eureka mining-district was organized, the camp grew apace, and consignments of ore were shipped by wagon to Grand Forks, 30 miles away; or to Marcus, a somewhat greater distance. It is reported that the first 1,500 tons shipped from the Republic mine uetted the owners $160 per ton, after being hauled

The heat flow processes determining the injection and shut-in temperature logs in a water injection well have been analyzed and the theoretical basis for determining the water injectivity profiles from the temperature logs has been presented. Both the injection and the subsequent shut-in logs are necessary to resolve the injection interval into relative water intake strata; the former, to provide an accurate estimation of the thicknesses of the strata, and the latter to indicate the major and minor intake rates into the strata. A procedure is described for estimating the injectivity profile from the temperature logs and is applied to several temperature logs. For a water injection well, a comparison is made of the injectivity profiles obtained from the core analysis, the spinner survey, and the temperature logs. INTRODUCTION In secondary recovery of oil by water flooding, the injectivity profile is needed to obtain diagnostic evaluation of water intake distribution over the injection interval. If the distribution is unfavorable among the various strata, corrective measures can be taken to provide better control. Numerous methods have been developed for determining the injectivity profile from water velocity measurements in well bores. Often, dependence is placed upon core analyses and/or electric logs for estimating the relative water intakes over the injection interval. In many cases, the temperature log method described herein will give results more diagnostic than those obtained through use of the other available methods inasmuch as it is based upon the study of temperature disturbances in and around the well bore as a function of water flow in the well bore and in the formation. This method is the result of analyses of a number of temperature surveys made in water injection wells to determine the point of entry of the water into the formation. The material in this paper is presented in two sections: the first deals with the theoretical study of temperature survey data, and the second deals with the field application. PART I — THEORETICAL TREATMENT OF TEMPERATURE LOG DATA Before discussing the various aspects of heat flow relative to temperature log data, the phenomena that give rise to well bore temperatures — namely, the indigenous formation temperature and the associated rates of heat flow — will be considered. Geothermal Gradient The geothermal gradient is defined as the increment of depth at which the indigenous subsurface temperature increases by l°. It is caused by the continuous flow of heat outward from the interior of the earth. The flow of heat is an equilibrium process between the heat sources, the thermal conductivities of the formations, and the mean surface temperature. Therefore, there is no accumulation of heat energy in the path of heat transmission, and the geothermal gradient for a given formation will depend upon its thermal conductivity.
