Experience has shown how difficult it is to obtain information regarding laboratory-tests in connection with the chlorina-tion-process for the extraction of gold from its ores, and I therefore present the following method, somewhat in detail, for the benefit of those who may desire to pursue research work in this field. The ore chosen was a partly-decomposed porphyry, extremely siliceous and comparatively soft, and of an average value per ton of from $25 to $26 in gold and $0.68 in silver. The chemical analysis gave: Fe,O,, 3.35; FeS, 1.5; MnO,, 0.75; ZuCO,, 4; A1,0,, 3.20; H,O, 0.7 ; SiO, and insol., 83.50 per cent. The ore, first crushed to pass a 5-mesh screen, was coned and quartered until a 45-lb. sample was obtained. Samples for assay and analysis, taken from this lot by means of riffles, were crushed to pass a 100-mesh screen. The original sample was divided into 10-lb. lots, of which one was crushed to pass a 10-mesh screen; another through a 12-; the third through a 20-, and the last through a 30-mesh screen. Because of the production of an excessive quantity of fine material it was deemed inexpedient to crush finer than 30-mesh size—a decision the wisdom of which is proved by the data in Table I., showing the increasing ratio of slimes, in proportion as the ore is crushed finer. In order to determine the percentage of fines in the sizes of mesh selected, a weighed sample of ore was taken from each mesh, and a sample from the 10-mesh lot was passed successively through 20-, 40- and 100-mesh screens, and the percentage remaining on each screen determined. This process was repeated with the 12-, 20- and 30-mesh lots, with the results given in Table I.

DEFENSE Materials Procurement Agency has been moving rapidly to encourage copper industry expansion programs. Although copper production is at a high level, a shortage exists on a world-wide basis as well as on the domestic scene. Projected expansion programs will not ease this current demand for most of them are 2 to 5 years off. Refining facilities are adequate but there is a shortage of ore and scrap, and it is for this reason that the expansion programs are directed at developing more sources of supply. The domestic expansion programmed thus far and understood to have been arranged with price escalation should the domestic price go to 271/20, were summarized by American Metal Markets as follows (dates of announcement are given in parenthesis: .1-Copper Cities Mining Co.'s, $15,000,000 expansion near Miami, Ariz., to be operating about 1954. DMPA will buy 22,500 tons of copper a year up to a given amount on an agreed price of 23¢ per pound, with some exceptions and depending upon salability at a higher price to other purchasers in the U. S. (September 25th). 2-An RFC loan of $60,000 to North Butte Mining Co. to be paid off on the basis of deliveries at a purchase price of 241/20 per pound (September 25th). 3-A $25,000,000 expansion program by Phelps Dodge to provide 38,000 tons per year by late 1954. DMPA would purchase it at a price of 22¢ per pound up to 112,500 tons providing other purchasers in the U. S. will not pay a higher price (September 26th). 4-Anaconda Copper Mining Co. $40,000,000 expansion in Nevada to provide more than 30,000 (might be increased to 45,000) tons per year. DMPA would purchase the copper at 250 per pound for a limited period of time if it is not salable to industrial users at above this price. Production would start around 1953 (November 14th).

THE influence of mineral production on the development of the western United States has been profound. From 1848 to 1860, there was only gold production, the effect of silver began in 1860, and from then on both had a powerful influence. Lead production started in 1863, copper in 1863, and zinc in 1885, but was small until 1898. Gold alone was therefore the stimulus of the early settlement and exploration of the Western States.. But mineral deposits caused neither acquisition of territory nor determination of boundary lines. Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and parts of Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado were formally acquired from Mexico fourteen days after the actual date of the discovery (January 19, 1848)1.2 of gold at Sutters Mill, near the present town of Coloma, California (a discovery which, with the immediate new discoveries, aroused the world several months later) ; but the acquisition was by treaty (under negotiation for some time but signed February 2, 1848)3 in settlement of a war involving the boundaries of the grassy plains of Texas, an area at that time not known to contain any metals, and to date found to have but few metal deposits.4 The international boundary at 49º latitude for the far northwest states was determined by causes other than mineral deposits.

The demand for crude oil on the Pacific Coast during the year 1945. was so acute that the California crude supply had to be augmented by tank-car imports from the Texas and Rocky Mountain fields. Crude imports reached a high of 64,800 bbl. per day during June, with a total of 14,259,000 bbl. imported during the first 11 .months. The U. S. Navy also implemented the crude output from California pools by drilling and completing approximately 300 wells in the Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1 (Elk Hills), from which an established production of 65,000. bbl. per day was reached in late February and maintained until Aug. 17, 1945, when it was reduced to its preprogram level of 15,000 bbl. per day. Even with the conclusion of the Pacific war on V-J day (Aug. 14), the military petroleum product requirements have permitted little material reduction in output of California crude to prewar rates. During the year, a total of 327-760,000 bbl. of crude was produced, or 19 per cent of the total crude production within the United States during the same period, as compared with 310,996,000 bbl. or 18.4 per cent of the nation's crude production in 1944.

I wish to call the attention of the Institute to a peculiar variety of anthracite which occurs in the Buck Mountain vein at our collieries at Drifton, and in the same and other veins in different localities in the anthracite coal-fields. It is known among the workmen as iron-gray or cast-iron. It has a dull, greasy appearance, as if a piece of ordinary anthracite had been rubbed with a dirty and greasy rag and allowed to dry. It was formerly considered a very impure coal containing a high percentage of ash, and was picked out of the coal and thrown away. But the following analysis of it and of its ash, made by Mr. J. Blodget Britton, of Philadelphia, shows that such is not the case, the percentage of ash not being much higher than that of the ordinary anthracites as they are prepared for market. ANALYSIS OF COAL. We found that it burned with intense heat, and apparently as freely as our other coal does. Mr. Britton is probably right in his view, that the difference in appearance is not due to impurities in the coal, but to the fact that the carbon is in a more or less graphitic form, as many of the standard coals are no purer. I bring this before the Institute as I know that a large quantity of this valuable fuel is thrown away every year, on account of its supposed impurities.

THE Enos Coal Mining Co. owns an area underlaid by coal, of approximately 5000 acres. This property is situated 9 miles from Oakland City, in the southern part of Indiana. The mine has been in operation 5 years, during which time some 350 acres have been stripped, and stripping is now proceeding at the rate of about 100 acres per year. TOPOGRAPHY These coal lands consist of gently-rolling agricultural fields which in times past were farmed for wheat. There is no timber and but very little brush to contend with. The overburden varies from 10 to 60 ft. in depth. A thin bed of slate overlies the coal, followed by limestone, which varies from 3 to 15 ft.; this, in turn, is followed by sandstone, slate, shale and clay. There is a very wide variation in the thickness of all of these beds. The coal has an average thickness of 5 ft., and is a good grade of high-volatile bituminous. MINING OPERATIONS Briefly, the sequence of operations is: drilling holes with churn drills; blasting with L. 0. X.; stripping overburden to uncover coal and, finally taking up the coal, which is sent to a tipple for cleaning and sizing. In order to show what is being accomplished by the use of L. 0. X., results will be shown from May to November, 1926, inclusive, and compared to the same period in 1925. No work was done in No. 1 pit during May, 1925, hence all figures are unduly low for this month. Drilling There are in use 8 No. 44 Loomis clipper drills, caterpillar traction with gasoline engines; recently these were equipped with extra heavy stems, measuring 26 ft. overall and 4 ½ in. dia., to increase the speed of drilling. In addition, 4 No. 1 ½ G non-traction drills have been acquired, and are used to save the time of the larger drills when recleaning is necessary.

SUMMARY THE results of an enquiry into the structural nature of some 70 iron alloys containing both nickel and chromium over a considerable range of concentration 'are briefly described in this paper. This study is a part of a comprehensive program of investigation into alloys involving chromium in progress at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. All the compositions studied contained carbon in amount comparable to commercial alloys.

The Leadville district, on the west flank of the Mosquito Range in central Colorado, has produced silver, zinc, lead, gold, and minor metals valued at $512,000,000. The ore deposits are in a sequence of dolomites and quartzites, Cambrian through Mississippian in age and about 500 feet thick, which is extensively intruded by porphyry sills, dikes, and plugs of Tertiary age. The sedimentary rocks and sills dip about 15°E and are broken by many faults, which are predominantly of nearnorth trend and downthrown to the west. The ore deposits are principally blanket or manto replacement deposits, but in the eastern part of the district many veins occur also. The replacement deposits are largely confined to three dolomite units in the stratigraphic sequence. Of these, the uppermost or Leadville Dolomite is the most productive. Most ore bodies are on the underside of porphyry sills and, particularly, beneath sills that occupy unconformities. Many replacement bodies have vein roots or branch from veins. The veins occupy faults and are productive mainly in the section of quartzites and dolomites and included sills. The primary ores consist principally of pyrite, marmatitic sphalerite, and galena but locally contain chalcopyrite, silver minerals, bismuth minerals, and gold. Principal gangue minerals are manganosiderite and jasperoid. The ore deposits have a crude zonal pattern centered around an intrusive center at Breece Hill, which evidently influenced ore deposition thermally. The ore deposits were oxidized to depths of several hundred feet in Miocene time. Bonanza ores mined in the early days were characterized by cerussite, cerargyrite, and embolite. Later, zinc carbonate ores were identified and mined on a large scale. The Leadville district is a complexly faulted and intruded area at the intersection of major fault systems trending N20°W and N15°E in the Mosquito Range. The intensely fractured area evidently localized igneous intrusion and subsequent mineralization. Ore solutions rose on many of the faults in the area, presumably from the same source as the porphyry magmas. Movement on these faults continued into the Pleistocene, displacing ore bodies, oxidation zones, Pliocene sediments, and glacial deposits.

The following report on the structure of copper is the result of work done in the laboratory of the Rome Wire Co. early in 1925. Previous work had indicated to the author that excellent results might be expected if a suitable technique in surfacing and etching could be developed. The resources of the Rome Wire Co. enabled this metal to be studied more intensively than previously, although none of the materials were investigated exhaustively. The material presented is hardly more than a preliminary summary of the most obvious character of the metal; a much longer research would have been necessary to solve many of the pressing problems connected with the casting and working of copper. The Rome Wire Co. has generously released the paper; to Dr. E. H. Darby, technical supervisor of the company, are due particular thanks for his appreciation of the importance of metallographic study of copper and for his effective support in the prosecution of the work and in making its publication possible. Dendrites, Cells and Granules The microscope reveals at least three orders of structural units in copper, as in other metals. The largest structural units are the dendrites —spine-shaped crystals building up the masses of metal when it solidifies from a melt or is crystallized from solutions by chemicals or electricity. The nucleus cells, commonly called "grains," are the largest and most conspicuous units of recrystallized solid metal; the limitations of their growth usually confine their sizes to microscopic proportions, although in "single crystals" they may become as large as the piece of metal itself. The granules are the microscopic fine-structural blocks or laminations that build up the nucleus cells; they are revealed when metal is etched with suitable chemicals. The granules are commonly visible at 500 diameters magnification and are plainly visible at 1000 diameters; magnification of the granular surfaces up to 6000 to 9000 diameters shows no finer units, not because of lack of optical resolution but because the chemical attack has left an unfeatured smooth surface.

Clement Le Neve Foster was born at Camberwell on March 23, 1841, his father being Peter Le Neve Foster, who was secretary of the Society of Arts for 26 years. As a boy of 12 he was sent to school at Boulogne, receiving a preliminary education there; and in 1857, when only 16 years old, he took his degree of Bachelor of Science from the University of France. In October of the same year he returned to London and entered the Royal School of Mines, which was then in Jermyn Street. He distinguished himself by winning a scholarship and a medal, and by securing his degree as Associate of the Royal School of Mines in the abbreviated period of two years. This was followed by a year at the Bergakademie at Freiberg; subseque1:tly he visited several mining districts in Germany and Hungary. On returning to England, in November, 1860, he received from Sir Roderick Murchison an appointment upon the Geological Survey. During five years he was engaged in field-work, first on the Wealden beds in Kent and Sussex, and then in Derbyshire and Yorkshire. At this time his evenings were largely devoted to reading for a degree from London University. In 1861 he matriculated, obtaining the Bachelor of Science in 1863, with honors in biology and a University scholarship in geology; in 1864 he passed the two examinations entitling him to the Bachelor of Arts degree, and in 1865 he received the degree of Doctor of Science. In 1865 he succeeded Mr. Richard Pearce as lecturer to the Miners' Association of Cornwall and Devon. At the same time he became the curator to the museum of the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall at Penzance, a member of the council in 1873, and a life-member in 1874; he made frequent donations to the museum, besides contributing several valuable papers to

The influence of precipitation from solid solution on the subsequent deformation resistance of alloys is well known. However, the influence of precipitation or aging that occurs simultaneously with deformation may be entirely different and of considerable importance. It is thought1 that the presence or absence of a yield point jog in impure iron at room temperature and the presence or absence of discontinuous flow at higher temperatures may be directly related to aging phenomena, particularly since the yield point jog is absent when the carbon and nitrogen are sufficiently removed.2 As a preliminary attack on the problem of simultaneous aging and deformation, three kinds of tests—constant strain rate tensile tests, constant load creep tests, and variable strain rate tensile tests—were carried out on an age hardenahle aluminum alloy. Constant Strain Rate Tensile Tests Stress-strain curves at a strain rale of about 0.001 min-1 were obtained for specimens of 61S that had been quenched into liquid nitrogen after a one-hour solution treatment at 521°C, then aged at room temperature 10 min., 20 min., 4 hr, and 26.5 hr before testing. Strain-time curves were obtained on the same chart with the stress-strain curve by means of an auxiliary pen, driven parallel to the axis of the chart drum at constant speed by a synchronous motor and gear chain. The angle of rotation of the chart drum was proportional to strain. The strain rates reported are the measured slopes of the strain time curves. Constant strain rate was approximated (within a factor of 2) by manual adjustment of the oil inlet valve of the hydraulic testing machine in such a way that the course of the recorder pen was parallel to pre-drawn strain-time lines of the desired slope. Mexican petroleum production for 1928 was approximately 50,000,-000 bbl., the lowest in 12 years, showing a decrease from 1927 of over 14,000,000 bbl. The steady downward trend for the past 7 years has allowed Russia to outrank Mexico by a wide margin for third position and if the expected decline continues during 1929 it should place Persia ahead of Mexico as fourth in rank. The year 1928 was characterized by a continuation of the reentrench-ment previously begun by the oil industry in Mexico in an attempt to adjust itself to the adverse conditions caused by the steady depletion of the fields, the rapidly increasing competition from Venezuela and the United States and the as yet unsettled petroleum legislation and taxation situation. With the exception of the Isthmus of Tehuantepee, drilling in proved fields was considerably curtailed and although the number of wildcats completed exceeded those of the previous year, no extensive drilling programs were undertaken. Practically without exception, the major companies reduced personnel and operations to a point where they could meet existing conditions and mark time while awaiting a more stable basis for the future testing of unexploited regions. Many terminal and transportation facilities were abandoned during the year. Development Only 371 wells were completed during 1928, as against 583 in the previous year and 808 during 1926, and although the percentage of producers in 1928 was 34 per cent., compared to 26 per cent. in 1927, the initial production of -wells was considerably lower than during the previous year, a great number of the wells showing salt water and becoming "strippers" from the time they started to flow. Development is summarized in Table 1. Drilling in the Northern fields did not prove any new pools of importance, the most successful wells being located in the old producing areas of Cacalilao, Panuco and Topila. (Fig. 1 Very few of the producers made more than 1000 bbl. daily, and a great many less than 300 bbl. a day.

Although some of the observers who first paid especial attention to the occurrences of oil and gas in the strata (such as Hunt in 1859, Andrews in 1861; Winchell in 1865, Mendelejeff in 1876, Höfer in 1876, Minshall in 1881, and I. C. White in 1883) seem to have been impressed with the fact that oil and gas deposits were connected with the disturbances in the rocks caused by their upheavalll yet, with the exception of Mendelejeff, and possibly Andrews, these observers do not appear to have understood what is really the one essential factor in the occurrence of oil and gas in the strata: viz., the faulting, uplifting, fracturing, fis-suring, and jointing always accompanying even slight rock disturbances, and in certain districts (petroliferous provinces)2 allowing solfataric hydrocarbon emanations to force their way up from the interior and to reach and impregnate the porous portions of sediments subjected to the disturbances. Instead of this simple explanation to account -for the observed connection between petroleum deposits and rock disturbances, most of the observers mentioned above, and many others who have foliowed them on the same lines since, have entirely reversed the problem. To them, instead of the dissemination of gases from fissures into the sediments, it presented the accumulation and concentration, according to anticlinal or other geologic structures, of oil and gas originally present throughout the whole mass of the strata where they were produced by the decomposition or distillation of organic remains. Whether this important problem involves accumulation from sources within the strata themselves, or infiltration and dissemination from outside sources, may be easily determined if all preconceived ideas are put aside and the established facts only are considered. [ ] Professor Hibbard's paper presents a very interesting theory concerning the influence of texture on the tendency of brass tube to stress-corrosion crack. I should like to present the result of some work done in 1941 which may throw further light on the subject. In the first place, in regard to his review of the influences of grain boundaries, we not only confirmed the findings which he quoted, but also were unable to crack single crystals of beta brass in the standard mercurous nitrate test in 50 hr under loads up to 18,500 psi. Samples containing two or more crystals of beta brass always cracked at grain boundaries and generally followed the same pattern as for alpha brass, although cracking occurred sooner than in alpha brass under the same conditions. Such a specimen is shown in Fig 4. Second, at the possible risk of repetition, we should like to call attention to the reported role of grain size as influencing the tendency to stress-corrosion crack. This phenomenon, originally mentioned by Dr. Allan Morris in the Transactions, AIME, 1931, is illustrated in Fig 5, showing the effect of variations in grain size on the tendency of drawn brass wires to crack under load in the mercurous nitrate solution. This was taken from my work published in Proceedings A.S.T.M. 41, (1941), 905.

X-ray diffraction, differential thermal, ad rnetallo-graphic methods were used to establish the Dy-Pb Phase diagram. Lead additions lower the 1377°C transformation temperature of dysprosium to 1360°C leading to an inverted peritectic reaction. The 327°C melting point of lead is lowered by dysprosium additions to about 326°C yielding a eutectic reaction. A second eutectic reaction occurs at 13.3 at. pct Pb and 1200°C. The dysprosium-richest intermetallic compound DysPb3 melts congruently at 1695°C and crystallizes in the hexagonal Mn5Si3 (D8,) type structure. The peritectic decomposition temperatures for the remaining compounds are Dy5Pb, at 1555C, DyPb2 at 955C, and DyPb3 at 880°C. A fifth compound near the DyPb stoichiometry exists over a 310°C temperature range decomposing at 1130°C by means of an inverted peritectic reaction and melting incongruently at 1440°C. The crystal structures of the compounds are discussed. A systematic study of the rare earth-lead alloy systems is underway in an effort to supply information concerning the alloying behavior of the rare earth metals. The Dy-Pb phase diagram is the fourth system to be investigated in this study. The Yb-Pb,1 Y-Pb,2 and Eu-Pb 3 diagrams have been published recently. Utilization of the rare earth series of metals as a research tool in this manner should yield a better understanding of alloy formation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The lead used in this investigation was obtained from Cominco Products, Inc., and was specified to be 99.99 pct pure. The dysprosium was prepared in this Laboratory by the calcium reduction of the fluoride followed by distillation of the dysprosium. The major impurities in the dysprosium in ppm are: A1 (<40), Ca (400), Er (<50), Gd (<200), Ho (<200), Mg (<50), Si (30), Ta (400), Tb (<100), Y (<50), 0 (651, H (15), N (not detected), F (430), C (35). Alloy Preparation. Most of the alloys were prepared by melting weighed amounts of dysprosium and lead in sealed tantalum crucibles. The tantalum crucibles were sealed by are-welding in a He-Ar atmosphere welding chamber. Thus the alloys are in contact with He-Ar at about 1 atm pressure. Homogenization was achieved by holding them in the liquid state for about 1 hr, cooling, inverting the crucibles, remelting, and repeating the process at least twice. Since these alloys were prepared in sealed tantalum crucibles, chemical analysis for final composition was thought to be unnecessary. No detectable reaction of these alloys with the tantalum crucible was observed by metallographic examination. Metallographic evidence was also used to confirm the homogeneity of some of the alloys prepared in this manner. The compositions of a few alloys, which were prepared by nonconsum-able are-melting, were corrected for the small weight losses involved by assuming that the weight loss is due to vaporization of lead. The specimens obtained from the alloy samples were prepared under a dry-argon atmosphere because they were rapidly attacked by air and moisture. Thermal Analysis. Differential thermal analysis methods were used to determine the liquidus curves and reaction horizontals of the system. Both Pt vs Pt + 13 pct Rh and W + 5 pct Re vs W + 26 pct Re thermocouples were used to measure the temperature. An X- Y recorder was used to record the specimen temperature and differential electromotive force between the specimen and molybdenum standard. The arrest temperatures were measured potentiometri-cally. The accuracy limits (* values) associated with the reaction temperatures obtained by this method were estimated on the basis of both the reproducibility of the particular temperature value and the accuracy of the thermocouple at a given temperature. Liquidus temperatures were obtained from cooling arrest data while both heating and cooling arrest data were used to establish the horizontals of the diagram. Heat treatments during the thermal analyses of the alloys between 40 and 70 at. pct Pb were necessary in order to approach equilibrium conditions. The samples were held at temperatures between the various peritectic horizontals for l to 2 hr before the thermal analyses were continued. The entire range of compositions was investigated at the expense of a minimum amount of materials by adding appropriate amounts of lead to master alloys. More than sixty alloys were analyzed by this differential thermal method and for each alloy the results given herein are taken from two or three heating and cooling cycles. X-Ray and Metallographic Methods. Slice specimens for metallography and powder specimens for X-ray diffraction were prepared from rod-shaped samples which had been melted in sealed 0.62 5-cm-diam tantalum crucibles. The specimens were heat-treated in sealed tantalum crucibles which were protected by sealing them in argon-filled quartz ampules. Quenching was accomplished by breaking the ampules in ice water after heat treatment. X-ray powder specimens were sealed in 0.3-mm-diam glass capillaries under a dry-argon atmosphere. Copper, iron, and chromium radiation were used to obtain the powder patterns for these alloys. More than 150 powder patterns were obtained for specimens of various compositions and heat treatments. Does mine-sampling show the commercial value of a coal, and if so, how should it be done? This question is often asked, but seldom answered. During the past summer, while engaged in securing coal for the Government coal-testing plant at St. Louis, I had an excellent opportunity to obtain information on this subject, and the results seem to furnish an answer to the questions propounded above. Sampling for the Geological Survey Coal-Testing Plant. In organizing the work of the testing-plant, it was decided that coal in car-load lots only would be accepted for testing, also that this coal should be loaded under the immediate supervision of a representative of the plant, so as to be certain that the car-load sample would be representative. As an additional check on the work, two mine-samples were to be collected from each mine visited, and these samples, as well as the sam¬ple from the car when it was received at the testing-plant, were to be carefully analyzed at the chemical laboratory, which was established in connection with the plant and operated under the direction of Prof. N. W. Lord, of the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Mine-Sanmhling:-Mine-samples were collected with great care by me and my assistants, Messrs. J. Shober Burrows, John W. Groves and Frank W. De Wolf. The dominant idea in the regulations which were adopted for mine-sampling was that it should be done in such a manner that the sample would have the same composition as the commercial output of the mine. .

During the year 1938, there was some drilling in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, as follows: Queens1and.—At Hutton Creek, lat. (approx.) 25° 45&apos; S.; long (approx.) 149°, drilling was done by Drillers limited (subsidiary Oil Search) to a depth of 4688 ft., to the Lower Permian(?). There were small gas showings. The hole mas abandoned. At Mt. Bassett, lat (approx.) 26" 20&apos; S.; long. (approx.) 149", Roma Blocks Oil Co. No Liability drilled to a depth of 4033 ft. The hole bottomed in granite. There were small showings of&apos; oil and gas above bedrock in what may be Permian but is not yet determined. The company intends to run a formation tester. New South Wales.—At Kulnura, lat. (approx.) 33" S., long (approx.) 151°, the Kamilaroi Oil Company Ltd. (subsidiary of Oil Search Ltd.) drilled to a depth of 6293 ft. The Permian, probably Upper Marine Series, was reached. Drilling is to continue. Victoria.—At Romawi, lat. (approx) 37" 50&apos; S., long. (approx.) 147" 45&apos;, a dry hole 3246 ft. deep bottomed in the Jurassic and was abandoned. It was drilled by the Governments of the Commonwealth and the State of Victoria. At Lakes Entrance, 1st. (approx.) 37" 50&apos; S.; long. (approx) 748", a small showing of&apos; oil (a few pints a day) was obtained from a well drilled 1275 It., to the Upper Oligocene-Glaucnnitc series, by the Austral Oil Drilling Syndicate, No Liability. Future Drilling Preparations is are being made by companies fur further test drilling in 1939, and the Governments of the Common wealth and the State of Victoria are continuing test holes for information only in the Gippsland district of Victoria. In Papua and New Guinea, no test drilling was done in 1938, but several companies are carrying on geological investigation and it is expected that, some test holes will be drilled during 1939.
