At Sumitomo Metal Industries, technologies for manufacturing metallurgical coke have been developed, under the names of Sumicoal System and DKS formed coke processes. Sumicoal System is the process utilizing approximately 70% conventional fine coal, 30% briquettes charge, and 2-3% caking substance. This technology was industrialized in 1975, and now the blending ratio of non-coking coal has reached up to 20%. On the other hand, a large scale demonstration plant using the DKS process was constructed and operated over one year. As the result of that test, it is thought that the DKS process has also reached the stage of industrialization. This paper will describe these new coking technologies.

Cylindrical magnesium single crystals were deformed in torsion. The axis of torsion was the basal pole. Five crystals were deformed to different strains between 0.08 and 1.03 and then sectioned in order to determine their dislocation densities using the transmission electron microscope. The work hardening rate of all specimens was at least an order of magnitude higher than that normally associated with easy glide in a tension test and comparable to that obserzed in stage B of a tension test. The correspondence between stage B in a tension test and the initial stages of a torsion test is believed to result from the fact that in both cases deformation occurs in a structure containing roughly equivalent densities of the dislocations associated with the three basal slip vectors. THERE are three basic ways of changing the shape of a crystal using slip dislocations. The crystal can be sheared along a slip direction in a slip plane; it can be bent about an axis in the slip plane normal to the slip direction; and, if the slip plane contains multiple slip directions, it can be twisted or rotated about the slip plane normal. Of the three processes, generally known as translational, flexural, and rotational slip, only rotational slip has not been extensively investigated. The object of the present research was to obtain basic information about this phase of crystalline plasticity. This paper is concerned with some aspects of the stress-strain curves obtained by twisting magnesium crystals about their basal poles. Magnesium was selected for four reasons. One, its recovery rate at room temperature is relatively low. Two, single crystals may be easily grown. Three, at room temperature the critical resolved shear stress for basal slip is about two orders of magnitude lower than that for nonbasal slip, so that rotational slip might be expected to occur primarily by basal slip. Finally, relationships between flow stress, shear strain, and dislocation density have been determined for tensile deformation of magnesium crystals,' thereby providing a basis of comparison for the torsional results. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Crystals were grown from 0.5 in. diam extruded sublimed magnesium rod furnished by the Dow Chemical Co. who reported that it contained in weight percent less than 0.0003 Al, 0.01 Ca, 0.01 Cu, 0.0012 Fe, 0.001 Mn, 0.0005 Ni, 0.003 Pb, 0.001 Si, 0.01 Sn, and 0.02 Zn, with the balance magnesium. All crystals were grown in a dried argon atmosphere using Jill-son's2 modified Bridgman technique. Two different methods were used to obtain crystals with the basal plane normal to the specimen axis. These included direct growth from seeds of the proper orientation, and spark machining (trepanning) of 0.5 in. diam cylinders from larger (1.5 in. diam) randomly grown crystals. The crystals thus produced were polished in a 20 pct HC1 water solution and then etched in a 1 pct HC1 water solution to develop etch pits lying in rows parallel to the basal plane trace. The crystals were then revolved about their axes on the stage of a low-powered microscope. Torsion specimens were prepared only from those crystals whose axes were normal to the rows of etch pits. It is estimated that this simple orientation method was accurate to about 51 deg. 1.625 in. long cylinders were next cut from these selected crystals and then acid machined in a 20 pct HC1 water solution into torsion specimens with a 1 in. long by 0.30 in. diam reduced gage section. Following this, they were annealed in air at 400°C and furnace cooled to room temperature. The specimens were given a final polish in a 10 pct HC1 water solution, rinsed in ethanol, dried, and cemented into brass grips with an epoxy resin. In addition to the torsion specimens, several tensile specimens with their basal planes at 45 deg to the stress axis were also prepared with similar dimensions except that the gage sections were increased to 4 in. in length. THE OUTBREAK of World War II found Phelps Dodge, thanks to both foresight and good fortune, in a position to increase production of its mines and factories to meet the insatiable military and domestic needs of the times, far beyond all previous records. With the timely completion of the expansion program at Morenci, the company's copper output rose to approximately 447 million pounds in 1942 and to over 478 mil- lion pounds the next year, compared to some 300 million pounds in 1939. To meet the civil and military needs for fabricated cop- per products, the Phelps Dodge Copper Products Corporation carried out an expansion program comparable in size to that of the Phelps Dodge mining operations. It built new plants, enlarged and reorganized those already in operation, multiplied the number of technical experts on its staff, adopted new methods and new machines for the new prod-

The electro-optic coefficients of LiNbO, and KTao.,5Nboe3,O3 (KTN) have been experimentally determined at the HeNe laser wavelengths of 0.6328, 1.15, and 3.39 µ. The coefficients were calculated fronz the retardation induced by an applied electric field. The retardations were measured by observing one or move transmission maxima and minima as a function of the applied field, and by measuring the retardation directly with a Babinet-Soleil compensator. The values obtained agree quite well with those previo~lsly reported by others. Extinction ratios as high as 3000:l have been observed. Resistivities and Curie temperatures have also been measured. Light-induced optical inhornogeneities in LiNbO, repovted by others have been observed. CONSIDERABLE interest has recently been shown in the electro-optic properties of LiNb03 (Refs. 1 and 2) and KTN.3, 4 These crystals have a number of advantages over such well-known materials as KDP. These advantages include: 1) the infrared transmission of KTN and LiNb03 extends to 5 p whereas that of KDP cuts off at 1.5 p ; 2) driving voltages required for modulators using these materials are considerably lower than those required for KDP. After first discussing some theoretical considerations of the electro-optic effect, we will report the results of measurements of the dc electro-optic coefficients of these materials at wavelengths of 0.6328, 1.15, and 3.39 p. THEORY The generalized equation for the electro-optic effect can be written: Although lattice polarization is the fundamental variable, rather than the applied electric field, we follow the convention of expressing the linear electro-optic effect in terms of the applied field. For LiNbO the quadratic terms are negligible. Since KTN has a center of symmetry the rijk tensor is 0. After applying the usual symmetry considerations and index contractions,* the rijk and gijkl tensors can be expressed as follows: LiNbOaT If field directions are now chosen, the change in refractive index and the angle between the induced optic axes and the crystallographic axes can be found. The induced rotations of the principal axes of the index ellipsoid for fields in principal crystallographic directions are given in Table I. Since KTN is initially isotropic, the principal axes in the zero-field condition are parallel to the crystallographic axes. The induced retardations are given in Table 11. WE hear much in these days about "tailor-made" steels. Farseeing executives have sensed the demand for metals of improved and special properties, with those properties deliberately built into the steel in order to fit it for a particular use or group of uses. They have set their metal-lurgists at work to produce what the customer needs, even though the tonnage required may not, at least at first, be great. As the metal-lurgists bring out such metals, the products are advertised and the customer becomes increasingly conscious that he no longer has to take "ready-made" steel as the only thing available, whether it fits his needs or not, but that there are plenty of steelmakers ready to serve his specific needs with a tailor-made steel. Of course this is nothing new in the realm of rather highly alloyed steels to be heat-treated. The automotive industry demanded and got such steels long ago. Indeed, one could not design a modern car using only non-heat-treated carbon steel, since an engine of present horsepower would be so heavy that the gasoline required merely to lug the engine itself around would be absurd. Many different alloy steels and many different heat-treatments are required to produce the fine gradations of properties and the strength per unit weight that are needed in each particular part. Aircraft designers, of course, count a high strength-weight ratio in the materials used as Article I in their constitution, and they too, and in outstanding degree, require tailor-made alloys. Aircraft and automobiles may be considered as the tail coats and Tuxes of the metallurgical tailors. Nowadays there is also a demand for business suits, in the form of high-strength alloys to reduce dead load and so increase payload, all through the transportation industry. We hear most about weight-saving design and materials in respect to the railroads, with the spectacular new high-speed passenger trains and the prosaic freight car. The latter sounds especially sweet to steel-mill ears, because it means tonnage. While most of us think of these developments, and of the engineering acceptance of high-strength materials as "new," the fundamentals are of almost hoary antiquity. It is the widespread availability of a variety of materials and their general acceptance that are new.

MANY of the failures in vocational education are due to the fact that the educational methods were not designed to the capabilities, habits, and environments of those to be trained; rather they were based on the policy that education is education and lessons are lessons, whether for youngsters of fifteen or for men of forty. Vocational education among miners involves, first, a study of the men themselves, their habits, and the use of their leisure time; second, a study of the differences between the methods of teaching required for men and for children. Certain fundamental requirements of training methods for miners are reasonably universal and may be applied with success to any ordinary mining community. The rate of labor turnover is another consideration; it would be useless to design a four-year course for men who remain in one place only a few months.

By means of top-slicing methods, wide veins, masses, or thick beds of soft ore may be mined, where the caving of the overburden is of no consequence. The ore is mined in a series of horizontal floors or slices, taken in descending order, from the top of the deposit. Each floor is mined in small sections, the roof of each section being allowed or forced to cave before an adjacent section is attacked. COLLIGAN*-I can best illustrate my opinions by drafting another five year plan (Table 2). This plan is set up following the same stipulations outlined by Dr. Behre, namely: (I) the student is preparing himself for commercial work as a mining geologist; (2) he is attending an institution with a sufficiently broad curriculum (that is, engineering school and mining school as well as liberal arts college) to furnish the courses listed; and (3) he is not planning to continue his studies through to a doctor's degree before going into commercial work. A comparison of my study plan (Table 2) and that submitted by Dr. Behre (Table I) will at once point up the basic similarity, due to the obvious fact that there are so many essential courses which must be included in any outline of study. However, a more detailed analysis will show up certain differences, which, in fact, are only certain refinements on Dr. Behre's program. These I plan to discuss in order of their importance. The first and most important change is the addition of 12 hr of optional subjects, making a total of 24 hr of optional subjects as against a total of 12 hr under Dr. Behre's schedule. This of course entails the elimination of certain courses, which I shall discuss later. However, I wish to make it clear that I suggest eliminating these courses not because I feel that they are unnecessary, but rather because I feel the optional courses are more necessary to the complete education of the individual. I appreciate that Dr. Behre recognizes the importance of the cultural side of education, but I take issue with his thesis that the student will get it without credit and in his spare time. I do not think that the average college student, and certainly not the college freshman, is mature enough to know what he needs and where to get it in his spare time. I think it must be "spoon-fed"; he must be oriented through specific courses. University life (or should I say "college life") is too full of athletics, fraternity activities, dances, "bull sessions," and countless other enjoyable distractions, all of which contribute to the "full man." I fail to see how the average young American male can possibly sandwich in a necessary complement of "cultural activities" in his spare time. Since these latter activities do not fall within the pattern set by the "group," and show less promise of immediate return in enjoyment, or increased social status on the campus, they are bound to suffer in competition with the more popular, "group" activities. No doubt much of the criticism levelled against arts colleges, namely, that the cultural courses are useless, is well taken, for the culture

BOTANICAL methods of prospecting for metalliferous ores are based on the premise that deposits at depth may be reflected chemically in surface vegetation. For the past several years, on behalf of the Atomic Energy Commission, the U. S. Geological Survey has investigated on the Colorado Plateau the application of botanical methods to uranium prospecting. Results suggest that orebodies may be found under a considerable cover of barren sandstone through the absorption of uranium and associated trace elements by plants growing at the ground surface. Plant physiologists have demonstrated that uranium is a necessary nutrient for plant growth and therefore is present in all plants.' The amount present is small but measurable. The absorption of uranium by plants growing over ore deposits forms the basis, therefore, for a method of prospecting by plant analysis.

A technique is described whereby the resistance of an emudian to breaking can be quantitatively determined. Produced ailfield emulsions are usually the water-in-oil type and, accordingly, do not conduct an electrical current. However, there is a threshold of A-C voltage pressure above which an emulsion will break and current will flow. The more stable an emulsion, the higher the required voltage. A Fann Emulsion Tester, modified so that low voltages (0 to 10 v) can be accurately measured, is suitable. This technique has application in evaluating the effect of a demuksifier on the stability of an emulsion. Emulsions can, in essence, be titrated with demulsifiers by adding a quuntity of demulsifier, stirring, and measuring the voltage required to cause current to flow. Any synergistic effect of two or more materials added simultaneously can be followed accurately. A demulsifier that significantly lowers the threshold voltage (from 100 to 400 v to 0 to 10 v for the emulsions in this study) is effective and can cause the enlulsion to break. A demulsifier that will bring about this drop in the threshold voltage at low concentration ir very desirable. The technique is also well adapted for rapidly screening demulsifiers. INTRODUCTION Stable emulsions in produced reservoir fluids resulting from certain well stimulation and completion procedures are common problems. The use of suitable demulsifiers can often mitigate these difficulties. At the present time, a rapid and efficient method for selecting satisfactory demulsifiers is not available. It is badly needed. Reliance is now placed primarily on trial-and-error procedures. A new test method has been developed which permits a more rapid and precise selection of demulsifiers. It involves measuring the electrical stability potential of an emulsion before and after a demulsifier has been added. This paper describes this method and shows where it should have application in field emulsion problems. NATURE OF OILFIELD EMULSIONS Two immiscible components must be present for an emuhion to form; we are concerned here with crude oil and water. An emulsifier must be present for tin emulsion to be stable. J Emulsifiers can be substances which are soluble in oil and /or mter and which lower interfacial tension. They can be colloidal solids such as bentonite, carbon, graphite, or asphalt which collect at the interface and are preferentially wet by one of these phases. Unrefined crude oils can contain both types of emulsifiers, A popular theory is that, of the two phases in an emulsion, the dispersed phase will be the one contributing most to the interfacial tension.' Usually this phase contains the least amount of emulsifier. The stability of a water-in-oil emulsion is affected by the fol1owing: l) viscosity; (2) particle or droplet size; (3) interfacial tension between the phases; (4) phase-volume ratios; and (5) the difference in density between the phases. A stable emulsion is usually characterized by high-viscosity, small droplets, low interfacial tensions, small differences in density between its phases, and slow separatian of the phases. It also has low conductivity (high electrical stability potential). Water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions"' are both common; however, oil field emulsions are predominantly water-in-oil emulsions. The emulsions which commonly occur during oompletion and stimulation operations contain a combination of several of the following: acids, fracturing fluids (oil, water, acid), and formation water and oil. Produced emulsions usually contain formation water and oil. Emulsions form in oil wells because oil and water are mixed together at a high rate of shear in the presence of a naturally occurring or unavoidably produced emulsifier. During the completion and stimulation of productive zones, and while formation fluids are being produced, oil and water are very often commingled. These mixtures are formed into emulsions by agitation which occurs when the fluids are pumped from the surface into the matrix of the formation or produced through the formation to the surface. Restrictions to flow (such as perforations, pumps, and chokes)".'" increase the level of agitation; tight emulsions are more likely to form under these conditions. Often an emulsified droplet is an emulsion itself.'" Therefore, emulsion-breaking problems can be quite complex. The complexity can be even greater if a third phase (gas) is included. Demulsifiers operate by tending to reverse the form of the emulsion. During this process, droplets of water become bigger, viscosity is lowered, color becomes darker, separation of the phases faster and electrical stability potential approaches zero. Any of these effects could be followed as a means of determining emulsion stability. However, electrical stability potential is the most reproducible and most easily measured parameter for following the stability of a water-in-oil emulsion.

Early in the present century, prospect-ing was active in the area of the present Miami district. There were plenty of blue and green copper outcroppings, but very little ore of a grade that would stand shipping costs had been uncovered. Late in the first decade of the century, tunnels were driven into the north and south slopes of the Inspiration ridge, and two of them exposed disseminated copper sulphide ore. This was the original discovery of such ore on the ground of what eventually became the Inspiration Division of the consolidated company. By 1910 exploration of the ground area was well along and by 1911 underground development had been started. In the next few years a large tonnage of disseminated copper ore had been proven— sufficient to justify the expenditure of several million dollars in mine development and for mine equipment plus large sums for treatment plants. The mine and treatment plants were placed in production July 1, 1915. To Jan. I, 1945, there had been produced from the mines of the Inspiration Consoli-dated Copper Co., more than 106,000,000 tons of ore. Nearly all of this tonnage had been recovered by block caving. GeologIcal and EconomIc FActors Block caving is a mining system based on the fact that if a mass of rock has a sufficient number of fractures and planes of weakness the mass will disintegrate if the support of an area of sufficient size is taken away—that is, "undercut." If the material that caves away from the bottom of a block is drawn off the spalling is progressive. There is a limit to the speed of this spalling or caving action, which varies with the structure of the rock being caved. If the rock is drawn at a rate faster than the caving rate, and if this drawing is continued too long, a void may be created that could make a very dangerous condition if the area should drop as a block and force the air below the uncaved rock out through the raises and drifts. This can be a very destructive force. On the other hand, if the broken material is not drawn fast enough the swell of the material in place to broken material would pack the mass until it was almost solid again and could not be drawn without much blasting, or perhaps even partially undercutting again. Geologically therefore it would seem that any rock with seams and fractures would cave; but for block caving there should be enough seams and fractures in a limited area so that such an area will cave and produce a product that can be drawn safely, rapidly enough and at a cost justified by the value of the product being drawn. At the Inspiration the disseminated ores occur in two formations, the Pinal schist and the Schultze granite. There is no material difference in the grade of the ore formed in the schist and in the granite. The chief copper minerals are chalcocite, malachite, azurite and chrysocolla. Other copper minerals occur in limited quantity.

The present study was made to determine the laws governing the formation of the primary? crystal structure during solidification. Most of the experiments were carried out on chill castings, but from the resiilts it will be possible to draw certain conclusions as far as sand castings are concerned. It is necessary to discuss first a number of theories, which are generally adopted for explaining the structure of an ingot. Usually, the structure of an ingot consists of the following three zones (Fig. 1): (1) a chill layer of small at-random oriented crystals; (2) a layer of columnar crystals; (3) a zone of equiaxed crystals. The tensile properties of the chill layer and the equiaxed range are usually much better than in the columnar range, particularly the planes that are formed by the columnar crystals growing from two sides at right angles have low tensile properties. This is one of the reasons why columnar crystals in ingot structures are undesirable.

Petroleum has been found in Russia in various localities from north to south, as may be seen from the list given below: (a) In the basin of the Petchora river, Northern Russia. (b) In the basin of the Volga river, in the governments of Samara and Saratoff. (c) In the government of Astrakhan and in the Uralsk territory, close to the northern and eastern coast of the Caspian sea. (d) At Grozny in Northeastern Caucasus. (e) In the Daghestan territory, Eastern Caucasus, on the Caspian sea. (f) On the Apsheron peninsula (Baku and other districts) close to the Caspian sea shore. (g) On the island of Tcheleken in the caspiah sea, also on the island of Sviatoi. (h) In the Transcaspian territory on the Neftianaia Gora (Oil hill) and on the surrounding hills. (i) In the Ferghana valley in Russian Central Asia. (j) On the Kertch-and Taman peninsulas on the Black sea. (k) In Siberia it has been discovered in the Transbaikal territory and on the island of Sakhalin.. ' ' In the above-mentioned districts petroleum has been found to exist under different geological conditions and to vary in its chemical and physical properties. At the present time petroleum is produced in Russia at Baku, Grozny, on the island of Tcheleken, in the Ferghana district, and in the Uralsk territory. The yearly production in 1912 throughout the Russian Empire amounted to 69,400,000 barrels, of which the Baku fields were responsible for 52,000,000 barrels. This shows that the Balm fields on the Apsheron peninsula are the chief oil-producing centers in Russia, being at the same time the oldest of all our oil fields. In this paper I shall discuss the Baku fields only, leaving all the others until a later date. The Apsheron peninsula in the Eastern Caucasus protrudes into the Caspian sea in the shape of a triangle some 47 miles long covering a total area of some 750 square miles. The eastern part of the peninsula is a flat, slightly rolling plain, rising in its highest parts to 140 to 170 ft. above

This area is in the Old Hat mining district, southern pinal county, and is about 31/25 miles southwest of the town of Mammoth on the San Pedro River And one mile south of the Mammoth mine at Tiger, Arizona, The property consists of over 150 contiguous lode claims. The old Hat district was prospected prior to the civil war, but there was little or no production until 1881.1 The chief producers have been the Mammoth and Mohawk mines, now consolidated and operating as the st. Anthony Mining and Development Co., Ltd. Production to 1936 was $5,200,000, of which 83 pet was gold.2 Since 1940 the production has been chiefly lead and zinc, and some molybdenum and vanadium. There are a few small properties in the vicinity that have produced very minor tonnages of copper ore. In the San Manuel group there are claims which have been held continuously from 1906 to the present time, and at least two churn-drill holes were put down on or near the outcrop in 1917. No logs for these holes are available, but it is assumed that the grade of copper encountered was not sufficient to encourage further exploration. A small amount of ore has been shipped from open cuts on the San Manuel outcrop area, but there is no record of the tonnage Or grade. It is estimated that not more than 50 tons were mined. These cuts, plus a few shallow shafts and some short adits indicate limited and unenthusiastic prospecting at San Manuel. In 1942, through the efforts of James M. Douglas, R. B. Giffin, Victor Erickson, and Henry W. Nichols, owners of the Sari Manuel group, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and War Production Board authorized the United States Geological Survey to investigate the property, and by their recommendation, the United States Bureau of Mines was authorized to put down a limited number of churn-drill holes. The Bureau of Mines carried On drilling from November 1943 to February 1945 Seventeen holes were drilled, varying from 305 to 1990 ft in depth. The property was brought to the attention of Magma Copper Co. in June 1944, and an option agreement was made with the Owners. Subsequently, a group of claims lying north of the original group and held by the Apex Lead Vanadium Mining Corp, and a group to the east held by the Quarelli family, were optioned. In the dry regions of the globe many silver-deposits display certain remarkable features, which at the same time are so totally unlike anything met with among ore-bodies elsewhere that they hare long presented exceptional dificulties, not only to a satisfactory explanation of their origin, but to economical milling. A most striking peculiarity of these ores is the haloid character of many of their bonanzas. To this fact more than to any other may be ascribed most of the unusual uncertainties of mining-operations in desert countries—the marvelous local richness of the ores under certain conditions and the often abrupt transition to utter poverty; the inadequacy of ordinary prospecting customs and the constant devising of new exploratory methods; the unaccountable losses in smelting and the continual change in treatment-practice. For these anomalies certain climatic conditions seem to be chiefly responsible.

FROM Aug. 31, 1937, until Apr. 30, 1939, there were 40,872,610 bbl. of oil run to storage in California; from Apr. 30, 1939, to Aug. 31 of the same year 5,512,912 bbl. were withdrawn from storage. But from Aug. 31, 1937, to Aug. 31, 1939, the number of producing wells in the state has increased from 17,706, with a potential production of 1,323,202 bbl., to 18,910, with a potential of 2,302,282 bbl. Thus, in a period of two years, during the first 20 months stocks increased over 1/3 and during the following four months stocks decreased 1/30. In the same two years the number of productive wells increased 1/15 and potential increased 3/4. Undoubtedly, the large increase in stocks created the pressure that caused the reduction in stocks that followed; yet this has come about in spite of the larger number of wells and higher potential. Cause of the change was the adoption on May 17, 1939, by the Central Committee of California Oil Producers of a uniform method of oil curtail-ment for all wells throughout the state. Acceptance of the method in the four months following adoption by practically all fields in California indicates that producers generally are convinced of its merit and fairness. True, some operators still overproduce, but the restraint practiced by the remainder of the industry has been sufficient to turn a situation headed for chaos into one of reasonable stability. Credit for this change goes to the industry itself, because it has all been accomplished under voluntary oil curtailment.
