(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) IN any discussion of this very large subject we are confronted at the outset with so many obstacles that at best only a fragmentary and rather disconnected presentation can be made of it, and my hope is that building from the few facts I have to offer a more complete knowledge may be secured. In the whole intermountain and Pacific. Coast region, west of Pueblo, Col., and from Canada to Mexico, there is no production of pig iron, and steel production is confined to the manufacture of a small amount of open-hearth steel from scrap. When we consider the area, the resources, and the several centers of population, this condition seems anomalous, even in. the face of every counter argument as to cheap water transportation, or other means of transport from the Atlantic Seaboard or from the iron and steel centers of the Middle West. This comatose condition, if such a term may be applied, is certainly riot due to a lack of all the essential materials and factors for success in iron and steel smelting, but is rather, I think, due largely to the general fact that it is only within a comparatively few years that the centers of population on the Pacific Coast have attained a size that would entitle them to the position of distributing or freight centers, or that the "back country" has been enough built up to make it sufficiently interesting to the railroads to foster trade from the local centers to the interior points rather than seek to supply such local centers and the interior by a transcontinental haul.

Borehole information is often the only source of information on rock conditions at depth during the stage of feasibility studies of a project, and from this data the rock mechanics engineer would like to make some quantitative estimates of rock mass cohesive strength. While judgement and experience will usually play a paramount role at this stage, simple tools for estimating rock mass cohesive strength would be an asset. In this paper, an approximate technique is suggested for assessing the cohesive strength of a randomly jointed rock mass from borehole data on fracture intensity and intact rock strength.

I have thought it well to lay before the Institute some account of the Vallecillo Mines, now, I believe, the only paying ones in American hands in northeastern Mexico, including the States of Nuevo Leon, Coahuila and Tamaulipas. The authentic history of these mines dates from their ownership by an American Company in the year 1851, when they were bought by the Vallecillo Silver Mining Company of New York. They had been worked before by the Spaniards, but had been abandoned for many years, on account of the heavy expense of drainage and the constant incursions of the Indians. The company commenced work with several well-known New York capitalists among its stockholders, and had a large fund of both money and enthusiasm. The first point of attack was at a shaft on a mine known as the Jesus Maria, which had the most favorable traditions. Extensive buildings were put up, and two sets of pumps were successively tried. After the second pump, with a steam-cylinder 5 feet in diameter and 10 feet stroke and a plunger 20 inches in diameter, had failed to do more than hold the water, with infinite labor, at the 250 feet level, and after a thorough exploitation of the whole mine above that level had failed to yield more than some $30,000 worth of ore, it was resolved to abandon the effort. Dimension stone is considered by many the premium material for beauty and durability in institutional and monumental construction. Nonetheless in the United States it commands an ever decreasing share of the total market. At the beginning of the century dimension stone accounted for more than half the stone produced in the United States, but by 1974 it accounted for little more than 0.2% and the number of producing quarries and finishing plants had greatly reduced. This decrease in use is accounted for in part by competition from cheaper materials, but another factor seems to be the demand by many designers for uniformity and exact repetition of modular units in construction. Even where stone is used in large buildings modem architects want blandness of pattern and uniformity of color in the stone. Because most natural stone contains variations in color and pattern great strain is put on the quarriers to overcome this and produce a uniform product. This results in increased costs, increased waste at the quarries, and consequently increased price in the market. In spite of this, stone is still looked on as the most prestigious of building materials and its aesthetic appeal is born out by the many simulated stone patterns found in synthetic materials. End Use and Specifications The principal uses of dimension stone are in building construction and monuments. Other uses include flagging, curbing, paving, mill-stock slate, roofing slate, laboratory furniture, and refractory brick. Because many of these uses overlap, an orderly classification of dimension stone uses is most difficult. Various classifications have been used by Cumer (1960), Barton (1968), the U.S. Bureau of Mines yearbooks, and the Building Stone Institute (Anon., 1972).

Gouverneur Talc produces a dry mineral filler from the tremolite talc rocks located near Gouverneur, New York. The raw material for this rock powder is a silicate rock and dust is controlled by water sprays whenever it becomes a problem underground. In the milling operation, there are some nine baghouse-type dust collectors which are utilized for the control of dust created in the crushing and grinding process. These collectors have been installed over a period of years since 1947 and are assigned to specific areas where the particle sizing of the dust can be returned to the plant circuit or product involved at the point of collection. It has been found very advantageous to mount most of these collectors on the top of the mill building and packhouses where the return of the dust can be accomplished by a gravity feed. In the years of effort involved in efficient control of dust generated in the plant, many things have been learned in the construction of ducts for control valves. The company has found useful such things as grasshopper legs for interconnecting silos with similar products, the elimination of fiat dust ducts, cleaning cyclones for coarse dust or heavy loadings, refractory linings for cyclones and certain duct areas, and the avoidance of square intersections when diverting or combining ducts. Operating cost records indicate that collectors handling the finest dust have the least expense. Operating costs on high-temperature dusts generally run higher than other types of material collected. Experience further indicates that the multiple cyclone-type collectors can provide a low cost and efficient way of removing hot dusts from process air streams before the introduction of the material into a baghouse. High moisture conditions and cold northern climates have been found to combine and create conditions under which baghouses can not efficiently function as dust collectors. Gouverneur Talc feels that its several dust collection systems have been a considerable maintenance expense but well worth the cost when it came to safeguarding the employees' health and preventing air pollution.

The design of a tailings dam is a geotechnical engineering project of considerable scope. For the design, it is necessary to establish the engineering properties of the soil or rock strata which will support the dam and the tailings or other fill which will be used to construct the dam. The various field and laboratory investigations which are necessary to obtain the required design parameters are discussed in the paper and the use of these parameters to compute stability, settlement, and seepage are considered. The designer of a tailings dam can never assume an absolute knowledge of the properties of the foundation strata. Further, initial design assumptions are often approximate, particularly with regard to the distribution of pore pressures through and beneath the dam. Thus, the installation of performance monitoring instruments is recommended, since data obtained from such instrumentation can be used to check the stability of the structure both during construction and after its completion.

AMAX Base Metals R&D, Inc. has developed technology for extracting and recovering platinum and palladium from spent automobile exhaust emission control catalyst. Our most promising route is a chloride-based hydrometallurgical flowsheet in which catalyst pellets or crushed monoliths are leached in HC1 with an oxidant at 95°C without agitation. Alumina co-dissolution can be limited by thermal pre-treatment of the catalyst. The leach solutions are treated by one of several precious metals recovery techniques to produce a high grade PGM concentrate. For the new generation of three-way catalytic converters which contain rhodium, an H2S04 preleach could selectively extract much of the rhodium while leaving the platinum and palladium behind. Capital and operating costs will be discussed.

THE lack of a continuous operating balance in petroleum refining, which is analyzed in this paper, is by no means a feature solely of this division of the oil industry. Serious disequilibria of a capital as well as an operating nature exist both in the producing and marketing departments, while problems in the former and to some degree the latter are complicated by political involvements. Attention has previously been directed to the unstabilizing influence of present proration formulas in stimulating unnec-essary drilling.1 While equilibrium in petroleum refining operations has been fairly well maintained in the past decade, examination of departures may prove fruitful. Economic analysis is the application of time and motion study to the functioning of management, rather than labor. Properly applied it may reveal changes in policies that would increase the utility of the properties and facilities of the industry for stockholders, employees and the public, while contributing a stabilizing influence to the general economy. The study of economic equilibrium is essentially one of measurement and interpretation, requiring adequate data and the development of a tech-nique of analysis that employs statistical and mathematical methods as a supplement to the broad descriptive phase of economics. Economic equilibrium in petroleum refining is a dual concept. It embraces both the over-all balance between total storage and total demand for major products and the internal balance between the demands and inventories of the various products. The latter is the more complex of the two for it is concerned with proportionating the supplies of the several products stemming from the joint source to the demands for the individual products which are subject to wide variations. All the products are essentially nondurable goods, and they are used both by producers and consumers but in varying proportions. Motor fuel is very largely a consumer's good, while residual fuel oil is almost entirely a producer's good, the other products falling between these extremes. The peculiar-

Very useful general relationships between operating parameters and the operating results for open- and closed-circuit grinding under steady- state conditions are described. The basic idea of the developed methods consists of the introduction of a known reference state. The relations derived from very simple approximations to individual processes allow one to evaluate fineness and mass flow of the desired state after changing the parameters (feed rate, fineness of the feed material, mill length, transport behavior through the mill, classifier characteristics). It was also possible to derive some general relationships, e.g., * an equation for the influence of the operating parameters of the mill on the fineness of the mill output * a criterion to establish if the desired state of a closed grinding circuit is steady state at all * a possibility to substitute the common influence of the transport behavior of the mill and of the classifier by-pass fraction with the coarse stream on the mill outlet product by means of a fictitious worse transport behavior. The applicability of the described methodology to many problems in grinding practice, including questions of controlling grinding circuits, is demonstrated by some examples. In particular, a working diagram of the standard closed grinding circuit has been established.

A high-pressure wellhead lubricator has been developed to facilitate telemetering electrical measurements from subsurface reservoirs to the surface with the well under normal flowing conditions. The field unit in use at the present time employs a 5/16-in diameter, single-conductor armored cable and is to be used in wells with surface pressures up to 5,000 psi. It has a pressure sealing element that maintains a continuous and absolute seal around the cable as it enters or leaves the tubing at speeds up to 175 ft per minute. A cable injecting device is used which obviates sinker bars or weight sections on the instrument. INTRODUCTION The development of instruments for securing physical measurements in pressure wells has been confined in the past to those instrument which would operate on a wire line and record the necessary measurements in the downhole instrument itself, or those which would operate on an electric cable in a well with the surface pressure killed by the use of weighted fluids or by the use of tubing plugs. In one case the accuracy of the measurements is questionable, and in the other the range of application is very limited. Considerable work has been done by other interests to provide effective means to accomplish the necessary telemetering. The U. S. Bureau of Mines developed a wellhead lubricator prior to 1947 which permitted a 5/16-in diameter single-conductor cable to be lowered into a well with a surface pressure of approximately 500 psi. This unit was used successfully in a number of tests in Oklahoma. A company which tests wells has recently offered on a service basis a wellhead lubricator with a 3/16-in diameter cable that reportedly operates up to 2,500 psi surface pressures. Each of the above operates on a staging principle to effect a seal. In both of these units some leakage of well fluid occurs when the cable is moved. SPECIFICATIONS FOR DESIGN In order to provide the maximum flexibility in its use, the following parameters were established for the design of our high-pressure wellhead lubricator: L An absolute well fluid seal up to 5,000 psi surface pressures. 2. Means for raising and lowering the instrument at speeds of at least 100 ft per minute. 3. Provision for the instrument to enter and leave the well without disturbing the well flow or the reservoir conditions. 4. A cable large enough to provide suitable electrical characteristics and suitable mechanical properties. 5. A method of operation that will not damage the well in any way. The present high-pressure wellhead lubricator field unit fulfills the above requirements. DESCRIPTION OF THE UNIT AND ITS OPERATION The cable selected for this use is the standard Amergraph 1H2 as manufactured by the American Steel and Wire Co. This particular cable is normally used by the Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Co. in their conventional well logging operations. Although the cable presents a noncircular cross-section (Fig. l), its diameter is very consistent; lor example, maximum diameter is 0.325 in., minimum diameter 0.314 in. This [actor permits the use of the sealing element, as later described. Early in the development of the high-pressure wellhead lubricator it was apparent that we could not effect a direct gas seal around a moving 1H2 cable. This becomes evident when an examination of the cable cross-section is made. THE observations presented in this paper were recorded during a study of the spheroidizing process. Spheroidization of cementite in steel is either brought about to develop a set of desirable mechanical properties or is an incidental result of mechanical and heat-treating manipulations. Physical properties of steel are materially influenced by the state of the cementite. Conversion of cementite from the lamellar to the spheroidal state is usually accom-panied by a decrease of hardness and of strength and by an increase in ductility. The spheroidized structure is usually considered as an ultimate step in the process of the softening of steel. The unorthodox hardening of a 3.5 per cent Ni steel (SAE No. 2330) after a heat-treatment that previously proved entirely suitable for a complete spheroidization of cementite in carbon steels led to the observa-tions that constitute the subject of the present paper.

SPODUMENE is a lithium-bearing pyroxene, and is an important source of lithium compounds. Because of its high alumina and lithia content it might be a desirable constituent of glass batches. The use of spodu-mene in ceramics will undoubtedly increase, as it has been shown that a mixture of the proper proportions of this mineral with soda feldspar and potash feldspar has a much lower maturing temperature upon firing than has any one of the three components.1 The mineral spodumene seldom occurs as pure mineral, but ordinarily with feldspars, mica and quartz. All spodumene-bearing rocks tested contained these minerals as gangue. Small amounts of iron and manga-nese oxides also were present, usually as stains on the silicate grains. Mica associated with the spodumene carried a considerable amount of lithia. This was discovered in flotation tailings, which, although virtually free of spodumene grains when examined microscopically, showed 0.4 to 0.5 per cent Li20 on chemical analysis. The lithia content of micas picked from the North Carolina spodumene rock was variable. Some samples contained little lithia, others more than 3 per cent. In 1938, under the supervision of Oliver C. Ralston, ? the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, undertook to study the beneficiation of North Carolina spodumene by froth flotation. The Bureau had previously published investigations on the beneficiation of spodumene.2,3 The methods described in the second publication' did not give good results with badly weathered spodumene rock, so that more thorough investigation of the subject was warranted.

In a previous communication by one of us,1 a theory of inverse segregation was presented by which the maximum segregation and segregation distribution throughout a unidirectionally solidified, binary-alloy ingot could be calculated. The theory, which is based on the mechanism of volume contraction and interdendritic flow, quantitatively accounts for the observed maximum segregation in the A1 (rich)-CU' and Al-Zn2 alloy systems, and for the segregation distribution along the ingot lengths for the A1-Cu system.''4 One of the drawbacks to a more extensive use of the segregation equations is their complexity, particularly for the calculation of the segregation distribution throughout the length of the ingot, involving long tedious numerical calculations to obtain the segregation. Computer pro- grams, written in Fortran II for use on an IBM 1620 computer, have been developed by the authors (and are available from them), providing quick and accurate methods for the determination of the theoretical maximum segregation in any binary-alloy system, and also for the segregation distribution in any unidirectionally solidified binary-alloy ingot. The segregation distribution is controlled by the lengths of the various solidification zones'74 which are in turn controlled by the cooling rate, and are determined from temperature-distribution curves obtained during solidification. The theoretical segregation distributions shown in Fig. 1 illustrate the effect of the zone lengths on the distribution Curve 1, indicative of a slowly cooled ingot, represents an ingot having long solidification zones, while Curve 2, indicative of a rapidly cooled ingot, represents an ingot having relatively short zones. Although these distributions are calculated for an A1-10 pct Cu ingot, the shape of the distribution would be similar for any binary-alloy ingot. These curves show clearly why early workers obtained results which indicated that the maximum (chill-face) segregation approached zero at very fast cooling rates.3 Actually, the maximum segregation is independent of cooling rate,' but even at short distances from the chill face the amount of segregation drops considerably, particularly in a rapidly cooled ingot, making it very difficult to establish the amount of segregation occurring at the chill-face. THE ever increasing array of information concerning the measurement of the effect of the welding process on the properties of a steel is an indication of the tremendous effort that is being expended in this field. The methods that have been considered may be divided into two groups: first, those that measure directly the effect of welding on the ductility of a steel, and, second, those that observe the change in some property, such as the hardness of the heat-affected zone, and assume a direct correlation between this change and the resultant ductility. The nick-bend test is a direct method designed for studying the effect of welding on the ductility of a steel. The test specimen (Fig. I) consists of a bar cut from a plate with a bead weld on the surface. The specimen is prepared with a saw-notch placed so as to restrict deformation to the heat-affected zone under the bead weld when tested as a static bend. Failure is caused by rupture of the low-ductility metal in the heat-affected zone. The angle at maximum load is used as an index of the effect of the welding process on the material. In the development of the nick-bend test considerable scatter was noted in some of the results, although the agreement of duplicate specimens welded at the same time and tested consecutively was excellent. Upon further investigation it was found that the change in ductility was dependent upon the interval of time between the welding operation and the testing of the specimen. For the six steels of Fig. a, the angle at maximum load in four cases was doubled and in one case was tripled. All steels that have been studied show an improvement in the angle of bend for longer intervals between welding and testing. It is well known that different forms of carbon show differences in chemical behavior under apparently identical conditions. It is fairly well known that these differences persist, although to a lesser degree, in a single group of carbons, such as the anthracites of Pennsylvania. It is the purpose of this paper to show the extent of these variations for Pennsylvania anthracites from actual quantitative measurements of the amount of carbon dioxide reduced under the standardized test conditions employed. As the amount of carbon dioxide reduced to the monoxide (under comparative conditions termed, for convenience, the "reactivity") is important in combustion, gas production and metallurgy, it is hoped that this paper will be a useful contribution to the store of knowledge on these subjects. In carrying out the investigation, considerable time and thought were spent in obtaining what seemed to be the best possible design of apparatus. The next step consisted in making a number of trial runs on the same sample, varying temperature, particle diameter, etc. and then outlining a standardized procedure to be followed in testing all samples. Fifty anthracites were tested. As a matter of interest, some 10 miscellaneous samples were also tested. The data show initial reaction temperatures (abbreviated I.R.T.), reaction velocity constants at 900" and 950" C., some effects of added substances, and a few additional tests designed to throw some light on the causes of differences in reactivity. The sample of charcoal, as was anticipated, proved to be easily the most reactive of any sample tested. The anthracites as a group came second. The five samples of gas and by-product cokes, obtained from five different coke manufacturers, came third, and a single sample of Rhode Island anthracite ranked fourth, with respect to reactivity as above defined. Although the five coke samples do not necessarily represent the average market coke, and five samples constitute a rather small number of samples to serve as a basis for comparisons, the fact that none

Any information that will increase the accuracy of our knowledge of the conditions prevailing in petroleum reservoirs should be of direct value in the determination of the proper operating technique as well as in the estimation of reserves and of ultimate production. The obvious method of obtaining this information is by studying a sample of the reservoir rock and its contents. In any such study, the problem of primary importance and maximum difficulty is that of getting the core to the surface in such a manner that its original fluid content is undisturbed, which has so far proved to be an impossible task. Though it might be rash to say this will never be done, it is certainly safe to assume that a, method for the recovery of a core at the surface in its undisturbed original state may not be developed in the immediate future, and certainly will not be forthcoming without a great deal of costly experimentation. Therefore any information that may be obtained that will help to correlate the state of a core (its fluid saturation) at the surface with its condition at the time it was drilled should be of value to the petroleum industry. The experiments described in this paper were undertaken with the purpose of determining, if possible, any relationship that might exist between the saturation of a core at the surface and its original fluid content. No consideration has been given to the question of contamination by penetration of drilling water, since this problem has been extensively studied by other investigators.1-3 Furthermore, it was regarded as outside the scope of these experiments, which were concerned only with the effect of pressure reduction upon the liquid content of cores. In an experimental study of this sort involving a large number of variables, accurate control of all factors is very important. The essential and obvious procedure is to vary systematically one factor or condition while keeping all the others constant, which necessarily involves a rather protracted and sometimes tedious experimental program. Locality and Geological Occurrence. The Alpine region of Southwest Colorado, comprising the San Juan and Uncompaghre Mountains, is composed of a deeply eroded sheet of acid eruptive rocks, overlying in part gneissic sehists, and in part limestones and sandstones, including portions of the Silurian, Devonian, and Carboniferous systems. The section is clearly and beautifully exposed along the Uncompaghre River from its headwaters to its exit from the mountains. The river's course from the town of Ouray towards the Los Pinos agency is due north, and four miles from Ouray, in this direction, the Uncompaghre receives from the east the Red Cafion Creek. Following up the narrow caftan we find the section through white.. sandstone in strata dipping to the north and west, and belonging either to the lower or middle Devonian system. Presently the steep cafion-liko character of the ravine gives place to more gentle slopes, and we have entered crystalline rock-porphyry. The contact is well marked, for the sandstone, to a depth of from six to ten feet, resembles quartzite, i. e., is semifused. Ascending still higher, a small

A FORMER paper1 described in detail various methods of calculating coal analyses to obtain the composition and calorific value of the pure coal substance-that is, of the coal free from its mineral matter. The paper included a table showing calorific values of pure coal, as calculated from float-and-sink portions, by means of the Parr formula for "unit coal" and by the customary moisture-free and ash-free formula. A modification of the Parr formula was proposed, based on the assumption that one-half the sulfur present in coal occurs as pyritic sulfur and one-half as organic sulfur. In the published discussion of the paper Cady gave a table of results on a large number of Illinois coals as obtained by the Parr formula and the proposed modification thereof. The results obtained by Cady indicate that the Parr formula applies better to Illinois coals than does the modified formula proposed by Fieldner and Selvig. The present paper gives results obtained by applying the modified Parr formula to the analyses of the float-and-sink portions of the coals shown in the former paper, and results obtained by applying the Parr formula, the modified Parr formula, and the simple moisture-free and ash-free formula to various coals of the United States ranging in sulfur content from less than 1 per cent to more than 4 per cent sulfur. A graphic method of estimating the calorific value of pure coal and determin-ing the relation of the coal ash to the mineral matter of coal, as proposed by Stansfield and Sutherland,2 was applied to a number of coals, and the results are given herein.

MUCH of White Pine's success is due to the mechanization of mining operations and the development of an efficient beneficiation process to extract usable copper from the low-grade ore (averaging slightly more than 1 pct copper content). When the mine was first opened, all ore was trucked to a conveyor system installed in the slope leading out of the mine. But as new mining areas have been opened up at increasing distances from the slope, conveyors have replaced the trucks for much of the haulage. This conveyor program is expected to continue as mining progresses. Here is how the present underground system functions: Run-of-mine ore is dumped into two truck hoppers and withdrawn from the bottom of each hopper by a 60-in. apron feeder 22 ft long (see diagram). Collecting conveyors 54 in. wide and 44 ft long receive the material from the apron feeders and discharge to two main-line 54-in. conveyors, one 2000 ft and the other 2600 ft long. Operating at 312 fpm and handling 1200 tph, the main-line conveyors converge near the bottom of the tunnel leading out of the mine and discharge into two 72x168-in. Vibrex screens. Ore under 8 in. goes directly to the bin beneath. The oversize is fed to two 32x40-in. jaw crushers and after crushing joins the 8-in. material in the bin.
