Single-crystal Gap lms been epitaxially grow from the vapor phase at a rate oJ 3 p per nzin without encountering a7Zy low-ang-le grain boundaries or debwading- the electrical properties of the material. This growth rate exceeds any value previol~sly reported for the vapor phase growth of Gap. In pure material, mObilities ns high as 175 sq cm per U-sec at room tenzperature and 1450 sq cm per v-sec at 77°K have been obtained. These values are anLong the highest that have been attai)led for this material. For the first time, Gap possesses a number of important properties which make it well-suited for use in electro-optic modulators. First, the transverse electro-optic effect is operable in this material, which makes it possible to increase the path length of the modulated iron doping of Gap has been achieved; this results i?z resistivities of approximately 10" ohm-cm. The problelrls of residual strain and isolated shorting paths in these crystals have been partially solved. Electro-optic modulation of visible radiation has been demonstrated with this material. It is anticipated that further improvement with regard to the probleins of strain and shorting paths will result in a practical Gap electro-optic modulator. radiation without increasing the applied voltage. In addition, this permits the use of thin crystals so that relatively small voltages are needed to provide the requisite high electric fields. The use: of a pilot waterflood is very desirable where all of the pertinent data necessary to initiate a full scale waterflood are not. available. This paper attempts to take a specific case and .show the step by step process of starting with a pilot waterflood and progressing to a full wale flood as results are obtained. INTRODUCTION Many of the older fields of Soutlwest Texas are approaching depletion by primary produrtion methods. As primary protlllc:inp operations on individual properties approach their economic limit. conflicting considerations face management: cm the one hand. plugging and abandonment of wells for equipment salvage; on the other hand, further investment in secondary recovery installtions, equilent, and well workovers in the interests of conservation anal additional oil reserves. In main instances, where primary production by pressure depletion and gas solution drive has been comparatively good, there still exists the possibility of an economic secondary recovery by waterflood. This is not necessarily true to the same degrre of all such fields. nor all portions of large fields. To properly evaluate the economics of a prospective water-11ot1cI requires a considerable amount of precise geological. statitical. and physical data Such information on the older field.; is often very limited. and in the case of the property discussed in this paper was considered inadequate to justify investment in an overall waterflood. Primary production was estimated at :39 per cent of the original oil in place, yet sand conditions of permeability and homogeneity, and position in the field appeared to be favorable for a limited margin of profit from a carefully controlled waterflood. Thus a pilot waterflood, with its minimum initial financial risk, followed by extension as favorable results were obtained, seemed to be the answer for the Sun Oil Co L. Wiederkehr lease in the Nortl Government Wells Field, Duval County. Texas DESCRIPTION OF RESERVOIR Approxinately 8,200 wells have been drilled in Duval County. As of March 1, 1952, there were 3,350 producing oil wells in 92 different fields, with very few flowing wells (Fig. 1.) Sun Oil Co. operates the I.. Wiederkehr lease located in the North Government Wells Field in Duval Countv. 85 mile. west of Corpus Chriti and 100 miles south of San Antonio. The lease has been subjected in part to a controlled five spot waterflood. The North Government Wells Field is roughly 7 miles long and 3 miles wide, with numerous overlapping producing zones. The L. Wiederkehr lease of 3.085 acres. Has seven producing zones from 700 to 7.500 ft. The lease is in the northern section of the field where it is widest, and has 710 acres productive from the North Government Wells .and. (Fig. 2.) The North Government Wells sand, Jackson group. Eocene age, at an average depth of 2.250 ft (minus 1.750 subsea). has a thickness range of 25 ft on the east side of the L. Wiederkehr lease to 4 ft on the west side. It has a slight overall dip to the North and East of some 33 ft to the mile.

KNOWLEDGE of the isothermal transformation behavior and the TTT chart method of graphically summarizing such information has been of invaluable aid to the ferrous metallurgist in understanding and developing heat treatments intended to provide specific mechanical properties. It is to be expected that similar lines of study directed to titanium-base alloys will be as profitable. This paper summarizes, on conventional TTT charts, the isothermal transformation products and pertinent reaction rate data for binary alloys of titanium containing 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 pct Mo, respectively. The results so presented were derived from metal-lographic examination. Some X-ray diffraction work was done to clarify certain points of question. Ti-Mo System To the authors' k.nowledge, TTT charts have only been used to describe the reaction rates of eutectoidal decompositions. It would seem that the kinetics of decomposition of any unstable solid solution might be conveniently described in this manner. The equilibrium diagram of the Ti-Mo system' is shown in Fig. 1. The similarity with the Fe-Ni system will be recognized. Additions of molybdenum serve to stabilize the /3 phase to increasingly lower temperatures. The solubility of molybdenum in the a phase is restricted to less than 1 pct at 600°C. Under normal conditions. a homogeneous ,8 structure quenched to a, temperature in the a f & field will reject a of invariant composition. The rate at which this occurs depends on the degree of undercooling and the degree of supersaturation of /3. The structural character of the rejected phase may also be expected to be related to the undercooling. Materials and Experimental Methods A sponge titanium was used which has a nominal impurity content as reported in Table I. The nominal composition of the molybdenum used is also included. The alloys were prepared in 150 g melts by arc melting in an evacuated water-cooled copper crucible of the type reported in an earlier paper.' The pancake-type ingots were forged to 1/4x1/4 in. bars and homogenized for 24 hr at 1000°C in evacuated Vycor bulbs. Specimens Vi in. thick were cut from these bars for heat treatment. The heat treatment cycles followed an invariant procedure. The specimens were soaked at 1000°C for 20 min under a helium protective atmosphere prior to quenching into a lead bath held at a temperature corresponding to a chosen degree of undercooling. After a prescribed period of time at this temperature, the specimen was removed and water quenched. A series of specimens so treated for progressively longer periods served to establish the times for initiation and completion of the decomposition of the /3 phase at a particular temperature. Although heat treatment of unprotected specimens in a lead bath does permit surface contamination by lead diffusion, this method is necessary to insure sufficiently rapid quenching rates. As long as the bath treatments were of less than 1 hr duration. the contaminated surface was not unduly deep and could be removed without excessive grinding. Metal-lographically, the contaminated zone could be readily distinguished from the pure binary alloy. Transformation Characteristics of Ti-Mo Alloys Metallographic examination showed that a supersaturated p phase may decompose by one of two processes. The past 15 years have seen rapid advances in the metallurgy of materials for drill machinery and bits, but rock drilling itself continues to be largely an art. Jet piercing, roller bit rotary drilling, and rotary percussion are all promising new techniques, but the percussion rock drill, still used for 90 pct of the blastholes in U. S. hard-rock mining, has undergone no major modification since pneumatic machines were first used successfully in the 1860's. This singular lack of progress stems directly from ignorance of the nature of impact failure of rock and the fundamentals of rock penetration in general. For nearly three-quarters of a century, mining engineers did not know what went on at the bottom of a drillhole. More and more, in recent years, investigators in the field have come to realize that to understand percussion drilling they must study the basic action of percussion bits penetrating rock—not the per- formances of commercial rock drills, with their many attendant variables that cannot be isolated or controlled. Using a vertical drop tester, the writer investigated the sequence of rock failure under the impact. of a simple, chisel-shaped bit when changes were made, singly, in significant variables. Results of this and other research are reported here. BASIC CONCEPTS The formation of a crater in rock under the impact blow of a bit can be observed experimentally. Directly beneath the edge of the bit the rock is crushed into fine powder; toward the sides of the crater it chips out into relatively large fragments. An explanation of these phenomena has been offered by Drilling Research Inc. on the basis of work sponsored by this organization at Battelle Memorial Institute (Ref. 1,1954, Summary, pp. 9-18). THE recent installation of a high-pressure propeller type fan at the Moose shaft of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Butte, Mont., is of interest on account of novelty of design and also because an appreciable saving was made over the cost of a reversible centrifugal fan such as is ordinarily used where a high pressure is required. The lower cost is due solely to the fact that by means of controls 'on the power supplied to the three-phase, alternating-current, induction. motor, directly connected to the propeller it is possible to reverse the direction of rotation of the propeller and thus reverse the direction of air flow. The extra air ducts and reversing doors required for this purpose with centrifugal fans are not necessary, and their elimination greatly reduces these construction charges, which form a great part of the total expense. The Badger State mine for which the Moose shaft is used as the main outlet air course is now being-developed to the 4100-ft. level. The old centrifugal fan, formerly used at the collar of the shaft, was installed 15 years ago at a time when most of the stoping was being done above the 2400-ft. level, and when the temperature of the rock was much lower than it is now on the bottom levels recently opened. The old fan, therefore, became inadequate to maintain desirable ventilation conditions, on account of the increase in resistance to air flow incident to the greater depth of the mine workings and because a much larger volume of air is required to offset the higher rock temperatures. Propeller, or disk, fans commonly used in the ventilation of mines are not suited to high-pressure work, but economies in the cost of their installation have long been recognized. In South Africa use has been made of a number of propellers placed in series along a common shaft, the number of propellers used being varied with requirements for meeting different conditions of mine resistance, but the mechanical efficiency is described as being low. In Butte, experimental work was done by the writer along similar lines under somewhat different conditions, but with poor results as to both pressure capacity and mechanical efficiency. Tests were also made of two different types of propeller fans of moderate size, which were said by the manufacturers to be suited to high-pressure mine ventilation.

About six years ago the writer had occasion to visit a large magnetic iron-ore concentrating-plant, and then saw for the first time rubber belts employed for conveying-purposes. These belts were from 20 inches to 30 inches in width, and some of them were as long as 500 feet between centers. When I spoke of the enormous amount of material they handled with a small expenditure of power, the superintendent assented, but at the same time complained that although he bought the best quality of belts, the abrasion of the ore wore them out very rapidly, causing continually very large bills for repairs and renewals. This study of the relationship of the accumulation and drainage of oil to the structural conditions in the Wilmington oil field is presented with the hope that the data contained herein will aid in efficient exploita-tion of other fields where similar conditions exist. A number of Cu-SiO, and Cu-A1203 alloys of low oxide content, produced by internal oxidation of copper-silicon and copper-aluminum dilute solid solutions, were exposed at temperatures up to 1050°C for fairly long times to bring about partial or total re crystallization. The creep-rupture properties of these re crystallized alloys were compared to those in the as-extruded condition at 450° C. Some of the alloys were cold worked after re crystallization to note changes in creep-rupture properties, also at 450OC. SINCE the introduction of the SAP alloy in 1949,~ many studies have been carried out on similar oxide and intermetallic dispersion hardened alloys to determine properties and to establish the mechanisms involved in the strengthening process which led to stable, high-temperature behavior.'-' To date, it has been indicated that, however achieved, the structure should be composed of a continuous ductile metal matrix in which is dispersed a fine, submicron size, hard, insoluble second phase (or at least, essentially insoluble at temperatures very near the melting point), with a submicron or near submicron interparticle spacing. Stored energy, obtained by a high strain rate deformation process appears desirable, as an additional strengthening means beyond pure dispersion.=

PHYSICAL metallurgists interested in the alloying behavior and phase transformations in rare-earth metals and alloys require a strain-free polished and etched surface for both metallographic and X-ray examination. However, the rare earths have presented a problem in this respect since they are difficult to polish free from strain and are very reactive to the atmosphere. Their tendency to oxidize readily even at room temperature necessitates careful preparation and rather elaborate protection if their surface is to be examined for any length of time. The "light" lan-thanides (i .e., atomic numbers less than 63), especially lanthanum and cerium, are particularly bad in this regard; they oxidize very rapidly at room temperature. To eliminate the problem of plastic deformation remaining on the surface after mechanical polishing, electropolishingl and chemical polishing techniques2 have been developed. The electropolishing technique requires the specimen to be immersed in an electrolyte at -77°C and thus obviates a metallographic study of, for example, the fcc —double-hexagonal close-packed (dhcp) transformation in cerium which begins at -10°C. The chemical polishing solution has been used only on several of the "heavy" rare-earth metals. However, a convenient method for protecting the polished and etched surfaces from atmospheric corrosion has not been available. Our interest in the superconducting properties of lanthanum, and in the phase transformations in lanthanum and cerium, has led us to develop a technique for the metallographic preparation of lanthanum and cerium which clearly reveals the microstructure and preserves the etched surface for days. The specimens are chemically polished and anodized. The chemical polishing is performed at room temperature, the anodic oxide film provides the required protection from the atmosphere, and colors produced in the film provide a simple positive technique for phase identification. Lanthanum and cerium metal ingots obtained from Johnson Matthey and Co., Ltd., were remelted to suitable shapes and heat-treated to produce various microstructures. This truly remarkable machine was built on a preliminary scale in May, 1895. The first full-sized table was built by Mr. A. R. Wilfley, and was used in his own mill in Kokomo Colo., in May, 1896. The first table sold for installation was placed in the Puzzle mill, Breckinridge, Summit county, Colo., in August, 1896. The mill enthusiasts at first hailed it as the cure for all the ills that flesh is heir to in the milling line. A little later it was found to make losses which were serious, and on this account the table succeeded only to a limited extent in displacing the vanners of the gold-mills. Still later, mill-men in a number of districts throughout the country made special studies of the faults of the machine, and devised a number of ways of grouping supplementary machines to overcome as far as possible the losses, and at the same time retain the benefit of the extraordinarily large capacity accompanied by the production of clean concentrates for which the machine has become so justly famous. I hope to make an exhibit of some of these methods in an appendix to my book on ore-dressing which is now in preparation. These experimenters have not written up the subject, and if they possess all the facts they have not given them out for the benefit of the mining profession at large. The object of this paper is to obtain the facts and to present them so clearly that their bearing can be seen by all. To this end two complete series of tests have been planned. One (the present paper), to study concentration of galena in presence of quartz; the other (to follow shortly), to study concentration of chalcopyrite in presence of quartz. Changes in coke hardness affect the working of the blast furnace, for soft coke is an obstacle to proper furnace operation. Soft coke is due to a low hydrogen-oxygen ratio in the coal charged; increasing this ratio increases the hardness of the coke. The best means of determining the hardness of coke is the combined tumbler and ball-mill. What is Good Coke? It is not always appreciated that the correct answer may be such a reliable forecast to the physical condition of the blast furnace, and incidentally its entire operation, that among the ordinary variations in other raw materials and also in operating conditions, it assumes a position of primary significance. Inasmuch as coke forms two-thirds of the total bulk of material charged, this assertion will not seem exaggerated, and in the subsequent discussion its applicability will be presented. Coke is the ideal blast-furnace fuel because it is strong and hard enough to resist the crushing and grinding effects of the furnace burden, and its porosity allows the ready passage of gas upward through the charge, and rapid combustion before the tuyeres. Coke deprived of its strength and with a cell structure physically frail and chemically susceptible to solution by carbon dioxide has its chief asset eliminated. When the melting zones are approached the fluid cinder trickling toward the hearth will envelope the small pieces of coke and form a sticky mass that will retard the free passage of gas. Blast pressure will then rise, driving will slow up and fragments of coke will lie inert before the tuyeres, rendered practically incombustible by their slaggy envelop. It is believed also that coke messes at cast are attributable to quantities of such coke floating unburned in the hearth. Energy conservation has been the keyword in many plant expansions. Far many years, most of the phosphate industry has been dry grinding their phosphate rock. Agrico Chemical in Florida has recently been evaluating the wet grinding of phosphate rock, a process which eliminates a pre-dry stage for mill feed while allowing higher through- puts. This same company also plans to open a new phosphate facility in Louisiana that will use wet grinding in both ball mills. The Eveleth Expansion Co.'s Fairlane concentrator will have the largest rod and ball mills in the US mining industry. The plant will consist of three lines, each with one rod mill and one ball mill, and will process 464 ltph. The rod mills will be 15 x 20% ft, drawing 2035 hp. The ball mills will be 17 x 41½ ft, drawing 6900 hp and driven by dual 3000- hp motors. The plant is scheduled for startup in the fall of 1976.

The need for a practical method of deciding upon new alloy steel analyses to widen its markets was the problem facing the Chrome Steel Works at the beginning of 1927. In addition to determining the physical properties of the alloys under consideration, it was necessary to test their value in service. Small melts of steel in a crucible, from which test specimens could be made, were insufficient to determine more than physical properties, therefore actual castings and ingots had to be made before the products could be placed in service. Furthermore, to save further experimental work, it was desirable that these heats should be made on a "pilot" basis; that is, actually duplicating regular open-hearth furnace practice. Therefore a one-ton (2000-lb.) acid open-hearth furnace was built. Furnace Design There are no special features in the design of this furnace. Standard acid open-hearth practice is followed, with the reproportioning of the dimensions necessitated by its small size; notably, a considerably increased length in proportion to width in order to get proper flame propagation. After the first heat was made it was found that the check-ers were insufficient. The checker chambers were increased in size and the checker openings were made much smaller. The furnace was started late in March, 1927, and made 65 heats. Experimental work was then stopped unti1, the data accumulated could be worked up and summarized. The run was resumed in November and the furnace is still operating, having made at this writing 60 additional heats. For the last series of runs, there was some rebuilding of both the furnace itself and the checkers. Slag pockets were added. Fig. 1 shows details of construction; Fig. 2, the general appearance. All designing was done by the operating and engineering staff. Construction materials were those available around the plant. The reversing valve is a standard butterfly type taken from an old furnace. The slag pockets and checkers are cleaned by digging down to arched openings which have been bricked up.

INTRODUCTION The tax structure of foreign mining investment into the United States has a significant impact on the financing and the profitability of the operation. For these reasons, it is critical for the foreign investor to develop and implement a well planned tax strategy that will enable its venture to: (1) reduce its U.S. income tax liability (2) lower U.S. withholding taxes when funds are transferred from the United States, and (3) decrease or defer home country taxation on its U.S. earnings ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF INVESTMENT A threshold business and tax consideration is the form in which the investment is to be made. The most common alternatives include: forming or acquiring a U.S. mining corporation, directly establishing a branch mining operation, or entering into a joint venture or partnership with a U.S. mining company. U.S. Corporations The most common structure through which foreign mining companies engage in business in the United States is to form a U.S. mining corporation. Forming a U.S. Corporation. If the investor decides to establish a new U.S. corporation the organization is relatively simple. No distinctions are made in the United States between "public" and "private" forms of incorporation. Minimum share capital is not usually required and share capital may consist of shares with no par value. Since corporate law is the responsibility of the individual states, the foreign investor must choose a state in which to incorporate. If appreciated mining property is transferred to a corporation solely in exchange for stock or securities in that corporation, and the transferors have control of the corporation (defined as at least 80 percent of all voting shares and at least 80 percent of all other shares) immediately after the exchange, no gain or loss will be recognized. However, if the transferors receive cash or other mining properties in addition to stock, any resulting gain may, in certain situations, be taxed to the extent of the cash and the fair market value of other property received. Acquiring an Existing U.S. Corporation. Acquiring an existing U.S. mining corporation is not as straight-forward as forming a corporation. This alternative may be accomplished through either a stock or an asset acquisition. Generally, with a stock acquisition the purchaser inherits all of the business and tax attributes of the former mining corporation. If the investor is able to acquire mining assets, however, the purchaser will usually be able to avoid any unknown or hidden liabilities that could be attached to an existing corporation. Another principal advantage in acquiring assets is that the purchase price may be directly allocated to the acquired mines or other mineral-related assets with the result that the assets' depreciable base may be increased. Assuming the domestic seller and the foreign purchaser can agree, it is generally advisable to allocate the purchase price in the sales agreement to specific individual assets. From the foreign investor's standpoint, it is preferable to allocate the purchase price to depreciable assets such as buildings and equipment versus an allocation to mineral land holdings or intangibles such as goodwill, which are generally not depreciable. THE problem of making a building unit combining the necessary physical and mechanical properties and good thermal insulation has been foremost in the minds of architects and ceramic and construction engineers for many years. This paper presents the results of studies on thermally expanding shales or clays to produce light-weight cellular products suitable for making building units. An expanded clay block suitable for building purposes should be large enough so that substantial savings may be effected in labor costs in laying the wall. The permeability should be low and it should have sufficiently good "dry-wall" characteristics to permit exposing the exterior surface to the elements, and to permit plastering directly the inside wall surface. The thermal conductivity should be low and the mechanical properties should be adequate. Obviously, a unit possessing satisfactory qualities for constructing an outside wall would be satisfactory for interior walls and for back-up purposes. The results of studies on bloating various shales or clays[t] and the properties of the expanded products are reported. In another paper1 basic factors involved in bloating of clays are discussed. Manufacturers of ceramic products, particularly structural clay, may encounter bloating of the ware during burning, and precautions must be followed to avoid this phenomenon. About 1927 the C. F. Burgess Laboratories, Madison, Wis., while carrying on an investigation for the American Face Brick Research Corporation, conceived the idea of intentionally bloating clay while holding it in a restrained condition, with the hope of producing a unitary cellular mass. Work was carried on until about 1931, when studies were terminated because of business conditions. These studies were continued later by The Western Brick Co., Danville, Ill., which developed a process of "inwardly expansive bloating."2 The major purpose of the latter investigation was to produce back-up tile to compete with concrete blocks made from Haydite or cinder aggregate. Haydite is a light-weight aggregate formed by heating certain clays or shales rapidly in a rotary kiln. While the investigations at the C. F. Burgess Laboratories or at Western Brick Co. were not carried far enough to lead to the commercial production of material for the construction of walls, particularly outside walls, they showed that certain clays could be thermally expanded and that it was possible to produce a material of low permeability with a large percentage of the total voids or cells closed. Commencing in 1939, the Ozark Chemical Co. sponsored a research program at Battelle Memorial Institute for the purpose of determining whether it is technically feasible to make thermally expanded building units, and specifically to get answers to the following questions:

Twenty-seven technical sessions with more than 100 papers covered the gamut of mining advancements. It was a grand display of industry vitality just to power the huge exhibit area required 22,000 kW of electricity each day, and support services for the exposition created more than 1000 daily jobs for local labor. Unquestionably, Las Vagas knew the miners were in town for the American Mining Congress' International Mlining Show.

Kansas, with its thin seams and tough overburden, may not be anyone's first choice for a coal mining operation. But there are operators making it pay through careful attention to mining techniques and aggressive marketing in the local region. One of the few Kansas coal operators is Bill Patch, who has been in the business for 28 years. Beginning with a single dragline operation near his home in Welch, Okla., Bill's Coal Co. weathered some lean times during the "soft" coal market of the 1950's and 1960's. But his tenacity paid off when new markets began opening up, and the company has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years. In 1975, the Fort Scott mine opened in Bourbon County, Kansas; in 1976, the Porter mine began production in Wagoner County, Okla.; in 1977, the Fulton mine opened near Fulton, Kansas. In addition, the original Welch mine in Oklahoma is still a producer, and this year the company will open a new mine at Chetopa, Kansas.

Andre Hubaux: In the writer's opinion, more stress should be put on field and microscope observations, as J. L. Gillson does. His discovery of relics of big labra-dorite feldspars from the Marcy anorthosite in all the other rocks is proof enough that previous field observations have been inadequate. The writer's field experience with anorthositie massifs is limited to the Egersund-Sogndal district in southern Norway; however, this is a very large and well exposed area. It seems to have so many points in common with the Adirondack region that a detailed comparison should be beneficial. This comparison was not possible 20 years ago, owing to the scarcity of geological data, at least for Norway. Both regions are now far better known—the Norway district because of the work of Professors Bugge and Barth 33-35 and especially because of the extensive field and microscopic research of P. Michot,30-35 who introduced me in the field to the problems of that region. In a particular unit of the Egersund district, a sodi-fication of the plagioclase, very similar to what Gillson calls "andesinization," has taken place. 12' The percentage of anorthite in the plagioclase has dropped from 42 to 43 pct in the original norite down to 27 pct, but never below that level. This metasomatical transformation is a part of a whole series of processes of mig-matitization which have produced, above the level of granitization, concentrations of Mg, Fe, and Ti and among them, patches and parallel bands of ilmenite and magnetite. Thus both regions present somewhat comparable features and the theories to explain them have several points in common. However, as there seem to be differences between some American conceptions and the views commonly accepted at the University of Liege, I would like to make some comments about J. L. Gill-son's article. The author speaks of the garnet as being an anti-stress mineral.
