The presence of an extensive soft siltstone layer in the middle of the inter-burden sequence of rocks at Syferfontein Colliery in the Republic of South Africa prompted tests to determine the effect of different mid-column decks of inert material in the siltstone layer. The objective was to achieve significant cost savings in explosives use whilst not degrading dragline productivity. An important factor that had to be considered was that the initiation systems available in South Africa are not accurate enough to ensure simultaneous initiation of explosives decks in a blasthole. A number of inert materials were tested including ash, drill cuttings, river sand and crushed stone. It was found that the ash, drill cuttings and river sand did not effectively attenuate the shock wave and that the risks of sympathetic detonation or partial disruption of one or the other explosives deck in a blasthole was high. This became much worse when the inert material was saturated with water. Crushed rock was the most effective in attenuating the shock wave, but this material was very expensive to use because it had to be imported onto the mine.

There currently exists no viable means of obtaining continuous, quantified feedback on blast efficiency. This paper describes the adaptation of a loading shovel to serve as a diagnostic tool in evaluating the success of ground preparation practices. Work undertaken in a large western Canadian open pit involved microprocessor-based instrumentation for the performance monitoring of an electric mining shovel. The monitored shovel responses proved to be reliable indicators of variations in muckpile d&ability. This approach is considered to provide a very comprehensive survey of post blast conditions since the shovel must physically interact which every cubic yard of blast fragmentation.

Globalization was the key word for the mining industry during the 1990s, just as productivity was the key word of the 1980s. And globalization will remain the key word as the industry enters the 21st century, according to speakers at the Colorado MPD Meeting held in Colorado Springs, CO in May. The meeting, put on by the Colorado Section SME Minerals Processing Division, drew about 120 people to the Broadmoor Hotel. “Operating Globally” was the theme of the 49th annual conference. Speakers addressed the reasons why mining companies have limited their spending in the United States and have moved into Third World and developing nations.

Mintek has developed the EnviroplasTM process for the treatment of solid wastes from the metallurgical industry, especially steel plant dusts, without requiring agglomeration to produce inert slag and at the same time recover metal values such as nickel, chromium and zinc. The products that are generated in the plasma-arc process are usually a metal and a non-toxic slag, which are tapped from the furnace in liquid form. The metal is mainly composed of chromium, nickel and manganese. During the production of stainless steel between 30 and 70 kg of dust and fine waste is generated per ton of steel. Mintek has successfully processed around 1000t of AOD/EAF dust on a toll treatment basis in order to recover the contained Cr and Ni. The metal produced contained 18.5 per cent Cr, and 5.5 per cent Ni. All slag samples tested conformed to US EPA regulations for disposal. The chromium and nickel recovery to metal was 90 and 98 per cent respectively, on a once through basis i.e. no baghouse dust recycle. Slag tapping temperatures varied between 1650°C and 1750°C. The average actual energy requirement excluding furnace heatlosses of smelting steel plant dust with anthracite as reductant was 1.36MWh/ ton of dust. The total mass of feed reporting to the off-gas stream was 10 per cent. The average ZnO content of the fume was 35.5 per cent.

"The Netherlands has major resources of sand, gravel and clay, exploited mainly for construction works and the building materials industry. As in most western countries, mineral extraction meets with considerable societal resistance. To this end, Dutch minerals policy aims to prevent extraction by promoting economical use of materials, and the use of alternative (secondary or renewable) materials. Up till recently, it also included a system of production planning to sustain supplies of regionally scarce materials. Dutch policy development is reviewed and discussed in terms of pitfalls and possibilities for mineral planning in general. Promoting secondary substitution has been quite successful, and presents an example. In contrast, the production planning system has been controversial from the start and ineffective as a result, mainly because it attempted to solve supply problems without properly addressing the underlying resistance. Electrocoagulation (EC) has been performed with Al-Fe electrode system with changing polarity for the removal of arsenic from water. The removal process has been studied using ICP-AES and Anodic Stripping Voltammetry with a wide range of arsenic concentration (1-1000 ppm) at various pH (4-10) and residence times (1-60 min). Electrochemically generated by-products have been analyzed using XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM/EDS and Mössbauer Spectroscopy. Results revealed expected crystalline iron oxides (magnetite (Fe3O4), lepidocrocite (FeO(OH)), iron oxide (FeO)) and aluminum oxides (bayerite (Al(OH)3), diaspore (AlO(OH)), mansfieldite (AlAsO4?2(H2O)), as well as some interaction between the phases. The amorphous or ultra-fine particular phase was also found in the floc. The substitution of Fe3+ ions by Al3+ ions in the solid surface has been observed, indicating an alternative removal mechanism of arsenic in these metal hydroxides and oxyhydroxides by providing larger surface area for arsenic adsorption via retarding the crystalline formation of iron oxides.

Discussion of the paper of Robert Henry Lee, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 82, October, 1913, pp. 2515 to 2522. J. E. JOHNSON, JR., New York, N. Y.:-This subject is of great and increasing importance, as the exhaustion of the deposits of ore of ideal character compels the iron industry to turn more and more to those which are less desirable on account of physical structure as well as analysis. Thus there has come about the use of the Mesabi ores in this country and also of the Minette ores in Europe, which produce far greater percentages of flue dust than did the lumpy ores first used. It is a matter of common knowledge that the utilization of this flue dust, containing commonly 50 per. cent. or more of metallic iron, has been a problem very difficult and tedious of solution. The number and variety of the solutions now offered is a sufficient proof of this. . I have no intention of going into the merits or demerits of any of these processes as such, but there are certain considerations concerning the effect of their product on the operation and fuel economy of the blast furnace which I believe to be new and which I desire to bring out. There are two methods, so different as almost to be direct opposites of each other, whereby an ore may exercise an unfavorable effect on the economy of the blast furnace. The first of these is well known and results from the ore being refractory and highly resistant to the action of the reducing gases of the blast furnace. This results in its being incompletely reduced when it reaches the zone of fusion and in the reduction being finished by the direct action of carbon in the lower portion of the furnace. This is so well understood as to need little elaboration or comment. There is, however, another action which may be equally as fatal to the economy of the furnace as the foregoing, and as this point is, to the best of my knowledge, not generally appreciated, it is one upon which I desire to lay particular stress. This consists in the ore being, in a sense, too reducible.

This paper presents a cost comparison of the driven pile foundations for two large Wisconsin Department of Transportation (?WisDOT?) projects in Milwaukee, Wisconsin: the Marquette Interchange South Leg, and the Canal Street Viaduct. The projects? geology is fairly similar, but their methods/approaches to pile foundation design and installation differ. Although the Marquette Interchange South Leg had deeper poor soils, its pile design was more-cost-effective than the Canal Street Viaduct?s. Potential reasons for cost differences between the projects are identified, and the effect of the different design and construction approaches on economics is discussed.

The use of coal for power generation is being questioned in many developed countries, as a result of ever-tightening environmental restrictions and concerns about the potential impact of CO2emissions on climate. Coal will continue to be the fuel of choice for new power plants for many developing countries with large percentages of the world?s population, because of its relatively low cost and broad availability. Even in many of the developed countries that are under pressure, coal will continue to fuel large percentages of power due to the installed base. Using coal efficiently and in an environmentally responsible manner will be a challenge for technology and politics in this new century, with the politics played out on the world stage. Coal use will vary in the next few decades, including short-term changes such as the use of more diverse coals and the increased use of efficient ultra-supercritical boilers to longer term ?refining? of coal to produce a range of energy and chemical outputs. This paper outlines EPRI?s Global Coal Initiative aimed at needed developments and demonstrations that support the long-term vision of environmentally sound and economical coal use for power generation, and discusses some of the forces that are driving this development effort.

Surface mining operations typically require run-of-mine material to be sized for further processing. In-pit crushing facilities serve this need, as stationary, semi-mobile or fully mobile units. Although in particular fully mobile crushing facilities have been in use for over half of a century, other surface mining techniques have typically been implemented. However, with increasing operating costs in truck and shovel operations, and other economic considerations, mobile crushing plants are increasingly a viable option. The operational and economical parameters in relation to the optimal surface mining equipment selection will be reviewed. The role of the mobile crushing technology within the continuous vs. noncontinuous surface mining operation and basis for mine planning are also discussed. Current applications and respective case studies will be reviewed. Key performance indicators will be presented. These performance parameters can be viewed as a tool to aid in the equipment selection process. The future direction for further research and development in mobile crushing facilities will also be presented.

Testing ores for heap leach operations traditionally follows a progression of bottle roll tests, bucket and column leach tests, and very expensive large field leach tests. Enough data is now available to streamline the procedures. Data from five different operations shows that recoveries from large field leach tests can be predicted from the bucket tests. Initial recovery times in large field leaches are longer than in bucket tests- a typical response is eight days versus twenty days to the same recovery percentage; but the ultimate percent recoveries (after 60 days) are normally very close. Methods of mining and stacking can radically affect recoveries from clay-rich ores. Leaching of uncrushed ores provides special testing problems, since accurate samples smaller than several tons cannot be taken.

La unidad de producción polimetálica de Yauliyacu, ubicada en la localidad de Casapalca, Lima, tiene una presa de relaves en el paraje de Chinchan del mismo departamento. Sin embargo, dado que la presa nueva Yauliyacu culminaría su función y que la presa auxiliar Tablachaca no contaba con la suficiente capacidad de almacenaje, Centromin Perú evalúo otras alternativas para la ubicación y construcción de una nueva. De acuerdo al estudio realizado, se encontró que la quebrada de Chinchan era la más adecuada puesto que ofrecía mayor capacidad de producción y se descartó las de Corina y Tablachaca. En este sentido, el presente texto describe las características de la quebrada, el diseño del depósito de Chinchan, su proceso de construcción, la limpieza de fundación, el análisis de la estabilidad física y química, la implementación para mejorar la estabilidad de la presa, la mejora de calidad del aire en la zona del depósito, el programa de inversiones y el plan de cierre del relave.

Mr. President, and Members of the Rocky Mountain Coal-Mining Institute-Gentlemen : I appreciate the distinction of addressing this representative body of men upon a subject that lies so close to the heart of each one of us, and which is one of the principal objects of our gathering here today, in this beautiful city-so beautiful, with its grand and glorious mountains looking down upon us, that its charm makes us almost forget the men we left toiling "underneath the ground." But that object-the safeguarding of our coal-miners, who spend the greater part of their lives delving in the bowels of the earth-is the cause of our gathering from the "rock-ribbed" States of Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado. And, as I look about me, my eye lights on the face of many an old-time friend- on some with whom I have walked for more than thirty years; so, whatever the merit of this little talk of mine, it cannot be said that it was made by a "tenderfoot." You must not for a moment think that I shall attempt the impossible task of completely covering so comprehensive a subject as '(Accidents in Coal Mines,' and take much more time than has been allotted me, or would be advisable for me to consume. So I shall confine myself, as briefly as possible, to some of the most common causes of accidents, and the possible means by which these disasters may be diminished. For a great many years the cause of mine accidents and their prevention have been the subject of grave thought and investigation by both national and state governments. As early as 1835 Great Britain appointed a royal commission of talented men, possessing special knowledge in the conduct of coal- mining, also eminent authorities in science and its application, to search into these matters. Maintaining high carbon activity is vital to the efficiency of any Carbon-In-Leach or Carbon-In-Pulp process. Reduced activity can lead to longer residence times or gold losses in the tails. Regenerated carbon from the CIL circuit at Macraes Gold Mine was analysed for kinetic activity and composition over a 15 month period. An increase in kinetic activity during the time period was recorded, which was linked to reduced Na and Ca loadings. A laboratory simulation of the loading, stripping and regeneration of gold was developed and tested. Kinetic activities were obtained for synthetically fouled carbons following three circuits of the laboratory simulation. It was shown the competitive gold adsorption ability of xanthate fouled carbon (previously reported as a serious deactivator) could be significantly recovered following effective thermal regeneration. This ability was maintained in a subsequent circuit loading.

There are three major components of a fully grouted roof bolt which primarily determine its ability to develop and sustain load: the steel rebar, the resin annulus, and the rock/grout interface. The untensioned, fully grouted roof bolt is subjected to loading only when the surrounding rock deforms. Vertical rock deformation is generally a result of strata sagging and bedding plane separation, whereas horizontal deformation is typically a result of bedding plane sliding. These two types of deformation create different types of internal loads with-in the roof bolt, tensile stress for vertical rock deformations and shear stress for horizontal rock deformations. Also, as a result of the mutual load transfer between the rock and bolt, shear stress will be developed along the grout/rock interface. According to the exact bolt loading conditions, different failure modes may occur: bolt axial failure, bolt shear failure, and shear failure along the grout/rock interface. Understanding these possible failure modes and their root causes is the key to eliminating roof failures in underground mines employing fully grouted resin bolts. Using ABAQUS 5.8, a finite element model was developed to simulate the components of the fully grouted bolt and its interaction with the surrounding roof strata. Several models were conducted to investigate how load transfer occurs between the rock and the bolt under different geological and mining conditions. The effects of bed-ding plane location and properties, and strata sequence on bolt stability were studied. Also, the effects of hole roughness on bolt stability were discussed. Bolt axial failure was not observed within the range of the studied parameters; however, a combination of high overburden depth, a bedding plane located at 2 to 3 ft from the roofline or a low coefficient of friction along the bedding plane caused strata sliding and shears failure in the bolt. Also, in the case of a weak immediate roof, the shear stress at the grout/rock interface could exceed its ultimate capacity lead to slippage.

Research was conducted to study the characteristics of longwall mining machine noises and to develop engineering controls for the reduction of noise exposure at longwall faces. Time-motion noise dosimeter data was analyzed and compared with existing databases. Experiments were conducted above ground on a stage loader/crusher to explore the potential of using active noise control (noise cancellation) in reducing the noise levels. A 5-7 dBA reduction in recorded stage loader noise was achieved. This paper presents the equipment, procedure and results of the noise surveys, as well as the active noise control experiments.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA), and the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency (Alameda CMA) are involved in a unique partnership on the planning and design of the fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel, located on State Route 24 in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. The project will add a two-lane bore north of the existing three bores. The project will alleviate traffic congestion in the non-peak direction. This paper provides background on the existing facility, summarizes the need for the new fourth bore, describes the proposed improvements, sets forth the approach for project delivery, and lists some of the challenges that are expected during construction.

This article deals with some of the civil engineering related problems to be encountered when offshore wind energy projects transform from prototype offshore wind energy converter farms, developed and installed during the 1990?s, to commercial farms that?s currently planned to be built. The offshore wind energy converter (OWEC) installations encounter a wide range of problems, only partial of these are geotechnical. In Europe both onshore and offshore wind farms have, from a historical point of view, usually been founded by using the monopole technique, installed with traditional impact hammers, or by using gravitational foundations. However, the rapid development of bigger turbines and larger wind farms, together with increasing considerations of fatigue aspects, has lead to financial benefits of developing and exploring other foundation techniques. This paper reviews some Scandinavian experiences regarding critical components of the design phase in relation to connecting the superstructure to the ground, and some of the main considerations of how the loads applied to the structure are transferred to the surrounding soil.

"The present large-scale use of energy and power by the human species represents a unique event in the billions of years of geologic history. Furthermore, in magnitude, most of the development has occurred during the present century. In the United States, the peak in the rate of petroleum production occurred in 1970 and that for natural gas is imminent. The peak in the world production of crude oil is expected to occur at about the year 2000 and that for coal production at about 2150 or 2200. For other sources of energy and power, water power, geothermal power and tidal power are inadequate to replace power from fossil fuels. Nuclear power, based on the breeder reactor and utilizing lowgrade deposits of uranium and thorium, has a larger potential than the fossil fuels, but it also constitutes a large perpetual hazard. The largest source of energy available to the earth is solar radiation. This source has a life-expectancy of a geologic time scale, is nonpolluting and is larger in magnitude than any likely requirements by the human s pecies. In consequence of the large supplies of available energy, the period since 1800 has been one of an unprecedented exponential industrial growth. This also has been accompanied by a world-wide ecological disturbance, including that of the human population. It can easily be seen that such a period of growth must be ephemeral in character and, in fact, is now almost over. One aspect of this transition from a state of exponential growth to a state of nongrowth is the present alarm over an ""energy crisis."" Actually, the world's present problems are by no means unmanageable in terms of present biological and technological knowledge. The real crisis confronting us is, therefore, not an energy crisis but a cultural crisis. During the last two centuries, we have evalved what amounts to an exponential- growth culture, with institutions based on the premise of an indefinite continuation of exponential growth. One of the principal consequences of the cessation of exponential growth will be an inevitable revision of some of the tenets of that culture."
