"Les Mines Selbaie have been producing copper and zinc concentrates from the A-1 ore zone since 1986. This paper reviews major developments in flotation practice over that period. Firstly, ore blending strategies for Selbaie's non-homogeneous polymetallic ore are discussed. The evolution of reagent use is then reviewed, focussing on copper collector trials. A description of Selbaie's flotation columns follows. The mine produces copper concentrates containing gold and silver as well as zinc concentrates containing silver. 8000 dmt/day of ore is crushed and ground to 80% passing 49 µm, prior to processing by conventional copper/zinc differential flotation. The flotation circuits consist of both conventional and column cells (fig. 2). Detailed descriptions of the mill are available elsewhere in the literature (8,9)."

Surface subsidence induced by underground coal mining activities, especially longwall mining operations, can cause various problems to interstate highways ranging from structural integrity, drivability to safety. Accurate subsidence prediction, correct influence assessments, and effective mitigation measures are the keys to ensure the safety of highway traffic. The surface subsidence prediction program, called comprehensive and integrated subsidence prediction model (CISPM), was developed based on the principle of influence function method and has been validated with a large number of subsidence measurements. In this paper, the techniques to use the predicted final surface movements and deformations for assessing their influence on the integrity and functionality of highway structures (e.g., road surface pavements, concrete slabs, transverse joints, etc.), vehicle dynamics, comfort level, and drivability are presented. A number of mitigation measures to protect the highway structures and to ensure traffic safety are proposed along with an application case.

The achievement of high availability of the Grey River Gold Mining Limited's alluvial gold dredge is a tortuous task which will rely upon the dedication of all staff employed at Grey River Gold Mining Limited (GRGML). The persistent adoption of new technology and better operating procedures, combined with a strong commitment to preventative and predictive maintenance, is necessary. The Grey River Gold Mining Limited alluvial gold dredge is operating in a relatively low grade alluvial gold deposit and hence relies on a high throughput of ore to be profitable. To achieve the required high material throughput the dredge incorporates an overburden removal system which operates simultaneously with a conventional bucketline system.   The overburden system incorporates a cutter wheel and suction pump configuration which is dedicated to removing the low grade (5 mg gold/m3 gravel) overburden. The bucketline conveys the richer grade payzone gravels (up to 890 mg/m3 gravel) to the recovery plant mounted onboard the dredge. The horizon for the overburden system approximates 15 m and the payzone terminates at the interface of the old man rock and the alluvial gravels at a variable depth averaging 22 m.   From a mechanical engineering perspective the dredge is a machine comprised of two materials handling systems which are controlled by Operations Staff and electronic process control systems.   The availability of such a materials handling system is a function of four variables: 1. The environment that the machine operates in. 2. The ability of the people operating the machine. 3. The design of the mechanisms, the configuration that they are grouped in and the effectiveness of the process control systems which control the mechanisms. 4. The procedures utilised to predict the performance of the machines and the skill of staff to analyse that data and carry out effective maintenance.

Most accidents are the result of risk taking. They can happen anywhere. Our coal industry categorizes accidents by type, occupation, commodity, age, every way you can imagine. We now know, how many were injured and when, for all the different types of accidents. We have ask ourselves many times, why are we having accidents, how can we stop the accidents and fatals in our industry? Present numbers and projections do not show that this will happen. Serious accidents can result in fatalities. Fatal accident can be prevented, and the coal industry can achieve zero fatalities. How soon this happens, depends on a great number of factors. I will discuss accidents and reasons for us having accidents in an attempt to get to the root causes. The historical perspective will be touched on, and the risk and analysis of accidents will be probed.

Underground coal mining is traditionally hazardous. Although many danger-prone human activities are now performed by mechanized equipment, this mechanization has itself brought new dangers to the underground mining industry, and the loss of life and limb has caused increased concern for mine safety. The 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act has precipitated a great deal of safety-related research on the part of the Government, industry, and private agencies. Much of this safety research has been focused on the new and varied man-machine interfaces caused by increased mechanization. Recent projects in this area have dealt with standardized controls, emergency shutdown capabilities (panic bars, strike plates, self-centering controls, "dead man" controls), and machine operator protective devices (fully enclosed cabs, canopies, side rails). There was a need for integration of the findings of current and past projects to move rapidly toward the smooth, orderly implementation of standardized operator work station designs for underground mining equipment.

The world mineral industry has over the years experienced growth in the production of nickel (Ni) due to its use not only in the catalytic industry but mainly also to its demand in the stainless steel production industry. Hence there is a need to produce more pure and marketable grades of Ni through the use of efficient purification routes such as solvent extraction. The V10-LIX®84-IC system resulted in nickel (Ni) extraction isotherm shifting to lower pH levels. The pH window of opportunity for the extraction of Ni subsequently increased in solution containing magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) even though the system also resulted in slight shifts to less positive pH values for Mg and Ca curves. Results showed a synergistic effect of LIX®84-IC when added to V10 for all elements, Ni, Mg and Ca. The pH50 values for elements Ni, Mg and Ca in the V10-LIX®84-IC system were 2.95, 8.10 and 7.70 respectively. Comparing results obtained when using V10 alone produced ?pH50 for Ni, Mg and Ca being 3.35, 0.15 and 0.70 respectively, which was a confirmation of the synergistic shifts for all the elements. The ?pH50 (Mg-Ni)value was 1.95 with no synergism and 5.15 with synergism and that for ?pH50 (Ca-Ni)was 2.10 with no synergism and 4.75 with synergism. This showed that the Ni-Mg separation factor was relatively larger than the Ni-Ca. Improved loading and stripping kinetics were also observed. MFIRE is a computer simulation program that performs normal ventilation network planning calculations, and dynamic transient state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions. The program is useful for the analysis of ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence. MFIRE simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters, external influences such as temperatures, and internal influences such as fires. Extensive output enables detailed quantitative analysis of the effects of the proposed alteration to the ventilation system Network simulation using digital computers has become widespread throughout the mining industry in recent years. However, as the sophistication of the simulator increases (MFIRE, for example), the complexity of input data requirements and interpretations of results requires more skill and knowledge from the users. Perhaps the most difficult part of using MFIRE is to construct the data set describing the mine's physical layout and its ventilation properties. The initial attempts to get the data set running often reveal unknown or ignored aspects of the mine's ventilation. MFIRE was written in Fortran 77 and compiled with Microway1 Fortran for the Intel 80386 based computers with a 80387 math co-processor. The source code is portable and available for users who wish to modify the source code to operate on other computers. This user manual describes the development of MFIRE, the input format and requirements, the output, common errors, fire parameters, and examples MFIRE application. Valuable reference material is included in the appendices. Knowledgeable users may skip directly to the PROGRAM INSTALLATION AND OPERATION section to begin using MFIRE immediately.

INTRODUCTION The method of heat removal during a casting process strongly influences the crystal morphology of the cast product and hence the metallurgical and mechanical properties of the solidified materials. In this paper, the Ohno Continuous Casting Process (OCC) is described in terms of the casting conditions and the type of structure observed in the cast product. Significant improvements are observed in workability, fatigue strength and corrosion resistance of castings produced by the OCC method, Ohno (1988). Applications of this technique to low melting point nonferrous metals and alloys are discussed. The feasibility of the application of this technology to high melting point materials is outlined. THE OCC PROCESS The OCC process involves delivering liquid metal into a heated mold, the temperature of which is held just above the solidification temperature of the metal to be cast. This is the key point which differentiates the OCC process from the conventional continuous casting method. A schematic illustration of the OCC process is shown in Figure 1. The Formation of a Single Crystal When the mold is heated above the solidification temperature of the metal to be cast, nucleation on the mold surface is prevented and solidification takes place only at the mold exit. The heat is extracted through the product being cast by a cooling device located near the mold outlet. Crystals are formed only at the tip of the dummy bar at the start of casting, and as the dummy bar travels away with a progressively increasing speed from the mold, the position of the solid liquid interface will align with the mold exit, producing a unidirectionally

During recent years, copper and acid production from Nkana Smelter has formed a significant proportion of ZCCM's total output, but a number of problems affecting the smelter over the last decade have only been recently overcome. This paper discusses recent developments in the smelting practice, highlighting some of the operational problems experienced and associated solutions. The smelter performance over the decade is discussed and the innovations in the smelting technology employed to sustain production in the wake of limited re-capitalization are dealt with in detail.

Drainage of water from abandoned underground mines has become important in recent years because of safety concerns when mining near abandoned works or reentering abandoned mines for further development. Seepage from inundated mines causes environmental damage and may threaten homes and communities. Where topography permits, horizontal drilling can provide a quick and cost effective method for solving trapped water problems. The mechanics of the horizontal drilling operation as applied to water drainage are discussed in this paper.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng) (Chemical) degree This paper details the formulation of a mathematical model for the simulation of a primary bioleach reactor, with specific reference to the leaching of pyrite. The model is based on the direct reaction mechanism, where the leaching of pyrite is said to occur via a two-step process. The process involves the formation of ferrous?iron through the chemical leaching of pyrite and subsequent bacterial oxidation of ferrous-iron back into ferric-iron. At steady state the rate of chemical leaching and bacterial oxidation are linked by the ratio of ferrous-iron to ferric-iron in solution. The extent of conversion of pyrite in the reactor system is described using the segregated flow model, with the exit age distribution of the solid phase being described by the Tanks-in-Series model. The final phase in model formulation involves the inclusion of steady state material balances on the bacteria and fluid phase components. The model is compared to pilot plant data and laboratory data for two different types of pyrite concentrates, with simulation results showing that the model is in good agreement with the data. Although theoretical and conceptual knowledge regarding the impact of horizontal stress on underground coal mining excavations have existed since at least the mid-1900s, it wasn?t until the late 1970?s that the theory and practical understanding began to mesh. Since that time, particularly over the last 25 years of this Conference, increased empirical study, as well as advances in measurement technology, computer simulation, and bolt design, has significantly improved our understanding of horizontal stress impact, and provided coal mine operators with tools to reliably predict and manage it. This paper provides a retrospective review of some of the more important horizontal stress-related advancements made during the 25 years of Conference proceedings, particularly those for predicting and controlling horizontal stress impacts within underground coal mines. Relevant and significant CONSOL experiences and studies will be presented in context, with particular attention to horizontal stress considerations for longwall faces and gateroads. The significance of horizontal stress will also be placed in context with respect to local geology and structure, ground support measures, and mining configuration, method, and sequence.

"SWOT analyses and the closely related TOWS matrix are frequent starting points for an organization to develop its strategy. The paper deals with the evaluation of the TOWS matrix and presents three novel approaches to evaluate the different factors of the TOWS matrix, namely (1) approach to evaluate the factors with identical weights; (2) approach to evaluate factors with their weights determined within the different quadrants of the TOWS matrix; and (3) approach to evaluate factors with weights determined within the whole TOWS matrix. The third approach has two variants. The proposed approaches to evaluate the TOWS matrix were tested on a SWOT analysis of a significant mining company in the Czech Republic. The results imply that the strategy W-T (weaknesses-threats) is recommended in three cases, while the strategy S-T (strengths-threats) is recommended once. The paper may be valuable for managers responsible for strategic planning.IntroductionThe process of human needs gratification has been closely connected with raw material resources of the planet. In the contemporary socio-economic conditions, the task of the mining company managers, apart from extracting mineral resources, is to meet the owners' intents.The managerial work itself becomes very complex. In mining companies in particular, the complexity is augmented by the characteristics of the business. Undoubtedly, the key factor is that mineral resources cannot be renewed or relocated. Stojanovi (2013) characterizes mining projects as involving great investments in finance and time, as well as consecutive decisions and a 'complex mosaic of numerous unknown factors that affect the value of the project'. He adds that mining projects are typified by a 'number of geological, technological, technical, economic, environmental, social, and financial risks' (Stojanovi , 2013).Inter alia, the managerial work may also be intese due to the dynamic internal and external conditions for the existence of any company (Vane? k, 2014). This tallies with Peter Drucker’s prediction in 1969; that the times at the turn of the millennium could be expected to be turbulent (Drucker, 1969)."

Blue Mountain Minerals is a large supplier of calcium carbonate products used by various manufacturers as a major raw material. Very small amounts of free carbon in the rock can have a huge impact in carbon-sensitive applications. The marble in the deposit at Blue Mountain Minerals contains variable amounts of free carbon in the form of trace amounts of the mineral graphite.To make quality improvements, variography was used to measure the impact of non-ideal sampling practices at the Blue Mountain Minerals operations in Columbia, California in the United States. A major investment in correct sampling systems and sampling protocols was implemented over a one-year period. Subsequent variography was used to measure the improvement on the predictability of the graphite content in marble produced by the quarry and as it is processed as an acceptable raw material for extremely carbon-sensitive applications. The improvements of the sampling protocols, control of long-range changes and better knowledge of process cycles are easily noticeable on variograms when they happen to exist. Eng.(Metallurgical Engineering) degree The interrelationship between mineral liberation and leaching behaviour of a gold ore is ill defined, mainly due to the complexity of both leaching and mineral liberation. This study presents a neural network approach to modelling the liberation of gold bearing ores. A complete mineralogical analysis of unmilled and milled ores, including gold deportment and gangue content are used as inputs to a self-organizing neural net, which generates order preserving topological maps. The arrangement and shapes of these clusters are coupled to unmilled free gold data to predict gold liberation in milled ores (absolute error: 8.1%). Moreover, the self-organizing maps were diagnostic of the quality of data used, indicating that the relationship between particle size and gangue material content requires further investigation.

Underground excavations exhibit different hangingwall conditions in response to varying geotechnical and mining situations. These differences need to be quantified so as to accurately determine the effectiveness of the mining and/or support strategies. A useful tool for the quantification of these differences is hangingwall profiling. Two methods of hangingwall profile measurement are described?termed irregular and periodic methods. Several data analysis techniques are reviewed for these methods and the suitable ones are discussed in detail. For irregular data the suitable techniques are the determination of the length, the average of the profile and the average absolute deviation from the mean of the profile. All of these techniques as well as determination of the moving average of the height and examination of the spectral image of the profile can be successfully applied to regular data. The effect of preconditioning on the hangingwall is discussed as an example and it is quantitatively shown that it results in improvements of conditions. The techniques described allow the engineer to quantitatively identify the appropriate support type or mining strategy and thus represent a valuable decision-making tool. It is suggested that these techniques should be employed on a routine basis by the rock engineers on the mines as part of their geotechnical classification, as well as support manufacturers to quantify the effectiveness of various support types.

Na-feldspar (albite) and K-feldspar (microcline or orthoclase) are major feldspar minerals with identical crystal structures and physicochemical properties. Flotation appears to be a unique method of separating these minerals. Fundamental studies on amine/feldspar system in the presence of monovalent salts showed that separation of these feldspar minerals by flotation is possible at certain concentration of monovalent salts in HF medium and natural pH. A comparison between natural pH and HF medium indicates that the latter provides a better selectivity at the expense of higher collector requirement. A general mechanism for both systems involving an ion exchange between the uncommon ions and adsorption of the common ions is proposed to be responsible for creating differences in the charge of albite and microcline unto which amine adsorbs.

Gilsonite is a lustrous black material that can be easily crushed into a chocolate-colored powder. It is a solid but relatively soft, lightweight hydrocarbon that visually resembles the volcanic glass obsidian. It was once thought to be a type of coal, but because it is thermoplastic it melts rather than bums. Gilsonite is found in commercial quantities only in the Uinta Basin of eastern Utah and western Colorado, where it forms vertical, nearly parallel veins of varying depth, width, and length. Gilsonite from different veins has different properties, most notably variations in softening point and solubility. These differences result in its use in a variety of industrial applications. Gilsonite's earliest commercial uses were in varnishes, buggy paints, and beer vat linings. Eventually it came to be used in more than 160 products ranging from inks to explosives. It is exported from the United States to most industrialized countries throughout the world. Today, due to competition from synthetics and other hydrocarbon products, its use has narrowed to several specific industries. Although sold mostly as a commodity, current research is focused on applications for gilsonite as a value added product. Historical Overview The discovery of gold in California and the dawn of the mining era in Nevada, Colorado, and Utah around 1850 brought a wave of prospectors to the western United States. One of those pioneers, Samuel H. Gilson, is generally credited with a major role in the discovery of gilsonite. The material now known as gilsonite was discovered several times from the late 1860s through the mid-1880s. It was William P. Blake who, after receiving samples of the material, wrote a paper in 1885 describing "a new variety of asphaltum from the Uinta Mountains." He termed the material uintaite. Although Sam Gilson was not the first to discover the mineral, he was an-inventor who used gilsonite in products that he patented. It was his conviction that the substance was of great value, which caused some to refer to it as gilsonite. The term Gilsonite became the registered trademark of the American Gilsonite Co., and it continues to be in use today. When the first company was formed to mine this substance in 1886 it was named the Gilsonite Manufacturing Co. This firm acquired many gilsonite mining claims and marketed a varnish made from the material. It was the unusual properties of gilsonite varnish that attracted the attention of Adolphus Busch of the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Co. In 1889 Anheuser-Busch bought out Gilson's interests and formed the Gilson Asphaltum Co. Busch had been importing asphalt from Sicily for use in lining beer barrels and saw gilsonite as being more readily available and cheaper. Although gilsonite did not work well in this application, Busch did acquire a large number of mining claims in the Uinta Basin. In 1903 the parent firm of Gilson Asphaltum financed the building of an 85-km railroad from near Grand Junction, CO, to Dragon, UT, to haul gilsonite ore to market. Underground mining was initially centered near Dragon and then later at Bonanza, UT, as different veins were mined. The railway was abandoned in 1937 in favor of truck transportation. In 1938 Gilson Asphaltum changed its name to Barber Asphalt Co., the predecessor of Barber Oil Corp. In 1946 Barber Oil teamed with Standard Oil of California to form a partnership, American Gilsonite Co., which today has its operational headquarters at Bonanza, UT. Barber Oil investigated many new uses for gilsonite, including the making of petroleum derivatives such as gasoline. This work led to the construction of a 116-km pipeline to carry slurried gilsonite to a refinery in Colorado for the production of gasoline, fuel oil, and coke. Pipeline operations began in 1957 but stopped when the economics of competing with petroleum became unfavorable, and the refinery was sold in 1973. In 1981 Standard Oil (later Chevron) became the sole owner of American Gilsonite and remained so until 1991, when it sold its interest to Stratford Enterprises Co. of Tulsa, OK. The companies have since been merged and now operate under the name American Gilsonite Co. with headquarters in Salt Lake City, UT. American Gilsonite continues to be the world's largest miner and supplier of the mineral. The American Asphalt Association was formed in 1902 by former stockholders in Gilson Asphaltum. This company mined various gilsonite claims until it was dissolved in 1953 and its properties were sold to American Gilsonite and Gordon S. Ziegler and Associates. The Utah Gilsonite Co. was established in 1920 and mined several claims until 1952, when its holdings were sold to Gordon Ziegler. Several other gilsonite mining ventures have been pursued in Utah, although they were significantly smaller in scale than those described above. There are currently three companies which mine gilsonite resin in Utah. They are American Gilsonite Co., Ziegler Chemical & Mineral Corp., and Lexco.

"Effect of mill speed on grinding kinetics has been investigated with a view to using mill speed as a manipulated variable for control and optimization of the grinding circuit performance under variable ore hardness conditions. Dry and wet batch grinding tests were carried out for quartz, limestone and cement clinker in a 29 cm x 18 cm laboratory ball mill. Mill speed values selected were 55 and 70% critical. In the case of dry grinding operation, with an exception of quartz, for all materials studied the effect of mill speed on grinding rate was found to be insignificant for sizes finer than about 35 mesh. In the case of wet operation, grinding rates were found to be approximately proportional to the mill speed. The implications of these results are discussed.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that mill speed has a considerable effect on the grinding rate of the ore particles l-3 For particles of a given size there is an optimum speed at which mill grinding efficiency is maximum (i.e. specific energy consumption is minimum) 3•4. Mill speed can, therefore, be effectively used as a manipulated variable to deal with the disturbances arising from changes in the size and hardness (grinding rate) of the ore being fed to the grinding circuit. Though, it has not been the case so far, with recent developments of ring motors2 and frequency inverters5 a continuous variation of mill speed has now become feasible, and it is expected that mill speed control will soon be a regular feature of plant operation2,6."
