Some 800 analyses for Cu, Zn, Pb, Ag, Fe, S, CaO, MgO, C02, Si02 and Al203 were used to examine the elemental constitution of the Mount Isa ores, and, for comparison, those of the Northern Leases area.Lead: zinc relations show little order from sample to sample, but means of large zones (Le. individual orebodies) show a highly linear inverse relationship. Lead: silver ratios are fairly constant from sample to sample, and means show a highly linear direct relationship.Sulphide sulphur appears to be related to carbonate and alumina abundance, sulphur decreasing systematically with increase in the ratio CO2:AI203. In all graphs involving members of the group CO2-A203-S the lead-zinc and copper ores conform to the same simple trends, confirming that the two ore types and their host rocks are genetically closely related. The earlier deduction of a volcanic-sedimentary origin for the sulphides of the Black Star orebodies appears compatible with present findings.On the basis of such an origin, the pattern of sulphide occurrence and mineralogy in the Mount Isa district is possibly related to the configuration f the upper surface of the "Eastern Creek Volcanics", the facies patterns of the overlying sedimentary rocks, and to the oldest faults affecting the two.INTRODUCTIONStanton (1962) described and interpreted the chemical constitution of the Black Star No. 2 lead-zinc and the 650750 copper orebodies at Mount Isa. The investigation has now been extended to the other principal orebodies of the area.The earlier study showed that the host rocks of the two adjacent Black Star orebodies were constitutionally closely related, and suggested that this was probably due to their original formation in contiguous zones of sedimentation. On this basis the silica-dolomite of the copper ore appeared to represent the slightly more shoreward, "limey" member, probably a fairly massive algal calcareous sediment laid...

"A flotation bank consists of a serial arrangement of cells. How to optimally operate a bank remains a challenge. This article reviews three strategies for optimizing bank performance: air profiling, mass-pull (froth velocity) profiling and Peak Air Recovery (PAR) profiling. These are all ways of manipulating the recovery profile down a bank, which may be the property being exploited. Mathematical analysis has shown that a flat cell-by-cell recovery profile maximizes the separation of two floatable minerals for a given target bank recovery when the relative floatability is constant down the bank. Available bank survey data is analyzed in respect to recovery profiling. Possible variations on recovery profile to minimize entrainment are discussed.INTRODUCTION Flotation is used to separate valuable minerals from each other and from gangue. To reach a target metallurgical performance, usually assessed in terms of concentrate grade and recovery, feed is passed through stages such as roughing, cleaning and scavenging. All these stages comprise serial arrangements of flotation cells known as banks, lines or rows. Although a bank is the simplest interconnection of cells in a circuit, i.e. the tails of one cell is the feed to the next cell down the bank, how to operate each flotation cell in a way that the whole bank performance is optimized remains a challenge. Significant efforts have been made towards understanding the effect of operating variables on the flotation performance of an isolated cell (Lynch et al., 1981; Finch and Dobby, 1990; Gorain et al., 1998). However in the case of banks the variables that can be manipulated increase with the number of cells in the bank and the problem of how to manipulate them to achieve optimum performance is difficult even disregarding variation in ore characteristics (Lynch et al., 1981, p. 16). In general, the more manipulated variables available the better for optimization purposes, however without clear guidance how to effectively use them it becomes an “embarrassment of riches”."

Olympic Dam has been investigating mine design options for the South Mine Area (SMA), which will continue using the existing sublevel open stoping (SLOS) method. The SMA is an undeveloped mining area, located south of the existing underground mining areas currently in production at Olympic Dam. The SMA study reached the stage where geotechnical inputs were required for stope design, infrastructure location and ground support forecasts. A large database of geotechnical data was collected to inform open pit designs for the ODX (Olympic Dam expansion) project (resulting from 659 drill holes). This geotechnical data has since been reprocessed to align with design inputs required for the SLOS mining method. The result has been the construction of a preliminary three-dimensional mining rock mass model (MRMM) that has been incorporated into preliminary stope mine design and infrastructure layout assessments, which have taken into account the predicted prevailing ground conditions.As with any model, it is necessary to improve the confidence in its predictability; therefore the model must be calibrated. The preliminary SMA MRMM was no exception. First pass calibration was possible with results from underground geotechnical window mapping from exposed rock mass conditions in the lateral development and surface geotechnical holes for ventilation shafts.The SMA project continues to advance and has started a program of resource drilling. Selected holes have been identified that target data limited areas. This will ensure that the data gaps are infilled in order to maintain the required data density required to improve the model confidence. In addition, further underground window mapping in the SMA will provide ‘mine scale drill hole’ data that can be used to either update the MRMM or as part of planned future calibration. Stope performance data from stopes will provide further valuable data for calibration purposes.The proposed paper will present the process and findings that have been followed in order to establish a well calibrated geotechnical model that can be used with an acceptable level of confidence in the ongoing refinements of the mine design and planning process for the SMA.CITATION:Thin, I, Morizzi, L, Mungur, G and Seymour, C, 2016. Cementitious seals are made of foamed cements with strength ranging from 100 to 600 psi. These cementitious seals are usually used at locations where the seal will be subjected to some convergence, assuming that this material can absorb entry closure without compromising the structural integrity of the seal. Prior to 2006, Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) conducted full-scale tests on various cementitious seals designed to meet or exceed the 20-psi horizontal static load requirements of the old 30 CFR1 75.335. Both hydrostatic and dynamic loading tests were conducted. The structural response (pressure and displacement readings) obtained from these tests were recorded. The stability of the cementitious seal is based on balancing the load applied to the face of the seal from the explosion against the shearing resistance at the seal/rock interface. Therefore, the properties of the seal/rock interface, such as stiffness, cohesion, friction, etc. are critical to determine the stability of a cementitious seal. These properties are usually assumed by the researchers in their models. This paper emphasizes the importance of having the correct properties of seal/rock interface in the numerical modeling. FLAC 3D models were developed to simulate Celuseal2 cementitious seals subjected to both hydrostatic and dynamic loadings. Using the hydrostatic and dynamic loading test data conducted at LLEM, the static and dynamic properties of the seal/rock interface were back calculated. The FLAC 3D models showed good agreement with the test results.

Large scale tests were conducted on quartzitic gravel and crushed sand-stone to investigate pertinent geotechnical properties for backfill support of egress shafts. Such shafts are envisaged for rapid launching of deep-based missiles. The backfill support is designed to resist shaft closure under dynamic loading, and must also drain rapidly to a lower catch chamber to allow launching. Large scale tilt shear tests were performed to measure the internal shear strength of the two backfill materials. Shaft filling and emptying tests were conducted in a 12 ft deep, 3 ft diameter model section of shaft drilled in sandstone. One half of the model was smooth bored, the other half rough-surfaced to represent drill and blast surfaces. Vertical and horizontal pressure cells indicated that stress only built-up during the first 1 to 1 ½ diameters of filling, due to the high-sidewall friction of 38° for the rough shaft and 31° for the smooth shaft. Interface sliding tests were performed to confirm these figures. Static and dynamic deformation tests were also per-formed, and indicated moduli as high as 56,000 psi, which will give excellent shaft support. Both the shaft support characteristics and the ease of emptying of gravel look particularly promising.

Mining is increasingly occurring near or below the water table. This has led to a higher rate of handling problems associated with increased moisture and increased adhesion, which lead to a higher rate of blockage events within the materials handling chain. Typically, these ores and minerals are known as ‘wet and sticky materials’.Currently there is very limited knowledge and/or methodologies for effective design of efficient materials handling systems when it comes to handling wet and sticky materials. However, there is one major parameter that significantly affects handleability of a wet and sticky ore; namely, its moisture content. Flow property testing has shown that when moisture is reduced, the adhesive properties of the ore are also significantly reduced, thereby increasing ore flowability.The research embodied in this paper investigates the moisture reduction rate through a loose packed bed of iron ore using dry, ambient temperature airflow. A comparison of the predictive capabilities of a proposed drying model to data obtained from on-site experiments using iron ore fines is made. Building on an assumption made by Hukill (1954), a second term has been proposed to account for rewetting effects in the drying process. Smelting of Cu anode slimes involves the use of a slag to hold the oxidised Cu, but some Ag is also inevitably oxidised to the slag. The solubility of Ag in sodium silicate slags at 1 100 and 1 150 degrees C has now been determined over a very wide range of oxygen partial pressures. Silver was found to be present in the slags both as neutral atoms and as AgO(0.5). The activity coefficient for atomic Ag was a very strong function of slag composition and temperature, whereas that for AgO(0.5) was much less affected by slag composition and was almost independent of temperature over the limited range examined. The results reveal that the dissolved Ag cannot be fully recovered by reduction of the slag with very reducing gases

1.1 Section 47(1) of the Mine Health and Safety Act, 29 of 1996 (?the MHSA?) establishes a Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate which is administered by the Chief Inspector of Mines. The Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate is part of the Department of Mineral Resources. The Chief Inspector is appointed by the Minister of Mineral Resources (see section 48(1) of the MHSA). 1.2 The Chief Inspector must, amongst other things, ensure that the provisions of the MHSA are complied with and enforced, and that all the duties imposed upon the Chief Inspector and the other Inspectors of Mines in terms of the MHSA and any other law are performed. The Chief Inspector of Mines must appoint Principal Inspectors of Mines and Inspectors of Mines to assist him/her to discharge his/her duties (see section 49(1)(a) and (c) of the MHSA).

Hydrocyclones are a common feature in almost all mining operations in the world, serving mainly as classifiers. Some of their advantages include low capital costs, low space requirements and their ability to reduce residence time in closed circuit grinding processes. Although an extensive body of literature exists for hydrocyclones, these devices are still inherently inefficient, and more research is currently being undertaken, particularly in the field of modelling. In the vast body of hydrocyclone literature published so far, there has been little or no effort devoted to analysing the effect of the cone force ratio on the performance of hydrocyclones. The cone force ratio is defined as the ratio of the spigot to the vortex finder diameter (Shah, 2005). In this study a total of 44 tests was carried out in a custom-built rig at the University of Cape Town. These tests were aimed at evaluating the effect of the cone force ratio on the performance of as mall diameter hydrocyclone. The cut size and water split were used as the criterion for evaluating the performance of the hydrocyclone. Results from the tests showed that the cut size decreased with an increase in the cone force ratio. The cut size also appeared to decrease as the calculated locus of zero vertical velocity (LZVV) shifted inwards. The water recovery to the underflow appeared to increase with an increase in the cone force ratio. The effect on the cut size of adjusting the cone force ratio was found to be higher for a coarser feed than it was for a finer feed.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a passive encoder for range knobs, a device that automates the task of obtaining the range settings from devices or instruments to be input to microcomputers. It is easily constructed and installed and will not disrupt the device to which it is being attached. It consists of a custom knob and a small printed circuit board that has light-emitting diodes and magnetic reed switches attached. A ribbon cable connects it to a microcomputer. This encoder eliminates one source of human error in an automated process.

A prototype portable hyperspectral imager that operates in the visible and near-infrared ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum was field tested at an open-pit mine. The tests were sponsored by the Spokane Research Laboratory, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, as part of an investigation of remote sensing technologies for use in detecting and monitoring conditions in surface mines that could lead to catastrophic slope failure. The spectro-polarimetric imager, built at the Carnegie Mellon Research Institute, employs an acousto-optical tunable filter (AOTF) to control wavelength, a phase retarder to measure polarization signatures, and a digital camera and computer to capture data. The spectral range of the instrument is 450 to 1000 nm at 10-nm intervals. High-resolution hyperspectral images of highwalls, outcrops, hand samples, and drill core were collected in the field. Spectra from the images closely matched those of specific minerals present and were used to classify the images. The field tests were designed to examine the feasibility of using spectral imaging to assist in compiling objective geologic maps of mine highwalls and other hazardous slopes. Results illustrate the capability of the method to discriminate materials within the image, validating the concept of simplified spectral imaging. A contributing factor in many slope failures is the presence and distribution of mechanically incompetent, clay-rich altered rock in slope faces. Spectral features of clays and other minerals are more distinctive in the short-wave and mid-infrared part of the spectrum; the capabilities of the instrument need to be extended into this range to apply the AOTF-based technology to common geologic materials. A field-portable hyperspectral imager could find broad application in remotely identifying diverse materials from solids and coatings to gases.

The behaviour of coal in a process is a function of both the coal properties and the processing conditions. In the case of the Loy Yang coal deposit, extensive testing has been undertaken to determine: ò the extent, distribution and structure of the coal resource; ò the variations in properties throughout the resource; and ò evaluation of the behaviour of the coal during processing. This has involved the conduct of an extensive borehole drilling program, backed by geological modelling and material characterisation (chemical, physico-chemical and petrological). Evaluation of the behaviour of the coal during processing has ranged from theoretical modelling, laboratory-scale investigations through to pilot scale and full-scale tests. Until recently, the bulk of the work was directed at evaluating the behaviour of the coal for existing pulverised fuel (pf) firing/steam boiler technology and a high level of understanding has been developed of both the coal resource and its behaviour within these systems. More recent efforts have been directed towards the evaluation of new technologies directed towards cheaper and more efficient power generation using this coal. Loy Yang coal has been evaluated in the following technologies: ò Hydrothermal dewatering/direct coal-fired gas turbine; ò Steam fluidised bed drying; ò Solar drying/densification; ò Briquetting; and ò Gasification.

"Mineralization at the Main zone of the Clarence Stream gold deposit in southwestern New Brunswick occurs within a parallel series of quartz veins that occupy a NE-trending, steeply north-dipping, brittle-ductile shear zone related to the nearby terrane-bounding Sawyer Brook fault. This deformation zone cuts volcaniclastic sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Silurian Waweig Formation, and is intruded by mantle-derived East Branch Brook gabbroic dikes and a number of felsic dikes. Intermittent shear-zone reactivation during local magmatic activity induced heterogeneous deformation and alteration of the country rocks and dikes. The terminal phase of shearing is associated with narrow pegmatite-aplite dikes that grade laterally into granophyric granite, and into an auriferous quartz vein. Gold, aurostibite, and gold-antimony intergrowths, predominantly with vein quartz, are associated with a low ƒO2 sulfide mineral assemblage (pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, and berthierite) that has a sulfur isotopic signature consistent with a magmatic source. Gold saturation and deposition occurred episodically between 300° and 360°C at low activity of sulfur, predominantly in response to pressure reduction during brittle failure combined with the effects of decreasing temperature and sulfidation reactions during fluid-wall-rock interaction. Geochronological studies demonstrate that the timing of the emplacement of the pegmatite-aplite dikes and associated auriferous veins overlap with that of the Early Devonian Magaguadavic granite. Moreover, the composition of the dikes is consistent with their derivation from this granite as late fractionates. The Main zone of the Clarence Stream deposit is therefore interpreted to be intrusion-related, with the Magaguadavic granite being the ultimate source of the gold-bearing fluids. La minéralisation de la zone principale du gisement aurifère de Clarence Stream dans le sud-ouest du Nouveau Brunswick occupe une série de veines de quartz parallèles dans une zone de cisaillement fragile-ductile de direction NE et à pendage abrupt vers le nord apparentée à la faille de Sawyer Brook avoisinante qui délimite deux terranes. Cette zone de déformation recoupe les roches volcaniclastiques et volcaniques de la Formation de Waweig d’âge Silurien et est recoupée par les dykes de gabbro d’East Branch Brook, d’origine mantellique, ainsi que par divers dykes felsiques. La réactivation intermittente de la zone de cisaillement durant l’activité magmatique locale a entraîné la déformation et l’altération hétérogènes des dykes et de l’encaissant. L’or, l’aurostibite et les intercroissances d’or et d’antimoine principalement associées aux veines de quartz sont associés à un assemblage minéral de sulfures à faible ƒO2 (pyrrhotite, arsénopyrite et berthierite) présentant une signature isotopique du souffre compatible avec une source magmatique. La saturation en or et la précipitation a eu lieu épisodiquement entre 300° et 350°C dans des conditions de faible activité de souffre, principalement en réponse à la baisse de pression durant la rupture fragile ainsi qu’aux effets de la baisse de température et aux réactions de sulfuration durant l’interaction entre le fluide et l’encaissant. Les études géochronologiques indiquent que l’âge de la mise en place des dykes de pegmatite-aplite et des veines aurifères qui leur sont associées coïncide avec le granite de Magaguadavic, d’âge Dévonien Précoce. De plus, la composition des dykes est compatible avec une origine provenant de ce granite sous la forme de phases fractionnées tardives. Le gisement principale (Main zone) de Clarence Stream est ainsi considéré comme étant associé aux intrusions, le granite de Magaguadavic étant la source ultime des fluides aurifères."

"Recovery of mineralized coarse particles is notoriously low in conventional concentrators that treat copper porphyry ores. The application of coarse particle flotation techniques has the potential to achieve comparable metallurgical performance at significantly coarser primary grind sizings. ALS Metallurgy has been conducting both internal research and commercial test programs to investigate the potential of Eriez HydroFloatTM technology on copper sulphide ores. Test data indicates that significant improvements in the recovery of copper sulphide bearing particles between 200µm to 850µm can be achieved using Hydrofloat technology compared to conventional flotation techniques. This paper summarizes the results from a selection of test programs that includes recovery by size data from both conventional flotation and HydroFloatTM tests. An explanation of the apparatus and test procedure will be given. Mineralogical analyses of the test products and characteristics that limit metallurgical performance will be discussed.Description of Apparatus and Test ProtocolThe HydroFloatTM laboratory cell is a clear plastic column with an internal diameter of 14 cm. Water and air are introduced to the cell through a circular manifold located in the lower portion of the cell. The cell has a conical bottom which directs slurry to a pinch valve that controls the discharge of tailings. Feed solids are introduced to the upper portion of the cell in slurry form. The cell is operated in a manner such that the manifold water creates a teeter bed zone of suspended solids in the middle portion of the cell. Tailings exit the bottom of the cell at a high pulp density, and most of the introduced water overflows the top of the column and is collected in a launder. Particles with a hydrophobic surface may attach to air bubbles that percolate through the teeter bed, rendering them sufficiently buoyant to be transported to the overflow launder.Three significant features of this arrangement enhance the potential to recover coarse, low grade particles by flotation techniques. Firstly, the hindered settling conditions created by the rising column of water allow coarse particles to become buoyant once attached to a modest sized air bubble. Secondly, the flow conditions within the cell are relatively quiescent compared to a conventional flotation cell that utilizes an agitator. This allows particles that have limited hydrophobic portions of their surface, due to a low content of exposed sulphide mineral, to maintain a somewhat fragile attachment to air bubbles long enough for successful recovery to the overflow. Finally, the absence of a froth phase at the top of the cell allows particles attached to air bubbles to immediately exit the vessel, reducing the potential to drop back into the pulp phase as bubbles burst or coalesce."

Fan applications in the mining industry have changed during the last 70 years. In 1922, J.R. Robinson authored a technical volume entitled Practical Mine Ventilation. At that time, atmospheric control had only recently shifted from natural to mechanical. The large, mechanical draft fans that were used then were centrifugal. The fans ran at low speeds, about300 rpm. Most were steam-engine driven. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, mines became larger, increasing the pressure and volume requirements of the fan equipment. Axial fans were designed to run at much higher speeds (710 to 880 rpm) and were driven by electric motors. They were also smaller and less expensive to install than the cumbersome centrifugal units. However, changes in mining have resulted in progressively higher static-pressure requirements. So centrifugal fans are once again proving to be a good choice.

A number of studies have suggested that microscale asperities enhance bubble-particle attachment efficiency; however, in practice the roughening of particulate surfaces can also lead to a decrease in flotation. In the present investigation, it is proposed that nanoscale asperities may be partially responsible for this phenomenon. It is suggested that as inter-asperity separation distances are reduced capillary effects are enhanced leading to the formation of stable liquid domains, which adversely impact bubble-particle adhesion. In addition, obstruction of surfactant self-assembly may occur, further limiting flotation.

In 1976 the Pitjantjatjara Council was established under the Associations Incorporation Act 1985 (SA), for the initial purpose of organising and bringing together three similar Indigenous groups. These members of the Pitjantjatjara Council of Central Australia were demanding land rights and to legally protect their traditional lands. The Land Rights movement was more focused on the South Australian Government that became more receptive to the general notion that Aboriginal freehold land could be attainable.For almost five years, Pitjantjatjara CouncilÆs intense negotiations took place with the Dunstan and Tonkin Governments culminating in the final passage of legislation by 1981. A bi-partisan approach by Government and opposition applauded by all South Australians for its mature and socially responsible actions, in line with the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth). Despite the similarities between South Australian and the Northern Territory Land Rights legislation, there still remains one obvious distinction. In the Northern Territory case, its legislation established æLand CouncilsÆ as statutory authorities that are responsible for the management and use of designated Aboriginal lands. On the other hand, South Australian legislation fails to include any reference to æLand CouncilsÆ as defined in the Northern Territory Act. The intention of establishing such æLand CouncilsÆ in the Northern Territory was, and is to provide legal, anthropological and other expect advisers that respond to the wishes and opinions of Traditional Aboriginal Owners. Negotiations between mining companies and Land Councils, will, after the granting of mining leases, monies are then transferred to those Councils being a percentage of royalty entitlements. While the Pitjantjatjara Land Rights Act 1981 (SA) (Act) does provide royalty arrangements to Anangu Pitjantjatjara (AP), a body corporate pursuant to the Act as a Landholding Body (and not as a æLand CouncilÆ), it does not provide any royalty payments for the legal and anthropological services by the Pitjantjatjara Council for providing essentially similar services as the Northern Territory Land Councils. The limited services by AP do provide complimentary services from other organisations û including the Pitjantjatjara Council. There are approximately 4000 Anangu members who reside on AP Lands and more than 1000 other Anangu members live near AP Lands in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. These people are defined as APÆs æTraditional OwnersÆ by virtue of their affiliation to portions of AP Lands. As a result, the depth and understanding of spiritual beliefs and customs are strongly present as it relates to the whole of the Lands. Most of these members reside at permanent communities that spread unevenly about the northern and south-western parts of AP Lands. In addition, there are numerous æHomelandsÆ where families and extended families have establish homes, with electricity and water supplies on those Traditional Lands (see Appendix 1 and 2 of this paper depicting the map showing AP Lands and also showing stunning photographs taken during late last year). All roads and airstrips are unsealed between communities and Homelands and the essential services to all communities are limited and costly to provide, and require continuous upgrading. Capital expenditure on infrastructure is sorely needed and alarming levels of unemployment is of serious concern. Tjilpi (older) Anangu members have continually discuss the urgency to provide employment and education for the future of their children and grandchildren while balancing the needs of maintaining cultural and spiritual considerations. It is thus a growing realisation by many Traditional Owners that long-term benefits occur as a result of exploration and production of oil or minerals. There are promising results from Primary Industry and Resources of South AustraliaÆs (PIRSA) Aero-magnetic Surveys on the Musgrave and Mann Ranges and soon to be completed surveys of the remaining southern half of AP Lands (see Appendix 3). PIRSA and mining companies û such as Rio Tinto Exploration Pty Ltd and Delta Gold NL û have been more conscious of the necessity for improving the dissemination of information to Traditional Owners and to AP members. With recent findings of large nickel deposits just over the border in Western Australia, there is a strong indication that discoveries may occur on AP Lands as similar geological information is present on the east Musgrave Block. Consequently there are concerted efforts by the legal and anthropological services of the Pitjantjatjara Council to arrange Workshops and Summit meeting to give extra information û particularly information concerning the true effect of large-scale mining operations û to members to properly consider these proposals. Pitjantjatjara Council will play a major role in any decisions effecting Traditional Owners and AP, and will ensure orderly and professional services when dealing with legal, cultural and sensitive matters. This paper addresses the historical and current relationship between Pitjantjatjara Council and AP, with an emphasis on mining operations on AP Lands. It argues that future economic and social development on AP Lands hinge predominantly on the legal recognition of the Pitjantjatjara Council for its ongoing role, responsibilities and protection afforded to AP and its Traditional Owners.

This paper explains the politics of mine nationalization in contemporary South Africa. Nationalization and privatization typically occur in the oil, mineral resources, and state utilities sectors, and they tend to follow one another in a long-term cyclical pattern. The paper explains why the current international environment has encouraged demands for nationalization and other forms of ?resource nationalism? in the South African minerals sector. It goes on to describe how the resurgence of resource nationalism has been influenced by internal factional politics in the African National Congress. It concludes that nationalization is unlikely to be the outcome of current policy deliberations within the ANC.
