The United States has never attained importance as a producer of asbestos, the domestic output being only 1 to 3 percent of the quantity required to supply raw material for its extensive asbestos-product manu- facturing industries. Production is centered in four principal countries-- Canada, Rhodesia, Union of South Africa, and the Soviet Union. Since asbestos first became an important commercial commodity the Province of Quebec, Canada, has led in tonnage produced, but a large proportion of the output of this province is shorter, nonspinning grades. Since 1916 the Union of South Africa and Rhodesia have become increasingly important as sources of the higher-grade spinning fibers. Before the World War Russia ranked next to Canada as a producer of asbestos, but during the revolution- ary period the industry in that country was almost at a standstill. In 1926, however, activity was revived, and each year since then production and exports have increased greatly. Minor quantities of asbestos are produced in Cyprus; Australia, Finland, and several other countries. Chrysotile is the leading product in all the producing countries, but substantial quantities of both blue (crocidolite) and brown (amosite) asbestos also are produced in the Union of South Africa. Minor quantities of anthophyllite and similar amphibole varieties are mined in the United States, Italy, Bulgaria, Finland, and several other countries.

The Critchfield manganese deposit, Huntingdon County, Pa., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in October 1942. Iron ore was mined from an open cut just southeast of the manganese deposit about 80 years ago. The Critchfield Sand & Feldspar Co. was operating (1942) a clay-mining and beneficiation plant northeast of the manganese deposit. The Bureau completed six rotary bucket-drill holes and three hand-auger holes, aggregating 370 feet on the deposit. This report describes the work performed and presents the results obtained.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) constructed four passive biochemical reactor systems (BCRs) to treat mining influenced water (MIW) in the Bunker Hill Superfund area near Coeur D?Alene, Idaho between 2002 and 2003. Initially, the BCRs operated very effectively. However, in the past couple of years, the zinc removal effectiveness of the four BLM BCRs has declined [1]. The central objective of this study was to characterize the microbial communities and substrate present within the BLM BCRs and to use these factors to propose strategies to promote sustained sulfate reduction levels. Microbial communities were characterized by quantifying total bacteria and sulfate reducing species. Substrate was characterized by quantifying the percent organic, acid soluble organic, acid insoluble organic, and bioavailable material within the BCR. The results suggest the depletion of bioavailable organic substrates is the primary cause of the decline in zinc removal and not the microbial community structure. The ability to assess the amount of bioavailable organic substrate and microbial community is important to the understanding of the sulfate reducing capacity of the BLM BCRs and developing strategies to facilitate performance enhancement of the current BLM BCRs. The characterization of organic substrate and microbial community structure are also important to improving design of future passive treatment systems for mining influenced waters.

As inclusões exercem um papel fundamental na lingotabilidade dos aços produzidos em lingotamento contínuo. É conhecido na literatura o efeito da composição das inclusões na formação de obstruções em válvulas submersas. Contudo, um problema também recorrente no ambiente industrial é o desgaste dos tampões e válvulas submersas do distribuidor, que impede o controle de fluxo de aço para os moldes. O presente trabalho visa avaliar a influência da composição das inclusões na taxa de desgaste de tampão. Foram avaliadas inclusões de aços acalmados ao Si-Mn em corridas que apresentaram diferentes valores de desgaste de tampão. A partir dos resultados obtidos foi possível concluir que a taxa de desgaste de tampão é consideravelmente dependente do teor de MnO das inclusões e que um maior teor de Al2O3 pode contribuir também para reduzir o desgaste.

A two-inch diameter probe containing an intrinsic germanium detector, a canister-type solid cryogen cooling system, cooled FET preamplifier, linear amplifier, high voltage supply, analog-digital converter, microprocessor, buffer memory, bidirectional cable link, and all power supplies has been designed, assembled and tested. A surface support vehicle was designed, built and outfitted. A mini-computer system was constructed and preliminary software developed and tested. A special handling system for a Cf-252 neutron source was designed and has been ordered. The entire system (less the neutron source) is ready for its first field tests. Lab description of the system is presented.

Coal spontaneous combustion is one of the disasters occurring in underground coal mines. As a typical case, the spontaneous combustion of broken coal left in the longwall gobs often happen which could greatly interrupt the normal mining production. Such concealed thermal event is featured as rapid development and difficulty in locating “hot” spots. If such spontaneous combustion fails to be timely prevented and controlled, a large amount of toxic gases (mainly CO) and smoke could flow and diffuse in the underground working sections, which could present safety hazards for coal miners. In this paper, based on an coal spontaneous combustion event happened in a Chinese gassy mine, the fire ratios derived from the gas composition data obtained through the tube bundle mine atmospheric monitoring system are used in determining the fire status. A comprehensive and collaborative fire extinguishing effort including inert gas injection, underground pressure balance, and sealing enhancement are made to control the fire progress. Simultaneously, the effects of such works to control the spontaneous combustion event have also been quantified using the fire ratios to justify again. Finally, the danger of coal spontaneous combustion in gob is eliminated, and the longwall panel is successfully re-opened for normal production.

It can travel short distances or thousands of miles, picking up moisture, freezing, or drying. When the coal is received at the power plant, environmental problems with fugitive dust and further handling problems can arise.

The results revealed that the pozzolanic activity of the gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases improved by mechanical activation. Under the same activation conditions, the activated mica powders possessed the highest pozzolanic activity index, followed by the activated feldspar, and the activated quartz exhibited the lowest pozzolanic activity index. The addition of calcium oxide promoted the formation of amorphous C–(A)–S–H gel for all paste samples, and stratlingite and hydrotalcite were observed in calcium oxide activated mica paste. The addition of natural anhydrite promoted the formation of ettringite for the pastes of calcium oxide activated aluminosilicates materials (gold mine tailings, mica, and feldspar). Furthermore, the pozzolanic activity indexes of the mechanically activated gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases were tested to be qualified for use as supplementary cementitious material in cement. This paper provided an innovative approach for recycling gold mine tailings as supplementary cementitious materials in cement, which would be environmentally friendly and cost-effective. A extração de alumina por digestão ocorre em meio reacional entre a pasta de bauxita e licor cáustico aquecido. Este aquecimento ocorre em uma série de trocadores de calor, que utilizam vapor saturado produzido em caldeiras de gás natural. Aproximadamente vinte minutos após a passagem pelos trocadores, o licor alimenta o reator e a mistura entre este fluido quente e a pasta fria deve atingir uma temperatura pré-definida de digestão. O controlador tradicional não era capaz de integrar o circuito entre os produtores e consumidores de vapor, por causa do deadtime do processo que gera a necessidade de um modelo robusto para ser acoplado à lógica de PID, mais a questão da não-linearidade do processo de transferência de calor. Este artigo apresenta a metodologia e os resultados de uma aplicação de tecnologia baseada em lógica Fuzzy em trocadores de calor para controle da temperatura reacional. A ferramenta do projeto é uma plataforma de controle avançado que não necessita de modelos fenomenológicos e é capaz de lidar com sistemas não-lineares. A média da temperatura de digestão ficou 0,4°C mais próxima do setpoint e a variabilidade reduziu em 61%, o que permitiu a redução em 3,2% no consumo específico de vapor.

This paper describes the scientific data acquisition, data interpretation, and sophisticated 3-dimensional modeling processes of an ongoing gas well stability research program by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Results from the NIOSH field instrumentation programs and the parallel 3-dimensional numerical modeling programs indicate that overburden depth, overburden geology, surface topographic relief, strata dip of the coal measure rocks, and casing cementing alternatives are the dominant factors affecting longwall-induced subsurface deformations and gas well casing stresses. Topographic relief could produce localized longwall-induced deformations if weak-to-strong rock interfaces are present near the bottom of stream valleys. Strata dip has significant impact on longwall-induced subsurface deformations. Cementing alternatives are found to have significant impacts on longwall-induced deformations and gas well casing stresses.

Since the discovery of the first black smoker on the East Pacific Rise in 1977 (Francheteau, et al., 1979), the hydrothermal vents, now called seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) deposits, have generated great interest in the geological community, especially regarding their formation and composition. SMS deposits are areas of hard substratum, with high base metal and sulphides content, that form through hydrothermal circulation and are commonly found at hydrothermal vent sites. The high base metal (Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb), sulphur-rich mineral content has interested mining companies, due to their potentially high economic value. Currently, the known SMS deposits do not have the same dimensions as the massive sulphides (MS) found on land (covering just 10s to 100s m2) and pose significant mining challenges (being located in water depths between 800 m and 6000 m), meaning that they do not appear to be economically exploitable at present. However, these deep-sea mineral resources could be important targets in the near future, particularly with our ever-increasing demand for base metals. A key aim of the European Union-funded Blue Mining project is to develop techniques to robustly quantify SMS deposits dimensions (both surface expression and subsurface extent) and therefore assessing the suitability of SMS deposits for future economically viable and environmentally clean deep-sea mining operations.

"INTRODUCTION For many generations the Indian tribes of the southwestern deserts knew of the thermal springs of the Coso District in southwestern Inyo County, Calif. Belief in the reputedly healing qualities of the waters and muds of the area was widespread. F. J. Sanders discovered mercury in the siliceous sinter around the hot springs while he was exploiting the district as a health resort. In searching for new domestic sources of supply of strategic minerals, authorized under the Strategic Materials Act, 3/,the Geological Survey 4/ first examined the deposits, which were drilled and sampled by the Bureau of Mines in the spring of 1941.The deposits investigated comprised three units known, respectively, as The Devils Kitchen, Nicol, and Wheeler. Most of the work was done at the first two.Of particular interest in the Bureau's work on the project was the adaptation and use of the bucket drill as a tool for sampling shallow, soft ore deposit."

During the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the Western United States, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected 2-ton samples from five manganese properties near Golconda, Nev. Extensive laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of these ores to standard ore-dressing methods of concentration. The Tom Major property, one of those sampled, is situated 12-1/2 miles south of Golconda, Humboldt County, Nev. The deposit is described as a bed about 5 feet thick in a thinly bedded shale and dolomite formation. The sample tested was obtained from the manganese bed, but the examining engineer reported: "The mining of an appreciable tonnage at reasonable cost would perhaps cut in half the grade represented by the sample."

This report describes the exploration work done in 1941 in connection with the search for strategic minerals as authorized by the Strategic Materials Act approved by the President on June 7, 1939. It deals with the various manganese deposits and showings in the Tombstone mining district of Cochise County, Ariz. The exploration project comprised a study of the geology, mapping of the areas, and exploration of various mines and deposits by sampling old drifts, crosscuts, and scopes, supplemented by diamond drilling from underground stations. The Federal Government's manganese-purchasing programs have revived interest in occurrences such as the scattered deposits near Tombstone. Because of this, the Bureau of Mines project report on the Tombstone district, prepared originally in 1941 but not published, has been revised and now is being made public.

A tese defendida neste trabalho – a possibilidade de se produzir grande valor a partir da abundância de dados de medição de consumo, de produção e de estados dos equipamentos, tipicamente encontrada em ambientes industriais – é demonstrada através do caso concreto da empresa Aperam South America, em sua planta de Timóteo, MG. Os resultados apresentados neste trabalho ilustram, qualitativamente, os potenciais retornos apurados no desenvolvimento de um sistema com as características descritas.

No panorama atual da coqueificação há uma necessidade comum de aumentar o uso de carvão de menor qualidade, principalmente devido ao alto custo e decrescente disponibilidade de carvões coqueificáveis de primeira linha. Neste cenário, uma forma de melhorar a qualidade do coque é através do controle de tamanho de partículas de carvões e misturas. A granulometria dos carvões pode alterar sua petrografia e propriedades reológicas, podendo ser utilizada de forma benéfica. O presente trabalho é uma primeira parte de um estudo de longo prazo e tem como objetivo avaliar os efeitos de preparação de carvão em suas propriedades. Para esse fim, dois carvões coqueificáveis e uma mistura foram selecionadas e caracterizadas em diferentes faixas de tamanho de partícula. Os carvões e suas frações granulométricas foram caracterizadas por análise imediata, petrografia, fluidez Gieseler e índice de inchamento livre. Os resultados demonstraram que as frações granulométricas dos carvões apresentam diferentes propriedades (cinzas, matéria volátil, composição maceral, fluidez e FSI) de acordo com o tamanho de partícula estudado. Além disso, discutiu-se o motivo por trás das diferenças observadas.

Foi fabricada uma matriz hipoeutética de Al-2%Ni e adicionado nela concentrações de 0,5; 1,0; e 1,5 % de nanotubos de carbono de paredes múltiplas (NTCPM). A fabricação do material estudado aconteceu por fundição e resfriamento unidirecional brusco originado grãos predominantemente colunares. Os ensaios mecânicos mostram que concentrações maiores de nanotubo na matriz provocam acréscimo na propriedade mecânica e que em áreas mais distante da base extratora de calor a microdureza aumenta. Na amostra que contém 1,5% de nanotubos o valor da microdureza em áreas da posição P1 distante 5 mm da interface metal/molde é aproximadamente de 120 HV, já em áreas da posição P5 distante 45 mm, se aproxima de 210 HV. A resistência a tração é influenciada pela adição de NTC. A matriz possui uma resistência a tração de 64 Mpa, enquanto que a adição de 1,5% de NTC eleva esse valor para 135 MPa.

Oxygen and nitrogen cause strain aging in electrorefined vanadium, as evidenced by maxima in yield and tensile strengths and by Snoek internal friction peaks. Alloys containing up to 0.22 percent oxygen and 0.11 percent nitrogen were investigated. Tensile strengths of oxygen-and nitrogen-containing alloys were 66,000 and 68,000 psi at 300° to 400° C, compared with 53,000 and 62,000 psi, respectively, at room temperature. Total elongation decreases to about 7 percent at the temperature of maximum strength. At 600° C, strain aging is not evident. Based on interstitial contents calculated from internal friction measurement, the increases in strength caused by nitrogen and oxygen were 440,000 psi per weight-percent nitrogen and 260,000 psi per weight-percent oxygen. Application of the Schoeck and Seeger treatment to the Snoek effect in these systems results in a calculated lattice distortion of 0.24 and 0.15 caused by the presence of an interstitial nitrogen or oxygen atom, respectively. Alloys containing boron or carbon were also investigated. Both elements refine the grain size but have no other effect because of their low solubility in vanadium.

Optimum design of a structure obviously requires a thorough knowledge of the materials to be utilized in its construction. When the structure is a tunnel, a most important element in its design and construction is the geology. As a tunnel may be many miles in length and at depths of hundreds or thousands of feet, we face a real problem to meet the needs of the designer and builder. How can we determine the properties of our construction materials in this situation? Engineering geology has had a formidable challenge to meet the requirements of conventional excavation methods; the advent of machine methods for rapid excavation compounds the requirements for more detailed and more precise geological knowledge of the tunnel site. This chapter will discuss the means now at our disposal to meet the challenge to produce the required data on the tunnel site in the preconstruction stage. Our considerations will be directed towards construction of a free-flow tunnel, primarily in fractured rock formations, without any requirements for the rock mechanics type of in-situ tests that might be made for a pressure tunnel or for a large opening for an underground power plant. In essence the investigation must determine: (1) The geologic conditions affecting the type of construction equipment and excavation method of the rock to be broken and removed. (2) The quantities of water and gas to be encountered. (3) The strength and stability of the material surrounding the bore and its need for support and lining. The TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyzer (TIMA), an automated mineralogy system, enables fast and quantitative mineral analyses of rocks, ores, concentrates, tailings, leach residues or smelter products. It combines BSE and EDX analysis for identification and measurement of mineral concentrations, particle size distribution, and liberation/locking parameters. In addition, it can provide bright particle searches for PGM, gold-silver ores, and/or REE. With the newly developed Automated Loading System (AutoLoader), the TIMA has become the world?s first automated mineral analyzer which permits robust, continuous and unattended sample loading. With the AutoLoader (robotics) system, the TIMA has emerged as a powerful plant support instrument. It increases the sample throughput, minimizes manual labor and enables 24/7 operations. As such, it can be used in daily, continuous mineralogy for mine geology/ore control, concentrators, leach operations, and smelter support. It will also increase the capabilities of technical service centers for mining companies, commercial laboratories, large drilling programs or pilot test campaigns. In combination with a highly automated sample preparation lab (sizing, potting and polishing), TIMA technology can establish high-throughput and fast-turnaround automated mineralogy lab modules for mine-site production support.
