"Abstract - The 12.1 Mt Brunswick No. 6 Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag massive sulfide deposit (New Brunswick, Canada) lies between two subaqueous felsic volcanic formations near the base of the Middle Ordovician Tetagouche Group. The footwall comprises rhyodacitic pyroclastic rocks (Nepisiguit Falls Formation), whereas the hanging wall comprises a sequence of rhyolitic flows, breccias, and hyaloclastites (Flat Landing Brook Formation), with an age difference of less than 3 m.y. The Brunswick No. 6 deposit is a proximal autochthonous deposit with a well-zoned massive sulfide body and a basal Cu zone that, at depth, develops into a stockwork stringer sulfide (feeder) system. The massive sulfides are capped sharply by a layered magnetite-chert unit that extends regionally beyond the deposit. The deposit has a keel shape (sheath) formed by the F1F2 interference pattern. The heterogeneous ductile deformation and upper greenschist-grade regional metamorphism has transposed many of the epigenetic stockwork structures and alteration within the host sequence. Hydrothermal alteration is much more extensive, both vertically and laterally, in the footwall (a few 100 m) than in the hanging wall (<100 m). Anomalies farther up in the hanging wall sequence seem to be associated with independent alteration systems related to the rhyolite domes. The least-altered footwall units exhibit keratophyric alteration (albite or adularia) and weak Mg enrichment (chlorite). More intense micaceous (sericite and Mg-rich chlorite) alteration occurs around the footwall sequence. The transposed stockwork stringer sulfides are typically composed of Fe-rich chlorite (± sericite, ± silica) with pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and sphalerite. The (Fe2O3T+MgO)/(Na2O+K2O) and base metal alteration indices are the best practical lithogeochemical vectoring tools at this deposit. L’altération hydrothermale est beaucoup plus importante, tant verticalement qu’horizontalement, dans le mur (quelques 100 m) que dans le toit (<100 m). Les anomalies situées plus haut dans le mur semblent être reliées à des systèmes d’altération indépendants associés aux dômes de rhyolite. Les unités les moins altérées du mur une altération kératophyrique (en albite ou en adulaire) ainsi qu’un faible enrichissement en Mg (chlorite). Une altération en mica (séricite et chlorite magnésienne) plus intense est présente autour de la séquence du mur. Les sulfures du stockwork de filonnets transposés consistent typiquement en chlorite ferrifère (± séricite, ± silice) accompagnée de pyrite, de pyrrhotite, de chalcopyrite, d’arsénopyrite et de sphalérite. L’indice d’altération (Fe2O3T+MgO)/(Na2O+K2O) et l’indice des métaux usuels sont les outils d’exploration les plus appropriés dans ce gisement."

A partir desse desafio, o grupo de melhoria contínua Perfuração desenvolveu um projeto que visa redução de custo com hastes para perfuratrizes de grande porte. A metodologia aplicada para elaboração do projeto foi o PDCA, onde foi desenvolvido uma forma de reaproveitar o corpo da haste, que evita o descarte precoce da peça, otimizando a vida útil e consequentemente reduzindo o custo com materiais de desgaste de perfuração.

This paper investigates the adequacy of current gas monitoring techniques to adequately detect spontaneous combustion in underground coalmines. Despite being in the 21st century spontaneous combustion continues to occur in underground coalmines sometimes being detected only at a very advanced stage. Control of the incident is often then very expensive and time consuming. The adequacy needs to be assessed not only from the point of view of the analysis technique be it tube bundle, gas chromatograph or real time sensor but also the number, location and sampling frequency of the monitoring locations. Recommendations are made to optimise monitoring processes and recognise limitations of current techniques.

THE NATURE AND SCOPE OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE The two and a half decades since World War II have witnessed an unprecedented growth international commerce The end of the war found the world economy seriously crippled. Many countries had suffered severe war damage; international trade was disrupted and nations had to resort to exchange controls and bilateral trading arrangements. The ever increasing demand on land use has led to large areas of land being considered for development, which because of past mining activities are covered by substantial depths of fill materials. This paper examines the problem faced with the development of land infilled with open cast mining backfill, in predicting the behaviour of the fill upon development. To be able to design foundations suitable to withstand the movements that occur within open cast backfills or design a backfilling operation that produces land suitable for a proposed after development, a means of predicting backfill settlement is required. Factors critical to this prediction are the timing of backfilling operations, the compactive state of the backfill and the inundation of the backfill. The analysis of a considerable quantity of data collected from the monitoring of backfilling operations and backfill movement at a range of open cast coal sites located within the UK has given the authors a better understanding of how open cast backfills behave in terms of long-term creep settlement, collapse settlement and how these are effected by backfill scheduling. This knowledge has been encoded into a program running under Microsoft Windows that enables a user to make settlement predictions for a point, a given section or area or for the whole site. Differential settlements, critical to any development design, can also be determined between any two points taking into consideration the heterogeneous nature of open cast backfills. The program was tested with data from an open cast coal site in the UK. Compaction monitoring during the placement of the backfill material enabled a model of the backfill to be constructed taking into account backfill properties and scheduling. This model, taken as input into the program, enabled future backfill settlement predictions to be made. A comparison is given between these results and actual settlements obtained from a short-term settlement monitoring scheme.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating a dewatering technique for coal-clay waste that uses a flocculant, polyethylene oxide (PEO). This flocculant forms strong stable flocs that can be dewatered on a static screen. A field test unit (FTU) using this technique was operated at approximately 400 gal/min, using a waste stream from the flotation circuit of a coal preparation plant. Consolidated coal-clay material con-taining 55 to 60 pct solids was produced when the flotation circuit slurries of 2.7 to 8 pct solids were treated with 0.1 to 0.3 Ib PEO per ton of solids. The FTU was also operated at 64.5 and 87.5 gal/min using a portion of the underflow slurry from the preparation plant&apos;s thickener. Consolidated coal-clay material containing 55 to 60 pct solids was produced when the thickener underflow slurries of 19 to 24 pct solids were treated with 0.08 to 0.2 Ib PEO per ton of solids. PED-treated materials continued to dewater when placed in a pit.

World wide applications for nickel use will be summarized and examples of those uses given. Nickel products are critical to many important aspects of modern society. These products are just as important for modern China as they are in other parts of the world. It is argued that future pattern of nickel use in China should be expected to be very similar to that in the rest of the developed world. Total use of nickel in products in China is already very large. In 2004, it was the largest market for stainless steel (nickel containing) in the world. A survey of Chinese stainless steel applications will be presented. Current high nickel prices have revived speculation about substitution, particularly for nickel containing stainless steels. The presentation will discuss some of the complicating factors that need to be taken into account when considering substitution. These factors are as valid in modern China as they are in other developed economies. Recent substitution efforts and the reaction to them will be examined. The Nickel Institute position regarding appropriate application of the various grades of stainless steel will be discussed. Price-motivated substitution in China, and elsewhere, will occur but it is argued that the extent will probably be limited.

A necessidade de treinamento é uma realidade nas indústrias. A qualificação de operadores é importante para garantir segurança e prevenir perdas econômicas. Nesse contexto, o objetivo desse trabalho é desenvolver e avaliar um simulador de treinamento de operador. O estudo de caso é um moinho vertical, comumente utilizado na indústria de cimento. Nessa direção, passou-se pela construção de um supervisório, pela modelagem e simulação dinâmica de um moinho vertical e, por fim, pela elaboração e execução de um treinamento. Para tal, foram construídos três cenários de situações anormais, além da consideração da operação normal. Ainda em relação à metodologia, treinaram-se dois grupos de alunos com métodos distintos de ensino: o primeiro recebeu apenas um treinamento teórico, através de uma apresentação multimídia; e o segundo, após esse treinamento teórico, recebeu um treinamento prático, ou seja, do tipo aprender fazendo, a partir do contato direto com o simulador de processos. De modo geral, percebeu-se que o contato com a prática possibilitou um maior entendimento da operação do moinho vertical, do grau de dependência entre as variáveis de entrada e de saída, e das variáveis utilizadas para a recuperação do processo à operação normal, contribuindo ainda para uma maior fixação do conhecimento teórico. Esse trabalho é resultado de uma parceria UniversidadeEmpresa, cujas atividades foram desenvolvidas por um grupo de alunos de graduação em Engenharia Química.

Part 1 of this report is concerned with the electric-furnace production of calcium aluminate and iron alloy from a variety of siliceous ferruginous ores of aluminum. The furnacing research was directed, first, to determine the extent of the field in the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 system, in which calcium aluminates with the optimum leaching characteristics are obtained; second, to produce suitable quantities of these aluminate mixtures for pilot-plant leaching tests; third, to investigate the physical chemistry of the reduction reactions during furnacing; and, fourth, to study the economics of the process. The third and fourth steps were not completed. Part 2 comprises another phase of the work and will appear as a second Report of Investigations. It deals with the extraction of metallurgical-grade alumina from the calcium aluminate slag produced in the electric furnace and includes the following steps: leaching, desilicating, precipitating, dewatering, filtering, and washing of the aluminum hydrate. No claim is made that the data are complete, nor has the chronological order of obtaining data been followed. Rather, it is emphasized that additional work is necessary if the full possibilities of the process are to be evaluated. and made available.

For 11 years, under authorization of the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of April 5, 1944 (30 U.S.C. 321-325), and amendments, the Bureau of Mines has carried on an extensive research and development program to establish methods for producing oil from coal and from oil shale. This act was passed by the 78th Congress primarily because of the stress of wartime demands for liquid fuels to supply our armed forces during World War II. The act was progressively extended by the 80th and 81st Congresses, as later peace-time demand for oil and oil products continued to increase.

On April 21, 1980 the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW) submitted a petition urging the revision of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure limit to radon daughters in underground mines. This petition asks for: 1. Annual worker exposure to be lowered from the current 4 WLM/year to 0.7 WLM/year; 2. Full economic protection for workers whose exposure exceeds the proposed 0.7 WLM/ year; and 3. The primary means of lowering workers&apos; radiation exposures shall be environmental controls. I will present the scientific rationale for the lower standard requested in our petition to the Department of Labor. [1. Radiation Exposures to Uranium Miners] Two types of radiation exposures are present in the environment of uranium mines: A. [External Exposure] to gamma sources which until 1978 was considered as negligible compared with internal alpha radiation. R. E. Utting (1), in an investigation of three Canadian uranium mines, found levels of exposures adding to an annual dose equivalent of 3 rems (30 mSv)/year. He concluded that gamma dosages may be a major fraction of the maximum permissible dose for many individual miners. The U.S. experience has shown that there is significant gamma exposure in U.S. uranium mines and, therefore, it could contribute to the total radiation exposure to the lungs in combination with internal alpha radiation. Before ventilation improvements in uranium mines, the contribution of external radiation to total lung dosage was relatively small. After improvements in ventilation, the reduction in internal radiation exposure appears to be in 1980 as low as 1/10 of the 1950 dosages. However, ventilation improvements do not affect external gamma radiation. Gamma radiation remains at the same 1950&apos;s level, and it represents today a higher proportion of the total radiation burden to the miner&apos;s lungs. MSHA regulations (57.5-47) state that if gamma exposure is below 2.0 milliroentgens per hour, then workers are not required to wear gamma dosimeters and cummulative gamma radiation records need not be kept. Assuming an exposure of 1.9 milliroentgens per hour per 173 hours/month for 12 months,a miner would accumulate a dose from external radiation of 3.9 rems/ year. This dosage would, of course, go unrecorded. MSHA, therefore, should consider a downward revision of the external radiation permissible exposure limit of 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. MSHA should make clear that this exposure level, when added to the internal exposure, does not make for sound health physics -even though the measured current levels do not approach 2.0 milliroentgens/hour. B. [Internal Exposure] to alpha radiation is still the larger contributor to lung irradiation in uranium miners. The target organ is still the lung. The parameters to be considered in determining the biological radiation load appear in Table I for radon daughters present in the upper respiratory tract (URT). As elevadas taxas de encruamento nos estágios iniciais de deformação plástica observadas para os aços bifásicos constituem uma das principais características que os habilita para aplicação em componentes estruturais na indústria de automóveis. Neste trabalho foi analisada influência de tratamentos intercríticos com aquecimento em temperaturas diversas, seguido de resfriamento brusco, no comportamento em termos de encruamento de um aço bifásico, por meio de dois métodos distintos de determinação do expoente de encruamento. Observou-se que a elevação da temperatura intercrítica influenciou de modo a reduzir o valor do expoente de encruamento, dado que o aumento da temperatura reflete a elevação do percentual de martensita na microestrutura do aço. Além disso, para as diferentes abordagens aplicadas para o cálculo dos valores de n, verificou-se que por meio da técnica de linearização da curva tensão versus deformação foram obtidos valores superiores do expoente de encruamento quando comparada à abordagem utilizando o critério da estricção.

O desafio de se extrair conhecimento prático das enormes massas de dados disponibilizadas pelos sistemas de informação e automação nas indústrias já vem sendo discutido e enfrentado há anos. Neste contexto, a aplicação de técnicas de analítica avançada se apresenta como uma solução poderosa, capaz de mudar a operação dos processos industriais. Especificamente, a área de analítica preditiva é constantemente considerada como uma nova revolução para a indústria. Combinando técnicas como análise estatística, mineração de dados, “big data”, aprendizado de máquina e inteligência artificial, a analítica preditiva gera modelos a partir de dados históricos com o objetivo de prever condições futuras. Tal predição permite que ações de correção ou otimização possam ser definidas e executadas antecipadamente e com maior precisão, aumentando significativamente a eficiência dos processos, seja em relação a produtividade, custo ou qualidade. Este trabalho apresenta os fundamentos da analítica preditiva e uma aplicação prática na indústria. As técnicas utilizadas podem ser diretamente replicadas nas mais diversas áreas da indústria e para os mais diferentes problemas, evidenciando o forte potencial de expansão esperado para os próximos anos.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 547 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. Of this total, 340 samples were collected during calendar year 1967. The remaining 207 analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting, permission to publish the results were not received until 1967. All samples were collected as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. The Bureau of Mines has conducted this survey in the United States since 1917, and in 1965 it was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 516.4 Nine previous publications have been made to present results of 7,618 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1967. The first three, Bulletins 486,5 576,6 and 6177 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other six

Com a crescente utilização de aços inoxidáveis duplex na indústria petroquímica, química, de celulose e entre outras, motivada em grande parte pelas propriedades mecânicas e de resistência à corrosão apresentadas por estes materiais. Por se tratar de um material com altos teores de elementos de liga e ser composto por duas fases, ferrita e austenita, se faz necessário grandes cuidados na sua soldagem e um aprimoramento dos conhecimentos deste material quando submetido a este processo. Para tal, o presente trabalho denota um estudo da microestrutura de um aço inoxidável duplex após a sua soldagem pelo processo MIG pulsado, sendo aplicada uma energia durante a soldagem de 1,0kJ e adotada uma temperatura entre os passes de soldagem de 150oC. Também foram analisados os percentuais de ferrita e austenita, foi efetuada a contagem de fases do metal base e também da zona afetada pelo calor (ZAC). Foram encontrados na ZAC além da fase austenita secundária, uma fase intermetálica que possivelmente se trata de nitretos de cromo. Apesar do metal base estar com uma proporção ferrita/austenita aproximadamente igual, na ZAC houve um desbalanceamento entre as fases, onde a predominância foi de grãos de ferrita.

JAMES DONALD FORRESTER 32.1-EXAMINATIONS The field examination of a mineral deposit or mining enterprise requires a comprehensive effort to determine all natural and man-made factors bearing upon the problem to be resolved by the investigation. Therefore, the purpose to be served by an examination must be fully understood before the engineer assumes responsibility, and before actual field work starts. A clear understanding facilitates planning the approach to the project for maximum efficiency and thorough acquisition of information. It follows, of course, that the engineer has the necessary knowledge and experience to discharge satisfactorily the professional obligations attending the project. Some studies are in herently more complex than others, and the requirements of the problem are not always the same. Some examinations require the detailed investigation of large operating or nonoperating mines or, possibly, of mining districts; others involve more or less reconnaissance studies; and still others rela¬tively small undeveloped mineral occurrences. Likewise, the primary objective of some analyses may be the evaluation of a mineral deposit or a mining property, whereas in other projects the major objective may be guiding mining or drilling work in the discovery of new or hidden ore bodies and mineral-bearing structures. Thus, the possible range of any given examination may extend in varying degree through one, or more, of the following types of procedures: 32.1.1--GEOGRAPHIC ENVIRONMENT Studies of geographic environment should be made to ascertain the general physical situation in the area under consideration and to identify those correlative factors hearing on the, findings resulting from the field examination. This commonly will include determinations of: A. Location of the field area with respect to the state and county in which it occurs and, if feasible, a record of the township, range and section with reference to the principal meridian, and base line (or lines) that apply. For examinations in foreign countries, or in regions outside the continental United States, it is desirable that the field locality, in each instance, be identified with reference to the boundaries of some form of political entity essentially comparable in character to the divisions used in the United States. B. Distances from existing communities and related service centers, via: 1. Roads, both improved and unimproved. 2. Railroads. 3. Navigable waterways. 4. Airports. C. Topographic relief as it will influence the selection of 1. Pit site or positions of underground mine portals or shaft sites, including dump areas. 2. Mill site, including tailings disposal area.

A multi-stage triaxial procedure has been developed for the enhanced servo controls and feedback systems at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) rock mechanics laboratory. Due to the difficulty of preparing multiple rock specimens for single-stage triaxial tests at different confinements, multi-stage testing provides a huge advantage if only a few samples of coal measure rocks can be prepared from the drill core. A multi-stage test can provide mechanical properties, post-failure properties, and a complete failure envelope for a single specimen. For the multi-stage test procedure, a parameter used to define the slope of the stress-radial strain curve was developed and monitored in real time in order to successfully predict peak strengths at different confining stages. For this paper, multi-stage tests have been conducted on sandstones of varying strengths, including Berea sandstone which has well-documented properties, and fine-grained and coarse sandstone from a western US coal mine. For the tests conducted on the fine-grained sandstone, it was found that the ramp rate was an important factor in the success of obtaining peak strengths during the multi-stage tests. For each rock type, a table including Young?s modulus, Poisson?s ratio, unconfined compressive strength, friction angle, cohesion, residual friction angle, and residual cohesion are reported. The values from these tables have been used as input parameters for projects at NIOSH requiring numerical model input parameters.

La gasificación por plasma es un proceso térmico a alta temperatura en el que los desechos se descomponen en elementos fundamentales y compuestos simples en un entorno anaeróbico. El sistema presentado en este artículo actúa como un digestor al transformar las moléculas de carbono y otras sustancias en compuestos menos contaminantes. Se utilizó una mezcla de cianuro disuelto en agua como muestra de ensayo —procedente de aguas de una mina—, que se sometió al componente radiante de plasma, y se estudió la energía generada actuando sobre la purificación y transformación de las muestras.
