Rejeitos de mineração descartados na forma de polpa possuem, geralmente, grande quantidade de água e reutilizá-la no processo, por meio de operações de desaguamento mais eficientes é de grande importância para a implementação de projetos de menor impacto ambiental. O presente trabalho visa estudar as operações envolvidas no desaguamento de um rejeito de níquel, com o objetivo de principalmente a maximizar a recuperação de água de processo. Para tanto, foram avaliados: a influência da concentração de sólidos, uso e dosagem de floculante, pressão no filtro, o processo de filtração com e sem prensagem e a influência destas variáveis na umidade da torta e na recuperação de água. Os resultados mostraram que quanto maior a dosagem de floculante menor é a recuperação de água na filtragem; por outro lado, quanto maiores a concentração de sólidos e a pressão, maior a recuperação de água. Verificou-se a importância do uso da prensagem para maximizar a recuperação da água contida no sedimento, sendo possível comprovar que o rejeito de níquel floculado e filtrado com ?P de 6 bar com o uso de prensagem promoveu a recuperação de até 77% de água.

Brunswick Mining, employing approximately 1600 employees, is located 40 km south of the city of Bathurst in north eastern New Brunswick. The mine has operated as two lead-zinc operations - the underground mine(No.12) and the open pit mine (No.6). The open pit orebody is presently being' mined by underground methods. It is expected that the No.12 mine will furnish the entire ore supply by the end of 1981. The flotation practice prior to 1971 has been described by Neumann and Schnarr(1) and by Erskine (2). More recently, the current flotation practice has been described by McTavish(3) and deals with some major circuit modifications between 1972 and 1978. The period 1978 to 1980 has seen the completion of. a major flotation cell replacement and expansion program for the No.6 concentrator, and the implementation of computer control in the No. 12 CuPb and Zn flotation circuits.

A metodologia aplicada para alcançar os resultados almejados baseou-se em experimentos realizados com informações de bobinas reais, sendo utilizados softwares distintos para o desenvolvimento do projeto, validando os resultados obtidos através de análises de desempenho, com a correlação entre respostas conhecidas e as obtidas com a utilização da rede neural, assim como, a análise do erro médio quadrático das respostas obtidas com a aplicação, sendo simulados na etapa de treinamento da rede neural ou verificados experimentalmente com a execução da ferramenta desenvolvida.

The Waelz Plant at Taiwan Steel Union Co. Ltd. (TSU) was erected within nine months from September 1, 1998 to May 15, 1999. The nominal capacity of the plant is 50,000 tonnes per year of electric are furnace dust (EAFD). The plant, consisting of material handling, a waelz kiln, a waste gas cleaning system, waelz oxide leaching and waste water treatment, was commissioned within three months from July 1, 1999 until October 12, 1999. The specific problem of the plant is the high chlorine content in the EAFD pellets which is up to 6 %. Lurgi Metallurgie GmbH, Frankfurt, Germany was responsible for the engineering erection and commissioning of the plant.

In open pit mining, it is common that the bottleneck to productivity and profit lies in the truck-shovel mining operation, especially as strip ratios and mining intensity have increased with resource depletion and advances in mining equipment capabilities. This paper outlines a study of truck-shovel productivity using a new proprietary discrete event simulation platform for truck-shovel operations called MineDES. The study will specifically address the issue of whether truck queuing at shovels should be considered productive or not, and how mining engineers can determine the optimal truck fleet size for specific operational configurations.The MineDES simulation platform will be described and illustrated, highlighting the features that make it an appropriate tool for conducting the experiments at the heart of this study. The study encompasses a set of experiments, consisting of a number of simple truck-shovel operational scenarios for a benchmark open pit mining operation, which are simulated using MineDES. Each experiment is designed to highlight different factors, which are most important in calculating the ideal truck fleet size and for understanding the marginal productive impact of each additional truck added to the fleet. The scenarios will principally address the issues of how different types and levels of unscheduled equipment downtime and process variation, combined with the traffic delays/congestion arising in more intense mining operations, will affect productivity. The results of the experiments are interpreted using a simple fit-for-purpose cost and revenue model in order to highlight the indicative cost of over- or under-trucked configurations.The study has found that the optimal fleet size that maximises productivity and value will, in the presence of even small process variation, lead to non-zero trucks queuing at shovels on average. As process variations and unscheduled downtime events increase in the truck-shovel system, the required fleet size to optimise productivity and value increases. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated column flotation for recovery of a high-grade fluorite (CaF2) concentrate and byproduct concentrates from the Fish Creek fluorite deposit in Eureka County, NY. The recovery scheme consisted of (1) grinding the ore to minus 48 mesh, (2) fluorite rougher and cleaner flotation, (3) desliming the rougher fluorite flotation tailings at 20 Jjm, (4) mica flotation, and (5) silicate rougher flotation. Acid-grade fluorspar, mica, free silica (Si02) sand, and low-grade beryl (Be3Al2S~018) concentrate were produced in a 100 lb/h continuous column flotation unit (CCFU). The highest results achieved were %.6-pct CaF2 recovery in a fIrst cleaner concentrate containing 99.7 pct CaF2. Beryl recovery was as high as 92 pct at a grade of 5.3 pct BeO. The silica sand, which assayed 98 pct Si02, was recovered as the rougher beryl flotation tailings. Collector reagent consumption was reduced 45 pct for fluorite and 58 pet for silicate flotation in comparison with bench-scale conventional flotation. All products were signillcantly improved in both grade and recovery over conventional flotation results, and the recovery scheme was simplifIed by removal of several stages of flotation in the fluorite and silicate flotation steps.

The Manus back-arc basin behind the New Britain Trench is one of the major sites of active seafloor hydrothermal vent-fields which are considered to be modern-day analogue of felsic volcanic-hosted polymetallic massive sulfide deposits abundant in ancient geological record. Many of these deposits represent multi-million dollar resources, and yet very little are known about the fundamental processes leading to their formation. In November 2000 January 2001, the PACMANUS hydrothermal system in this region will be targeted by the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 193 to investigate the internal anatomy. A number of observations that suggest that the tectonic, magmatic and hydrothermal processes in the eastern Manus basin spreading center are unusual in that they can not be explained by a simple back-arc opening due to subduction of the New Britain Trench. Geochemistry of submarine volcanoes in the eastern Manus basin, for instance, shows affinity to arc rather than back-arc type volcanoes. Yet these submarine volcanoes lie too faraway from the Benioff-Wadati zone. One hypothesis is that the magmatic and subsequent hydrothermal activity of this region is a direct result of the irregularities in the deep crust and upper mantle structure and that the tectonic process is controlled by the sharp inflection of the New Britain Trench. According to this hypothesis, the two major southeast-trending strike-slip faults in the eastern Manus Basin, Djaul and Weitin Faults, should extend farther down and join to the New Britain Trench. They would form a transform arm of the triple junction with the New Britain Trench southeast of New Britain Island and southwest of Bougainville Island forming the other two arms. A trench-trench-transform triple junction can not be stable over time, and therefore a slight change in the plate velocity may lead to a dramatic change in the configuration of the plate boundaries. If so, the instability of the triple junction may cause large tectonic deformations, such as mantle uplift under the Manus basin due to mantle rupturing by transform faults, and therefore may explain the arc-style volcanism and unusual compositions of hydrothermal deposits in the eastern Manus basin.

O sistema implementado conseguiu melhorar a qualidade de informação para a equipe tornando mais rápida e assertiva a tomada de decisão.

Um grande esforço foi realizado por diversas empresas, visando à melhoria de nosso parque industrial e, nos últimos 10 anos, o nível de investimento no setor foi importante. Este cenário, fez com que novas tecnologias surgissem por aqui, facilitando ao corpo técnico avançar com soluções mais eficazes para carroçarias. A disponibilidade local de todos os estágios da cadeia produtiva, desde a matéria-prima, até a adequação das linhas de manufatura das montadoras, afasta o efeito da variação cambial. A ideia que ficou impregnada no mercado brasileiro, é que novos materiais e tecnologias são caros para nossa região. O que não é verdade. Estudos de caso realizados antes de 2005, incluíam no preço, taxas de câmbio e internação, pois consideravam o produto importado. Com a localização este custo extra reduz. Ações governamentais atuam, hora incentivando localizações, hora definindo objetivos de emissões e segurança. O programa INOVAR AUTO estabelece algumas metas importantes de emissões, percentual de localização e promove o P&D local. Todos estes ingredientes têm auxiliado no aumento da utilização de AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steel) nas estruturas veiculares. Usando os aços de alta resistência como base, temos um crescimento significativo. Em 2001 não passavam de 2% das carrocerias. Em 2008 chegaram a importantes 8%. Atualmente, estão próximo dos 15%.

The pyrite oxidation rate is a process central to both the performance of bio-oxidation heaps, used in the pre-treatment of some refractory gold ores, and to the levels of pollution in acid rock drainage (ARD) from pyritic waste rock dumps. A goal in bio-oxidation heaps is to achieve high oxidation rates in the heap as a whole. In comparison, one way to mitigate the environment impact of ARD, is to reduce the overall oxidation rate in the waste rock dump since pyrite oxidation is the primary pollutant generation process. In both bio-oxidation heaps and waste rock dumps the overall oxidation rate of the pyritic material (the intrinsic oxidation rate) at these sites. Much research has been conducted over the last 40 years or so on the oxidation rate of pyritic material with particular emphasis on the catalytic role played by bacteria. More recently mathematical models and field measurements have clarified the extent to which oxygen transport rates are rate limiting, what the dominant oxygen transport mechanisms are and the physical properties of the heaps which have most impact on these transport rates and on the overall oxidation rate. How the performance of bio-oxidation heaps can be optimised and how the pollution load in drainage from waste rock dumps depends on gas transport mechanisms is briefly reviewed. The sensitive of the overall oxidation rate in bio-oxidation heaps and waste rock dumps to details of the intrinsic oxidation rate is quantified.

Lab-scale flotation of copper and cobalt oxidized ore from the Luiswishi deposit in the Katanga province (DRC) has been done focusing on the influence of the degree of process water recycling on metals recovery. Results have shown that at 20 % recycling rate, the recovery of copper and cobalt in the cleaner stage have been respectively reduced to 23 % and 45 % in comparison to 53 % Cu and 63 % Co if process water has not been recycled. At 10 % recycling rate however, the system could still tolerate the effect from recycling, since Cu and Co recovery has remained respectively at acceptable levels of 52 % and 60 %. In order to explain the reasons for the observed worsening of flotation results if process water was recycled at rate higher than 20 %, electrochemical investigation of the pulp has been performed. It has been established that the chemical compounds formed in the pulp when process water was recycled, do influence the sulphidization of malachite and heterogenite and impact further collector adsorption. To confirm these assumptions, the effect from thiosulphate ions presence during the sulphidization of high purity malachite has been studied. It has been found, that thiosulphate ions depending on their concentration in water induce variations in pulp properties such as DO content, pH, Es and contribute to formation of undesirable chemical compounds on mineral surface as identified by DRIFT spectroscopy.

The surface tensions of lead and lead alloys with very low concentrations of silver, tin and copper were measured by the sessile-drop method. The enrichment of silver and tin in the surface of liquid lead alloys at temperatures close to the freezing-point of lead was confirmed, which may explain the unusual behaviour of small amounts of silver and tin in lead bulllion during the sulphur-drossing step of the refining process. From the limited data available copper also appears to concentrate at the surface of the liquid alloy

Construction of Boston’s C11A1 Section of the Central Artery (I-93)/Tunnel(I-90) Project beneath the existing MBTA Red Line Subway at South Station required excavation to depths in excess of 33.5 m (110 ft) through permeable sand and gravel subject to almost 27.4 m (90 ft) of hydrostatic groundwater pressure. As tacked drift tunnel underpinning system was designed to provide positive support to the active station prior to mainline tunnel construction. As part of this system, a permeation grouting program was developed to facilitate tunnel excavation. This paper describes the design and implementation of the grouting program, in sit testing, and the overall performance of the grouted soil mass.

Horizontal displacements and ground strains induced by mine subsidence are significant information needed for calculating damage and developing precautions against subsidence effects on surface structures. To devise a simple method for determining the surface horizonal displacements and strains simultaneously with the subsidence prediction, the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the significance of the tilt number, which is the proportionality constant in the relationship between the horizontal displacement and the slope of the subsidence profile. The ratio of the tilt number to the critical radius of the subsidence trough is identical to the ratio of the maximum possible horizontal displacement to the full subsidence, which is found to be constant in most European coalfields. If this ratio is known for a particular minesite in the United States, then horizontal displacement and ground strains can be readily obtained from the primary subsidence data.

In Expeditions 22 and 26 of China Ocean Survey (COS), Chinese and Russian scientists have Carried out a lot of work to search for hydrothermal sulfide in Southern Mid-Atlantic ridge (SMAR) 19°S, but come back empty-handed at last. The sulfide formation is closely related with the water-rock reactions which are controlled by the heat source. Melt inclusions are considered to have a unique compositions in melt to reflect the deep magma processes. Fortunately, we have found a large number of plagioclase hosted melt inclusions in SMAR19°S MORB. We have done experiments by re-homogenization and re-crystallization of these melt inclusions. During the re-homogenization experiments, the forming and melting processes of the olivine crystal inside the melt inclusions indicate that the homogeneous temperature of melt inclusions is 1190-1200??. During the recrystallization experiments, the different mineral phase assemblages show H2O inside the melt inclusions has hardly ever been loss, in addition Cr element and H2O molecule in SMAR19°S magma are heterogeneity at the time of melt inclusions trapping, and then the re-crystallization experiments provide a method to prove the microheterogeneity of basaltic magma system. Combining with the bulk rock data, this study shows that the melt inclusions are formed at a low-temperature and high-pressure condition. Eventually, this paper speculates that a low temperature heat source generated by a lower mantle potential temperature or/and a thick lithosphere indicated by the melt inclusions that not experienced the H2O loss process are beneath the SMAR19°S. The low temperature heat source transmits its heat to lithosphere through the cooling thermal boundary layer (CTBL), and the thick lithosphere can sufficiently absorb and consume the heat. Under the interaction between the heat source and lithosphere, the residue heat at the infiltration depth of sea water might have been no ability to satisfy the water-rock reactions temperature, therefore, the water-rock reaction should hardly ever appear, so the theoretical reaction zone would not exist beneath the SMAR19°S. Eventually, the interaction between thick lithosphere and the low-temperature heat source should be the dominant factor that makes SMAR19°S area have no condition to form the seafloor sulfide. However, this paper is based on melt inclusions only, in fact, melt inclusions are potential to have melt compositions produced by mineral dissolution, reaction and assimilation, and the volumes of melt inclusions are exceedingly small compared to the overall size of the magmatic systems, therefore, the extrapolation across many orders of magnitude is implicit when applying petrologic information obtained from inclusions to entire magmatic systems. Therefore, there should have other more research to verify the reliability of this conclusion.

Uma das principais razões para o reparo de altos-fornos é a perda do revestimento refratário, principalmente nas regiões da soleira e onde são feitos os furos de corrida. A operação intensa dos altos-fornos pode resultar em desgaste e deteorização extensiva do material refratário. Isto pode, então, afetar a continuidade das operações e a vida útil do forno. Novo-Lipetsk (NLMK) e a Hatch desenvolveram uma abordagem sistemática para monitorar a condição do revestimento da soleira dos altos-fornos usando Acousto Ultrasonic-Eco (AU-E), um sistema de ensaios não-destrutivos desenvolvido pela Hatch. Inspeções contínuas e periódicas dos altos-fornos revelaram áreas com deterioração acelerada do material refratário, formação extensa de “elefant foot” e acelerado desgaste do refratário, assim como fissuras e outras anomalias. Para prolongar a vida do forno, mantendo a intensidade de suas operações, algumas modificações, tais como a melhoria da qualidade do coque e da limpeza das placas de resfriamento e adição de óxido de titânio, entre outras medidas, foram recomendadas e aplicadas. Este trabalho demonstra como esforços coordenados entre a NLMK e a Hatch resultaram no prolongamento da vida útil de um alto-forno

Os aços resistentes à abrasão da classe 450 HB foram desenvolvidos para operações em ambientes onde ocorre desgaste excessivo, sendo estes aços martensiticos de elevada dureza e uma difícil soldabilidade. Este trabalho propôs-se a otimizar os parâmetros de soldagem do processo FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) através da análise do projeto de experimentos (Design of Experiments - DOE) utilizando a Metodologia de Superfície de Resposta (Response Surface Methodology – RSM). Após a determinação dos parâmetros de soldagem ideais, foi realizado a caracterização mecânica e metalúrgica de uma junta soldada com estes parâmetros a fim de certificar-se das propriedades da junta com parâmetros de soldagem otimizados.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated treatment of gold and silver refractory ores and concentrates that respond poorly to conventional cyanidation techniques due to the complex mineralogy of the ore. Three types of ores were investigated: gold locked placer sands, gold locked in sulfides, and gold that is robbed from the pregnant cyanide solutions by minerals in the ore. Ore treatment included grinding, flotation, cyanidation, air oxidation, pressure oxidation, hypochlorite oxidation, roasting, and carbon in leach.

Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) and Centro de Investigation Minera y Metalurgica (CIMM) commenced a five year project from 2001 to modify the treatment of the furnace dust from Teniente converter containing harmful elements like arsenic and lead. The project was supported by Japanese and Chilean governments, and a demonstration plant was installed and operated at Las Ventanas Smelter and Refinery (Division Ventanas CODELCO). The basic and detailed engineering was made by Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co., Ltd (MMS) based on the joint study among JOGMEC, CIMM and Division Ventanas CODELCO. Arsenic in flue dust is lixiviated by sulfuric acid and fixed as crystalline ferric arsenate, where leachability of arsenic will be lower enough than the regulation, 5mg/I by TCLP (Toxicity Charactaristic Leaching Procedure) of USEPA. On the other hand, the recovered copper from the dust will be fed to the copper production process at Las Ventanas Smelter and Refinery, while zinc will be recovered as the exportable product. As introducing the crystallization and growing stage, the stable crystalline ferric arsenate formation can be achieved under the normal pressure.
