In spite of advances in measurement techniques and an explosive increase in the volume of research, our understanding of human strength remains in its introductory stages. It is clear that muscle strength is a highly complex and variable function that depends on a large number of factors. It is not surprising, therefore, that large differences in strength exist not only between individuals, but even within the same individual tested repeatedly on a given piece of equipment. The issue is compounded by the fact that correlations of strength among different muscle groups in the same individual are generally low, and tests of isometric strength do not necessarily reflect the strength an individual might exhibit in a dynamic test. As a result of these and other influences, great care needs to be exercised in designing, evaluating, reporting, and interpreting muscular strength assessments. Traditionally, tests of muscular strength were in the domain of the orthopaedist, physical therapist, and exercise physiologist. Such tests are also an important tool for the ergonomist, however, because of the high strength demands on workers in manual materials-handling tasks. In some cases, task demands may approach or even exceed the strength that an individual is voluntarily willing to exert in a test of strength. In such cases, evidence suggests that the likelihood of injury is significantly greater than when the task demands lie well within an individual's strength capacity. Because the relationship among strength capabilities, job demands, and musculoskeletal injury has been established, it is apparent that tests of muscular strength may benefit the ergonomist both in designing jobs and in ensuring that individuals have sufficient strength to safely perform physically demanding jobs. Several strength assessment techniques have been employed for these purposes, each possessing unique characteristics and applicability to job design and worker selection procedures. Our main purpose has been to elucidate these strengths and weaknesses, so that tests of strength may be properly applied in designing jobs and selecting workers. One of the crucial points we have emphasized is that any test of strength used in job design or worker selection must be directly related to the demands of the job.(1) For example, if an occupational lifting task has a high dynamic component, a test of isometric strength is not likely to provide the data necessary for proper design of the job. Of course, dynamic strength tests would also be misapplied in assessing a job requiring isometric exertions. Another potential pitfall is using tests of strength on isolated muscle groups and assuming that they are indicative of whole-body strength. For example, one might mistakenly assume that dynamic trunk extension strength represents a person's capability to perform a lifting task. However, an individual's lifting capacity may be entirely unrelated to trunk extension strength. It may, instead, be limited by an individual's arm or leg strength, depending on the task being performed. A final point on strength assessment should be made. Mining and processing of pyrite ore at Iron Duke Mine, north east of Zimbabwe, generates large quantities of acidic mine water as a result of the oxidation of iron sulfides on exposure to air and water used in the drilling and blasting operations. The acid mine drainage (AMD) contains elevated levels of dissolved Fe, Al, Mn and sulfate and has characteristic pH values ranging from about 0.50 to 3.00. Handling and disposal of such a drainage places significant impacts on the economics of the mining operation due to the corrosive nature of the drainage on infrastructure, the limitations placed on water reuse and discharge to the environment under a new law governing effluent discharge. Treated sludge at Iron Duke is chemically unstable, changing pH from ~7 to ~3 within four days after deposition in the evaporation ponds. The effluent does not meet the permitted level of neutral pH, 500 mg/l sulfate and less than 2000 mg/l total dissolved solids. Excessive acid seepage from the evaporation ponds has resulted in contamination of the ground water below the ponds area, which shows high mean annual levels of iron (368.67 mg/l), sulfate (1702.89 mg/l) and low pH (2.86) in addition to other pollutants. This poor quality seepage infiltrates into the nearby Yellow Jacket River, contaminating the public water source. Furthermore, a deterioration of the land area and vegetation adjacent to the tailings dump is also observed. Understanding the controls on the neutralisation of acidic drainage and long-term sludge stability after placement in evaporation ponds is essential to minimise costs of closure requirements and for the protection of environment and human health. This study examined the effects of the master variables pH, redox potential, acidity and alkalinity on acid neutralisation. The results indicate that ferrous hydroxides are not as stable as ferric hydroxides and that proper oxidation of iron also leads to better sludge stability, higher treatment efficiency and a manageable sludge viscosity. Metal hydrolysis and secondary mineral formation at the evaporation ponds under a wide range of pH and redox conditions is responsible for equilibrium shifts in metal reactions, resulting in high potential for metal leaching and mobility. Mechanisms of metal attenuation are also discussed.

Remediation and restoration of offshore marine habitats is a relatively new concept with attempts in European regions largely being instigated by requirements of various strategic directives including Article 2 of the Habitats Directive (1992), the EC Water Framework Directive (2000, Article 2 of the OSPAR Convention (1992) and the developing European Marine Strategy Directive. A field experiment to establish the practicality of various options for rehabilitating the seabed on the cessation of dredging has been successfully set-up. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the practicality and effectiveness of gravel seeding as a potential restorative method which could be applied at marine aggregate extraction sites following cessation of dredging. Zone 2, within Area 408 (offshore Humber) was chosen as the experimental site as there is some evidence for persistence of sand which may have resulted from screening operations at this site.

Cyanide speciation and behavior have been examined at three active heap leach operations, three heaps undergoing rinsing, and three sites with cyanide contaminated groundwater, all in the southwestern U.S. Data from these studies demonstrate that strong cyanometallic complexes of iron and cobalt can play ?an important role in cyanide behavior throughout the lifetimes of heap leach operations. In active circuits, we find evidence that significant amounts of cyanide combine with iron and cobalt to form strong cyanometallic complexes, and that these species can be adsorbed, probably onto iron hydroxides, or precipitated as insoluble cyanometallic compounds. When spent heaps are rinsed, the release of this cyanide is likely controlled by the slow kinetics of desorption from, or dissolution of, solids that have gone largely uncharacterized. We find evidence that strong cyanometallic complexes can give rise to transient free cyanide in some settings by rapid photo dissociation where heap rinse effluent is exposed to sunlight in open channels or translucent sample bottles. Thus, these species can complicate the ,preparation of spent heaps for decommissioning, even where regulatory standards ?are based on weak acid dissociable cyanide. There is a critical need for information on the form and stability of adsorbed and precipitated cyanide in spent ore heaps, on the concentrations of strong cyanometallic complexes in mineral processing effluents -particularly the complexes of cobalt, and on the natural attenuation of iron and cobalt cyanometallic complexes in both surface and subsurface waters.

Gold-bearing quartz veins with auriferou pyritic wall rock alteration haloes at the Komis deposit near Waddy Lake in northern Saskatchewan occur in fractured Archean intermediate volcanic rock flanking a plutonic felsic intrusion. Three ore zones totalling 1.5 million tonnes grading five g/t gold have resulted from a combination of patterns of high density of fracture-filling quartz veins created by contrasting competencies of four predominant rock types and preferential gold deposition in magnetitebearing andesite host rock. Pre-glacial surface weathering remobilized gold from a nearby pyritized intermediateto- felsic dyke to form the EP Zone with a wide variety of supergene accessory minerals. Much of the EP Zone wa eroded by glacial action to forn1 a highly anomalous gold-bearing till dispersion train which facilitated its di covery.

It is believed that sulfur and volatile matter con-tents in coals are the main intrinsic properties to cause the self-heating of coal. Their oxidation at lower temperatures than that of fixed carbon to initiate coal's self-heating should be quantified. This study is aimed to improve the previous mathematical model developed by the authors for studying the coal's propensity for spontaneous combustion. It enhances the model's ability to consider the effects of sulfur, volatile matter and moisture contents in the coal three important factors affecting the coal's self-heating process. Sulfur exists in coal primarily in the form of pyrite which will be oxidized rapidly under suitable conditions. Volatile matters, higher in low rank coals, are more easily to be oxidized. Heat of water condensation provides initial energy for low temperature oxidation. Heat release rates for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are built in the model. Finally, the simulation results in terms of time versus temperature on pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are validated with the adiabatic testing data respectively.

INTRODUCTION The gold production is from the state-owned gold mines, the local gold mines and the by-product of metal mines. Since 1975, the small gold mines have developed in rapid strides. Currently, there are about 3000 small gold mines in China. Most of them are operated by the local, and the production is about 50% of China's gold output. In the small gold mines, the normalized mining equipments are employed at most of mines, but some mines still use such backward tunnelling and mining tools as pick, shovel and hand hammer etc.. The mining techniques have developed from the primitive to the advanced, especially the methods of open stope, shrinkage and filling have been widely used. Such new mining techniques as bolting, vibrating draw, non-electric ignition and diamond drilling etc. are also introduced in the wall gold mines. In recent years, the development of small gold mines is very fast under the guidance of new mining policy which is ' rapid and great development of large-sized mines, helping small mines to develop, and quick mining for the existing mines; and encouraging the collective and the individual to operate a mine.' GEOLOGICAL FEATURES The gold veins are dominant, which are divided into two types, ie. the mesothermal deposit with altered rock in a crushed zone and the hypothermal deposit with quartz veins. The orebody distribution is not centralized, and the size of deposit and single minable orebody is small respectively. Most of deposit dip at 30° to 50°, characterized by expansion and shrinkage, ramification and compound, thinning out and reappearance, separation and composite at the parallel veins etc.. The ore grade is variable, and the factor of grade change is above 100%. The waste zones with lean or submarginal ore usually exist in deposits. As for the gold deposits with altered rock, the ore boundary is indistinct. Most of gold deposits, particularly the gold deposits with altered rock, are intruded by the late structural rock, thus the faults and joints are developed, and the rock and ore are crushed, especially the host rock of roof wall is very crushed. It ie obvious that the conditions of both formation of deposit and mining are considerably complicated. HISTORY With a long mining history and rich experiences, the local gold sectors are small, but they play an important role in China's gold mining industry. Dated from Xia and Shang Dynasty, the gold goods was made. In the Tang Dynasty, the development of gold mining industry was very fast. A Chinese poem , written by Liu Yuxi -- one of famous poets in the Tang Dynasty, says: As sun is shining over Dengzhou land, The fog on river slowly goes away, The panning girls together meet at bay, The beauty's jewels and stamps of king are gold from river sand. This poem shows the local gold mining was flourishing at that time. In 1888, the local gold mining sectors were all the rage at the moment, and the annual output of gold was as high as 21.5 tons. Since the founding of New China, the development of local gold mining was subjected to several back- sets, but certain advances are made on the whole, especially since 1970. Round about 1970,the simple, backward and indigenous mining was dominant in the small gold mines; for instance, the hand-hammer drilling, the hand-operated winch hoisting and the hand haulage etc.were main methods of gold mining . Up until the late 1970s,great changes took place in stoping, haulage and so on. Currently, some advanced technology and large-sized equipments are adopted in the local gold mines. "AbstractAt the end of May, 1950, Imperial Oil, Limited, had completed a total of 192 D-3 wells in the Leduc-Woodbend field, 62 of which lost circulation in the D-3 zone for periods ranging from two hours to fifty days. The majority of the remaining wells •lost some mud without actual loss of returns. In addition, independent operators completed 69 D-3 wells, of which 9 lost circulation. Included among the latter is the now well known Atlantic No. 3 well, which blew wild out of control for seven months. The well was finally brought under control through two directionally drilled wells, but not before the derrick fell and the well caught fire. Practically all known filler materials have been used in attempt3 to prevent or regain loss of circulation, but none has been successful, except in minor cases. Ordinary sawdust has come to be the most commonly used filler material and is added to the mud before the D-3 zone is contacted. In cases of serious loss of circulation, the on1y successful method of getting returns has been the use of a series of small cement plugs.IntroductionThe Leduc field is twenty miles southwest of Edmonton, Alberta. Geologically, it is on the east limb of the Alberta syncline, in the homoclinal belt. The main productive zones are in the Upper Devonian formation and are known locally as the D-2 zone and D-3 zone, respectively (see Figure 1).The D-3 zone is a dolomitized reef with fair average porosity and permeability, and shows considerable evidence of vertical fracturing. Porosity is mainly due to moderately uniform development of vugs which are interconnected by small crevices. However, the formation is known to be, locally, extremely vuggy and in places cavernous. These latter conditions create very serious drilling problems due to the hazard of loss of circulation, particularly in the gas cap, which has a maximum thickness of 200 feet. The D-3 zone is contacted at an average depth of 5,300 feet."

As part of the EIS and permitting activities for the Pogo Mine in Alaska, a risk assessment study for the water management plan was carried out. The basis for the study was a site water volume and contaminant balance model. Probabilistic modeling was carried out using the @Risk Monte Carlo simulation package to investigate the frequency, quantity, and quality of discharges under varying assumptions. The results were used in discussions with regulatory officials as part of the permitting process for the project. The simulation allows probabilistic modeling of key environmental parameters based on input frequency distributions involving both quality and quantity of flow. When combined with predictions of water treatment plant capacities and removal efficiency, this was very useful for defining the likelihood of important regulatory outcomes. Based on the model, certain project modifications were made. Using the simulation as a basis, ongoing dialog with regulators led to consensus that all potential risks have been considered and mitigated for the Pogo Mine according to their likelihood and severity, and that regulatory requirements would be achieved. The paper describes the model and some of the applications for which it was used.

"In the mining industry time is critical as production depends on the speed of the mining cycle. During the mining process, the time required to re-open access for the next phase of an underground heading is a key point that strongly depends on the ability of the selected ground support technique to promptly ensure the safety of workers. Fiber reinforced dry-mix shotcrete has been proven to be an efficient and well adapted technique, able to produce a ground support material with the required energy absorption or flexural toughness in a single application phase. In this context, this paper demonstrates the possibility of significantly speeding up the mining process by using a new fiber reinforced dry-mix shotcrete. The new fiber reinforced dry-mix shotcrete is capable of developing flexural toughness in only 24 hours that is equivalent to what is typically achieved after 28 days using current fiber reinforced drymix shotcrete technology.INTRODUCTIONShotcrete is often used for ground support when using the drill and blast method or other tunnelling methods. But before re-opening access for the next phase of the underground heading, the applied shotcrete is required to reach a minimum compressive strength and in case of fiber reinforced shotcrete, a minimum flexural toughness (energy absorption) in order to ensure the safety of the workers going into the heading. Combined with bolts, the use of conventional fiber reinforced shotcrete becomes an interesting method for ground support as it is applied very soon after excavation and works to stabilize ground movements (Bernard E. S., 2009). In this case, the toughness development of fiber reinforced shotcrete becomes an important feature of the material when looking to speedup the mining cycle. However, early re-entry criteria in underground openings are difficult to ascertain as the load carrying capacity of fiber reinforced shotcrete is usually assessed after 7 or 28 days. For this reason, re-entry criteria varies from one mining area to another and are usually based on compressive strength requirements. For example, in northern Ontario, Canada, one of the current practices in the mining industry consists of allowing safe re-entry once fiber reinforced shotcrete has developed a compressive strength of higher than 4 MPa (Dufour, O’Donnell, & Ballou, 2003). Flexural toughness requirements on fiber reinforced shotcrete are also typically based on evaluation after 28 days."

Search Minerals has developed a Direct Extraction Process for recovery of rare earths from the Foxtrot and Deep Fox deposits in Labrador Canada. The process includes crushing, acid treatment, water leaching, impurity removal, precipitation of an intermediate rare earth product and finally re fining of the intermediate product to produce a high purity mixed rare earth oxide (*99% total rare each oxides). The Direct Extraction Process has been validated in an extensive demonstration pilot plant program at SGS Minerals. A total of 3 tonnes of material was processed to produce final mixed rare earth product. The results of the demonstration pilot plant program are reported.

As much as 100% of the gold and 67% of the silver in a sulphur-bearing hydrometallurgical leach residue have been transferred to copper metal at copper smelting temperatures by dissolving the partially calcined residue in an iron-bearing slag maintained in equilibrium with the liquid copper metal and matte phases. The precious metals can then be recovered by conventional refining techniques. Copper can be recycled at least four times without any detrimental effects on gold and silver transfers and recoveries. Apparent copper recovery in the .process can be over 100% because of the copper content of the residue. Based on slag analys.es, the overal1 recovery of gold in the copper metal and matte phases varies from 94% to 100% under all conditions investigated. On the? same basis, silver recovery varies .from 9S% ?to 99% under optimum conditions, but is only 4S% to 73% under other, less attractive conditions. Unaccounted for silver losses of' about 30% make it difficult to determine the major factors affecting ?silver transfer and recovery. A method for implementing the technology on a commercial scale at a Canadian copper/zinc smelter has been proposed. A preliminary economic assessment and comparison of the proposed pyrometallurgical process with conventional cyanidation indicates that either process is economically attractive for recovering gold and silver from leach residues. Although the capital costs are higher, the pyrometallurgical process is simpler, has higher recoveries, lower operating costs and no .potential environmental problems related to cyanide disposal.

Wall control blasting practices are necessary to reduce the impact of blasting on mine faces but can also have a significant negative impact on mine productivity and operating costs. The conventional practice in deep open pit mines is to use so-called trim blasts adjacent to pit walls. To provide burden relief these trim blasts have fewer rows than full production blasts and are fired to a cleared free-face; hence they are termed æunchokedÆ. This practice leads to scheduling constraints on the pit operations and can cause ore dilution due to excessive muckpile movement. The use of such trim blasts stems from the perception that increased wall damage results from æchokedÆ blasts. These concerns are based on the unproven assumptions that blast vibration levels and explosive gas penetration increase with increased blast burden and face confinement. This paper describes work undertaken as part of a major investigation into wall control blasting at the KCGM Fimiston Mine, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. It details a study to assess damage effects due to blast burden. Borehole air pressure measurements and borehole video camera inspections were done behind a series of single blastholes drilled with varying burden distances, as well as behind a dedicated trim blast and a full production blast. It was found that the measured damage effects, including visible rock cracking, dilation, and the limited extent of gas penetration behind the blastholes, did not vary significantly with burden or blast type for the cases tested. This result was in complete agreement with detailed vibration measurements conducted by Blair and Armstrong (2001) during the study, which found that vibration was independent of blast burden. As a result of these investigations, changes to the blasting practices at the mine were implemented. Dedicated trim blasts and free-face blasting have been replaced by modified production blasts and the practice of æchokingÆ blasts has been introduced. This has resulted in a significant improvement in productivity and cost savings without compromising pit wall integrity.

Refractory iron ore deposits in China have various genesis and complicated types, the nature of which is poor, fine-disseminated and complex. Therefore, refractory iron ore could scarcely be separated and utilized by traditional mineral processing technology at present. It is necessary to explore deep reduction technology to change the characteristics of refractory iron ore and to use effectively the iron resource. And deep reduction technology is that on the condition of higher reduction temperature than that of magnetic roasting and stronger reducing atmosphere, the iron oxides from iron ore was reduced to metallic iron particle that is easy to dissociate. And then production from deep reduction is easily separated by magnetic separation and iron powder production was obtained finally. Deep reduction technology for Lingyang iron ore from Jilin, China, as the refractory iron ore, was studied in this paper. The influences of such main factors as reduction temperature, time and coal content were investigated. The results showed that the Metallization rate of reduction product was up to more than 90% under optimum conditions, and then higher iron grade and recovery of reduction iron powder were obtained from subsequent magnetic separation. Furthermore, the deep reduction mechanism in the system was studied by the means of XRD and SEM analysis for reduction production and Physical Chemistry of Metallurgy. Analytical results indicated that during deep reduction, the size of iron particle from deep reduction materials was increasing as reduction temperature rising and reduction time extending. The growth of metallic iron particle from deep reduction production was divided into such three stages as reduction nucleation, deep reduction and growth of metallic iron particle.

WHEN I was a boy I walked into Fairbanks in 1905. I was but a soft chechako, and arrived with blisters covering my feet, as a result of "mushing" the 400-mile trail on foot. Because of them, the display windows of the trading posts were first to catch my eye-dog and horse collars, harness and sled parts! And because of my enthusiasm for things adventurous, I looked long upon the prospectors' gold pans, shovels, rifles, camp equipment, and what not. Today those windows are filled with motor car accessories, tires and repair parts; yes, even thermos bottles and vacuum cleaners! There were many chance meetings with little parties of prospectors in my youth, and it always set my blood to tingling. Sometimes it was a 70-year-old sun-baked son of the Arizona desert, wrangling his stubborn, faithful jenny away from some outfitting store, at others a shovel-ended poling b0at in northern Canada, \vith the partners and the dogs towing upstream along the bank, or an old sourdough, with tug-rope around neck and hand on the spruce sapling gee-pole, mushing along behind his two or three old, plodding malamutes, dragging a little Yukon sled piled high with rusty sheet-iron stove, pick and shovel, cross-cut saw and axe, rifle, bales of dog salmon, and other paraphernalia. These meetings envisioned the panning of old creek beds and draws in the search for as yet undiscovered pay-channels; they meant the toughest kind of work sinking a hole to bedrock in some far-away valley of promise; they suggested wood fires to thaw the frozen muck and gravel and crude windlass and hand-made tub to hoist the water and the mud; but loudest of all they spoke of Adventure.

Marrow vein deposits will continue to be an important source of valuable minerals. Productivity per manshift is not keeping pace with operating costs. Increased mechanization of stoping operations must be obtained to create greater productivity at a reduced cost per ton. This application of mechanization may be to either present methods or to newly developed concepts. The total mine unit operations will be effected by increased productivity. Two approaches to increasing the mechanization of narrow vein stoping were studied with the intention of increasing stope productivity and decreasing stoping costs. A method of bringing efficient rubber-tired equipment into narrow cut and fill stopes was designed. It proposes to provide stope access by way of a ramp constructed on the stope fill. Impact breaking equipment was studied and specific applications proposed.

The industrial test has been carried out in China Xinyu slag Engineering Co., Ltd. The wastewater flow is 150m3/h in the pilot scale. The prepared calcium carbonate has a whiteness greater than 90%, particle size less than 150nm. The mineralization of aluminum exhaust with waste carbide indicates that the CO2 absorption rate is greater than 99.0%, CO2 concentration in the exhaust gas is lower than 0.08%, the purity of mineralized calcium carbonate is greater than 99.0% and particle size is less than 100 nm.InstructionAccording to the statistic data from IEA (2009), the carbon dioxide discharge from fossil fuel consumption in China has exceeded it in the US by the year of 2007, China, has become the largest emitter of carbon dioxide all over the world. Meanwhile, the economic scale is still on an increasing trend in the next 50-100 years, leading to a continuous increment in carbon dioxide discharge. According to the international energy agency forecasts, the energy-relative CO2 discharge in China will rise to 11,615 million tons, 91.3% higher than it in 2007. In the year of 2012, the CO2 gross discharge has reached 10,000 million tons, obviously higher than the predicted value. It is a tremendous task to reduce the emission. Non-ferrous metals industry is one of the largest emitters of carbon dioxide among the industrial circle, the whole industry might discharge a huge amount of carbon dioxide (over 600 million tons), in which the electrolytic aluminum industry is the largest energy consuming industry and CO2 emitter. At present, the CO2 discharge has focused by the whole world due to the environmental problems it causes; meanwhile, supplement of new carbon source is needed due to the exhausting oil and coal resources, so that various countries in the world are attaching importance of the recycle and purification of CO2. Many countries are studying on the cyclic utilization of carbon dioxide. Gas CO2 is mainly applied in chemical, pharmaceutical raw materials, beverage filling agent, refrigerant, inert medium, solvents, pressure source, the welding protective gas, antioxidant and fire extinguishing agent, etc. Solid CO2 is mainly applied in penicillin production, fish, cream, ice cream and other food storage and transportation at low temperature, etc. nowadays, such methods as absorption method, membrane separation, adsorption, etc. are widely used to recycle CO2, with such problems as high investment cost and technical constraints etc."
