"This paper presents an analysis of respiraple dust generation due to the action of a continuous miner. Underground coal cutting by a drum-type continuous miner was simulated in the laboratory using a specially designed unique automated rotary coal cutting simulator (ARCCS). An analysis of -400 mesh particles was done on gravity collected material. Samples of entrained dust were collected through the use of cascade impactors. Both samples were analyzed for size distribution and particle shape. Using the simulated coal cutter permitted variation of operating and in-situ parameters to provide information on the effects on generation of -400 mesh particles. In these tests coal blocks with an approximate dimension of 18 in. x 15 in. x 6 in. (45.7 cm x 38.1 cm x 15.2 cm) were first subjected to confining pressures, equivalent to in-situ conditions. Such blocks were then cut by the cutting head of the ARCCS, thus simulating the action of the continuous miner in underground coal mining. During the tests under a particular set of in-situ and operating parameters a number of other parameters such as 1) penetration of bit into coal, 2) penetration resistance (thrust and cutting pressures), 3) rotating velocity of cutting head, and 4) acoustic emission activity in the coal block were monitored. After each cutting cycle the fractured surfaces were photo¬graphed and a velocity survey was conducted by using a sonic technique. At the end of each experiment the cutting paths of the bits in coal were photographed using an optical microscope with an attached camera.IntroductionThe continuous-mining machines introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners, designed for increased productivity, have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. As a result, the Federal Coal sine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted to enforce on the coal operators that the airborne respirable dust not exceed 2 mg/m3, and was intended to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumo-coniosis. This plus the other aspects of the legislation and the subsequent monitoring and enforcement by MSHA made it very imperative that the coal operators provide a relatively healthier and safer working environment for the coal miners. Since 1970, the Federal government has paid over 11.7 billion dollars to more than 470,000 miners with coal workers pneumoconiosis and their survivors (Newmeyer, 1981). These regulations, coupled with the assessment of the continuing burden on miners, the mining industry and taxpayers appear to have provided an impetus for the mining community towards comprehending the different parameters that influence dust generation and entrainment."

Xstrata is the operator of both Minera Alumbrera Ltd (50 per cent Xstrata, 50 per cent Wheaton River) and Ernest Henry Mining Pty Ltd, (99.99 per cent Xstrata), both copper-gold deposits, using conventional SAG/ball milling at current capacities of 36 Mt/yr and 10.3 Mt/yr respectively. Alumbrera is located in Catamarca Province, in the north west of Argentina. Ernest Henry is located in Cloncurry, north west Queensland, Australia. Both operations started in late 1997, with commercial production achieved in early 1998. Different designs and equipment are in use for both operations, however the evolution of SAG milling performance, although logically related to their specific features, reflect similar trends of consistent increases in throughput. This paper will discuss the main changes to the SAG mill liners in both operations and the results achieved to date. A summary of the operating strategies will be included.

Extractions of minerals from Searles Lake brines have taken place since 1873. Early operations were for borax and raw trona found on the surface, expanded after 1914 to include potash, salt cake, and soda ash. A new soda ash plant now in operation will double area production. The evaporite beds were formed by desiccation of Eastern Sierra runoff. The resulting series of brine-bearing salt beds supply the fluids necessary to feed the area chemical plants. Production methods include evaporation and crystallization for potash, borax, and salt cake; carbonation of brine to recover soda ash; and organic extraction of borax.

During the processing of iron ores, a large quantity of low-grade tailings containing abundant iron values in fine particle size range is produced. Due to the increasing demand in the high-grade ores for metallurgical operations and the stringent environmental conditions imposed on mining activity, it is essential to utilise the waste tailing pond slimes. Recovery of iron values from these tailing ponds not only enhances the life of the existing operating mines, but also enables achievement of a sustainable process. Iron ore tailing/slime (-150 μm) is produced after scrubbing and wet screening of a low-grade iron ore. Tailing beneficiation of iron ore has been addressed either by flotation or wet high intensity high gradient separation. The present paper aims to recover iron values from discarded slime containing assay ~56% Fe, ~6.5% SiO2, and ~7.0% Al2O3 from the Noamundi processing plant by using a high gradient magnetic separator (HGMS). In this process, tailings are effectively processed with a vertical pulsating high gradient magnetic separator to produce a relatively high-grade iron concentrate. The results of investigation indicate that this novel process is capable of producing an iron concentrate assaying ~ 60% Fe and ~3.25% alumina with a yield of ~55 % on weight basis and recover > 65 % iron bearing particles from the tailings. More importantly, the corresponding tailing contained ~45% Fe. It was concluded that this novel process may be effectively used to recover iron values from low-grade hematite tailings. "The Endako molybdenum deposit is located 160 km west of Prince George, British Columbia. It occurs within the main body of the Francois Lake Intrusions, a composite batholith consisting of early, middle and late intrusive phases. The ore deposit is confined to Endako Quartz Monzonite, a middle phase intrusion, which is bound on the north by Carey Alaskite and on the south by Francois Granite, both late stage intrusions. In the mine aretz, the Endako Quartz Monzonite has been intruded by pre-ore dikes of quartzfeldspar porphyry and porphyritic granite, and by post-ore dikesof basalt.The Endako deposit forms a west-northwest trending body that has a strike length of 3360 m and an apparent width of 370 m. It consists of four structurally distinct zones: Endako East, Endako West, Denak East and Denak West. Principal sulphide minerals of the deposit are pyrite and molybdenite, accompanied by magnetite and minor chalcopyrite. Galena, associated with wulfenite and bismuthinite, occurs in some ores of Endako West and Denak as minute inclusions in molybdenite. The sulphides and associated minerals are hosted by quartz veins which occur principally in vein systems. Hydrothermal alteration accompanying ore mineralization has pervasively kaolinized the quartz monzonite host rock, and has locally produced K-feldspar and quartz-sericite-pyrite envelopes on quartz veins.Primary structural controls of the deposit are southwesterly dipping vein systems which strike 110° in the Endako zones, 110° to 130° in Denak East and 170° in Denak West. Secondary structural controls are northeasterly striking vein systems that dip northwesterly in Endako East and southeasterly in Denak. Domal uplift accompanying the rise of latest stage magma is considered to have caused intense dilatant deformation along older west-northwest trending shear zones, producing an elongated structural host for ore deposition."

During the past several years, alunite from the Marysvale (Utah) region has been the subject of investigation by the Electrometallurgical Section of the Bureau of Mines. The nature and occurrence of this mineral, with considerable data on the Utah deposits, together with a number of results of preliminary experiments, have been given in a previous report.6/ The geology of the Marysvale region has been reviewed recently.7/ The present paper reports the results obtained by a method involving the sintering of alunite with boric acid and subsequent treatment of the sinter to produce alumina and potassium sulphate.

The relationship between the geology of porphyry copper deposits and their processing performance is an area of interest. Being able to predict comminution properties of the ore from physical characteristics and geological descriptions would allow an increase in the precision of capital cost estimates, operating cost estimates and throughput rates. This geometallurgical approach would reduce the requirements for expensive comminution tests.As the comminution circuit is the highest capital cost item in the plant and a possible throughput bottleneck, understanding the variability in hardness within the orebody is critical. A geometallurgical model allows calculation of ore hardness values in mining blocks from ore characterisation data. This model subsequently uses a combination of simulation and power-based approaches to relate ore hardness and flotation feed size to grinding circuit throughput.This paper reviews the geometallurgical models developed for seven porphyry copper deposits and discusses the strengths and shortfalls of the methodology and similarities and differences between the different deposits.CITATION:Harbort, G J, Lam, K and Sola, C, 2013. "Low-rank coals have a pronounced tendency to disintegrate or ""slack” when alternately dried, and wetted by exposure to the weather. The more readily a coal slacks the greater is its tendency to ignite spontaneously and the more care must be used in its shipment and storage. Lignite slacks very readily when exposed to the weather. Slacking trouble is also experienced in shipping and storing subbituminous coal, but not to the same extent as with lignite. As a rule, bituminous coals are only slightly affected by weathering and in general may be classified as nonslacking coals. The slacking tendency of subbituminous coal is one of the characteristics that is used to distinguish it from bituminous coal. An accelerated laboratory method of test was developed to measure such slacking tendencies. This method was applied to a number of coals, principally from the State of Washington, and the method and the results obtained are given herein.Helpful information concerning slacking tendencies of coal was received from Marius R. Campbell, senior geologist U. S. Geological Survey.Coals that slack readily contain relatively large amounts of moisture. When exposed to the weather such coals lore moisture rapidly. As the coal loses moisture at the surface there is a gradual drift of moisture from the interior of the piece to the surface. If the loss of moisture at the surface proceeds at a faster rate than it is replaced by moisture from the interior of the coal piece, there undoubtedly in greater shrinkage of the coal at the surface as tom-pared to the interior of the piece and stressed are generated in the surface coal.These stresses in the surface coal cause it to crack and disintegrate.Likewise, when the air-dried coal is wetted by rain, the exposed surface of the coal pieces gain moisture more rapidly than the interior of the piece, causing greater expansion in the surface coal and the coal breaks down further. As this process of air drying and wetting is continued when the coal is exposed to the weather, the slacking proceeds and the exposed lumps of coal may disintegrate completely."

No separation of salts was obtained, but it was observed that rather complete removal of so3 from the alunite occurred and that the sinter could be leached with water to give a solution contain¬ing most of the potash and a residue containing most of the alumina. "Abstract -The prospective Tulks volcanic belt hosts five significant massive sulfide deposits, Tulks Prospect, Tulks East, Jack's Pond, Daniel's Pond and Victoria Mine, as well as numerous showings and indications throughout its 70 km outcrop length. Regionally, the 498 Ma sequence consists dominantly of felsic pyroclastic rocks and flows with interbedded mafic volcanic units and fine­ grained sediments, commonly graphitic. Contemporaneous granitoid rocks occur in the south half of the belt. Rocks usually display a strong NE-SW, steeply dipping, penetrative foliation and other shear-related high-strain fabrics. Facing directions are normally northwest, although there is local evidence of folding. Sulfide bodies and their alteration systems are deformed and shape-modified in the style of ambient strain.The Tulks, Tulks East and Jack's Pond prospects appear to occupy a similar stratigraphic level, on or near the contact between a thick felsic pile and an overlying broad, conductive package of graphitic sedimentary rocks. AU are pyritic deposits with well-developed footwall alteration systems. The Tulks prospect comprises four polymetallic lenses totalling 750 000 t. Three lenses constituting more than 6 000 000 t of sulfide mineralization are indicated at Tulks East but only the 210 000 t ""B"" lens contains significant base metals. Jack's Pond consists of a very extensive, zoned alteration complex in which four lenses of massive to semi-rnassive pyrite + chalcopyrite are known.The central part of the system, characterized by Mg chlorite and carbonate, is enveloped by pervasive sericitization and capped by intensely silicified and pyritized volcanics. The sulfide lenses are interpreted as part of the footwall zone and are beneath that part of the system most likely to host polymetallic massive sulfides.Daniel's Pond differs from the other prospects in such fundamental ways as metal content, associated alteration and structural setting. The deposit comprises strongly tectonized, Ag-rich, Zn-Pb mineralization distinguished by a pronounced Ba-As-Sb signature. Mineralization is confined to a narrow, north-south high-strain zone which separates unstrained mafic volcanic rocks to the east from well-foliated felsic rocks. The deposit Jacks an extensive alteration halo and at its north end is associated with a lens of barren, undeformed massive pyrite.The Victoria Mine deposit, the most cupriferous of the five, is related to a moderately dipping structure that separates well-foliated Tulks volcanic rocks from an overlying, Jess deformed volcanic­ sedimentary sequence that may be as young as 462 Ma. The structure is also the locus of black chlorite, dolomite and quartz alteration. Structurally remobilized precursor sulfide mineralization is one possible source for the deposit."

"Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently developed a coal-mass model to realistically simulate the deformation and loading behaviors of the ribs of coal pillars in underground coal mines. The scale-dependent properties (stiffness and strength) of coal material were considered in the coal-mass model. In this paper the orientation of face cleat with respect to driving direction was integrated in the coal-mass model. The controlling parameters (dimensionless coal-mass scale and fracture strains) of the modified coal-mass model were calibrated using a published case study of coal pillar strength. Numerical models with wide ranges of controlling parameters were conducted to simulate the test pillar. The best match between the numerical modeling results and the measured stresses and deformations was achieved by using a coal-mass scale of 30 and fracture plastic shear and tensile strains of 3.25% and 0.325 %, respectively. INTRODUCTION The failure of coal pillar ribs by itself are a major hazard in underground coal mines. Furthermore, failing ribs can indirectly contribute to roof and floor instability by increasing opening widths across intersections and entryways. Over the past decade, rib failures have resulted in 12 fatalities, representing 28% of the ground-fall fatalities in U.S. underground coal mines. Mining depth has always played a very important role in assessing rib stability. Gauna and Mark (2010) completed an analysis of rib fatalities that occurred between 1996 and 2010. One of their most prominent and influential findings was the identification of a relationship among fatalities, depth, and mining height. Therefore, Coal rib stability will continue to be a challenge for future deeper mines in U.S. coal basins. In the past several decades, research efforts have focused on roof support. The current rib control practice in U.S. coal mines is to select rib bolts through a trial-and-error approach (Mohamed et al., 2015a). Rib failure incidents can be can be substantially reduced or even eliminated by adopting an engineering-based coal rib design approach. The factors affecting rib stability in coal mines are numerous and mutually dependent. These factors include but not limited to mining height and overburden depth, interburden thickness for multiple-seam mining, coal strength, cleat density, entry direction with respect to cleat orientation, existence or absence of partings in the coal, percentage of extracted roof and/or floor rock, density of rib bolt support (Mohamed et al., 2015a). Moreover, it is difficult to isolate the particular effect of a specific factor on the overall rib stability. Therefore, a reliable empirical rib design approach is not achievable because it requires a significant number of case histories to be collected in order to have a reasonable range of all of the critical parameters. However, numerical modeling can be a practical tool to assist with rib support design if the modeling is realistic, which can only be achieved through calibration and validation of the numerical model against field data."

The mineral wealth of pre-Cambrian rocks in Canada has been the subject of much study by geologists and engineers (members of this Institute), particularly so in the past few years, following discoveries of mineral deposits in areas far a part. This interest is well worth sustaining knowing the numerous rich producing mines within the pre-Cambrian formations, and the vast area covered by its rocks throughout this country. The pre-Cambrian has yielded minerals, both metallic and non-metallic; of these a much diversified list could be made. In more than one district we can point to mining as being responsible for the opening up of new sections, attracting a population into regions which otherwise would have remained virgin land of little commercial value. In these pre-Cambrian formations are found the rich copper deposits of Michigan, producing without interruption since 1845, and from which seven billion pounds of copper has been won; while in Minnesota and the adjoining district, at the head of Lake Superior, are mined iron ores which have rendered possible the great steel manufacturing industry of United States, the base of the economic structure of that wealthy country. The pre-Cambrian has given Canada the nickel-copper mines of the Sudbury district, the silver deposits of Cobalt and the gold camps of Porcupine and Kirkland Lake. With all of these our members are familiar; and it suffices to mention them to bring to mind pictures of the wealth and 'the growing population, in a word the importance of mining in?those sections of the country.

Most of South AfricaÆs high-grade iron ore resources are hosted within a fault-controlled structural basin in rocks of the Palaeoproterozoic Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Iron mineralisation occurs as individual orebodies in fault-bounded basins or as fold-controlled concordant lenses around an unconformity plane above the Kuruman Banded Iron Formation. The Sishen mine near Kathu and the beeshoek mine and Sishen South deposit near Postmasburg lie on the northern and southern border of a major domal structure known as the Maremane dome, respectively. The effects and structural constraints of at least three orogenic compressive episodes and several intermittent extensional episodes on the formation, erosion and preservation of iron mineralisation on the Maremane dome and surrounding environs were investigated. Ventersdorp impactogenal rift basin development at ~2.78 - 2.64 Ga, finalised with the deposition of the volcano-sedimentary Vryburg Formation during the thermal subsidence stage at ~2.64 - 2.6 Ga, and was followed by tectonic quiescence/stability and an extensive marine transgression across the entire Kaapvaal craton. The drowning event led to the formation of a carbonate platform with the deposition of the Schmidtsdrif and Campbellrand subgroups conformably above the Vryburg Formation at ~2.6 - 2.52 Ga. The initiation of distal (to the west of the Kaapvaal craton) off-craton oceanic rifting, causing submarine volcanism and associated hydrothermal activity, led to the deposition of initially manganiferous chert (Wolhaarkop Formation) followed by banded ironstone formations (Manganore Iron/Kuruman Formation) of the Asbestos Hill Subgroup at ~2.52 - 2.46 Ga. Initial passive margin rifting along the N-S oriented western edge of the Kaapvaal craton, initiated at the end of Ghaap Group time (during Koegas Subgroup deposition) at ~2.46 - 2.35 Ga, formed a prominent system of N-S striking, westerly dipping normal faults. Easterly directed crustal compression in post-Ghaap Group time in response to the Kalahari Orogeny (accretion of Rehoboth craton along western edge (Kalahari suture zone) of the Kaapvaal craton at ~2.35 - 2.24 Ma led to the formation of large-scale regional, N-trending F1-folds. Partial to complete inversion of the Koegas passive margin rift system (ie reverse dip-slip reactivation of the N-S striking normal fault system to high-angle reverse faults and dextral strike-slip reactivation of the Ventersdorp rift system developed in the Archaean basement), was followed by uplift, erosion and formation of a regional angular unconformity (Postmasburg unconformity). Uplift was accompanied by deposition of fluvio-glacial sediments of the Makganyene Formation (Lower Postmasburg Group) within an intracratonic peripheral foreland basin setting unconformable above Ghaap Group strata at ~2.35 - 2.24 Ga. Post-orogenic crustal relaxation and rifting caused extensional reactivation of the N-trending Palaeoproterozoic passive margin rift system and NE-trending Neoarchaean Ventersdorp impactogenal rift system, forming a fault-controlled depository for the volcano-sedimentary Upper Postmasburg Group at ~2.24 - 2.1 Ga. Deceleration in rifting was succeeded by thermal subsidence of the Upper Postmasburg Group rift, erosion, formation of a regional angular unconformity and deposition of clastic sediments of the Lower Olifantshoek Supergroup unconformable above Postmasburg Group strata at ~2.1 - 1.93 Ga. Renewed rifting led to the deposition of volcano-sedimentary units of the Upper Olifantshoek Supergroup within a rift system superimposed on the Postmasburg Group rift depository at ~1.93 - 1.83 Ga. Easterly directed crustal compression during the Kheis Orogeny at ~1.83 - 1.73 Ga led to renewed inversion of rift structures of the Postmasburg Group and Olifantshoek Supergroup depository, N-trending F2 folding and thin-skinned thrusting of older rock units eastwards over the cratonic cover, thereby utilising planes of weakness in the strata such as prominent unconformities and lithological contrast boundaries as principal dTcollements. NNW-directed crustal compression in response to Lomanian (Namaqua-Natal) Orogeny at ~1.15 - 1.0 G along the southern margin of the Kaapvaal craton, resulted in minor sinistral strike-slip reactivation of the N-S striking fault system, the formation of extensional NNW-SSE striking fracture/fault zones and the development of ENE-trending F3 folds forming a F2/F3 fold interference pattern. Post-Lomanian tectonic events (eg the Pan-African Orogeny at ~650 - 500 Ma, the Cape Orogeny at ~310 - 240 Ma, and the Gondwana breakup at 205 - 120 Ma), caused only comparatively minor extensional reactivation of the pre-existing fault systems. Iron mineralisation was ultimately preserved from erosion by Kheis Orogeny-related N-trending F2 synclines and Lomanian Orogeny-related ENE-trending F3 synclines, in particular areas of interference between F2 and F3 synclines representing comparatively deep semi-circular trough- like depressions, as well as in half grabens formed adjacent to reactivated westerly dipping N-S normal faults. Support for relating the iron and manganese mineralisation to structurally controlled hydrothermal fluid flow during the Kheis orogenic event has also been found, and ongoing research is aimed at confirming and refining the hydrothermal model for iron ore mineralisation in the Northern Cape.

Mud houses are common structures in most South African rural homes closer to the mining operations. Fulltime dwellers in these properties are often the elderly. The mine codes of practice and the South African legislative instruments attempt to define the damage criteria to limit the effect of the blast-induced noise and ground vibrations to different structures. All these assessment criteria are based on the peak particle velocity and noise generated during blasting. The South African safe limit criterion that was adopted was initially derived from the international standards, which were then used as a local guideline. This paper evaluates the currently adopted safe limit criteria used in South Africa for a mud house, currently rated at 6 mm per second and 120 decibels to134 decibels, for blast-induced seismicity and noise, respectively. Further, a study was performed on a residential house near a coal mine (5.26 km) based in Mpumalanga following numerous complaints by the owner, launched at the mine and to the Department of Minerals and Petroleum Resources. The aim of the study was to measure the magnitude of blast-induced triggers experienced at the aggrieved homestead and to establish if there is a likelihood that an irritation or damage may be caused by these triggers. The seismometer was installed at about 2 m from the mudhouse, from 1 July 2022 to 31 of July 2022. Five blast-induced triggers were recorded during the period showing an average of 0.09 mm/s and 121 decibels for blast-induced seismicity and noise, respectively. The results obtained indicated a maximum seismicity of 0.15 mm/s. This seismicity was below the perceptible vibrations obtained from daily home activities such as walking, jumping, and door slamming, which produce 0.8 mm/s, 7.1 mm/s, and 12.7 mm/s, respectively. Seismicity was therefore not likely to have caused any annoyance and or damage. For noise, the results indicated a maximum of 123 decibels and an average of 121 decibels from five events recorded. A literature review suggests that slight damage may occur when airblast frequencies match the natural frequencies of structures at 120 decibels. Based on these results, it can be concluded, therefore, that the noise, rather than seismicity, is more likely to be the cause of damage to the structure assessed. For improvement, a new approach is proposed based on relating the safe limits to the structural and human response.

Mechanism of BK501 in desiliconization from bauxite was studied by use of flotation test, EDS, ?-potential, FTIR. Results of flotation show that almost all of diaspore can be depressed when BK501 is put into pulp ranging from pH 4~12, in the meanwhile kaolinite is slightly activated. In the light of surface analyses, it is concluded that the adsorption of reagent on the diaspore is dominant by chemical interaction. Reflections on over ten years experience handling bituminous coal from railroad cars to ground storage and lake vessels. The arrangement of the facilities is described but the basic theme of the discussion is the experience gained and lessons learned from facility operation. The Great Lakes provide the maritime environment for the economical transport of vast quantities of raw materials from their source in the Upper Lakes (the Mesabi Range, for instance) to Lower Lake Ports. Lake Erie, because of its proximity to the steel centers , blossomed with the great ports that now line its southern shore - Toledo, Sandusky, Lorain, Cleveland, Huron, Ashtabula, Conneaut and Erie.

En este sentido, el presente texto plantea la fitorremediación como alternativa adecuada para el crecimiento de la vegetación a través de dos técnicas utilizadas en Europa y Estados Unidos de Norteamérica. La fitoextracción y fitoestabilización son utlizadas para la limpieza de suelos contaminados con metales pesados. micorrizas. Así, la aplicación de la tecnología de fitorremediación se presenta como una excelente opción para la descontaminación y restauración de los más de 8,000 relaves abandonados existentes en el Perú.

In February 2016, the upgraded Blast Furnace 1 of JSW Steel Limited (JSW) at its Vijayanagar Steel Plant was blown in after a 6 months shutdown in which the whole furnace was rebuilt on the existing foundation and within the existing tower structure. Despite several plant constraints it was possible to increase the furnace inner volume by 85% - reaching 2307 m3 from existing 1250m3. The upgradation project covered the stockhouse and its dedusting system, top charging system, furnace profile, furnace cooling system, casthouse and its dedusting system, slag granulation plant, pulverized coal injection plant, hot blast system and gas cleaning plant – with major interventions in order to cope up with the changed operating conditions. The total scope of the project was split by JSW into several packages, all based on design data provided by Paul Wurth. JSW was responsible for coordinating the local subcontractors along with Paul Wurth which has been appointed as main technology supplier in charge of complete basic and selected detail engineering in the key areas and of the supply of core equipment such as the Bell-less Top®, copper staves, GCP key items and TMT casthouse machines. The main design concept and the key points of the project such as optimization of project ROI, advanced erection concepts as well as a summary of the operating results are presented confirming JSW “BF1” upgradation as one latest examples of the current state of the art in the revamping projects.

Many coal beds in the State of Washington, pitching as much as 90°, offer unusual mining conditions. This paper describes methods and safe practices of mechanized mining in pitching bituminous-coal beds that have attracted the attention of mining people from most of the coal-producing countries of the world. The development and use of continuous miners as part of the mechanized program apply particularly to the Roslyn-Cle Elum coalfield, Kittitas County, Wash. All three mines now operating in the field use continuous miners and during 1957 furnished 72 percent of the State's total coal production. Mining operations are now conducted in three coal beds of the Roslyn-Cle Elum field. The coal measures range from 3-1/2 to 20 feet in thickness and vary in dip from 5° to 45° in the localities where the coal is mined. Some safety measures adopted by-the principal operating company in the field during the past 30 years of mechanized mining follow: Use of only permissible electrical or compressed-air-operated equipment on other than intake air; providing and using an explosion gallery to test repaired permissible electrical equipment before taking it underground; use of only compressed-air-operated drill augers in preference to permissible

Spent Pot Lining (SPL) is an unavoidable waste product of the electrolytic process in the smelting of aluminium. SPL is considered to be a hazardous waste in various countries because it contains significant quantities of absorbed fluoride along with traces of cyanide. The disposal of SPL has been primarily in landfill because of difficulties in the development of a successful techno-economic SPL treatment process. Increasing concern about SPL landfilling practices is resulting in regulations in some countries to ban this form of disposal. As a consequence stock piling of SPL is occurring in an increasing number of countries pending the development of a successful treatment process. In 1992 Portland Aluminium investigated a SPL treatment process based on pyrometallurgical technology and approached a company called Ausmelt in Dandenong, Victoria, Australia, to ascertain if their submerged lance technology furnace process would be suitable to treat SPL. This approach resulted in Portland Aluminium, Alcoa and Ausmelt personnel working together on trials during 1992 - 1994 in Ausmelt's demonstration furnace to produce a slag and off gases containing hydrogen and sodium fluoride. The trials also evaluated the effect of oxygen enrichment to increase the concentration of hydrogen fluoride and the ability to recycle sodium fluoride particulate produced as the furnace off gases cooled. Other separate developmental work by Portland Aluminium, using CSIRO, resulted in the production of aluminium fluoride from the offgases from the pyrometallurgical process. The results of these projects influenced Portland Aluminium and Alcoa to authorise up to $A26 400 000 in December 1995 to construct a Research and Development processing facility to treat SPL at Portland. The Portland Aluminium unique gas treatment process converts hydrogen fluoride in the furnace offgases to aluminium fluoride in a multistage fluidised bed reactor, designed by Portland Aluminium. The aluminium fluoride produced in the reactor has been trialed successfully in Alcoa's aluminium smelting process as a replacement for imported aluminium fluoride. The installation in mid-2001 of a slag granulation system has enabled the production of a granulated vitreous slag having leachability qualities that conform to Victorian EPA criteria for the unrestricted use of the granulated vitreous slag from 'The Alcoa Portland SPL Process'. The unrestricted use of the granulated slag successfully completes 'The Alcoa Portland SPL Process' which treats the hazardous waste material SPL and converts it into non hazardous useful products.
