"Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)was acquired over the Carajás Mineral Province, within the rainforests of the Amazon, which hosts the world’s largest Fe-ore deposit(Santos, 1986). Significant chemical weathering exists in this humid environment. PrevalentAu mineralization is thought to be generally associated with deformation zones in Archean schists.Radar data have proven to be very useful as an aid to geological mapping in the tropical rainforests of the Amazon Basin in Brazil. In these densely vegetated areas, a sense of regional structural trends is obtained as a con-sequence of the sensor/terrain geometry. The top forest canopy is the main terrain reflector of X-band radar energy, and consequently is the main terrain surface feature expressed in processed radar imagery. Radar is important for extending t,he continuity of mapped structural lineaments. Differential weathering is related to variations in radar image texture which is used to infer gross lithologic variations and relative age relationships of major rock units. Specifically, quartzites and banded iron formation are highlighted in the radar imagery due to their unique tonal and textural appearance, in contrast to schists, gneisses and metavolcanic rocks. As tropical areas are typically enveloped in cloud or mist, radar data are invaluable in providing information for logistical planning of field mapping activities."

O emprego de fontes renováveis de carbono encontra nos processos de coqueificação uma forma de reuso de partículas carbonosas finas ou fora das especificações necessárias para utilização em outros processos metalúrgicos, além de reduzir as emissões de carbono. O presente trabalho avalia os principais efeitos da incorporação de um carvão vegetal de eucalipto a uma mistura de carvões para a produção de coques em forno piloto. Para isso, o carvão vegetal foi adicionado em teores de 3%, 5% e 10%, e em duas frações granulométricas, a uma mistura de carvões. A qualidade dos coques gerados foi avaliada e discutida ao longo do trabalho por ensaios de caracterização do coque como, análise imediata, teor de enxofre, reatividade e resistência pós-reação (CRI/CSR), resistência mecânica a frio (DI 150/15) e textura óptica. Foi observado que a adição de 3% de carvão vegetal, na fração mais grosseira, à mistura de carvões resultou no coque de melhor qualidade.

"Traditional geostatistical modelling methods are difficult to apply to heavy-tailed deposits because the extreme positive skew of the grade distribution leads to bias. The focus here is on an innovative method of modelling the high-grade population by conditionally simulating discrete volumes (nuggets) of gold with marked Poisson and Cox processes. Capping and other ad-hoc manipulation of the assay data is not required; however, an intensity map for the point processes is required. The method is demonstrated on a dataset from an epithermal deposit and demonstrates an improvement in reducing smearing and controlling the skew of the grade distribution.RÉSUMÉ Les méthodes traditionnelles de modélisation géostatistique sont difficiles à appliquer dans des gisements dont la distribution de la teneur est à queue lourde car l’extrême asymétrie positive de la distribution de la teneur génère des biais. Dans le présent article, l’accent est mis sur une méthode novatrice de modélisation de la population à haute teneur par la simulation conditionnelle des volumes discrets d’or (pépites) au moyen de procédés marqués de Poisson et de Cox. La limite d’utilisation et d’autres manipulations ad hoc des données ne sont pas requises; toutefois, il faut une carte des intensités pour le processus ponctuel. La méthode est démontrée sur un ensemble de données d’essais provenant d’un gisement épithermal et elle montre une amélioration dans le lissage du flou et dans le contrôle de l’asymétrie de la distribution de la teneur."

A research effort has been undertaken, under WSIB sponsorship, to characterize the support capabilities of conventional and innovative spray-on lining materials for mitigating dynamic failure effects created by simulated rockbursts. Conventional spray support media, such as shotcrete and fibrecrete linings, and a variety of new spray-on lining materials (TSL?s), typically polymer-type thin coatings, were subjected to simulated rockburst influence. For baseline comparison, conventional rockbolt and boltand- mesh support products were also evaluated. Observation of lining performance was undertaken through completion of field scale support and rock detonation trials. Controlled blasting tests were conducted at the Queen?s University Explosives Laboratory to examine the effectiveness of the variety of surface coating agents for modifying dynamic rock spalling processes. All tests were performed upon largely undisturbed and homogeneous rock materials in highly repeatable fashion. Both conventional and innovative TSL-type surface lining materials were subjected to ?rockburst? exposure in rigorously-controlled blast trials. All blasts were observed seismically and photographically to provide detailed information concerning rock motion, surface fracturing, ejected fragment motion and support liner survivability characteristics. These material comparison trials were performed to assess the relative effectiveness of a wide range of currently-available area support techniques for suppressing hazards associated with dynamic rock ejection. The results of this study validates that thin, sprayon linings may be equally as effective, and often better, than conventional support materials at mitigating rockburst or like damage in highly stressed mine environments.

Waste clay ponds are a necessary part of phosphate rock beneficiation. They are large, averaging 2.6 km2 (1 sq mile). They are unsightly in that they protrude 6 to 15 m (20 to 50 ft) above natural grade. Stabilization and reclamation is slow and they have had a history of catastrophic failure. Florida has never published a specific rule regarding the configuration or height of these ponds. But it has enforced several policies along these lines. The phosphate industry has been forced to make major monetary decisions that affect mine economics for decades. The Florida Bureau of Mine Reclamation believes that the direction of regulation has been solidified but changes are still anticipated. Phosphate rock has been mined in Florida since 1890 (Fig. 1). Three notable technological changes occurred in the industry that led to major shifts in mining technique and volume. By about 1915, hydraulic mining had been replaced by centralized washers. Hydraulic mines usually started at an outcrop in or adjacent to a stream of the pebble zone. Water was pumped out of the stream through high-pressure monitors and sand and clay were washed away from the pebble. Mobile grizzlies and screens were used in conjunction with animal and human labor to concentrate the pebble and haul it away. Populations were sparse and the clays washed into the stream were considered an acceptable price for the commerce. The clays were not voluminous because the pebble zone typically contained relatively small amounts of them. Machines largely replaced animals by 1910 and provided greater efficiency of production. Centralized washers replaced mobile trommels. They allowed greater ease of access to shipping routes by rail. Some clays were placed in mine cuts from 1915 to 1930. Some were dammed off to increase the capacity of a given site. Some of these also failed, leading to clay plumes that were visible all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. By concentrating the waste clays (slimes) in impoundments, the solids concentration had increased, making plumes persistent for long distances. There were complaints. But there was no litigation against the companies during that time. In 1930, flotation technology allowed the recovery of the phosphate from deeper zones. This was because the "concentrate" size phosphate rock was in the sand-size range and could not be screened out. Centralized beneficiation plants grew into a three-step process - washing and screening, feed preparation and flotation (Fig. 2). Reagent storage, safety and the flotation cell complex made the plants into large capital installations. Larger draglines were required to dig deeper into the matrix. These had dramatically larger production capacities, which were then figured into the overall material balance for a given plant. The number of operators shrank and the production per operator grew. Larger areas were being bermed off for waste clay storage. An economic incentive became apparent for storing as much waste clay as possible in each settling area. At the same time, the population was steadily growing and more eyes were watching the activities of the phosphate mines. [Testing explosives for safe use in coal miner ran boon an important factor in preventing mine explosions. In the United States, explosives that have been approved by the Bureau of Mines are called permissible explosives. A purvey of the history of coal mining since permissibility testing welt, instituted some 4 years ago shown that there is no record of a coal-mime explosion caused by permissible explosives when used in a manner prescribed by the Bureau. To maintain the appropriate standards of quality, the Bureau of Mines conducts a series of examinations and tenth on samples of explosives collected in the field. In what is considered the most crucial test, teat 1, the explosives An fired from a steel cannon into a gallery atmosphere containing a mixture of natural gas and air, In another important test, test 4, the explosives charge to fired into a mixture of natural gas, air, and coal diet. To satisfy the permissibility requirements, the explosive must undergo throe gallery teats without igniting gas or coal duet. Other tests also are required for permissibility, but they do not come within the scope of the present paper, which studies the factors affecting the incendivity of explosives when fired into methane, air, and/or coal-dust mixtures. Many transmission towers, high-rise buildings and bridges are supported by piles. These structures may be subjected to large lateral loads. Therefore, experimental investigations on model piles under lateral loads were conducted in uniform dry sand. Small-scale model tests were carried out considering the influence of pile length, pile diameter, sand density, roughness of pile surface and vertical load on the lateral resistance of a pile. Furthermore, the effect of pile load eccentricity (e/L) on the ultimate lateral resistance was studied. Investigations, of the influence of various parameters on the magnitude of the coefficient of subgrade reaction (nh), were also performed. It was found that the lateral load capacity of piles increases with increase in pile length, pile diameter, pile surface roughness and increase in the sand density. The results also showed that the coefficient of horizontal modulus of subgrade reaction, (nh), decreases with deflection increase. From the results, the coefficient of subgrade reaction for a smooth pile embedded in medium dense sand would decrease by (134%) when the lateral pile head deflection (yg) changes from (2% to 5%) of pile diameter.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed Cu exchange capacity (CuEe) tests on Ca and Na mont-morillonites and attapulgite clays. Mathematical models were developed from the data that the CuEe's are derived from for each clay as a function of pH, Cu concentration, and the concentrations of metal ions, which compete with Cu for exchange sites. An analysis was made of the impact of competing ions on Cu losses due to ion exchange. The results show that the CuEC's of clays, and hence Cu losses, are decreased by the presence of competing ions, and that AI and Mg have the largest impact of those cat-ions normally present in Cu leaching solutions.

The operation of flotation plants has been improved over the years by use of fundamentally based design techniques, a better understanding of reagent chemistry, online metal analysis and the use of digital control systems. However, optimal operation of flotation banks is not consistently achieved using manual operation. The reason for this is that the system is a highly interacting one, with changes in air addition, cell interface level and reagent dosages all being available, without it necessarily being clear as to which change should be made for a particular situation.This situation is made more complex by the fact that the feed to a flotation bank can vary in flowrate, composition and density over a fairly short period of time. It is not possible for a human operator to reject these disturbances, given the extent of the operation that is typically being monitored.Model predictive control (MPC) is a control and optimisation technique, developed in the oil refining industry, that aims to manage just such interacting multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. This technology makes use of linear dynamic models of the plant, that are experimentally derived. These models are then used in a receding horizon strategy to determine an optimal trajectory of the inputs to the system.MPC has been applied to four areas of the lead zinc flotation unit at Mount Isa mines. A total of 31 cells are being controlled by the system, which varies air to the cells, levels and reagent addition on a minute-by minute basis. The MPC controls concentrate and tail grades, reagent dosages, as well as recoveries to ranges set by the plant metallurgists.The development of the MPCs is discussed, together with the benefits realised. "The use of Artificial Ground Freezing (AGF) for temporary soil strengthening and seepage control is an effective alternative to grouting when dealing with soils whose degree of finesses would imply the use of highly expensive chemical grouts. However, compared to grouting, the application of this improvement technique usually needs a more accurate preliminary soil investigation campaign and a design assisted by specific calculation software. Besides a general description of the main features of this technique, the paper will describe a recent application of AGF carried out in Rome to underpass an existing metro station.INTRODUCTIONNatural ground freezing occurs seasonally or permanently (permafrost) in some areas of the globe close to the poles and can negatively affect the engineering performance of underground structures. On the other hand, Artificial Ground Freezing (AGF) is man-made controllable freezing process that can be used in foundation engineering to temporarily strengthen the ground and create a barrier to the passage of groundwater. During the process, the heat is extracted from the soil in a cylindrical shape around a number of freezing pipes installed into the ground. This action produces columns of frozen soil, which expand gradually till they merge and create continuous frozen wall. The thickness of this barrier can be regulated according to the specific project requirements. Nowadays, AGF technique is applied to a wide range of foundation engineering problems where soil stability and groundwater flows are an issue (Pimentel et al. 2011, Haß and Schäfers, 2013). Typical applications include the temporary stabilization and waterproof of the ground around the excavation profile of mined tunnels until the construction of the final lining (Figure 1).The case history described in this paper deals with a recent application of AGF carried out during the construction of metro Line “C” in Rome. Specifically, this technique has been applied to allow the construction of two single-track mined tunnels running underneath an existing metro station belonging to Line “A”. In that case, the AGF has been evaluated by the Designers as the only possible solution for improving the mechanical and hydraulic characteristics"

"The Dez River flows from the Zagros Mountains into the great Khuzestan plain, Southwest of Iran. The 203 m high Dez Dam is a double curvature thin concrete arch dam, with a Pulvino, founded on thick bedded to massive conglomerate of Bakhtiary Formation, mainly horizontal and very less jointed at the dam site. Construction work was completed in 1963, creating a reservoir with a total storage volume of 3’315 million m3. The dam body, with some 350’000 m3 volume and (W/H=1.1/1.0), is the dominant feature of the project.Geological and geotechnical studies at the dam site started in 1957 and continued during the whole period of dam construction. Simultaneously, two extensive programs of laboratory testing were carried out in New York and Milan.Most of the results were recorded in the project design documents and in two very well-known papers of Talobre et. al. (1964) and Dodds (1966), however, no detail results are available for most of tests.In order to estimate geomechanical parameters of the rock mass foundation for numerical modeling of the dam body and its foundation, reassessment of the in-situ and laboratory test results using the recent rock mechanics methods was required.This paper explains how the outcomes of those tests, performed more than 50 years ago, were reevaluated and how the definitions and parameters presented in the project reports were re-interpreted using the recent rock mechanics concepts and definitions. Also, the results of classification of Bakhtiary conglomerate using GSI system and application of Hoek & Brown failure criterion for estimating rock mass parameters have been described.INTRODUCTIONThe Dez River flows from its headwaters in the Zagros Mountains into the great Khuzestan plain. "A coal bump is characterized by the sudden failure of one or more pillars and an associated release of kinetic energy. Although the geologic conditions surrounding coal bumps are often similar, their occurrence and magnitude are difficult to predict. This paper presents the development of an approach to assess the potential for coal bumps in room and pillar mines through the use of energy concepts and special consideration of the interface properties between the coal and overlying rock. Back analyses were performed on the widespread collapse of a room and pillar mine with an associated 3.9 local magnitude seismic event. Pillar and mine-scale models were constructed using the distinct element method to simulate the mining stages leading up to the collapse. A variety of loading conditions, material properties, and interface properties were evaluated for their effect on unstable failure of single pillars, and the mine-scale model was used to study the evolution of failure during progressive mining. The extent of unstable failure was quantified in these models by calculating the total kinetic energy released during each mining stage. Through the parametric analysis of single pillar models, it was found that softening parameters in either the coal or the coal/ rock interface can individually facilitate unstable failure of pillars, but the combination of the two in a single model produced a much higher release of energy during failure. The results of the minescale model further illustrated the trend as the combination of softening parameters in the coal and coal/rock interface produced a series of failures that most accurately reflected the collapse event at the mine. The method of room and pillar stability analysis demonstrated in this study effectively explores the potential for large coal bumps.IntroductionThe analysis of coal pillar behavior is challenging because natural variability in geologic conditions requires estimation of material strengths and predicted loads for a given mining situation. Large width-to-height (w/h) ratio pillars and deep overburden present an additional challenge, as the failure behavior of such pillars is more complex and may involve unstable, sudden collapse. Empirical methods have improved the success of coal pillar design for a wide range of conditions, but, for deep cover and squat pillar (w/h > 10) geometries, pillar performance predictions are not as accurate (Mark, 2000). As with any empirical approach, more back analysis and the consideration of new variables may help improve understanding and accuracy of future designs."

A laboratory apparatus (shield dust simulator) was designed and constructed to simulate the dust generated during the advance of longwall hydraulic roof supports, or shields. The objective of the study was to develop a tool that could be used to test the hypothesis that foam applied to a mine roof prior to a shield advance could be used to reduce the respirable dust generated during shield advances. This paper will outline the design parameters for the development of the system, as well as describe baseline testing of coal and limestone dust. Results show the average instantaneous respirable dust concentrations that occurred during simulated shield advance. Confidence intervals were calculated from the instantaneous respirable dust data to determine the repeatability of the data produced by the device. INTRODUCTION During longwall mining, miners can be exposed to respirable dust that is generated during the advance of hydraulic roof supports or shields. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers have conducted numerous surveys of longwall mining operations, benchmarking the operating practices and dust control measures in use. It has been determined that the shields are responsible for 27% of the respirable dust that is generated on the longwall face [1]. The dust generated by the shield advances ranks second, next to the longwall shearer which is accountable for 43% of the respirable dust generated on the longwall face. The respirable dust generated during the advance of the shields can be a significant contributor to the respirable dust exposure of the mining personnel operating at the longwall face, especially since some of this dust is generated in the walkway. Control systems designed to reduce the dust levels generated during the shield advance have the potential to greatly reduce the respirable dust exposures of the personnel downwind of these activities. One control technology to decrease the dust generated by the shield advances would be to apply a layer of foam to the forward shield-roof interface prior to the shield advance [2]. The blanketed layer of foam would interact with the material located on the top of the shield during the advance, preventing a portion of that dust from becoming entrained in the mine air. This layer of foam would be applied using a foaming nozzle located on the longwall shearer body that would spray foam on the roof surface as the shearer passed. Substantial laboratory work has been completed to determine the feasibility of this type of foam application. NIOSH engineers have classified the various characteristics of foaming agents, using foam expansion ratio and drainage as important properties, as well as developed the mechanical systems required to apply the foam safely to the mine roof [2, 3]. The construction of an apparatus that could simulate the mechanical interaction between the dust-laden shield top and mine roof was necessary to adequately test the hypothesis that foam could be an appropriate control. A team of engineers designed and constructed a shield dust simulator system allowing for in-house testing prior to a full-scale field investigation.

The thermodynamic properties of hedenbergite, of composition [(Ca0,9516) (Mg0,0583Fe2+0.7134 Fe3+0.0934 Mn0,1366) (Si206)], were experimentally determined at the Bureau of Mines. The standard enthalpy of formation determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry is AHf298 = -680.96±0.855 kcal/mol. The standard enthalpy of formation from the oxides is AR-96 = -24.55±0.485 kcal/mol. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined by adiabatic calorimetry from 12.3 to 300.1 K. The derived standard entropy is S-98 - 41.218±0.148 cal/mol-K. High-temperature heat capacities were measured with a differential scanning calorim¬eter from 397 to 1,147 K. These experimentally determined data were combined with data from the literature to calculate the Gibbs energies of formation and equilibrium constants of formation over the temperature range of measurements. Standard enthalpies of formation are given as a function of temperature. The standard Gibbs energy of formation at 298.15 K is AGf298 = -641.90±0.86 kcal/mol.

Os parâmetros influenciadores do processamento mineral para a concentração magnética, como granulometria das partículas, fluxo de alimentação da polpa, susceptibilidade magnética, atuam de forma conjunta em uma planta de beneficiamento. Foram analisadas amostras de polpa contendo sulfetos de níquel, cobre e metais preciosos em seis amostragens objetivando medir a eficiência de um separador magnético de tambor de 750 Gauss em um circuito primário de britagem. O rendimento do equipamento na planta industrial foi comparado com os parâmetros medidos em laboratório. Os resultados obtidos da granulometria médias das partículas da polpa para 80% e material passante (P80) foram: 150 µm, 300 µm, 163,6 µm, 146,1 µm, 287,5 µm e 164,8 µm, e a taxa de alimentação do circuito variou entre 30,2 tph e 55,2 tph, com pressão de lavagem média de 1,0 kg/cm3. As amostras foram submetidas ao balanceamento metalúrgico utilizando o software Bilmat 9.5, após os resultados dos ensaios de caracterização: ICP-metais básicos, Satmagan e LECO-S. O percentual médio de recuperação magnética do laboratório foi de 80,1%, enquanto na planta a média foi de 96,38%, com a eficiência da planta em torno de 20,8% superior à recuperação magnética em laboratório.

COMPLETED in November, 1943, at a cost of over $1,500,000, Elk River colliery of the Crow's Nest Pass Coal Company, Limited, has been laid out and equipped for an ultimate annual production of 1,000,000 tons and replaces the recently closed Coal Creek plant, which has been operated by the Company for the past forty-five years. The project has involved the opening of mines in three seams, the construction of a complete set of colliery buildings, including a modern preparation plant of 360 tons per hour capacity, and the laying out of the necessary yard tracks and spur connecting the new development with the Company-owned Morrissey, Fernie and Michel railway, which, in turn, connects with the Canadian Pacific railway at Fernie. The colliery is three and a half miles east of Fernie, B.C., near the southern end of the Crow's Nest coal field, which contains the largest and most important body of coal in the Province of British Columbia. The coal-bearing horizon is the Kootenay formation, present in the form of a syncline covering an area of 230 square miles. Most of the coal seams occur in the lower 2,000 feet of the formation, the covering beds being largely coarse sandstones and conglomerates of great thickness, the presence of which accounts largely for the preservation of the coal measures. James McEvoy, in the report of the Geological Survey of Canada for the year 1900, states that the basin appears to contain a fairly constant coal content of nearly 172 feet in 23 seams of a thickness of one foot or over. Coal has been mined in the Fernie district since 1897 and the first shipments were made from Coal Creek colliery in the following year, over the then newly constructed British Columbia Southern railway. Since that time, a total of over 16,000,000 tons of coal has been produced, an average of 350,000 tons per year. The7ears of peak production were 1910, 1912, and 1913, with an all-time high of 924,000 tons in 1913. The lowest output in the history of Coal Creek was that for the year 1933, when only 60,340 tons were produced, the colliery being closed for some months. Present production from Elk River colliery averages 1,150 tons per day, the output being considerably less than it could be were sufficient man-power available.

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 15,174-acre Sleeping Giant study area, including the 6,112-acre Wilderness Study Area (MT-075-111), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Lewis and Clark County, MT, about 30 miles north of Helena. Sleeping Giant Mountain trends west-northwest from the Missouri to the eastern crest of Little Prickly Pear Canyon (the route of Interstate 15), and has several summits over 6,000 ft. Geologically, the area is in the Disturbed Belt, and a large block of Middle Precambrian metasedimentary siltstone and underlying shale has been thrust northeast over younger, sedimentdry volcanic and intrusive rocks.

There are some 30 known varieties of asbestos but of this number only 6 are of economic importance, and these, in order of economic significance are chrysotile, crocidolite (or blue asbestos), amosite, anthophyllite, actinolite and tremolite. Chrysotile asbestos was formed by the introduction of hydrothermal solutions into fractures in serpentinised ultrabasic host rocks. These solutions dissolved magnesium silicate from the wall rocks, and with subsequent lower temperature and pressure they became supersaturated, and crystals of chrysotile asbestos formed. The chemical composition is variable but is classified as a hydrous magnesium silicate, containing a high percentage of magnesia and water, plus varying amounts of alumina and ferrous and ferric iron. Other asbestos minerals are formed by a similar process but with a different host rock e.g. crocidolite occurs only in iron' formation. The chemical composition of asbestos minerals other than chrysotile, shows a wide variation, but in general may be classified as silicates, or metasilicates, containing varying amounts of calcium, magnesium, sodium and iron.

"A growing public awareness of work-related diseases such as pneumoconiosis and the impact of this awareness on legislative bodies and on the skilled labour market are reasons why the Canadian mining industry must consider dust control of top-drawer importance. Measurements and standards related to the hazard are necessary to control a dust situation and to avoid excessive risk. The author discusses some of the methods of measurement, standards proposed and terminology used in this developing technology. The purpose primarily is to give a better understanding of the basic advances achieved by those who have applied current knowledge with a measure of success."
