Part I describes the general geology of the Florida deposits. As the lucrative Bone Valley Formation is depleted, replacement production will move progressively into areas of total Hawthorn production. The reserves of the immediate future are a mixture of two distinct ore types referred to as the upper (high grade) zone and the lower (low grade) zone. The upper zone is somewhat similar to the Bone Valley Formation that has been Florida's source of production for the past 100 years and will respond favorably to present beneficiation practices. By contrast, the lower zone ore contains significant quantities of dolomite that must be removed in order to produce an acceptable grade pebble or flotation sized product. Part II reviews past practice and describes future trends in mining and ore transportation. This presentation (Part III) is confined to the problems of beneficiation, waste disposal, and environmental regulation.

The concept of æsustainabilityÆ can largely be defined as development that will not compromise the ælivabilityÆ of the planet for future generations. It has multiple dimensions, such as the triple bottom line û environmental, economic and social. And it also includes temporal (now and the future) and spatial (local and global) aspects that have to be taken into consideration to achieve true sustainability.Energy sustainability might be defined as û having the light turn on when you push the switch. It has, of course many more dimensions than this simplistic definition. Coal in Australia has an important role in keeping our lights on, but has its problems that need to be tackled head on to maintain a role in sustainable development.An overriding issue in terms of sustainability for coal is its major contribution to our greenhouse gas emissions. Whilst we have one of the most effective energy sectors in the developed world, based on well-managed, abundant fossil fuels, our greenhouse gas emissions are one of the highest per GDP in the developed world. We have to reduce our ægreenhouse gas signatureÆ.This paper explores the issues of coal utilisation greenhouse gas emissions as an indicator of the fuelÆs sustainability and the potential lower emissions pathways we will have to follow in a future carbon-constrained world.The technology changes will have significant implications for the minerals industry and it is argued that forward-looking coal/greenhouse emissions strategies need to be developed in alliance with the coal (and energy) sector for the minerals industry to maintain its global competitiveness.

Classification of rock and coal is one preliminary problem for fully automated or intelligent mining. It assists in automated rib stability analysis and enables the shearer to adjust the drums without human intervention. This paper studies the classification of rock from coal on rib images using machine learning techniques. A database of rock and coal images was created by filtering photographs taken by NIOSH researchers during site visits. Machine learning was conducted on patches, smaller images randomly extracted from each rock or coal image. After training, the classifier was validated with the testing dataset and achieved an accuracy score of 0.9.

"Considerable information is available on the factors influencing the iron-zinc reaction rate at 450° C of low carbon steels, in comparison there is a scarcity _of similar fundamental information of spheroidal graphite irons. This can be attributed to the more complex microstructure and ferrous alloy chemical analysis of spheroidal graphite irons. Hot-dip galvanizers have identified the complexity in controlling and predicting the thickness of the galvanized coating formed on commercial cast irons, which has serious financial implications for both the galvanizer and customer.Commercial hot-dip galvanizing has been in use for over 160 years and yet an elementary understanding of the dynamics associated with the hot-dip galvanizing of spheroidal graphite cast iron is still insufficient. To allow the. process to become a modem surface engineering technology, the fundamental aspects of the process must be thoroughly understood.When a clean iron or steel article is dipped into the molten zinc, zinc initially solidifies around the steel or iron. As heat is transferred to the article form the bath, this initial solidified zinc layer remelts and a series of iron-zinc alloy is formed by the reaction of the zinc with the surface of the article; on removal from the bath, some of the molten zinc is taken out on top of the alloy layers. At normal galvanizing temperature (450 °C), the reaction between iron and zinc is usually parabolic with time. The rate of reaction is rapid at first but then slows down and the coating thickness does not increase greatly if the article is immersed in the bath for longer times(1)."

This paper will discuss the operation and maintenance of Molycorp's Quests Mine ore conveyor system. The 1.2 m wide, steel cable-reinforced conveyor belts are capable of transporting 1089 kt/h of ore over a belt line distance of 3124 m with a vertical rise of 518 m. A portion of the conveyor runs in a 2057 m long underground decline on a 10° slope. Six 448 kW motors power the main 1.2 m wide belts.

An essential component to the management of any process is the measurement of key parameters, used to monitor, control, and provide the feedback necessary for improvement. This paper discusses how data collection and analysis can provide a better understanding of the blasting process, as well as additional control and improved outcomes.The drill and blast process involves the generation and use of information at a number of levels. Comparison of historical parameters and results provides a starting point for the development of ongoing blast designs and a baseline against which future results can be compared. The collection of data during implementation provides a quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) function where potential defects (such as under-drilled or over-charged holes) can be rectified prior to firing. Actual quantities and production rates allow the development of realistic plans and schedules, rather than using inaccurate estimates and targets that lead to unscheduled changes to equipment paths. Over?the past several years there have been a number of technological advances in data collection technology. Drill monitoring instrumentation on blasthole drills provides location information and feedback on rock properties as drilling occurs. Hand held ‘data logger’ technology has also overcome the challenges of working on the bench, such that blasthole measurements can be collected and forwarded directly to the explosive truck. Mine sites are becoming wireless network-enabled allowing the seamless data transfer from the field back to the office, in near real time, as that information is collected. Great strides have also been made in the development of drill and blast software systems which are more user friendly, and yet provide far greater capability to manage the quantity of data generated. The blasting process is critical to the overall mining process and the delivery of a successful blast outcome requires that the blasting process be ‘in control’. The measurement of key parameters can provide the data with which to measure and maintain control of blasting, and allows the validation of performance improvement measures and identification of improvement opportunities.

After review of the status of research on optirnisation of retreat longwall faces it is argued that an acceptable optimisation model must be based upon realistic cost data that take into account not only the face costs, but the total panel costs. These include the cost of development, face cost, removal and installation cost. The determined optimum length of a retreat longwall face is based upon a realistic model and actual costs.Parameters that influence the optimum face length have been varied over wide limits to allow determination of the sensitivity of the model and the effect of the parameters on the optimum face length. It is concluded that for medium production rates and medium system availability, the optimum face length of a retreat longwall face under Australian conditions lies between 180 and 220 metres.

This Bureau of Mines study, part of a broad program of research in air pollution related to minerals, was conducted to determine the nature and extent of the poisoning of catalysts when used to remove certain air pollutants from exhaust gases. The poisoning examined in this investigation occurs when leaded gasoline is used as a fuel for automotive engines. This research was conducted in cooperation with the Public Health Service. The smog in the Los Angeles area is attributed to the effect of radiant energy on the mixture of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides found in the atmosphere there. A large portion of the hydrocarbons is believed to originate in the exhaust gases of automobiles. To prevent the escape of these hydrocarbons into the atmosphere catalytic mufflers have been proposed. In principle, these are simple and nonmechanical, consisting of a vessel charged with a catalyst capable of destroying the exhaust hydrocarbons by catalyzing their oxidation. However, these catalysts are severely affected by the particulate matter, mainly in the form of lead sulfate (PbS04), lead oxysulfate (PbS04.Pb0), and Lead chlorobromide (Pb(Cl,Br)2), contained in the exhaust gas. Deposition of lead on the catalyst as PbS04, PbS04, PbS0, and Pb(Cl,Br)2 restricts catalytic activity. As a result,after 20,000 miles of operation the temperature necessary to achieve 50-percent conversion of isopentane in a mixture of 0.2 percent isopentane, 2 percent carbon monoxide and 4 percent oxygen, and the balance nitrogen at 10,000 hourly space velocity has risen from 400° C. to 500° C. even with a catalyst taken from the exit portion of the catalyst bed. The rest of the catalyst was more severely affected. Therefore, it would appear that operation for 20,000 miles is near the limit for a catalyst.

"There has been a revolution occurring in underground mining over the last several years, where big headline items such as the Internet of Things (IoT), optimisation, managing data, data mining etc – the list of current catchphrases, goes on. In the end these are nothing new; but the ‘things’ (sensors) are becoming smaller, cheaper and easier to deploy, and the analysis much more powerful as computer processing speeds increase. However, to take advantage of the myriad of devices out there and gain the processing power to analyse and use the data, a reliable ‘conduit’ is needed for that information to be delivered where it can actually be used. That is, a high quality data network.Modern mining is like any other industry in the information age: the access to reliable data is the first, critical step in improving productivity (Stevens, 2015). The convergence of communications onto an IP (Internet Protocol) backbone has been the driving force in enabling the productivity gains in general industry over the last two decades.This paper overviews how this technology has developed as an enabler in accessing productivity and safety benefits, and how it has used access to large amounts of data to manage mining processes underground. Reams of data are useless, but with the reliable receipt, analysis, processing and feedback system in place to use that data, benefits can be realised.Automated mining systems are increasingly being seen as a key requirement for a productive mining operation, and the importance of an integrated communication network infrastructure to support such systems is growing. Another emerging driver is the much talked about IoT and data analytics, both dependant on reliable, accurate, high volume data.The author will outline how communication infrastructure is fundamental to the operation of such systems, and explain why the resultant communication networks require much more than just increased bandwidth (data capacity) to properly support the automation and other data hungry systems within the overall mine operation.Mining operations embarking down this road are discovering that the required network must be based on a true enterprise level architecture to, not only enable the mine’s current plans for remote or automated mining, but also to provide a scalable and integrated platform for future developments. The emerging issues for the communication network to truly support automation systems include: increased complexities of operating and maintaining multiple networks integration issues with disparate systems problems with reporting, particularly as demands for corporate reporting and compatibility with enterprise systems become the norm ongoing management challenges, which will only increase with the proliferation of new technologies.How certain mining operations lay the necessary foundations to meet their current requirements, while supporting their visions for a more automated and proactively managed mine, will be explored.CITATION:Kent, D, 2017. "Excessive deformation of a cantilever sheetpile wall can occur due to dredging, excavation, backfilling, or long-term creep behavior of soil. A buttressing berm constructed in front of the wall can be considered as a mitigation technique to prevent or decrease the deformation by increasing the passive earth pressure and thus improving the wall stability. The effect of the buttressing berm on the stability and deformation of a sheetpile depends on the berm geometry (i.e., the thickness/depth and the width) as well as the properties of the sheetpile and the adjacent soils. A parametric study was conducted using a conventional limit equilibrium method. Design charts were prepared to evaluate the effect of a buttressing berm and the soil friction angle on the wall stability and deformation. These charts can be used as a tool by geotechnical engineers to make a quick estimate of the required size of a buttressing berm in case of calculated or unexpected excessive deformation of a sheetpile. An analysis of the effect of a buttressing berm on the stresses and deformation of a sheetpile was also compared with the results from finite element analysis. The results of this comparison are discussed.INTRODUCTIONCantilever sheetpile walls are commonly used to support excavations. Sheetpiles are hot rolled or cold formed sections of steel made to interlock with adjacent sections to form a continuous structure providing lateral support. Sheetpile walls can be cantilever walls or anchored with tiebacks. To construct a cantilever sheetpile wall, sheetpiles are driven by pile drivers or vibrated in to a design depth sufficiently below the depth of excavation. Excavation can then proceed in front of the sheetpile wall, which resists the earth pressure loading from behind the wall. The design depth and geometry of the sheetpile wall depend on the soil conditions, the depth of excavation, and the tolerable deformation. In certain cases, when a small buttress of soil can be left immediately adjacent to the sheetpile wall, the required depth or geometry of the sheetpile wall can be reduced or adjusted, which can significantly decrease the cost of procuring and installing the wall. Such a buttress can also serve as a short-term or long-term remedy in case of observed excessive deformation in a constructed wall. Traditional methods of analyzing the stability of a sheetpile wall do not account for the passive pressure effects of this small buttress. In this paper, a parametric study was performed for a variety of soil types and wall and buttress geometries by implementing traditional limit equilibrium methods in commercial software and design charts were created illustrating the effect of a buttressing berm on sheetpile deflection. Selected cases were then modeled in a finite element software to compare the results with the traditional limit equilibrium method. The resulting design charts can be used as a tool by geotechnical engineers looking to reduce the design geometry of a sheetpile wall or address observed excessive deformation in a constructed sheetpile wall."

This Bureau of Mines report presents results of an underground evaluation to determine the respirable dust and gas control effectiveness of a combined (push-pull) face ventilation system for coal mines. The system utilizes both blowing and exhaust curtain, continuous miners equipped with radio remote control, and flight conveyors. Bureau of Mines tests showed a 97% reduction in respirable dust concentrations from the usual cab position on the continuous miner to the remote control operator's position. This allowed the remote control operator to be well within, and the usual cab position to exceed, Federal respirable dust standards. Tests utilizing a safe tracer gas, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), to determine the face ventilation effectiveness of the combined blowing and exhaust system showed that the system also has excellent methane dispersion capability. Where wide entries permit, this combined face ventilation system and use of remote control can be a very effective method for dust and gas control.

How do you portray a large structurally and stratigraphically complex deposit to return a meaningful resource estimation, and produce a geological model that is useable for planning on a daily basis? The George Fisher Mine is located 22 km north of Mount Isa and forms part of XstrataÆs Zinc Group operations. It is currently a major producer of zinc, lead and silver in the region with an estimated total resource for all categories of 127 Mt at 100g/t Ag, 5.3 per cent Pb and 9.2 per cent Zn (June 2005). Production in 2005 totalled 2 647 492 wet tonnes for 317 699 kg Ag, 140 317 tonnes Pb and 230 331 tonnes Zn from underground operations. George Fisher (GF) consists of two deposits that are structurally complex on a mine scale, George Fisher North (GFN) and George Fisher South (GFS). Regional faulting has resulted in a 2 km long package of variably pyritic shale and siltstone that separates the deposits. This paper looks specifically at GFN. Distinct correlations exist between the two deposits based on stratigraphic matches; however, orebody characteristics, geometry and fault architectures differ significantly between the two. The deposits consist of multiple, sedimentary-hosted, stratiform orebodies from 2 to 25 m wide, separated by waste intervals of variable width. Each ore-waste interval is modelled as an individual geological domain. Structurally, George Fisher North (GFN) contains a series of major late-stage NE faults with dextral offset(s) of up to 130 m. Further complexity is added by NS, NW and NNE striking fault orientations that can produce either a loss or repeat of stratigraphy, local drag folding, orebody attenuation and block rotation. Due to this structural complexity and orebody offsets, domains at GFN are further divided into fault blocks (FB). The GFN model comprises eight FBs over a strike length of 1 km, all of which are modelled independently. As drilling progresses and additional resources are converted, further FBs will be added at major fault offsets to accommodate orebody and model expansion. This will be in addition to what is already a large and time-consuming data set to manage and update. For example, each FB has 18 domains each with two constraining wireframes (hanging wall and footwall). Each wireframe has several sets of point data depending on the type of data available, ie diamond drilling, mapping or interpretation points. This equates to over 1100 separate files to manage. Additional wireframes and files are also required for major structures, daily planning requirements and block model runs. In total some 1500 files are managed, updated and maintained for GFN alone. The ongoing need to expand as a business and optimise production in the current economic climate where there is a global demand for metal has led to an increase in production at GF. This has resulted in a rapidly growing data set and highlights the importance of practical and efficient modelling to achieve a meaningful resource estimate. This paper focuses on the geological modelling, modelling approaches and techniques employed for the GFN deposit.

Certain commercial telephone test equipment was modified and a tone source and switching circuit were developed for use in the testing of mine pager phone systems. Descriptions are included of the modifications to a commercial test set and of a tone source/ switching unit.

"The effect of metal cations on the rutile flotation using styryl phosphoric acid (SPA) as the collector was investigated by micro-flotation test, bench scale flotation test, zeta-potential measurements and adsorption measurements. The micro-flotation results indicated that Fe (?) and Al (?) ions in low concentrations had obvious activation on the rutile flotation, and Pb (?) ions in low concentrations had smaller activation of rutile, but Fe (?), Al (?), Pb (?), Ca (?) and Mg (?) have strong inhibition of rutile flotation in high concentrations. The bench scale flotation results indicated ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), boracic acid, and sodium hexametaphospate can decrease the metal ions concentrations, and increase the recovery of rutile flotation. Adsorption measurements and zeta-potential measurements revealed that Fe (?), Al (?) and Pb (?) ions were adsorbed on the rutile surface, and had interaction with SPA. But when these ions concentration were over the largest adsorption capacity, residual metal ions could occur chemical reaction with SPA.INTRODUCTIONRutile is one of the favored minerals for production of titanium dioxide white pigment, primarily through the chloride manufacturing process (Stanaway 1994; Hou et al., 2013) However, the majority of rutile ores belong to refractory ores, while flotation is one of the most efficient methods to separate fine rutile from gangue (Dolbear et al., 1937). With the flotation development, many effective collectors were successfully applied in the oxide ore. Many reviews have indicated that organic phosphonic acid collectors showed good selectivity on oxide ores such as ilmenite and rutile (Bulatovic & Wyslouzil 1999; Liu & Peng 1999).It is inevitable that many types of metal cations are present in ore pulp. These metal cations significantly influence the flotation of minerals. Liu et al. (2015) showed that Ca2+ and Mg2+ could improve the floatability of spodumene at pH 12.5 and 10.0, respectively. The authors proposed that Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions readily form hydroxy complexes (CaOH(l) and MgOH(l)) and precipitates as (Ca(OH)2 and Mg(OH)2) in strongly alkaline solutions. Fan and Rowson (2000) investigated the effect of Pb(NO3)2 addition as an activator on ilmenite flotation and showed that it could improve ilmenite floatability. The addition of Pb(NO3)2 resulted in an increase of ilmenite zeta potential in both weakly alkaline and acidic aqueous solutions. Mehdilo, Irannajad, and Rezai (2015) studied three kinds of ilmenite of different origins and discovered that both Mg and V had a negative correlation with ilmenite flotation, while the Mn content seemed to correlate positively with flotation efficiency. A number of studies have also showed that Fe3+ can improve the floatability of ilmenite (Fan et al., 2009; Nuri, Mehdilo, & Irannajad, 2014)."

Large infrastructure projects like tunnel excavations, underground constructions face innumerable risks. For successful completion of these projects, it is essential that we foresee and understand risks that could occur during different phases of the project. One of the risks affecting underground excavation projects is the inaccurate performance prediction of TBMs. As this could severely affect the project, resulting in lower advance rates and could also result in changing the excavation machine or method, due to difficulties in excavation, thereby increasing the overall cost of tunnelling. This makes performance prediction of the TBMs as one of the crucial aspects in tunnelling, as a precise estimation of its performance is required for planning and estimation of time and cost of the tunnelling projects. This performance prediction of TBM is a challenging geotechnical problem that is intricate and complex in nature, this is possibly due to the fact that TBM performance prediction involves understanding the rock fragmentation process in wide range from micro-scale (i.e. the interaction of surface of rock material and cutter tip) to macro-scale (including the interaction of rock mass and TBM). Thus in order for the performance prediction model to be efficient, parameters of both TBM specifications and ground conditions have to be considered. Various models have been proposed by researchers since the early phases of TBM application, these studies resulted in the development and improvement of numerous penetration prediction models. Most of these models consider the geotechnical parameters that are input to the model to be consistent along the TBM drive and neglect the uncertainties in parameters that occur. And so to improve the predictive capability of these models and to incorporate the above uncertainties, the penetration rate is modeled as a stochastic variable depending on the geotechnical and TBM parameters, its statistical distribution is determined and is used to characterize the penetration rate instead.

"Underground structures are an integral part of the infrastructure of modern society and are used for a wide range of applications, including subways and railways, highways, not at least nuclear facilities. When the wider area is subject to earthquake activity, underground constructions should be analyzed on seismic and static loading. Observations showed that the underground structures have significantly less seismic risk than surface structures. Available methods allowed analyzing the magnitude of risk for different input parameters of seismic loads in different ground environment. Simulation of earthquake loading on underground structures, in the present paper is given the various aspects of analyzing the potential damage and instability of underground facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe development of methods and computing resources used for para-seismic engineering has finetuned the evaluation of the seismic strength of buildings and equipment. Reinforcements may therefore be decided, not simply on the basis of a reassessment of the hazard, which constitutes input data for the calculation of structures and equipment, but also on the basis of developments in para-seismic engineering. Underground facilities are an integral part of the infrastructure of modern society and are used for a wide range of applications, including subways and railways, highways, material storage, and sewage and water transport and not at least nuclear facilities. Although in the past showed that the underground structures are significantly less seismic risk than on the surface, the professional researches and their results are accessible. Seismic resistance of underground structures is analyzed from several aspects. The currently available methods allowed analyzing the magnitude of risk for different input parameters of seismic loads in different ground environment. For better interpretation of earthquake loading on underground structures, are given below the various aspects of analyzing the potential damage and instability of underground facilities in rock. One of the early studies which covered this are of investigation were prepared by Dowding and Rozen (1978). They grouped damages due to earthquakes in underground structures into three main categories:- damage from ground shaking- damage from fault dislocation- damage by earthquake-induced ground failures (e.g. liquefaction and landslides)."

In this Bureau of Mines study, two fluidized-bed reactors were designed, built, and operated, one as a sorber for S02 and the other as a contactor for the regeneration of the sulfur-laden alkalized alumina. The target of 90 percent removal of S02 from a flue gas stream containing 0.3 percent S02 was attained by using a sorbent feed of 10-15 grams per minute into a 5-inch bed depth of alkalized alumina. The sorption unit was operated at about 330° C. Complete regeneration of the laden alkalized alumina containing 5 to 10 percent sulfur was accomplished in approximately 1/2 hour. An excess of reformed propane at about 730° C was the regenerating gas. Attrition losses, a major problem with this sorbent, ranged from 0.9 to 7.9 percent of the inventory. Data from these tests demonstrate, within experimental error, the validity of equations developed from short-term, thin-bed tests related to sorption and regeneration rates.
