This program involves the evaluation of means for suppressing fires on underground coal mine conveyor belts. Full scale conveyor belt fire tests were conducted to determine the requirements of automatically actuated water sprinkler, high expansion foam, and multi-purpose dry powder extinguishing systems, and of various fire detection devices, necessary to adequately protect underground belt heads. The program included the development of a suitable MI scale conveyor belt test fire, conducting of fire tests in which extinguishing and detection systems and equipment were evaluated, and testing to evaluate the effects of the coal mine environment on detection equipment. Preliminary testing conducted to develop a suitable test fire revealed that fire can propagate on some conveyor belting classified as fire-resistant. New fire-resistant PVC and new non-fire resistant rubber belts were used in the full scale fire tests. These tests indicated that a single branch line sprinkler system with relatively low water pressure provides adequate belt head protection. High expansion foam and multi-"purpose dry powder extinguishing systems as presently specified by regulation were found to be suitable for belt head protection, although care is required with powder systems to assure adequate distribution. Thermal type detection devices were found to be most practical for conveyor belt protection, with combustion products and optical detection methods having serious disadvantages.

Experiments dealing with the dissolution of silver by cyanide from various silver minerals-were reported, several years ago.4/ This work showed that the silver in some silver minerals is completely and readily soluble in cyanide solution, whereas other silver minerals must be given special treatment before or during cyanidation to obtain much dissolution of the silver by cyanide. Flotation as a method for treating silver ores has not been studied much, except in the case of base-metal ores carrying silver, Particularly lead-silver ores. However, many mills now are concentrating gold ores by flotation, and when such ores also contain silver the recovery of the silver by flotation is of considerable importance. Moreover, many mines contain ore in which silver is the principal valuable constituent. Some of these ores are amenable to cyanidation, but the cost of a cyanide plant may be prohibitive because of limited ore bodies or other factors. In such instances the successful application of flotation would mean that the property could be operated.

By 1980, the U.S. mining community had reached a broad consensus regarding coal pillar design. The pillar load could be estimated from tributary area theory, and the pillar strength from empirical formulas and laboratory coal strength testing. Then the growth of longwall mining required new thinking. Recently, powerful design methods have emerged from analysis of large data bases of real-world pillar successes and failures. These include the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), the Mark-Bieniawski rectangular pillar strength formula, and guidelines for preventing massive pillar collapses. Sophisticated numerical models have also helped transform the pillar design landscape. In the process, our understanding of pillar mechanics has been greatly enriched.

The shear strength properties of generic cement foam material and cement foam/concrete interfaces were examined at three testing scales. In laboratory direct shear tests on specimens with average shearing area of 0.006 m2 (10 in.2), the cement foam material had average peak and residual shear strengths of 0.88 MPa (128 psi) and 0.39 MPa (56 psi), respectively. Depending on the concrete strength, the cement foam/concrete interfaces had peak and residual shear strengths ranging from 0.71 to 0.81 MPa (103 to 117 psi) and from 0.27 to 0.29 MPa (39 to 42 psi), respectively. In laboratory direct double shear tests on specimens with average shearing area of 0.084 m2 (130 in.2), the cement foam/concrete interfaces had average peak and residual shear strengths of 0.17 to 0.30 MPa (25 to 44 psi) and of 0.11 to 0.23 MPa (16 to 33 psi), respectively. In large shear tests of simulated cement foam seals with the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) test frame, cement foam/concrete interfaces with shearing area of 1.486 m2 (2,304 in.2) had average shear strengths of about 0.08 and 0.16 MPa (11 and 23 psi) along the roof and floor interfaces, respectively. The average shear strength through the cement foam material was 0.38 MPa (55.3 psi). Finite element analysis of the large seal tests and the back analysis of the shear strength of full-scale cement foam seals conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory confirmed shear strength of about 0.14 MPa (20 psi) along the seal/rock interfaces. The study concluded that the structural analysis of cement foam seals should be based on their residual shear strength determined from small laboratoryscale tests of the cement foam/concrete or rock interface and not be based on their peak strength.

Ground support audits are sometimes necessary in ageing underground mines. Usually, the purpose of such audits is to assess the state of the ground support in various parts of the mine, identify areas that require attention and establish rehabilitation requirements. In 2005, Brunswick Mine, located in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada, completed a comprehensive mine-wide ground support audit. The areas examined included excavations in several mining blocks, as well as ramps, shaft stations, garages, shops, etc., throughout the mine. A vast amount of data was collected over a period of two weeks by multiple auditing teams. The audit was followed by a data digitisation exercise, and the creation of a data management system to store audit results and keep track of subsequent rehabilitation activities as they occur. One aspect of the data management system was the incorporation of a function for reporting on ground rehabilitation progress, along with the capability of updating mine level plans for easy visual presentation of this progress. This article describes the approach implemented at the mine to carry-out the audit, as well as the database constructed to manage the results.

The Portland beryl-mica district, Middlesex County, Conn., comprises three deposits investigated by the Bureau of Mines in 1943. The Gotta-Walden deposit is in a pegmatite dike 4 to 20 feet thick, which cuts gneiss and schist. In general, the hanging wall is rich in mica and beryl with some feldspar, quartz, and garnet. The central core is usually high in quartz and feldspar, with relatively little mica and beryl. The footwall comprises quartz and feldspar, with varying amounts of mica and some beryl. The beryl crystals range in color from green to almost golden and have a maximum diameter of inches. Results of surface trenches indicate a beryl content of 0.81 percent for the pegmatite. A small production of beryl, feldspar, and scrap mica has been made from the deposit.

"INTRODUCTION AND RESUMEThe Reward zinc property was one of the first selected for exploration by the Bureau of Mines at time when zinc supplies for war production were very short. Preliminary examination indicated that an appreciable tonnage of zinc that could be developed for early production might be found by diamond drilling. The geology was mapped by the Federal Geological Survey, and 14 holes were diamond drilled by the Bureau of Mines. This work was started in September 1942 and completed in September 1943.The Reward is an old property in southwestern Pinal County, 26 miles from Casa Grande on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Mining was begun in the early 1880's and was continued intermittently by several operators to about 1917. About 400,0oo pounds of copper was produced from the north¬eastern part of the property, mainly from a 600-foot incline in oxidized copper ore that replaced a bed of limestone. This ore was mined out. A 400-foot vertical shaft in the copper area was inaccessible. A 325-foot vertical shaft had been sunk near the southwest end of the zinc-bearing area, and a 600-foot crosscut tunnel had been driven near the northeast end of the zinc area, but little zinc ore was produced. There were several shallow inclines and numerous surface pits between the main workings.The ores were deposited in Paleozaic limestones that strike northeast and dip about 40 degrees northwest. These are capped by Cretaceous clastic and volcanic rocks in the zinc area. The outcrops show mineralization in a segment of the limestone 4,500 feet long, which is limited by large cross faults at each end. Another large fault, which strikes north, separates the northeast third of the mineralized belt from the remainder. Copper predominates northeast of this fault and zinc southwest of it. The ore beds are cut by numerous small cross faults. Ore was deposited for short distances along some of these, but more of it made out from the fissures along certain replaceable limestone beds."

"A successful procedure for the recovery of a valuable product from weathered tank-bottom settlings has been developed in the laboratories of the Bureau of lines and used in a field pilot plant. These heavy emulsion settlings, generally regarded by the industry as waste material, have usually been drained into open pits or storage ponds and eventually destroyed.Laboratory examination of the waste material shows it to consist essentially of a ""water-in-oil"" emulsion containing a considerable volume of congealed ""paraffin."" This paraffin is mainly high-melting-point wax; known in the industry as microcrystalline wax, for which there is an increasing demand.Because of the physical properties of this wax, the tank-bottom settlings are not responsive to conventional methods used for demulsifying ordinary crude-oil emulsions.The work upon which this report is based was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with -the Kansas State. Board of Health and with special cooperative agreements-with the Cities Service Oil Co, Bartlesville, Okla., and the Bareco Oil Co,. Barnsdall, Okla. This circular presents part I of a review of the literature on effects of breathing dusts, with special reference to silicosis, largely in the minim; and allied industries. The literature on this subject is so extensive that no attempt has been made to include all published material but only to assemble some of the more outstanding data on several aspects of the subject. Parts II and III will deal with prevention and treatment of dust diseases and some of the economic and legal aspects of dust diseases in industry, with special reference to mining. Dust diseases arc much before the public at present, and there is good reason to believe that the information on the subject available to the layman is extremely meager; even those rated as experts usually have a more or less theoretical conception of the diseases, their causation, remedies, and prevention, rather than actual experience with them. Until recently little attention has been given to prevention, and the usual attitude of the engineer, upon whom the main reliance for prevention ultimately must devolve, has been to let "sleeping dogs lie" or, more definitely, to "let well enough alone." However, the "laissez faire" attitude no longer is tenable, and in the past few years numerous conditions have caused those engaged in industry, including mining, to bring the subject before the public with a view to ascertaining the facts upon which to formulate remedial measures, primarily preventive.

Innovative solution management is being used at Coeur-Rochester Inc. to increase bullion production and decrease overall costs. New operating programs call for reduced solution application rates to the heap that increase pregnant stream values at a lower and less costly plant flow rate. Silver and gold extractions are equal regardless of leach solution application rate. Solar heating is used in the summer months to increase the core temperature of the heap for use in the winter months to enhance the silver extraction rate. The Coeur-Rochester silver and gold mine, located in central Nevada, is an open pit, heap leach operation that has been in production since late summer of 1986. The facility produces about 15.4 kt/d (17,000 stpd) of -13 mm (-0.5 in.) ore to a leach area consisting of more than 37 hm2 (4 million sq ft) of 80 ml HDPE liner. Crushing is accomplished with a 1220x 1520-mm (48- x 60-in.) jaw crusher. This is followed by a single 2.1-m (7-ft) standard cone crusher and is completed with four 2.1 m (7 ft) short-head cone crushers. Agglomeration is not required for the crushed ore, which contains less than 10% -75. µm (-200 mesh) material. The ore contains 53 g/t (1. 55 oz per st) silver and 0.377 g/t (0.011 oz per st) gold. It is end dumped over previously leached material, leveled, and then ripped with a bulldozer. Drip emitters at 810 mm (32 in.) spacings on 910 mm (36 in.) centers are used to apply barren solution to the heap. A portion of the emitter lines are buried I m (3 ft) deep during the winter months and are placed on the surface the remainder of the year. The leach solution contains 0.75 g/L (750 ppm) sodium cyanide solution at a pH of 10.5 - 11. Dissolved oxygen averages 8 ppm in the pregnant solution. Cyanide consumption for the ore to date is just under 0.2 kg/t (0.4 lb per st). The pH control is accomplished by adding I kg/t (2.0 lb per st) 0-10 mm (-0.4 in.) pebble lime to the ore at the tertiary crusher. The pregnant solution is processed by a conventional closed circuit Merrill-Crowe system. The pregnant solution is clarified through three 158 L/sec (2500 gpm) US Filter Auto-jet clarifiers. Mine haul roads degrade rapidly due to extreme loads on suboptimal construction materials. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are suited to quantify large-area road-network conditions, such as surface roughness, defects and grade to optimize remediation of poor conditions and reduce overall costs. Mine haul roads present unique challenges, such as material type and edge characteristics, to automatic road detection that often fails, requiring manual road input. This research work proposes a new method using the road center determined by the principal curve of a haul truck’s path. Analysis grids were created from this center line. A dense point cloud from UAV photogrammetry was generated and multiple linear regression analysis was conducted on each individual grid. The root-mean-square error in each grid indicates the surface roughness, and the change of slope between grids indicates the road grade inconsistencies. This method was applied to 26 road sections, and the results were validated by images taken from the truck operator’s vantage point. Critical defects were identified including excessive pothole formation, corrugation, depressions retaining water, and narrowing of travel lane. The results demonstrate this is a valid method of road identification and quantification of road defects at a mine site.

Systematic drilling & blasting techniques are currently being viewed in the mining & construction industry as a correct 8z scientific approach for optimization process in rock excavation, as drill & blast costs usually represent major share in total cost of production and also the environmental impacts plays an important role in designing of the operations. Designing a blast is a complex planning task, which for optimization, includes deciding the bench geometry with respect to the rock properties & geology of the area, capacity of the excavators, choice of explosives & detonation method, tiring sequence, etc. Optimization of blast design needs a detailed comprehensive study of all the above intersecting elements. Preblast & Post blast surveys are required for further improvements in blast designs. However, the choice of blast design depends upon the the requisite blasting results opted for and the cost you are ready to pay for the same. The blasting operation, in general, also involves numerous side effects namely, ground vibrations, fly rocks, dust, noise & gas pollution, air blast effect etc. Again these effects can be made tolerable up to a certain extent depending upon the limitations of the environmental obligations as may be specified by the concerned authorities.

Argentina follows Venezuela and Mexico as the largest producers of crude petroleum and natural gas in Latin America. Argentina 1S practically self-sufficient in fuels, but relies substantially on imports for its supply of copper, iron ore, ferroalloys, sulfur, and fertilizers. Mining activity is limited and is in an incipient stage of growth, considering the country's potential for mining. Most nonfuel mineral output in 1979 consisted primarily of minerals used for construction, while only 9% are other nonmetallic, and 2% are metallic minerals. Argentina is Latin America's major producer of boron minerals and uranium (yellow cake). Mineral exports consist primarily of borates, uranium concentrates, and of late, some tin. These exports have in the past been shipped mostly to Great Britain. London banks have been involved in arranging financing for St. Joe Minerals Corp. IS planned development of the El Pachon copper deposit (see map), and were being counted upon to also back the development of large copper and manganese projects. The following is a review of Argentine mineral production in 1979: (For 1981, the production of boron minerals is put at 167,000 metric tons and uranium at 300,000 metric tons.)

Early in 1912, from information received by the Bureau of Mines, it became evident that quantities of valuable radium-bearing ore from Colorado were being exported for manufacture in foreign countries and that at least part of the manufactured product was being returned to this country and sold at a price entirely incommensurate with that received by the miner and the prospector. Consequently, in line with its efforts to increase efficiency in the mining and treatment of mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of conditions. Results of this preliminary investigation were published, in the summer of 1913, as Bulletin 70,a which gave an outline of the radium deposits of the West, the conditions of mining, the wastes involved, and the status of the production of radium from its ores. At about this time newspapers and medical journals were publishing statements regarding the value of radium in cancer therapy. These reports, although many of them were exaggerated, brought out clearly the remarkable virtue of the gamma rays for the treatment of cancer and other malignant growths. In view of the fact that the largest known supplies of radium ore in the world are in the States of Colorado and Utah and on the public lands of the United States, it was deemed highly important for the Bureau of Mines to study the production of radium in detail. Such study, it was hoped, would enable the prospector and miner to obtain a fairer price for the ores and would furnish information necessary in case Congress appropriated funds to develop methods for extracting radium from ore on the public lands under Government supervision, to be supplied at cost to the hospitals of the Army, Navy, and Public Health Service.

During the past quarter century, coal mine geologists have evolved from providing a qualitative description of drill core and coal reserves into quantitative geotechnical specialists who bridge the gap between geology and engineering. In the late 1970?s and early 1980?s, hazard prediction mapping was in its infancy. At best, hazard maps identified rudimentary structures and conditions such as stream valley locations, sandstone/shale transition zones, and lineaments. A ?technical disconnect? had existed between geologists and mining engineers as each profession operated largely independent of each other. Engineers did not readily integrate geology and geologic conditions, with the exception of coal thickness, into mine planning. Geologists were relied upon for reserve estimates and did not participate in mine planning or design. The employment and market slump of the 1980?s and 1990?s combined with mining more challenging reserves mandated that this gap be bridged and forced geologists to learn to speak more ?numerically? to engineers so they could be understood. The purpose of this paper is to describe the procedures and thought processes used by coal mine geologists when determining various mineability and reserve extraction feasibility issues. The paper will also address underground geologic hazard mapping and prediction techniques. To achieve these objectives, the opinions and experiences of leading coal mine geologists, geotechnical and strata control specialists across the United States were solicited.

Y.-In the historical part of the development of the caving system discussed by Mr. Blackner, I notice the absence of one man's name, Charles Henroten. Mr. Henroten used the caving system in South Africa in the. Kimberly mines, and realized from his work there that ground would cave when properly prepared. I think it is due him that his name should be mentioned in connection with an exposition of this system in America.

Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of general accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.
