The concentrations of methane and coal dust vary from one location to another in underground coalmines. In the presence of an ignition source, such as static electricity, these mixtures can initiate explosions and consequently cause massive destruction. Research data can help in understanding the level of hazards and associated risk these flammable mixtures can produce. For instance, the level of peak explosion pressure and flame speed can be well understood from experimental and numerical research data. With this aim, methane–air mixtures and methane-coal dust-air mixtures were employed in a ducted spherical vessel. According to literature, the maximum value of peak explosion pressure can be obtained in vessels of spherical geometry when compared to vessels of other geometries. Thus the values of explosion parameters generated from spherical vessels can be incorporated in understanding the highest level of hazard that can occur in a real world scenario.In this study, the duct integrated with the vessel resembles any channel or pathway connected to a methane and/or coal dust rich area in the mine. Experimental investigations emphasise that the severity of explosion in the explosion zone transmits to the channel or pathway. The length of the channel or pathway also plays an important role on the values of explosion parameters. The greater the length of the channel or pathway, the higher the explosion pressure is and therefore the higher the destruction. Ignition energy and concentrations of methane and coal dust were varied in collecting experimental data. Tin deposits in Catron County, New Mexico, were explored by the Bureau of Mines under authority of the Strategic Minerals Act of August 1939. The investigation covered both lode and placer deposits and was later extended to deposits in Sierra County. Six of the known deposits were examined by E. D. Gardner, supervising engineer of the Southwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, and S. G. Lasky, a geologist of the Federal Geological Survey, in June and July 1939. It was recommended that the more promising occurrences be explored by test pitting, trenching, and sampling. Field work, under supervision of M. E. Volin, began in September and continued through December 1939. The area was mapped by Carl Fries, Jr., of the Federal Geological Survey, in 1939 and 1940. The La Cruz Development Co. acquired control of the Squaw Creek placer claims in 1942 and began active sampling and development preliminary to large-scale operations. The result of this work showed a considerably higher tin content than that found by the Bureau of Mines in 1939. Because of this report and reports from other parts of the district that large-scale operations for the production of tin from lode deposits were possible, it was recommended that the Bureau of Mines resample parts of Squaw Creek and conduct a mill test of lode material to determine whether a concentrate could be made that was high enough in tin and low enough in iron to be acceptable in American smelting practice. This work, under the supervision of Paul L. Russell, was begun in November 1942 and completed in January 1943, during which time the Sierra Metals Co. acquired control of a large area in Sawmill Canyon. At the suggestion of the Federal Geological Survey and the War Production Board, which had reason to believe that a great deal of commercial material existed on certain flatlands and gully slopes, the project was extended to include test pitting and sampling of those areas. This work was completed in February 1943.

In contrast to pyrometallurgy's 6000year history in metals production, hydrometallurgy is of relatively recent origin. The earliest reference to it was in the 16th century, with the first applications to copper in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 19th century, increased demands for pure metal resulted in the development of electrolytic refining, and early in this century electrowinning. The rapid growth in copper production in the 20th century, particularly in the United States and Chile, stimulated the development of new technology for leaching and for the recovery of copper from leach solutions. In the past 25 years, solvent extraction has become a major factor by permitting novel leaching technology that produces dilute or complex solutions. In addition, solvents other than sulfuric acid, and chemical methods for precipitating copper metal are now of increasing interest. These are trends that should grow in importance with the need to process lower grade and more complex materials. The evolution of copper hydrometallurgy is reviewed. Key factors in recent major developments are presented with details of specific operations and with trends for the future indicated. The relative importance of copper hydrometallurgy is compared with that of pyrometallurgy in the light of probable changes in ore supplies and character.

The location of seismic events in mines is traditionally calculated based on the arrival times of P- and S-waves for a given velocity model (homogeneous or heterogeneous). This technique is successful when the sources of seismic events are sudden and localised (eg episodes of fracturing in solid rock or dynamic slip along a plane of weakness) and thus the radiated seismic waves have clear arrivals. In massive mining operations such as block caves, strong seismic signals often originate from the movement of loose rocks on the perimeter of the fracture zone. These signals are easily recordable but do not contain easily identifiable direct P- and S-waves, making the estimation of location through traditional methods more complicated. This problem has been approached by using a ‘brightness’ location method that estimates the origin of seismic waves based on travel times of envelopes of seismic energy. This tool is extended to be applicable in a heterogeneous velocity environment that now accounts for the presence of a cave or other strong velocity perturbations. Technical decisions, blasting costs, operational efficiency and productivity and equipment performance can all be related to optimum fragmentation. In the past, the lack of an easy, non-disruptive, economical measuring technique has meant that, in most cases, rock fragmentation has not been defined in quantitative terms. Now, the Split-Desktop@ software provides an economical alternative to manual sampling and screening and an objective measure rather than subjective qualitative estimates. This workshop will present the latest features of the Split-Desktop@ software and show users how to quickly get quantifiable results from their blast fragmentation. A step-by-step demonstration will display the software’s flexibility, user-friendly options, and ease of use. Outlining where other mines have benefited from using the Split-Desktop@ software will provide insight to a wide range of software uses and potential applications like creating a database of geologic zone specific post-blast fragmentation information, underground draw point monitoring, stockpile, leach pile, and waste dump size measurement and monitoring, as well as many other applications.

Successful mineral exploration is the lifeblood of the mining industry. Contrary to what the environmental lobby would have the world believe, the industry is replacing the metals it is extracting. The reserve base has not changed significantly in 20 years (Fig. 1.) Mineral exploration is a research activity. First there is the idea, the vision or the intuitive thought. The experiments follow. These involve repeated phases of data gathering, data interpretation and concept testing through drilling. For many companies, exploration is the main investment in scientific research. Each mineral exploration experiment may involve years of costly work. Despite the improving tools of science and technology, the investment remains high-risk. Only the promise of high rewards, or desire to survive as a mining company, will stimulate the necessary commitment and level of investment. Confidence that an economic return can be achieved, confidence in the science and technology being applied and confidence in the people involved are the foundations upon which successful mineral exploration is built (Woodall, 1984). The challenges facing the explorationist in the 1990s fall into two categories: - the challenge to make the activity economic; and - the challenge to make the activity socially and, therefore, politically acceptable.

"The Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite. At the end of 2009, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. At high pH values (above 10.5), forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response. Given this, the pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 and it was found that there was a slight increase in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold. With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t. This reduction in lime is equivalent to approximately $700,000 per annum at current production rates.INTRODUCTION The Xstrata Copper Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) is situated 38 km north east of Cloncurry, Australia. The mine began as an open-cut operation in 1998 and transitioned to a multi-sourced operation in December of 2011, utilising ore from the newly completed underground mine in addition to ore mined from the Mount Margaret Mining operations. EHM produces a combined copper gold concentrate containing 25 000 t of copper and 35 000 oz of gold annually, utilising a three stage grinding circuit along with a four stage flotation circuit. In addition to this EHM also produces 1 000 000 t of magnetite concentrate annually via a further grinding and three stage magnetic separation circuit. Based on metallurgical test work performed by Magotteaux between 2002 and 2008, the step to change from forged steel media to 18 percent chrome media was taken in 2009 in a bid to alter the pulp chemistry to improve the flotation performance in the plant (Greet, Kinal, Twomey, & Peatey, 2010). This plant trial resulted in: • Increased dissolved oxygen levels within the pulp, • A ball mill discharge Eh shift of 25 mV to more oxidising pulp potentials, and • An EDTA extractable iron percentage reduction. These improvements in the pulp chemistry resulted in an increase of 1.7 ± 0.6 percent in copper recovery and an increase of 2.9 ± 1.7 percent in gold recovery. As the plant trial using high chrome media was successful, the use of the media was adopted as the standard for the ball mill. This implementation opened the door for further process improvements around the flotation circuit."

Due to increased production of fine coal during mining during this century and inefficient fine coal recovery technologies, a vast reserve of high quality coal currently exists in refuse ponds. A novel fine coal circuit consisting of a hindered-bed classifier, an enhanced gravity concentrator and a flotation column has been evaluated for the recovery of fine coal from refuse ponds. The treatment of a pond derived from Pittsburgh No. 8 seam coal resulted in the production of a premium fuel containing less than 5% ash and a calorific value of about 30,173kJ/kg with 60% mass yield. The results from the treatment of two refuse pond materials will be presented in this publication.

The project now under construction will comprise a 1.2 km long raw water aqueduct, a major new 0.25million cubic metres per day water treatment works (with space for upgrading to 1.2Mm³/d), a 12.1 km long treated water aqueduct and a primary service reservoir. The DOT Tunneling method combines two conventional earth pressure balance shield machines in an overlapping cylindrical arrangement. The method allows two tunnels to be driven simultaneously with mini¬mum cross sectional area. Two full size trials, one configured horizontally and one vertically stacked, were successfully completed employing the DOT method. The method was then utilized for the new transportation system. The goggle-shaped DOT machine, 9.36 m high by 15.86 m wide, is the largest earth pressure balance shield machine in the world. This paper includes a general description of the DOT tunneling method as well as a history of its development.

The Owner Procurement Process or OPP is a proven, viable alternative contract delivery method that is potentially applicable to many tunnel projects. Using the OPP, the owner specifies and procures major tunnel construction items such as tunnel boring machines and tunnel linings and provides them to a tunnel excavation contractor in order to manage risk and accelerate project schedule. However, due to industry perceptions regarding potential owner risk, it is seldom considered or is rejected out of hand. In fact, past performance demonstrates that the process significantly minimizes owner, contractor and over-all project risk and mitigates the impact of any claims and differing site conditions. The paper outlines how the process should be structured to achieve schedule, cost, quality and risk management benefits. Potential and perceived disadvantages are discussed and how the process can be structured to mitigate or avoid them. The planned implementation of this process on the tunnels for the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in San Jose, California is discussed.

"This document compares the systems of coal classification described under ASTM standards used in Canada to GB standards used in China. A preliminary connection of metallurgical coal classes was set up between the two classifications. In GB classification system, there are nine metallurgical coal groups, namely PS, SM, JM, FM, ½ ZN, RN, 1/3 JM, and QM used in coal blending for coke production. PS coal is almost equivalent to the Low Volatile Bituminous coal; SM, JM, and FM coal groups fall into Low to Medium Volatile Bituminous range; ½ ZN, RN, 1/3 JM, and QM are equivalent to bituminous coal with medium to high volatile matters; QF contains higher volatile bituminous coal compared with High Volatile Bituminous coal. The caking properties commonly used in respective country are also compared in this document. These properties include free swelling index (FSI) and maximum fluidity used in Canada, as well as caking index (GR.I.), and the maximum plastic layer thickness (Y) mainly employed in China. It has been observed that the log of the maximum fluidity has a stronger correlation with the caking index than the Y values. Metallurgical coal processing strategy and typical coking coal product qualities are briefly discussed in the last section of this paper. Currently there is a trend to use heavy medium cyclone in both countries. In Canada the conventional two-product cyclone technology is the preferred practice; whereas in China the three-product heavy medium cyclone arrangement is widely used.INTRODUCTION Coal can be simply classified by applications into two categories: i) thermal coal used to provide heat energy in combustion, and ii) metallurgical coal which is converted to coke, in a carbonization process, and used mainly in the iron and steel industry. Metallurgical coal contains even higher heating values than thermal coal. In addition, it presents unique plastic properties during carbonization which in turn produces a porous solid, high in carbon referred to as coke. Coke is one of the most important raw materials in the iron and steel industry."

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and the principal component of natural gas. Coal seams often contain significant quantities of methane, and underground coal mines must ensure that methane released into the mine during coal extraction does not build to dangerous levels. This is accomplished in part through the use of large-volume ventilation systems that remove methane from the mine and release it to the atmosphere. Although the methane concentration exhausted is quite low (typically <1 percent), the volume of air that ventilation systems move is so great that they actually constitute the largest source of methane emissions from underground coal mines. Each year underground coal mines throughout the world emit more than 500 billion cubic feet of methane from their ventilation systems. An air pollution control technology, thermal oxidation using a flow-reversal reactor (TFRR), has emerged as a potential solution to ventilation air methane (VAM) emission mitigation. One manufacturer of TFRRs has demonstrated its oxidizer design (the VOCSIDIZER?) at coal mines in the United Kingdom and Australia. These demonstrations tested the technology?s effectiveness at oxidizing low-concentration methane, as well as its ability to tap the excess heat to produce steam for electric power generation. In early 2007, the first U.S. demonstration of this technology began operation at an abandoned mine in West Virginia. The project is designed to prove the technology?s operational robustness, its ability to reliably oxidize methane at concentrations typical of mine exhausts, and its safety. If the technology is employed at active underground coal mines, it offers the potential to mitigate substantial quantities of global methane emissions. This paper discusses global VAM emissions, options for the recovery and utilization of VAM, and existing projects such as WestVAMP in Australia and the ongoing U.S. VAM demonstration project.

Underground depillaring of contiguous coal seams/sections is a difficult problem, which becomes even more complex if the interburden/parting between them is thin. Conventionally, the depillaring with caving of contiguous seams/sections is done in descending order. However, if the parting is thin, the influence of the top sections/seams working over the standing pillars of bottom the sections/seams becomes extremely important for the safety and optimal exploitation of coal. Field investigations were carried out at Nowrozabad East mine where superimposed pillars of the Johilla top section were depillared above the developed pillars of the Johilla bottom section with a 3 m thick parting between the two sections. The competency of the 3 m thick parting (which consists of alternate layers of shale, sandstone and shaly sandstone) was improved by reinforcement (underpinning). The strata control investigations did not show any considerable instability problem of the 3 m thick reinforced parting and pillars of the bottom section due to top section depillaring. On the basis of this field investigation and a laboratory study on simulated models, simultaneous extraction of both the sections, along with reinforcement of the parting, was suggested for the geomining conditions of the Johilla top and bottom sections. Adopting the suggested simultaneous depillaring process, two sub panels of Johilla top and bottom sections have successfully been extracted without any strata control problem. This paper presents this case study along with the results of the strata monitoring conducted to evaluate performance of the underground structures during the field trial.

BM37 is a bonanza-grade (&gt;30 ppm Au) ore shoot of the Maria Lode of the Karangahake adularia-sericite epithermal deposit in the southern Hauraki Goldfield. Samples from BM37 contain up to weight percent gold. The ore shoot is a vein that pinches and swells, but is typically tens of cm thick, and locally exceeds 0.5 m in true width. Gold occurs as irregular anhedral electrum grains that range up to 300 microns across and contain 38 to 59 wt&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;Au (ave. 52 wt per cent&nbsp;Au). Electrum occurs in sulphide-rich bands in association with pyrite, chalcopyrite, acanthite, galena, sphalerite, and local covellite. Lower grade samples contain local to rare mckinstryite [(Ag, Cu) 2S] and polybasite [(Ag, Cu) 16 (As, Sb) 2S11]. Pyrite from BM37 is nearly stoichiometric; it lacks the As that commonly occurs at up to percent levels in pyrite from other veins in the goldfield. Acanthite also contains low quantities of trace metals, and typically has less than 2.5 per cent&nbsp;Se. The vein shows complex textures. Bonanza grade sulphide-rich ginguro bands form discrete layers adjacent to the vein margins, and occur as breccia fragments encased by later massive to comb quartz with local quartz after platy calcite. Both the breccia fragments and ginguro bands are cross-cut by later quartz veins. Textures thus indicate that formation of the high-grade portions of BM37 resulted from one or more discrete events that differed markedly from the events that formed the bulk of the vein.

"Crushing and grinding of ores and their beneficiation by washing away gangue minerals has been practiced since ancient times. Primitive crushing was done by hand pounding the ore with a hard stone then by using metallic hammers. The mortar and pestle was mechanized using a lever and when the size of operations increased in the middle ages, the stamp mill was introduced. The grindstone played an important role in grinding of ores. Panning for gold and hand sorting of minerals were two old methods of separation, now gave way to modern techniques. Flotation started in the middle of the nineteenth century by using oils to collect the mineral particles and float them on the surface of the aqueous slurry. It was only in the 1920s when it was discovered that organic compounds were affective floating agents. Textbooks written by distinguished engineers such as Rittinger, Rickard, Pryor, Taggart, Richards, Gaudin, and others contributed to the recognition of this field as a new discipline to be taught in Universities. INTRODUCTIONThe ancient Egyptians knew already that it would be easier to melt an earth rich in gold particles than another which is poor. As a result all efforts were made to enrich the gold by washing away the light gangue minerals (Figure 1). Another ancient method for enriching gold particles from a river stream was by means of fleece, hence the Greek myth of the “golden fleece”. The present day Georgia was known in ancient times as Colchis and was a center for gold working. It was known to the ancient Greek as the land of Golden Fleece. The use of special cloth to catch gold particles was also described by Agricola in his 1555 book De Re Metallica (Figure 2)."

This Final Report summarizes the results of work accomplished under Contract No. J0215039. It is in an executive overview or executive summary format. The number and description of the various technical reports prepared and submitted is outlined. The essential changes and reasons for the revised program schedule/contract modifications actually enacted in May 1982 are discussed in detail. The evolving mines/deposits list and the accompanying criteria classifications are explained along with the verifications/justifications for adding or deleting specific mines/deposits to the list. Difficulties and problems experienced during the different phases of the project in conjunction with the ensuing remedies are highlighted. The final section of they report is devoted to presenting Davy McKee&apos;s suggestions for improvements to future MAS commodity studies. Appendix I is comprised of three of the evolving mines/deposits lists starting with the original RFP list and ending with the final completed list. Appendices II and Ill are tabulated summaries of property data including reserves/resources, assays, production, and operating costs. The figures for the specific mines/deposits are given in "range of values" so as to protect the confidentiality of the individual owners/ operators.

Every few years we are treated to a battle over trade policy when the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act comes up for consideration. In 1962 it is especially appropriate to consider the problem of mineral import -policy and the closely related problem of general import policy, for this year&apos;s struggle is different from those of the past in two ways. First, proposals have been made which are a substantial departure from past trade agreements legislation, and second, the formation and growth of the Europe Economic is Community may have an important bearing on the kind of legislation that is adopted. But this anticipates what is to come later. My task is to examine the problem of mineral import policy, although we shall find soon enough that general trade policy must be considered in order to get an indication of what is in store for minerals.
