The crew at Crazy Horse Memorial has produced a w o n d e rful new video called “The Fine Art of Mountain Carving.” The video closely examines for the first time, the extraordinary explosives engineering on the Crazy Horse mountain currently in pro g ress in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The 56-minute video takes the viewer up the mountain for a behind-the-scenes look at the drilling and blasting crew at work on the mountain. The video was written, edited and produced by Robb D e Wall and is available exclusively from the Crazy Horse Memorial in both DVD and VHS formats. The SO2-ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach liquor generated by leaching of manganese nodules, after removal of minor quantities of iron and manganese, contained copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc and (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper from the leach liquor with LIX 84I, stripping of ammonia from the Cu-barren raffinate was carried out followed by precipitation of metal ions from the ammonia-stripped solution as sulfides. Leaching of the sulfide precipitate was carried out with H2SO4 to obtain a leach liquor containing 0.58 kg/m3 Cu, 2.67 kg/m3 Zn, 2.00 kg/m3 Co, 24.68 kg/m3 Ni and 10.0 kg/m3 (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper and zinc from the sulfate leach liquor with LIX 84I and D2EHPA, respectively, the solution was left with Co and Ni. Extraction of cobalt from the Cu- and Zn-free solution was carried out with 0.1 M PC88A and stripping of the cobalt-loaded organic was carried out with the cobalt-spent electrolyte (pH 1.4). Extraction of nickel from the cobalt-free solution was carried out with 90% neutral 1M NaPC88A followed by stripping of the nickel-loaded organic with 120 kg/m3 H2SO4 solution. Extraction of metal ions increased with increasing equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The maximum separation factors, with respect to the pH and extractant concentration variation studies, were 3796.7 and 15350.0, respectively. The extracted species for the metal ions were CoA2?3HA and NiA2?5HA.

Long before recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It is well known that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica-containing material have a great many uses in modern society. This material, however, is potentially an extreme health hazard. Silicosis: Not a New Disease Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. He was obviously describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. Silicosis was certainly described by Agricola in his De Re Metallica published in 1556. Here he described lung disease among hard-rock miners. The original document was written in Latin and then translated in 1912 by Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former US president who once made his living as a mining engineer. More recently, there are numerous references in medical literature in the 19th and 20th centuries relating silica exposure to silicosis. There are specific references to mining in hard rock, as well as to sandblasting and a host of other industrial exposures. In 1919, Winslow described standards for measuring the efficiency of exhaust systems in polishing shops using sandblasting. These standards were equally applicable in the mining industry. As early as 1920, Winslow explored the efficiency of certain devices used to protect sand-blasters against the dust hazard. These devices were equally applicable in the hard-rock mining industry. The medical community recognized the silica health hazard in the early 1900s. Middleton described the illness in the British Medical Journal in 1929. He noted the danger to health at that time. D. Hunter mentions in his book, The Diseases of Occupations (1969), the monumental work of Merryweather in 1936, in which he surveyed the silicosis risk in Great Britain. He showed statistically that the average employment length of sandblasters who ultimately died of silicosis was 10.3 years, compared to 40.1 years for all fatal cases, irrespective of occupation. Sandblasting and hard-rock mining and drilling, obviously, are very hazardous occupations. Weil and Zisking of Tulane University wrote in 1975 that "it was known as early as 1935 that the course of silicosis is much more rapid in sandblasters than in miners or foundry workers. This can be explained by the fact that sandblasters are exposed to an almost pure siliceous dust containing high concentrations of respirable particles within the range of 1 to 3 micron size." Protecting the Worker The medical community recognized in the early 1900s the need for proper protective equipment for all of those who worked with siliceous materials. Middleton, writing in 1929, said: "The worker is then protected by a close fitting helmet with an air feed, much as in the case of an underwater diver. In spite of these precautions, cases of silicosis among sandblasters are being met with today. It is a matter for serious consideration whether a substitute, such as steel or iron grit, could not be used to replace the siliceous grit as the abrading material." C. E. A. The progressive development of underground mines frequently requires increased ventilation flow rates through mine shafts that were originally designed for lower rates. Where these shafts are equipped with conveyances running on rope guides, the higher air flow rates adversely affect the lateral motion of conveyances and could cause conveyances to collide with the shaft walls or with one another. Hence the safety impact of higher flow rates requires proper assessment. This can be undertaken by use of computer simulation models to predict the dynamic motion of the conveyances during hoisting. It can also be undertaken entirely by field testing, or using a combination of simulation and field testing. This paper discusses these techniques and makes cautionary remarks about setting an absolute generic maximum flow velocity for all shafts. An understanding of the thermodynamics of smelting copper anode slimes is a prerequisite for improvements to the process. During slimes smelting, a silver-copper selenide matte is formed and subsequently oxidised to silver metal. As part of a series of investigations, molten silver selenide matte was oxidised at 1 100 degrees C with pure oxygen. The chemical potential diagram for the system was developed and used for qualitative prediction of the results of the experiments. A simple, computational thermodynamic model of converting is presented, the adjustable parameters of which were determined by matching the model with the experimental results. The practical usefulness of the model was demonstrated by predicting the effect on silver recovery of smelting temperature and of using either oxygen or air as the smelting gas

This paper presents recent advancements in the MillMapper software technology, developed and used for thickness gauging of liners of cylindrical grinding mills used for mineral comminution. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanner data captured inside a mill to determine thickness at several million points on all liner surfaces with millimetre accuracy. The paper is structured as follows. First, a review of the technology and its numerous advantages over existing techniques and the value it adds to operations are presented. These are followed by discussion of recently-implemented innovations, including improved visualisation and inspection tools, automatic ball charge volume measurement and automatic mill liner volume/weight measurement. Results from its application at several sites in Australia are presented throughout.

THE following paper has been prepared with the object of placing on record in the Transactions some facts concerning the present condition and future prospects of the coal industry of Illinois. In presenting it, the writer wishes to say that a considerable amount of the material contained is taken from the publications and records of the Illinois Coal Mining Investigations, the annual Coal Report of the State Mining Board, and the work of the State Geological Survey. Coal Beds and Mining Methods According to the latest maps of the State Geological Survey, there are only 19 of the 102 counties of the State some portion of whose territory is not within the borders of the coal measures. If outlying areas in Calhoun and Whiteside Counties are considered, the number is reduced to 17. This does not mean that all of the 85 counties that are partly or wholly underlain by coal measures will become producers, as there are some portions of the State in which the coal does not occur in beds of such thickness as to warrant the hope that it can be mined. The mining of coal is widespread, however, for in 1916 there was production from 51 of the 102 counties of the State. There seem to be no cases in which operations will be limited by depth, as none of the coal measures lie at depths much greater than those at which it has been proved that coal may be profitably mined in this field. In fact, the deepest shaft reaching a bed of bituminous coal in the United States is located in this State at Assumption, where coal only 3 ½ ft. (1.07 m.) thick is worked at a depth of 1004 ft.. (306 m.) The coal beds occur in the form of a basin which is deepest along a line extending through the central part of the State and bearing a, little west of north. The northern, western and southern borders of this basin lie within the boundaries of the State, but on the eastern side the Illinois field is continuous with the Indiana field. "A brief review of the Australian mining industry is given followed by a more detailed treatment of a study of the influence of primer Size on explosive performance. This is based on a joint research programme conducted by BHP Central Research Laboratories and Dyno Wesfarmers Ltd and examined the effect of the size of cast primers on the run up and steady state detonation velocitiesof ammonium nitrate based explosives as a function of blasthole diameter. The field trials examined a numter of the Dynamo 'Westfarmers HDF series of primers in conjunction with ANFO, emulsion and watergel explosives. Results indicate that the iun up velocity of 187 mm diameter ANFO charges is negligible using cast primers as small as 150g. However, emulsion and watergel explosives did exhibit run up in both 187 and 3:1mm diameter blastholes, independent of the size of primer. This could last from 7 to 10 blashole diameters"

In Xian, China, compaction by means of soil (or lime-soil) piles is one of the effective methods widely used for densifying loess and eliminating its collapsibility. However, as a result of groundwater table rising, it is no longer applicable in many areas. This paper is the summary of the first-time use in Xian of sand-gravel compaction piles aimed at densifying the miscellaneous fill (already partially under water) and saturated loess at a certain project site. In-situ tests, conducted before and after the treatment and including several kinds of penetration tests backed up and confirmed by a set of plate loading tests, yielded very satisfactory results, strongly testifying to the viability of the method.

A paper was presented by Bateman Minerals and Metals at INFACONX (2004) describing a simplified Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Model for predicting the temperature and velocity distributions in all the fluid zones of a single electrode DC Furnace simultaneously with the temperature distributions in the refractory lining of the vessel. The boundary conditions imposed on the model consisted of the arc current, external surface film coefficients and ambient temperatures. The temperature and velocity distributions in the free-board, slag and metal were solved simultaneously by coupling across the interfaces between the fluids and transportation phenomena developing in the plasma arc. A simplified model was used to describe the ex-change of energy by radiation between the arc and surfaces enclosing the freeboard region. The strengths of this model were reported as being the ability to: ?Solve the different zones and transportation phenomena simultaneously without the need to transfer partial numerical results between different numerical analysis applications. ?Solve velocity and temperature distributions without assumptions regarding internal film coefficients and additional internal temperature boundary conditions. One of the disadvantages of the model was that the energy absorbed by the process was not modelled, resulting in vessel performance predictions under heat loss conditions only. Whilst this allowed potential problem areas such as localized refractory heating to be identified, the model was only capable of predicting how these could be improved by varying the overall geometry and materials of construction. This paper presents improvements in the application software and user defined subroutines of the model as follows: ?Incorporation of surface to gas, gas to gas and gas to surface radiation models to improve the accuracy of radiative heat transfer mechanisms within the freeboard. ?Incorporation of a process energy absorption model based on a theoretical temperature dependant enthalpy curve which incorporates melting, smelting and superheating in selected areas of the bath. This enables the effect of feed distribution and power to feed ratio changes to be estimated. The effects of a commercial arc at full power on the freeboard and slag can now be simulated with increased accuracy.

The accuracy and precision of rutile analyses are discussed. Comparison is made between the wet chemical and X-ray fluorescence spectrographic methods of. estimating Ti02 in commercial rutile. Various allotropes of 'I'i02 are identified by diffractometry and a comparative analysis of the coloured varieties of rutile is given. For X-ray fiuorescence . analysis, specimen preparation is critical and sample grinding and pressures. for pellet making are discussed in detail.Cellulose bonded and backed pellets are shown to be subject to relaxation with increasing age.INTRODUCTIONTo date much of the analytical work on commercial samples has been done by wet chemical methods.This led to various discrepancies in results, which are of particular importance when certificates must be issued for overseas shipments. The present work reviews the nature of rutile and compares the results of Ti02 estimation by wet chemical methods and those obtained by X-ray fluorescence spectrographic analysis.In the rutile industry the results from different analysts and even those from the same analyst are not always consistent. To the analytical chemist this should not be surprising.Fairbairn (1951) showed the results obtained from 34 different analysts on a specially prepared sample of granitic rock. It is of some interest to note that the Ti02 content as determined by the 34 analysts using unspecified methods ranged from 0-17 per cent to 0·30 per cent. The NIOSH suite of coal mine ground control software addresses nearly every aspect of coal mine ground control planning, including geologic characterization, mine layout, pillar design, and support selection. Mine planners who use the soft-ware have access to the knowledge gained during years of NIOSH research—packaged in a simple, easy-to-use format. Several of these software packages have recently been updated and improved. Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS) (Figure 1) helps select the proper roof bolt system design from the immense variety of available bolt types and patterns. It was developed from statistical analysis of extensive bolt performance and roof fall data. New features in Version 2 include— • The capability to analyze roof bolt systems that use two types of bolts; and • A roof support cost module that estimates the total in-stalled cost of different patterns, considering the costs of consumables, labor, maintenance, and other factors. The Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) (Figure 2) can be used to make judgments regarding which secondary support system will be the most effective in a particular mine condition and to evaluate the advantages or dis-advantages of alternative support systems. Version 3.0 includes additional improvements: • Supports with large load-shedding following yielding can be designed based on the peak loading capability as well as the residual loading capability; • Seven new support systems have been added to the program; and • Easier access to photo gallery has been provided. The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) replaces com-plicated geologic information with a simple numerical rating that mine planners can use in many ground control applications. The CMRR can be readily integrated into a geologic exploration program, and the software package is capable of generating an AutoCAD CMRR "layer." Version 1.2 contains— • The complete CMRR database with more than 250 ratings obtained from 70 different U.S. coal seams; and • An all-new "Help" file that clearly explains all aspects of the program. Analysis of Horizontal Stress in Mining (AHSM) can help find the optimum mine layouts for control of horizontal stress. It can be used to analyze both development and longwall retreat designs, and it shows how the stress condition varies as the entry, crosscut, and panel orientations are changed. Version 2 features— • Improved graphics that enable the user to observe the effect of design changes without adjusting the display on the computer screen; and • Resource files containing information on stress map-ping, advance-and-relieve mining, stress measurements in U.S. coal mines, and other topics. THE flotation plant at Mount Lyell was erected, primarily, for the treatment of ore from the Lyell Comstock mine. These workings are situated over a mile in a direct line north of the North Mount Lyell mine, and are connected with the Reduction Work at Queenstown by a 2-ft. gauge steel tramway via the Queen River valley a distance of 7 miles. The property was purchased from the Mount Lyell Comstock Copper Co. After the disastrous fire in the North Mount Lyell mine in October, 1912, steps were immediately taken to make Lyell Comstock ore available for treatment, in order to relieve distress caused by any prolonged stoppage of work, and subsequently 13,032 tons of ore, averaging 3.38 %copper, 0.28 oz. silver, and 0.034 oz. gold; were smelted. When operations were resumed at the North Mount Lyell mine, it was evident that there was no economic advantage in smelting Lyell Comstock ore as compared with the higher value North Mount Lyell ore, which was also a better flux for the Mount Lyell pyrites, and that the future of the Lyell Comstock ore depended upon cheap mining and successful concentration of the ore. Therefore, extensive trenching and diamond-drilling was carried out, and a sufficiently large quantity of ore proved available for cheap extraction by open-cut methods. At the same time bulk tests by flotation were carried out at the Minerals Separation testing plant in Melbourne on different classes of ore from the Mount Lyell Comstock mine proper, followed by laboratory tests at Queenstown on all classes of ore available. All these tests demonstrated that the ore was amenable to the process, provided that it was ground finely enough. "By compiling geological, structural, geophysical, and geochemical information into a 3D geological model, we evaluated the orogenic gold potential in the vicinity of a hidden segment of an important Archean fault zone, the Cadillac-Larder Lake fault (CLLF) in the region of Rouyn-Noranda. The segment of CLLF in the present study is partly covered by Proterozoic sedimentary rocks. Because more than 2000 t Au have been extracted along the CLLF to date, our objective is to evaluate the gold potential at depth along a poorly known segment of this fault. A 3D geological model (50 km × 9 km × 1.5 km) including the covered segment was built through the compilation and homogenization of available geological data and the construction of 23 cross sections. The geology under the Proterozoic cover was evaluated using geophysical inversions, drill holes (42 in total), and surrounding geology. All available assays were filtered and upscaled to a 250 m × 250 m × 250 m regular cell grid to determine and quantify spatial relationships between geological features and mineralized occurrences using the weights of evidence method. Structural features, such as E-W-trending faults and fault intersections, and certain lithologies with a high primary porosity such as volcanoclastic rocks of the Blake River Group and Timiskaming sedimentary rocks, proved to be very prospective, yielding favourable factors with a weight of evidence index W+ > 0.24. These salient features were then assigned a combination index for ultimately evaluating the orogenic gold potential under the sedimentary cover. The zones resulting in an optimization of exploration targeting were attributed the highest probability, representing ~1% of the initial volume. La compilation des données géologiques, géophysiques, structurales, et géochimiques et leur intégration au sein d’un modèle géologique 3D a permis d’évaluer le potentiel aurifère dans les environs d’une importante zone de faille archéenne sous couverture protérozoïque. Cette méthodologie a été développée en utilisant le cas de la Faille Cadillac-Larder Lake (FCLL) dans la région de Rouyn-Noranda. Puisque plus de 2000 t d’Or ont été extrait à proximité de la FCLL, l’objectifs des travaux est l’évaluation du potentiel aurifère en profondeur de ce segment. Un modèle géologique 3D (50 km × 9 km × 1.5 km) incluant le segment sous couverture de la FCLL a été construit en utilisant l’ensemble des données géologiques disponibles et 23 coupes géologiques. La géologie du socle archéen sous la couverture protérozoïque a été interprétée avec des inversions géophysiques, des forages (42 au total) et les contacts géologiques exposés. Les teneurs aurifères dans le secteur ont été filtrées et ajusté à une grille régulière de 250 m × 250 m × 250 m afin d’évaluer et de quantifier les relations spatiales existantes entre certaines entités géologiques et les emplacements minéralisés en utilisant la méthode du poids de la preuve. Les failles de direction Est-Ouest, les intersections de failles ainsi que certaines lithologies possédant une porosité primaire importantes comme les certains tuf du Groupe de Blake River et les sédiments du Timiskaming se sont montrés très prospectifs avec des valeurs de W+ > 0.24. Ces entités géologiques ont ensuite été utilisées par le biais d’un indice de combinaison pour évaluer le potentiel en or de type orogénique sous le couvert sédimentaire. Cette méthodologie permet une optimisation des campagnes d’exploration puisque les zones pour lesquelles la probabilité de minéralisations a été évaluée à la plus haute valeur représentent 1% du volume initial."

"l. IntroductionA reliable sampling system is the basis for an on-stream analyzer. This was realized in Outokumpu company when the development work of the Courier 300 On-Stream X-ray analysis system was started. Because Outokumpu Oy is a mining and mineral processing company, its engineers have been able to thoroughly test sampler prototypes in actual operating situations. The sampler development has been going for several years in close co-operation between company's concentrators, the Institute of Physics and the Instrument Division of Outokumpu Oy. The most active part of the work was done between 1969- 1972. Besides the reliable operation of a sampler special attention was paid to the representatively of the samples taken by the samplers. 2. The Courier 300 Sampling SystemThe sampling system comprises up to fourteen sampling circuits in one Courier analysis system. Each circuit consists of the following components:1. Primary sampler 2. Secondary sampler 3. Cleaner screen 4. Feeding tank5. Sample cell6. Timer-controlled sampler7. Pumps, sumps and pipesSecondary samplers, cleaner screen and feeding tanks are included in the secondary sct1npling system. The sample cells are located in the spectrometer cabinet of the analyzer."

"The Yukon's numerous (185) placer gold mines are still a major social and economic force in this developing economy. Gold recovery at each of the various sluiceboxes is not optimized due to extremely difficult sampling logistics and a shortage of technical expertise and industrial research.At each of six operating placer mines, numerous sluicebox tailings samples were collected with hand held sample cutters and combined into large (2-7 cubic yards) duplicate samples. The entire sample volumes were screened and processed on a shaking table to determine gold losses.
