This paper outlines the regional geology and history of the area, and summarizes the stratigraphy, structure and geology of the Brunswick No. 12 mine area. The Brunswick No. 12 deposit is a stratiform massive sulphide body. It occurs in rocks of the Tetagouche Group, which is believed to range in age from Lower to Middle Ordovician. The stratigraphic sequence, including the stratiform orebody, in ascending order consists of older metasedimentary rocks, augen schist, metasediments, augen. schist, footwall metasediments, the -massive sulphide body, iron formation, hanging-wall metasediments, siliceous tuff, basic volcanic rocks , basic iron formation and a porphyry dyke. This sequence is similar to that at some other deposits in the area. Four phases of structural deformation are known to be present in the Brunswick No. 12 mine area. The first deformation folds (F1 ) and associated faulting are the most important factors in determining the distribution of the massive sulphides. This deformation has resulted in the massive sulphides being separated into four zones: the Main Zone, the West Zone, the East Zone and the V-2 Zone. This paper, describing mining and milling methods and costs at the Gold Hill mine, is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines. Boise Basin, in which the geld Hill mine is located, is in the central part of Boise County, Idaho, about 30 miles by air line northeast of Boise. The mine, owned and operated by Talache Mines, Inc., is at the southern end of the town of Quartzburg. About 115 to 125 tons daily is mind by square-setting and is treated in an amalgamation plant.

The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) is a rock (roof) mass classification (RMC) system/index that was originally developed by the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) for aspects of underground coalmine geotechnical design and was first introduced to Australia as a part of the original Analysis of Longwall Tailgate Serviceability (ALTS) project conducted in 1997/1998. In subsequent years further refinement to its calculation was undertaken, such that the CMRR is now an industry standard for quantifying the structural competence of the primary bolted roadway roof interval and has been routinely/widely used by Australian collieries over the last 25 years with great success for roof support/chain pillar design. There have been many publications discussing the use and calculation of RMC systems and this paper also provides an important update and recommendations in how best to calculate the CMRR. However, it is rare to find an explanation as to why and how a RMC system/index satisfactorily takes account of the mechanics and rock mass behavioural issues associated with ground reinforcement. This paper provides such an explanation and insight with respect to the CMRR so it is: 1) better understood, 2) to allay any concerns, and therefore 3) will continue to be confidently used by and for the collieries’ benefit.

This report covers the period from Jan. I, 1943 to Dec. 31, 1943. During the year, II2 wells were drilled in Mississippi, as foilows: wildcats drilled and abandoned, 54; wildcats producing oil, 4; oil wells drilled in oil fields, 26; oil wells drilled in fields, dry and abandoned, 10; sulphur-test wells drilled, 14; salt-water-disposal wells, 3; core tests, I. Prospecting Geophysical work in Mississippi during 1943 amounted to 1127 crew weeks, divided as follows: reflection seismograph, 809 weeks; gravity meter, 285; magnotometer, 30; torsion balance, 3. A considerable amount of core drilling was done over a large part of the state. The complete data on this activity are not available at the present time. Salt Domes To date, the following salt domes have been discovered in Mississippi: Midway, Edwards, Glass, Newman, Tatum, Oak-vale, Kings, Halifax, D'Lo, Hazlehurst, Byrd, Leedo, Prentiss, Carson, Moselle, Monticello, Ruth, Keno, Taylorsville. New Oil Fields Lincoln County.—On March 10, 1943, the California Company completed its Smith No. I in sec. 4, T. 7 N., R. 7 E., Lincoln County, as an oil well and produced 29 bbl. of 25" gravity oil in 24 hr. through a fi-in. choke. Two outpost wells have been drilled in this area by the California Company, and both have been abandoned as dry holes. Madison County. —Love Petroleum Co. completed its J. R. Anderson No. 2, sec. 2, T. 8 N., R. I W., Madison County, on Sept. 7, 1943. This well produced 135 bbl. of approximately 30" gravity- oil in 24 hr. through a )/4-in. choke. The production comes from a sand or porosity in the upper part of the Chalk formation of the Cretaceous age. Adams County.—The California Company drilled its National Gasoline Co. of Louisiana No. I in sec. 52, T. 7 N., R. I W., to a total depth of 10,383 ft., and at 10,280 ft, it perforated and obtained gas and a condensate. The well had several showings in the Wilcox of the Eocene age. Several of these showings were tested and the well finally was completed at 5888 ft. on Oct. 6, 1943, producing 44" gravity oil in the second sand in this formation. No other wells were completed in this field during the year. However, a number of wells are contemplated in the near future, and locations have been staked by the California Company. The Oklahoma Pipe Line Co. will market the oil through its pipe-line facilities. Wayne County.—The Gulf Refining Co. drilled Davis No. I in sec. 2, T. 9 N., R. 9 W. in Wayne County. After several stem tests 545'-in. casing was set at 6850 ft. and production was obtained in the so-called Massive Sand of the Lower Tuscaloosa. The well produced 359 bbl. of oil in 24 hr., and it Was completed on Oct. 4, 1943. Other locations have been staked ill this area and probably will be drilled in 1944 by

WITH all the advantages of handling bulk materials by means of belt conveyor also go some problems, one of the most persistent being that of cleaning. When sticky materials are being carried; the build-up of material on the return idler rolls results in difficulty of belt training. Much attention has been given to the problem of cleaning conveyor belts, and a great variety of cleaning devices have been developed. Even the best involve troublesome maintenance, and none can completely remove the fine particles imbedded in the belt cover, which cause rapid wear of the return idler rolls, and at the same time, of the belt cover as well. One of the major rubber companies has been promoting a two-way belt system, in which the conveyor belt is given two successive 90" twists at each end to enable it to carry material in both directions simultaneously. For many years the flat belt transmission industry has installed quarter-turn and half-turn twists in countless numbers of instances. While quarter-turn and half-turn twists in transmission belts is a familiar application, the 180" twist apparently has never been previously attempted with a conveyor belt. About a year ago, two officials of the National Iron Co. of Duluth, Lester and Lewis Erickson, proposed twisting the return run of a conveyor belt on an installation that they were designing for one of the major iron ore producers. Since then the soundness of the idea has been demonstrated, both in theory and by practical test, with the result that the installation of two conveyor belts involving the twisting of the return run is now under way. These two installations are designed to have the return run of the conveyor belt twisted 180" as it leaves the snub pulley at the head drive. The clean underside of the belt is thus placed against the idlers on the return run as well as on the carrying run. Just before it enters the tail pulley, the belt will be twisted an additional 180°, restoring it to its normal position. Because this twisting of the return run of a conveyor belt is a radical departure from accepted practice, an elaborate and extensive test was conducted early in 1950 to demonstrate that this twisting of the return run could be done successfully, also to establish application data for accomplishing this twisting, and to determine if any special equipment would be required. In studying this concept of twisting the return run of a conveyor belt, a number of problems need to be solved, primarily the ones brought about by deliberately introducing an unequal distribution of stress across the conveyor belt and controlling that maldistribution of stress, while confining it to the return run portion. The tension conditions existing in the return run of a conveyor belt are clear to all designers. First, the return run carries the initial or slack side tension of the conveyor belt, the tension that must be supplied to the return run to provide proper frictional contact between the belt and the driving pulley so that the necessary power can be transmitted from the driving pulley to the belt without slippage. This slack side tension is supplied to the belt by means of takeups, either of the gravity type, which can be vertical or horizontal, or by means of the screw type. With inclined or declined belt conveyors the slope tension also must be considered, which is the tension imposed by the weight of the belt hanging from the top pulley. This slope tension frequently can furnish part or even all of the initial tension required. The maximum value of the slope tension will be at the top pulley, and it decreases in direct proportion to the length. In addition to the foregoing, it frequently is desirable to impose arbitrarily additional slack side tension to provide sufficient tension at the loading point at the tail, so that the belt will adequately support its load between the carrying idlers. Design Conditions for Twisting A number of design conditions exist, which must be satisfied successfully to accomplish the twisting of the return run without exceeding normal working limits in any portion of the conveyor belt. It is obvious that the belt edge, in its relation to the center of the belt, must stretch in making a twist, because as the twist is accomplished, the belt edge travels through a longer path than does the center of the belt. It is further obvious that if the edge of the belt is stretched, a redistribution of stress in the belt is required to allow this edge stretching. Moreover, this stress will be unequal across the width of the belt, having a maximum value at the edges, with a minimum value at the- center of the belt. With correct initial tension in the return run of a conveyor belt, the existing slack side tension will be unequally distributed when a twist is introduced. This report describes the design and implementation of UHF radio and closed-circuit television systems in the Black River room and pillar limestone mine near Butler, Pendleton County, Kentucky. Prior to designing the radio system, measurements of signal attenuation on 812 and 466 mHz were made in the slope tunnel and in the straight and level crosscuts in the mine. Two distributed antenna systems fed by two sets of base stations provide approximately 75% coverage of the mine. Passive reflectors are used for extending signals into intersecting crosscuts and two-way signal boosters will be used to extend signals to the perimeter and obstructed areas of the mine. Fourteen mine vehicles were equipped with mobile radios equipped with digital identification, alarm and status encoders. Fifteen portable transceivers also were used. Six closed-circuit television cameras provide surveillance of critical transfer points of the belt conveyor system, and the loading dock at the base of the slope and an ash disposal area in the mine. Two-way radio communication and closed-circuit television have saved considerable man. hours, increased production, reduced maintenance costs and enhanced safety. Innovative developments were the use of passive reflectors and two-way signal boosters for extending signals into intersecting crosscuts, development of lightweight signal margin measuring equipment, modifications of mobile digital encoders to automatically send status information from mine vehicles such as numbers of loads of ore delivered, hot engine, etc., and the use of CATV technology for multiplexing audio, digital and video signals onto coaxial cables from the surface to the mine.

A preliminary survey was performed to investigate the impregnation of relatively weak, porous volcanic tuff and a relatively strong, dense sandstone with five different monomers. Increases in compressive strengths by factors of 2 to 5, and elastic moduli by factors of 2 to 3.5, are reported for natural rocks (tuff., sandstone, dacite), which were impregnated with five monomers (methyl methacrylate; chlorostyrene; 40 percent TMPTMA-60 percent styrene; 40 percent TMPTMA-60 percent chlorostyrene; 60 percent polyester-40 percent styrene); polymerization took place after monomers were forced into the rock. Impregnation was performed (1) by pressurizing rock specimens from one end, or (2) by a vacuum-soak operation. Polymerization was accomplished by either radiation or chemical initiation techniques. Strength improvement is dependent on (1) the type of monomer used, (2) the amount of polymer incorporated into the rock, and (3) the degree of water saturation of the rock. Water saturation strongly reduced the effectiveness of the method for the polymer systems tested. The more viscous monomers (for example, 60 percent polyester-40 percent styrene) were more effective in displacing the water from the rock, and compressive strengths of wet rock were doubled with these systems. Water saturations ranging from 25 to 100 percent of maximum saturation gave essentially identical results. Further tests on other types of mine rock; including shale and coal, are planned. Water-compatible polymer systems should be developed, or present systems should be suitably modified. For application to tunnel stabilization, design studies evaluating the improvement in rock strength and its influence on the support system are also recommended.

ABSTRACT The influence of using different extraction processes (caustic versus non-caustic) on thethixotropic strength of oil sands fine tailings is examined, as is the influence of adding a coagulant tocaustic fine tailings. The thixotropic strength of fine tailings at large void ratios manifests itself as a bonding or gel strength that has been widely noted both in the laboratory and in the field. This gel strength has a significant influence on preventing the initial consolidation or settlement of fine tailings. Differences between the fine tailings’ thixotropic strength development are explained based on their physical and chemical characteristics.

Greek laterites, which generally had nickel concentrations of < 1 %, are amenable to chemical leaching,. although there is considerable variability in the ease of leaching with different ore types. With low grade ores(< 1 % Ni content); >70% of the nickel was leached in columns with a strong selectivity for nickel over iron. Heterotrophic microbially assisted leaching could be a viable alternative to classical hydrometallurgical and/or pyrometallurgical techniques, with a very high recovery (greater than 80% ) being found with some of these mineral microbial interactions. Critic acid was probably the effective chelating agent.

Research in the field of mining safety and health in the United States plays an important part in protecting the lives of miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program conducts surveillance, studies and developmental work aimed at improving the safety and health of miners. With recent reviews of the Mining Program by the National Academy of Sciences and the Mining Program response (NIOSH, 2008), the importance of setting goals, conducting high quality engineering and scientific research and evaluating the outputs, outcomes, relevance and impacts of these projects has been reemphasized. Surveillance of reported injuries is a first step in deciding on research directions and in designing specific projects. Groups of injuries often share features and attributes that suggest common causes and may respond to similar preventive efforts. Identifying groups of injuries also serves to prioritize intervention efforts. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Accident and Injury database (MSHA, 2008) provides individual case reports of mining injuries, illnesses and certain no-injury accidents (events such as roof falls that stop mine production or miners’ activities for more than one hour). This database is an indispensable resource for researchers and stakeholders needing information on the statistics of these events. From an epidemiological perspective, research projects target groups of miners at risk due to specific patterns of work, equipment, mine settings and the management of safety and health in their mines. Incidence rates are provided by the MSHA data for selected variables, such as surface/underground location, standard industrial classification and state. While incidence rates are the preferred measure for all variables, denominators are not typically available; for example, to more clearly understand the data about injury by occupational type, it would be necessary to conduct demographic surveys. A current survey of the demographics of the mining industry should be complete by 2010, which will allow incidence rates to be developed for a number of variables such as age, occupation and experience. This survey will provide the first update of its kind since the first survey was conducted in 1985. This report describes an alternative method of analyzing and presenting MSHA data for the purpose of identifying high-cost, high-severity injuries and illnesses. Researchers at the NIOSH Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) developed programs to find the top five most frequent accident classes, natures of injury, types of accidents and other selected variables from the MSHA database. Studying these variables gives a cross-sectional snapshot of the most frequent groups of injuries within a commodity, regional group or time period, and allows researchers to quickly understand developing patterns for new research projects. Waste dumps are widely used to discharge stripped mine wastes in open pit mining methods. As mining progresses, the height of the waste dumps will increase gradually, which may induce sliding failure once the height exceeds a critical value. Therefore, estimation of the maximum dumping height is crucial to the life-cycle use of a waste dump. However, published information about the maximum height of mine waste dumps are extremely rare. In this study, the maximum dumping height is estimated based on the strength-reduction technique by numerical simulations. The influences of dump geometry and properties on the maximum height are investigated. The results show that the maximum dump height decreases as the dump slope inclination angle α or the unit weight of dump materials γ increases, but decreases when the shear parameters of dump materials (cohesion c and internal friction angle ϕ) increase. The maximum height starts to increase with the ground inclination β when shear failure occurs at the interface between the dump and the base. Furthermore the effects of the dump width B, Young’s modulus E, and Poisson’s ratio μ of dump materials on the maximum height are almost insignificant. Good agreement was found between numerical results available in the literature and those obtained in this study.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) IT does not seem to be generally known that some American pig-irons contain notable amounts of vanadium, and while the present investigation is far from covering the whole range of irons, it is hoped that, at least, it may serve to call attention to the importance of looking for this element. The majority of the pig-irons investigated were made in the Lehigh Valley and neighboring furnaces, using more or less New Jersey magnetite in their mixtures. Many of these ores, and probably all of them, contain a little vanadium as well as titanium; the ore from one of the largest of these mines contains 0.05 per cent. of vanadium and 0.60 per cent. of titanium. Dr. Thomas M. Drown was the first to detect the presence. of vanadium in the incrustations 1 occurring on certain pig-irons, and he also found this element in a number of magnetites, but the methods for its accurate determination had not, at that time, been well worked out. In a general way, it may be said that the Lehigh Valley pig-irons contain from 0.02 to 0.05 per cent. of vanadium and from 0.10 to 0.20 per cent. of titanium. These elements follow the silicon; that is, the furnace-conditions which produce a high-silicon, low-sulphur iron will cause the maximum reduction of vanadium and titanium, and the lower grades of iron, with low silicon and high sulphur, have a lower content of these elements. As the 2018 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., I am pleased to present the 2018 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., Vol. 344. A significant portion of the contribution that we make as a professional society is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). Those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2018 Transactions consists of a total of 59 technical papers, encompassing all 25 papers published in 2018 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering (Vol. 70) and all 26 papers published in 2018 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 35). Additionally, this volume contains 8 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All of the technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our Publications staff. As the 2018 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume. The new year brings an exciting change. The publication of Transactions will cease with this volume. Instead, our Minerals & Metallurgical Processing journal has the new name of Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (MME), and Transactions as well as the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering are incorporated into MME. The journal is published in partnership with Springer Nature, and all SME members have free electronic access to the journal.

The traditional Ti6Al4V alloys were obtained by the smelting reduction of V-Ti bearing beach placer by rotary hearth furnace and aluminothermic reaction in laboratory. First, it gets he lp from combined rotary hearth furnace and grinding magnetic separation process to prepare titanium slag containing vanadium. In this study, a neural network model was used. The comparisons between experiment results and neural network simulation results show that genetic algorithm (GA)-based on back propagation (BP) method can predict the degree of reduction and separation of iron and slag with higher prediction accuracy. Then by aluminothermic reaction process, the optimized process parameters for Ti-V-Al alloys were searched. Al can deoxidize metal V and Ti from the metal oxides of artificial rutile containing vanadium. Finally, traditional Ti6Al4V alloy can be obtained by remelt and adjust the constituents.

Teck Cominco Metals Ltd. operates an integrated zinc-lead smelter at Trail, British Columbia, Canada. The zinc circuit comprises three parallel operations: conventional fluid-bed roasting, direct zinc pressure leaching of concentrates and atmospheric leaching of zinc oxide fume recycled from the lead smelter. The products from these three areas are combined in the main leaching plant where they undergo iron purification. Unlike most leaching circuits, the leach process in Trail begins with an acid leach and is followed by a neutral leach. An evaluation was undertaken to determine if the process at Trail could be improved by converting to the conventional neutral leaching process with a subsequent acid leach of the residues. This paper explores the results of these tests and the implications for Trail Operations.

There are many scales of innovation in the pursuit of concentrator performance improvement, including paradigm change, inventive change and incremental change. All are important, but the last is low risk, low cost and has a relatively high probability of success, given the right metallurgical skills. Seeking continuous improvement is also essential to ensure that performance does not decline over time due to ore type changes, personnel changes, equipment wear and other factors. When properly implemented, these small gains offer a very high rate of return for the project cost because they are made from marginal, not total, operating costs of the plant. To be effective this approach requires plant trials that use designed structure and appropriate statistics to test the observed differences arising from the old and new process treatments, be they a change in flotation reagent, in grind, pulp density, etc. However the pursuit of small but financially significant performance gains is often regarded as fruitless because of the range of variance in plant data, and the consequent difficulty of ‘proving’ that a benefit has been achieved. Opportunity for improvement is thus sometimes relegated to the realm of the impossible, or at best, treated with skepticism. Operations managers prefer to look for the larger gains, which are easier to demonstrate and prove. Unfortunately, these are seldom to be found; rather, a large gain can be more easily made by executing a series of small recovery improvements that are together equivalent to the ephemeral single large gain. In this paper we advocate a policy of continuing improvement driven by rigorous performance testing protocols and a formal ‘risk analysis’ approach to judging the efficacy of changes implemented in the plant. Following these simple procedures allows rational decisions to be made on the basis of quantifying risk and reward. In particular we consider the choice of hurdle rate for decision-making which best balances risk and reward. It is shown through case studies from actual industrial practice that this approach is practical and delivers significant financial value to the operation.

The Hamersley Basin of Western Australia holds significant tonnages of detrital iron deposits. Formed by a cyclic weathering and eroding sequence of nominally barren banded iron formation, they may form rich proximal accumulations of iron cemented gravels distal from any obvious hard-rock iron mineralisation. While generally small, they nonetheless represent excellent economic targets as they are near surface and easy to mine. The relatively high density of iron detritals, when compared with their sedimentary hosts, makes the gravity method the primary method of exploring for these blind deposits. Identification of possible trap sites is used as a precursor to gravity surveying, with magnetics used as an ancillary method prior to drilling. Application of the gravity method in this terrain is not straightforward. Detrital trap sites are best developed next to the spectacular cliffs that form the range fronts to the Hamersley Ranges. Precise terrain corrections and use of first vertical derivatives are routinely applied to gravity data in an effort to map every possible gravity high that may reflect the presence of a detrital accumulation. Extensions to Hamersley Iron Pty LimitedÆs BS2D deposit were discovered by the routine application of gravity. This methodology has been used to create a model by which exploration for detrital deposits continue to the present day.

Following the successful completion of a marked ball test defining the potential wear benefits the high chrome alloys may offer against forged steel, as well as laboratory test work investigating changes in pulp chemistry and improvements to metallurgical performance, a plant trial was commissioned at NewcrestÆs Ridgeway concentrator. The paper briefly describes these results.Newcrest decided to convert their media charge by the top-up method. To monitor the trial a sampling protocol was put in place whereby the pulp chemistry was monitored before, during and after the purge. The metallurgical shift data was analysed using various statistical methods to determine if the metallurgical performance had improved with the change in grinding media. While the analysis indicated that the metallurgy had improved, not all of the benefits could be assigned to the change in grinding media alone. However, the combination of reduction in media wear and the increases in copper and gold recoveries suggested that it was economically viable to operate with high chrome grinding media.As with many trials of this nature the prevailing economic conditions are fluid and a decision was made to revert back to forged steel grinding media in an effort to reduce operating costs. It was further agreed that Magotteaux could monitor the pulp chemistry and metallurgical changes in this reverse trial to confirm the results observed in the earlier conversion to high chrome grinding media.CITATION:Greet, C J, Hitchen, C and Kinal, J, 2012.
