Coal plays an important role in the energy needs of the World. Given its wide abundance and low cost, coal use is bound to increase with the growing energy demand. Despite its importance, there are growing concerns over coal?s environmental burdens, especially its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. To ensure sustainable extraction and use of coal, opportunities for minimizing potential impacts from coal have to be identified and exploited. Whilst extensive work has been done on life cycle assessment of coal use, especially in electricity generation which uses the bulk of coal produced, there has been limited work focusing specifically on coal mining. This study aims to estimate the cradle-to-gate life cycle climate change impacts of coal from a surface coal mine in the United States. The study employs general principles of ISO standards for LCA.

The increased thickness of the coal seam leads to higher goaf roof collapse height. In contrast, the dynamic pressure from the mining of ultra-thick coal seams generates higher abutment pressures around the mined area and may affect the stability of roadways servicing these panels. To mitigate the deformation and damage issues in the roadways during the extraction of ultra-thick coal seams under a high depth of cover, researchers have proposed combining high prestress constant resistance support and roof-cutting technology (HPCR-RC). The deformation and failure mechanisms of the roadways during the extraction of ultra-thick coal seams under a high depth of cover, along with the mechanisms and field control effects of the combined support system, have been analyzed through theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and field experiments. The research findings reveal that the high in situ stress, initial excavation disturbance, rotation, and subsidence of the fractured roof of the extra-thick coal seam led to significant deformation and damage in the roadways. High prestress constant resistance support compensates for the initial stress loss, reduces initial stress concentration, and absorbs deformation energy. Moreover, the roof-cutting technology severs the connection between the goaf roof and the roadway roof, disrupts the path of stress transfer, raises the level of roof backfilling in the goaf, and provides support to the roof, effectively alleviating the pressure on the coal pillar ahead and adjacent to the working face. Field experiments have confirmed the effectiveness of HPCR-RC, as indicated by a substantial decrease in surrounding rock deformation and support pressure within the roadways.

In upwards medium-deep hole cut blasting, many confinement effects exist due to the small number of free surfaces, which is mainly provided by an empty hole. If the cut blasting effect cannot meet expectations, then subsequent blasting construction will be seriously affected, and large security risks to operators in the stope can be induced. The number of free surfaces is directly related to the layout of the cutting borehole. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the layout of the first round of cutting boreholes. Theoretical analysis, numerical simulations, and field tests were used to study the formation process of cut blasting and optimize the layout of the first round of cutting boreholes. Based on the blasting parameters in the field, LSDYNA software was used to establish cut blasting models with four kinds of borehole layouts in the first round. The RHT constitutive model was used to simulate the rock-breaking effect. The numerical results show that the cut blasting effect is optimal when Nos. 3, 5, 7, and 9 are charge holes and Nos. 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 are empty holes. In addition, the greater the number of empty holes, the larger the release space and the better the cut blasting effect. The uniformity of the empty hole distribution, namely, the uniformity of the release space, also affects the cut blasting effect. The field results indicate that a good cut blasting effect can be achieved by optimizing the borehole layout.

On Oct. 1-3, SME?s Twin Cities chapter (SME TC), in cooperation with the University of Minnesota ? Duluth?s Precambrian Research Center (UMD-PRC), cohosted a symposium on silica sand mining and processing. The conference was held at the Earle Brown Heritage Center near Minneapolis. The symposium was followed by a day-long field trip to operating mines, processing plants and loading facilities located in southwestern Wisconsin. Speakers and attendees at the symposium included university professors, industry experts, regulators, mining company representatives, equipment suppliers, consulting engineers and service companies. Approximately 320 people attended the conference. In addition, about 50 people who oppose mine development and the oil and gas industry showed up to voice their displeasure with the event and those companies that operate in this space.

A nearly 305-m- (1,000-ft-) wide sandstone channel was projected to run through the mid panel area of a 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel in a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine. This sandstone channel was known to cause serious longwallface roof control problems in the mine?s B-panel area in 1998 and 1999; and most recently, it induced many large face cavities and caused a substantial production delay in the preceding panel. For the two B panels mined in 1998 and 1999, hydraulic fracturing of the massive sandstone was conducted to facilitate better caving, thus relieving cantilever compressive stress at the longwall face. Vastly improved longwall face condition was observed and four weeks of mining delay due to bad roof conditions were eliminated. The implementation of the hydraulic fracturing technique, results of underground observation and measurement, and results of numerical modeling were summarized in a paper presented in the 20th International Conference on Ground Control (Su et al., 2001). This article is a summary of the activities that took place during a four-month period (October 2011 through February 2012) at a Consol Energy longwall mine southwestern Pennsylvania to improve face conditions and safety of underground personnel during mining of the 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel. The elevated concern for safety was driven by adverse face conditions encountered while mining the preceding longwall panel. Many of the problems were attributed to a thick and massive sandstone channel. A joint task force consisting of coal operations engineering, Pennsylvania operations engineering and CNX Gas personnel was formed in August 2011, which recommended drilling four hydraulic fracturing holes along the center axis of the sandstone channel to reduce pressure and improve face conditions at the longwall face. The mining regulations of all 50 States were reviewed by the Bureau of Mines, and those parts pertaining to the use of internal combustion (IC) engines (particularly diesel engines) in underground mines or confined spaces were extracted. Also extracted were subjects associated with the use of IC engines; for example, storage and handling of flammable liquids, maintenance, and ventilation requirements. As the laws now stand, 29 States have specific regulations that affect the operation of diesel engines in underground coal and/or metal and nonmetal mines. The other States have no regulations because either they have no mining activities or they defer to Federal regulations. Six states have regulations expressly prohibiting the use of diesels in underground coal mines. Specific contacts (addresses and phone numbers) precede each State's regulations to facilitate inquiries about regulation revisions and interpretation.

Two-phase Pb-Sn alloys, ranging in compositiotz from 12 to 26 at. pct Pb, were unidirectionally solidified in a convection-fvee system, with thermal gradients in the liquid of up to 480°C per cm. Plane front solidification Loas achieved in all alloys at sufficiently steep gradient and slow growth rate. Conditions causing breakdown of the interface to a cellular or dendritic structure were roughly as predicted by a sinlple constitutional supercooling criterion. Structures of alloys of near-eutectic composition, solidified with plane front, exhibited a lamellar structure; the alloys furthest from the eutectic exhibited a rod-like morphology. Assumptions used in a previous paper for calculations of solute redistribution in two-phase plane front growth are shown to be reasonable for Pb-Sn alloys. Results of calculations are in good agveement with experiment. These show that variations in growth rate during solidification of the composite produce marked changes in average composition of the solid. IN a previous paper, Part I,' conditions necessary for plane front solidification of two-phase alloys were discussed and calculations given on solute redistribution in this type of solidification. This paper, Part 11, describes experiments on Pb-Sn alloys, designed to check the assumptions of the analyses presented, and to demonstrate their applicability to a given alloy system (Pb-Sn). APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE General. A vertical crystal growing unit was built for the study as described below, and "normal solidification" employed throughout (i.e., the ingot was completely melted except for a portion near the bottom end and then solidification initiated). The furnace was designed to permit achieving very low interface velocities, and steep gradients, in essential absence of convection; it is sketched in Figs. 1 and 2. Simple heat flow considerations indicated choice of a small-diameter specimen (ingot) to achieve high thermal gradients; ingot size chosen was 0.3 cm in diam. The ingots were held inside silica tubes 0.06 cm wall thickness. The requirement for an essentially convection-free system was met by use of the vertical furnace with the heat source over the heat sink, as well as by use of the small diameter ingots. In addition, by selection of tin-rich Pb-Sn alloys, the diffusion boundary layer (lead-rich) was denser than the bulk liquid and would not cause convection. The only apparent driving force for convection in this system was the small transverse temperature gradient resulting from heat flow into the samples from the furnace. Such convection must have been small, however, since 1) no temperature fluctuations in the melt were noted in the recordings, which would have indicated turbulent convection, and 2) experimental results obtained and described below could not have been achieved in presence of significant convection. Ingot Preparation. Pb-Sn alloys ranging from 12 to 26 at. pct Pb were prepared from high-purity lead and tin (99.9999 pct pure metal). Each alloy was prepared by first melting the pure metals in the proper ratio in air, in a Pyrex container. The melt was then stirred thoroughly with a graphite rod and cast into a preheated graphite mold. Ingots were then prepared from these castings for use in the actual experiments; each ingot consisted of a rod of alloy, 15 cm long in a 25-cm-long transparent fused-silica tube, 0.3 cm ID and 0.06 cm wall thickness. One chromel-alumel thermocouple, made with 0.004-in.-diam wire and protected by a two-hole alumina tube, was inserted into each ingot. The 1.5 cm of the thermocouple nearest the bead were protruding from the alumina tube and were coated with a very thin layer of boron nitride paste which provided electrical insulation while allowing good heat conduction. The electrically welded junction size was about that of each wire and the cross section of the two wires represented about 0.3 pct of the sample cross section. "Construction activities in major projects that involve deep excavations necessitate the use of vertical walls surrounding the construction site to play an important role as earth retention system. The walls are usually partially penetrating impervious walls which can increase the efficiency of the ground water control system that usually consists of number of partially penetrating wells. The analysis and design of such system requires 3D numerical simulation. The aim of this study is to develop simplified semi-empirical approach to analyze and design such system. The analyzed model is a single well in a square site that is surrounded by impervious walls along the perimeter of the site in an unconfined aquifer. The results of the parametric analysis are presented in this paper aiming to assess and understand the factors that influence dewatering in terms of ground water or drawdown profile surrounding the well. The parametric analysis is carried out using the 3D finite difference software. The parametric analysis comprises with more than 550 cases calculated. The study involved the parameters; well penetration depth, impervious wall penetration depth, size of the construction pit, coefficient of permeability, well yield and well location or distance between well center to impervious wall edge.IntroductionThe presence of groundwater in a site may have impact on the construction processes involved during the course of project construction, especially those projects that involve deep excavations. Deep excavations, especially in urban areas, require the construction of supported walls all around the site perimeter to ensure the stability of the excavation. In most of cases, the constructed walls are relatively impervious. Depending on the ground and site conditions, the walls are not penetrating all the way down through to the bottom of the aquifer and thus the walls are partially penetrating walls. The presence of ground water necessitates the lowering of the groundwater to levels below the bottom of the excavation to ensure working in dry. This paper focuses on groundwater control systems that consist of deep wells inside square areas enclosed by impervious walls partially penetrating unconfined aquifers. The wells are partially penetrating the aquifer, as well. There are many factors or parameters that are related to the configurations of the components of the system that may influence the drawdown of a well in such groundwater control system. This paper is a part of a comprehensive study that aims to development of a simple method for estimating the drawdown of dewatering system of the described configuration. In order to achieve such a major goal, a 3D finite difference model is developed for the problem in hand. A comprehensive parametric analysis was then carried out to investigate the influence of all the parameters on the drawdown of a deep well in such groundwater control system. This paper describes the problem, the model, the parametric analysis including the involved parameters. The paper, then, demonstrate the results of the analysis showing the influence of the studied parameters on the drawdown of a single well."

K+S Potash Canada GP (KSPC) is part of the K+S Group, one of the world's leading suppliers of standard and speciality fertilizers and the world?s leading salt producer. Globally, the K+S Group employs more than 14,000 people. The K+S share ? the only commodities stock on the German DAX index ? is listed on all German stock exchanges. Legacy, K+S Group?s most recent project, is a greenfield solution potash mine and production plant in the south of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Therefore K+S will invest 4.1 billion CAD. With the expected commissioning in summer 2016 the company projects to reach the two-million-tonnesmark of production capacity at the new location at the end of 2017. The gradual extension of the annual capacity to 2.86 million tonnes of potash products will occur afterwards. The Legacy Project will be Saskatchewan?s first new potash mine in nearly 40 years. It is one of the world?s most economically attractive potash projects. The project will contribute to Saskatchewan?s growth through employment, tax revenues, utilities, and local partnerships. Located in the southern part of Saskatchewan?s potash belt, the deposit is too deep to be mined conventionally due to rock mechanics and high temperatures. Legacy will therefore be a solution mine. Proximity to the urban centers of Regina and Moose Jaw is imperative, with their workforces and economy, as well as access to highways, railway carriers and, most importantly in the prairies, water. With this unique project setting and mining technique, we are convinced that Legacy will be one of the most efficient, economic, sustainable and safe potash facilities in the world.

This report is the first of a series concerned with processes for producing magnesium. These reports will evaluate metallothermic, carbothermic , and electrolytic production methods, and will furnish a cost basis for comparing the processes. Areas deemed most promising for future research will be delineated for each procedure. This report presents briefly the history of the metallothermic process, and describes the operations of the Defense Plant Corp. (DPC) plants that employed the process. A hypothetical plant designed to produce 12,000 tons of magnesium per year, using ferrosilicon as a reductant, is described, and raw materials, energy, and major equipment requirements are estimated. Several process modifications are suggested for future research.

The planning, construction, and monitoring of underground storage facilities is a key factor in meeting upcoming challenges as part of the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables. Therefore, the many years of knowledge and expertise in ground control gained from coal mining are highly valuable for new mining and storage operations. For such applications, our previous work examined cavity registration, combining structure from motion and LiDAR through a case study in a former lead ore mine. Building on this, the results of this recent case study are discussed regarding the possible application in sites for nuclear waste disposal in Germany including a view on the situation in the United States. Photogrammetric methods are particularly suitable as part of long-term monitoring, which relies on both precise survey results and a large variety of detailed visualization. In order to gain a better understanding of the resulting application potential for holistic monitoring, both existing repositories sites in Germany and ones yet to be found are examined. This search and selection process for high-level nuclear waste disposal is studied in detail together with rules resulting from the (German) mining law, regulations, and other guidelines. Hereby, key requirements of photogrammetric products like oriented images, point clouds, and three-dimensional (3- D) models are identified for different case studies. The findings on accuracy and integrity of the generated models are not only of interest for future repository sites or underground pumped storage power plants, but also offers various possibilities for underground mining of coal and other commodities.

Rock breakage is a major component of all mining and mineral processing operations with the particle size distribution linked to productivity through the comminution chain. Optimisation and automatic control of comminution, material handling, and agglomeration processes is a complex task with large potential for gains in productivity, and energy efficiency. A key factor in realising these gains is the requirement for fully-automated online particle size distribution measurement to provide the necessary feedback and input for control. Moreover, to enable automatic control system it is necessary to provide a consistent, reliable size distribution measurement that avoids the significant errors resulting from under-sizing overlapped particles and over-sizing clusters of fine particles. Published literature and observation of commercial systems indicate a body of predominantly 2D photographic based particle size measurement systems that suffer from a number of significant errors except in the simplest case of a monolayer of particles under good illumination with limited colour variation in the material. In order to overcome these limitations a university and industry collaboration developed three-dimensional particle measurement (3DPM) between 2006 and 2012, based on 3D surface profile measurement of the visible material on conveyor. 3DPM avoids particle delineation errors due to variation in material colour and shadows, detects overlapping versus non-overlapping particles, and identifies areas of fine particles as fines and not large rocks. 3DPM measures: the visible material and calculates its particle size distribution, bulk volume, detects boulders, and conveyor belt fill factor in an automated consistent manner. Furthermore, 3DPM’s advanced algorithms allow observation of particle variation that would otherwise be undetected without the capacity to identify visible areas-of-fines and overlapped particles. Boliden Mines has installed 3DPM at three operations for measurement between the stockpile silo and grinding mill, and measurement after the primary crusher. Fragmentation measurements across multiple years of measurement are presented with some observations of plant behaviour. In the future 3DPM results will be incorporated into automatic control strategies for plant optimisation. 3DPM is used across a wide range of material types and applications that also includes; limestone aggregate for quality control in manufacturing, agglomerates for closed-loop automatic control in chemical production, and measurement of coke for size-based blending feed control to the blast furnace in steel production. This report describes the performance of 17 selected water-injection projects producing from Pennsylvanian-and Permian-age reservoirs. Illustrations depict reservoir structure and thickness, and production and injection history. A selected bibliography of publications pertaining to area oil recovery and geology is included. Tabulations of field and reservoir data reveal marked differences in the projects. Increased oil recovery resulted from injecting water in most cases; however, seven projects recovered less oil than the operators anticipated. Oil recovery by water injection ranged from 0.2 to 262 bbl per acre ft, or 0.1 to 22.5 pct of the initial stock-tank oil in place. Major reasons suggested for poor performance include: (1) Adverse directional horizontal permeability, (2) channeling of injected water through fractures or zones of high permeability, and (3) lack of containment of injected water. One 330-foot-deep project is among the first successful shallow water-floods in north Texas. Another project is the first successful Canyon sand-stone waterflood reported in the area. Previous gas injection in two Cisco sandstone projects did not prevent the reservoirs from responding favorably to waterflooding.

Two commercially available through-the-Earth (TTE) communications systems were evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. One system utilises magnetic field (H-field) antennae while the other system utilises electric field (E-field) antennae to achieve communication. A large portion of this mine is overlain by an inactive gas-oil field composed of densely spaced wells. This feature provided a unique opportunity to determine the impact of cased wells on both TTE technologies. The following communication modes were investigated: surface to underground, underground to surface, underground to underground and real-time two-way communications. Standard deployments of the TTE systems using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations under certain circumstances. As a result, the design and deployment that will optimise TTE transmissions are unique to each system and to the specific area of the mine. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. THE Pinchi Lake mercury belt is in central British Columbia, about fifty miles north of the Prince Rupert branch of the Canadian National railway (Figure 1). Until 1936 little was known about the geology of this area. Jn 19~6 and 1937, J. G. Gray and the writer mapped the Fort Fraser area (G.S.C. maps 630A and 631A) for the Geological Survey of Canada. During the field season of 1937, cinnabar was discovered by J. G. Gray in the Permian limestones on the north shore of Pinchi lake on what have since proved to be the main showings of the Pinchi Lake mercury mine. Claims were staked in the spring of 1938 and later that year were optioned to the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company. Development work revealed cinnabar deposits of commercial size and grade, and a small reduction plant was erected, production of mercury commencing in June, 1940. Since 1940, this plant has been enlarged by additional units. The ore treated is reported to contain between 0.5 and 0.75 per cent mercury. The production of mercury from this deposit is now far in excess of Canadian requirements and this country is able to supply the United Kingdom with part of its needs. In 1940 and 1941, several other occurrences of cinnabar were found northwest of Pinchi lake. During 1941, the writer made a geological investigation of the known cinnabar occurrences and of the belt of country in which they are located. The present paper summarizes the results of this work. The writer is indebted to officials of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, and to Mr. E. Bronlund of the Pinchi Lake mine in particular, for their generous co-operation in the work.

"Inhalation of certain forms of silica, asbestos and some other respirable dusts can result in pulmonary fibrosis, characterized by destruction of the surfaces of alveoli and respiratory bronchioles. Fibrous thickening of the alveolar septa decreases the lung's capacity for gas exchange.Pulmonary macrophage damage by respired dust may initiate the fibrotic response.In one proposed mechanism, dust particles interact with the plasma membrane of a macrophage. This damages the cell or induces some hyperactivity of the cell, resulting in excessive release of lysosomal enzymes and reactive forms of oxygen (1). These reactive enzymes or radicals then damage the alveolar surface epithelial cells. A second mechanism has also been pro¬posed (2,3) in which dust damage to the macrophage causes the release of mediator substances which induce pulmonary fibroblast cell proliferation and increased collagen synthesis. This produces fibrous tissue in the terminal air spaces (4,5).Mineral surface interactions with plasma membrane lipoproteins have been proposed as a mechanism of lytic damage of pulmonary cells by silica dust in numerous models (6,7). The significance of dust surface proper¬ties has been further revealed in studies showing significant changes in dust induced cytotoxicity as a function of dust surface crystallinity and organic or inorganic contamination or coating of mineral surfaces (8,9). Such modification of the mineral surface might interfere with surface sites responsible for the toxicity of dusts for pulmonary macrophages, thus interrupting the early stages of the process of fibrosis.In vitro cellular assay systems using erythrocyte hemolysis or the release of macrophage cytosolic or lysosomal enzymes following dust challenge, have been used to analyze the initial mechanism of dust damage to cells. However the ability of these assays to predict the pulmonary disease producing potential of various dusts is imperfect owing to some ""false positive"" results. These assays as performed are therefore questionable models for the initial lesion in pneumoconiosis or silicosis. In particular, kaolin frequently is found to have comparable biological activity to silica quartz in these assays (10,11).Silica and kaolin have distinctly different fibrogenic potentials. Silica is highly fibrogenic, resulting in both acute and chronic silicosis (12). Some epidemiological data and animal experimentation data have indicated that long term exposure to kaolin can result in pneumoconiosis; however, kaolin is relatively benign as compared to silica (13-18). Kaolin is also of interest because it is one of the major mineral inclusions in Eastern U.S. bituminous coals. We have observed that exposing respirable sized native silica or kaolin for two hours to pulmonary macrophages results in a greater enzyme release for kaolin exposures, on a dust mass basis. Exposure of erythrocytes to the dusts also results in greater levels of hemolysis by kaolin for equal mass respirable dust doses. Therefore, these results do not correlate positively with known disease inducing potentials of the two dusts.Characterization of physical and chemical surface properties of dusts involved in occupational exposures, and characterization of the alteration of those surface properties which are likely to occur upon deposition of the dust in the lung, should improve the identification of respiratory disease hazards.Inhaled dust particles deposited in the lower respiratory tract will come in contact with pulmonary surfactant. This surfactant forms a surface film on and emulsion in the liquid hypophase coating of the alveoli and respiratory bronchioles. The primary constituent of this pulmonary surfactant is the lipid diacyl glycerophosphorylcholine, lecithin (19). "INTRODUCTIONNSCC International Ltd. carried out the enabling works and constructed the foundation system for the Emirates Pearl Tower and Bab El Qasr Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Emirates Pearl Tower is a joint venture project of TDIC- Tourism Development and Investment Company and ATLAS group, a leading telecommunication company in the UAE. Bab El Qasr Hotel is a project of EMROC Emirate-Moroccan General Trading & Investment Company. The combined enabling project is executed under the combined management of JACOBS International Holdings Inc. and NASSAR Engineering Services.The project is located to the south-east of Emirates Palace and west of Etihad towers, at about 20m away from the sea shore. Since the two projects are located next to each other a combined shoring system was constructed for the entire area. This decision was based on an agreement with clients and consultants of the two projects and resulted in significant savings for both parties. The shoring system consisted mainly of diaphragm wall with ground anchors and steel struts. Cantilever secant piles were used on the eastern side of the plot, adjacent to Etihad Towers` basement.PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF WORKNSCC International Ltd. was responsible for the design, procurement and construction of strutted and anchored diaphragm walls and cantilever secant piles. This report summarizes the results of metallurgical investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of manganese oxide ore, averaging 23 to 25 percent manganese, stockpiled at the Butte-Philipsburg depot of General Services Administration (GSA). The oxide ores were stockpiled in two general classifications, straight oxide ore and mixed oxide-carbonate ore. Continuous-circuit flotation tests at the Albany (Oreg.) Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines showed that each of these ore types could be concentrated by an oil-emulsion scheme to produce a concentrate that could be sintered to meet program specifications. About 88 percent of the manganese was recovered in the concentrate from the straight oxide sample, with the sintered concentrate containing 48 percent Mn. The sintered concentrate from the mixed oxide-carbonate sample contained 41 percent Mn with a recovery in the concentrate of 95 percent.
