THE Birmingham district, Alabama, is distinctive in the proximity to one another of its deposits of iron ore, coal and flux. These three basic requisites for the making of iron and steel are found within a radius of 10 miles. Both dolomite and limestone are produced, the former for blast-furnace flux and the latter for basic open-hearth operations. The Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co., a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation, operates a limestone mine at Muscoda, near Bessemer, 12 miles southwest of Birmingham, served by its own railroad transportation system. The mine has a capacity of 130 tons per hour. Average analyses of a recent month's production are as follows: Fe2O3 Si02 A12O3 CAC03 MGCO Lump, per cent 0.51 0.22 98.63 0.14 Crushed and washed, percent 0.70 0.26 98.36 0.18 Lump stone, 2 1/2 to 7 1/2 in., is used in open-hearth operations at Fairfield Steel Works. Fine crushed and washed stone, 1 ¼ to 0.063 in., is calcined at the, lime-burning plant and used for lime charges at the Ensley open hearths.

This discussion is concerned with those com-J- paratively infrequent bumps that eject material from the failed mass with enough energy to wreck heavy machinery and seriously injure or kill people. In such cases there is a loud report, and the pressure waves set up in the mine atmosphere wreck ventilation controls several hundred feet from the site of the failure. Vibrations are induced in the earth's crust which may be detected several miles from the point of origin, and explosive gases may be released in large quantities." Usually a dense suspension of dust is produced from the failed mass, together with dust placed in suspension by the resulting air blast. These rock bursts or bumps have also been called mountain shots, bounces, pillar bursts, and crumps. Such occurrences, when extensive, are serious catastrophes, and may force abandonment of the mine.' CAUSES OF ROCK BURSTS Rock bursts in coal mines have occurred in sev-eral places under diverse geological conditions, mining methods, and/or practices. A study of many such occurrences indicates that they depend on the following conditions: 1) cover thickness of 500 ft or more, 2) cover composed of strong members and having a strong member lying close to or on the coal bed, and 3) a floor that does not readily heave. The minimum thickness of cover under which coal mine rock bursts occur is based on observation. Under unusual circumstances involving very strong roof members and/or mining systems, and/or practices especially likely to induce bursts, a burst conceivably could occur under less roof. Under special circumstances rock bursts have occurred in marble quarries almost at the surface.' Furthermore, under very heavy cover it is likely that controlling roof members need not be as strong and as close to the coal bed to cause bumps. Just what constitutes a strong roof or roof member is open to question. Obviously the strength of a roof member is determined by its thickness, the distance between bedding planes across which little or no bond exists, the spacing and development of joints, and the inherent strength of the rock material. Strata sections showing roofs under which rock bursts in coal mines have developed are illustrated in Fig. 2. In several instances the strength of rocks composing the roof of mines developing bumps has been tested. The tests (Table I) show that these rocks develop considerable strength in compression, bending, and shear and that in some cases the strengths are very high. No quantitative data are available concerning joints in roof members over coal beds where rock bursts have occurred, but the author has examined many mines subject to bursts and has received the impression that joints in the shales immediately over the coal beds are always present and well developed. In the main sandstone or conglomerate members themselves, however, where observed, he has yet to see a fracture system indicating well developed joints. Undoubtedly joints are present, but the evidence indicates that they are few, poorly developed, and widely spaced. In a mine subject to bumps, moreover, actual measurements of roof spans up to 225 ft between supports under a cover of about 800 ft have been made before roof failure occurred. Such spans signify strong roof. In coal beds subject to rock bursts, the bottom rock is usually a sandy shale. A few tests (Table I) have been made on the floor rock of coal beds. Observations in mines indicate that they are usually weaker than roof rocks and that under load they show more plastic effects. Observation in ground subject to bursts invariably indicates a relatively strong floor highly resistant to heaving, although some heaving may occur. Other factors listed as favorable to rock bursts are: 1) mountainous surface; 2) steeply dipping beds; 3) proximity of faults, folds, and other similar geologic structures. Many bursts have occurred in mines under mountainous country, although many bursts in mines under a surface with little relief indicate that thickness of cover, not relief, is the essential factor. In steeply dipping beds, many bursts occur in mines that are essentially flat, and rock bursts have been recorded in beds dipping as much as 35o Most rock bursts in the U. S. occur in beds that dip less than 10 pct. It is also true that most U. S. coal is produced from beds dipping less than 10 pct. Geologically, faults are regarded as providing stress relief, but in the vicinity of faults, as well as sharp folds, it would seem that residual stresses could be present. The fact that rock bursts occur in areas remote from faults and sharp folds suggests that their presence is not necessary for this phenomenon to take place. There have been many bursts close to faults and folds, and it may be assumed that occasionally such structures accentuate their occurrence3 The conditions and circumstances under which they occur, coupled with the effects produced, leave In the Crowsnest Pass coalfield, British Columbia, a rock burst is estimated to have released 1.8 million cu ft of methane.

"In late 1985, Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited announced the Namew Mine/Mill project. Environmental baseline monitoring and planning began in early 1985 while a major drilling program was under way to delineate the ore deposit. This paper overviews the environmental assessment work conducted for the mine/mill operation, and outlines the tailings and water management practices.Planned environmental works and approach were affected in late 1988 when a massive water problem was encountered in the mine. The requirement to depressurize the rock surrounding the underground workings led to the need to develop, on short notice, an environmentally-acceptable procedure to dispose of a large volume of slightly-saline water.Biological toxicity tests performed on the depressurized effluent proved the effluent to be non-toxic and thus allowed resolution of the disposal problem. This resolution includes the conversion of a large water body from native fish species to a rainbow trout fishery."

As the high-grade copper deposits in the world become depleted, there is an increasing focus on developing lower-grade ores which contain problematic impurities such as arsenic. Indeed, many high-arsenic ore bodies remain undeveloped because of their high arsenic levels. Separation of arsenic from copper at the beneficiation stage is difficult using the current processing techniques and invariably copper concentrates produced from these ores contain high arsenic levels, sometimes so high as to make them unacceptable to copper smelters. New, sustainable approaches are needed to allow development of high-arsenic copper ores while at the same time minimizing arsenic dispersion into the biosphere. The most promising route for separating arsenic from copper at the flotation stage centers on the use of pulp potential control. In recent years CSIRO has demonstrated at laboratory scale, for a number of high-arsenic copper ores, that crude flotation separation between arsenic-bearing minerals and copper-bearing minerals can be made. The differences in specific minerals responses to changes in pulp potential and pulp pH are exploited for this separation. Such separations nominally produce a low-arsenic high-copper concentrate and a low-copper high-arsenic concentrate. The former can be smelted without penalty, while the latter requires further treatment to capture and stabilize the arsenic and to recover the residual copper. Consideration has now been given to treatment options for the high-arsenic low-copper product. A pyrometallurgical option, involving a low temperature roast to selectively fume off the arsenic and leave a high-copper calcine, coupled with an arsenic stabilization step, has been demonstrated in the laboratory, and a preliminary techno-economic evaluation shows the process to be economically favorable. These results were recently published. CSIRO has now investigated an alternate hydrometallurgical option, involving atmospheric alkaline sulphide leaching of the high-arsenic product, where the arsenic is selectively dissolved leaving a copper-rich leach residue. The leaching testwork was carried at on the same high-arsenic low-copper material used in the roasting studies, enabling a techno-economic comparison of the alternate roasting and leaching treatment options to be made. The alkaline leaching work is briefly described and the results of the process option comparison presented and discussed. The ?-to-? transformation has been studied in zirconium alloys containing 22 to 70 wt pct U. In this range of compositions the ? phase can be retained by quenching. Transformation to ? occurs by a nucleation-and-growth process. The diffusion of atoms to preferred lattice sites to yield a partially ordered structure apparently controls the rate of reaction. Alpha uranium and a zirconium precipitate from the supersaturated E phase initially formed in alloys outside the equilibrium E phase composition limits. ZIRCONIUM-Uranium alloys have long been of interest for reactor-fuel applications because of the low thermal-neutron cross section of zirconium. Considerable information is available on the various properties and behavior of these alloys1 although there had been a number of areas where information was incomplete. As part of a program to provide more detailed knowledge in these areas, the presently reported investigation was undertaken. The constitutional diagram of the zirconium-uranium system is shown in Fig. 1.' The system is distinguished by a region of complete solid solubility between the body-centered cubic ß-zirconium and ? uranium phases and the existence of an intermediate phase in the vicinity of 50 wt pct U. This intermediate phase, designated as E, is reported3 to have a primitive hexagonal structure with a = 5.03 and c = 3.08A. The structure is partially ordered with zirconium atoms at the 0, 0, 0 position and zirconium and uranium atoms located randomly at the 1/3, 2/3, 1/2, and 2/3, 1/3, 1/2 positions. While the E phase may be nominally designated as of UZr2 stoichio-metry, the random distribution of uranium and zirconium atoms permit a considerable range in composition. Of interest in the research performed were alloys in the range from 20 wt pct (10 at. pct) to 70 wt pct (47 at. pct) U. In this range of compositions the body-centered-cubic ? phase can be retained either completely or partially on quenching. The nature and kinetics of transformation of the ? phase were the subject of study. Proceeding concurrently with the presently reported work was an investigation by Kearns4 which has since been reported. Kearns studied alloys containing 50 to 60 wt pct U prepared from sponge zirconium. While the work reported here is for alloys prepared from crystal-bar zirconium and the techniques of study are to some extent dissimilar to those employed by Kearns, general agreement so far as results and interpretation can be reported. Experimental Techniques—Alloys were prepared and the transformation of the ? phase studied during interrupted-quench and quench-and-temper isothermal heat treatments by means of hardness measurements and X-ray diffraction and metallographic techniques. The isothermal transformation of the ? phase on quenching and tempering was investigated further employing dynamic-modulus measurements. Electrical resistivity and limited Hall coefficient measurements were also obtained as part of the study. Alloy Preparation and Heat Treatment— Alloys containing 15, 20, 22, 30, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, and 70 wt pct U were prepared from as-reduced uranium and crystal-bar zirconium. The alloys were double arc melted by consumable-electrode are-melting techniques. The final ingots were forged and rolled at temperatures between 790" and 840oC to 1/4-in. rod and 1/8-in. sheet. Underground roof geology reconnaissance is being conducted by CONSOL Inc. to enhance mine productivity. Often, roof instability within mine entries is the consequence of highly variable geology that cannot always be detected from information provided by widely-spaced surface core holes. Utilizing a combination of roof drilling data, geophysical logs, and borehole camera and fiberscope observations, roof geology mapping is conducted within longwall development entries in areas of specific concern prior to commencement of longwall mining, Depending on the uniformity of the site-specific roof geology, data point spacing along the longwall development generally ranges from one to five crosscuts. Surface core hole data are correlated with the roof geology mapped underground to validate the underground observations. Detailed roof geology maps can then be produced to enable ground control engineers and mine management to select cost-effective ground control techniques. However, this procedure is not necessary or useful in all situations and it is employed only when there is strong geologic evidence to justify a closer inspection.

The use of activated carbon for extracting gold and silver from pregnant cyanide solution and pulp has been investigated many times. The primary advantage of this use of activated carbon is that .the dissolved values can be recovered from slimy ore pulps or from slime portions of ore without settling and thickening or filtering. The loaded carbon is removed from the barren pulp, and the pulp can then be discarded. Activated carbon has been used recently in treating gold ores containing very little soluble silver. When the carbon was loaded with a suitable amount of gold, the silver load was negligible. The remaining problems concerned the removal of the gold from the carbon, the recovery of the gold as bullion, and the reuse of the unloaded carbon. As described in a recent report, a method that solved these problems was developed. The gold-laden carbon was leached with caustic sodium sulfide solution and the gold simultaneously recovered by electrolysis. Both the carbon and the spent solution can be reused. That process was applicable to gold-laden carbon only. It was not applicable to carbon carrying silver, because sodium sulfide does not leach silver from carbon but "fixes" it. It has been necessary, therefore, to develop a modified process for the removal or desorption of both gold and silver from loaded carbon. This modi¬fied process permits the use of activated carbon for extracting both gold and silver from gold ores carrying enough silver to have economical interest or in which silver may be the predominating value.

"This paper presents some studies on recovering valuable elements from Chinese coal by-products, including coal combustion fly ash, stone coal ash, and coal flotation tailings. Both commercialized technologies and economic potential recovery methods are described in this study. Magnetically stabilized air-dense medium fluidized bed separation, tribo-electrostatic separation, froth flotation, and hydrometallurgical methods are discussed in recovering various valuable elements in Chinese coal by-products from different coalfields. These valuable elements include iron, carbon, aluminum, rare earth elements, lithium, gallium, germanium, uranium, titanium, scandium, silicon, vanadium and phosphorus, etc. The ultimate goal is to fully utilize all valuable elements in coal by-product. Each component within coal by-product should be efficiently segregated to its highest value. INTRODUCTION Coal is mainly composed of energy-producing elements carbon and hydrogen. In addition to these elements, coal usually contains many other valuable elements, including iron, aluminum, silicon, rare earth elements, lithium, gallium, germanium, vanadium, uranium, titanium, scandium, and phosphorus, etc. These coal-associated elements are significantly enriched in coal combustion by-product fly ash because of majority of main components, carbon and hydrogen elements, being removed. Table 1 provides the chemical composition range of the main elements oxides in 12 Chinese fly ash samples collected from coal power plants located in Northeast China, Northwest China, Southwest China, and Southeast China. It can be seen from Table 1 that the major mineral components of different ashes are similar, but the bulk chemistry of different fly ashes may vary widely due to the changes of ratios of the mineral components in different coals. The major mineral components in various Chinese coal combustion fly ash are silicates, iron oxides, and unburned carbon."

The iron ore industry presently utilizes two types of de-posits. The first are the high grade deposits generally located in remote areas and, secondly, the low grade de-posits which are normally found nearer to the steel-making centers. The high grade deposits produce a direct shipping ore which has an iron content which may be close to the maxi-mum 70% of Fe. These deposits have reserves which are ex-pressed in billions of tons. The ore needs little or no up-grading and where this is performed is restricted to ore washing. With the large demand for iron ore pellets, plus a national drive to perform as much of the upgrading as possible in the native country, there is a trend to erecting pellet plants at the mine location~ Large iron ore suppliers such as Australia, Brazil, Venezuela and Liberia already have pellet plants in operation, and there are new plants projected or expansion projects under study. The low grade ores are mined at locations closer to steel mills such as in Minnesota, Michigan and Canada. These low grade ores require methods of beneficiation to obtain a commercially accept-able product with the modern beneficiation techniques it is no~, possible to produce iron ore pellets of 68% Fe and 4.5% silica from ores containing as low as 26% Fe. Figure 1 gives a general picture of the types of iron ores and their beneficiation. The final product of the high grade ore is a coarse concentrate, sinter product or pellets. The final product of the low grade ores is pellets and, in some cases, coarse concentrates.

The geological mapping of Lincoln and Flathead Counties was a five-year project undertaken by the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology. This paper, written by the Project Geologist of the survey, is primarily concerned with the stratigraphy of the Belt rocks encountered in mapping. Lincoln and Flathead Counties of northwestern Montana are underlain by sedimentary rocks of the Belt Series of Precambrian age. In only a very small part of the area, near Libby and Troy, have economic mineral deposits been worked with any success. Most of the area has been inadequately mapped as to geology. The region is crossed by the Great Northern Railway and served by the Pacific Power and Light Co.; officials of these two companies believed that with better geologic maps, prospecting might be stimulated and lead to the discovery of mineral resources that would contribute to new economic development within the area. A cooperative mapping agreement was proposed jointly by the two companies to the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology in May 1958, and thus was born the Kootenai-Flathead five-year project. The dual objectives of this project are: 1) the possible location of mineral deposits of economic value, and 2) the ''stimulation of prospecting exploration" by others. This was to be achieved by geologic mapping of some 6800 sq miles and by establishing a field office in Kalispell where prospectors could come to have their rocks and minerals identified and receive geological advice on their problems. This writer has finished four field seasons as Project Geologist and thus became familiar with the Belt section in the Libby, Yaak River, Ural, Thompson Lakes, Pleasant Valley, and Stryker quadrangles (see Fig. 1). Progress on the project is given in annual reports issued by the Bureau.* This *Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, Bulletins 12 (1959), 17 (1960), and 23 (1961). paper is concerned essentially with the stratigraphy of the Belt rocks so far encountered in mapping. PREVIOUS WORK IN THE AREA Willis28 made the first study of the stratigraphy and structure in the Lewis and Livingston Ranges of Glacier Park just east of the project area. In 1904, Daly made a study of the Belt rocks of the 49th parallel, using the names from bottom up, Creston, Kitchener, Moyie, and Gateway, for rocks ranging in age from that of Prichard to that of basal Missoula group. Walcott26 studied the Belt rocks exposed in the Mission Range (see Fig. 1) and other areas to the south of the area under discussion. Calkins and McDonald made a reconnaissance of northern Idaho and northwestern Montana in 1905. Calkins was the first to use Walcott's term 'Ravalli' as a group name for the strata equivalent to the Burke, Revett, and St. Regis formations (see Table I). "IntroductionFlue dust which results from the smelting of ores containing appreciable quantities of fines is one of the troublesome products of iron blast-furnace practice. Gases issuing from the furnaces at a high velocity carry small particles of coke, ore and flux into dust-collecting chambers. These particles constitute the flue dust. Lasses of iron ore through the production of flue dust vary between wide limits in the different furnaces, and depend on a number of factors, such as size and design of furnace, amount of fines in the ore, the operating conditions and the blast pressure.Blast-furnace operators of the Birmingham district keenly realize this waste. The ores are comparatively low grade and require more fuel than is ordinarily used elsewhere. Hence the flue dust is low in iron content and high in coke. As a result it is not in suitable condition for direct sintering. In many other iron and steel centers direct sintering is a common practice. In the Birmingham district efforts have been made to prevent this loss by recharging the dust into the furnace, but, as might be expected, a material fine enough to be blown out once will very likely be carried over again.In general, the flue-dust losses in this district will average 250 pounds per ton of pig iron produced, but at times the losses at different furnaces are substantially higher or lower than this figure. On the basis of the present rate of pig-iron production, the annual loss of flue dust exceeds 300,000 tons. The iron content of the dust probably averages 25 per cent, therefore about 75,000 tons of iron is wasted yearly, or about 3 per cent of the iron mined is lost in flue dust."

Recent publication of United States Bureau of Mines figures showed that the sand and gravel (3) industry is the largest single mining industry in the United States in term of yearly tonnage produced. The yearly production of over 500,000,000 tons per year now exceed bituminous coal production. This disclosure caught unawares many observers who have not been following closely the rapid-growth of this phase of mining. Along with this steady growth in production, the sand and gravel industry has gone through an accelerated and varied program of beneficiation in a period of the last ten years.

This Spotlight gives a brief summary of the proposed 1991 tax amendments of relevance to mines and mining houses. It should be read together with the author's article South African mining tax in the 1990's', which appeared in the August 1990 issue of this Journal. A number of tax amendments of relevance to the mining industry were proposed by the Minister of Finance in his March 1991 budget speech. In addition, certain other measures that may be implemented were set out in the budget review document released at the same time. A word of caution is necessary: these measures will become law only if and when they are enacted in the appropriate legislation. When this legislation is tabled in June, it may not contain all of the measures discussed below, some of the measures may appear in modified form, and other measures not discussed at the time of the budget may well appear. Unless otherwise stated, the 1991 tax amendments will affect companies with years of assessment ending in the twelve-month period to 31st March, 1992.

K ENTUCKY'S first acid-grade fluorspar flotation Kmill, shown in Fig. 1, was placed in operation Aug. 1, 1952, by the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Co. at Mexico, Ky. During 1951 a critical shortage of acid-grade fluorspar developed and it became necessary for the company to produce part of its fluorspar requirements. In 1951 the company purchased the Crider and Lennen metallurgical fluorspar mill and an adjacent stockpile of tailing at Mexico, Ky. The tailing, assaying about 26 pct calcium fluoride, originated from log washer and jig mill concentrators in the area. As the mill did not have a fluorspar dryer or convenient rail facilities, the company leased the Burleson concentrator at Marion, Ky., where these facilities were available. At Marion, Ky., on the Illinois Central Railroad, dry acid-grade fluorspar is transported direct to the company's Calvert City, Ky., hydrofluoric acid plant. The Mexico flotation plant was reconditioned and designed to produce acid-grade fluorspar from the jig tailing stockpile. The new plant flowsheet is shown in Fig. 2. The ore feed, old tailing, which contains 10 pct of waste rock and coarse gravel assaying approximately 8 pct CaF,, is bound together by sticky clay

El objetivo del presente trabajo es describir el sistema de relleno hidraúlico en los tajeos de vetas angostas de la mina de Morococha a través del método "Arch Back". Actualmente el sistema de relleno convencional es lento, costoso y ofrece desventajas respecto del *R/H. Los objetivos del R/H son aumentar la eficacia de minado, controlar las leyes del mineral, minar los tajeos de baja ley, mejorar el sostenimiento de las cajas y la baja de costo. En este sentido, se describen las operaciones unitarias de los tajeos con R/H y se comparan con los métodos convencionales, encontrando eficiencias en los tajeos aplicados con el método Arch Back y los tajeos de vetas angostas, así como se mejora la producción y los costos de la misma.

Chalcopyrite and pyrite are among the major gold bearing minerals in the world. The gold content in chalcopyrite and pyrite varies from 0.02 to 200 ppm and 0.01 to 20 ppm, respectively. Apart from gold, chalcopyrite is also the primary source of copper. Thus, the recovery of gold and copper are often associated with the recovery of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Flotation is one of the most successful methods applied to beneficiate chalcopyrite and pyrite. The success of a flotation process depends on an appropriate choice of the flotation collector used to achieve the desired selectivity. A thorough understanding of the atomic structure of the predominantly exposed mineral surfaces can immensely aid in developing highly selective collectors that can exploit both the physical and chemical characteristics of these surfaces. In the present study, density functional theory calculations within the plane wave framework are used to understand the surface structure and reconstruction of the most stable chalcopyrite (001), (100), (110) and (112) and most stable pyrite (100) surfaces. The chalcopyrite (001) and (100) metal-terminated surfaces undergo significant reconstruction and result in metal-metal bond formation in the sub-surface layer while the surface layer is replaced by S-atoms. On the other hand, the (001) and (100) S-terminated surfaces show S—S disulfide bond formation upon relaxation, which are consistent with literature reports. The chalcopyrite (110), (112) surfaces and pyrite (100) surface undergo rearrangement, but no reconstructions in terms of metal-metal or disulfide bond formation are observed on these surfaces. This is one of a series of reports being published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs at various mines throughout the United States. Including the Holden mine in this series is particularly appropriate at this time. The mine was operated on a low-cost, large-scale production basis to compensate for low-grade ore. Even with the best conditions and the most efficient methods, the margin of profit was small. Under the present situation of rising costs and lowering metal prices, the profit margin vanished. On June 28, 1957, the mine operations ceased; therefore, this report can review the entire life span of the mine.
