Technology for treating man-made metal-containing raw materials in DC electric furnaces with polarization of the bottom phase (PDF furnaces) has been developed and proven on a semi-commercial scale. PDF furnaces permit processing of man-made raw materials, i.e. current and accumulated intermediate products with rather high contents of valuable metals (i.e. slags, sludge, residues, Waelz slag, etc.), as well as secondary raw materials and virtually any type of waste using an environmentally safe technique based on sublimation of volatile metals and transfer of non-volatile metals and sulfur into the bottom phase in the furnace. Processes developed on the basis of the use of PDF furnaces make it possible to take advantage on a full commercial scale of electrolysis of molten materials, including electrochemical reduction of metals, intensification of their settling into the bottom phase and sublimation of volatile components, as well as to significantly improve recoveries of nonferrous metals, resolve the problem of excessive accretion formation in slagging processes and substantially improve the environmental situation. The low-grade discard slag obtained can be utilized in the construction industry; in particular, slag can be added to the limestone feed for cement manufacture.

The mechanical properties of yellow brass (C85800), high strength yellow brass (C86300), and high manganese brasses (C99700 and C99750) cast in permanent molds have been studied. The tensile properties as well as fracture and impact toughness of these alloys are strongly dependent on the chemical composition. Alloys and/or compositions exhibiting relatively high zinc equivalent often exhibited high ultimate tensile strength and yield strength with significant reduction in ductility (% elongation). In order to achieve optimum properties with a good balance between strength and ductility, a calculation of the zinc equivalent before alloy preparation can be useful.

The pyrometallurgy industry faces a series of environmental challenges, based on local, national and global issues. While local impacts continue to be important, national and global concerns with Sustainable Development, Greenhouse emissions, Acid Rain and water resources are key strategic drivers for the industry. The environmental problems of the industry are well known: emissions of sulphur dioxides and carbon dioxide, disposal of arsenic wastes, consumption of fresh water, fate and impact of minor components/trace elements in raw materials (whether conventional or complex, or wastes). Solutions to these problems require the application of Cleaner Production principles (waste minimisation, energy conservation, product design to enable ease of post consumer recycling), new technology and scientific studies to assess impacts of discharges. Solvent extraction tests were carried out on a rare earth chloride solution derived from monazite processing to determine the effect of extractant and diluent on the distribution coefficients between organic and aqueous phases, and the separation factor between rare earths. The extractants were 20% by volume di-2-ethyl-hexyl phosphoric acid (DZEHPA) or 2-ethyl-hexyl phosphonic acid (Ionquest® 801). Four Shellsol diluents were tested ranging from nil to 100% aromatic content. D2EHPA gave the highest rare earth extraction for a given pH but was less selective than Ionquest. The geometric mean separation factor between adjacent rare earths varied from 2.41-2.56 for D2EHPA to 2.62-3.01 for Ionquest. The nil-aromatic diluents (Shellsol 2037 and 2358) gave better separation factors in Ionquest but, in D2EHPA, were slightly inferior to the 100% aromatic diluent Shellsol AB. Yttrium behaved as a pseudo-heavy rare earth with a distribution coefficient lying between Ho and Er, as expected from its ionic radius.

In the present study the utilization of coal ashes that appear at the end of firing process of brick production in cement pastes was examined. Ashes with three different particle sizes of 75 µm, 106 µm and 150 µm were used to replace ordinary Portland cement (PC) as 5 % and 15 % by weight. Seven samples were prepared and physical, mechanical, chemical and microstructural analyses were carried out. The compressive and bending strength values of samples were determined at the ages of 2, 7 and 28 days. It was found that cementitious pastes with finer particle sizes possessed the highest compressive and bending strength values at all curing ages. Both values after 2 and 7 days cure increased with an increase in ash content, no matter what the particle sizes of ashes were. However, strength decreased after 28 days cure as a result of ash addition of 15 %, although it was still above that of the PC.

The total pressure oxidation treatment of arsenical copper ore and concentrate from the El Indio mine of Banick Gold was tested in benchtop autoclave treatment. The concentrate oxidation typically achieved ~95% copper extraction. Copper extraction was limited by the reprecipitation of a complex precipitate containing arsenic. Gold extraction by cyanidation of the oxidation residue was around 95%. Silver extractions were less than 10% due to the formation of argentojarosite in the autoclave. The total pressure oxidation of the whole ore sample was more successful. Copper extractions of 98-99% were routine achieved. Gold extraction by cyanidation was +95%. Silver extraction could be increased to as high as 95% by using the lime boil treatment. A process flowsheet was proposed based on the results achieved. Copper recovery was proposed by direct solvent extraction and electrowinning of copper by treating the dilute solution from the autoclave discharge.

Outlined new development strategies and ways of improvement in this business, including research, development and management of the works that today posses characteristics of a profitable operation, as well as the changes expected with respect to the entry of new actors and the creation of new products The authors finally bet for small or tailor-made smelters with ad hoc technology for their raw materials and few units to coordinate -devoted to specific concentrates using high technology and low manpower. Considering the in-situ hydrometallurgical route, as well as the pyrometallurgical route in works or conversion facilities that buy or process white metal and produce copper and other metals associated with this such as gold and silver, besides sulfuric acid, plants which should be strategically located in zones with high sulfuric acid price to make this a product which contributes to the profitability of the business.

The extent and the rate of reduction of slags produced from the smelting of recycled lead batteries were investigated under laboratory conditions using graphite as reductant. Simultaneous reduction of PbO, Fe2O3, Sb2O3 and As2O3 occurred at temperatures of 1180 and 1200°C, with Sb and As reporting to the metal phase while the PbO content of the slag was above 2 wt%. Fuming of As from the metal occurred at lower concentrations of lead in the slag. Discard slags with low levels of As, Pb and Sb were produced. Arsenic levels were reduced to less than accurately measurable by ICP analysis, and Sb levels in the final slags were in the range of 0.1 to 0.2 wt%. The kinetic data obtained were analysed and compared with other measurements on lead oxide containing slags. The results showing a dependence of the reduction rate on the oxidation state and the basicity are consistent with other studies on well characterised industrial and. synthetic lead slags. These results indicate that when carbonaceous reductants are used, the rate of interfacial reactions play an important role in enabling the production of environmentally acceptable discard slags.

The Li-N-H system composed of LiH and LiNH2 catalyzed by titanium compound desorbs ~6 mass% hydrogen and a quite small amount of ammonia in temperature range from 150 to 250 °C under He flow atmosphere. In this work, hydrogen desorption (H-desorption) mechanism in the reaction from LiH+LiNH2 to Li2NH+H2 in a non-equilibrium condition was clarified by TDMS, TG and FT-IR analyses for the products replaced by LiD or LiND2 for LiH or LiNH2,respectively. The results suggested that H-desorption reaction progresses through two-step elementary reactions mediated by ammonia. As a next step, we carefully determined the amount of the ammonia containing in desorbed hydrogen for the Li-N-H system in a closed system from the practical point of view. The results indicated that a quite small of ammonia thermodynamically coexisted in the desorbed hydrogen in closed system, although ammonia could not be almost detected in emitted hydrogen gas by TDMS under some non-equilibrium conditions. Moreover, for understanding the role of titanium, the chemical bonding state of the titanium compounds doped as catalyst in the mixture was examined by XAFS measurement. The results indicate that the Ti atoms, which can induce catalytic effect, are in a particular chemical bonding state.

In-situ composites were produced in both Ti matrix (Ti-20Y) and Mg matrix (Mg-20Ti, Mg- 20Nb, Mg-20Fe, and Mg-8Li) alloys. In Ti-20Y, a < 1010 > fiber texture formed in both the Ti and Y phases, and UTS increased from 240 MPa, (as-cast) to 950 MPa after deformation processing to a true strain of 7.3. Deformation processing produced smaller UTS increases in the Mg-matrix composites, but they showed exceptional resistance to weakening from exposure to elevated temperatures. The Mg-20Fe, Mg-20Nb. and Mg-20Ti composites tolerated 6-hour exposure to 400°C with no reduction in their 250 to 300 MPa room temperature UTS. All composites studied had excellent ductility and machinability.

Bamboo fibers were characterized in terms of diameter distribution and tensile properties. Polyester matrix composites reinforced with these fibers were investigated for their flexural mechanical behavior. Specimens with up to 30% in volume of continuous and aligned bamboo fiber composites were bend-tested until fracture. The results showed an improvement in the composite strength and stiffness with the amount of bamboo fiber. A microstructure analysis by scanning electron microscopy revealed a reasonable adhesion between the fiber and the polyester matrix which justifies the improved mechanical properties of the composites.

The magnetic properties of (NdDy)15Fe78B6 sintered magnets have been evaluated using powder prepared by Inert gas atomization. The atomized powder had a particle size distribution from 1 to approximate 1000 microns. The as atomized powders have been sieved into, coarse, intermediate, and fine fractions; magnetic properties were evaluated for the as produced powder and each fraction. A B, of 11.7 kG, a Hci of 11.0 kOe and a BHmax of 32.5 MGOe was -obtained on a sintered magnet made from the as-atomized powder. The magnet made from coarse powder exhibited a slightly higher B, of 12.1 kG, while that from fine powder showed a decrease in B, to 11.2 kG. Hydrogen decrepitation has been utilized to study its effect on the magnetic properties. Finally, cast ingots with a definite columnar structure have also been used to compare the magnetic properties of magnets of the same nominal, composition but of different alloy preparation process. Hydrogen decrepitation does not appear to improve the magnetic properties of magnets made from thin cast ingots. However, it does show a significant improvement in the Hci of magnets made from the atomized powders. Possible causes for the differences in the magnetic properties on magnets made from each process have been discussed in the paper.
