As part of its research program, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the partitioning of complex minerals to simpler phases using sulfidation reactions for selective extraction of mineral constituents of value from extraneous elements early in processing schemes. This report describes research in which thermal processing of the complex Ti -bearing mineral ilmenite (FeTiO, ) resulted in partitioning of the valuable Ti metal to the simpler compound rutile (Ti0 ). Samples of ilmenite were blended with elemental S for thermal treatment a2 various temperatures under controlled atmospheres in an effort to dissociate the Fe from the ilmenite complex. Product characterization revealed that the Fe was partitioned from the ilmenite, forming a rim of pyrrhotite/pyri te (FeS/FeS,) on a rutile core. The products were agate milled and then subjected to cursory magnetic and flotation techniques in an attempt to physically separate the partitioned phases. Partitioning results and phase concentration data are reported relative to thermal treatment variables and physical separation techniques.

Nickel solubilities in spent pickling solutions (i.e. HF-HNO3-H2O solutions ) were measured as a function of HF and HNO3 acid concentrations. The chemical analysis of the industrial pickling solutions and sludges were made. The stable phases observed in the sludges are FeF3?3H2O, and ( FeCr ) F3?3H2O. Pure Ni, and stainless steel type 316 were used in this study. The results showed that the solubility of Ni increased with increase in concentrations of HF in pickling solution at a fixed concentration of HNO3: An excellent agreement between the experimental solubility data and the theoretical data was obtained. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the solid solubility product formed is mainly NiF2?4H2O compound.

Two innovations in nickel-arsenic separation have been studied on a laboratory scale. The first requires only a nitric acid atmospheric leach without preliminary roasting and leads to favorable final conditions for precipitation of arsenic as highly stable FeAsO4, The second is an NaOH-H2O2 pressure leach which is an alternative to the known NaOH-O2 pressure leach. Either method offers the possibility of rapid and efficient separation of nickel from arsenic and is applicable, for example to the high grade niccolite deposits in the Great Slave Lake area of northern Canada.

The electrodeposition of zinc from zinc oxide using urea and choline chloride mixture in a molar ratio 2:1 is investigated in different experimental variables, namely, the concentration of added [BMIM]HSO4, temperature, and applied cell voltage. The additive, [BMIM]HSO4, was determined to have beneficial effect on the current efficiency, energy consumed in the process and surface morphology of the deposits. The highest current efficiency (92.6%) and lowest energy consumption (2.92kWh/kg) was obtained for solution with 20mg/mL [BMIM]HSO4. The morphology showed the formation of absorbed additive layer on the cathode at higher concentration of additives. Experiments were conducted at different temperatures between 343K and 388K and at various applied cell voltages between 2.7V to 3.6V to determine the best experimental conditions. By varying temperature, highest current efficiency (91.3%) and lowest energy consumption (2.69 kWh/kg) was obtained at 373K. The electrodeposition process is enhanced between the applied voltage 3.0-3.3V by achieving lower energy consumption (2.75~3.06kWh/kg) and higher current efficiency (88.4~89.7%). SEM images showed grain size is significantly increased in higher applied voltages. While at higher temperatures, it seemed to generate particle growth as clusters at the outer deposit layer.

"In this work, the combination of microwave drying (MWD) and heat pump drying (HPD) drying experiments were designed by response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD) using design expert software (Version 7.15), and the process parameters were optimized. The conditions given by software are: the MWD time is 4.6 or 4.4 min; the HPD time is 9.0 or 8.6 min; and the sample mass is 620 or 600 g. Under those conditions the moisture content is 1.0 10-2kg water/kg wet basis, and the effectiveness ratio is 0.70 kg water/kwh. The results of confirmatory experiments conducted under the optimized conditions show the combined drying have superiority of decrease of energy consumption and increase of handling capacity over the single MWD or HPD.1 IntroductionSilica sand is one of a silicate mineral with properties as hard, anti-friction and less reactive, commonly used as raw material for foundry and construction. The silica sand obtained from mineral dressing processes such as scrubbing, magnetic separation and flotation. Its moisture content is approximately 0.08~0.12 kg water/kg wet basis. The most common methods used for drying are solar drying and hot air drying. But these methods have some shortcomings: for example, the solar drying has longer process time due to low energy yield, [1] hot air drying has low-energy efficiency and a lengthy drying time. [2]Microwave is electromagnetic waves with frequency are 300MHz to 300GHz. The outstanding features of microwave heating are rapidity and selectivity. The water specific inductive capacity of 60~78 is much bigger than common materials, the moisture always quickly absorb electromagnetic wave and rapidly transfer to vapors. So, it can significant reduce the drying time. [3] Heat pumps (HPs) are devices for raising the temperature of low grade heat energy to a more useful level using a relatively small amount of high grade energy."

Sintering-pot tests and metallurgical performances of sinter with 4 kind of different Al2O3 contents are experimented in this paper. Results show: when the Al2O3 contents increase from 2.0% to 3.5%, acicular calcium ferrites in mine phase will be gradually replaced by plate-like iron calcium. The increase of Al2O3 contents will lead to the addition of liquid viscosity and the reduction of permeability of sinter bed. Sintering time will be prolonged. The rate of yield is stable basically but production is low; besides, the increase of liquid viscosity will decrease of drum strength. The change of permeability of the material layer will make RDI +3.15 decrease first and then increase when Al2O3 contents changed from 2.0% to 3.5%. RI of sinter shows a contrary trend because many open voids are formed by deterioration of liquidity first and then pores closed.

The high content of sodium and potassium in sinter is harmful for blast furnace ironmaking. Reductive sintering technology can remove more alkali metals than conventional sintering process. In order to improve the removal ratios of Na and K, reductive sintering with both CO-containing flue gas circulation and carbon-bearing pellet was conducted in this study. Experimental results show that all indexes except the VSV and P were improved in reductive sintering with CO circulation. Flue gas circulation technique combined with carbon-bearing pellets were beneficial to reductive sintering, because it could maintain good sintering indexes and enhance the removal of Na, K. The best removal ratios of Na, K and reduction degree of iron oxides were 20.37%, 63.73% and 23.76%. In reductive finished sinter, silicate mineral becomes the important binder phase, and main iron mineral phases are wustite (FexO) and magnetite (Fe3O4).

"An experiment (mixture) design was created to optimize the process parameters of the electrochemical reduction of CaW04 to W in molten CaCl2-NaCl eutectic mixture. Temperature, applied voltage and the length of Kanthal wire winding of the CaW04 pellets were selected as the process parameters that were allowed to vary between the predetermined minimum and maximum values. The rates of the electrochemical reductions were interpreted from the variations of current and total charge vs. time graphs under different conditions. The analysis pointed out that 640°C and 2.81 V resulted in the fastest reduction. Itwas seen that the effect of Kanthal wire winding on the output current was less pronounced when compared to the other two parameters.IntroductionFFC Cambridge Process [1] has been applied to a number of metal oxides in laboratory experiments to produce metals. In nearly all of these studies, the electrolysis temperature was around 900°C, the electrolyte was pure CaCl2 or CaCl2 containing salt solutions and the anode was graphite. "Printed circuit boards (PCB) are particularly problematic to recycle because of the heterogeneous mix of organic materials, metals, and glass fiber. PCBs are found in almost every electroelectronic equipment and their recycling process involves a pre-treatment to separate the products which contain targeted metals. In this work, a physical processing involving sequential shredding and hanuner milling were used to obtain a comminuted sample from scrap printers PCBs. The thus prepared sample was analyzed for particle size distribution and by optical microscopy as well was subjected to pyrolysis, leachabilty and chemical composition determination by XRF. The metals concentration was determined by ICP and AAS. The PCBs have been also analyzed by SEM-EDS (micro-analysis and X-ray mapping). The results show that the studied PCBs are lead free, multilayer with 4 copper layers, have 45% of metals and the copper is present in significantly higher concentration than the rest of the metals.IntroductionThe global generation of e-waste (electrical and electronic equipment waste - WEEEs) grows at a rate of about 40 millions of tons per year [ l].Among this e-waste there are PCBs that are present in almost all electronic equipment. Their composition is heterogeneous and varies according to several factors, including: kind of EEE, when and where it was produced, fabrication technology [2], etc. In printers, the PCBs represent about 6.6- 8 wt.% [3].The PCBs treatment may include physical, pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, ectrometallurgical and more recently bio-hydrometallurgical process. Normally there is a combination between these processes [2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10].The diversity between the different PCBs composition complicates the recycling process since the composition of metal and others materials can vary according to the models. So characterization is an indispensable step before any processing of PCB to begin. Owing to the above said, the main goal of this work has been set to characterize representative samples of PCBs from printers through physical, chemical and microstructural analyses."

In the experiments of purifying the solution of chlorine leaching from nickel concentrate with N235, the effects of organic phase composition on purifying efficiency have been studied. From the results obtained, the optimal organic phase composition is found to be 25%N235+12%isomerous alcohol +63%sulfonic kerosene (VIV) and the saturated content of cobalt in organic phase is7.95 g*dm3. And then the serial experiment is carried out. The results show that at the given organic phase composition, the purified solution contains p(Ni) >200 gm dm3, p(Ni)l p(Co) >50000 and the contents of Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn meet the technical criterion of standard nickel electrolyte. The cobalt chloride solution contains p(Co) >I10 g L-1, p(Co) lp(Ni)>50000 and the enrichment of cobalt has been achieved.

"According to the reaction shaft operation characteristics during the flash smelting process, 15 groups of slag samples containing high Fe3O4 were prepared by some chemical reagents, and then the slag viscosities were measured using a RTW-10 type synthetic test instrument for melt physical property by the rotating cylinder method. The effects of Fe/SiO2 ratio (mFe/mSiO2), Fe3O4 content (wFe3O4), Cu2o), MgO content (WMgO) and Cao content (wCaO) on the slag viscosity were also studied. Results show that slag viscosity is decreased with the increase of temperature, mFe/mSiO2, wCu2o, wMgO and wCao, and with the decrease of wFe3O4, under the range of slag contents: mFe/mSiO2 1.36~1.78, wFe3O4 17.83%~21.18%, wCu2o 3.51%~8.34%m wNgI 2.21%~6.57%m w/caI 6.22%~9.387% and temperature range if 1250 o/c~1450 oC. Only wFe3O4m and w/caO have great influence on the slag viscosity when temperatures as high as 1400 oC. Only wFe3O4 and wCaO have great influence on the slag viscosity when temperatures as high as 1400 oC or so. To form a freeze slag with higher viscosity inside the reaction shaft, wFe3O4 should be more than 20% and wCaO should be less then 6%.IntroductionSince its appearance in 1949, Outokumpu flash smelting technology has making continuous innovation and has become the most competitive intensified smelting technology [1], widely considered to be the standard clean smelting process [2]. At present, flash smelting technology is adopted to newly build or reconstruct most of the world's copper or nickel smelting enterprise [3]. Reaction shaft is the most important part of the flash smelting furnace. During the flash smelting process, reaction shaft must be able to withstand the following harsh conditions at the same time: 1) high temperature varying from 1400 °C to 1500 °C. 2) strong oxidative atmosphere containing 50% - 80% oxygen. 3) solid particles and melt with speed up to l00 m/s. 4) high acidic or basic slag with strong chemical corrosiveness. 5) smelting gas containing 50% - 80% SO2. 6) matte with strong dissolution."

Mineralogical and image analysis studies have been performed on four volcanogenic base metal ores that contain 0.01 to 4.5 wt% Pb to determine the behaviour of galena during mineral processing. The galena in these ores is fine grained and is poorly liberated in both the primacy and regrind mill discharges. Consequently, low grade Pb concentrates are produced to obtain relatively high Pb recoveries. The Pb concentrates contain many impurities including high amounts of pyrite and sphalerite, and small amount of CU-, As-, Ag-, Bi-, and Se-sulfides. These impurities need to be rejected from the Pb bullion during smelting. The galena commonly contains up to 1 wt% Ag in solid solution with an average of 600 to 1460 ppu for the deposits studied to date. The Ag in galena accounts for up to 65% of the Ag in some ores.

In pressure oxidation leaching of copper anode slimes, than 65% of the tellurium is m' cxtraoted during decopperizing. About l0- 15% of the selenium is also dissolved simultane¬ously by severe leach conditions. Current operation for the treatment of the leachate is to constantly recirculate the leach solution through a bed of copper turnings. The tellurium and sele¬nium are precipitated from the leach liquor as copper telluride and copper selenide and sepa¬rated from the solution by filtration. In order to improve the reaction efficiency and reduce the process cost, viz, minimize the copper addition, cut retention time, and reduce the energy consumption; a chemical reducing agent is studied and the cementation process tested in the laboratory. In this paper, the test results are presented and the process chemistry is discussed.

"The traditional process for recovery of metals from waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) usually involves pyrometallurgical processing. However, the application of this technology to processing waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) might lead to the formation of dioxins and furans, due to thermal degradation of flame-retardants and polymeric resins present in the board substrate. Therefore, this paper proposes a hydrometallurgical route for the recovery of copper. The acid leaching behavior of copper has been investigated at three different temperatures (25°C, 50°C and 75°C) with and without the addition of an oxidizing agent (hydrogen peroxide - H202). The dissolution kinetics for acid copper leaching was calculated based on chemical analysis by ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma - Optical Emission Spectroscopy). At 50°C with 1 mol/L H2S04 added 10 mL H202 (30%) each half hour under pulp density of 1 g I 10 mL, 100% of copper was extracted after 3 hours. The dissolution kinetics of copper with H2SO4-H2O 2 followed 1 - (1 - X)113 =Ket, i.e. chemically controlled reaction model.IntroductionThe information regarding the generation of waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) are still difficult to obtain because the estimates should take into consideration the historical production and sale of various products and the rate at which they reach the end of their life cycle, whose duration depends on the behavior of consumers [1]. Thus, the estimated overall WEEE generation varies between 25 and 50 million tons each year, which corresponds to more than 5% of all municipal waste generated [2], and this amount will increase at a rate of 3 to 5% per year, approximately three times faster than other individual types of waste [3].Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are essential parts of electric and electronic equipment (EEE), being found in virtually all electronic products, as well as in weapons systems [4]. A PCB is a basic component, which consists of a board where copper tracks are deposited. While the board behaves as an electrical insulator, the tracks connect electrically the various components attached to the board [ 5]. In addition to glass fibers, paper and resins, the PCBs contain significant amounts of metals, such as copper, iron, nickel, lead, stain, silver, gold and palladium [6]. In general, the weight fraction of metal is around 28% and the remainder of the boards is composed of plastic (19%), bromine (as flame retardant - 4%) and ceramic material (49%) [7]."

"CdSi-xTex thin films with O<x<0.3 were prepared on glass substrates by the annealing of CdS:In thin films produced by the spray pyrolysis technique. The annealing was performed in nitrogen atmosphere at 400 --,C in the presence of Te vapor. The compositions of the films were determined by energy dispersive X-ray detection (EDAX) measurements. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the morphology of the films. The transmittance of the films was measured at room temperature in the wavelength range 400-1100 nm and used to produce the absorbance of the films. The first derivative of the absorbance was used to estimate the optical bandgap energy Eg by using the minima in the first derivative. The relation between the bandgap energy and the fraction x was found to fit with a parabola and bandgaps in the range 2.196: =Eg: =2.480 e V were obtained. Urbach tailing in the bandgap was also investigated.IntroductionPolycrystalline thin film CdS/CdTe solar cells are promising candidates for low cost and high efficiency photovoltaic applications. The fabrication process of these cells involves the deposition of a p-type CdTe absorber layer on top of an n-type CdS one which acts as a window. The efficiency of the solar cell is affected by the method of preparation of both layers [1, 2].Interdiffusion processes taking place at the CdS/CdTe interface have largely been realized to significantly affect the device performance [3] by changing the bandgap of both CdTe and CdS which modifies the spectral response of the solar cell [ 4]. The formation of a mixed crystal or a graded layer causes a reduction in the lattice mismatch at the CdS/CdTe junction [5] which is about 9% [ 6] and then a reduction in the number of interfacial states and recombination centers, thus enhancing the solar cell performance [7, 8]. A complete understanding of the properties of the intermixed layers CdSxTe1-x that usually constitutes the interfacial region in the CdS/CdTe solar cell is essential. According to our knowledge, a lot of research was devoted to the investigation of the diffusion of S into CdTe [3-5, 9]; but little on the direct investigation of the diffusion of Te into CdS [6]."

"Water electrolysis in 0.4 mol/L NaOH solution for hydrogen generation was carried out with ultrasound introduced through the anode. It was found that the cell voltage reduced by 150-300 mV in the current range of 20 mA to 40 mA with ultrasound frequency at 25.3 kHz. The cell operation became unstable when the cell current was larger than 75 mA with ultrasound. This reduction in cell voltage was due to removal of the gas bubbles on the electrode surface, which can be directly observed in the see-through cell of water electrolysis. Ultrasound with frequency of 33.3 Hz was also tried, but no better effect was obtained. The results suggest that ultrasound assisted water electrolysis can have potential in energy savings for hydrogen production.IntroductionIn electrolytic process, the electrode that the bubbles generated on its surface usually covered a thin gas film, which can be caused an additional voltage about 0.15-0.25V[l,2], especially in aluminum electrolysis. To solve the problem, loading the ultrasound removes the gas bubbles from the electrodes, this subject had been researched in recent years. From 1995 Jilai Xue et al[3,4,5]. applied the ultrasound in aluminum electrolysis in lab. The results from Sheng-De Li et al.[6] reveals that can decrease the cell voltage and have influences about the hydrogen and oxygen's output ratio. Although there are many paper about the applying of ultrasound such as in electrolysis[5,6], deposition[7,8], plating[9,10], oxidation of salts substance on the surface of electrodes[l 1] and so on, the effect of different frequencies ultrasound hadn't been investigated deeply.We focus on the anode voltage by different frequencies ultrasound and the bubble behaviors in this paper. The environment of this experiment is in alkaline solution. Through this exploration it can offer a basis for the applying of ultrasound in electrolysis."

"Demand for solar cells is increasing linearly throughout the world. Last year production totaled 3000 tons worldwide. The market size of solar silicon is expected to increase further because of international ""political"" demand to reduce carbonaceous emission from energy consumed. Most elemental silicon is produced by the carbon reduction of Silica in an electric arc furnace. Purity of silicon at this stage is 90-99%. Major impurities are Fe, Ti, Ca· and Al, and minor ones are P, B and carbon. The oxidizing metallurgical process is no longer effective to remove transitfon metals because those are less noble to silicon. Nonmetallic impurities such as phosphorus and boron must be reduced to 0.001ppm for semiconductor use. The most common process for high purity silicon is the Siemens C process, which is basically distillation of hydro-chlorinated silicon followed by CVD of SiHCl3. The cost of such silicon is expensive to allow its popular use in solar cells. Currently scrap silicon -of semiconductors is used for this; however, the supply-of that scrap is limited to just a portion of semiconductor production.In this paper world demand for silicon will be reviewed and some of the processes proposed summarized.IntroductionSilicon is element 14 in atomic number and has an atomic weight of 28.0855. Little elemental silicon is found in the earth, and it is mostly found as oxides or silicate. The Clark number of silicon is very large and the second in its number. If we were discussing the volatility of silicon element on the globe, we would never worry about it. However, it is very difficult to obtain pure elemental silicon because a high purity silicon compound is very rare. In most cases these are silica (silicon oxide SiO2). As shown in Table 1, there are many grades of silica ore classified mainly by their content of iron and alumina."

Typical electric appliances were dismantled into component pieces to study the recyclability of these discarded goods. Types and weight ratios of these component materials were investigated and characterized. The results showed that if they are dismantled properly, these goods could be classified into several groups of similar materials and/or structures, namely those consisting of single materials, metal-plastic combinations, metal-metal combinations and complex combinations of many different materials. By separating each combination into recyclable materials and isolating hazardous materials, it was found that the final waste for disposal could be reduced and the recycling efficiency could be improved markedly as compared to the conventional shredding method. The metal-metal combinations account for 60% by weight of the total metal contents in electric appliances, and therefore, it becomes important to segregate these metals. For the complex combinations, a process consisting of pyrolytic decomposition of plastic contaminants followed by smelting of the residue is proposed. It is anticipated that nearly zero-emission recycling of electric appliances will be achieved by applying this treatment process.
